WESTERN Sydney bus driver known for his professionalism, safe driving and outstanding customer service has been named the 2026 BusNSW Bus & Coach Driver of the Year.

Tom Lee, from Transit Systems NSW's Smithfield Depot, received the prestigious honour at the 2026 BusNSW Awards, which recognise the state's top bus and coach drivers for their contribution to the transport industry and the communities they serve.

Tom has been with Transit Systems NSW since 2013 and has earned a reputation as one of the company's most dependable and respected drivers. Over more than 13 years behind the wheel, he has maintained an impeccable safety record while consistently delivering exceptional customer service.

"I just try to do my job properly and look after the people on my bus," Tom said.

"It means a lot that customers notice, and it means even more to win this award."

His driving performance is consistently ranked among the best at the Smithfield Depot using the GreenRoad safety platform, which measures key driving behaviours including braking, acceleration, cornering and speed management.

Transit Systems NSW Managing Director Rino Matarazzo said Tom exemplifies the qualities the company values most.

"Tom represents everything we look for in a Transit Systems NSW driver. He's safe, skilled, dependable, and genuinely connected to the community he serves," Mr Matarazzo said.

Airport cargo trial flights start CEO Simon Hickey and right the frist flight.

ESTERN Sydney International Airport’s (WSI) Cargo Precinct trial flights have commenced.

The first freighter touched down ahead of the hub’s formal opening and inaugural commercial services later this month.

WSI CEO Simon Hickey said these trial flights marked the final stages of the airport’s operational readiness program as it prepares for the opening of its 24-hour, state-of-the-art cargo hub.

“Today we’ll welcome a Qantas A321 freighter to WSI as we continue to ramp up operational preparations and really bring this airport to life,” he said.

“These trials are an integral part of

and innovations to deliver a highly efficient, sustainable, and future-proofed Cargo Precinct. Our trials present an excellent opportunity to test these capabilities,” he said.

“I also want to acknowledge the huge amount of cooperation and coordination across WSI, together with our colleagues at Air Services Australia and our trusted Cargo Precinct partners to deliver this trial program. We look forward to welcoming our first commercial services later this month.”

Acting Minister for Transport Kristy McBain welcomed Qantas Freight’s first trial flight to the new airport.

“This is the largest plane to land at Western Sydney International Airport so far, as we get ready to open for freight services,” she said.

“The new airport will connect Western Sydney to the world, allowing us to move produce and goods from every corner of the state to new markets across the globe.”

Bradfield City, Aerotropolis projects

ESTERN Sydney's transformation into a leading centre for advanced manufacturing and technology has taken another major step forward.

Construction has started on a new high-tech building at Bradfield City and planning approval granted for a landmark $1B industrial estate in the Western Sydney Aerotropolis.

The NSW Government says the projects will accelerate the development of Australia's first new city in more than a century while creating thousands of skilled jobs and strengthening sovereign manufacturing capability.

Construction has started on Bradfield City's Second Building, a purpose-built 7,000-square-metre facility that will house Australia's first commercial Semiconductor Advanced Packaging Facility.

The centre will provide Australian businesses with access to advanced semiconductor packaging, micro-electronics and precision manufacturing technology, allowing locally developed innovations to be commercialised onshore rather than overseas.

The facility will feature ISO 5 cleanroom laboratories, advanced microscopy and specialised electronics capabilities to support industries including quantum computing, photonics, communications, sensing and medical technology.

The building will also include a second Advanced Manufacturing Readiness Facility (AMRF) production hall, expanding the capabilities of the first AMRF that opened last year, along with commercial office and collaboration spaces for innovative businesses.

Delivered by Hansen Yuncken, the project forms part of a $300M NSW Government investment

designed to establish Bradfield City as a globally competitive innovation precinct.

The government expects the precinct to attract businesses in advanced manufacturing, aerospace, defence, robotics, education, cleantech and modern construction, creating high-value employment opportunities close to home for Western Sydney residents.

Meanwhile, the Aerotropolis has secured another major investment with approval of Burrah Park, a $1B industrial estate jointly owned by UniSuper and IFM Investors.

The project is the largest industrial development approved in the Aerotropolis to date and is expected to support more than 6,300 permanent jobs by its completion in 2032.

The development has already attracted interest from DHL Supply Chain Australia, which plans to establish a major 24-hour warehouse and distribution centre within the estate.

Burrah Park will combine freight, logistics, advanced manufacturing and high-technology industries with sustainable design features, smart technology and 26 hectares of parklands for conservation and recreation. Approval includes the estate's overall concept as well as its first stage, comprising three logistics centres and major infrastructure works, including upgrades to Elizabeth Drive.

Palliative care support changes welcomed

GEING Australia and Palliative Care Australia have welcomed a Senate committee recommendation to remove funding and time limits from the Support at Home End-of-Life Pathway. The organisations say end-of-life care

should be based on a person's clinical needs rather than predictions about life expectancy, allowing more older Australians to remain at home with appropriate support. They argue the current system disadvantages people with dementia, frailty

and other progressive illnesses, while increasing hospital admissions. The sector will present a new clinically guided, needs-based model to the Senate inquiry into the Support at Home program later this month.

Jim's Group offers free franchises

IM'S Group founder Jim Penman has launched a rescue package for 7-Eleven franchisees affected by the retailer's growing controversy, offering them a free Jim's Group franchise to help rebuild their businesses.

Under the scheme, any 7-Eleven franchisee unfairly impacted by the actions of 7-Eleven Australia and its owner, 7-Eleven International, will be given a Jim's Group franchise at no cost.

Jim's Group will cover franchise fees and establishment costs. Franchisees would only need to supply their own tools, equipment and vehicle where required, and could choose from more than 50 Jim's divisions - from lawn mowing to dog washing, or create a new division if none suited them.

Penman said he can't stand by and watch hardworking Australians lose everything after investing hundreds of thousands, sometimes millions, of dollars into franchises they believed would secure their financial future.

He said franchisees would receive Jim's systems, training and ongoing support to start again.

The Jim's Group founder was critical of government inaction, accusing authorities of collecting taxes from franchisees, including GST, company tax, payroll tax and capital gains tax, while failing to protect them when their businesses collapse.

He said the current Franchising Code protects paperwork better than it protects people, despite numerous inquiries and reviews into the sector.

Penman emphasised the human cost of franchise failures, noting that affected owners are often families who have mortgaged homes and emptied superannuation savings in pursuit of a better future.

To address systemic issues, Penman proposed an independent annual Australian Franchisee Feedback Survey and a public National Franchise Transparency Register, allowing prospective franchisees to review brands before investing, comparing it to being able to read hotel reviews before booking a room.

He suggested the register be funded through a "transparency levy" paid by franchisors themselves, arguing reputable operators have nothing to fear while poor performers would be forced to improve or exit the market.

He urged any affected 7-Eleven franchisees to contact Jim's Group directly, saying the company could not undo what had happened but could help people start again.

More than 6,000 free trips clocked up

ORE than 6,000 free trips have now been taken on NSW TrainLink’s free coach shuttle services across the Blue Mountains, helping communities navigate ongoing disruption while work continues to restore the road at Victo-

More beds and operating theatres

ESTERN Sydney residents are set to benefit from expanded healthcare services, with construction of 30 additional beds at Blacktown Hospital progressing well and on track for completion later this year, 12 months ahead of schedule.

The project includes two new operating theatres, expected to be completed in 2027, boosting surgical capacity and helping reduce pressure on existing services.

The Blacktown upgrade forms part of the NSW Government's $120M investment to deliver 60 additional beds across Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals.

Construction at Mount Druitt Hospital is expected to begin in the coming months after FDC Construction (NSW) Pty Ltd was appointed to deliver 30 new beds, with completion scheduled for late 2027.

The additional capacity is designed to improve patient flow, strengthen emergency care and support

hospital staff as demand for healthcare continues to grow across Western Sydney.

The investment is part of the NSW Government's broader commitment to deliver 2,500 additional hospital beds and treatment spaces across the state.

Other Western Sydney projects include 18 additional specialty beds at Westmead Hospital through a $38M investment, supporting respiratory, cardiology and emergency short-stay services.

The hospital expansion also sits within the Government's $11.9Bhealth infrastructure program, which will deliver 32 new or upgraded hospitals over four years. Major projects include the $910 million Rouse Hill Hospital, $2B Bankstown Hospital redevelopment, $630 million Fairfield Hospital redevelopment, and the $400M Canterbury Hospital redevelopment.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Western Sydney Prue Car said the investment was helping address the healthcare needs of the region's rapidly growing population.

"We're getting on with the job of delivering better hospital infrastructure so local families can continue accessing the care they need, close to home," she said.

Health Minister Ryan Park said the additional beds would improve patient flow and relieve pressure on busy hospital services.

"More beds, more services, more staff in our hospitals. That's exactly what Western Sydney needs and exactly what we're delivering," he said.

Member for Blacktown Stephen Bali welcomed the progress, saying the additional beds would benefit both patients and hospital staff, while Member for Mount Druitt Edmond Atalla said the project represented a significant investment in improving healthcare across the region.

Once complete, the additional beds and operating theatres will help meet growing demand for health services while improving access to timely care for communities across Blacktown, Mount Druitt and the wider Western Sydney region.

Monty Python's Spamalot in town

HE Tony Award-winning musical Monty Python's Spamalot is set to bring its trademark blend of comedy, music and mayhem to Australian audiences in Western Sydney with a limited Sydney season at The Coliseum, Rooty Hill, expected to be one of the highlights of the production's national tour.

Following a successful season in Perth earlier this year, producer Drew Anthony has confirmed the acclaimed musical will travel to Melbourne and Sydney during September and October, marking the show's long-awaited return to Australian stages.

While the production will first play Melbourne's Athenaeum Theatre from 16 September to 11 October before a short run at the Sydney Event Centre from 15 to 18 October, Western Sydney audiences will have the opportunity to experience the spectacle at The Coliseum Theatre, Rooty Hill, from 22 to 25 October.

UGBY clubs and councils in the Mount Druitt electorate are encouraged to apply for grants of $5,000 to $150,000 under Round 2 of the NSW Government's Rugby World Cup Legacy Program. Up to $2.15M is available this round as part

10 Newsbytes Grants open for community groups

USTRALIA Post is inviting eligible not-for-profit organisations across New South Wales to apply for Community Grants of up to $10,000 to support locally led projects that strengthen social connection and improve mental health and wellbeing.

An additional $250,000 has been set aside for disaster-impacted communities. Since 2019, more than 530 grants have been awarded nationwide. Applications close at 11.59pm (AEST) on Monday, 6 July 2026, with successful applicants announced in September.

She launched the Australian support website www.raredementia.com.au, developed by HammondCare, to provide information and support for families living with rare dementias. The initiative also aims to raise awareness that dementia includes many conditions beyond Alzheimer’s disease, including FTD, which affects behaviour, personality and language rather than memory in its early stages.

HE Australian Medical Association is calling for urgent reforms and increased funding to improve healthcare for Australians living in residential aged care. The AMA says funding shortfalls, regulatory barriers and poor digital integration are preventing GPs from providing regular care, leading to avoidable hospital admissions and poorer health outcomes.

AMA President Danielle McMullen said a GP-led collaborative model, better funding, stronger digital systems and improved workforce support are needed to ensure aged care residents receive timely, coordinated healthcare.

Invigorating walks, delightful dining

ATCH the Parramatta River Ferry (F3) from Parramatta Wharf to Circular Quay, a scenic journey of approximately 1 hour and 25 minutes. At Circular Quay, transfer to the Manly Ferry from Wharf 2 or 3 for the 20–30 minutecrossing to Manly Wharf.

Services operate regularly throughout the day, and the total journey takes around two hours, depending on your connection. Use an Opal card or contactless credit/debit card to tap on and off for both ferry services, making it a simple, car-free way to reach Manly.

The Gopher Brings Old-World Glamour To Manly. Jo and Ro tell us about the transformed iconic late night venue from Old Manly Boatshed site to the Gopher.

There is something delicious about walking down a dark timber staircase and not being entirely sure what you are about to find.

We left the lights of Manly Corso behind, descended past dark brown timber panelling and arrived in a room that felt like a friendly gentleman’s club with a pint of Guinness in hand and margaritas to boot.

Heavy exposed iron beams run across the ceiling. Inviting leather bench seats. Wool flannel stool covers and dark carpet alongside timber floors. The fit-out is old-world cigar-bar feel, it is warm and full of character.

At 6pm on a Friday night, the room was lively, a few football fans still enjoying themselves. Bob Marley playing in the background. Classic margarita in hand.

A couple of hours later, the crowd

transitions into a good mix of ages, locals, groups, couples and people settling in for the evening.

The atmosphere is one of The Gopher’s strongest cards. It has energy without feeling chaotic. The acoustic solo session on stage leans into classics.

Think U2, INXS, Elton John. The kind

of soundtrack that keeps the room humming. Some of the crowd swayed.

Most didn’t miss a belted-out version of Blister in the Sun. Thanks to a lovely maître d’ whose watchful eye scanned the room constantly, we were served some of the menu’s favourite dishes and after a couple of rounds of food, our bellies were elegantly full.

There was a Snowy Mountain trout dip with crisp bread that was an instant hit to a hungry mouth: smoky, salty, moreish and exactly the sort of thing you want in the middle of a table.

The spicy sausage roll was a standout - a little curry warmth running through it and pepper seeds scattered over the top. Rich, comforting and unapologetically tasty.

An Irish favourite, scotched egg in deep fried bread, fisherman’s pie with mash that felt properly hearty and the dish that lingered, the slow-cooked lamb medallions on mash. It fell apart on the fork and again in the mouth, soft, generous and deeply satisfying.

The Gopher is not trying to be a polished fine-diner or another airy coastal venue. Its appeal is in the descent, the darkness, the leather, the noise, the nostalgia and the feeling that you have stumbled into somewhere with a bit of pulse. We left with full bellies, music ringing in our ears, and the sense that Manly has gained something it needed, a lively late-night room with grit, charm and proper personality.

The Gopher is known for its live music program, with performances on most evenings and later sessions on Fridays and Saturdays. So if you're planning a weekend visit from Parramatta, it's an ideal stop for dinner and drinks before catching an evening ferry back to Circular Quay (and then a train to Parramatta if you're staying later than the last Parramatta River ferry).

While it can get busy, there is room for all. When you reach Shelly Beach, climb the headland for a beautiful lookout across the Northern Beaches, or settle in for coffee by the water. It is stunning at sunrise, golden in the afternoon and always full of life. Catch the Manly ferry from Circular Quay and make it a perfect half-day coastal escape. This is a

wheelchair friendly walk.

The Spit to Manly Walk. Beginning beneath Spit Bridge, this iconic 10km harbour walk winds through bushland, secluded beaches and Sydney Harbour National Park before finishing at vibrant Manly Wharf. Along the way you'll discover Aboriginal rock engravings, tranquil coves, native wildlife and spectacular harbour lookouts, with plenty of opportunities to stop for a swim or picnic. Allow around three to four hours to complete the walk at a relaxed pace, making it one of Sydney's most rewarding coastal experiences.

It follows natural and manmade stairs and hills and is not wheelchair friendly.

Manly to Freshwater Beach Walk Starting at Manly Surf Club, this 2km coastal walk follows the oceanfront north along Manly Beach before continuing to Freshwater Beach, where Australian surfing history began. The paved pathway offers uninterrupted ocean views, ocean pools, cafés and grassy picnic spots, making it ideal for families, casual walkers and anyone wanting a shorter seaside escape. Allow around 30-40 minutes one way, with plenty of opportunities to stop for a coffee, swim or simply soak up the relaxed Northern Beaches atmosphere.

Please note the Manly to Freshwater section of the walk is uphill and follows paved stairs. It is not good for wheelchair access.

One of the first things we noticed from our room on the ninth floor was the outlook towards the waterfront and nearby Polytec Stadium. Wrap-around windows and a private balcony provided a unique perspective of Gosford.

The room itself felt warm and inviting, with modern furnishings, a comfortable king-sized bed and contemporary bathroom. A stylish tea and coffee station and calming colour palette created a space that was easy to settle in.

Before checking out, we spent time at the fifthfloor pool, heated to 23 degrees and overlooking the Gosford waterfront. With in-pool seating, a beachstyle entry and plenty of lounge chairs, it’s an inviting space to unwind. The fifth floor is also home to the hotel’s gym and sauna.

Rooftop Dining at Astra Just before sunset, we made our way to Astra on the 28th floor. The Japanese-inspired rooftop venue is one of the hotel’s standout features, with floor-toceiling windows overlooking Brisbane Water and the surrounding coastline.

Among the highlights from the menu was the Ora King Salmon, while the Fleur De Lotus was a standout from the signature cocktail list. For something a little different, The Gulf of Brisbane — Astra’s vibrant blue take on a margarita—pays tribute to the region and was as visually striking as it was enjoyable to drink.

The verdict di Paolo cocktail and a bottle of Riff Ramato Pinot Grigio from Italy’s Venezie region.

We started with Mushroom Arancini before moving on to Squid Ink Fettuccine with king prawns and Pappardelle with slow-cooked Wagyu brisket, porcini ragu and gremolata.

THOUGHT Bondi had no surprises left for me. I’m a Sydneysider, I’ve visited Bondi many times in my life and did a 6 month stint living in Bondi's backstreets back in my twenties.

Staying at Adina Bondi confirmed to me that you can think you know a place, but you can get to know it differently. Tucked discreetly among locals’ haunts in Hall Street, think yoga studios, surf art, and cozy eateries, this was Bondi through a resident’s lens. Adina’s pastel exterior gave way to a warm, timber-toned foyer, with a lap pool and jacuzzi beyond and a lovely garden, ready to laze the afternoon away. The two bedroom suite for my family felt like a home for beach-dwellers and I was bummed I wasn’t throwing a barbecue out on the roomy verandah, because it was ripe for it with the space, the outdoor table and the settee and cushions. The bedrooms are delightful with modern ensuites, living up to Adina’s vision for

stylish relaxed living.

A holiday at Bondi deserves a week, the closest holiday style I've experienced is previous trips to Noosa, in that you could duck and weave into dozens of little boutiques, grab an ice cream, browse for books or jump on a bicycle. This is without even hitting the

iconic main strip facing the ocean.

We enjoyed Sicilian fare for dinner, but the dining choices are endless. Dotted in this local area are local bars full of residents socialising, swapping stories and making life plans.

In the morning, we donned running shoes with our daughter and ran to Tamarama and back, stopping constantly to point out dolphins and take photos of the ocean, moody and beautiful.

Breakfast called for a full Aussie breakfast at Bills, with fresh orange juices and coffees. An unhurried casual breakfast, post-exercise is one of life’s finest pleasures.

Had we known the blueberry pancakes had a reputation of their own, we would have tried them, but we already promised ourselves to return to Bondi again, so Blueberries it will be.

MT BULLER IS CHEAPER THAN MANY

Overseas snow holiday options

I

F you’ve dreamed of escaping to the alps for fresh snow, indulgent hot chocolate and the tinkle of sleigh bells on huskies – the good news is you can experience all of this with a one hour flight to Melbourne and a beautiful 3-hour drive through wine country.

Mt Buller is the most accessible alpine resort in Australia, and you don’t need a visa or jetlag to feel like you’ve had an international holiday.

There are also some savvy ways to get a mountain of value from your snow dollar – with a little planning and know-how.

Embrace off-peak. The snow season starts in June and stretches into early October, so look for deals in early winter and savings in Spring – which also has the added bonus of longer and sunnier days. Hello Aperol spritz on the balcony and getting a goggle tan!

Don’t forget mid-week which is consistently less busy and when you can find accommodation and lift passes significantly less expensive than weekends. At Mt Buller many accommodation venues offer Kids Stay Free deals in June and September.

Go online, and get in early. Like everything nowadays, it pays to plan ahead to snap up lift passes, accommodation and lock in lessons before you travel. Mt Buller has skiing for adults available from just $121 and kids (that’s all the way up to 18 years old at Mt Buller) can ski from just $73 a day.

Getting there. Mt Buller is a 3-hour easy drive from Melbourne and if you’d rather skip the driving there are even coach connections direct from the airport to the slopes. Travelling with friends? Jump in a minivan and car-pool to keep the fuel down and give you someone to play ‘I Spy’ with on the drive up.

Ways to stay. Mt Buller has over 8,000 beds all right up in a pretty alpine village. Most are just a short stroll to the ski slopes and the accessible village has free shuttle buses rolling around to make getting to and fro easy on sometimes weary ski legs!

You’ll find something for different budgets with luxe apartments, cosy hotels and affordable lodge accommodation options with shared facilities and usually a games room for the kids.

Australian skiing was built on the lodge culture which is still going strong – there is something great about sharing a huge pot of spaghetti around a long table, open fires and wild rounds of Uno before piling into bunk beds.

Nights to remember. One of the magic parts of winter on Mt Buller are the Twilight sessionsv when dress ups

and glow sticks are encouraged and you can slide on Bourke Street run into the village from 5 – 8.30pm on Wednesday and Saturday nights in July and August for just $37.

All the other things. Skiing and snowboarding is just part of a snow holiday so you’ll want to make time to fit in all the other activities on offer. Catch a movie at the cinema (yes, they have a popcorn machine), meet the huskies and go on a sled dog ride, bounce in the AirZone and scramble up the indoor climbing walls, book in a spa day at Breathtaker on High, look out for winter Olympians training in the resort, book in your own professional photo shoot, hit the shops with everything from ski stuff, fashion, souvenirs, art and even a fully stocked supermarket and discover the adventure of a snowshoe tour to catch the sunrise.

Eat a mountain of delicious food. Mt Buller has around 30+ places to warm up and savour delicious winter fare. You’ll be ready for a piping hot pasta, a crisp schnitzel or a mouthwatering degustation menu at one of the fine dining spots

after a day on the slopes. There are also great spots on and off the slopes for long lunches and a drink with a (seriously stunning) view.

Other tips. if you are not a regular snow traveller ask around and borrow some gear from friends for the first trip

and then buy if you get the bug. Borrow outerwear for your little ones, they’ll be out of it next year. Marketplace is your friend for finding bargains and support your local shops who often have great gear on sale.

BLACKTOWN’S WARRICK THEATRE

A

FTER the fire which destroyed the Rivoli Theatre in 1946, when the Payne family was finally were given consent to build a new theatre, they did Blacktown proud.

The Warrick rose on the opposite side of the laneway to the Rivoli site, a modern, large single level cinema of some 700 seats.

It opened on 30 March 1949 with Susan Hayward in Tap Roots, an American Civil War drama in the vein of Gone With The Wind.

Alan Payne, son of Albert and Edith Payne, later commented that local audiences were so keen to have a theatre back, they would not have cared which film he put on.

Architects for the new theatre were Buckland and Druce (who had also designed the Astra Theatre at Parramatta) and the builders were C H Webb and Sons. Brakell’s supplied the curtains and carpets and the theatre was equipped with RCA Photophone equipment.

Although not on the scale of the big city theatres, it was a very well equipped, well run and comfortable theatre. And it quickly became a Blacktown institution.

On Saturday nights it was not unusual to see a convoy of buses and taxis lined up waiting to take patrons home, and dozens of bicycles parked on the footpath as well.

Seats could be booked permanently.

The Warrick’s halcyon days were certainly the 1950s. Even with the threat of television on the horizon, the theatre’s attendances continued to grow, as did the post war population of Blacktown and its district.

The theatre had two major achievements in that time: in 1955 it was equipped with widescreen CinemaScope, which was two and a half times wider than the conventional Academy

ratio screen. The first feature screened was The Robe, to a packed house.

CinemaScope was introduced by 20th Century-Fox, premiering in Australia at Hoyts Regent Theatre in Sydney in December 1953 where it ran for nine months.

Audiences were stunned by its width and the use of stereophonic sound to enhance the wider image.

It was a technological marvel, and Fox’s first production, The Robe, was quickly followed by a series of visual blockbuster films that kept audiences packing theatres: How To Marry A Millionaire, Soldier of Fortune, River of No Return, The Egyptian, There’s No Business Like Show Business, Peyton Place, Island in the Sun, King of the Khyber Rifles, and many more.

Other studios quickly jumped on the bandwagon and major films such as 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea, The High and the Mighty, and Knights of the Round

Table were also filmed in CinemaScope.

5 All of these major films were shown at the Warrick.

The second major achievement was in 1957 when the Payne Family decided to take a huge gamble in increasing the capacity of the Warrick.

A dress circle was added by raising the roof hydraulically, and then bricking the walls up higher. In addition, new toilets were installed and a lounge foyer space erected alongside the theatre, parallel to the lane. The proscenium was also modified to improve sightlines.

During this work, the theatre never closed, even though parts of the auditorium had scaffolding along the side walls.

The roof was raised 3.5 metres and a huge steel beam installed to support the new dress circle – a remarkable engineering feat. The façade facing Main Street was heightened so that the theatre now dominated the shops around it.

Around this time a large billboard was erected on the side wall of the theatre, in order to be able to advertise major coming attractions. This was known in the industry as a 24 sheeter.

The Warrick screened all the major hits of the day, including The Ten Commandments, Spartacus, Ben-Hur, Quo Vadis, Oklahoma, The King and I, Ivanhoe, Carousel, Sink the Bismarck and many, many more.

It also introduced a policy of screen-

ing continental films on one night of the week, and sometimes even operatic films, to appeal to a broader ethnic community which was now increasingly a part of Blacktown due to post war immigration.

The Warrick changed its programmes three times weekly.

There was always a variety of choice to appeal to everyone.

Thursday was a special ladies’ shoppers’ matinee, while Saturday had three sessions, the first being a special matinee for children.

School holidays saw additional matinees. There were Ranch Nights and Fright Nights.

To walk home in the dark [there were few street lights in those days] after watching a Frankenstein/Dracula double feature was nerve-wracking, let alone having watched Gorgo the sea monster trash London, or the giant Tarantula eat people.

There were also retro screenings of past favourites. With television yet to arrive, the Warrick was the entertainment hub for the people of Blacktown.

Saturday matinees were popular with local children. Imagine a theatre full of around 1000 screaming kids of all ages and sizes. The appearance of a colour cartoon brought more screams

and foot stamping, as did the weekly serial. However, bad behaviour was not tolerated and miscreants were quickly removed. One of the usherettes had a fearsome reputation when it came to picking out the troublemakers in the dark and marching them outside.

Interval was further pandemonium as all those children headed for the toilets or the candy bar in a chattering human wave. The sight of so many noisy children at the long candy bar purchasing their sweets at interval was not easily forgotten, nor at the busy fish and chip shop adjacent, which also did a roaring trade.

The new dress circle is complete, and the Warrick is twice its original height. The outline of the original theatre can be seen on the façade as the paintwork is not yet complete.

In 1959 an unusual promotion took place when a free movie policy was introduced for a week. Local shopkeepers would give tickets away, depending on the amount of purchases made, to these free daily film screenings.

The 1960s saw attendances falling due to television. A developer had taken an option on purchasing the theatre in 1962.

In December 1963, the new drive-in theatre opened, which immediately further eroded the Warrick’s audiences. The Warrick closed in March, 1964, with the film Charade, and, appropriately, The Final Hour.

It seemed strange to patrons attending the final screenings that this fine theatre, only 15-years-old, was going to be demolished.

It took several weeks to get the theatre down. The nondescript Blacktown Mall building was erected on the site, a poor visually decrepit substitute for what had been a Blacktown landmark, and one of the city’s most loved buildings. At least one local remarked “they pulled down our theatre for that?”

The Warrick’s roof trusses were re-used to build Rowe’s bus depot on the corner of Richmond and Rooty Hill Roads but this itself was later demolished.

It would be many years before Blacktown got another cinema, the Village Twin, and later, the Hoyts 10 muiltiplex.

The Death of Robin Hood - REVIEW JACOB RICHARDSON

OODY, compelling and absolutely gorgeous to watch (and pretty brutal in equal measure), Sarnoski has crafted a deeply absorbing film that needs to be seen on the big screen.

Robin Hood (Hugh Jackman) is grappling with the inner scars of his past life - the scars of crime, murder and more. But when he agrees to help Little John (Bill Skarsgard) rescue his daughter, he winds up gravely injured in a battle he thought would be his last.

While much of him longed for that glorious death in battle, he instead finds himself in the hands of Sister Brigid (Jodie Comer) who nurses him back to health, and perhaps gives him another chance at finding a death befitting the great Robin Hood.

Michael Sarnoski’s The Death of Robin Hood isn’t going to be for everyone. It’s a subtle, sometimes wordless piece, that dives in on the visuals and introspection more so than the blood, guts and swashbuckling gore of legend.

But it’s all the better for it.

The film opens on a desolate scene.

A young woman, traipsing across an inhospitable landscape, in search of a man who murdered her kin.

Around the only fire for miles, she

and Robin have a double meaning laden back and forth, and it leads to a brutal murder.

The screen itself seems cold with the depiction of the frosty landscape; the music slim but pulsating. I t’s a perfect encapsulation of everything this movie is. It doesn’t take the time to baby you through the brutality of its action, or the inner monologue of its lead character. It shows you what

it can, what it wants to, and lets you figure out the rest.

Across the board, the cast is nothing short of spectacular. Bill Skarsgard is unrecognizable as Little John. Jodie Comer plays a saintly healer with a broken heart with nuance and humanity that never leaves her even in anger.

Murray Bartlett brings a wealth of pain, understanding and hope to his performance as a Leper - even with

only his eyes visible. But they all pale in comparison to Hugh Jackman, who has never been better.

The incomparable lined face of the man reveals deep wells of thought and emotion, alongside the occasional flick of his eyes, that do more to make this story work than any additional dialogue ever could.

But that’s not to say this is a soft film. This is a lot more brutal than you might be expecting. The action in the first half of this film is completely devastating; Sarnoski doesn’t shy away from what an actual fight to the death looks like.

And it will have you wincing and wanting more in equal measure. And its visual aplomb is matched by the incredible cinematography, and the gorgeous costume and set design.

Ultimately, the film ends with a whimper more than bang, but in that way it perfectly mirrors Robin’s own journey. Complex, nuanced, heart pumping and breaking in equal measure, this is a feast for the eyes and soul.

The Death of Robin Hood won’t be for everybody. But if you’re a fan of this sort of introspective period piece with stunning cinematography and a compelling lead performance, give it a chance in the dark of a cinema where it can envelope you as it should.

HIS year marks a huge milestone for the Australian Ladies in Business Initiative.

Not only are we celebrating five years of the ALIBI Awards, but for the very first time, we are taking our Awards Night regional, with Orange, NSW hosting this year’s event.

What’s your business really worth?

SK 10 business owners what their business is worth and you will get ten confident answers. Ask a buyer, and you will usually get a very different number. That gap is where most sale conversations begin.

A business is not worth what you have put into it, or what you need to fund your retirement. It is worth what a willing buyer will pay for the future profit it can reasonably be expected to produce. That shift, from effort and need to future return, is where a realistic valuation starts.

The most common mistake is valuing on turnover. Revenue is vanity.

A business turning over three million but barely breaking even is worth far

less than one turning over one million with strong margins. Buyers are buying profit, so profit is what gets valued, and not the figure on your tax return.

A valuation uses normalised earnings, the true profit a new owner would enjoy once the books are cleaned up.

That means adding back an above-market owner’s salary, the car run through the business and one-off costs, while stripping out any income that leaves when you do.

A multiple is then applied to those earnings. A business earning two hundred thousand dollars in adjusted profit might sell for 1.5 times, or as much as

3.5 times.

That is the difference between three hundred thousand dollars and seven hundred thousand, and it is driven almost entirely by risk.

Recurring revenue, the spread of customers, documented systems and a capable team all lift the multiple. The biggest factor is owner dependence. If you are the business, if you hold the relationships and make every decision, a buyer sees risk, and risk pulls the price down.

One trap is worth naming. Many owners research their value by searching for similar businesses listed online

and noting the asking prices.

It feels like sensible homework, but an asking price is only what a seller hopes to get. It is not the value, and it is not what the business will sell for.

Plenty of businesses are listed at four or five times earnings and are still on the market a year later. Listed is not sold, and sold is not the same as value.

The best time to find out what your business is worth is not the day you decide to sell. It is two or three years earlier.

A proper appraisal does more than give you a figure. It shows you which levers to pull to lift it, whether that is reducing owner dependence, tightening margins or locking in recurring revenue. Owners who get valued early, and act on the advice, routinely sell for more than those who wait.

If you have never had your business professionally appraised, that is the place to start. You might be pleasantly surprised, or you might get a reality check. Either way, you will finally know your real number.

F your business runs on tight cashflow, July will test it harder than any month in recent memory.

Payday super went live on 1 July.

Super is now due every time you run payroll, landing in your employees' fund within seven business days, and there's no transition period.

Here's the part catching people out: if you were paying super quarterly and timing it to the deadline, your June quarter super is still due by 28 July under the old rules.

So this month you're paying both, close to double the usual super outlay.

The June quarter BAS is due 28 July as well.

And from 1 July, the general interest charge on unpaid tax debt rose to 11.43% per annum, compounding daily. It stopped being tax deductible a year ago. On a $100,000 debt, that's roughly $12,000 a year with nothing to claim back.

I know what happens next, because we're already seeing it. A business hits a month like this and someone quietly does triage. Wages get paid. Super gets paid, because the ATO now sees it through payroll reporting almost as it happens. And the BAS slides. Just this once.

I understand the logic. For a long time it genuinely made sense, and plenty of businesses used it deliberately, often with their accountant's blessing. The ATO was the slowest creditor to chase and the interest was deductible, so the tax account became the informal overdraft of Australian small business.

That era is over, and it's worth being fair about why. Collectable debt across the tax system sits at $54.6 billion at the last official count, around twothirds of it owed by small business.

The ATO has been open that pulling that figure down is the priority, and every change of the past two years serves that one goal: stopping debt building up unseen. In the long run, most businesses will be better for it, with no quarter-end shocks, cleaner books and no ugly surprise when you refinance or sell.

But right now we're in the transition, and transitions are hardest on businesses that entered them already

stretched.

You can see the strain in the numbers: complaints to the Tax Ombudsman jumped 127% this financial year, mostly about debt collection, penalties and interest. The long-term benefit doesn't pay this month's bills.

Meanwhile, the practical reality is that the ATO now moves like a commercial creditor. Follow-up that once took months arrives in weeks, Director Penalty Notices are issued earlier, and

once one lands, the company's debt can become yours personally.

Letting the BAS slide in July means borrowing at the worst rate available, from the creditor most likely to escalate.

So what should you do if July's numbers genuinely don't work?

Treat it as a negotiation. The ATO still does deals with businesses that come early with a credible position, and a properly negotiated payment plan built around your actual cash cycle can run as long as three years.

Timing matters most: get in before a payment is missed, not after, because that's when there's real room to move.

In many of the tax debt positions we see, interest and penalties make up 20 to 70% of the total owing, and that portion can often be wound back where the case supports it.

And don't go it alone. The moment tax debt enters the conversation is the moment to talk to someone who deals with the ATO every day. That first conversation often costs nothing.

Most specialists, ours included, will talk through your position obligation free, and having it early can change how the next six months go.

What catches too many good businesses is assuming the stakes are lower than they are while the consequences quietly stack: a missed payment becomes a default, a default becomes a notice, a notice becomes a personal liability. That snowball rolls over thousands of businesses every year.

Don't let yours be one of them.

Deal with it while it's still a cashflow problem.
