THE COLISEUM THEATRE, WESTERN SYDNEY
Building a generational cultural legacy TRISH CHARAN
T
HE Coliseum Theatre, Western Sydney is more than a performing arts venue. It’s a statement of confidence in Western Sydney, its people, its stories and its future. Since opening in 2019, the Coliseum has helped reshape perceptions of what is possible in our region. Our 2025 rebrand from Sydney Coliseum Theatre to Coliseum Theatre (Western Sydney) reflected a clear ambition: to proudly champion Western Sydney's cultural identity and ensure the region is recognised as a destination for world-class arts, entertainment and live experiences. The success of our inaugural Coliseum Summer
“WE BELIEVE GREAT ARTS VENUES DO NOT SIMPLY HOST PERFORMANCES. THEY SHAPE COMMUNITIES AND GROW THE NEXT GENERATION OF AUDIENCES” – TRISH CHARAN. Festival in 2025-26 demonstrated the power of strategic placemaking and attracted new audiences. As Western Sydney's only purpose-built multimode theatre, we have created opportunities for local audiences to experience internationally acclaimed acts and productions, major television events, orchestras, comedy, family entertainment and culturally significant performances without travelling into the city. At the same time, we have provided artists, producers and broadcasters with a venue capable of delivering at the very highest standard.
The always inspiring Colisieum Theatre and right, general manager Trish Charan.
What makes the Coliseum truly special, however, is not only what happens on our stage, but the impact it has beyond our walls. Every performance brings people together, supports local businesses, generates visitation and contributes to the economic and cultural vitality of our region. Our growth in attendance and engagement reflects a community that is embracing the venue as its own. Our ongoing partnership with Australian Idol has also positioned Western Sydney on the national stage, providing audiences with unprecedented access to major live broadcast events. As we continue to grow, we remain committed to sustainability, accessibility and innovation. The Coliseum Theatre is more than a venue; it is a cultural hub that strengthens community identity and delivers extraordinary experiences that reflect the vibrancy and ambition of Western Sydney. We believe great arts venues do not simply host performances. They shape communities, grow the next generation of audiences, strengthen identity and create memories that endure for decades. We’re proud to play that role and we are only just beginning our journey as a cultural cornerstone of Western Sydney's future. Trish Charan is general manager of Coliseum Theatre. Numbers don’t lie: Western Sydney is a destination with a huge future KAREN JONES
W
ESTERN Sydney is a powerhouse of the visitor economy and is a region that draws its strength from vibrant, diverse communities and thriving industries. And the numbers don’t lie. In the year ending June 2026, almost 30 million domestic and international visitors came to Western Sydney, staying more than 34 million nights and spending close to $10 billion in the region.
That included 6 million domestic overnight visitors, who stayed 14.5 million nights and spent $4.2B. More than half a million international visitors also came to the region, staying 20 million nights and contributing around $1.7B to the visitor economy. These numbers show that the region is already a significant visitor destination, and there is enormous potential to build on that success. The Powerhouse Parramatta, the largest cultural infrastructure project in NSW since the Sydney Opera House, is opening later this year, and will establish a major new cultural institution on the Parramatta

River, reinforcing the regions role as a cultural and economic centre. When Western Sydney International Airport opens this month, it will connect the region with new international markets and create opportunities for tourism operators, accommodation providers, restaurants, attractions and businesses. The NSW Government’s $16M Western Sydney International Take-Off Fund has helped secure the first international flight to the airport – from Auckland – as well as new routes from Singapore and Ho Chi Minh City, bringing new visitors and new opportunities. Even before the airport, Western Sydney has evolved into a visitor destination in its own right. From outdoor adventures to food, arts and culture, Western Sydney offers visitors experiences that reflect its diversity, energy and character. It is the businesses, experiences and people on the ground that give visitors a reason to come, stay longer and return. That is why the Western Sydney Tourism Awards are so important. Tonight is about recognising the people who are creating those experiences, attracting visitors and building businesses that contribute to their local communities. The NSW Government’s Visitor Economy Strategy 2035 sets a target of $91B in annual visitor expenditure by 2035, and Western Sydney will have an important role to play in reaching that goal. Achieving our goals for the Western Sydney visitor economy will require continued investment in accommodation, experiences, infrastructure, events and the workforce needed to support a growing industry. Most importantly, it will require collaboration. Achieving the goals of the Visitor Economy Strategy is a shared vision. It belongs to all of us – government, industry and communities across NSW. Destination NSW will lead, but success relies on partnership. And what will make the difference is the commitment of visitor economy leaders like those being celebrated tonight to champion it and to work with us to bring it to life. Tonight we recognise and celebrate the people already doing that work. Congratulations to all the finalists and winners of the Western Sydney Tourism Awards. Your businesses, ideas and experiences are helping shape the next chapter of tourism in Western Sydney. The scale of the opportunity is already clear – and I’m excited about what comes next. West HQ: Destination is itinerary
T
HERE’S a point where a collection of great venues becomes something more. At West HQ, that point has well and truly arrived. Set in the heart of Western Sydney, West HQ has evolved into a destination where a night at the theatre can become dinner, drinks and an overnight stay; where families can spend the day swimming, bowling and eating; and where visitors can arrive for a conference and discover there’s plenty of reason to stay beyond the final session. At its centre is the spectacular 2,000-seat Coliseum Theatre, bringing major Australian and international artists, productions and live entertainment to Western Sydney. Around it, an impressive dining precinct has taken shape, with names including CHU Restaurant by China Doll, Steak & Oyster Co. by Sean Connolly and Pizzaperta Manfredi alongside relaxed, family-friendly favourites. Then there’s the rest. The 164-room Novotel Sydney West HQ makes turning an evening out into a staycation remarkably
easy. Families have Zone Bowling and Timezone at their fingertips, while the Sydney Gymnastics and Aquatic Centre and ONE55 Health & Fitness add world-class sport, aquatic and wellness facilities to the mix. For business travellers and events, flexible conference and function spaces mean work, dining, accommodation and entertainment can all happen within the one precinct. It’s this combination that makes West HQ interesting as a tourism destination. Rather than asking visitors to travel across Sydney to piece together an itinerary, it brings the experiences together in one place. And perhaps that says something bigger about Western Sydney itself. This is a region increasingly giving visitors reasons not simply to pass through, but to make a day of it, stay the night and come back for more. At West HQ, the destination is the itinerary. CONNECTING WESTERN SYDNEY GLOBALLY
V
Packages that suit all tastes
IETRAVEL Australia is playing an increasingly valuable role in connecting Western Sydney with travellers from across Australia and around the world, combining international tourism expertise with a strong understanding of the region’s diverse communities, attractions and visitor experiences. Part of the internationally established Vietravel brand, Vietravel Australia provides a comprehensive range of travel services, including organised tours, customised itineraries, accommodation, transport and flight assistance. Its extensive destination portfolio covers Vietnam, Australia, Asia, Europe, Japan and Korea, catering for families, groups and independent travellers. The company established its Australian presence in Melbourne in 2016 before expanding into Sydney with an office in Bankstown in 2019. That Western Sydney presence provides an important connection with one of Australia’s most culturally diverse and rapidly growing regions. While Vietravel helps Australians explore destinations around the world, it is also helping showcase Western Sydney as a destination in its own right.
Its Australian tourism programs feature Western Sydney experiences and destinations including Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, Penrith, the Nepean River, Cabramatta and the gateway to the Blue Mountains. These itineraries demonstrate the extraordinary diversity of experiences available across the region – from history, sport and major attractions to nature, dining and multicultural communities. Vietravel’s Western Sydney Discovery experience, for example, brings together Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park and Cabramatta, providing visitors with an opportunity to experience the region’s heritage, internationally recognised sporting precincts and vibrant Asian food and cultural scene. This capability takes on even greater significance as Western Sydney enters a new era of tourism development. The opening of
Western Sydney International Airport creates enormous opportunities to attract visitors directly into the region, encourage longer stays and build greater awareness of Western Sydney as a destination rather than simply a gateway to central Sydney. Tour operators
such as Vietravel Australia can play an important role in turning that opportunity into visitation by packaging attractions, accommodation, dining, cultural experiences and transport into accessible itineraries for domestic and international markets. With international reach, established tourism expertise and a strong Western Sydney presence, Vietravel Australia is well positioned to help connect visitors with the region – and Western Sydney with the world. From racedays to remarkable events
T
HE Australian Turf Club (ATC) is one of Australia’s leading racing, events and hospitality organisations, hosting major events and world-class thoroughbred racing across some of Sydney’s most iconic venues. At the heart of the ATC are four famous racecourses – Royal Randwick, Rosehill Gardens, Canterbury Park and Warwick Farm. Together they host more than 110 racedays each year, alongside hundreds of business events, conferences, exhibitions, gala dinners and incentive programs. Extending well beyond racing, the ATC’s unique event precincts welcome clients and guests from across Australia and around the world, offering flexible spaces, experienced event teams, extensive production capabilities and award-winning catering. For Western Sydney, Rosehill Gardens holds particular significance. Located minutes from the Parramatta CBD, it is one of the region’s premier event precincts, hosting around 150 events each year and recognised as a finalist in the 2026 Western Sydney Tourism Awards for Meetings & Conference Venue of the Year. Designed as an interconnected precinct, Rosehill Gardens brings a diverse range of indoor and outdoor spac-
es together within one destination. Its scale and flexibility allow multiple spaces to work seamlessly together, giving organisers the ability to host conferences, exhibitions, breakout sessions, gala dinners and cocktail events all within the one precinct. Adding to its unique appeal is Rosehill Gardens’ connection to racing. Events can incorporate bespoke racing experiences and behind-the-scenes access into their programs, creating memorable moments for delegates and guests that extend beyond the traditional event format. This combination of a fully integrated event precinct and authentic racing experiences offers businesses and incentive groups something distinctly different from a conventional event venue. With a Sydney heritage spanning more than two centuries, the Australian Turf Club has evolved into one of Australia's premier meetings, events, hospitality and entertainment destinations. From corporate conferences and gala dinners to exhibitions, incentives and large-scale events, ATC combines iconic venues, award-winning service and worldclass facilities to bring every vision to life.
