BLOOD DONORS URGENTLY NEEDED.
As Cyclone Alfred hits supplies
BLOOD donors are urgently needed as the impact of Cyclone Alfred in Queensland leads to a shortfall of more than 1,000 blood and plasma donations a day.
Australian Red Cross Lifeblood has been forced to close 22 donor centres across Queensland and Northern NSW due to the cyclone. The Parramatta donation centre is at 22 – 30 Oak St, Rosehill.
The impacted centres are in Brisbane CBD, Chermside, Ipswich, Maroochydore, Nambour, Robina, Southport, Springwood, Strathpine, Toowoomba, Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone, Bundaberg, Harvey Bay and
LLismore. Six regional mobile centres have also been shut.
Executive Director of Donor Experience, Cath Stone said the safety of donors and staff was Lifeblood’s utmost priority.
“We do not want anyone putting themselves in danger during this weather event. We are calling on people in other parts of the country to step up and book a donation so we can make up this shortfall.
“Blood is a critical resource and there are patients across Australia, including in impacted areas, who are reliant on blood and plasma donations.”
She said additional blood supplies were
pre-emptively sent to hospitals in affected areas to counter any possible impact on blood delivery services with further stocks sent from unaffected states.
“We’ve been working closely with hospitals this week to ensure they had enough stock before the cyclone arrived.
“We’re a national organisation and can move blood around as needed, but we can’t replenish stocks without people donating.
“There may be people out there thinking, 'How can I help?’ Donating blood ensures that patients in these communities get the medical treatment they need,” Cath added.
Lifeblood will continue to monitor
the situation in Queensland. The safety of donors and staff remains the priority while working to get donor centres back up and running.
“We know people’s routines are going to be impacted for some time, so we again ask people in other parts of the country to roll up their sleeves and help make up the donations we’ve lost this week in Queensland,” Cath said.
Lifeblood’s thoughts are with everyone affected by the flooding.

Join the PCYC Parramatta Club Committee
N 2025, PCYC NSW will be refreshing several club committees, including PCYC Parramatta.
The committee plays a vital role in building relationships between clubs, local communities, and Youth Command Police Officers, helping the organization fulfil the mission to empower youth and engage the community.
PCYC NSW is one of Australia's leading youth charities, dedicated to empowering young people to reach their potential and make positive contributions to society.
Their mission is to reduce and prevent youth crime by against young people. They do this by engaging young people in activities that foster their development, wellbeing, resilience, and community connection.
Guided by a vision to build safer, stronger communities, PCYC works collaboratively with police and community partners to deliver impactful programs and services across their NSW club network.
PCYC is shaped by locals to be life changing, for all. They want to work with the new committee to find a permanent home for PCYC Parramatta.
With recent changes to the Parramatta location, Parramatta PCYC is now on the hunt for somewhere new to call home.
Last year they opened a temporary youth hub at Westfield Parramatta. The 2024 Youth Hub was a dynamic space delivering core mission programs like
UFit for Life, Fit for Work, and U-Nites to support and empower local youth. This space was handed back to Westfield at the end of January, so now the search is on for a permanent solution for the rising generation of Parramatta and the broader community that can offer the array of sport, recreation
and programs for young people, that we offer in our other Clubs across NSW.
PCYC NSW remains a trusted partner in supporting the youth and families of NSW, and they look to the local community members to continue this commitment to youth.
The club committee works closely with the local club manager and police to develop strategies that address the needs of local youth, recruit new members and volunteers, and promote PCYC across Parramatta.
Members also build partnership networks, advocate for youth and the broader community and support local fundraising initiatives to achieve PCYC’s mission and vision.
Parramatta PCYC invites nominations from those interested in joining the committee and supporting the vision for the future. Your participation will be invaluable in guiding our Club’s growth, finding our new home, and supporting positive change in the lives of young people.
For more information on committee roles and the nomination process, email Karen Maissin at kmaissin@pcycnsw.org.au.
Car buyers warned over tampering
SED-car buyers across Parramatta are being urged to check a vehicle’s history before purchase after NSW Fair Trading issued 28 fines in a month and a man was sentenced to a nine-month intensive corrections order for unlicenced motor dealing and odometer tampering.
During the crackdown, NSW Fair Trading issued 54 penalty notices in relation to car sales and repairs valued at more than $100,000. While more than half were for odometer interference,
other offences included the non-supply of goods and services, and unlicensed vehicles and sales.
Additionally, Andrew Rodney Leech pled guilty to operating without a motor dealer’s licence and odometer tampering. Between 2020 and 2022 Leech sold 16 vehicles while unlicensed, online with one car having an odometer that had been wound back by more than 200,000 kilometres.
Buyers of used vehicles are being
urged to research the car’s history to ensure it has no outstanding finance, has not been written off in a crash, and has accurate odometer readings.
The NSW Government offers a free vehicle registration check where prospective buyers have access to a NSW-registered vehicle’s previous three annual odometer readings, as well as basic details like vehicle make, registration and insurance history.
Across the motor vehicle industry in
2024, NSW Fair Trading took disciplinary action against 21 licensed motor vehicle dealers and repairers, resulting in 10 licence cancellations, 13 disqualifications including three permanent, and one suspension.
For more information on consumer protections relating to purchasing a used vehicle visit the NSW Fair Trading website here:

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY
Which women inspired you?
KATIE MULLENS
WITH International Women’s Day just passed, I’ve been thinking about the women who inspire me.
And at the top of the list is my Nanna, Barbara Jean. Born in Granville in 1936, Nanna had to drop out of school at just 13 years of age after her father died, so she could help support her family.
Just 13, and she was already working as a secretary in Parramatta to make sure that her family was looked after.
Nanna’s example has taught me about the importance of hard work and determination. She was focused on serving the needs of others ahead of her own and making sure that other people are looked after.
Nanna was so proud when I moved to Parramatta 20 years ago to study at Western Sydney University, not just because I was the first in my family to get a university degree but because Parramatta is a place she held very dear to her heart.
She was even prouder when I was endorsed as the Liberal candidate for Parramatta just a few months before she passed away.
I’m a firm believer that people who work hard, should have their hard work rewarded - whether you’re working hard to own your own home, start your own business or build a great life for your family.
Unfortunately for the past three years many people in our community have found that no matter how hard you work, you just can’t get ahead. With rents up 17 per cent, food prices up 12% and electricity up 32%, just trying to cover all your bills feels
like struggling in quicksand.
The decisions that our government will make in the next 12 months will either help us get out of the quicksand or send us even deeper.
These decisions will either help rebuild business confidence, increase investment and tame inflation or will see the number of local business closures continue to grow.
We need to get the cost-of-living crisis back under control and ensure that hard work and aspirations are once again rewarded.
But back to International Women’s Day.
My Nanna has served as my guide and inspiration, encouraging me to put my hand up for the opportunity to represent our community and help others.
This International Women’s Day I will be celebrating her and other amazing women who had made their mark in our community at events across Parramatta.
I’m particularly looking forward to City of Parramatta’s Empower Her: A Day of Community and Creativity celebrations on Saturday, March 15 at Parramatta Town Hall.

Rising women of Western Sydney
THE City of Parramatta and Parramatta Eels, with support from Western Sydney University, have announced the inaugural winner of the Rising Women of Western Sydney scholarship during an International Women’s Day event at Parramatta Town Hall.
28-year-old youth and education advocate Kirstene Ciappara has been named the 2025 winner of the scholarship, valued at more than $30,000 and part of a three-year partnership between the City and the Parramatta Eels.
“I am incredibly honoured to be selected as the first recipient of the Rising Women of Western Sydney Scholarship,” Ms Ciappara said.
“This opportunity will enable me to expand my business, myDESIGN, and reach many more students, helping them discover their passions and live out their purpose.”
“I’m excited to use this scholarship to further my work in youth development and wellbeing, and I’m deeply grateful for the support from the Eels, Western Sydney University, and the City of Parramatta.”
City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Cr Martin Zaiter said the scholarship was about helping the next generation of influential women in the west to reach their full potential.
“Western Sydney women are bright and resilient – this scholarship gives a promising young woman a chance to
really make an impact,” Cr Zaiter said.
“We want to invest in women who can be effective leaders for our community – women who will lead the way as we grow into a global City.”
“Kirstene is a true rising woman of the west, and I look forward to seeing her continue her work to make a positive difference in our community.”
Parramatta Eels Chief Executive Officer Jim Sarantinos congratulated Kirstene on being announced as this
year’s winner.
“We believe the Rising Women of Western Sydney Scholarship presents an incredible opportunity for Kirstene to scale her initiative and create significant social impact,” Mr Sarantinos said.
“The collaboration and support from the Eels, Western Sydney University, and the City of Parramatta will help to further elevate her program.
“While the other candidates were impressive, we felt Kirstene is in the
best position to maximise the scholarship and create immediate impact.”
About the Rising Women of Western Sydney scholarship:
The scholarship is part of a threeyear partnership between the City and the Eels that is delivering free rugby league clinics for local kids, building participation and inclusion for young girls in multicultural communities and aiming to grow the reputation of Parramatta as a visitor destination.
It’s open to women aged 18 to 28 years who live, work or study in the Parramatta LGA and/or can show significant connection to the local community – for example, through sport, volunteering or other community-based activities.
It provides an opportunity to build their skills and to strengthen their educational qualifications, helping them to reach their full potential.
The sponsorship package includes:
• $15,000 cash scholarship
• An internship with the Parramatta Eels in an identified business area
• A leadership course with the Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue valued at $13,000

More eggs means healthy hearts
AMONASH University study found that eating eggs 1-6 times per week is linked to a 29% lower risk of cardiovascular disease-related death and a 15% lower risk of all-cause mortality in older adults. Published in Nutrients, the study suggests eggs provide essential nutrients and support longevity, especially in moderate-to-high-quality diets. Findings also indicate no increased risk for individuals with high cholesterol, supporting eggs as a nutritious, accessible food for older adults.
Legal questions about self-driving cars
AS self-driving and semi-autonomous vehicles become more common, legal questions arise about liability in accidents. Slater and Gordon’s Bree Smith highlights the evolving legal landscape, emphasizing the need for public awareness. While fully autonomous cars remain
in trials, semi-autonomous features like Tesla’s Autopilot complicate fault determination. With no uniform national laws yet, the Federal Government is developing the Automated Vehicle Safety Law to regulate autonomous driving by 2030 and clarify liability issues.
Govt fast tracks housing approvals
THE NSW Government is fast-tracking housing approvals by cutting red tape and ensuring faster water and wastewater infrastructure connections. The Housing Approval Reform Action Plan—a collaboration between DCCEEW, Sydney Water, and WaterNSW—aims to streamline
approvals, expand risk-based triaging, and enhance industry engagement. With a $2.2B investment in infrastructure, the plan supports faster construction while maintaining environmental sustainability, reinforcing the government’s commitment to addressing NSW’s housing crisis.
Woolies expands quiet hour times
WOOLWORTHS has expanded its Quiet Hour to five days a week, offering a low-sensory shopping experience for customers with sensory sensitivities. Running Monday to Friday, 10:30-11:30am, most stores will reduce lighting, lower noise, and minimize disruptions. Launched in 2019 with Life Without Barriers, Quiet Hour now operates in 900+ stores nationwide, enhancing accessibility and independence for customers. The expansion follows successful trials during peak shopping periods like Christmas.
Prison staff and inmate relationships
THE NSW Government has strengthened laws to criminalize all sexual relationships between prison staff and inmates, removing the need to prove risk to prison safety. The Crimes (Administration of Sentences) Act 1999 now imposes criminal liability, including prison sentences. This follows an inquiry into misconduct at Dillwynia Correctional Centre, with all 31 recommendations accepted to improve transparency, safety, and trust in NSW corrective services.
Builders welcome rates cut with caution
MASTER Builders Australia welcomes the RBA’s interest rate cut but stresses the need for Federal Government action on housing and cost-of-living challenges. While lower rates provide relief, core issues like land shortages, planning delays, workforce constraints, and rising construction costs remain. With construction costs up 40% in five years and build times extended by 80% over 15 years, urgent reforms are needed to streamline approvals and boost productivity.
Koala Personality Quiz updated
THE Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) has updated its Koala Personality Quiz, adding new Koalas from its Adopt a Koala program. The fun, interactive quiz helps participants discover their Koala match while learning about conservation. With engaging prompts and interactive elements, AKF aims to boost awareness and encourage Koala adoptions. Available now on their website, users can share results on social media to spread the conservation message.
Warning over cashless gambling
THE NSW Council of Social Service (NCOSS) welcomes the NSW Government’s gambling reform consultation papers but stresses that mandatory cashless gaming remains the most effective harm-minimization tool. The papers propose facial recognition technology and a third-party exclusion register to help problem gamblers. While NCOSS supports these measures, CEO Cara Varian urges a statewide exclusion register and calls on the government to implement mandatory cashless gaming as recommended by experts.
Tasmania the healthiest place to live
AMONASH University study has ranked Tasmania and Hobart as Australia’s healthiest places to live, while Darwin and the Northern Territory ranked the unhealthiest. The Environmental Quality Health Index (EQHI) assesses air quality, green spaces, climate, and socioeconomic factors to measure health risks. Coastal regions generally scored higher than inland areas. The study highlights the need for targeted improvements in lower-scoring regions to reduce health risks and promote wellbeing across Australia.

Benefits of sport for children under 10
PHYSICAL activity is a crucial part of a child’s development, and engaging in sports from an early age offers numerous benefits.
For children under 10, participating in sports isn’t just about staying active; it contributes to their physical, mental, and social growth. Whether it’s soccer, swimming, gymnastics, or martial arts, playing sports helps shape a well-rounded and confident child.
1. Physical Health and Development
One of the most obvious benefits of sport is improving physical health. In a world where screen time is increasing and outdoor play is decreasing, sports provide an essential way for children to stay active. Regular physical activity helps:
• Improve cardiovascular health by strengthening the heart and lungs.
• Build strong bones and muscles, reducing the risk of injuries and conditions like osteoporosis later in life.
• Maintain healthy weight, reducing the risk of childhood obesity and associated health problems like diabetes.
• Enhance motor skills, coordination, and balance, which are vital for overall physical development.
Young children who engage in sports are more likely to develop a lifelong habit of staying active, setting them up for a healthier future.
2. Mental and Emotional Well-being
Sports don’t just benefit the body— they also have a profound impact on a child’s mental and emotional health. Physical activity is known to release endorphins, which can improve mood and reduce stress. Additionally, sports help children develop important psychological skills, such as:
• Confidence and self-esteem –Achieving goals, learning new skills, and receiving praise from coaches and teammates boost a child’s self-confidence.
• Resilience and perseverance –Sports teach children to handle setbacks, whether it’s losing a game or struggling with a new skill. They learn to keep try-
ing and develop a growth mindset.
• Concentration and discipline
– Many sports require children to focus, follow instructions, and practice regularly, which helps improve their attention span and self-discipline.
3. Social Skills and Teamwork
For children under 10, social development is just as important as physical and mental growth. Sports provide an excellent opportunity for children to learn how to interact with others, make friends, and work as part of a team. Through sports, they develop:
• Communication skills – Whether it’s calling for a pass in soccer or listening to a coach’s instructions,
sports encourage verbal and non-verbal communication.
• Teamwork and cooperation –Working together toward a common goal teaches children the importance of collaboration and supporting others.
• Respect and sportsmanship –Learning to win gracefully and lose with dignity helps children develop empathy and respect for others.
4. Encouraging Healthy Habits for Life
Introducing children to sports at a young age encourages them to develop positive habits that last a lifetime. They learn the importance of regular exercise, a balanced diet, and good sleep patterns—essential components of a healthy lifestyle. Additionally, participating in sports keeps children engaged in productive activities, reducing the likelihood of them developing sedentary habits or unhealthy lifestyle choices as they grow older.
Sports play a vital role in the overall development of children under 10. From physical fitness and mental well-being to social skills and life lessons, the benefits are undeniable. Encouraging young children to participate in sports not only helps them stay healthy and active but also equips them with essential skills for future success. Whether through structured team sports or casual outdoor play, every child can benefit from the joy and rewards of being active.

ISTARTED as the ‘Driving Miss Daisy’ of the group. Having just turned 50 and never having been at the controls of a boat or a PWC (personal watercraft) in my life, I was going to keep things pretty conservative.
With a few simple instructions on how to safely enjoy the latest Sea-Doo Personal Watercraft, such as maintain a safe distance because there are no brakes and wear a lifejacket, but then it was like, hang on, this is fun.
I was feeling the thrill of excitement the faster I went. They said in the safety

NEW LUXURY VILLAS IN THE Coastal town of Bingin in Bali
IF you’re seeking the perfect blend of luxury, intimacy, and proximity to one of Bali’s most striking areas, look no further than Mazari Villas.
Located on Bali’s Bukit Peninsula, this clever find offers a tranquil retreat that’s still within reach of the island’s best beaches, vibrant nightlife, yoga studios, popular restaurants, and elevated boho fashion spots. Set in a rapidly developing area, this is a great time to visit before prices rise and adjacent new high-end developments take shape.
First impressions
From the moment we arrived, we were completely enchanted by the stunning cliffside vistas and sparkling views of nearby beaches such as Uluwatu, Dreamtime and Ngang Ngang. Mazari Villas is just 50 minutes from Ngurah Rai International Airport, making it convenient without sacrificing the exclusivity of its location.
As we neared the villa, our driver snaked through winding, secluded streets, lined with lush tropical gardens. This only heightened our anticipation of arriving at a luxurious, up-and-coming enclave that promises to be the next must visit Bali destination.
When we arrived at Mazari Villas, we were greeted with warmth and professionalism by our Villa Butler, Adhi, whose impeccable service immediately set the tone for our stay. Available 24/7 via WhatsApp, Adhi was quick to offer recommendations, arrange transport, and cater to any special requests. We were treated to a thorough villa tour with a refreshing arrival drink, and could immediately see why Mazari Villas is on the cusp of discovery for Bali lovers.
The villa itself was a modern
mansion, inspired by the crisp, whitewashed feel of Santorini. The open-air design featured pristine white walls, complemented by an aquamarine Mediterranean-style in-villa pool that was all ours. A cosmopolitan layout, with furnishings and artwork chosen to enhance the serene and inviting atmosphere.
Villas and In-villa services
We were fortunate to spend two nights in the Iona Villa, a two-bedroom residence that felt like our own magical escape. The villa was spacious with large floor to ceiling windows that allowed natural light to cascade throughout. One of the highlights was the sunken living room, which created
a cozy and intimate mood. It was the perfect spot to unwind after a day of exploring the area or lounging by the pool.
We also enjoyed the new smart TV, which offered plenty of entertainment options for a quiet night in.
The villa also came equipped with a curated ‘Uluwatu Essentials’ and ‘Curated Experiences’ guides, thoughtfully put together by our Villa Butler. This guide not only included recommendations for local restaurants, but also insights into the best spas, beaches, and the most scenic sunset spots. Whether a local surf lesson, fishing trip or bespoke art and craft workshop takes your fancy, Mazari will effortlessly cater to your needs.
Dining and food options
One of the best aspects of staying at Mazari Villas was the freedom to indulge in a variety of dining options without having to leave the property. While the villa’s kitchen was fully equipped and operational for cooking up a feast, we opted to take advantage of Bali’s thriving delivery culture. With apps like Gojek and Grab, it was easy to have delicious, local meals delivered straight to our door, often within 30 minutes.
The team provides a well-edited list of the best eateries in the area, making it simple to explore local cuisine. We enjoyed dinner by the pool, sipping California wine while sampling a range of Balinese dishes, from international to Indonesian favourites.
Surrounding areas
A fun and unexpected find just around the corner was Fleur Caf?, offering fresh coffee and pastries in a laidback atmosphere, making it a favourite among the global nomad crowd. I loved the sketch books and reflection cards in this cute cafe, encouraging patrons to express themselves or have a moment of quiet reflection over their morning brew before heading out to explore. The area around Mazari Villas is home to some of Bali’s best dining spots, offering everything from casual cafes to luxe dining experiences. The proximity to Bingin Beach and Uluwatu’s main drag meant that we could easily grab a scooter or arrange a quick ride for a night out.
For a full day of relaxation, Sundays Beach Club is the perfect option. Just 20 minutes from the villas, it features a stunning beachfront location that offers a range of activities, from swimming and reading a book under a private cabana, to enjoying a cocktail and snack by the water. Walk-ins are welcome but Sundays also offer a VIP pack with towels, welcome hamper and a food and beverage credit for your day.
Sunset at Sundays is magic with a saxophone performance and beach bonfires shifting the venue into nightlife mode. The Balinese gods thankfully got us to the airport on time, and we cheekily boarded our flight.

PRETTY PRICE TO PAY FOR THE POOCH
Understanding pet custody battles
ADOG doesn't care if you're rich or poor...give him your heart and he'll give you his.
The tearjerker Marley and Me is a film all about the emotions involved in being a pet owner.
And it is this emotional bond that proves very difficult when pet ownership has to be determined in the event a couple splits.
Mathew Nott, principal of Parramatta based Nott and Co Lawyers, has appeared in the seminal dog case in Australia in which the ownership of Harold the dog was contested.
“Couples start to build a life together and buy a dog and the dog becomes like a family member to them,” Mr Nott said.
“If things go sour, there is always a debate about who keeps the dog and this issue often ends up being litigated in court as part of a broader legal settlement.
“These court cases can rack up tens of thousands of dollars in legal fees.
“There are some amendments to the law coming which will see pets treated differently if there is a break-up and this is a good thing”
The legal battle often becomes bitter as pet owners do not understand the legal fact that dogs, according to Australian law, are currently treated as property, just like a can of baked beans.
New laws coming
The Family Law Act does not provide clear guidance on determining ownerhsip of the pet in the event of a separation.
In 2024, a new bill was introduced into the NSW Parliament and it may provide assistance through its proposed amendments.
The Family Law Amendment Bill 2024 defines pets as companions animals, not property, and will empower courts to give ownership of the pet to one party after considering factors such as:
1. Any history of family violence.
2. Who has cared for the animal.
3. Any history of cruelty to the pet.
4. The relationship of any children with the pet.
Courts will not assign joint custody of a pet, to prevent ongoing and further disputes.
If the pet came into a relationship owned by one of the parties, this will be persuasive. The bill is not yet law.
How to get in front of the issue
Pet custody can be set out in con-
sent orders, prenuptial, postnuptial, or de facto financial agreements with your partner.
Arrangements for the custody of pets can also be made verbally but it is better to have a written agreement of some form which can be relied upon.
If you own a pet and have recently split from your partner, contact Nott and Co lawyers at www.nottandcolawyers.com.au
