Coffee & Snow Cone To Go is a Condell Park-based food truck operator specialising in mobile coffee and shaved-ice treats, and is a well-known sight at school fetes, local fairs, and community events, as well as events.

WEXPO has contracted Coffee & Snow Cone To Go to supply local flavour to the expo venue and says between keynote talks, breakout sessions, and exhibit visits, it’s an ideal opportunity to grab a coffee, or a snow cone, while allowing networking and conversations to continue without having to leave the conference site.

ONNECTED, the official Sydney Olympic Park community organisation, is set to play a key role in promoting WEXPO 2025 through its fast-growing local app.

The Connected platform, which has attracted thousands of residents, workers, and visitors across the Olympic Park precinct, provides a digital hub for community news, events, and opportunities. With its highly engaged user base, the app is uniquely positioned to help spread the word about WEXPO, encouraging people from across western Sydney to attend.

How a Western Sydney sleepout changed the world

One night and endless impact

T began in Western Sydney 20 years ago and is now a worldwide movement, ensuring homelessness is merely a chapter rather than a whole story in the lives of so many people.

The Vinnies CEO Sleepout has raised almost $110M to help the homeless in Australia since an intrepid first group of business and community leaders joined Bernie Fehon in sleeping out in the stands of Stadium Australia in 2006.

Across the Blacktown LGA alone Vinnies supported 4,000 people and provided $230,000 in financial and material assistance, almost half coming in the form of housing assistance in the last financial year.

So inspiring has the movement become, the CEO Sleepout has been embraced by charities around the globe as a powerful and unique way to raise funds and awareness about the plight of those living without shelter, often because of severe personal trauma or unforeseen circumstances.

Bernie Fehon, OAM, a business powerhouse who is Managing Director at Fehon Strategy & Design and the Founder of the Vinnies CEO Sleepout, will offer unique insights into the rise of one the world’s most successful charity events as a Keynote Speaker at <CT:BOLD>WEXPO 2025<CT:> at the Sydney Showground on October 22.

“The Vinnies CEO Sleepout has changed thousands of lives over the past two decades and continues to make a difference in how our communities understand homelessness,” says Fehon.

“It has moved the conversation of homelessness into the boardrooms around Australia and indeed the world, and has led to many more of our community leaders making decisions that will assist with one of our society’s biggest challenges.”

Fehon feels it is fitting that he will be discussing the rise and rise of the Vinnies Sleepout at this year’s WEXPO event at Sydney Olympic Park, given the movement started right here 20 years ago.

The novel idea of asking CEOs of our leading companies to experience what it’s like to sleep rough on the streets of Sydney in the middle of winter came as a result of Fehon being involved in the organising committee for Vinnies fund raising dinners.

“I remembering thinking it was a bit odd organising a banquet for the top end of town in support of people who can’t afford their next meal,” says Fehon.

“So I worked with a small group of people on the concept of the CEO Sleepout, where business and community leaders would seek sponsorship and commit to one night of their lives sleeping outside.

“We have found that when we get 300 or so business leaders together and give them the opportunity to listen first-hand to people who are homeless, a major shift occurs.

“Yes, it’s cold in the middle of winter, even though a good sleeping bag can help. Yes, it’s uncomfortable, but that may mean you wake up a few times during the night and have the opportunity to reflect on what it’s really like to be homeless.

“It’s clearly a very powerful experience for a lot of people who often have the means and the ability to make a difference in society. The CEOs who sign up and get involved with the Vinnies Sleepout all care... but I find that

they care a little bit more after they experience it themselves and hear from those on the streets.”

Fehon has personally camped out on all 20 Sydney Vinnies CEO Sleepouts. He’s also slept out on the Nelson Mandela Bridge in Johannesburg, South Africa, and at Lord’s cricket ground in London as part of Sleepout UK, among other local community events.

“Clearly we haven’t changed the word completely – there is a lot going on out there – but I do know we have made a difference in the lives of many thousands of people, some of whom feared they would be homeless forever.”

Homelessness is a crisis that touches millions, yet many misunderstand its reality. It is often not simply a result of poor choices or lack of effort and often stems from domestic violence, severe personal trauma or unforeseen events.

“I’ve been inspired by young men and women who have told their stories of domestic violence – and equally moved by former business owners who have fallen on hard times and found themselves homeless,” says Fehon.

The smallest acts of kindness can mean the world to people who are vulnerable and the Vinnies CEO Sleepout movement stirs the innate nature of human desire to give back and develop a desire of helping others. It sheds light on this human tragedy and inspires compassion and empathy.

Fehon’s keynote address will be one of many highlights at the upcoming WEXPO event, which has become a leading connector of business and community leaders in its first three years.

Dodd brings a rare blend of design, data science, and systems strategy to the table. Originally trained as a designer, she also holds a Master of Data Science Strategy and Leadership, and her career has spanned tech, fintech, legal, and media industries.

According to Dodd, pressure to integrate AI is mounting — often without the time, tools, or literacy to do it well.

“You don’t gain much by adopting a new tool if your systems still run like it’s 1995,” she said. “I hear ‘I should really know more about AI’ almost every day, but I rarely see follow-through.”

She draws a sharp line between effecKate Dodd. tive AI integration and blind adoption.

“AI is most useful in predictable, repetitive processes — places with strong historical data to learn from,” she explains. “But LLMs [large language models] complicate that because they sound so confident and polished. That tone often overrides healthy skepticism.”

Crucially, Dodd warns against using

AI to replace entry-level roles.

“That’s a short-sighted move,” she said. “It erodes the pipeline of future talent and ignores the fact that building the necessary infrastructure takes serious investment.”

She likened AI to an untrained employee — powerful but useless without context and direction.

“We’re in a game of catch-up,” Dodd said. “Leadership needs to set the minimum standard for quality and security before it's too late.”

An advocate for the vulnerable

A

S a haven for a vulnerable community, the not-for-profit organisation Adventist Development and Relief Agency Australia (ADRA) has been quietly working away in Blacktown for over two decades.

ADRA is WEXPO’s charity Partner for 2025. It’s a place which offers free counselling and general support services to individuals and families, ADRA works with people in poverty and distress to create positive changes by empowering partnerships and responsible action.

It was 1999 when a handful of Seventh Day Adventist Church volunteers started a humble soup kitchen in Cabramatta to serve the homeless community.

Very soon, they realised that the community there needed much more than warm meals – they needed someone to lend an empathetic ear to listen to their concerns, their stories of loss and pain.

And that is exactly when ADRA incorporated counselling services for the community members. The thought was simple – they wanted to provide struggling members with a supportive and safe space to work through their challenges and emotional battles. They looked at empowering them by developing skills and equipping them with confidence to build brighter futures.

As Cabramatta started receiving more support from the government, ADRA assessed other areas in Greater Sydney where the community would benefit from such support. So, it was in 2004, with the hope to support more struggling community members with its counselling services and food relief, that ADRA opened its doors in Blacktown.

From then on, the centre has only grown in strength and popularity, adding case management along the way to its services.

“Services here are free in order to support those most vulnerable in the community who often fall through the cracks of other support services due to lack of funds and resources,” says Grace Copoceanu, centre manager at ADRA Blacktown.

Hard to believe but the centre’s operations are run with just 2.5 paid staff.

The biggest help comes from a group of 70 volunteers and students who help run the programs.

The counselling and case management services require professionally trained staff and when faced with a shortage of such volunteers, ADRA includes intern students who work under the supervision of trained staff. And then there are volunteers who work as food service staff, in administration and as delivery drivers etc.

Mental health support is most needed.

At ADRA, they deal with a wide gamut of social issues, and mental health support is widely sought-after by the community. There are people battling trauma, abuse, grief, mental illness, addictions and behaviour challenges. They are referred by health services, corrective services and other community and social services to seek help at ADRA. “They are often community members

who struggle with barriers such as poverty, language barriers, illiteracy, mental illness, physical and mental disabilities, addictions and lack of education and access to resources,” says Grace.

At ADRA, the food relief service provides food parcels to financially struggling community members, be it caused by homelessness, poverty, domestic violence or other emergency situations.

Growth at the Centre Currently, ADRA Blacktown provides more than 1000 counselling sessions each year to around 250 individuals. It also provides around 1000 case management to 200 community members or families seeking the support.

Also, the centre provides 14,000 struggling visitors with food relief parcels annually. This food goes to feed over 40,000 adults and children every year.

Significantly, this demand was much lower before the onset of COVID and rise in cost of living.

To keep up with demand for the food service, ADRA has continued to recruit volunteers, hired a part time supervisor and connected with food rescue organisations such as Oz Harvest, Second Bite and Foodbank. Between two and three tons of food each week is sourced while a dedicated team of 20 volunteers deliver, sort and serve the food parcels.

The counselling team has also grown to a 14 professional students and volunteers providing their service every week.

The community’s high demand for food relief only means that ADRA Blacktown is now looking for a bigger physical space to effectively run its food service programs.

The biggest challenge “Individuals seeking help are often those out of work and struggling to make ends meet - seeking that extra parcel of food to help them get through the week.

Then there are homeless individuals going hungry for days. Counsellors get cases of people struggling with mild levels of depression and anxiety as also individuals having experienced rape, family murders, loss of children or wars in their home countries – many burst into tears as they get a sense of safety at our centre,” said Grace.

While there are no geographical limitations, most of their clients come from Western Sydney – Blacktown LGA in particular. Blacktown, with lower socioeconomic indexes, lower levels of tertiary qualifications and higher unemployment rates compared to NSW average, was assessed as an area of need of service, given its vulnerable population.

The need of the hour is more supporters and a steady flow of funds to keep the good work going at the Centre.

Its operations are totally dependent on donations and while they aim to intervene meaningfully and provide relief to those in need, the need of the hour is funds. “We invite anyone interested in supporting us with funds to reach out and help the most vulnerable in the community,” says Grace.

A case for action

CTOBER is Small Business Month, a time to celebrate and support the backbone of local economies in NSW. The state’s 870,000 small businesses make up 97 per cent of all NSW businesses.

These small businesses employ 1.7 million people in NSW, which is about 40 per cent of the state’s workforce.

This October, Small Business Month is about more than celebration. It’s about action. Small businesses across NSW consistently tell us that red tape is one of their biggest barriers to growth, limiting productivity and innovation.

That’s why, alongside a month of events to celebrate and support small business, the NSW Government, through the NSW Small Business Commission is launching a targeted red tape initiative.

Small business owners and their representative bodies are invited to share their experiences with compliance and compliance burden through a short survey or interview. These insights will help identify pain points and shape practical reforms to make it easier to do business in NSW. Coinciding with Small Business Month, the survey will run from Wednesday 1 October until Friday 31 October 2025.

In addition to sharing red tape experiences, Small Business Month provides oppor-

tunities for small business owners to learn new skills, develop a business idea, build networks, and access advice and support.

The month-long event features a full calendar of online and face-to-face events, including workshops, webinars, and networking sessions across NSW. Aligned to individual business interests, the events cover a diverse range of topics such as social media, consumer behaviour, mental health, business growth, cyber security, workplace health and safety, and more.

October is also Indigenous Business Month which aims to inspire the next generation of Indigenous entrepreneurs.

Aboriginal people make up three per cent of the population in NSW, but only 1 per cent of small businesses. The theme for this year is strength through collaboration, highlighting the power of Indigenous businesses working together.

The NSW Government is committed to ensuring there is a thriving NSW small business sector and have already delivered, or are in the process of delivering, key initiatives including: • Vibrancy reforms – more than 800 new businesses have joined the nighttime economy, growing the sector by 1.6 per cent and cementing NSW as a world class nighttime destination. New reforms, announced on Saturday, have made it easier for businesses and communities to

stage events, host live performances, and activate outdoor spaces.

• Procurement changes – it is now easier for government agencies to buy directly for small and medium businesses without going to tender, resulting in the NSW Government’s spend on these businesses surpassing $10B for the rst time.

• Mutual Recognition Scheme – mobile businesses, like tness trainers and food trucks, will soon be able to operate across different councils without needing multiple approvals.
