ONG local is the mantra for businesses to thrive and the economy to grow sustainably, says Hills Shire Mayor, Dr Peter Gangemi. Hills Shire Council has put together a draft economic growth plan and he encourages every business, small or big, in the Hills to read this plan. “We have a lot of business and residential growth happening here, we want to try and have the jobs here in the Hills that match the skills of our workforce,” says Mayor Gangemi. And it is here that the upcoming WEXPO Hills event will help fill in the gaps. “WEXPO is a great opportunity for people to connect, learn and grow – connect with other business, learn from the workshops and speakers and grow their businesses with the endless opportunities available at the event,” he said. GROWING HILLS WITH OPPORTUNITY

G

WEXPO connecting businesses

ONG local is the mantra for businesses to thrive and the economy to grow sustainably, says Hills Shire Mayor, Dr Peter Gangemi. Hills Shire Council has put together a draft economic growth plan and he encourages every business, small or big, in the Hills to read this plan – which is a vision of how they wish to grow the economy and support local jobs in the Hills. There are four key elements that have been identified – healthcare, education, professional and advanced manufacturing. Also, one of the ways in which the Council wants to intervene is to connect people living in the area to local jobs. WEXPO facilitates face-to-face interaction, connection with exhibitors, option to attend the business chamber breakfast and jobs forum and in the opportunity unlock value for business owners and managers. Mayor Gangemi is Patron of WEXPO Hills. He and his team are committed to growing the local economy and create jobs for the locals, and support business. The Hills currently has 200,000 residents and is expected to grow to 290,000 residents by 2036. A look at the businesses in the Hills – 23,000 to grow by at least 20,000 businesses by 2041. This environment translates to a huge potential for business, more so given the highly educated workforce in the area. 41% of the workforce in the Hills have a

bachelor’s degree and above and that offers significant opportunities to companies that operate in the region. Rising costs and inflation Mayor Gangemi identified rising costs and inflation as one of the major deterrents to the business community. A survey undertaken every year by the Council, points at how businesses are adversely affected given the rising costs and inflation. “We have to offer significant value to our businesses here in the Hills. And I think we already do. We have a large population of highly skilled workforce, so businesses that are here have unparalleled access to talent compared to other areas of Sydney,” said Mayor Gangemi. Add to that – events like WEXPO and stakeholders like the Sydney Hills Business Chamber, BNI, Mentor to Mentor and

there is great value and support for business from Council. Mayor Gangemi thinks this engagement gives Council an advantage to meet challenges that the wider business community across Sydney are facing. To assist businesses, there is an economic development team which meets with business, makes people aware of the many grants that are available, the services available statewide and the different resources available in the community including workshops to assist them. Exponential growth in the Hills The Hills Shire Council just released three precinct plans to open significant job growth through to 2041 and beyond. The first one looks at the Castle Hill Precinct, where the growth is tilted towards the hospitality sector (Eats Street and leisure-based entertainment).

The second one focusses on Rouse Hill, where the upcoming hospital will drive jobs in the health sector. Allied services around the hospital is expected to boost the job growth here. At Norwest, it will be a mix of residential, business and commercial sector, concentrating on the two stations in Norwest Business Park. Then there are the industrial parks at Annagrove Road and Box Hill, which are also looking good to contribute to the job boost. So, the rising population and the additional employment going into these employment precincts make up for endless opportunities for business in the Hills district. WEXPO Hills is being held at Castle Grand on October 11, 2023 with 44 exhibitors, six FREE workshops and a Business Chamber breakfast. Visit www.wexpo.com.au

Tips for finding authentic success

EING successful in business is as much about mindset as it is about skill. In over a decade of clinical practice, success coach Marcus Whelan has seen the unfortunate effects of spiralling stress and burnouts on families, relationships, businesses, and the wider community. He has some lessons for business owners and managers which he shares ahead of his presentation at WEXPO Hills October 11. What key issue you mostly help business owners resolve and how? I help business owners reduce stress due to poorly balanced lifestyle and lack of goals clarity. These are mostly due to their goals being externalised and not enough consideration of their implicit meaning of their life’s goals to ascertain what’s truly important. As we age, we are supposed to evolve, and often business owners do grow their business but personally managing themselves becomes a challenge because they have not given WESTERN SYDNEY EXPRESS October 2023

Markus Whelan.

enough attention to their own personal growth and evolution. My coaching is focused on helping them create goals that are deeply important and mentoring them with skills to work around blind spots such as mid-life crisis for example that keep them stuck.

What trend in your industry business owners need to be aware of and how can they prepare for it? Stress and burnout among workers are on the rise post Covid. The workplace environment has changed, and we are in a process of normalising the new. People value belongingness and engagement along with meaning and purpose in their lives. Leadership is key, it must come from a place of self-awareness and insight but also engagement and collaboration with your team. People work better when inspired by authentic leaders who not only demonstrate authority but compassion. People want to be inspired so it isn’t about how much money they make. Companies are now being evaluated on their well-being programs and new studies showed those who value and incorporate well-being do better in terms of ROI. What quote inspires you and why? Wayne Dyer said, ‘When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change’. This reminds me that mindset and perception is our reality.

We can truly see ourselves and the world in an almost infinite number of ways. It allows me to remain open to experience and not attached to how things should be. What is one habit business owners should adopt and why? Put your health first. Mentors I have worked with say “always pay yourself first”. So, why not put yourself and your health first too? After all, if you’re not healthy and happy, whatever that means to you, then what’s the point of having a successful business? Call it healthcare, self-care, and personal development. We cannot buy time, but we can make it. I have 3 staples I practise every day – meditation, exercise and journaling. A total of 30-60 minutes a day. These are my own lived experiences because I care about stress prevention, staying focused so I feel good to go about my day with a better mindset, attitude and resolve. It s no surprise that BNI Sydney North West & Penrith has over 530 members, pass 2000+ referrals, have 700+ visitors annually, and close $27M in business between members. No, that s not a typo! What you can expect as a member is access to professional development and plug into a powerhouse network of business people who know how to give meaningful referrals and understand their value. Bottom line, people join BNI to get work and to receive referrals. But that s not why they stay. They stay because of the support they receive.
