Age Demographic
Article in the Financial Review March 26, 2024
New research shows the Western Sydney economy is outperforming other parts of Sydney, as consumers adjust their spending to heightened cost-of-living pressures and choose to spend their money close to home, according to the latest data from Westpac DataX.
The research shows Western Sydney is thriving on numerous measures, including discretionary spending, the strength of the nighttime economy and rising customer and visitor numbers. Westpac DataX figures show that people in the 45-plus category are leading the charge when it comes to spending on dining out and on beverages, as they tend to be in a better financial position and having more disposable income than younger people.
The popularity of blockbuster concerts and sporting fixtures also supports Western Sydney’s success. In 2024 alone, hundreds of thousands of people have streamed into Olympic Park, a centrepiece of Sydney’s west with its boulevard of stadiums. Highlights so far this year include concerts by Taylor Swift, Pink, and the start of the football season.
“These events bring people from all over the country into NSW, which has positive spin-off effects across Western Sydney,” says Wood.
Connections reap rewards
Western Sydney’s growth is happening at the same time as massive infrastructure projects are under way that will cement the area as one of the nation’s key transport hubs, anchored by the new Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport.
Projects such as the extension of Sydney’s light rail to Parramatta and the new WestConnex motorway are revitalising the region.
“There’s a cultural dimension to the data as well. Lunar New Year, Ramadan and Diwali are all focal points for the area, and events which also help to support the nighttime economy,” says Luci Ellis, chief economist, Westpac Group.
The shifting demographics of Sydney’s west are good news for both large and small businesses looking to expand. Geography, housing supply constraints, affordability pressures and increased work flexibility mean Sydney’s population is gravitating to the west. With local economies already thriving, there clearly looks to be longer term development opportunities in the area, says Ellis.
“We are used to thinking of Sydney as the photogenic harbour city, but increasingly where things are happening is out west,” says Wood. ”Our role is to empower businesses with data they can use when making decisions to take advantage of these trends.”
Wood concludes that businesses should recognise the shifts taking place across Western Sydney are more than a response to cost-of-living pressures, as people seek more affordable ways to live.
“When we launched this research, we expected activity in the east and the return to the city centre to be the dominant themes. Instead, we’re seeing this thriving activity in the west, which, the closer we look, appears to be part of a broader structural shift,” says Wood.
