Designing a gym that is just the type he would enjoy visiting is what Darryl Burden, owner of Snap Fitness in Pennsburg, had in mind when he opened the largest branch of Snap in the tri-state area in December of 2016. The world’s largest wellness franchise organization, Snap Fitness, is set apart from other gyms by offering a 24-hour a day, seven day a week facility. This deceptively large gym, located at 476 Pottstown Avenue, offers a wide variety of classes with both male and female instructors. “About four out of every five people who sign up don’t realize we have classes,” says Burden. Jamal Lewis, training manager/general manager, teaches multiple heart-pounding classes including TRX, Pounding Rounds; Sizes Down, and Simulated Strike Camp. “TRX is the suspension training system made by the Navy SEALS. We have nine machines. It puts you at a different angle for a curl or a row for your chest, arms, back…it is an ab activated system,” says Lewis. In Simulated Strike Camp, described as similar to Boot Camp, you will be punching, kicking, twisting, and squatting. “The music is loud and fast and I motivate people to do things they didn’t think they could do,” says Lewis. “If it scares you, you should probably do it.” When you’re at Pounding Rounds; Sizes down, you’ll get a fun workout no matter your age. You’ll be feeling your whole body tone into shape by using punches and kicks. Get ready to punch your daily stress away!
Of all the classes Lewis teaches, “I would have to say Simulated Strike Camp is my favorite,” says Lewis. “I named it myself and I can continue to work it the way I want. It’s just really cool.” Jacque Porterfield is an experienced registered yoga teacher who also owns Lehigh Valley Yoga in Allentown. Porterfield teaches several classes at Snap from power yoga to beginner yoga. “I like teaching here because it’s a perfect fit,” says Porterfield. “People who are interested in joining a gym like this are a regular person trying to get fit. This is a nonthreatening way to take yoga.” Yoga classes at Snap are accessible for all fitness levels. “Everything I teach can be scaled down for beginners. I really want people to know they’re not getting in over their heads,” says Porterfield. Zumba, Total Body Toning, and Spinning are just a few more of the classes offered at Snap. Classes are available throughout the week, both day and night. Snap has plans to add more morning and weekend classes to facilitate their growing group of members. Snap also offers a convenient“Fitness On Demand” system. With Fitness On Demand, when you’re at Snap you can choose from a number of heart-pumping exercise videos like kickboxing, Latin dance, cycling, and more. The system starts with a motorized screen, which lowers before the on-screen instructor starts the class. She is a pretty laid back girl that gets along well with the shih tzu in her foster home and has also done well with other dogs she has met so far. Providing practical advice for common problems in our furry family members. I cannot stress enough the importance of structured exercise for our pets. I know a fenced yard seems like a convenient and “logical” response to our pets’ needs but the reality is it only meets our needs. “Structured exercise” refers to activities guided or supervised by a person. Pets tend to act on instinct or habit when we are not guiding their exercise. Most dogs do not get adequate exercise if they are “put out” in a fenced area; in fact, they tend to treat that space as an extension of their inside space where they are more likely to lay around unless provided external stimulation. Pets need about 60 minutes of exercise per day for physical activity as well as mental stimulation. Walking your dog is one of the most convenient and beneficial activities you could participate in. It fits into any schedule and you can do it virtually anywhere with very little equipment. Some training is necessary but it takes practice for your dog to learn your expectations and she’s only going to learn them by doing it. Obedience classes (for adults or puppies) may be necessary to get you and your dog started on basic leash etiquette but a small investment now will reap great rewards later. Additional benefits of exercise for our pets: sleep more soundly at night, rest more calmly at home, decreased anxiety in some dogs, improved body condition with weight loss, better bone and joint health, improved cardio-respiratory fitness, undeniable human-animal bond… Tips for getting started: •Talk to your vet before starting to ensure your pet is healthy enough. •Start slowly; no “weekend warriors”. •Tie an “In Training” bandana around your dog’s neck so people know. •Never use a retractable leash – they disrupt the direct line of communication between you and your dog that a non-flexible leash provides. •Avoid harnesses that hook the leash on your dog’s back; these allow dogs to pull with their full body weight and decrease your ability to control them. •My favorite harness is EASY WALKER harness; it uses a martingale and the leash hooks at their chest •The EASY WALKER may change you and your dog’s walking life. •Other options include the Gentle Leader and standard collars. •Don’t expect perfection on the first day, there is a learning curve for you both. •Seek out age or skill appropriate obedience classes or your veterinarian’s behavior advice if you encounter a bump in the road.

Things You Can Do To Make Halloween Safer For Your Pet
Don't feed your pets candy, especially if it contains chocolate or xylitol (a common sugar substitute found in sugar-free candies & gum).
Make sure your pet is properly identified (microchip, collar and ID tag) in case s/he escapes through the open door while you're distracted with trick-or-treaters.
Keep lit candles and jack-o-lanterns out of reach of pets.
If you plan to put a costume on your pet, make sure it fits properly and is comfortable, doesn't have any pieces that can easily be chewed off, and doesn't interfere with your pet's sight, hearing, breathing, opening its mouth, or moving. Take time to get your pet accustomed to the costume before Halloween, and never leave your pet unsupervised while he/she is wearing a costume.
Keep glow sticks and glow jewelry away from your pets. Although the liquid in these products isn't likely toxic, it tastes really bad and makes pets salivate excessively and act strangely.
If your pet is wary of strangers, put him/her in another room during trick-or-treating hours or provide him/her with a safe hiding place.

Another way KIVS differs from other offices is in the design of their rooms. Cat and dog examining rooms do not have the typical cold, metal tables. Cats are kept in their carriers to ease their stress while Dr. Walter examines them. She makes dogs more comfortable by performing their exams on the floor. Additionally, soothing pheromones also are infused into the rooms to reduce pets’ anxiety.
As a well-educated practitioner, Dr. Walter keeps abreast of different treatments and how they may benefit patients of all sizes. “We do all sorts of alternative therapies. I’m a scientist and I need science to back me with what I’m doing.”

Biking the Perkiomen Trail By: Zach Brown, Valley Forge Tourism & Convention Board
Montgomery County, Pa., is home to nearly 100 miles of trails, and we are on a mission to explore all of them. This week, I grabbed my bike for an early morning bike ride on the Perkiomen Trail. The 20-mile Perkiomen Trail makes up more than one-fifth of Montco’s nearly 100 miles of trails, carving a path northto-south from Green Lane to Oaks. I wanted just a little more for my my ride so I set my destination a few miles farther south – the Visitor Center at Valley Forge National Historical Park.
The northernmost sections of the trail are developed, but there are a pair of brief stretches where riders must either share the road or use a widened shoulder before the trail truly comes into its own.
One of the hallmarks of the trail in this early section is the road crossings. The trail meanders through the villages of Salford and Spring Mount before the real fun begins. Just south of Spring Mount, about five miles into my ride, was the biggest challenge I would face on the day: climbing Spring Mountain.
The warning sign comes one-quarter mile before the climb. A 12% grade takes riders up a 200-foot ascent to the top of Spring Mountain before shooting down the other side.

Collegeville is home to Ursinus College and is the largest town serviced by the trail. The gravel path gives way to pavement at the intersection of Main Street and Third Avenue.

Here, riders can choose to continue on the Schuylkill River Trail or take a slight detour around the Audubon Loop that leads to the John James Audubon Center at Mill Grove – the first American home of the famed naturalist and artist. The Audubon Center includes seven miles of trails – mostly walking and hiking – as well rotating art exhibits in Audubon’s home-turned-museum. Guided canoe trips along the Perkiomen Creek are also offered on select days throughout the summer.

Anyone who has ever competed in the Valley Forge Revolutionary 5-Mile Run knows this hill well.
It’s a quarter-mile climb to the top – one last push before patting yourself on the back for a job well-done and another reminder that this trail is not for beginners.
From here, all of Valley Forge Park is within your grasp. The five-mile JPM Trail carries riders on the ups and downs of the hilly terrain past some of the park’s most-visited spots – the recreated Muhlenberg Brigade Huts, the newly reconstructed Fort John Moore, the United States National Memorial Arch and the line of cannon at Artillery Park. For my trip, the Visitor Center was the end of the line – the final landmark on a journey that began 22 miles away. But more adventures remain to be written along the Perkiomen Trail. Called the “herb of the sun,” the marigold represents passion and creativity. It’s this inspiration that Lisa Palmer and her mother, Donna Trinsey, bring to your home with their business, Marigold Staging & Design. Whether you’re in need of staging your house to sell or to breathe new life into a room, Marigold has a stress-free way to make your home a showstopper. Marigold began several years ago when Palmer did some home staging and interior design work for family and friends who were thrilled with her expertise. “I had my son about four years ago and my friend said ‘you should really just do this. This is your passion.’ I thought, can I? I didn’t know whether I could or not. It’s a little scary.” After attending a work course in Nashville to learn how to start her business, Palmer was introduced to other women around the country who were also learning how to take hold of their dream to start their own unique businesses. After developing an online portfolio with her friend, photographer Kelly Pullman (www.kellypullmanphotography.com), the business began to take shape. Choosing a name would be the final step in making this burgeoning business take flight. The word “marigold” stood out for a variety of reasons. “What I really like is that it can stand the most intense winters. They almost stand by themselves,” says Palmer. “You’re unique, you’re an individual and you don’t let any negative energy around you, only let positive energy around you. I called my mom and she said, ‘That’s it!’”
This unique, positive energy is what Marigold brings to your home as they take away your worries with their guidance when you request one of their services, which include consultations, home staging, and redesign. When staging a house they offer several options including “Staging with the homeowners’ own furniture, so it all has to do with working with their budget. They can also use furniture that’s rented. I get the fun part and pick what goes where and then the rental company comes and picks it up,” says Palmer. Marigold works with homeowners, realtors and house flippers. “House flippers would really benefit from home staging because you can rent furniture, so we would be able to take the furniture and help sell the home,” advises Palmer. With interior design “Most of the time it’s one room the homeowner wants to focus on. We come in and we can do a couple of things: we can do a walk and talk consultation, which is just what it sounds like; we walk through and give you ideas. The consultation can also do a design board and I can do that in person or virtually. I can video chat through Skype or I can do everything electronic, take measurements of their entire place, and create a board for it,” says Palmer. Trinsey and Palmer help each other make decisions about what works and what doesn’t inside a space and let the creativity flow from there. “I bring more of the modern twist, she brings a little bit more of the country,” says Palmer. “Our designs connect. I learned everything from her and my dad in design and art.”

When asked for Marigold’s top tips on jazzing up an old space Palmer replied, “If my mom was here she’d be saying lamps or plants. I love mirrors and clocks. To me mirrors in a small space can expand a space.” What are Marigold’s plans for the future? “What we plan on doing is building an inventory. I like to go to local places, antique stores, estate sales, and pick up all of these little fun treasures. I fix them up and eventually we’ll have a brick and mortar called Marigold where you can come in and buy home interior things. Autumn is in the air. The crisp morning and nights are approaching faster now. It’s back to school.It’s pumpkin spice.It’s fall décor time! Which means it’s time to switch out those pastel tulips for sunflowers and apple spice. This time, we’re celebrating this beautiful season by welcoming the striking, colorful leaves into our home. You can bring in actual branches to display in clear glass vases, or purchase a few stems either from a craft or dollar store. This decoration can easily blend with your Halloween décor, so you won’t need to spend a fortune to gain this look.
One of my favorite places to find themed décor on a dime is at the Dollar Spot located within Target. If you dig around you will find wooden cutouts of all different things. I just found cutouts of bats and cats, and at $3 each, I bought both. It makes an excellent art project for either yourself or your kiddos. It also provides a customized decoration that you will cherish forever.

October is here already with its colorful leaves, chilly evenings, and spooky stories getting residents of the Upper Perkiomen Valley ready for Halloween. One of the “perks” of living in Upper Perk is the oneof-a-kind annual Halloween Parade that marches four miles down Main Street (Route 29) through the boroughs of Red Hill, Pennsburg, and East Greenville. Bob McCluskie, from the Love Upper Perk Halloween Committee, has been working hard with his volunteers to make this parade as big a success in 2017 as it’s been in years passed. “Our Love Upper Perk Halloween Parade is longer than the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade!” says McCluskie. “It's also one of the few nighttime parades, which gives it a real Halloween ambiance.” “We had over 75 entries in the parade last year; close to 200 people,” says Liz Herman, one of the dedicated organizers of the parade. “About 45% of the entries were floats, another 45% were walking groups, and 10% were our proud volunteer first responders – fire and ambulance crews.” These floats and groups include area dance academies, school teams, politicians, businesses, and boy scout troops just to name a few. There are over 10,000 spectators enjoying the Halloween Parade each year. Children watching the parade are encouraged to wear their Halloween costumes and have fun dancing to the music as they enjoy the candy many floats hand out along the route.
Kids of all ages must be careful not to walk into the road during the parade, however, even if a Milky Way lands just out of reach. With such a popular and fun event bringing out excitement in everyone it may surprise you that work for the Love Upper Perk Halloween parade is currently all done by five people. “We really need more regular volunteers to keep this wonderful tradition alive,” says McCluskie. “The volunteer time is very minimal.” Taking an hour or two of your time for a meeting each month from June until the wrap-up meeting in November is all it takes to lend a helping hand. “Because the parade is so long, a person can volunteer and still watch the parade with their family like a regular spectator!’ says McCluskie. The cutoff to register floats is Sunday, October 15th. “We need to know ahead of time, so we have paraded divisions evenly loaded and organized in a safe manner. If any late entries arrive they will be put into the last division,” says McCluskie. Registration forms are available on www.loveupperperk.org. Donations are also greatly appreciated to keep the Love Upper Perk Halloween parade going for many years to come. The History of Halloween
Trick-or-treat! The time for jacko-lanterns, candy corn, and ghost stories is finally here! Before your family heads out to the Love Upper Perk Halloween Parade or gets dressed up for a night of candy and mischief how about little haunted history? Halloween is thought to have originated with the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain around 2,000 years ago. This festival, on November 1st, marked the beginning of their new year. The Celts believed on the night before their new year began, the boundary between the worlds of the living and dead became blurred and ghosts might return to the earth. After American was discovered, Halloween was extremely limited in colonial New England and was much more common in the southern colonies. Those who celebrated did so with “harvest festivals” where colonists would tell ghost stories, sing, dance, and occasionally tell each other’s fortunes. Taking bits from different international traditions, Americans eventually began dressing up in costumes and going house to house asking for food or money, which morphed into our modern day “trick-or-treating.” In the late 1800’s Halloween became a much more community and family-oriented holiday without superstitions and mischief taking center stage (history.com).
