LIVERPOOL Council’s three-day Lunar New Year festival – Lanterns and Lights – drew 47,000 people to the city and pumped more than $3 million into the area’s economy.
Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun said the result – a huge attendance and an economic boost – showed the worth of the Council’s festivals programs.
“Not only did tens of thousands of people get out of their houses and enjoy a relatively affordable entertainment event, but the festival was a catalyst for economic development.
“Liverpool’s festivals attract visitors,
boost tourism, and increase demand for local goods and services, benefiting small businesses, restaurants, and hotels.
“By supporting events that cater to a wide range of interests and cultural groups, the council can help bridge divides and foster a more harmonious, connected community.
“It also shows that Liverpool is a hub of cultural activity that can tourists, media attention, and potential investors.
“Lanterns and Lights cost the council $200,000 to stage. It brought $3.2 million into the local economy.
That’s why these festivals are so important to both Council and the community,” he said.
At this year’s festival we were entertained by lion dances, roving entertainers, traditional dance troupes and performances by
Chinese, Thai, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Japanese performers.
Activities included face painting, free Chinese Calligraphy workshops, kids’ activities including paper lantern making, hand fan decorating, lion mask colouring and other arts and crafts.
To top it off there was dazzling entertainment and a vast array of appetising food from China, Vietnam, Japan, Cambodia, Laos, Taiwan, the Philippines, as well as other flavours from around the world.
Macquarie Mall played host to food,
dancing, culture and performers from across the nations of Asia.
“Lantern and Lights is part of our award-winning “Experience the World” series of festivals that last year brought 1.5 million visitors to the city and pumped $25 million into the Liverpool economy,” the Mayor said.
“Festivals such as Most Blessed Nights, Pasifika and Primavera show our commitment to celebrating the multicultural diversity of our wonderful city and celebrate the commonalities that unite us.

ANEW kayak launch facility is officially open at Liverpool’s Light House Park, providing easy access to the natural wonders of the upper Georges River.
Supported by the NSW Government and delivered by Liverpool City Council, the accessible facility is the first of its kind in Greater Sydney.
The new dock sets a groundbreaking standard for accessibility on the water, giving water enthusiasts a new gateway to a previously difficult to reach part of the river. This is just phase one of the redevelopment of Light Horse Park, which will transform the area into a vibrant, inclusive
and modern community space.
The NSW Government has invested $900,000 in the upgrade as part of a Western Sydney Infrastructure Grant, with an additional $163,870 from Transport for NSW Maritime.
Transport for NSW has funded more than 389 projects like this one since 2014 to develop, upgrade and deliver public maritime infrastructure and facilities across NSW.
Liesl Tesch MP, Parliamentary Secretary for Disability Inclusion said: “Accessing our beautiful waterways should not be a luxury for people with disability and access needs and it is fantastic to see
Lthat every person can now get out on the stunning upper Georges River. The NSW Government is committed to supporting a more inclusive NSW for all, creating an accessible, welcoming community where everyone can enjoy our beautiful outdoors.”
Charishma Kaliyanda, Member for Liverpool said: “As a community, we’re so lucky to have this wonderful waterway on our doorstep, and it should be accessible for everyone to enjoy.
“This new launch facility is a game changer for our community, allowing paddlers of all abilities to enjoy a day out on the beautiful Upper Georges River.
IVERPOOL City Council has called on Premier Chris Minns to honour his promise that the upgrade of Fifteenth Avenue will be a “world class piece of transport infrastructure”.
In a Mayoral Minute unanimously adopted by the Council, the council also decided to thank all those who committed to or assisted the council to gain the $1B upgrade to the crucial road link to Western Sydney International Airport.
Currently, a two-lane suburban road, Liverpool City Council wants it to be a high capacity, multimodal transport corridor that serves the region for decades to come, Mayor Ned Mannoun said. “Fifteenth Avenue is poised to turn
Notification of project proposal and registration of interest under Heritage NSW Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents 2010 (Stage 1) – Proposed development located at 28 Rouse Road, Rouse Hill
McCardle Cultural Heritage (MCH) have been engaged by Acuity Growth on behalf of the Proponent (Signature Properties No 22 Pty Ltd, 6d/7 Meridian Pl, Bella Vista NSW 2153) to prepare an Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Assessment (ACHA) and Section 90 Aboriginal Heritage Impact Permit (AHIP) application, if required, for the proposed development located at 28 Rouse Road, Rouse Hill (Lot 184 DP208203)
The purpose of community consultation with Aboriginal people is to assist the proposed applicant in the preparation of the AHIP application if required and to assist Heritage NSW in their consideration and determination of the application should an AHIP be required.
In compliance with the Heritage NSW policy - Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Consultation Requirements for Proponents 2010, MCH would like to extend an invitation to Aboriginal people who hold cultural knowledge relevant to the proposed project area and who can determine the signi cance of Aboriginal object(s) and/or place(s) in the area of the proposed project to register an interest in the consultation process for this project. Written registrations must be forward to MCH (P.O. Box 166 Adamstown, NSW, 2289; penny@mcheritage.com.au no later than C.O.B. 3rd April 2025.
All registered parties will then be contacted to discuss the project in compliance with Heritage NSW policy. If you register your interest in this project, please also nominate your preferred option to receive the initial information. You may wish to attend a non-paid meeting and receive an information pack, or receive an information packet through the mail or e-mail. Any parties who register are advised that, unless otherwise requested, their details will be forward to Heritage NSW and the relevant LALC within 28 days of the closing date of registration and in compliance with Heritage NSW policy.
into Liverpool’s main link to the Bradfield and beyond,” the Mayor said.
“Currently, more than 22,000 vehicles per day use the two-lane Fifteenth Avenue.
“Residents face congestion every day and it will only worsen as Austral and surrounding suburbs continue to develop.
“The pressure on our local road network is already unsustainable, and further delays will continue to diminish the quality of life for our residents.
“In order for the road to be worldclass, Fifteenth Avenue needs at least six lanes – including a fast transit corridor.
“The upgrade must include footpaths and cycleways which promote active transport, enhance liveability and ensure pedestrian safety.
“Such a design will ensure seamless movement of people and goods, reducing congestion and travel times while facilitating economic growth.
“Connecting Fifteenth Avenue to Bradfield and Western Sydney International Airport should not be deferred to a later stage beyond the announced 2031 delivery timeframe (4 years commencing 2027) – the community needs this upgrade now.
COUNCIL’S new premier facility for football in The Hills is one step closer with Council calling for expressions of interest for a long-term premier football partner for Caddies Creek Reserve Stage 2 in Beaumont Hills.
Mayor of The Hills Shire, Dr Michelle Byrne said the partnership will raise the district-level facility to new heights.
“Caddies Creek Reserve is already one of our largest and most central sports complexes, with access to Rouse Hill Town Centre and public transport from the North-West T-way and Metro stations close by,” Mayor Byrne said.
“In 2024, football registrations in The Hills increased by ten per cent. The Hills Shire’s population is growing rapidly, and the influx of new residents means we need more facilities like sports fields to service our community.”
Council has been working to establish pathways to elite level participation in several popular sports through partnerships to provide state-of-the-art training and competition facilities.
Currently, premier facilities exist for basketball, tennis, AFL, cricket, and rugby league, with plans underway to develop premier facilities for football, hockey, and rugby union. The premier football partnership at Caddies Creek Reserve Stage 2 is a key step toward this vision.
Caddies Creek Reserve currently features three full-sized football fields,
baseball diamond, two amenities’ buildings, playground, car park and shared pathway network. The reserve was opened in August 2018. In 2024, the NSW Government also opened Beaumont Hills Park, a skate park adjacent to Caddies Creek Reserve, as part of the Parks for People program.
The Draft Master Plan for Caddies Creek Sports Complex – Stage 2 was adopted by Council following community consultation in October 2021. Once completed, Caddies Creek Reserve will feature:
• An additional four full-sized football fields.
• Mini small-sided football fields.
• Amenities building.
• Car park and.
• Pathways and access to the site from Windsor Road and Sanctuary Drive.
AMONASH University study found that eating eggs 1-6 times per week is linked to a 29% lower risk of cardiovascular disease-related death and a 15% lower risk of all-cause mortality in older adults. Published in Nutrients, the study suggests eggs provide essential nutrients and support longevity, especially in moderate-to-high-quality diets. Findings also indicate no increased risk for individuals with high cholesterol, supporting eggs as a nutritious, accessible food for older adults.
AS self-driving and semi-autonomous vehicles become more common, legal questions arise about liability in accidents. Slater and Gordon’s Bree Smith highlights the evolving legal landscape, emphasizing the need for public awareness. While fully autonomous cars remain in trials, semi-autonomous features like Tesla’s Autopilot complicate fault determination. With no uniform national laws yet, the Federal Government is developing the Automated Vehicle Safety Law to regulate autonomous driving by 2030 and clarify liability issues.
THE NSW Government is fast-tracking housing approvals by cutting red tape and ensuring faster water and wastewater infrastructure connections. The Housing Approval Reform Action Plan—a collaboration between DCCEEW, Sydney Water, and WaterNSW—aims to streamline
approvals, expand risk-based triaging, and enhance industry engagement. With a $2.2B investment in infrastructure, the plan supports faster construction while maintaining environmental sustainability, reinforcing the government’s commitment to addressing NSW’s housing crisis.
WOOLWORTHS has expanded its Quiet Hour to five days a week, offering a low-sensory shopping experience for customers with sensory sensitivities. Running Monday to Friday, 10:30-11:30am, most stores will reduce lighting, lower noise, and minimize disruptions. Launched in 2019 with Life Without Barriers, Quiet Hour now operates in 900+ stores nationwide, enhancing accessibility and independence for customers. The expansion follows successful trials during peak shopping periods like Christmas.
THE NSW Government has strengthened laws to criminalize all sexual relationships between prison staff and inmates, removing the need to prove risk to prison safety. The Crimes (Administration of Sentences) Act 1999 now imposes criminal liability, including prison sentences. This follows an inquiry into misconduct at Dillwynia Correctional Centre, with all 31 recommendations accepted to improve transparency, safety, and trust in NSW corrective services.
MASTER Builders Australia welcomes the RBA’s interest rate cut but stresses the need for Federal Government action on housing and cost-of-living challenges. While lower rates provide relief, core issues like land shortages, planning delays, workforce constraints, and rising construction costs remain. With construction costs up 40% in five years and build times extended by 80% over 15 years, urgent reforms are needed to streamline approvals and boost productivity.
THE Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) has updated its Koala Personality Quiz, adding new Koalas from its Adopt a Koala program. The fun, interactive quiz helps participants discover their Koala match while learning about conservation. With engaging prompts and interactive elements, AKF aims to boost awareness and encourage Koala adoptions. Available now on their website, users can share results on social media to spread the conservation message.
THE NSW Council of Social Service (NCOSS) welcomes the NSW Government’s gambling reform consultation papers but stresses that mandatory cashless gaming remains the most effective harm-minimization tool. The papers propose facial recognition technology and a third-party exclusion register to help problem gamblers. While NCOSS supports these measures, CEO Cara Varian urges a statewide exclusion register and calls on the government to implement mandatory cashless gaming as recommended by experts.
AMONASH University study has ranked Tasmania and Hobart as Australia’s healthiest places to live, while Darwin and the Northern Territory ranked the unhealthiest. The Environmental Quality Health Index (EQHI) assesses air quality, green spaces, climate, and socioeconomic factors to measure health risks. Coastal regions generally scored higher than inland areas. The study highlights the need for targeted improvements in lower-scoring regions to reduce health risks and promote wellbeing across Australia.

DIAGNOSED with congenital heart disease in utero, given less than 2% survival chance given at birth, three heart surgeries within the first six months of her life, suffering a stroke and heart failure forcing her to spend her first Christmas in hospital, Tania Mastroianni has indeed come a long way.
At 30 now, she lives with a permanent pacemaker and is an accomplished entrepreneur, the proud founder and director of Business with a Heart, whose mission is to bring joy and happiness to sick children and their families.
According to HeartKids, an estimated 2,400 babies are born with a form of congenital heart disease each yea’’r nationally and many more develop heart conditions during childhood.
To reach out and raise awareness about it, Business with a Heart engages with the wider community of people (immediate and extended families) and educates them about living life with kids diagnosed with life threatening medical conditions.
As a goodwill gesture, they make bears to hand out to sick children in hospitals, thus giving them some hope and joy in the process.
Why a bear, one might wonder? Well, it has a deep personal connection with founder Tania.
“I was given a teddy bear at six months old, whilst in hospital. I am now 30 years old, and still have that teddy bear that has been coming with me to every operation. The bear for me, is a symbol of hope, protection, and love. It is the only thing that is able to come with me into a theatre room- and the first thing I see at the end of my bed when I wake up.
“As you can imagine, loved ones are unable to come into the ICU recoverytherefore when you wake up it's scary to hear a different nurse or doctor- so having something that is consistent is comforting,” says Tania.
It was a thoughtful conversation during lockdown with her mother about doing something for the iso-
lated children in hospitals that Tania came up with the concept of ‘making’ a bear and giving it away for them to keep.
This pretty much led to children in the hospitals making their own bears. Tania also started assisting the elderly with rehabilitation and physio in nursing homes and they too joined in the initiative.
As on date, over 2,000 children across Australia have been gifted a teddy bear. Some beneficiary hospitals include Gosford Hospital, Westmead children's Hospital, Perth Children's Hospital, Royal North Shore Hospital and Randwick Children's Hospital.

THERE are only a few weeks left until the winners of the Sydney Hills Local Business Awards are announced at a gala presentation to be held on April 30 at Castle Hill RSL Club.
It is a tight race, according to Precedent Productions Managing Director and Awards founder Steve Loe.
“Our judges are always impressed by the high standard of the Central Coast Local Business Awards finalists,” he said.
Mr Lowe said that the high quality of the Sydney Hills finalists came as no surprise.
“After more than 30 years of running the Local Business Awards, I know that businesses in the Sydney Hills are adaptable and hard-working.
“This year is no exception and our judges have said it has been more difficult than ever to separate this year’s awards contenders and determine winners in each category.”
“They always put their best foot forward and ensure that their customers receive outstanding products and
service.
“That is why it is also unsurprising that the local community throws its support behind those businesses both during the awards period and throughout the year.
“While there can only be one winner in each category, as far as I am concerned every finalist is a winner.”
Mr Lowe called on the Sydney Hills community to recognise the generosity of the Awards’ major sponsors and supports sponsors including medis partner, Access News and Western Sydney
Express.
“Without their support, this program would simply not be possible,” he said.
“The gala event presentation features wonderful entertainment, with local dignitaries in attendance, but the real stars of the show are the finalists and winners,”
Mr Loe said.
“As always, Access News editorial staff will cover the event, with a special feature that lists all the winners as well as pictures from the night, to be published the following week.

PHYSICAL activity is a crucial part of a child’s development, and engaging in sports from an early age offers numerous benefits.
For children under 10, participating in sports isn’t just about staying active; it contributes to their physical, mental, and social growth. Whether it’s soccer, swimming, gymnastics, or martial arts, playing sports helps shape a well-rounded and confident child.
One of the most obvious benefits of sport is improving physical health. In a world where screen time is increasing and outdoor play is decreasing, sports provide an essential way for children to stay active. Regular physical activity helps:
• Improve cardiovascular health by strengthening the heart and lungs.
• Build strong bones and muscles, reducing the risk of injuries and conditions like osteoporosis later in life.
• Maintain healthy weight, reducing the risk of childhood obesity and associated health problems like diabetes.
• Enhance motor skills, coordination, and balance, which are vital for overall physical development.
Young children who engage in sports are more likely to develop a lifelong habit of staying active, setting them up for a healthier future.
Sports don’t just benefit the body— they also have a profound impact on a child’s mental and emotional health. Physical activity is known to release endorphins, which can improve mood and reduce stress. Additionally, sports help children develop important psychological skills, such as:
• Confidence and self-esteem –Achieving goals, learning new skills, and receiving praise from coaches and teammates boost a child’s self-confidence.
• Resilience and perseverance –Sports teach children to handle setbacks, whether it’s losing a game or struggling with a new skill. They learn to keep try-
ing and develop a growth mindset.
• Concentration and discipline – Many sports require children to focus, follow instructions, and practice regularly, which helps improve their attention span and self-discipline.
For children under 10, social development is just as important as physical and mental growth. Sports provide an excellent opportunity for children to learn how to interact with others, make friends, and work as part of a team. Through sports, they develop:
• Communication skills – Whether it’s calling for a pass in soccer or listening to a coach’s instructions,
sports encourage verbal and non-verbal communication.
• Teamwork and cooperation –Working together toward a common goal teaches children the importance of collaboration and supporting others.
• Respect and sportsmanship –Learning to win gracefully and lose with dignity helps children develop empathy and respect for others.
Introducing children to sports at a young age encourages them to develop positive habits that last a lifetime. They learn the importance of regular exercise, a balanced diet, and good sleep patterns—essential components of a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, participating in sports keeps children engaged in productive activities, reducing the likelihood of them developing sedentary habits or unhealthy lifestyle choices as they grow older.
Sports play a vital role in the overall development of children under 10. From physical fitness and mental well-being to social skills and life lessons, the benefits are undeniable. Encouraging young children to participate in sports not only helps them stay healthy and active but also equips them with essential skills for future success. Whether through structured team sports or casual outdoor play, every child can benefit from the joy and rewards of being active.

ISTARTED as the ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ of the group. Having just turned 50 and never having been at the controls of a boat or a PWC (personal watercraft) in my life, I was going to keep things pretty conservative.
With a few simple instructions on how to safely enjoy the latest Sea-Doo Personal Watercraft, such as maintain a safe distance because there are no brakes and wear a lifejacket, but then it was like, hang on, this is fun.
I was feeling the thrill of excitement the faster I went. They said in the safety
briefing, it’s easier to turn once you have a bit of speed. Reaching speeds of up to 70km per hour, faster than the limit on most roads, I started weaving my turns with greater accuracy and precision.
This is an adventure in our own backyard. Just 30 minutes from Sydney exploring our wonderful waterways, I became quickly addicted to this new leisure pursuit. Who wouldn’t be?
“Believe me my young friend, there is NOTHING, absolutely nothing, half so much worth doing as simply messing about in boats.” (Wind in the Willows).
LIFE Sydney Aquarium and the Australian National Maritime Museum, ensuring there’s no shortage of adventure to be had.
Offer Inclusions:
• Overnight accommodation.
• Daily buffet breakfast at BARKERS Restaurant (kids eat free!.)
• A cozy in-room teepee for your little explorers.
• Explorer Pack including binoculars, disposable camera and an Explore Local map curated by our PARKROYAL Local.

Room rates start from $w290 per night. Offer is valid for stays between 11th April - 30th April 2025.
Finally, this made sense to me. As we darted along the Hawkesbury River, under bridges, over wakes, watching for the ebbs and flows and stopping to take in the amazing waterfall and the
shipwreck of the HMAS Parramatta, we were adventuring to places only reachable by water, with the sound of cicadas as our cheer-squad.
Jet Ski Safaris NSW at Brooklyn is offering a number of fun days out onboard Sea-Doo personal watercraft, at an affordable and accessible entry point for enthusiasts of all levels. With Jet Ski Safaris, you don’t even need to have your boat or PWC license to get started.
As we cruised back to the Brooklyn Marina for lunch, I was already planning my return. First to bring my kids, maybe an extended family day out, but also how much fun would a ladies’ morning out zipping around the water, followed by lunch be?
Australia has some of the best waterways in the world and boating is a great way to experience the great outdoors whether it is by PWC, power boat, sailing boat or paddle craft. This summer why not get out on the water with family or friends and soak up the vast health benefits, recharge the batteries and create lasting memories.
Head to jetskisafarisnsw.com.au to book in a session, sea-doo.brp.com to checkout the latest models and equipment, or discoverboating.com.au for more details on how you can get on the water.

Set in a rapidly developing area, this is a great time to visit before prices rise and adjacent new high-end developments take shape.
First impressions
From the moment we arrived, we were completely enchanted by the stunning cliffside vistas and sparkling views of nearby beaches such as Uluwatu, Dreamtime and Ngang Ngang. Mazari Villas is just 50 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport, making it convenient without sacrificing the exclusivity of its location.
As we neared the villa, our driver snaked through winding, secluded streets, lined with lush tropical gardens. This only heightened our anticipation of arriving at a luxurious, up-and-coming enclave that promises to be the next must visit Bali destination.
When we arrived at Mazari Villas, we were greeted with warmth and professionalism by our Villa Butler, Adhi, whose impeccable service immediately set the tone for our stay. Available 24/7 via WhatsApp, Adhi was quick to offer recommendations, arrange transport, and cater to any special requests. We were treated to a thorough villa tour with a refreshing arrival drink, and could immediately see why Mazari Villas is on the cusp of discovery for Bali lovers.
The villa itself was a modern
mansion, inspired by the crisp, whitewashed feel of Santorini. The open-air design featured pristine white walls, complemented by an aquamarine Mediterranean-style in-villa pool that was all ours. A cosmopolitan layout, with furnishings and artwork chosen to enhance the serene and inviting atmosphere.
Villas and In-villa services
We were fortunate to spend two nights in the Iona Villa, a two-bedroom residence that felt like our own magical escape. The villa was spacious with large floor to ceiling windows that allowed natural light to cascade throughout. One of the highlights was the sunken living room, which created
a cozy and intimate mood. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring the area or lounging by the pool.
We also enjoyed the new smart TV, which offered plenty of entertainment options for a quiet night in.
The villa also came equipped with a curated ‘Uluwatu Essentials’ and ‘Curated Experiences’ guides, thoughtfully put together by our Villa Butler. This guide not only included recommendations for local restaurants, but also insights into the best spas, beaches, and the most scenic sunset spots. Whether a local surf lesson, fishing trip or bespoke art and craft workshop takes your fancy, Mazari will effortlessly cater to your needs.
One of the best aspects of staying at Mazari Villas was the freedom to indulge in a variety of dining options without having to leave the property. While the villa’s kitchen was fully equipped and operational for cooking up a feast, we opted to take advantage of Bali’s thriving delivery culture. With apps like Gojek and Grab, it was easy to have delicious, local meals delivered straight to our door, often within 30 minutes.
The team provides a well-edited list of the best eateries in the area, making it simple to explore local cuisine. We enjoyed dinner by the pool, sipping California wine while sampling a range of Balinese dishes, from international to Indonesian favourites.
A fun and unexpected find just around the corner was Fleur Caf?, offering fresh coffee and pastries in a laidback atmosphere, making it a favourite among the global nomad crowd. I loved the sketch books and reflection cards in this cute cafe, encouraging patrons to express themselves or have a moment of quiet reflection over their morning brew before heading out to explore. The area around Mazari Villas is home to some of Bali’s best dining spots, offering everything from casual cafes to luxe dining experiences. The proximity to Bingin Beach and Uluwatu’s main drag meant that we could easily grab a scooter or arrange a quick ride for a night out.
For a full day of relaxation, Sundays Beach Club is the perfect option. Just 20 minutes from the villas, it features a stunning beachfront location that offers a range of activities, from swimming and reading a book under a private cabana, to enjoying a cocktail and snack by the water. Walk-ins are welcome but Sundays also offer a VIP pack with towels, welcome hamper and a food and beverage credit for your day.
Sunset at Sundays is magic with a saxophone performance and beach bonfires shifting the venue into nightlife mode. The Balinese gods thankfully got us to the airport on time, and we cheekily boarded our flight.

ADOG doesn't care if you're rich or poor...give him your heart and he'll give you his.
The tearjerker Marley and Me is a film all about the emotions involved in being a pet owner.
And it is this emotional bond that proves very difficult when pet ownership has to be determined in the event a couple splits.
Mathew Nott, principal of Parramatta based Nott and Co Lawyers, has appeared in the seminal dog case in Australia in which the ownership of Harold the dog was contested.
“Couples start to build a life together and buy a dog and the dog becomes like a family member to them,” Mr Nott said.
“If things go sour, there is always a debate about who keeps the dog and this issue often ends up being litigated in court as part of a broader legal settlement.
“These court cases can rack up tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees.
“There are some amendments to the law coming which will see pets treated differently if there is a break-up and this is a good thing”
The legal battle often becomes bitter as pet owners do not understand the legal fact that dogs, according to Australian law, are currently treated as property, just like a can of baked beans.
The Family Law Act does not provide clear guidance on determining ownerhsip of the
pet in the event of a separation.
In 2024, a new bill was introduced into the NSW Parliament and it may provide assistance through its proposed amendments.
The Family Law Amendment Bill 2024 defines pets as companions animals, not property, and will empower courts to give ownership of
the pet to one party after considering factors such as:
1. Any history of family violence.
2. Who has cared for the animal.
3. Any history of cruelty to the pet.
4. The relationship of any children with the pet.
Courts will not assign joint custody of a pet, to prevent
ongoing and further disputes.
If the pet came into a relationship owned by one of the parties, this will be persuasive. The bill is not yet law.
Pet custody can be set out in consent orders, prenuptial, postnuptial, or de facto financial agreements with your
partner.
Arrangements for the custody of pets can also be made verbally but it is better to have a written agreement of some form which can be relied upon.
