Daughter Kathryn Newman said her parents had always valued their church and their community and that had supported them through seven decades of married life. Kevin Sloane and Patricia Boon knew each other as children through school, church and family associations.

134 junior doctors on the job

HE Mount Druitt community will benefit from a major boost to its local medical workforce – with 134 of medical graduate interns starting work in local public hospitals this month – the Minister for Health Ryan Park has announced.

Interns are medical graduates who have completed their medical degree and are required to complete a supervised year of practice to become independent practitioners.

The interns will work with and learn from NSW Health’s experienced and highly skilled medical staff in one of the world’s best health systems.

The new doctors starting

their internship will be entering a training program with networked hospitals throughout the state, providing formal and on-the-job training.

They receive two-year contracts to rotate between metropolitan, regional and rural hospitals to ensure the diversity of their experience.

They also rotate across different specialties during the intern year, including surgery, medicine and emergency medicine.

The NSW Government is undertaking an ambitious plan to rebuild the state’s health workforce, including through: • Implementing safe staffing levels of nurses and midwives beginning in our emergency departments; • saving 1,112 temporary nurses by making them permanent; • sbolishing the wages cap and delivering record pay increases for nurses, paramedics and other health workers as well as salary packaging; • Beginning to roll out

500 additional paramedics in regional, rural and remote communities; and • Doubling the health worker study subsidies.

Member for Mount Druitt, Edmond Atalla said: “The Minns Government is working hard to address the 12 years of neglect our health workers have suffered under the previous Liberal/National government.

I very much welcome the allocation of 134 interns to the Western Sydney Local Health District, which is essential in improving and supporting our health workforce. An improved health workforce will see improved health outcomes for our communities.”

Tertiary scholarships applications now open

LACKTOWBN City Council is offering scholarships to the value of $1,500 to 15 local tertiary students.

In announcing the scholarships, Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM said; “Council is proud to champion the diversity, talent and achievements of our tertiary

students as they pursue their chosen fields.”

Rachel Lafrenais was awarded a Tertiary Scholarship last year; “I felt very privileged to receive the scholarship. It motivated me to go on and gain my Certificate 4 TAFE qualification in Mental Health.”

MP LEADING CHARGE FOR REVAMPED TOWN CENTRE

IVERSTONE is set to get a new lease of life with a plan to revamp the town centre.

Member for Riverstone Warren Kirby said input from the community began last month and was now well under way.

The Town Centre Masterplan is a collaborative process with residents, community groups, the Member for Riverstone, the Department of Planning and Environment, the NSW Reconstruction Authority and Blacktown City Council.

“I am thrilled that Minister Scully has welcomed my proposal, as the local MP, to commence a local community engagement process so we can get cracking on developing ideas for a new Riverstone Town Centre Masterplan,” Mr Kirby said.

“This marks a pivotal moment for our community, and I am committed to working closely with the Minister, our residents and other stakeholders to develop a masterplan that revitalises our town centre.

“The aim is to create a thriving hub where people can live, work and enjoy all that Riverstone has to offer.”

Minister for Planning and Public Spaces, Paul Scully, welcomed Mr Kirby’s initiative.

He said community engagement will be a cornerstone of the new masterplan’s development.

“Warren Kirby, your local MP, is making sure that the voices and perspectives of Riverstone’s residents are heard and will be incorporated into this planning process,” Mr Scully said.

Mr Kirby said opportunities for the community to provide feedback began last month and would continue throughout 2024.

They will include workshops, surveys and public meetings.

The Riverstone Town Centre Masterplan will consider a range of critical factors including: • Anticipated growth in Riverstone’s population; • The evolving needs of the local community; • Opportunities for economic development and job creation; • Preserving and enhancing the town’s rich heritage; and • Ensuring the new Masterplan complies with current planning regulations.

“I wholeheartedly encourage all Riverstone residents and businesses to actively participate in the community engagement process that I am starting and contribute their valuable insights into shaping the future of our town cen-

Workers supports community consultation

ORKERS Lifestyle Group, which operates the Workers Blacktown and Workers Sports clubs, has welcomed the NSW Government’s decision to hold a community consultation as part of its review of the ClubGRANTS scheme.

Liquor and Gaming NSW has issued a discussion paper and asked for public feedback on ClubGRANTS to assist the government review of the

scheme, which supports vital local services and projects.

“We welcome the opportunity for stakeholders to have a say in the future of ClubGRANTS,” said Workers Lifestyle Group Chief Executive Officer Morgan Stewart.

“We will be making a submission that strongly advocates for retaining and improving the local community-based ClubGRANTS system.”

“We welcome Gaming and Racing Minister David Harris’ statement that registered clubs through ClubGRANTS help to provide vital local services, projects and infrastructure.

“But any program that hasn’t been reviewed for 10

years can be improved, so that more funding is available to community groups.”

In the year to August 31 2023, Workers Blacktown and Workers Sports contributed $962,748 through ClubGRANTS ($755,704 as cash grants and $207,044 as services and facilities) to 62 community, charity and sporting groups.

Tributes for Lang Walker AO

RIBUTES and condolences continue to flow for billionaire property developer and philanthropist Lang Walker AO, who built a property empire across Australia including Parramatta Square.

Mr Walker died last week aged 78 at his Woolloomooloo property.

Walker Corporation had recently announced an historic agreement with Blacktown City Council to redevelop Blacktown CBD. Late last year Blacktown Mayor, Tony Bleasdale welcomed a giant leap for Blacktown City in a shared vision that will transform Blacktown City.

Mayor Bleasdale said: “The future of the Blacktown CBD is now secure. This is our next significant step in the transformation of the City that will shape this region for generations to come.

“The CBD development by Walker Corporation will deliver over 1,000 construction jobs over five years in Blacktown city centre.”

City of Parramatta recognised the contribution and lasting legacy of Lang Walker AO. Mr Walker co-founded a small firm with his father six decades ago which went on to become Walker Corporation.

As head of Walker Corporation,

he helped develop places where others only saw challenges, including Broadway Shopping Centre, Woolloomooloo Wharf, King Street Wharf and the $3B Parramatta Square development which transformed Parramatta CBD. City of Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre Esber said: “Lang Walker understood the potential of Parramatta to be a major global city before most others.

“Parramatta Square is one of his many legacies to Parramatta and Western Sydney. This worldclass civic and commercial precinct is now home to more than 24,000 workers and is a magnet for government and industry leaders

to move their Sydney offices to Parramatta.

“I used to call him ‘Mr Nike’, because he had a way to ‘Just Do It’. That ability has left a lasting imprint on our City’s skyline. Our sincere condolences go to his wife Sue and his wider family.”

City’s outstanding citizens shine

SUPERSTAR fundraiser, a law student listed in Australia’s Top 100 Future Leaders, a staunch teen environmentalist and tireless organisers of annual seniors Christmas lunch were named in the coveted Blacktown City Australia Day Awards.

These outstanding citizens and a community organisation were awarded at a special ceremony on Friday, January 26 as part of Blacktown City’s official Australia Day celebrations.

The awards pay tribute to the outstanding work of local people in the wider Blacktown community nominated across four categories.

• President of Blacktown City Lions Club Rachael Hanlon – Citizen of the Year.

• Law clerk Ebony O’Connor - Young Citizen of the Year.

• Teenager Ariana Goanta Environmental Citizen of the Year.

• Blacktown City Rotary Club organisers of annual Seniors Christmas Lunch - Community Event of the Year.

Ms Hanlon is described as ‘the heart of Blacktown City Lions’ raising over $400,000 to support disadvantaged local people and delivered $500,000 worth of food donations.

This year, Ms Hanlon helped raise money to purchase a disability play equipment for a playground, a trained therapy puppy and wheelchair friendly outdoor furniture at a park.

The Plumpton Rural Fire Brigade was also supported by Ms Hanlon’s fundraising drive to obtain more than $30,000 worth of fire-fighting equipment.

“I want to say a big thank you to the people who work with me as you are only as good as your team and collectively, we are able to do so much for Blacktown’s residents,” Ms Hanlon said.

Ms O’Connor is a law clerk and award-winning student at Western Sydney University studying for her Bachelor of

International Studies and Bachelor of Laws.

She has been named in the Australian Financial Review’s Top 100 Future Leader, a former Blacktown City Council Youth Ambassador and former captain and dux of St. Andrews College in Marayong.

“It is our differences that make us whole and there is no place where this is more representative than Blacktown, a place that accepts all and judges none,” Ms O’Connor earlier said in a citizenship ceremony.

Ariana also runs a Facebook group educating people about our oceans, animals and ways to recycle and reuse materials instead of going into landfills.

The Rotary Club’s annual Seniors Christmas Lunch is a free long table event welcoming residents of nursing homes throughout the city in the past 15 years, recently hosting 280

seniors from 15 homes.

In this event, seniors enjoy a sumptuous Christmas lunch and receive gifts from the Rotary Club, entertainment by professional musicians as well as children from local schools.

Mayor Tony Bleasdale said “Blacktown City’s Australia Day Awards are the most sought-after and prestigious publicly recognised awards in our city.”

FTER ELIZAB AFTER a patriotic flag raising, a lively breakfast in the company of gazing wildlife homed at Featherdale Wildlife Park in Doonside kicked off Australia Day for Blacktown residents.

“What better way to start Australia Day than at Featherdale surrounded by our wonderful native animals and birds,” Blacktown City mayor Tony Bleasdale said.

“Featherdale is a well-loved and iconic attraction within our city.”

And so began a day of celebration in various venues that went right into the night at Rooty Hill with colourful fireworks in the state’s largest populated council which chose to keep January 26 as the nation’s day to celebrate what it is being an Australian.

Blacktown Council held their event despite calls by 81 other councils who did not celebrate theirs as part of the change the date campaign by the Indigenous community.

A concert was held at Rooty Hill prior to the fireworks display.

Thousands of people turned out for the alcohol-free, family-friendly event.

The fun-filled afternoon and evening featured live stage performances, amusements rides, food stalls, water games to cool off and a very popular circus workshop.

The concert was headlined with a great performance by the group Baby Animals after which Vtribe got the party going with a fabulous show in the afternoon.

The city’s celebration ended with bang as the sky lit up with the biggest fireworks display in Western Sydney.

Clr Bleasdale said, “I think this year was definitely the best [Australia Day in the Blacktown] ever.”

INCE the NSW Government mandated Taxi Fare Hotline stickers on all vehicles in September 2023, there has been a notable increase in refunds for passengers receiving unfair taxi fares. From November to January, there were 679 calls and 874 QR code scans compared to 473 and 97 in the previous year. Taxi companies issued 528 refunds in the last five months, comprising over half of all refunds since the hotline’s inception in November 2022. In the 2022-23 financial year, more than 68 million point-to-point trips were recorded in NSW, with 892 refunds issued since the Taxi Fare Hotline launch.

F you want to know the secret to a long and happy marriage you might want to ask Kevin and Patricia Sloane.

The Lalor Park couple will mark their 70th wedding anniversary on Tuesday, February 27 with a huge family celebration and a blessing from the Pope.

Daughter Kathryn Newman said her parents had always valued their church and their community and that had supported them through seven decades of married life.

Kevin Sloane and Patricia Boon knew each other as children through school, church and family associations.

“After school they reconnected via the Catholic Youth Organisation and started dating,” Kathryn recounts.

“They dated for about a year and then married on February 27, 1954 at St Patrick’s Church in Kogarah.

“My Dad proposed to my Mum while in the pool at Brighton Le Sands,” Kathryn said.

“They would meet at a corner in the city after work and catch the train home together.

“The first meal my Mum cooked for them when they

got married was rabbit. But unfortunately, she forgot to remove the innards and it was inedible.”

Eight children, 24 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren with two more expected in April.

As the years rolled on, they were blessed with five more children, bringing the total to eight: Mark in 1955, Timothy in 1957, Jeffrey in 1958, Judith in 1960, Paula in 1962, Claire in 1965, Kathryn in 1967 and Bernard in 1971.

Their brood continued to expand as the grandchildren came along. There are 24 in total, along with18 great grand children with two more expected in April.

Kevin worked as an accountant, finishing his career as treasurer of Baulkham Hills Shire Council.

Before the couple married Patricia worked as a comptometrist.

Then as a proud stay at home Mum, she was heavily involved in the children’s primary school - St Bernadette’s Lalor Park – as well as sport and the Church.

The couple played social tennis for many years and still enjoy watching it on TV. They enjoyed dancing and both were involved in the schools Parents and Friends Association.

Even today they continue to play card games such as Cribbage and Euchre with family and friends.

So back to that question.

What is the secret to a long and happy marriage?

“Commitment shared Catholic values, a good friendship and a community support system,” says daughter Kathryn.

Focus on community “My Mum is a Life Member of St Bernadette’s Netball Club where she was treasurer for many years and my Dad joined the St Vincent de Paul St Bernadette’s Conference in 1961 and has been an office holder for 63 years.

“He received the Public Service Medal in 1995 for Outstanding Service to Local Government.

“Both my parents feel fortunate to have lived in Lalor Park for 65 years.

“They were very focused on the new community that they were a part of so many years ago and formed many lasting friendships with the other families in the parish.

“They love their family very much and are, in turn, loved and supported by them. It’s what keeps them going.

“Their grandchildren and great grandchildren are a big part of their lives. They were nicknamed ‘G’dawgs’ by their grandkids and always have plenty of visitors in their home.”

OUBLE amputee Dwayne Fernandes, 38, was born without his fibulas and some toes and fingers, which affects his balance.

Before he was 3 years old, he had five surgeries and at age 11, Dwayne decided to replace his legs with prosthetic limbs.

Dwayne receives disability supports from the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), which help him to live his life in Western Sydney.

“I’m a high-energy amputee so I need good technology behind my prosthetic legs to get the most out of them. The prosthetic legs the NDIS funds mimics anyone else’s legs – I can walk up a hill, or I can run around with my five-year-old daughter,” Dwayne said.

Dwayne also uses his NDIS plan to access support to build on his mobility and strength.

“I’m all about mobility. I know eventually I will use a wheelchair in the future, so I want to maximise every opportunity I have.”

Dwayne describes himself as a double amputee, world record holding tower climber, husband and father of two.

But Dwayne is also one third of the brains behind Minds at Play, a Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) online program to teach young people who live with a disability how to communicate and socialise.

Dwayne’s love for D&D began eight years ago when he needed an outlet for some stress in his life.

“My godchild has autism and I wondered if D&D would help give him the tools to engage in social situations while playing a game. I did some research and found there’s lots of benefits of playing D&D for people with autism,” Dwayne said.

Running the first D&D session online in June 2020, Dwayne and his business part-

ners, Dan Papallo and Jeff Ozog had no idea starting their side business in the middle of a pandemic would have a silver lining.

“We started with 4 players, now we have over 530, and 40 employees,” Dwayne said.

“Part of our initial success was because of COVID. We played online and our players never left their safe space which meant they were open to trying more things.”

Ruth Jansen’s son Jacob has autism and is among many kids who have benefitted from Minds at Play.

“It was beneficial having Jacob involved with such engaging personalities. Dwayne does a fantastic job of creating teams of kids with their various strengths and abilities,” Ruth said.

“Jacob learned how to listen to the input of others and how to work with his team to achieve outcomes.

“Social skills and boundaries are one of the greatest hurdles for Jacob and that safe environment helped him develop those skills, which will help him in the long run.”

Progress like Jacob’s is why Dwayne is excited to watch Minds at Play grow and diversify.

Their sessions are growing more popular and new programs are adding value to the autistic community.

“At Minds at Play, anyone can come play, learn and make some new friends,” Dwayne said.

Path to greater independence

HE NDIS provides funding to eligible people with disability to gain more time with family and friends, greater independence, access to new skills, jobs, or volunteering in their community, and an improved quality of life.

The NDIS also connects anyone with disability to services in their community.

This may include connections to doctors, community groups, sporting clubs, support groups, libraries and schools, as well as providing information about what support is provided by state government.

The NDIS supports over 500,000 Australians with disability to access the services and supports they need.

This includes supporting about 80,000 children with developmental delay, ensuring they receive supports early so that they achieve the best outcomes throughout their lives.

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) The NDIA makes decisions about whether someone is eligible to become a NDIS participant and, if so, how much funding they will receive.

N 2017, Kylie Crambrook started Mypower Foundations as a sole trader to assist people with disabilities residing in the Blue Mountains.

She quickly discovered that the enormity of services local people with disabilities sought was some-

N 2024, my top priority is continuing our work to ease the cost-of-living crisis impacting local families in North-West Sydney.

We have delivered responsible and meaningful support for Australian families including more affordable childcare, fee-free TAFE, and cheaper medicines.

For the nearly 140,000 TAFE and vocational education students in Greater Sydney, our investments in TAFE and apprentices have also come into effect. This means more TAFE places, better learning environments, and more qualified graduates.

We are also giving access to up to $10,000 in financial support to apprentices in need, making it easier to get the tools you need to work and learn your trade.

We’re getting wages moving again, provided targeted relief to deal with rising energy prices, and expanded paid parental leave to boost economic participation for new parents.

Whilst many students can access the internet at school, connecting at home to support remote learning and homework can be a serious challenge.

HE Global Remote Work Index, has revealed what it takes to be a top country when considering a remote working destination.

Turns out the Netherlands, Germany, and Denmark lead the list. However, daydreaming about a winter escape and jumping straight into summer does not necessarily have to be a fantasy.

Growth of the digital nomad and workation concept Workations (work+vacation) are steadily growing in popularity. According to research, 93% of workers worldwide say they want the flexibility to choose where and when they work. Google searches for the term “workation” worldwide reached an all-time high in the last week of August 2023.

Regarding digital nomadism, such lifestyles continue to gain popularity despite the growing global office mandate.

Infrastructure is the best in Australia In the GRWI, Australia is number 25 and ranks six places lower than last year’s data. The nation excels in digital and physical infrastructure (18), includ-

• Think before connecting.

Avoid using public Wi-Fi without a trustworthy VPN app, and avoid plugging in any devices — be it a USB flash drive on your desk or a public charging station — to your device.

• Take care of your device. Do not leave your working computer unattended. Always lock it and use secure passwords.

URFING sounds fun but learning can be daunting, particularly upgrading from a safe foam board (foamie) to the traditional fibreglass surfboard.

To master standing on a fibreglass board can be very rewarding and that feeling of standing on a wave is noted as one of life’s finer moments.

“You are not ready for a fibreglass board, unless you can transfer from your belly to your feet on a foamie.

If getting a fibreglass board for the first time after using a foamie, don’t get something thin or narrow, stick closely to the dimensions of your foamie.

If learning to surf is on your bucket list and you’d like to skip the foamy surfboard stage, be cautious when walking into a secondhand shop for the first time

as you can get it really wrong. “You have to be honest with your ability and give them your correct weight and height.

If you’re 95 kg, but you think you’ll lose some weight and get to 90 in summer just tell them you’re 95 kg”.

Day out in the Southern Highlands

HE train is loud in Bundanoon and has been for 150 years. It’s a sweet town if you haven’t popped in for a while and worth a visit. Bundanoon’s highlights can be visited in one day if you don’t want to spend a night but it’s a lovely town to take your time and enjoy the sights of local gardens.

Suggested itinerary: Start with breakfast or brunch in Bundanoon and meals and cafe at the Morton Cafe served all day are great. There are several cafes down the main street (opposite the train station). Catching a train is a great alternative to driving. It does take longer but pops you straight out on the main drag with shops, cafes and restaurants.

Enjoy the original and historical building facades, walk north along Railway avenue and find little boutiques or plan your trip for the

artisan Makers market, 1st Sunday of the month at Bundanoon public school or 3rd Sunday of the month at the Soldiers Memorial hall Bundanoon is the gateway to the Morton National Park. There are a couple of nice day walks here, bring a picnic lunch, sunscreen, proper footwear for walking and some water, there’s an IGA in the main street to get food and snacks.

Head to the Bundanoon pub with its beer garden out the back after your walk, and if you’re staying until nightfall, bring a torch for the walk down into the valley to see the famous glow worms that make their home in this area. Entry is via William St. Thai dinner at Little Jacks Style 12 noon 9.30pm Tues-Sun is very good or pop into Sally’s Corner wine to purchase mementos of the area on your way home if driving. Open Sat- Sun 10.30am - 4.30pm.

3. Maintenance Team Find the funds to do a full

Australian standards compliance check. Not only is it a good thing to do, but accessible travel is also a big growing sector so you’re sure to make back in new business whatever funds you outlay.

ARRISTA Matt Hargreaves’ recipe of that aromatic coffee that regular customers come back daily for has been part of his business dream since teenage years.

“It’s a style of blend you can’t fault,” the 32-year-old self-taught entrepreneur said when asked what makes his cafe at Marsden Park’s HomeCo shopping centre a popular one for coffee lovers.

As many as 3,000 cups branded with the signature the Baristas’ Shed logo fly out his caf? from morning opening till afternoon closing time each week.

It surely is a load of perfect brews to prepare for customers in a hurry, along with an array of tempting recipes, sandwiches and salads, for the hardworking staff.

“It’s a flavoursome blend of rich coffee, caramelised, fruity and nutty, milky with chocolate in 100 percent arabica that I roast every week,” said Matt.

“I’ve kept the same blend of coffee I’ve been serving my customers for five years now.”

From age 14, Matt worked after-school at KFC and restaurants around the Hills district.

While on these jobs, and while a student at Northholm Grammar School, he said he taste-tested various coffee blends, and that’s when he had set his future dream to open his own caf? and create his own coffee blend.

“I’ve experimented different blends to see what people really like and what they don’t like. Then I sat down with a coffee roaster and tested at least 200 blends I’ve made over months to come up with the final product we serve today,” he said.

During the pandemic, when trade slowed down and working from home became the norm of his customers, Matt created a lockdown menu with his coffee blend created in a teamwork with the Black Drum Roasters.

At the same time, he and the roasters began brewing the Baristas’ Shed blend into a kilo pack of ready to brew coffee on wholesale for customers to take home and make themselves for their daily coffee fix if they can’t pop in at his caf?.

T

he NSW 2024 NPL 1 season is only three weeks away and Blacktown City FC is determined to continue their hot streak that finished off the 2023 season.

After numerous injuries early in the season, Coach Mark Crittenden’s men found the groove to play the last 12 games of the season without a loss.

Chasing League Leaders Apia Leichhardt down the stretch, Apia held out for Premiership honors as Football NSW had ruled not to have a playoff structure to finish the season.

That decision has been changed and the Men’s NPL 1 competition, as in all other years, will now have playoffs with the top four teams qualifying.

Blacktown Senior Men’s 2024 campaign will start on Saturday, February 17 at Landen Stadium.

The opponent for Blacktown City will be the 2023 Premiers Apia Leichhardt in what has built as a Blockbuster start to the season.

Game time for the Senior Men has been altered to 7:30pm with the Under 20’s to play at 5:30pm.

Head of Football, Mark Crittenden, has assembled a squad capable of duplicating his 2022 Championship with the nucleus still intact from that season.

Defensive stalwarts, Grant Lynch, Lachlan Campbell, Ben Berry and Nick O’Brien will anchor the back line.

To date in pre-season form they have been stingy in their defense and Tristan Prendergast in goal has shown once again to be one of the best goalies in the competition.

The retirement of Captain Matt Lewis will point to the winner of the 2023 Matt Lewis Medal, Mario Shabow, as his replacement.

Mario has been a standout for Blacktown City and his relationship with Head Coach Crittenden is special.

Joining Mario for the 2024 season will be former Blacktown City players, Joey Gibbs and Jacob Maniti, who have been playing overseas.

Coach Crittenden has also recruited Marty Fenandez from Marconi and Jayden Tremkoski from Sydney FC. Exciting news for the club is that Danny Choi and Mitch Mallia will be returning from season ending injuries in 2023 to suit up for Blacktown’s best once again.

structure and game plan is positive. Adding Mitch Mallia and Danny Choi after season ending injuries last year is a huge plus and we have already seen their influence in pre-season games this year,” he said.

“A few new recruits will provide plenty of back up but will make my decision making for the first eleven a difficult task each week.”

Blacktown City will be putting the 2024 team on show Wednesday, February 8, at Landen Stadium. All

The Senior women will be entering their third season of NPL 2 competition. Their season starts in March and will be under new Head Coach Michael Hawthorne.

Coach Hawthorne has also been in training since November. He has taken on his new role and is determined to build his squad to achieve the goal of Blacktown City FC to elevate the Women’s program to NPL 1 level withing three years.

To help achieve that BCFC is instituting in 2024 the City FC Academy.

The Academy is a major pathway extension for all Blacktown City development programs such as the Momento Grass Roots Training program and BCFC schools program.

It will cater for girls 8-13 on a Thursday night and boys 13-16 on a Tuesday evening.

“The City FC Academy is designed to create a better pathway for our Junior players.

In particular, the Academy is to attract young women in the Blacktown area to bolster our young Women’s program,” said Mark Crittenden.

Landen Stadium will be the scene of football fever as Blacktown City FC continue to build a presence and following for the city they represent. All home games are played at Landen Stadium, 5 Quinn Avenue, Seven Hills.

The Blacktown City FC family was saddened to hear of the passing of legendary community builder, Lang Walker, this past week.

The clubs principal partner, Walker Corporation has been built over a number of years by a man who has exuded vision beyond comparison.

Finger Wharf at Woolloomooloo, Broadway Shopping Centre, Rhodes and Parramatta Square are only but a few of the many transformation projects led by Lang.

Next on his list is Blacktown to redevelop the city centre in the same fashion as Parramatta Square.

While Lang may not now physically lead the charge, the culture he has instilled into his organisation will fulfill his dream to make the city centre of Blacktown the envy of major cities.

Local gym delivers flipping results

THLETES from the Sydney Gymnastic and Aquatic Centre (SGAC) at West HQ recently returned home from the FIG Trampoline World Championships, with one athlete returning a world age champion and another six being in the top 10 in the world.

In total, 11 gymnasts from the SGAC qualified to represent Australia at the 10-day event that encapsulated the Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships, World Age Competitions and Junior World Championships held in Birmingham, United Kingdom in November.

West HQ Chief Executive Officer Richard Errington said the SGAC athletes’ tremendous performance demonstrated the value of West HQ’s decision to fund and build one of the most extensive purpose-built gymnastics facilities in the southern hemisphere.

“This tops off a great 1oth anniversary of a facility we built to not only support stars of the future, like our representatives at the recent Worlds, but also to promote healthy and active lifestyles for those in our community,” Mr Errington said.

In the Trampoline Gymnastics World Championships, Troy Sitkowski, who in addition to training at the facility is employed by West HQ as an SGAC coach, placed 15th in the world for individual Double Mini Trampoline and seventh in the Men’s Team Double Mini with Benjamin Brown (Canberra), Mathew French (TAS) and Cameron Tidd (VIC).

The Razorback resident was part of the ten-person Australian team that came fourth in the worlds’ Team All-Around event, along with his co-worker and fellow gymnast Imogen Florian, who placed 27th in the individual event, seventh in the women’s Synchronised competition with partner Carina Hagarty (Qld), and 11th in the Women’s Team with Carina, Jessica Pickering (Newcastle, NSW) and Abbie Watts (SA).

Both Troy and Imogen, who live at Dural, will now be part of the Australian team at the 2025 World Games in Chengdu, China, to face off against the other top 7 nations in the events in Trampoline that are not in the Olympics.
