SittingPet you can trust

From before she could walk, Nicole, owner of Harley & Co. Pet Sitting, has been a lover of animals. Her mom will gladly tell you about all the baby animals she would rescue and bring home. Nicole owns Harley, a bi-Color German Shepherd, along with a Quarter Horse, Emma, a goat, Kevin, and two house cats, Ace and Dipstick.

She is experienced in farm sitting, from goats and sheep, to alpacas, llamas, and especially chickens! Nicole offers daily dog walks, transport services, and overnight pet sitting in your home. She treats every animal as if they were her own.

But don’t take her word for it, just look at what her customers say!

“Highly recommend Niki!!! We have never left our dog alone before, let alone with a stranger. We have a high anxiety pitbull so naturally we were nervous. We were sent pictures every day of our happy boy (along with our crazy goats who she generously took care of as well). She seemed to genuinely care and enjoy playing with our animals, Not treating it as a task or work! Even though we still missed our crazy animals she did put our minds at ease. Will 100% use her again and recommend her to others. -

“Heading out on our “Bucket List” trip to Ireland in May and the anxiety finding the best care for my BEST friend, Gilly was overwhelming. Gilly is a 16year old shepherd mix and although I hope he lives forever is very much a senior dog. Gilly saved my life and I wouldn’t trust his care to just anyone. Immediately upon our home visit, my anxiety quickly diminished. Nicole was so knowledgeable, responsive and caring to our needs that I know he is in wonderful hands. Plus, Gilly loved her! While we are away, she’ll be sending pictures and updates too! -

“Nicole was absolutely fabulous!! She was flexible and was able to fit us in last minute before our vacation after interviewing a bunch of people

that we just didn’t feel comfortable with until we met her! She kept us up to date on our two kitties, provided our one medicine, and gave them lots of love while we were away. I couldn’t have asked for anyone better that is laid back and easy going and kept me at ease!! Can’t wait to have her back! - Mia H.

“Nicole is amazing!!! I have a geriatric dog and was coming home to accidents everyday. She lets both my dogs out, gives them love, and send me pictures of my fur babies everyday! She comes highly recommended!” - Jennifer V.

8 Tips to help prevent Slip & Falls for the Elderly during Winter.

As winter approaches, it’s important to be mindful of the increased risk of slip and fall accidents, especially for the elderly. Icy sidewalks, snow-covered pathways, and wet floors can pose significant dangers to older individuals. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), falls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths among older adults, making fall prevention a critical aspect of elderly care, particularly during the winter months. Here are some essential tips to help prevent slip and falls for the elderly this winter.

1. Footwear Selection: Proper footwear is crucial for navigating slippery surfaces. Encourage the elderly to wear shoes with non-slip soles and good traction. Boots with rubber soles and a strong grip can provide stability and prevent sliding on icy or wet surfaces. Additionally, removable ice cleats or traction devices can be added to shoes for added grip on particularly treacherous terrain.

2. Clear Pathways: Keep outdoor walkways and sidewalks clear of snow, ice, and debris. Regularly shovel snow and apply ice melt to prevent the formation of slippery patches. Inside the home, ensure that floors are kept dry and free of clutter to reduce the risk of tripping.

3. Assistive Devices: For individuals with limited mobility or balance issues, consider the use of assistive devices such as canes, walkers, or trekking poles. These aids can provide additional stability and support when walking on uneven or slippery surfaces.

4. Proper Lighting: Adequate lighting is essential for improving visibility, helping seniors identify potential hazards and navigate safely. Ensure that outdoor pathways and entryways are well-lit, and consider installing motion-activated lights to illuminate areas when someone is approaching.

5. Home Modifications: Making simple modifications to the home environment can significantly reduce the risk of falls. Install handrails along staircases and in bathrooms, and consider adding non-slip mats or adhesive strips in the shower or bathtub to prevent slips.

6. Mindful Walking: Encourage the elderly to take small, deliberate steps when walking on icy or slippery surfaces. Advise them to use handrails when available and to be cautious when stepping on surfaces that appear wet or glossy, as they may be icy.

7. Regular Exercise: Maintaining strength and balance through regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of falls. Encourage seniors to engage in exercises that focus on improving balance, strength, and flexibility, such as yoga, tai chi, or simple daily stretching routines.

8. Stay Informed: Keep an eye on weather forecasts and plan activities accordingly. If there’s a forecast for inclement weather, advise elderly individuals to limit outdoor activities if possible or to take extra precautions when venturing outside.

By implementing these strategies, we can help reduce the risk of slip and fall accidents for the elderly during the winter season. It’s essential to stay proactive in addressing these risks and to promote a safe and supportive environment for older adults, allowing them to enjoy the season without unnecessary worry about potential hazards.

chew on this...

Ignoring unwanted behavior is very confusing for dog owners. I am not giving you permission to ignore the dog when he chews on inappropriate things like rocks, dirty underwear, or your furniture. I want to be very clear how to help your dog learn what is appropriate to chew on and what is not. Above all else I want your dog to be safe.

Your most powerful tool for changing a dog’s behavior is using positive reinforcement. The reward makes him more likely to repeat the behavior again. Reinforcement is not all about treats. Giving the dog feedback by giving praise is reinforcement. You are letting the dog know he has made the right decision on what is appropriate to chew. Always pay attention to your dog when your dog is being good. Reward pottying outside versus punishing for pottying inside. Reward sitting versus punishing jumping.

Out –of- date compulsion trainers may have you yank on a prong or choke collar, throw a can filled with pennies, or even scream and yell at your dog. Attempting the use of violence and intimidation may stop the unwanted behavior, but falls short of providing the information that corrects the unwanted behavior. Did you ever try to teach a child how to ride a bike by yelling at them “no, no, no” then wait for them to somehow figure it out how to do it right? Without feedback how is your dog going to make better decisions?

Force free trainers do administer corrections, but it is how we administer them. We do it proactively through management, not intimidation. Management is simply not giving the dog the opportunity to get in trouble in the first place, so we have don’t have to be reactive, but hey poop happens!

The 3 R’s - Remove, Redirect, and Reinforce

Remove: Remove the dog from the environment or things in the environment. Dog eating your underwear? Remove the dog to another room

or better yet put your underwear where he cannot get it.

Redirect: Give the dog something else to do. Having the dog play fetch is incompatible with swallowing rocks or chewing on your shoe laces.

Reinforcement: Reinforce by praising the dog for chewing on his toys, instead of yelling at the dog for chewing on your furniture or your pant leg.

Fun and flavorful recipes from our kitchen to yours!

Shrimp Scampi Risotto

Woo your valentine with this creamy super flavorful risotto dish.

Impress your Valentine with this simple yet elegant risotto. When I first started cooking, I was scared to death to make risotto. All that stirring, and adding broth at just the right time. But I am here to tell you. just follow the instructions, and stir stir stir and you will be eating like royalty in no time at all!

If you make this recipe, be sure to drop a photo on our facebook page at: @CommunityConnectionMonthly

Ingredients Instructions

• 3 tbsp. butter, divided

• 1 large onion, diced

• 4 cloves garlic, minced and divided

• 1 c. arborio rice

• kosher salt

• 4 c. low-sodium chicken broth

• 1 1/2 c. dry white wine, divided

• Juice of 2 lemons

• 2 tbsp. freshly chopped parsley, plus more for garnish

• 1 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes

• 1 lb. medium shrimp, peeled and deveined

• 1 c. freshly grated Parmesan

Shrimp:

Be sure not to overcook the shrimp. Just 3-4 minutes will do. Once shrimp is no longer opaque, remove it from the heat.

In a large deep-sided skillet or pot over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon butter. Add onion and cook until soft, 5 to 6 minutes, then add 1 clove garlic and cook until fragrant, 1 to 2 minutes more. Add rice and stir until combined, then season with salt.

In batches, begin adding broth, 1/2 cup at a time, making sure broth is fully absorbed before adding the next batch. Once broth is done, add 1 cup wine and simmer, stirring occasionally until fully absorbed.

Meanwhile, cook shrimp: In a large skillet over medium heat, melt remaining butter. Add remaining garlic, lemon juice, parsley, and red pepper flakes and stir, 2 minutes, then add shrimp and season with salt. Cook shrimp until pink, 3 to 4 minutes, then add remaining 1/2 cup wine. Bring to a simmer, then add shrimp mixture and Parmesan to risotto and stir until combined and creamy.

Serve with parsley.

Notes:

Adding some kick:

Some like it hot! Feel free to adjust the level of heat you like by adding more red pepper flakes.

Kick it up a notch:

Add in some spinach until just wilted for an extra level of flavor and color!

National Heart Month

Make time for your

Devoting a little time every day to care for yourself can go a long way toward protecting the health of your heart. Simple self-care, such as taking a moment to de-stress, giving yourself time to move more, preparing healthier meals, and not cheating on sleep can all benefit your heart. And that’s a good thing, because heart disease is largely preventable and focusing on improving your heart health has never been more important.

It may be easier than you think to “put your heart” into your daily routine. Each Sunday, look at your week’s schedule and carve out 30 minutes daily for heart-healthy practices. Take an online yoga class, prepare a heart-healthy recipe, schedule your bedtime to get at least seven hours of sleep, or make a medication checklist. Then seek out support from others, even if it’s online or via a phone call, to help you stick to your goals.

Family Caregivers Network is an award winning PA licensed home care agency that can help you to take the right steps towards a healthy heart!

Come to our healthy heart education program in February at our office in Pennsburg for educational resources and a heart-healthy gift bag!

Here is an example of a heart-healthy focused week you can implement in your life right away!

Self-Care

Sunday: Find a moment of serenity every Sunday. Spend some quality time on yourself.

Sharing Saturday:

Talk about your self-care routine with loved ones or share a selfie on your social media platforms. Inspiring others can make it easier to get regular physical activity, eat nutritious foods, reach a healthy weight, and quit smoking.

Mindful Monday: Be mindful about your health today. Monitor your blood pressure or blood sugar. Keep an eye on your weight to make sure it stays within or moves toward a healthy range.

Tasty Tuesday: Choose how you want to approach eating healthier. Start small or go big with a new diet like the Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) eating plan, which is a flexible and balanced diet that is scientifically proven to lower blood pressure.

Wellness Wednesday: Move more today! Take a walk or do some simple stretches in your home to de-stress and build strength!

Treat Yourself Thursday: Find a way to treat yourself today! Make a dessert with fruit and yogurt, host a dance party, sit still and meditate, or watch a funny show!

Fabulous Friday: Two of the main hurdles to self-care are depression and a lack of confidence. If your mental health gets between you and your fabulous self, take action to show your heart some love. Reach out to family and friends for support, or talk to a qualified mental health provider.

Heart Healthy

7 ways to be Heart Healthy all year long

“In honor of American Heart Month, now is a good time to focus on your cardiovascular health. Keeping your heart healthy can go a long way toward enjoying years of good health. One of the easiest ways to get on track is by making simple heart-healthy swaps in your meals. Here are some practical tips to help you hack your meals to make the most of your nutrition and put your heart and mind at ease.

Swap refined carbs with whole grains

Whole grains contain fiber which lowers LDL cholesterol, commonly known as the bad type. Fiber takes longer for the body to digest, so you will feel full longer than you would if you eat refined carbs. Choose oatmeal instead of corn flakes, make black rice instead of white rice for your carb for balance in your meals.

Minimize your beef intake

Choose fish, chicken, or turkey, and keep beef at a minimum. For a meatless way to replace beef, go with lentils and other beans, which have the added benefit of more fiber for filling you up. And when you do eat beef, go for the grass-fed, grass-finished, pasture raised products on the shelves - the quality of your meat matters!

Bake or broil rather than fry

You can try a simple swap: swap out fried foods for baked or broiled. You’ll notice that baked and broiled foods will taste better than fried foods, so this isn’t a hard swap to stick to! Oils like canola oil, vegetable oil, and palm oil are linked to inflammation and poor heart health. When you do cook with oils, choose ones that are higher in Omega-3 fats, like olive and avocado.

Choose nuts over chips

If it’s something crunchy you seek for a snack, choose nuts instead of going for chips. If you look at the ingredients list on a bag of potato chips, you’ll notice they contain all the oils I mentioned above that you should avoid! Nuts give you more fiber as well as unsaturated fat. Measure out some snack-sized servings of nuts to keep in your pantry for easy access.

Satisfy sweetness with fruit

Choose fruit over processed sugary treats when you feel like having something sweet. Fruit satisfies your sweet tooth and has fiber, so you’ll wind up feeling more satisfied when you make this healthy food swap.

Use avocado rather than mayo

Avocados are a heart-healthy swap you can use on your sandwiches. Instead of mayonnaise, mash up an avocado and smear it onto your whole wheat bread or wrap. It will add more flavor and nutrition while keeping your chosen bread from feeling too dry. Even the mayonnaise brands that claim they’re “made with olive oil” still manage to sneak in those other unhealthy oils (look at the ingredients list!).

Infuse water instead of drinking soda

Infusing water with lemon, cucumber, or herbs like mint gives it a delicious flavor and more nutrients. Choose to drink this over soda and other sugary drinks to keep your heart in good health.

By making these swaps, you’ll be taking small steps to achieve big results with the health of your heart. Make your appointment today with Nutrition Fix to find out what other changes you can make in your diet to work towards your health goals.

Love, hearts, owers, and chocolate are some of the rst things that come to mind when one thinks of Valentine’s Day. The celebration of candy and cupids wasn’t begun by either Hallmark or St. Valentine however, although both made contributions to how most Americans celebrate today. The exact origin of February 14th is cloudy, but what researchers do know about this holiday for honeys might surprise you.

Ancient Rome is the rst record we have for a Valentine’s Day-type celebration, except it was much more dark than gory than how most in today’s times would like to celebrate. From Feb. 13 to 15, the Romans celebrated the pagan feast of Lupercalia. Young women would actually line up for the men to hit them with the hides of sacri ced animals. They believed this would make them fertile. The bizarre also included a matchmaking lottery, in which young men drew the names of women from a jar. The couple would then be

FOREVER & Always

“coupled up” for the duration of the festival or longer if they hit it off.

The legend of the romantic known as “St. Valentine” came later. This story is also traced back to the ancient Romans. Emperor Claudius II executed two men, both named Valentine, on Feb. 14 of different years in the 3rd century A.D. Their martyrdom was honored by the Catholic Church with the celebration of St. Valentine’s Day.Later, Pope Gelasius I combined St. Valentine’s Day with Lupercalia to oust the pagan rituals. In later times the holiday grew sweeter. Chaucer and Shakespeare romanticized it in their work. Handmade paper cards became popular in the Middle Ages as what friends and lovers gave each other as tokens of affection. The industrial revolution led to factory-made cards in the 19th century. In 1913 Hallmark Cards began mass producing valentines. The rest of course, is history.

HANDY HINT relax!

Carve out time to relax: the winter months can be tough on the body, especially with the colder climate where the frigid temperatures can leave you feeling tense and the lack of sun can make you feel blue. It’s important to make time to relax – enjoy hot cups of tea, light candles, read books, and watch movies in bed!
