National Parkinson’s Awareness Month During the month of April, organizations and individuals come together to raise awareness of Parkinson’s disease, a degenerative neurological disorder that affects millions of people worldwide.

Parkinson’s disease affects over one million people in the United States with more than 90,000 new cases diagnosed each year.

Most individuals develop symptoms after the age of 60, but early onset forms of the disease can affect individuals in their 30s, 40s, 50s. Parkinson’s disease occurs when the neurons in the brain that produce the hormone dopamine begin to die. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that affects muscles and movement. Without the right amount of dopamine in our bodies we begin to experience tremors, stiffness, and difficulty moving, and balance problems. As the disease progresses, the symptoms can significantly impact one’s quality of life.

Maple Bourbon Glazed Ham When the centerpiece of your holiday meal is a beautifully glazed and delicious ham, all you need are a few family-favorite side dishes and homemade bread to complete your amazing feast.

This recipe for Maple-Bourbon Glazed Ham is easy to prepare and the five-ingredient glaze is made from ingredients you probably have on hand. The glaze forms a sweet, crunchy, and sticky crust on the salty, juicy ham—all the flavors and textures you want from a memorable holiday ham. need for your holiday dinner.

Maple Bourbon Glazed Ham Active Time: 13 mins

Total Time: 3 hrs

Servings: 10

INGREDIENTS

• 1 (8- to 9-lb.) fully cooked bone-in spiral-cut ham • 1 cup pure maple syrup • ½ cup packed dark brown sugar • ½ cup (4 ounces) bourbon • ½ teaspoon grated fresh ginger • ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon

METHOD

1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Place ham in a large roasting pan; fill pan with water to a depth of ½ an inch. Cover pan with aluminum foil. Bake in preheated oven until an instant-read thermometer inserted into thickest portion of meat registers 120°F, about 2 hours, basting ham every 30 minutes with accumulated juices in pan.

2. Meanwhile, stir together maple syrup, brown sugar, bourbon, ginger, and cinnamon in a medium saucepan; bring to a boil over medium-high. Cook, stirring occasionally, until thickened, 6 to 8 minutes. Remove from heat.

Cover to keep warm, and set aside.

3. Remove ham from oven; remove and discard foil. Increase oven temperature to 400°F. Using a pastry brush, glaze ham with ⅓ cup maple mixture; set aside remaining glaze. Return ham to oven, and bake at 400°F until top is lightly caramelized a thermometer inserted into thickest portion of meat registers 145°F, about 30 minutes, brushing with remaining glaze every 10 minutes. Remove from oven. Transfer ham to a platter; let rest 15 minutes.

Serve.
