Thanksgiving Month

Traditions and traditional foods have found their way into every Thanksgiving meal that has been prepared at home. I asked the employees at Rann Pharmacy about the traditions held in their own homes, and was pleasantly surprised to learn how much we are all alike yet different.

Grandmothers have handed recipes down throughout the generations, and things like apple pie with crumb topping as well as old fashioned pumpkin pie always seem to make an appearance on the dessert table. Other pies on our employee’s tables included chocolate cream pie, a crustless pumpkin pie and decorated cookies. Some make attempts to offer desserts for those watching their blood sugar or waist lines, and serve treats found on sites like eatingwell.com, diabeticgourmet.com, or even recipes found on Pinterest. And what about dinner itself? Do you cook stuffing inside the turkey or in a separate bowl? Do you serve bread stuffing, oyster filling or corn filling? And

what do you call that bready side dish that is almost as important as the turkey? According to splendid.com, the difference between filling and stuffing is where you grew up. Southern residents have a tendency to call it “dressing”, while those in the northeast call it “stuffing”. “Stuffing” is cooked on the inside, “Dressing” is cooked in an outside container, and “Filling” is whatever fills up a pie shell. Butterball.com includes a map that showing that the majority of the United States calls the bready side dish “stuffing”. Whatever you call it, most recipes come from an older family member and changes and additions are not allowed! Tradition calls for turkey and potatoes, some sort of vegetable and a bready side dish. We are fortunate enough to make our own food choices and gather family around for the day. And for those that might need a boost, lets share our good fortune by donating time or food to a local food bank or shelter, so we can all experience a little home cooking in November.

more about the history of this quaint place. Deb poured me a hot apple cider, spiked with Merlot, (one of the many yummy samples she offers) and we got to chatting. It seems that one day in February, mom Linda was on a brisk morning walk through Skippack, and happened upon a store closing sign. She stopped in and spoke with the owner, and thought to herself; wouldn’t it be fun if Deb and I started a business together? They went over the very next day and spoke with the owner and 2 days later they were the proud owners of their very first retail adventure.

Shoppers at the Copper Partridge Uniquities, in the heart of Skippack Village will discover an assortment of unique and eclectic items not readily available elsewhere. The Copper Partridge Uniquities opened at 4015 Skippack Pike five years ago and since that time owners Deb Knight and her Mother Linda Milkewicz have loved helping customers find the perfect gift. With 6 rooms to explore, it’s easy to see why my assistant Fran,

Deb was a substitute teacher, who had poured her heart and soul into her career. Linda had worked in retail before, mostly at cashier jobs. But when the opportunity presented itself, the two jumped in head first, after a lot of soul searching and praying. Since that time, the two, along with their husbands who work behind the scenes with whatever projects the two need, have brought their vision to life. “It was hard to take the risk, with kids heading off to college”, says Deb. But her mom has made it easy and she considers herself blessed to have this incredible opportunity to work alongside her. “We learned as we went along” she says. “Our first year we were total deer in headlights” she chuckles. “We depended on our friends a lot in the beginning to come in and support us, or have a cup of coffee. It was really stressful in the beginning. But we are always learning, and now, 5 years later, we think we are getting it right.” Deb explains her philosophy that if she would wear it, put it in her own home, or give it as a gift, then she isn’t selling, she is sharing. That philosophy coupled with a true passion to help people is what The Copper Partridge Uniquities is all about. Some of her favorites include ginger snap jewelry, large scrabble tile letters, and yummy dip mixes and food items. And as an added bonus, they will gift wrap your treasure for free. LOCATED IN EVANSBURG STATE PARK Location: On the big bend of the Skippack Creek at end of a long Cedar-lined lane off of Lesher Road below Anders Road bridge. Approximate Date of Construction: 1860 Architectural Classification: Pennsylvania German Farmstead Historic Function: Residence/Farm Current Function: Residence Celebrating Community

Areas of Significance: House and site are both historically significant. Built by descendents of the original settler, the stone house typifies the Pennsylvania German Farm structure. The triple door fenestration on the southern facade, the orientation on the site, and the width to length proportion make this a particularly interesting example of the solitary farmstead or Einzelhof, the best of its kind in the area. It is known that Christopher Dock, the author of the first treatise on modern education lived with Yellis Cassel on this site as early as 1725. The famous teacher of Skippack School died near here in 1771. This is the original homestead in America of the extensive Cassel family and, until 1907, only succeeding generations of the Yellis Cassel family lived in this and the preceding farm house. Context of the Structure: The house overlooks a placid pool at the base of a pleasant stretch of lawn sweeping down from the house to the bend of the creek. The entire

farm of about 100 acres lies within the bend of the stream and so is completely isolated. Only unspoiled, unoccupied wood and field lands are visible from the site. Outbuildings: Summer Kitchen and smokehouse, a wood shed, a woodframe barn, stone remains of large barn. Condition of the Structure/Site: Both structures and site are in good condition. Plymouth, pilgrims, poultry, and potatoes. Thanksgiving brings to our minds lots of colorful thoughts as to what that 1st dinner might have been like. Historians believe 1621 was when the first meal took place between Plymouth colonists and several Native Americans. After a brutal winter, the colonists who had set their ship the Mayflower ashore at Plymouth Rock the previous year were weak and debilitated. In March of 1621, Squanto, who was a member of the Pawtuxet tribe, greeted them. Squanto had been previously been kidnapped by an English sea captain and sold into slavery before escaping and returning to the United States. Showing great kindness and generosity, Squanto taught the Pilgrims how to cultivate corn, extract sap from maple trees, and catch fish in the rivers. He was instrumental in helping the settlers become friendly with the Wampanoag, a local tribe. Governor William Bradford declared in November of that year the colonists and the Native American tribes they’d made alliances with should join together for a

great feast at the Plymouth Plantation in Massachusetts. As they were in harmony after a harsh journey on the Mayflower and a dreadful winter, the pilgrims thanked their Native American helpers and God for sustaining them in this new land. Thus, the first Thanksgiving was born (history.com). It wasn’t until 1863 that Abraham Lincoln’s proclamation designated the national day of Thanksgiving to be the last Thursday of November, which later was amended to the fourth Thursday in November. Although feelings of thankfulness and unity abound during our modern feasts, the mashed potatoes, stuffing and pumpkin pies we enjoy are not very similar to what the original Thanksgiving diners feasted upon. Turkey may have been featured also in addition to squash. Lobsters, fish, and venison are thought to have been on the 1st Thanksgiving menu.
