Stu SNtrERauss OW

your ard Oasis Backyawaits When planning a vacation, you probably don’t consider your backyard the destination of your dreams. Stu Strauss, owner of Daniel’s Lawn & Garden Center in Harleysville, feels a little differently. He has been working since 1987 to change the minds of the Upper Perkiomen Valley and surrounding areas.

Products range from soothing hot tubs to an array of gardening supplies and bulk goods. They also provide full landscape services. “We can do it all for you,” says Strauss. “We have quality merchandise and a good price. Being able to get the advice we can give you and the quality goods is really important. You can get everything under one roof and call us any time with any questions. At chain stores they give you a cart and tell you to ‘do your own thing.’ We also provide curbside service. Call to place your order and we can bring it right out to your car!” It’s this personal touch and care for serving the community that inspired Strauss to buy the landmark business from the Daniels family almost 34 years ago, after receiving his degree in mass

merchandising. “What I like about a seasonal business is it changes all the time. One time you’re setting up garden products, other times you’re setting up fall products, and then things for Christmas.” In addition to the business aspect of running Daniel’s, Strauss affectionately added, “I love this community. I love the area. We’re here to service everybody.”

Daniel’s Lawn and Garden showroom is set with spacious indoor and outdoor areas. Greeted with cheerful bright flowers, shining grills ready to be christened with juicy burgers and steaks, and the soothing bubble and glow of hot tubs, I was quickly dreaming about how to fit everything onto my town home’s deck. Strauss says that the hot tubs are an especially ‘hot’ item. right now.“One of the best things you can get is a hot tub. They don’t cost that much to run as far as maintenance and energy efficiency. You can get 12 months of fun out of a hot tub. As busy as people are, sometimes they’ve gotta take time for themselves.” With prices ranging from $4,000 and up, financing offered and the tubs fully guaranteed, it’s hard not to envision the change one would make in your life!

A LEADING GARDEN, LANDSCAPE, HOT TUB AND POOL SUPPLY COMPANY

Since1987

As a locally-owned business, Daniel’s is involved in making more than just people’s patios and pocketbooks happy. They provide gardening prep for Salford Elementary School, offer community events for families (including special appearances by some favorite fairytale characters), share gardening tips on their website, and much more. Why is so much community involvement important for this Lawn and Garden Center? “Children are the gardeners of the future,” says Strauss. “More and more people are looking for family entertainment and recreation. They’re looking to spend more

money and time in their backyard. They’d rather have their children in their backyards.” How would it feel to step into your backyard and feel like you’re in your own oasis, away from the hectic world? Visit Daniel’s Lawn & Garden Center at 1457 Sumneytown Pike in Harleysville, or give them a call at 610-287-9144 and ask Stu. He’ll get you excited to plan a vacation in your backyard that will last all year round!

Passion Patience

#When Meets

What started out as just a typical Friday afternoon for Kelly Weiss ended quite different than what she could have ever expected. That afternoon, she said goodbye to her two sons and headed out the door to open up shop at her family owned business, Perkiomen Valley Brewery, located in Green Lane. Even after she received a phone call from her son, Jonah, who told her that something broke and she needed to come home, she still could never have imagined what she would walk into upon re-entering her home that afternoon.

The Weiss Family

After a leisurely dinner Thursday night, Kelly left a heavy glass casserole dish out on her flattop cook top range to deal with later. She had planned to clean it when she got back from the brewery later that night. What Kelly walked into that afternoon was not only a broken glass casserole dish, but also the aftermath of a fire that had been put out by her son, Jonah! From what Kelly could surmise, the flattop cook top went berserk! The burners turned on without any input, and the stove got so hot that it started the contents of the dish on fire and exploded the glass dish!

Jonah heard the glass break from his room, where he was busy on his computer, and came into the kitchen to investigate. When he saw the fire, not only did he NOT panic, but he calmly pulled the fire extinguisher off the wall, and put out the fire! He didn’t freak out, but just took care of it as if he had done it a dozen times before. When Kelly asked him how he knew to use a fire extinguisher, he replied, “I read the directions, and by the way, it’s expired. You need to buy a new one.” Kelly laughs and explains “typical Jonah.” But Jonah is anything but typical.

I met Jonah, a lively 25 year old, shortly after that day. Jonah could be described as your classic “man”. He loves to play on his computer, watch YouTube videos, and works at the family brewery, alongside his brother, Noah, 29, and his Mom and Dad. But what makes this story so extraordinary is that both Jonah and Noah are autistic. When the fire broke out, not only did Jonah keep a calm presence and not freeze under pressure, but he did it with a level of bravery and strength that not many of us possess!

What a mess!

Proud Father & Son

“We are so incredibly proud of Jonah! Not only did he save himself and his brother, but he also saved our home from what could have been a tragedy!” says Kelly. I asked Jonah how it felt to be a hero, and he simply stated, “I’m not really a hero.” What a fine, brave young man! Kelly made sure to hug him and congratulate him and let him know what a proud mama she was. Because of Jonah and his quick actions, this was a tragedy that got stopped in its tracks. And how does one celebrate a hero? Why, with all his favorite foods of course! Filet Mignon, roasted Brussels sprouts, root beer and strawberry pie. And no hero’s celebration would be complete without a gift card to Ebay! Congratulations Jonah! And congratulations to parents Tom & Kelly Weiss, for raising not only one, but two amazing young men!

May

is...

Older American’s Month is a time for us remember, honor and celebrate the contributions our older American’s have made to our communities and future generations.

T

he past year with the pandemic and its resulting social isolation has been hard on everyone but particularly hard on our aging population. We lost so many Americans this past year due to the pandemic, but 80% (over 447,000) who died were age 65 and older. When we lose our older Americans, we also lose their memories and their stories. As local business owners, teachers, doctors, nurses, business leaders, veterans, moms, dads, and grandparents, etc. they helped shape our communities into what they are today.

Celebrating Community

ccmonthly.com | 40

Statistics show that the older population is expected to continue to grow significantly in the next 20 years. By 2040, over 80 million Americans will be age 65 and over, compared to 56 million in 2020. Yet, older adults are the most vulnerable which affects ones’ ability to safely live alone. The need for help with activities of daily living increases with age. We often assume they are doing okay because they don’t ask for help. Our loved ones don’t want to be a burden on their families. Unfortunately, something as simple as managing medications often results in a hospitalization for many older adults.

Family Caregivers Network has been caring for older adults in our communities for over 20 years. It is an honor to care for others who gave so much in their life and cared for us. Our staff are not only home care aides providing direct care, they also listen to the stories of our elders and offer support and companionship. We learn that their experiences, their successes, and their failures are what helped to shape our future generations. For more information about Family Caregivers Network and how we can help your aging loved one live safely at home, please give us a call or visit our website. We would love to hear from you!
