T
he Spirit of Shrewsbury Fall Festival truly is about community. It’s about bringing people together, and sharing what makes Shrewsbury a very special place to live, work and raise a family. The festival celebrates Shrewsbury’s diverse culture and history. It’s in this spirit that the festival’s board members wanted to really make a difference – to help others in need.
When one festival ends, the planning for the next year starts almost right away. The board has been working hard to put together a great fall festival that includes many of the fans’ favorites, as well as something new! As the saying goes, “many hands make light work.” The festival planning members are truly grateful for the help of community groups, teens, college students and anyone who has contributed to making the festival the very best that it can be. It keeps getting bigger and better every year! President Frances Carvalho says that there is something for everyone. Local businesses, community groups and organizations are able to showcase their work. Shrewsbury’s many cultures, as well as a variety of delicious food and several musical groups will be showcased.

SHREWSBURY PUBLIC LIBRARY: PUPPET BAND September 27 @ 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm Shrewsbury Public Library 609 Main Street, Shrewsbury - FREE Formed in 2000, the Toe Jam Puppet Band offers a special brand of hands-on children’s entertainment that grown-ups can actually enjoy. The dynamic group is great with kids, but best when parents are having fun with the little ones. The performances are very active, encouraging kids and parents to sing and dance along with the band as they entertain with a unique combination of original songs, masterful shadow puppetry, storytelling and just plain old good fun. SPIRIT OF SHREWSBURY PARADE September 29 @ 1:00 pm Maple Ave. to Oak Middle School The Spirit of Shrewsbury Parade historically started as a victorious celebration of the SHS sports and alumni Homecoming weekend. Over 20 years later this fun event hosts over 50 groups, an over 90 Elders Viewing Tent, and can be seen on TV. GRAND MARSHAL MICHAEL PERNA JR., SHREWSBURY TOWN HISTORIAN
In the early 1980s, I became interested in Civil War history, which was a natural progression due to an interest in all things military starting at a young age. After a number of years spent researching and collecting Civil War material, I began to wonder what part Shrewsbury and its residents played in the war. A few years later, the Civil War Round Table of Central MA published my research in a booklet entitled “Shrewsbury in the Civil War” (1986). Within a few more years, I had become very involved in the Shrewsbury Historical Society. At that time, the society hosted an annual antique show and sale, with society members helping to sell tickets, set up vendor’s booths and so on. At one of these sales, I stopped by the booth of society member Harry Cutting. He had a single antique postcard for sale, showing the “old” Town Hall on it. I had never seen anything like this! I inquired about it and he said, “Oh, there are lots of those type postcards around. You should talk to (another society member) Warren Higgins – he collects them and knows where to get them.”

The rest, as the saying goes… is history! That one card led to 30+ years of collecting Shrewsbury and Lake Quinsigamond artifacts and associated research, which continues to this day. — Michael Perna Jr.
About Michael Michael Perna Jr. is a life-long resident of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts and a 1968 graduate of Shrewsbury High School. He retired from the Massachusetts Air National Guard in July 2004 as a Senior Master Sergeant with thirty-six years of service. He was a member of the 212th Engineering Installation Squadron, based in Worcester and later Milford, serving as the unit’s First Sergeant for twelve years. Since 2004, he has served as the Chief of the Military Records Branch for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, which is located in Milford, MA where he is responsible for oversight and processing of all Massachusetts veteran’s records from World War II to the present. Michael is an avid historian, researching material dealing with both Shrewsbury and Lake Quinsigamond. He has written five books: “Shrewsbury in the Civil War” (1986), “Remembering Lake Quinsigamond – From Steamboats to White City,” (Chandler House Press, Worcester, MA – 1998) and the Arcadia books “Shrewsbury” (2001), “Lake Quinsigamond and White City Park” (2005) and “Shrewsbury Through Time” (2014). He is married and has two children and four grandchildren. Michael is a past president, director, and assistant curator of the Shrewsbury Historical Society. He was a member of the town of Shrewsbury’s Historic District Commission for 20 years and is currently a member of the Shrewsbury Historical Commission. He was appointed as Shrewsbury Town Historian in 2017, and is
currently completing work on a sixth book – “Shrewsbury Through Time – Volume II” – along with his grandchildren, which should be published in the Fall of 2019.

Decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster and Air Force Achievement Medal with three oak leaf clusters.

Served on Hist Dist Comm for 20 years; currently member of Historical Comm. Wrote over 1,000 local history articles over 20 years for the Shrewsbury Chronicle. Currently local history columnist for the Community Advocate newspaper.

Newest book, “Shrewsbury Through Time – Volume II” was written with help of Grandchildren! Recently appeared on Channel 5’s “Chronicle” TV program where spoke about the history of the Edgemere Drive-In.

Contributed photographs/information for the interpretive history panels on the new Burns Bridge and also the “history walls” at the new Shrewsbury Public Library.

Has served as the town’s Veteran’s Agent since 2013.
