Retirees bring creative comfort

A

GROUP of retirees in Oran Park are spending their days building wooden toys for children escaping domestic violence, helping bring comfort to some of the Macarthur region's most vulnerable families.

The volunteer woodworking group, known as the Mitre Joint, operates from Anglicare's Oran Park Village and produces around 40 to 50 handmade toys every week.

The workshop was founded by resident Brian, who moved to Oran Park Village 12 years ago and quickly recognised the opportunity to create a space where residents could connect and contribute to the community.

"I spent my life playing with wood and woodwork and [making] toys, so I was quite interested to take it on. I was the president in the workshop for eight years," says Brian.

The group initially made nesting boxes for local councils before turning their attention to supporting children in need.

Today, they craft trains, tractors and doll beds that are donated to children staying in domestic violence shelters.

"When the family splits and the wife has got to take off, she grabs the kids and they go to a safe house. They don't take any toys with them. They just grab their total essentials, and they might be there for quite a while," says Brian.

"So we decided to help cover that and supply toys.

It gives the kids something to do and something to own and take home."

Beyond helping local children, the workshop has

become an important social outlet for residents adjusting to retirement and downsizing.

"It's a really good bunch of guys to get together, and it's great because it's camaraderie, and it gives the guys something to do. When they first come here, they've come out of a big house, big garden, and then suddenly they've come down to a smaller environment, and the men find they've got nothing to do," says Brian.

The Mitre Joint shows that a simple woodworking project can strengthen both community connections and the lives of local families in need.

COUNCIL UNRESPONSIVE TO FAMILY CONCERNS

Action needed for Bardia crossing

AMILIES at a Bardia childcare centre say they are still being left to cross a busy road without proper pedestrian safety measures of any kind, despite repeated approaches to both Campbelltown City Council (CCC) and the NSW Government over almost two years.

The issue centres on busy Bardia Avenue outside Futuro Childcare & Education Bardia day care centre, where parents and young children regularly cross the increasingly busy road without the aid of a pedestrian crossing.

The centre caters for over just 120 pre-schoolers every day.

Futuro first contacted CCC about the issue back in September 2024 when the Council acknowledged the safety concern, installing CCTV monitoring at the site for a week in November that year to assess traffic volumes, pedestrian movements and overall safety conditions.

In early 2025, the Council advised that officers had completed site reviews and CCTV investigations and concluded that a pedestrian crossing at the location was both “feasible and beneficial”.

But the centre and families were also informed the project would depend on further planning, stakeholder consultation, funding and resource allocation.

ment road safety grants in partnership with Transport for NSW. With no firm commitment or timeframe, the issue was escalated to the NSW Government in June 2025, supported by correspondence and a petition signed by local families.

The issue was eventually referred to the State Minister for Roads, Jenny Aitchison.

Despite further follow-up in August and September 2025, Futuro’s Chief Operating Officer Megan Black said no substantive response was initially received.

A later written response from Minister Aitchison’s office confirmed Bardia Avenue remained a local road under council management and that pedestrian safety infrastructure at the site was ultimately a council responsibility.

The response again referred to

existing funding programs available to councils, but did not provide any commitment or delivery timeline.

Ms Black said families were frustrated that responsibility appeared to be shifting between different levels of government while the safety issue remained unresolved.

“In practical terms, where things currently sit is this - Council has indicated that a pedestrian crossing is warranted and beneficial, but says delivery is dependent on funding and further project planning,” Ms Black said.

“The State response has largely referred the matter back to Council and existing funding programs.

“In the meantime, families and young children continue to navigate the [Bardia Avenue] crossing daily, and we have not received any clear advice as to when, or if, a crossing will actually be

delivered.”

Ms Black said the ongoing uncertainty was the core concern for parents and carers using the centre each day.

“That is really the heart of the issue for us,” she said. “The safety concern has been recognised, but there has still been no meaningful outcome.”

Traffic volumes on the already very busy Bardia Avenue continue to increase as surrounding residential development expands.

Day care families, alongside Futuro, are urging both CCC and the State Government to work together to provide a funded pathway and clear timeframe for the installation of a pedestrian crossing before an accident occurs.

We put detailed questions to Campbelltown City Council but by the time we went to press we had not received a response.

Menangle research centre funds boost

ONSTRUCTION has begun on a $31M upgrade of the Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute (EMAI) at Menangle, reinforcing its role as one of the world’s leading centres for agricultural research and biosecurity.

The investment is part of the NSW Government’s commitment to protecting NSW agriculture, with more than $100M invested in agricultural research over the past year and more than $1 billion directed towards biosecurity systems and programs.

The latest works include a $15M high-containment insectary designed to enhance the state’s ability to respond to damaging insect and mite pests.

A further $6.5M will upgrade greenhouse facilities used for plant biosecurity research and diagnostics, while $4.8M will expand the animal house research facility. Another $4.7 million has been allocated to critical laboratory and infrastructure improvements across the campus.

“The Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute is one of the world’s

leading primary industries research centres and the Minns Government is committed to making it even better,” Ms Moriarty said.

She said the investment would allow scientists to continue delivering world-first breakthroughs and strengthen preparedness against future biosecurity incursions.

EMAI researchers recently helped develop a world-first vaccine for footand-mouth disease, a disease that could cost the Australian economy up to $80 billion in the event of an outbreak.

The institute also made Australia’s first detection of Japanese encephalitis virus in pig samples, enabling health authorities to identify human cases, and has used advanced genetic technologies to rapidly confirm or rule out dangerous pests such as varroa mite and Polyphagous Shot-Hole Borer.

Ms Moriarty said the work undertaken at Menangle often occurred behind the scenes but was critical to protect farmers, communities and the future of NSW agriculture.

Payday Super becomes reality The biggest change is the introduction of Payday Super. Business owners need to be on top of this, as compliance will be monitored by the Tax Office, with interest and penalties applicable for any late payments.

Until now, employers have generally been able to pay Super contributions on a quarterly basis. This means an employee could receive their wages today, while the associated super contribution may not arrive in their fund for several months.

From 1 July 2026, Payday Super means employers will be required to pay contributions within 7 calendar days of each payday.

For employees, this means contributions reach their super fund sooner.

Money will be invested faster and begins working for them earlier. It also becomes easier to identify missing or delayed contributions.

For small business owners, the change requires that they place greater importance on managing their cash flow.

Each pay day, wages plus 12% Super contributions will be required. Now is a good time to talk with your accountant, bookkeeper or coach and make sure your business can comfortably cover wages and super each pay cycle.

Contribution limits are increasing The new financial year also brings higher contribution limits you can use to grow your Super.

The before-tax (concessional) contribution cap increases from $30,000 to $32,500 per year.

The after-tax (non-concessional) contribution cap increases from $120,000 to $130,000. This also means the 3-year bring-forward provisions increase from $360,000 to $390,000.

These increases create additional opportunities for Australians who want to build retirement savings in a tax-effective environment.

Salary Sacrifice remains attractive Salary sacrifice continues to be a valuable strategy for many employees and business owners who draw a salary.

What this means is a part of a person's income is voluntarily contributed directly into Super before tax. These contributions are then taxed at 15% within the Super fund rather than at

Service NSW Centre for Campbelltown

ESIDENTS across Campbelltown and Sydney’s south-west will soon have easier access to government services, with the NSW Government confirming a new Service NSW Centre at Macarthur Square Shopping Centre.

The new facility, located on Level 2 of the shopping centre, is part of a $13.6 million statewide investment to improve Service NSW facilities and restore services to one of Sydney’s fastest-growing regions. The previous Campbelltown RMS office was closed in 2015, forcing residents to travel to neighbouring suburbs.

The centre will provide access to more than 1,300 NSW Government transactions and services and will cater to residents from Campbelltown and surrounding suburbs including Ambarvale, Appin, Bradbury, Leumeah

and Menangle Park. It will complement existing Service NSW centres at Edmondson Park and Gregory Hills.

Designed to provide a modern customer experience, the centre will feature 14 customer service counters, self-service digital kiosks, computer testing spaces and meeting rooms for appointments.

Driver testing services will also be

available, alongside those offered at the nearby Macquarie Fields Driver Testing Centre.

Construction is expected to commence in the coming months, with the new centre due to open later this year.

Minister for Customer Service Jihad Dib said the project would make accessing government services easier for local residents.

“This is great news for the people of Campbelltown who will no longer have to travel to neighbouring areas to access vital government services,” Mr Dib said.

“Whether you're sitting your driver test, renewing a licence or accessing government support, this new centre will make life easier for thousands of people across the region.”

Member for Campbelltown Greg Warren said the community had strongly advocated for the return of a local service centre.

“This is an incredible outcome that our community has fought so hard for,” Mr Warren said.

“This central location with significant public transport access means residents will once again have convenient access to essential government services close to home.”

Camden Fire Station is here to stay

AMDEN residents are assured today about the future of Camden Fire Station.

Prior to the NSW Government’s election in 2023, there was no guaranteed security for the future of Camden Fire Station, an integral piece of Camden infrastructure and front-line support.

In 2024, the Minister for Emergency Services Jihad Dib reassured Camden residents that the Government has no plans to close Camden Fire Station or change current staffing arrangements.

This has not changed.

Recently, Camden Fire Station received a new pumper – a new primary emergency vehicle that will transport crew, hoses, tools and a built-in water pump to an emergency.

This upgrade is an important investment into the Camden community, helping Camden/s hardworking Camden Fire Brigade to keep Camden’s friends and family safe.

This upgrade comes after a 14 per

cent wage increase over three years, backdated to February 2024, as well as the safety net of presumptive cancers which was strengthened last year.

These announcements ensure that individuals who put themselves in

harm’s way for the safety of the community are supported in their time of need.

Emergency response at Catherine Field

NEW $3.3M NSW Rural Fire Service station has officially opened at Catherine Field, providing a major boost to emergency response capabilities in one of Sydney’s fastest-growing regions.

The purpose-built facility replaces the brigade’s former station, which had served local volunteers and the community for several decades. Designed to support the brigade well into the future, the new station features three fire truck bays, dedicated training and meeting rooms, modern amenities including changerooms and bathrooms, and upgraded operational facilities.

Commissioner Trent Curtin and Member for Leppington Nathan Hagarty toured the new station and met with volunteers as they began transitioning into the facility.

The project forms part of a broader $716.4 million investment in the NSW Rural Fire Service, with more than $34.5 million allocated this financial year to upgrade 28 stations and Fire Control Centres across the state.

Mr Dib said the new station would ensure emergency services infrastructure kept pace with rapid population growth in Sydney’s south-west.

“This new station is a significant investment in community safety and will provide local volunteers with

the facilities they need to train, prepare and respond effectively to emergencies,” he said.

Member for Leppington Nathan Hagarty said the Catherine Field Brigade had a proud history of serving the community and would continue to play a vital role as surrounding suburbs expanded.

“It’s great to have the brigade home in Catherine Field where they can continue to operate from the heart of the community it has protected for generations,” Mr Hagarty said.

NSW RFS Commissioner Trent Curtin said the station was an investment in both infrastructure and volunteers.

I Angus Taylor with local small businesses at the recent forum in Camden.

T was great to sit down with local small business owners at my forum at Barenz in Camden and hear their stories firsthand.

What I heard from the cafés, tradies and family-run businesses that keep Camden going was clear — people are doing it tough.

Costs are rising, energy bills are up, interest rates are biting, and the pressure just keeps building.

Many told me they’re exhausted and working harder for less. But there’s something deeper going on too.

Too many people feel like no matter how hard they work, they’re falling behind. The dream of owning a home, starting a business, and getting ahead feels further out of reach.

People are frustrated, fed up, and losing confidence in the future.

And it’s being made worse by Labor’s toxic taxes, which are hitting investment, growth, and confidence.

Small business owners who’ve spent years building something are now finding it harder to invest, harder to expand, and, in too many cases, harder just to stay open.

These businesses are the backbone of our community. When they struggle, we all feel it.

We need to back aspiration again, because if it becomes too hard to get ahead, the Australian dream goes with it.

AI chatbot that reduces stigma

HE Alcohol and Drug Foundation is celebrating the success of its AI-powered chatbot, dib, which has been shortlisted in the Community Impact category of the Australian Financial Review AI Awards.

Since launching a year ago, dib has conducted around 45,000 anonymous conversations, providing evidence-based information on alcohol and other drugs. Most users are aged 18–24, with alcohol the most common topic.

Designed to reduce stigma and improve access to reliable support, dib uses trusted ADF content and safety safeguards. Winners of the awards will be announced in June.” Powered by AI, dib is a technological first in the Australian public health sector. Using dib is an anonymous, non-stigmatising way to find alcohol and other drug information in a familiar, chat-based format,” said the Alcohol and Drug Foundation’s CEO, Dr Erin Lalor AM (pictured).

Fraudulent transfer of mobile numbers

T

HE Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has fined telecom provider SpinTel $59,400 after scammers exploited weaknesses in its systems to fraudulently transfer 10 mobile numbers, causing consumer losses exceeding $45,000. SpinTel must now undergo an independent security review and implement improvements. Another provider, Yomojo, received a formal warning for failing to publish required fraud-reporting information. The ACMA has issued six enforcement actions in the past year as part of a broader crackdown on mobile number porting fraud, urging telcos to strengthen security and protect consumers from scams and identity theft.

Vinnies warn against rising living costs

ORE than half of Australians (55%) are cutting spending on essentials such as food, medication and bills to afford housing, according to a new YouGov survey com-

missioned by the St Vincent de Paul Society. The research found 29% lack sufficient savings to cover an emergency expense, with 3.7 million Australians strongly disagreeing they have a financial buffer. Launching its Winter Appeal 2026, Vinnies warned rising living costs are pushing more households into financial hardship and homelessness, urging Australians to donate as demand for assistance with food, bills and essentials continues to grow.

Investing $290M in NSW coach network

T

HE NSW Government is investing $290M over nine years to expand and improve the NSW TrainLink coach network, increasing services by 36 per cent from 1 July. The upgraded network will operate 638 weekly services across 49 routes, servicing more than 360 destinations. New routes, faster travel times, better connections and modern accessible coaches will improve journeys for regional communities, with features including wheelchair access, charging points, seatbelts, onboard defibrillators and toilets.

Illegal to leave your dog unattended

EW NSW animal welfare laws will make it illegal to leave a dog unattended in a vehicle for more than 10 minutes when temperatures exceed 28°C, with fines of up to $44,000. The reforms also ban prong collars, mandate pain relief for sheep mulesing, strengthen animal fighting penalties and improve emergency animal welfare responses. The legislation modernises 45-year-old laws and reflects strong community support for tougher animal protection standards.

The agency is hosting free cybersecurity events and promoting tools such as its Password Strength Tester to help protect against identity theft, which affects one in four Australians during their lifetime.

OMEN in NSW will soon be able to access the oral contraceptive pill directly through trained community pharmacists under a new NSW Government reform. Initially, 30 pharmacists will be able to prescribe the pill to low-risk women aged 18–39, with around 250 expected by year’s end. The government will fund the first 5,000 consultations and subsidise training for pharmacists, improving access to healthcare while reducing pressure on GPs.

I

F your business owes the ATO money, or you're quietly worried it's heading that way, this is worth five minutes.

A few things have changed in the last year, and together they mean tax debt is costing more and getting chased harder than it used to.

Start with the tax office itself, which has gone back on the front foot. There's a watchdog called the Tax Ombudsman whose job is to step in when the ATO treats someone unfairly.

The Ombudsman has just reported that complaints have more than doubled, up 127%, and most of them are about tax debt, penalties and interest.

The read on it is simple: the ATO is chasing debt harder than it has in years. So if it feels like the tax office is less patient than it used to be, you're not imagining it.

Now, here's a bit of good news inside that, because it's not all grim. When people complained, the Ombudsman got them relief about a third of the time.

Interest and penalties came down.

That tells you something important: the ATO is not a brick wall. Put a proper case to them and the number you owe

can actually change. Not always, and the ATO has tightened up on who qualifies, but the pathway is real.

Here's the part I want you to mentally underline. Those people only got that relief after a long fight. They had to lodge a formal complaint, wait it out, and wear the cost and stress of getting there, all while the interest kept ticking over. By the time it got to that stage, the problem had grown a lot bigger than it ever needed to.

In twelve years of doing this, I can't think of a single one of our clients who's ever had to go to the Ombudsman.

Not because their situations were easy.

We've taken on some that looked frightening on day one.

It's because we got in early and sorted it with the ATO before it ever blew up into a fight. Where we can, we get interest and penalties reduced. In every case, we get the business onto a payment plan it can actually sustain.

That's the whole lesson in that 127% figure. It's not "don't worry, there's a complaints process." It's "the people who do best are the ones who deal with it early, so they never end up in that pile in the first place."

The second change is the one that hits your hip pocket directly. Until last

July, the interest the ATO charges you on a tax debt was tax deductible, so at least you got a bit of it back at tax time.

That's gone.

Since 1 July 2025 you don't get any of it back. So the interest just sits there, compounding, month after month, with nothing to offset it.

Carrying a tax debt is now a fair bit more expensive than it was eighteen months ago, even if the debt itself hasn't grown. A lot of business owners haven't clocked this yet, and it's quietly costing them.

The third thing is the Budget, and what it didn't say. There was plenty in this year's Budget about housing and the cost of living. On tax debt for small business, there was nothing. No relief, no break, no sign the ATO's going to ease up. If you've been waiting and hoping things might get a bit gentler before you deal with your tax position, the Budget just answered that. They won't.

That's three things pulling the same way. The tax office is chasing harder, the debt costs more to carry, and there's no help coming. But none of it means a tax debt has to turn into a disaster. The way through, nine times out of ten, isn't getting the debt wiped. It's a payment plan that actually works.

And there's a real difference between the kind you set up yourself online and the kind we negotiate. The do-it-your-

self one is usually short, one-size-fits-all, and set to repayments the business can't really afford, so it falls over.

And once you've defaulted on one, you're worse off than when you started, with a black mark on your file the next time you go to the ATO. What we put together is built around your actual business, paid off over as long as three years, structured around the money you've genuinely got coming in, and put to the ATO in a way they'll accept.

If there's one thing to take from all this, it's this. Don't sit on a tax debt hoping it'll sort itself out, because the system has been built so that waiting costs you more.

The business owners who come through this in good shape are the ones who pick it up early, while they've still got options, and get the right help to deal with it properly. If that's you, the time to do something about it is now, not when the letters start arriving.

When you miss that touch of Japan

HERE’s a newly reimagined venue in Bar Hanami that reopened in January 2026 and somehow manages to feel like your last trip to Japan and a cool whisky bar rolled into one.

Spread across three levels, the 98-seat space blends subtle Japanese styling with playful warmth cherry blossom motifs, kimono-print cushions, warm timber finishes and glowing pink-red lighting creating the kind of atmosphere you stumble across down a Tokyo or Osaka side street.

The pièce de résistance or medama (Japanese for main attraction) is the extraordinary handcrafted floral ceiling. Tropical trails, red dirt and Pacific XC

LYING into New Caledonia, the landscape already hints that this is somewhere different. The lagoon glows an almost impossible blue, ridgelines stretch into the distance and deep red earth cuts through thick tropical forest.

Before the wheels even touch down, it feels less like a classic island holiday and more like a destination built for adventure.

Most Australian riders still don’t associate New Caledonia with mountain biking, but the riding scene developing across the South Province deserves serious attention. And the best part? This wasn’t manufactured for tourism. The riding culture was already here.

At Domaine de Deva, local rider Christophe Chevillier introduced us to the scale of the region’s biggest developed MTB domain.

The terrain constantly changes dry forest, savannah-style sections, exposed red dirt, flowing hardpack and spectacular views across the UNESCO-listed lagoon.

The riding is physical without relying on huge elevation. Heat, humidity and relentless terrain keep riders working the entire time.

Christophe explained that Deva has evolved into one of the territory’s key riding destinations because it combines legitimate trail riding with scenery and tourism appeal. Fami-

ly-friendly loops sit alongside longer adventure rides spread across an enormous coastal landscape, delivering that rare “wide open space” feeling.

What also stands out is the increasing level of investment and structure across the region. Several South Province trail networks now hold official certification from the French Cycling Federation (FFC), recognising trail quality, signage, infrastructure and safety standards.

That progression becomes even more obvious at Les Boucles de Tina near Nouméa. After a stop at Pro Bike Nouméa with Nino Castets, Christophe guided us through what can only be described as a tropical XC bike park.

Tina holds official FFC XCO Stadium certification and features berms, rollers, rainforest canopy, punchy climbs and flowing descents only minutes from the city.

One of the strongest impressions came from seeing local school kids out riding with coaches, absolutely flying around the trails. It gave the scene a genuine grassroots feel — not just elite athletes training, but young riders growing up with mountain biking as part of everyday life.

Further south, the riding shifts again. At Blue River Park, guided by TOUTAZIMUT Tours and local guide Axelle, the landscape becomes wild and almost surreal: drowned for-

ests, giant lakes, mining country and endless red dirt wilderness perfect for gravel and marathon riding.

Meanwhile, Parc Provincial des Grandes Fougères delivers humid rainforest, roots and narrow natural singletrack that feels raw and old-school in the best possible way.

That diversity is what makes New Caledonia so compelling. Tropical XC, coastal riding, rainforest singletrack and long-distance adventure all exist within a surprisingly compact region.

Then, at the end of the day, you’re still in New Caledonia eating fresh

seafood, drinking French wine and cooling off in one of the Pacific’s most beautiful lagoons.

WEN (Spike Fearn) is finally getting back on his feet a year on from his mother’s death. He’s working as a sound engineer at the University pub, when he has a brief, glorious connection with a girl called Emily (Sadie Soverall).

She gives him her number and he texts the next day - only to discover that there is a digit missing.

Now Owen must find Emily in any way he can.

He enlists the help of another Emily at the university (Angourie Rice), who unbeknownst to him is using him as the subject of her social sciences paper.

Finding Emily is the sort of unencumbered, good-natured rom-com that it feels like they don’t make anymore.

Sure, there’s the trappings of the modern day to this film - a podcast, TikTok reaction videos, etc. - but the vast majority of this movie feels like it could have been ripped from the early 2000s. And honestly?

Spike Fearn is a revelation as the delightfully innocent Owen, and his mix of Beatles-looking muso, sad-boi, and lovestruck naivety play in a perfect combination; all accented by his Manchurian brogue.

It’s a breakout performance, and Fearn earns every minute on screen. The cohort of other British supporting characters are also very fun, and across the board well-acted.

The only downer is Angourie Rice as Emily Raine.

Maybe it’s the American accent in the sea of Brits,

but there’s something about Rice’s performance that makes her character a little grating.

Nevertheless, director Alicia MacDonald breezes through this film with a light touch and a genuine penchant for both the comic, and the romantic.

It’s funny in spades, but also quite lovely in equal doses. And while anyone who has ever seen a romcom can pick every twist and turn a mile off, there is

something so sweet and innocent about this film that you can’t help but watch it with a huge smile on your face.

Brain science shapes future of AI

T

HE future of artificial intelligence may depend less on better chatbots – and more on understanding how the human brain works.

CQUniversity educational neuroscience expert Professor Ken Purnell says the next generation of AI is likely to be shaped by human intelligence, not just language processing.

“Today's chatbots are remarkably capable in some tasks, but they remain brittle, unreliable and easy to overestimate,” Professor Purnell said.

“They can sound authoritative while still being wrong, and that creates real problems for learners, teachers and institutions.”

His new paper, Beyond the Chatbot: What Brain Science Tells Us About AI’s Future, explores what may come next in artificial intelligence.

Professor Purnell says understanding how the brain integrates memory, attention, emotion and decision-making will be critical to building AI that works with humans, rather than against them.

“Human intelligence isn’t just about information – it’s about how memory, attention, emotion and decision-making all work together,” he said.

“If AI systems ignore that, they risk becoming

powerful but poorly aligned with how people actually learn and think.”

The next wave of AI will look very different While chatbots dominate headlines, Professor

Purnell says the next phase of AI is likely to move beyond language-based systems.

Instead of simply predicting text, future systems may: • Build internal models of how the world works.

• Combine memory, perception and reasoning.

• Behave more like human thinking systems.

This shift is already being explored by leading AI researchers, including Yann LeCun, who argues current chatbot-style systems will not lead to true intelligence.

At the same time, large-scale brain research led by Evian Gordon is helping map how human intelligence works – offering a potential blueprint for the next generation of AI. Professor Purnell says the real challenge is not just building more advanced AI, but ensuring it supports human thinking rather than replacing it.

“The question isn’t just how intelligent these systems become,” he said.

“It’s whether they help us think better – or slowly make us think less.”

Screen time and the control issue

Professor Purnell explains that repeated digital behaviours are not neutral.

“Online habits actively shape neural pathways.

Constant interruption can reinforce distraction rather than concentration, which can be counter-productive over time,” he said.

“What matters is not just how long people are online, but how intentional that use is. If digital engagement becomes habitual or a way to self-soothe, it may be time to pause and choose something different – even something as simple as stepping outside.”

However, CQUniversity Adjunct Senior Lecturer Dr Ragnar Purje says individuals can regain control of their lives by making conscious, positive decisions – a concept central to his work and his book Responsibility Theory.

Dr Purje argues that people are not simply passive recipients of circumstance or habit. Instead, they can actively shape their mental and emotional states through deliberate choices.

“Responsibility Theory is about recognising that while we cannot control everything that happens to us, we can control how we respond,” Dr Purje said.

“Each decision we make – even the small ones – contributes to the direction of our lives.”

Your brain learns what you repeat

The brain is always adapting His work is supported by emerging applied neuroscience research which shows the brain is constantly adapting to repeated behaviours.

This means everyday actions – particularly our screentime – can either strengthen or undermine attention, memory and self-regulation.

“Every click practises something,” Professor Purnell said. “Over time, the brain becomes better at whatever patterns of attention it performs most often – whether that’s sustained focus or constant distraction.”

Together, these insights reinforce Dr Purje’s central message that individuals have more agency than they may realise.

“Positive change doesn’t require dramatic transformation overnight,” Dr Purje said. “It starts with recognising that each choice matters, and choosing, again and again, to move in a better direction.”
