Apex Entertainment Center

Marlborough destination offers fun for all ages

By Bonnie Adams, Managing Editor Marlborough – Located on Boston Post Road (Route 20), near the Northborough border, the Apex Center of New England sits on over 40 acres, and offers a mix of retail, office space, restaurants and hotels, along with the 170,000 square foot custom-designed Apex Entertainment Center. The development was built by entrepreneur Robert Walker, the owner of Westford-based RAVentures. Conveniently located near major highways, the development includes 12 high-profile buildings, for a total of 500,000 square feet, features two hotels (Hyatt Place and Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott), eight restaurants (including a new prototype Friendly’s with a Drive-Thru), 60,000 square feet of retail stores, and a 45,000 square foot office building. The APEX Entertainment Center, open since late December, has already become a popular part of the development, with a multitude of exciting options under one roof. “We aimed to create something unique, with activities for everyone in the family to enjoy – a true destination,” said Jeff White, an asset manager with RA Ventures. The entertainment center offers 24 luxury 10-pin bowling lanes, along with 6 Candlepin Jeff White lanes, all featuring a high-end electronic scoring system. Visitors enjoy major sporting events projected on 24’ screens with surround sound music entertainment and lane service. Eight of the lanes and a designated bar are also available in the “Grand Prix” room, which can be rented for private parties and special events. “We are looking to add leagues in the near future,” said Marcus Kemblowski, Apex Entertainment Center’s General Manager. On the IC Federal Credit Union Speedway, those seeking a “need for speed” can do so in one of the 26 electric Sodi RTX Karts on the multi-level indoor go kart track. Four sports simulators offer an array of choices including golf, hockey, soccer, football, baseball, cricket, and even zombie dodgeball. A two-story, high-tech, laser tag arena, featuring a Bostontheme tests guests hiding skills while incorporating interactive computer and laser technology.

Shrewsbury Farmers Market looks forward to fifth season By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter

PHOTOS/SUBMITTED

Shrewsbury – The Shrewsbury Farmers Market is gearing up for its fifth season. Located in the parking lot of the Shrewsbury Senior Center, 100 Maple Ave., the market will open Wednesday, June 13, and run every Wednesday from 2:30 – 6:30 p.m. through September 26, rain or shine. It will be closed Wednesday, July 4. Founder Melissa Hollenback is working on some new initiatives for this year. With the Council on Aging, she plans to offer a program on cooking and nutrition, focusing on fresh and local foods. She also hopes to be able to purchase wheeled baskets for patrons to use while shopping, but reminds people to bring their own bags. In addition to fresh, local produce, people can also look forward to internationally themed events, a popular bee scavenger hunt for kids, honey, Asian produce, eggs, maple syrup, meats, handcrafted products, artisanal specialty foods, baked goods, jewelry, skincare products and so much more. Hollenback had long been a proponent of farmers markets, when she took a class offered by the Massachusetts Farmers Markets Association. A committee was formed and the Shrewsbury Farmers Market set

up shop at Ski Ward during their off season. They were there for three years but there were problems. “It wasn’t their fault; it was just geography. It’s very rocky,” Hollenback explained. The terrain proved difficult for people with strollers, toddlers, senior citizens and those with mobility difficulties. To make the market more inclusive they needed to move. They had difficulties finding a suitable location that met town bylaw requirements and had suitable parking and visibility. Selectmen and then Town Manager Dan

Morgado offered the parking lot at the Senior Center. Due to bylaw restrictions it had to go before Town Meeting. Surprisingly, there was quite a bit of concern over parking and potential conflicts with activities at the Senior Center. It was uncharted territory. Ultimately, Town Meeting did give approval as did the Zoning Board. In the end, the reception was very positive and people were quite happy with the new location. The surface is smooth, there is bathroom accessibility, it’s partially shaded, and it is centrally located making it more accessible and part of the community. “I look at this as a business, we are insured, all of our farmers and the food vendors are insured, and we have very clear rules about what they can and can’t do…we are probably the most regulated farmers m around,” shared Hollenback. “We are looking forward to an exciting season and it will be bigger than last year.” The Shrewsbury Farmers Market is coordinated by SELCO, Shrewsbury Parks & Recreation and the Council on Aging. miles of smiles Northborough trails provide recreation for hikers and walkers By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter Northborough – Northborough offers hikers and walkers well over 40 miles of trails that are open from dawn to dusk. Within this network, there is something for everyone at all skill levels with a variety of terrains. “Longtime Northborough resident Arthur Cole said that a lot of the existing trails were in places where farmworkers would walk from one farm to another and cut through the wetlands and the rocky areas and the forests where you couldn’t plant anything,” said Bob Mihalek, Trails Committee chair. “Cole then, as he got older and retired, wanted to mark these trails that were no longer in service to the farmers

and have them recognized on an official level for the town so that the people could use them” he continued. The idea for a Trails Committee was then launched and it was established through the Open Space Committee as a subcommittee which would report to the committee at their business meetings. Now they have their own meetings. The town’s 11 trails encompass a variety of landscapes from wooded forest and scenic vistas to wetlands and trails formed on glacial Lake Assabet. Mt. Pisgah Trails boast a view of Boston on a clear day. There’s the Edmund Hill Woods Trails that features steep slopes and vernal pools. For the wetland lovers there’s Little Chauncy and Cedar Hill Trails with a boardwalk

through a wet meadow, and one can enjoy Watson Park Trails with views of Bartlett Pond and fields that form a habitat for bluebirds and a butterfly garden. A favorite area for dog owners is Carney Park/Cold Harbor Trail with beautiful views of the watershed area and the Cold Harbor Trail winding its way. “I love to see dogs on the trail and for them to get out

and get some exercise,” said Mihalek, adding that the trails are part of the town and the town’s leash law is in effect at all times. Those with dogs are also expected to clean up after their pets. Other trails include Carlstrom II Forest, Yellick Conservation Area, Stirrup Brook Trail, Assabet Park Trail, Green Acres Trails and the MWRA Aqueduct Recreational Trails.

The all-volunteer Trails Committee is charged with maintaining the existing trails. With over 40 miles of there is always something that needs to be done such as clearing downed trees and trimming and cutting grass. Mihalek credited local Boy Scouts who have been instrumental in helping with maintenance as they earn their service hours and as individual Trails page 7

Hidden gems Shrewsbury’s trails just waiting to be explored

ByMelanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter Shrewsbury – Shrewsbury has many different sizes and types of trails – something for everyone, according to Melanie Magee, chair of the Shrewsbury Trails Committee. The bulk of the trails can be found within four primary areas: Prospect Park, Lake Street Park, Carlstrom For-

est and Camp Wunnegan. Other paths include Jordan Pond, Dean Park, Hills Farm Pond, Spring Street School and Shrewsbury High School. Shrewsbury’s trails are spread out across 475 acres of land and provide over 10 miles of hiking and walking paths. Some paths are paved for easy strolling and others are more rugged with natural terrain. While Prospect Park has

the most trails, “one of our favorites is Lake Street Park and has a lot of nice walking areas too with water, wildlife and open meadow,” Magee stated. Off of Gulf Street one can access the Carlstrom Forest Trails that encompass 153 acres of wooded land, meadows and wetlands and is owned by the New England Forestry Foundation.

Camp Wunnegan is a former Girl Scout camp with really nice trail, according to committee member Lon Maletta. It has wonderful rock formations and cliffs. Regarding trails rules: “I don’t think we have any official [rules] but on Carlstrom no motorized vehicles,” stated committee member Martha Maletta. Dogs are also welcome as long as they are on leash.

“Other than the normal good manners that you’d expect of a person in a park, I don’t think there is anything specific,” Magee said. The town website has a page for the Trails Committee and you can find maps and where the trails are located at https://shrewsburyma.gov/ DocumentCenter/View/329. “We try to do six guided Trails page 9

walks a year, and that includes two moon walks and a couple of themed walks,” Magee relayed. When asked about summer activities, Magee said, “Our usual thing is maintenance in the summer and we tend to cluster our events in the spring and fall, although we are open to other things.” “I guess the thing is that the summer is a good time for trail work and we as a committee are open to having people who want to volunteer to come and help with the trail work,” stated Lon. Several groups have provided assistance in the past such as church groups and the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts.. The Shrewsbury Trails Committee is an all-volunteer group which was formed in 2011 in response to a survey circulated to assess residents’ thoughts regarding recreational activities per the Town’s Open Space Plan.

Westborough – The Willows at Westborough 2018 free Summer Concert Series begins Wednesday, June 13 at 7 p.m. An annual tradition, the weekly concerts sponsored by SALMON Health and Retirement will be held in The Willows’Rose Garden Courtyard at the corner of Route 30 and Lyman Street. Area residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets. Free parking is available across the street at the Elsie A. Hastings Elementary School lot. All concerts are free of charge, open Residents and visitors enjoy a 2017 concert to the public and families are welcome. Pets should be left at home. Concerts begin at 7 p.m. sharp, and feature performances by well-known area musical groups. Note: in case of rain, inside seating is reserved for Willows residents and their guests exclusively. As in years past, refreshments will be available for purchase at the concerts and donations will be accepted to support a variety of nonprofit organizations in the Westborough area. The 2018 Concert Series will run Wednesday evenings through August 8. PHOTO/SUBMITTED

“Apparently, they were looking for places to walk and it was evident that there were a lot of places to walk, but people just didn’t know about them,” said Martha, who added that the committee was charged with the purpose of identifying, promoting, improving and expanding the trails. The Town’s Planning, Parks & Recreation, and Engineering Departments are supportive of this committee which meets at Shrewsbury Town Hall, every other month on the second Wednesday at 7 p.m. The committee is also always looking for new members, volunteers and experts to lead walks. Chestnut Hil Farm

Southborough - There are now signs of spring - kids, seedlings and tractor tracks - at the Chesnut Hill Farm in Southborough. The farm will offer a number of educational and recreational opportunities for visitors this summer. There is also a small seasonal farm stand that features local honey from the farm’s beehives along with vegetables and fruits. Community-supported agriculture (CSA) shares are now available. The farm has two miles of trails for easy walking. Dog walking, horseback riding, motorized vehicles and mountain biking are not permitted on the property. The farm is located at Chestnut Hill Road and is open yearround, daily from sunrise to sunset. For more information visit http://www.thetrustees.org/places-to-visit/greater-boston/ chestnut-hill-farm.html.

Grafton - Grafton Girl Scout Troop 30222 is hosting a fair on the Grafton Common Saturday, June 9, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. with displays, crafts and activities about three endangered local species: honeybees, Monarch butterflies and indigenous turtles. The fair will help fulfill one of the necessary requirements for 10 of the girls in the troop to achieve a silver award. The troop, led by Colleen Nash and Angela Hogue, includes 10 cadettes and one junior. The free fair will help the public learn how to help save

these endangered species by providing food sources for bees and Monarchs and to help preserve and enhance the three species’ habitats. The event will feature tabletop displays, face painting, craft tables, bee hives, masks for photo booth opportunities and seed planting. Giveaway items will include tote bags with various items, Milkweed seedlings and popcorn. Representatives from the Mass Audubon Broad Meadow Brook Conservation Center & W ild life Sanctuary, Mass Audubon

Wachusett Meadow Wildlife Sanctuary, Massachusetts Bee Keepers Association, Massachusetts Wildlife & Fisheries, and the Turtle Rescue League will be on hand to answer questions and provide additional conservation information. Boy Scout Troop 107, Girl Scout Troop 30261 and the Grafton Recreation Department are helping with the fair along with parent volunteers. The Baptist Church and Congregational Church of Grafton are supplying tables and chairs.

Consider adding a Bluebird house to your yard this summer

Trombetta’s Farm Mini-golf, ice cream and garden center 655 Farm Road, Marlborough 508-485-6429 www.trombettasfarm.com

Region - Eastern Bluebirds are all around our area, nesting in our backyards, fields and meadows. The male Bluebirds have beautiful blue plumage with an orange and white chest, while the females have a less vibrant color. They love to nest in cavities such as wooden bluebird houses in open areas, and especially close to gardens that have an ample supply of insects. Bluebirds are ground feeders – you can often see them drop down out of the sky to catch an insect. They also enjoy dried mealworms, grubs, and raisins that have been soaked in water. You may see them eat other berries and seed from a feeder during the fall months. The Bluebird population had been on the decline, due to the loss of their natural habitat and competition from sparrows and other small birds. However, thanks to the proliferation of Bluebird houses being placed in their preferred areas, the numbers are back on the rise. A fun summer project for families is to add a Bluebird house or two in your area. You can find Bluebird specific houses at your local gardening centers. And don’t forget the mealworms! For more information visit www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Eastern_Bluebird/ overview.
