In true Sandy Olsson fashion, we’re starting our makeover with a name change. The Cord remains an important part of our story but we want to be clear that we’re the Community Edition, made by community members for community members. Yeah, these fonts will tease and entice you, to read the stories that matter to our community. The report shows the city’s tax-supported functions, such as public works, fire services, planning and roads, have a combined $197,000 deficit up to Sept.

outh in Kitchener will soon be able to access sexual health services without having to travel to Waterloo or Cambridge — or having to make an awkward trip to their family doctor.

By the end of the year, Waterloo Region Public Health, with the assistance of other community partners in the Region, will open a youth sexual clinic at Kitchener’s Downtown Community Centre. It was an initiative approved by Kitchener City Council on Nov. 10.

The clinic will provide medical support and services to those between the ages of 1524 who are dealing with a sexually transmitted infection (STI), pregnancy or another health issue. The clinic will also offer referrals to other services throughout the Region.

“Everyday we’re in touch with young people with questions on where they could get access to STI screening and other clinic services, and there’s a real reluctance to go to the family doctor you have had since you’ve been born,” explained Lyndsey Butcher, executive director at Planned Parenthood, one of the community partners involved in the project.

“They [youth] really would like to have

something a bit more private and confidential. So, having the service downtown will really increase the access and then young people will be more comfortable getting screened for STIs.” A 2013 study conducted by the Region, found that gonorrhea rates spiked to 164 from 88 in the previous year. The Region reported 1,220 chlamydia infections during that year.

The highest rates of infection among those with gonorrhea were 20-24 year-olds.

According to Lesley Rintche, manager of the infectious diseases division at Waterloo Region Public Health, the clinic is slated to open at the community centre by the end of 2014 or early next year. The clinic will not require additional funding, she said, adding that they’re moving resources to accommodate the services at the new location.

“It would be the funding that we have already established with the Region, we’re just moving the location of our service,” she said.

But this clinic is just one area of focus identified in a youth sexual health strategy from 2009 by Waterloo Region Public Health and its community partners. For their research, WRPH surveyed about 1,200 students at both public and Catholic high schools in Kitchener. They also interviewed teachers, guidance counsellors and school staff.

“If we bring our youth clinic services to where youth are — and that’s something we heard with our engagement with youth during our research — they can easily access information and services where it seems

friendly,” Rintche said, adding that pregnancy rates among youth in Kitchener are some of the highest in the province.

The other two pillars of the strategy are focused on community education for youth and support for parents to address issues with their children about sexual behavior. The former is crucial, because misconceptions about sexual diseases and treatment exist among young people as well, Rintche said.

She added that screening for STIs isn’t as invasive as it has been in the past — all it requires nowadays is a urine sample. But a spike in STI rates hints at a lack of protection being used.

“People aren’t using protection, and they’re having multiple partners. We have to figure out that part,” she continued. “But we definitely know people aren’t using condoms.”

When the clinic opens Rintche expects it to be well used by youth in need of help, but it’ll be “a slow start.” Getting the word out about the services available in downtown Kitchener will be vital to its success.

“Youth need to build trust,” she said.

“I’m hoping that [the location is] a perfect fit. We’ll monitor and evaluate our services there, to see what the traffic is like, what the volume is like.”

The other community partners involved in the strategy are the two regional school boards, ROOF, the Sexual Assault Support Centre, Development Services at the City of Kitchener and ACCKWA.

An association that represents the local taxi industry plans to make sexual assault prevention training mandatory for drivers. The completion of a video training course, developed by the Sexual Assault Support Centre of Waterloo Region, will be required and paid for by the Waterloo Region Taxi Association. This comes after a spate of sexual assault charges against drivers in the Region.

yAWARD WINNING CLOCK CUTS BACK EMERGENCY ROOM VISITS St. Mary’s online wait clock, which tracks real-time ER wait times was developed with local tech company Oculys. When first instated, the clock reduced the number of ER visits by 12 per cent, and continues the downward trend two years later. In early November the clock was given a national award from the Information Technology Association of Canada for being one of the six most innovative projects of 2014. The award was the first for a hospital in Ontario.

yPROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT PROPOSES e-CIGARETTE LAWS The Ontario government proposed new legislation on Nov. 24 that, if passed, will ban the sale of e-cigarettes to anyone under 19 and prohibit their use in places where smoking tobacco is not allowed. If passed, the proposed legislation on e-cigarette use, and the sale of flavoured tobacco products, will go into effect in January 2016.

ast year there were approximately 3,500 different men, women and children who used the Region’s formal overnight shelters or the church-run Out of the Cold (OOTC) shelters. Some of these people had temporary homelessness situations, and some were more long term. The disheartening reality of that statistic is that it doesn’t account for the people who don’t actually use the shelters.

The Region of Waterloo is attempting to rectify that with a new comprehensive and more personal approach.

The STEP Home Program involves 12 separate but interrelated programs designed to end and prevent persistent homelessness.

Included under STEP Home is the 20,000 Homes Campaign, a nationwide attempt to permanently house Canada’s most vulnerable individuals. Inspired by the successful 100,000 Homes Campaign in the US, the program has volunteers deliberately going out onto the streets, talking to the homeless, assessing their needs, and tracking individual progress towards a personalized solution.

“It involves conducting a short health and housing survey with all people experiencing homelessness who are willing to participate, including those who are staying in shelters and on the street, along with others identified through STEP Home.” said Van Vilaysinh, Manager of Housing Stability for Waterloo Region.

cally canvas the community and complete the surveys.”

“If they get the volunteers they need I think they can reach almost everybody that they’re trying to reach, but not absolutely everybody,” said Elizabeth Clarke, CEO of the local YWCA, which is hosting a temporary shelter this winter.

“There are people who aren’t served by the formal shelters and they aren’t served by Out of the Cold’s either — they’re sleeping in tents or on benches.

“The Region is making an effort to reach out to those people and understand what it is that they need because what we’re delivering isn’t it.”

The Out of the Cold program has recently experienced a domino effect of shelter closures but it was very successful for 15 years as

an option for anyone experiencing homelessness. Fifteen years ago the Region had less funding, space was an issue and people were being turned away from the formal shelters, so the churches created OOTC to respond to that issue.

The problem is that it was never meant to be a long-term solution and it ended up becoming the main system many people were using.

“One of the Out of the Cold coordinators said to me that she realized she’d been seeing the same people for 10 years,” said Clarke.

“And she felt there must be something better — we’re not helping them move to something better.”

The good news is that over the years the Region was able to develop a better approach to helping people experiencing homeless-

ness, but still needed to reach out to those people who weren’t using the programs at all.

“We’re not going to be able to do a better job until we understand who they are and what it is that they want,” said Clarke.

Clarke believes that in addition to reaching the people who are experiencing homelessness outside of the system, the two main things this new program will achieve are raising community awareness of the situation, and helping the Region with its community services planning.

“We do have an advantage right now because of everything that is happening with the Out of the Cold. We have a community that’s really engaged in the issue in a way that I haven’t seen in 15 years.”

7D, 7E BUS ROUTES RECONSIDERED

rand River Transit recently announced a list of proposals for the 2015 Transit Improvement Plan. One of these proposals outlines the elimination of the 7E and D branches of the route 7 bus, which services the areas surrounding the two universities in Waterloo.

GRT gave several reasons for eliminating the 7D and E buses, noting the proposal mostly has to do with the upcoming ION light rail transit service.

“We know that down the line once ION rail service is running in a few years, the 7D and E are going to be pretty duplicative of the rail service,” said Reid Fulton, acting supervisor of transit development at the Region of Waterloo.

“So what we’re looking at essentially, in order to prepare for ION and to simplify the schedule, would be the elimination of the D/E branches.”

The other main reason that GRT is considering eliminating the buses is due to the fundamental setup of the route 7 bus system.

“We know that there is a certain complexity associated with the way the route 7 is set

up with the six different letter branches, and we’ve heard from the public in the past that it is confusing,” said Fulton.

The route 7E and D busses have their stops based at the University of Waterloo and are primarily used by university students.

Although the proposals would replace the

busses with additional 200 iXpress busses, there is still some concern from students who frequently use them.

“The 7D/E busses go all the way around UW campus, and if they take it away the students that take the night busses to get home won’t be able to,” said Zayan Imtiaz, a

first-year student at UW. “So I think it’d be a bad idea if they took it out.”

GRT is also looking into how they will ensure continued service for riders of the 7D and E if those buses were to be cancelled.

The main suggestion has been to facilitate additional buses of other routes and integrate buses with the ION rail stops.

“We would be looking at providing additional trips on other routes, like route 7, that would remain on King Street and routes on University and Columbia to mitigate the change,” said Fulton.

“We’ll also be looking at adding additional stations for the 200 iXpress at the location of ION stops. That would help mitigate the loss of the D/E by opening up additional options for people by adding those stops.”

One key factor in whether GRT will adopt this proposal is public perception and feedback. They have been hosting public consultation sessions to get feedback from riders in Waterloo, with the last session being hosted on Nov. 26 at Emmanuel Village. Riders can also give their feedback on upcoming proposals using GRT’s customer service phone line.

“We’re trying to gather feedback from riders and particularly students in the Waterloo areas on these proposals before any decisions are made,” said Fulton.

very Saturday at the far back corner of the Kitchener Market, behind a modest booth, stands Katharina Ortner.

The owner of Anna Tolazzi, an artisanal chocolate studio that specializes in handmade indulgences, Ortner has been serving customers her unique creations for almost seven years. Fervently committed to perfecting her skill as a chocolatier, Ortner has found the market to be an ideal environment to share and sell her art without compromise.

“The market gives me the opportunity to do exactly what I want to do, when I want to do it, and how I want to do it.”

Preparing for each Saturday is hard work.

“It’s not an easy lifestyle,” Ortner admits, comparing market day to a “mini exhibition” where she “really tries to put [her] best foot forward every time.”

During the week, Ortner diligently toils away, concocting small pieces of edible jewelry. Some are imbued with Fabergé-esque detail and decadent fillings, while others reveal a more minimalist approach that speaks to the purity of Ortner’s creative process, as well as her conscious choice of ingredients.

“Organic fair trade. That’s the route I wanted to go. It’s really important to me that I don’t base my business on the backs of someone else’s suffering,” shares Ortner.

“Suffering has no place in my chocolates – no grief, no pain, no free labour.”

It’s easy to admire Ortner’s unapologetic approach to her craft. Locally sourcing ingredients, oftentimes from other market vendors, and making everything from scratch...

she places very strict principles upon which Anna Tolazzi operates.

“I have a certain standard for my work and it has to hit that standard every day,” she says. “iIf it doesn’t, it’s just not going to make it to the market.”

As complex as the alchemy behind making chocolate is, Ortner’s approach takes a refreshingly simple stride. “I have this theory,” she says, “if you use the best ingredients possible, find out as much as you can about the materials, and do it with the best ability, it has to turn out better.”

As much work as the preparation is, Ortner loves her time at the market. She attributes this to the resolve of the other vendors and the appreciation she gets from her customers.

“You have to get up at a godforsaken time in the morning,” says Ortner, who will sometimes wake up at 3:30 a.m. to be ready for the market’s 7 a.m. opening.

Despite this, she says what makes it easy is seeing the other vendors who do the exact same thing. “I really appreciate the vendors there. For me to show up in the morning, I am totally groggy and I would love to sleep in one day on a Saturday and not go to bed at a ridiculous hour on Friday, but when I am there, and everyone is there, it’s all gone, it’s forgotten.”

When the market doors open and customers begin to shuffle through, Ortner receives perhaps the biggest payout. “There is something very rewarding about dealing with people who really appreciate what you’re doing. I get that feeling all the time from people I serve. It’s rewarding. I love every single one of my customers. It if wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t do this.”

ven the casual music lovers in KW hold the title of ‘quasi-regular’ at the usual spots in town, are frequent travelers to Toronto, and are collectors of ticket stubs from local festivals. The KW music community is alive and kicking, that’s for sure — hidden somewhere outside of the traditional offerings, musicians are leaving it all on the floor for intimate crowds.

The Community Edition set out to tell you where to find these hyper-local and pseudo-secret shows.

Princess Cafe and Raintree Cafe The Princess Cafe and Raintree Cafe are two Waterloo restaurants known for their sandwiches and ramen, respectively. But did you know you can also catch a bit of live music at these eateries? Look out for the next show at Princess Café, where you can catch some local folk and rock acts. Head to Raintree Café, if you are looking for something heavier, this spot is said to feature punk, hardcore and noise groups.

Both restaurants are licensed and presumably the shows would be, too. Princess Café is located on King Street in Uptown. Raintree is located in a plaza just south of the intersection of King Street & University Avenue.

The Outpost After downtown Kitchener venue staples Strange Utopia and The Loft closed their doors, the core was left without somewhere that would reliably host smaller shows or take in out-of-town acts that might not get

musicians are leaving it all on the floor for intimate crowds booked in KW otherwise. The Outpost is carrying the torch. It’s a small gallery off the main drag in downtown Kitchener, which doubles as a venue for music.

The Outpost appears fairly indiscriminate about the music it supports. You would have equal opportunity of catching a rock, punk, folk or dance performance there. Shows are all ages, but there is a bar where PBR or vodka and cokes can be purchased. Comfortable seating is available for lounging, but it is limited. Bottlenecks are common when navigating room to room — the doorways seem to be conversation hotspots.

The Outpost is centrally located on Scott St. in downtown Kitchener.

The Kitchener-Waterloo Chamber Music Society Chamber music is classical music played in small groups for small groups. Known to attract a generally mature crowd, it is nonetheless welcoming to all.

Those who would overlook classical music will miss out on this gem. The breadth of sounds in this genre is surprising and KWCMS pulls in the talent to impress. The headquarters and main concert space for the KWCMS is a house on Young Street, which overlooks the gardens in Waterloo Park.

Legend goes that The Branches is one of the oldest houses in Waterloo, so old in fact that it has grown fantastic roots down into the earth. Inside, The Branches is a figurative community nest, and home to a concert series known as The View From Here. According to the owners, TVFH began as a gathering between friends, but has grown outward and been embraced by the community at large.

The success of TVFH grows from its values: good music, good food, good conversation and good friends.

TVFH is no longer hosted on a monthly basis, but the philosophy towards music and community has been transplanted into living rooms behind drawn curtains across the Region. Ask the hosts and they will likely know of The Branches.

These home shows are mostly folk or singer/songwriter type performances. The format doesn’t lend itself to heavy or loud tunes. Grab a bit of wine and a seat on a couch or floor pillow. For best results, arrive ready to get engaged and sing along.

Schtinkies Schtinkies is rumoured to be somewhere on John St. in Waterloo. Local punk band Life in Vacuum played a show there recently - the fliers are still posted around Uptown. It might be loosely associated with, or filling the void of, the now defunct Trepid House. The only thing that doesn’t rest in through-the-grapevine information is that this venue typically hosts heavier music and bigger crowds than The Branches format of house shows.

BE CAREFUL UNDER THE MISTLETOE

T

is the season. Parties, presents and good cheer – and to make the holidays extra special, a little smooching under the mistletoe. Special indeed, but this is exactly how you may get a cold sore (read: oral herpes). Herpes is highly contagious and can be contracted by kissing.

It is also a virus, something you cannot get rid of.

The only good news? You can see it! A herpes outbreak looks like a blister, often red and raised, on or around the nose and mouth. Therefore if you see someone with a herpes outbreak do not kiss them, do not share chap stick, lipstick, a drink, a straw, a cigarette, a joint, a bong or a popsicle with them. And heaven forbid: do not let them kiss, lick or suck any other special parts of your body.

As well as spreading mouth to mouth, herpes can spread from mouth to genitals, genitals to mouth and genitals to genitals.

You can also get herpes in your eyes. Do not touch a herpes sore, even your own, and then rub your eyes. Hand washing is extremely important here. In rare cases, herpes can also spread from mother to child during birth.

As on the mouth, you can see herpes on the genitals. So take a good look before diving in. Anything out of the ordinary on the genitals should be checked out by a health care provider and testing should be conducted for all sexually transmitted infections (STIs). ‘Out of the ordinary’ could include lumps, bumps, redness, itching, unusual discharge and a bad or strong odour.

If any of these are ordinary for you, I highly recommend you see a health care provider.

HERPES CAN SPREAD BETWEEN MOUTHS, GENITALS AND EYES Do not engage in sexual activity if you have any of these symptoms, or suspect you have an STI. Masturbation is always a nice option in these circumstances.

Although herpes is highly contagious when there is an outbreak, it is much less likely to be contracted when there is not an outbreak. So do not worry about kissing someone who has no visible symptoms, kiss away. But be careful of people with thick beards and moustaches, herpes has been known to hide in facial hair. Many people with herpes rarely have an outbreak, while others have outbreaks on a regular basis. There are many over the counter remedies that can be purchased at pharmacies for oral herpes, as well as prescription medications for both oral and genital herpes. Some methods treat outbreaks and shorten their duration and symptoms, others can be taken every day to suppress the virus and act as outbreak prevention.

So, enjoy the season, keep your eyes open, and always use a condom.

ccording to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the first day of winter is Sunday, Dec. 21, and the first day of spring is Friday, Mar. 20. That gives us 90 days of cold winter weather. However, if you’ve ever experienced a Canadian winter before, or if you’ve been outside lately, you’ll know that winter weather in Canada actually runs from about midNovember to mid-April.

I just returned from a family vacation in California. Toes in the ocean, the sun on my face, and I am energized and ready to tackle the upcoming winter months. Like many, I’m not a fan of winter; it’s cold, it’s wet, it’s dark and it puts me in a funky mood. But rather than allowing these ‘blue’ feelings to take over and pull me down, I use mindfulness and the art of gratitude to fill me up.

Battling the Blues I’m not a doctor, but I am well versed in the long list of self-help tips for beating the blues: exercise, eat healthy, take up a winter hobby, visit with friends, light therapy.

Easier said than done, right? Well, maybe not. With using mindfulness as our foundation, twist this list into something a bit more practical and obtainable. To be honest, if you’re feeling down and the list is feeling big, you won’t do any of it, not one thing.

Mindful walking (aka exercise and light therapy) Go for a walk outside. Make it an experience. It can be as short or as long as you’d like. Notice the cool, or perhaps frigid, breeze on your cheeks. Listen to the wind. Hear the crunching of the snow under your feet. Feel the sun on your face. Feel alive.

Mindful eating (aka eat healthy and visit with friends) Create a warm and savoury meal to enjoy.

Notice the textures. Feel the warmth. Enjoy the flavours. Experience it. And as you enjoy your meal, focus only on the meal. Put all distractions and devices away. Be in the moment.

My favourite is to slowly sip a warm cup of peppermint hot chocolate, either at home or at one of my favourite local coffee shops. It’s amazing the joy that a little mug of warmth can bring. Gather some friends and make it a group experience.

Mindful breathing (aka your new hobby) One of the easiest ways to focus on the ‘now’ is to practice mindful breathing. Bring your attention to the rise and fall of your breath, and focus on the inhale and exhale.

When your mind wanders, gently bring it back to the breath. Inhale, exhale. You can practice this in a seated position for a concentrated amount of time, or you can practice anytime, anyplace; walking, cooking, cleaning, etc. As you focus on your breath your thoughts settle down and your mind becomes calm and clear. The end result is a feeling of contentment and happiness.

We have roughly 120 days of cold weather ahead, use this time to find beauty in the mundane and gratitude in the everyday.

A celebration of photography as an art form, Flash will be taking place at the Tannery Event Centre in Kitchener on Jan. 23, 2015. The event will feature photography by amateurs, some local legends, featured area photographs and Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Barbara Davidson of the Los Angeles Times. It’s like Christmas.

You know, the same, but different every year,” said Stuart McLean, host of radio show The Vinyl Café. “Same format of stories and music, but the presents are different.”

McLean is currently on the road with the annual Vinyl Café Christmas tour, which began Nov. 25 in Vernon, B.C., and is landing in Kitchener’s Centre in the Square on Dec. 16 and 17.

The two-decade-old radio series, and now podcast, is a familiar sound for many Canadians — its fables and write-in tales are often heard filling a car during long, rural drives, or floating through a home on Sunday afternoons.

While the stories may look back, the accompanying tunes provide nuances of young Canada.

“We made it a goal a decade ago to shine light on young, upcoming musicians who might not get light shone upon them in many other places,” said McLean.

This year’s show features Chic Gamine, a troupe out of Winnipeg boasting two Juno nominations for Roots Album of the Year.

Attendees can expect everything from old favourites to fresh music for their listening ears, but The Vinyl Café is crafting more than an entertaining evening.

“I’ve learned that the line between [fact and fiction] is much greyer than one might imagine,” said McLean, reflecting on his transition from journalist to touring taleteller.

“When writing fact you go out and research, but the true story I might tell is different than the one you might tell,” he said.

“There is a lot of author in creating fact.”

Since his reporting days on the CBC’s Morningside with Peter Gzowski, the journalist with an unmistakable cadence in his voice migrated to telling fictional stories about his keystone characters Dave, Morley and their family. The roadshow recordings also host essays and write-in short stories from across Canada, many of which are encompassed in the podcasts and The Vinyl Café book series, writing a chapter into Canadian culture.

magnificent things, come together under very difficult circumstances,” said McLean. “We took the French, English and First Nations, plopped them down in very challenging climate, in difficult geography, and said ‘build something.’”

This sentiment, McLean explained, is motivating in his story sharing.

“These truths permeate writers’ stories, be they fiction or non-fiction. These are things that they see as important. They are my truths, too. They permeate my work, probably in a subtle way.”

The notorious rises and falls of McLean’s voice carrying from a radio speaker is printed

in the textbook of Canadian storytelling.

While McLean says he doesn’t concern himself with why people identify with his characters — as to not let them be shaped by it ―he notes a few truths that seem to unite the crowd.

“I understand some truths. People like to gather to hear stories. We like to laugh and feel things together, and people come together for this.”

alking into the Kitchener-Waterloo Little Theatre – or KWLT as it’s more affectionately called – in Uptown Waterloo is a little bit like walking into the living room at Grandma’s house. With antique furniture and the scents of history and story telling in the air, it feels more like coming home then going to see a production. This month, I stopped in for a behind the scenes look at the theatre, as they did a tech run for this year’s holiday production, Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus.

The volunteer run theatre is small, as you would imagine with such a name as ‘little theatre’ but, what I found after spending the afternoon with Yes Virginia and her cast and crew, was my Nana was right when she said “the best things come in small packages.”

“Part of that home made, hand crafted feel comes from the theatre being a non-profit, 100 per cent volunteer run, and the rich history as well,” explained Elizabeth McFaul, producer for Yes Virginia.

“We have actors who are in their first production and we have others who have been working with the theatre for 30+ years, and that’s where a lot of that community feeling comes from.”

A cast of 14 members may not seem like many, especially when they are playing more than 50 roles during Yes Virginia, but in a tiny green room, these actors who range in age from 11-65, have learned the intricate dance of jumping over one another during costume and scene changes.

The green room at KWLT would liken to the storage room at Grandma’s, if compared to the living room like feeling of the theatre’s main foyer.

Costumes, jackets, and props hang from the ceiling. Storage lockers, and more antique furniture litter the floor. It’s in this back room where friendships seem to shine their true light and the camaraderie between cast members takes centre stage.

“This is a big cast for us and it can get a bit rowdy back here sometimes but, if you were to go and just sit in there during a production, you’ll make a handful of new best friends – everyone is very welcoming,” said McFaul.

Yes Virginia is a production based off an editorial appearing in the Sept. 21, 1897 edition of the New York Sun. The feeling of frustration evoked by eight-year-old Virginia O’Hanlon in her letter to the editor, and the answer she received, was developed into a radio play and further adapted for theatre. As a result, the story of Virginia and her family has become a popular part of holiday folklore.

Director Adrienne Steer chose Yes Virginia for their holiday show because of the story behind the story.

“I fell in love with the characters and the connectedness and reality of these characters. It’s set in 1897, but these are the same questions we’re dealing with today – how do you know what to believe in, how can you prove anything?”

The appeal to Yes Virginia lies in the fact that it is not a traditional holiday story. The depth and reality of Virginia and her family is something that all families can relate to.

“There is a raw emotion to Yes Virginia. You have children who are trying to figure out what to believe in and you have adults who are trying to stay afloat. Similarly to now, unemployment is an issue and you have to lean on family and each other,” explained Steer.

The theatrical part of the show itself isn’t a traditional undertaking either. The set is minimal, the actors stay on stage, and well, it’s not good to give too much more away.

To bring to family dinner: In my opinion, Beau’s Lug Tread is a great choice to bring to a family dinner to share.

It has more flavour than your Uncle’s usual American Adjunct Lager (Canadian, Blue, etc), but it’s not so weird that he’ll spit it out when he tries it. Think of it as a gateway craft beer.

To stock when you’re having friends over: It can be fun to add a “beer tasting” element to a friend gathering. Pick up a few seasonal releases from some craft breweries, or just grab a Best of Beau’s sampler pack. Split the bottles between those interested, and you’ll

To gift to your family member who is a beer enthusiast: Unless you know their specific tastes, buying a beer enthusiast actual beer can be a tricky prospect. If you find yourself in the United States, or in a distant town with a small brewery that has limited distribution, you might be able to excite them with something they have never had before. Closer to home, I’d suggest checking out the merchandise page on torontobrewing.com. They distribute for many small breweries, and you just might see a shirt, or some glassware, from that brewery that they never shut up about. LCBO gift cards don’t hurt either.

Stitch ‘n’ kitsch turns 10

A

s Stitch ’n’ Kitsch craft show approaches its tenth year, this crafty collective is stronger than ever.

Stitch ’n’ Kitsch is a group of independent, local indie artisans who run two craft shows each year. It started as a meeting ground for a small group of crafters and a chance to relax and work on their crafts. When the group decided to showcase their work by running a small event out of the community centre of a local co-op, they were surprised at the level of support. The events grew into their current location, the First United Church in uptown Waterloo.

The Stitch ‘n’ Kitsch Holiday show features a variety of artisans, including jewellery, pottery, body and bath products, and knits.

Jessica Burman, member of the collective, and owner of Cocoon Apothecary, explains that the show has grown from around a dozen vendors in 2005, to over thirty vendors.

“I always like seeing so many people in one space, especially people who are very supportive of artisans, local talent, and local handmade. It’s a really good crowd,” explained Burman.

The holiday theme of the winter show helps everyone get into the spirit, and is a great place to discover new gift ideas that support local economy.

What sets Stitch ’n’ Kitsch apart is their commitment to local, handcrafted goods.

Where many craft shows have expanded to include sellers with non-local products, Stitch ’n’ Kitsch focuses on artisans and individuals who create their own items.

“We look for quality, handmade, and it has to have an edge to it. It has to be funky, edgy, something different,” said Burman.

“It’s fascinating to see what people bring to their table every year.”

A number of vendors have been creating toys made from upcycled materials and natural fibres. These toys are made using nontoxic materials, and just in time for the holiday season.

The show’s success comes partly from the larger, indie craft movement and the growth of the crafting marketplace Etsy.

“We’ve been growing along with Etsy and a

lot of our sellers are on Etsy,” said Burman.

With Etsy, these crafters are able to promote their creations to a wider audience, but they enjoy the audience that the Stitch ‘n’ Kitsch shows provide. The vendors develop a loyal following, but that following grows larger each year as more of Waterloo Region discovers it.

When asked what Stitch ’n’ Kitsch has in store for the future, Burman laughs. “Every time the conversation goes into something different, we always pull it back. We’re just interested in providing this venue for local artists.”

Bomb the Music Industry – Vacation Having called it quits back in January of 2014, Bomb the Music Industry were a tour de force in punk rock for a little less than 10 years. Their final release, Vacation, proves that their efforts towards creating an album that spans as many genres as it does chord changes has finally truly paid off.

While many of Bomb’s albums are difficult to comprehend on first listen, due to the frenetic energy and regular change-ups frequently occurring throughout, this is by far their most polished album. Standout tracks include “Everybody That You Love,” which they shot a video for, and the ballad “The Shit That You Hate.”

This album, unlike most of Bomb’s other efforts, features much more upbeat and hopeful lyrical themes. The final lyrics of the album state, “Take my faults and say ‘okay then,’ And call up everyone I know, before I’m spending time alone,” which truly defines this album in its entirety of being the soundtrack of friendship.

Foo Fighters – Sonic Highways While purists have been snubbing their nose at the Foo Fighter’s last few efforts, many others feel that they’re truly coming into their own as a band. The latest album Sonic Highways is no exception.

While only eight tracks long, Sonic Highways clocks in at an impressive 42 minutes. Each of the eight tracks were recorded in different studios across the United States and considering he directed last year’s critically acclaimed documentary Sound City, it’s safe to say Dave Grohl knows a thing or two about recording studios.

Music history buffs will appreciate that this album is accompanied with an HBO television series that features a spotlight on each of the eight cities that this album was recorded in – Chicago, Washington, Nashville, Austin, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Seattle and New York.

While maintaining the Foo Fighters’s staple arena rock sound, each of the tracks have a feel that is native to the music that is from the area they were recorded in. This album is a great addition to the collections of the die-hard rock-and-roll dads that we all know and love.

While most of the world eagerly awaits the newest Game of Thrones book, there’s another fantasy series gaining popularity that’s managed to sneak by mostly under the radar thus far. The Name of the Wind is the first book in a planned trilogy that introduces the reader to Kvothe, a gifted young man on a quest for revenge against the creatures that murdered his parents.

It’s a story that moves at breakneck speed and builds a unique, captivating world organically, without succumbing to the density Game of Thrones sometimes falls victim too. The second book in the series The Wise Mans Fear is also available.

Sean Michaels — Us Conductors The Giller Prize is awarded annually to the finest example of Canadian fiction, so it’s a safe bet that the avid reader on your list will be thrilled to receive this year’s winner Us Conductors.

The novel follows Lev Termen, the Russian-born inventor of the Theremin, from his life as a scientist in Leningrad, to a teacher in New York, and ultimately as a spy in Moscow.

Told through a series of flashbacks, Us Conductors is a page-turning story of heartbreak and beauty that’s perfect to lose yourself in on a frigid day.

Alvvays – Alvvays Toronto’s own Alvvays (pronounced Always) put out their rookie effort in a self-titled album earlier this year. When they played the Starlight back in October, they blew the audience away with their high-energy live show.

The album opens with the second single released, “Adult Diversion.” It immediately gives the listener a great sample of the shiny, cutesy low-fi sound that Alvvays offers. There is a heavy Blondie feel to this album and the lead singer is the daughter of John Morris Rankin, of The Rankin Family, so there is a lot of old school influence on this record.

The album, which clocks in at just over half an hour on only nine tracks, is sure to have you dancing from the second it kicks in, to the final eerie track entitled “Red Planet.” The second track, “Archie, Marry Me” is certainly the stand out track from the album. It’s got a chorus melody that you’ll be singing for weeks, and will make you think only of your sweetheart every time you hear it.

tep into the Proof Kitchen + Lounge and you realize instantly that this is not your ordinary hotel restaurant. Inside the new Delta Waterloo (in the barrel yards of uptown Waterloo), Proof salutes Waterloo’s colourful past and exciting future in every facet of its business.

The name ‘Proof,’ for example, embodies Waterloo’s identity in its multiple meanings. A proof is a deductive argument for a mathematical statement, and the measure of intensity in alcoholic beverages, a clever nod to two of our most famous industries.

Adorning the walls are mathematical equations by local physicists on old-school chalk boards. Part of an ongoing series, these equations are constantly changing and their authors are showcased on Proof’s website.

An ice bar was commissioned for their recent grand opening, with two sculpted Seagrams’ whiskey barrels serving as pillars.

“We were inspired by the spirit of Waterloo,” said Laura Umbrio, general manager of Proof. “We wanted to celebrate the region’s geographic location and its proximity to rich

farmland throughout our menu.”

Umbrio offers up as an example the Berkshire Pork chop ,“the pork chop that will change your life,” boasts Umbrio.

The locally grown Berkshire pork thrilled executive chef Tim Dunnill, who was cautious about tampering too much with its flavour. Proof cold smokes the pork to gently infuse without overwhelming it. The result is Proof’s signature dish. Proof’s fish and chips are made with fresh pickerel, battered in Waterloo Dark Ale. Paradise Farms supplies the meat for their ‘Proof Burger,’ which is all naturally raised and grass-fed within a twenty-mile radius of the restaurant. The burgers include 6oz of ground chuck, clod, and brisket served on a pretzel bun.

The drink menu features 10 locally crafted beers, including a Barrel Proof Ale, a proprietary brew created by Grand River Brewery and offered exclusively at Proof.

A newcomer to uptown Waterloo’s upscale dining scene, Proof demonstrates right out of the gates that they are here for the long haul.

With its ingenious menu offerings and decor, Proof Kitchen + Lounge celebrates the best that Waterloo Region has to offer.
