Ryan Ferarra, Thomas Gregory and Nina Nazarian each applied to succeed retiring chief administrator Tom Moses. After navigating a multi-tiered screening process, they’ll soon make their cases to the Select Board itself in a public meeting.

“We obviously went through a process to arrive at the point that we are at today,” Select Board Member and Search Committee Chair John Parent said, March 8, before a consultant announced finalists’ names. “Each of these candidates is very highly qualified.”

WESTBOROUGH - When three longtime members of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Westborough put their heads together to determine how the church could raise funds for miscellaneous projects and support the Westborough community, the Elite Repeats Thrift Shop was reborn.

Diane Barrette, Nancy Carlson and Peggy Yankee agreed that reviving the church’s thrift shop would be a wonderful way to engage the congregation and the community at large, according to Carlson. Elite Repeat sells “gently used items at an appealing price.” However, Carlson said that for individuals and families in “dire straits, we don’t charge them.”

Although the thrift shop has been open since December, donations started coming in last summer. The trio has combed through every item and sorted, organized and priced them. Situated in the church’s basement, shoppers can find clothing, jewelry, household items, furniture, cribs, lamps and more.

Brunello di Montalcino

runello di Montalcino is considered the crown jewel of Italian red wine and has been produced in the vineyards around Montalcino, in the Tuscany wine region, since the 15th century. Montalcino has a warm and dry climate, with the grapes ripening earlier than in other regions. Brunello is made with 100 percent Sangiovese grapes that are known for having thicker skins. This helps produce bold, fruity, spicy, and earthy notes with high tannin and high acidity. The wine is aged in oak casks for at least three years.

Brunello is a perfect accompaniment to a variety of dishes. Red meat tends to bring out the fruity flavors, while Tuscan tomato dishes bring out the herbaceous qualities.

Brunello di Montalcino is an impressive wine to include in a collection and often requires several years for the tannins to soften and the flavors to develop complexity. With 10 or more years of age, Brunello drops the fresh fruit flavors to reveal sweeter notes of dried figs, candied cherries, and hazelnuts. The tannins turn chocolaty and the acidity is succulent.

Hudson names finalists for executive assistant job Finalists | from page 1

Candidates boast backgrounds in municipal admin Ferarra is currently the town administrator in Boxborough.

He’s held that position since 2018 and now seeks Hudson’s top job as a next step in a more than 25-year career.

Before working in Boxborough, Ferrara had climbed from a role at the Massachusetts Water Resource Authority’s Advisory Board to municipal jobs in Newton and Middleton.

Gregory, like Ferarra, started his most recent job in 2018.

He’s the town administrator for Spencer, MA Before that gig, he worked locally as an assistant town administrator in Shrewsbury.

Nazarian, meanwhile, currently works in the Office of Special Projects in Medford.

She started her career as a civil engineer in Melrose before then working for the Tewksbury Department of Public

Works. She’s most recently held town administrator jobs in Tyngsborough, Princeton and Littleton.

Announcement marks step in complicated search The Executive Assistant Search Committee started meeting last year and quickly received 33 applications. After eliminating “unqualified” applicants, the Search Committee was left with 17 names before it.

According to Parent, they eventually narrowed that list down to seven individuals.

Interviews with those candidates subsequently helped build consensus to nominate Ferarra, Gregory and Nazarian as finalists.

“It’s not an easy process, I’m sure,” Select Board Member Scott Duplisea said, recognizing the work of his municipal colleagues.

With deliberations taking place, this complicated process

has not been without its hiccups.

Back in November of last year, residents criticized the Select Board for what they saw as a rushed process of actually forming the Search Committee. Beth Langlois and Shawna Weston specifically said they felt locked out of a process they wished they could have participated in as civically engaged Hudson residents.

Local groups get funding for arts/education efforts, armory acquisition

“The pandemic has underscored the value of cultural programming and help[ed] us realize the importance that art, music, and other cultural and

educational offerings have in our lives,” State Representative Kate Hogan said in a press release, Feb. 23. “We now, more than ever, long for the social, emotional and other connections these experiences provide.”

The Hudson Cultural Council is a local organization operating under the umbrella of

Hudson’s residency requirement for Executive Assistants could discourage quality candidates.

Hudson is in the process of trying to erase its residency requirement through a Town Meeting vote and an act of the State Legislature.

More immediately, the Select Board plans to conduct public interviews with Ferarra, Gregory and Nazarian on March 16 at 5:30pm, making a hiring decision later in the spring.

the statewide Massachusetts Cultural Council (MCC).

Each year, the MCC allocates millions of dollars in grant money to then hand off to local Cultural Councils for distribution.

Some of this year’s Hudson grant winners have snagged funding before. Others, like the Hudson Cultural Alliance, are relative newcomers to this informal community.

The Alliance is particularly using its money in a high profile effort to buy the now vacant Hudson Armory from the state for use as a performing arts center. This grant win comes after organizers have touted their fundraising capabilities in repeated conversations with town Select Board members.

“The Town of Hudson has the opportunity to preserve this significant historic asset and repurpose it for community benefit,” the Cultural Alliance has written of this project on its website.

In addition to the Assabet Camera Club, River’s Edge, the Hudson Public Library and the Cultural Alliance, the list of 2021 Cultural Council grant winners in Hudson includes the Assabet Valley Chamber of Commerce, Discovery Museums, the Hudson Cultural Alliance, the Hudson Recreation Department, Sounds of Stow, Symphony Pro Musica and the Virginia Thurston Healing Garden.

As money flows from the state into local communities, the nearby Marlborough Cultural Council has also reportedly chosen its grant recipients.

In an email to the Community Advocate, Feb. 28, the Council said it will publicly release that list before the end of March.

Getting a drone Photography has always been a favorite pastime of White’s. Roughly four years ago, though, she took an extra step when her then teenage son convinced her to buy him a Mavic Pro drone. Whimsically, he named the machine “Ralph.”

For all the fun, White’s son quickly lost interest, giving White the controls. An avid traveler, White started bringing her drone on trips around the country and the world.

“Everywhere I go, it comes with me,” she said.

There were several trips to Cape Cod where White shot images of her family playing in the windswept sand. There was a trip to Greece where White photographed boats drifting through the Aegean Sea. In Iceland, White buzzed over a piercing blue frozen waterfall.

“I got some phenomenal footage there,” White said of that last trip. “That was just over the top amazing.”

Hudson musician and published author is now creating artwork

By Ed Karvoski Jr. Contributing Writer HUDSON – Stephen Beccia of Hudson continues discovering ways to express himself creatively.

As a musician, he has performed with bands as a bassist and vocalPEOPLE &PLACES ist since his teens. As a writer, he authored books and short stories. Now, he’s exhibiting his work as a visual artist.

“Being creative gives me peace of mind,” he shared. “I enjoy creating and giving something to somebody that they can relate to, whether it’s a song, a book or a painting.”

Face the music Growing up in Milford, a 13-year-old Beccia became fascinated with performing music in the 1970s when he saw the heavy metal, glam rock band Kiss on the television show “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert.”

“I loved the whole theatrics and energy of the act,” he said

of Kiss’ spectacularly costumed antics. “They’re like cartoon characters.”

He and two buddies formed a musical trio. They performed at Milford venues including an elementary school.

“My dad was a selectman in Milford at the time and saw opportunities for us to play,” he

His books are available at online booksellers. He’s currently working on a graphic novel.

“I love spinning a tale,” he noted. “Sometimes, you don’t even realize what you’re writing because there’s an invisible force – a muse – that takes over.”

Painting abstracts His creative juices flowed in yet another direction when he received a Michaels gift card for Christmas in 2017. He stocked up on art supplies including acrylic paints, brushes and canvases.

“I’ve been painting nonstop since that day,” he said. “Now, I have a boatload of paintings.

A lot of artists paint realism; I like to do abstracts. Why paint what exists when you can paint what does not? Meaning, this crazy abstract doesn’t exist until I paint it.”

Beccia creates his artwork at Hudson Art Studios located in the Odds Fellow Building at 14 Main St., Suite 4. His artwork gets exhibited at Vintage Café in Hudson and at the Loading Dock Gallery in Lowell, where he’s a member. He appreciates networking within Lowell’s thriving arts community.

“It’s a cool vibe to be part of an arts scene,” he noted. “Everybody interacts with one another and shares ideas.”

community members need and in what sizes. When the bags are ready, O’Neil-Welch picks them up from St. Stephen’s and delivers them to people in need in Westborough.

“Elite Repeats provides relief in many wonderful ways while respecting the privacy and dignity of those in need. The volunteers are so dedicated and are true humanitarians who serve from the heart. WYFS is in great support of the mission they embrace,” said O’Neil-Welch.

Mary Taber is a Westborough-based social worker for the Forbes Kirkside Foundation, which provides support for families in need in Westborough.

Taber is “delighted that [the shop] is there. It’s needed. We all have stuff in our basements that someone else can use,” she said.

In fact, Taber, in addition to Carlson and O’Neil-Welch as well as Nan Ford at St. Luke’s and Terry Gavin of the nonprofit In Your Shoes, all serve as conduits between community members in need and Elite Repeats. When they come across an individual or family in need, they may refer them to the shop - and even deliver items. “We are known to people who call us to pass along items,” Taber said.

How you can help While the amount of items sold in the thrift shop is not sparse, Barrette said that they’re “accepting donations of gently used items that anyone might buy in a thrift shop.” The kids section has toys, clothing and

“I feel honored to be part of anything that builds up a community,” Beccia said of his contribution toward Fitchburg’s initiative.

This was Beccia’s first attempt at creating a mural. He encourages others to experiment.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s art, writing or baking bread for the first time; we should all jump out of our comfort zone once in a while,” he advised. “It’s trying something that you could excel at, but you’d never know if you don’t try. It’s always good to try something new.”

9 a.m. to 12 p.m.; Thursdays 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.; and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. No appointment is necessary, and guests are asked to enter the store and/or make donations by following signs to the back of the church, which is located at 3 John Street, across from Westborough High School.

The community has embraced the initiative.

“A lot of our neighbors come in every week to shop, and they bring donations. People from the parish also come in with their donations. We can’t see the smile on their face, but we can see the smile in their eyes. We have such a ball,” said Carlson.

The final word Carlson said that part of

the thrift shop’s initiative is to raise funds for things the parish wants to do around the church.

“The other part of the mission is to reach out to people and let them know we’re here.

We just want to help people,” she said.

“We really can’t promote it before we know that we have [those doses],” Mayoral Aide Patricia Bernard wrote in an email to the Community Advocate, Feb. 25.

Likewise, each year, White compiles some of her best images into a calendar she sells to benefit the Hudson and Marlborough food pantries around the holiday season.

“It’s a time when families that are in need are really in need,” she said of that effort.

“That’s when the last thing you want is to be hungry.”

Sharing a new perspective Local reactions to this work have been overwhelmingly positive, White says.

As she particularly appreciates sunsets, she’ll regularly see her phone blow up with messages from supportive neighbors alerting her to sights she misses.

“They want pictures of their houses,” White jokes.

Her Facebook page shows some of those houses, recently dusted with snow, peaking between sparse tree canopies.

Winter photos from past years show intricate, naturally

occurring, geometric patterns frozen into the Fort Meadow Reservoir.

Other shots, taken when the ice thaws, reveal the rocky lakebed visible through shallow water.

Still more photos, shot in the summer, show water skiers darting, jumping and sometimes somersaulting over boat wakes. From time to time, those skiers wave to White, piloting Ralph a hundred feet overhead.

With that aforementioned calendar raking in $1,000 for charity, this year, and with some fresh business opportunities in hand, White says she’s excited to continue taking photos both close to home and far away.

“I really love doing it,” she said.

Confusion, delays as Marlborough COVID-19 vaccination site’s awaits state approval Signs mark where a limited COVID-19 vaccination operation is ongoing in Marlborough.

For all those doses, though, technical errors and accessibility issues have dogged the vaccine rollout.

Particularly frustrated by a recent move from Gov. Charlie Baker to restrict dose allocation primarily to a handful of large mega-sites, Marlborough Mayor Arthur Vigeant offered good news to the City Council, Feb. 22. His staff had worked through much of the previous weekend to bring one such hub to town.

“We’re excited,” Vigeant said at the time. “We want to get as many vaccines in arms as we can.”

On Feb. 22, Vigeant said he expected Marlborough’s new site would open March 1. Marlborough was expecting an allocation of 750 daily vaccine doses. It just needed that approval finalized at the state level.

That didn’t happen, though.

Expectations, then delays in Marlborough site approval On Feb. 24, a new mega site opened at a Circuit City in Dartmouth, Mass. The Commonwealth announced other vaccine locations. But it left

Marlborough off its list.

Initially, officials remained optimistic in emails and phone calls with the Community Advocate.

Those initial sites were bigger than Marlborough’s proposal, Bernard said. The city was expecting to still get its approval

by Friday, Feb. 26.

She reiterated the same point, the next day.

“I believe the state is waiting to be sure that they can allocate 750 doses [per day] to us,” she said.

Friday came and went without approval, though. March 1 then arrived without expected local doses available. As workers set up signage advertising their clinic, they kept casting their eyes towards Boston waiting for doses.

“Our Board of Health and [the staff at] Marlborough Hospital are ready to go at the Marriott Courtyard when we get word that we can expect a vaccine,” Bernard wrote, March 2.

on March 3. Contacted once more, March 4, Bernard confirmed that was still not the case.

There has been a limited rollout of appointments for people who already have their first doses of the vaccine. But the Marriot site in Marlborough still is not booking anyone who needs their first shot. In effect, UMass Memorial has just moved its preexisting vaccination operation to the Marriott.

“It’s very limited,” Bernard said.

Marlborough still eyes clinic opening The push for vaccinations rolls forward.

City officials, after all, want their doses as Marlborough continues to heal following brutal surges of COVID-19 over the last year.

4,212 Marlborough residents

have tested positive. 113 people have died.

“We are still waiting on official approval,” Bernard wrote in one recent email to the Community Advocate. “I do not have any further info at this time.”

A ‘Night in the Cold’ successful in raising awareness for issue of homelessness

WESTBOROUGH - After spending more than 24 hours starting Feb. 27 outside in the elements, John Bogaert and Scott Henderson were more than happy to wrap it up and head back to their warm houses, thanking everyone who helped make their fundraiser, A Night in the Cold, a huge success.

“After this very turbulent year on so many levels, the compassion, caring, love and empathy that people have shown has completely restored my faith in humanity,” Bogaert said.

Because everything they needed was donated, 100% of the funds collected will go directly to the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless. As of this writing, the amount was $30,635.

“But it was a little bit real, too. It was uncomfortable and I got little sleep, and in a small way, it was a hardship that helped me briefly live the expe-

rience,” said Henderson.

Starting out early on the cold and rainy Saturday morning, the men were already chilled by the time they crawled into their cardboard boxes around midnight. They quickly learned that they had to wrap their blankets tightly around them and not move for fear of creating a gap that would let body heat out and more cold, damp air in. The lights from the 24-

hour gas station and the sound of cars going by throughout the night only made it that much harder to get any rest.

“Freezing temps combined with rain or dampness can be a deadly combination without rain gear or warm clothing.

We had both, and it was still a struggle to get any sleep. I estimate we got about 3 hours of very restless sleep,” explained Bogaert.

The men hope that getting people to feel more comfortable in talking about the issue will further raise awareness and prompt other fundraising events to help alleviate the suffering.

A sobering takeaway Tony, currently experiencing homelessness in Worcester, was a sobering source of information to the men with regard to what life holds for those in this dire situation. Through conversations with him, it became apparent that it’s not just the lack of a warm bed or meal on a regular basis that is heartbreaking.

Bogaert commented, “My biggest takeaway was when I learned that there is zero entertainment in these people’s lives.

And by entertainment, I mean anything that makes you happy.

Survival mode puts everything else on hold, funding wise and time wise.”

Spreading the word Bringing the widespread dilemma of homelessness into the public eye was the objective of the overnight event. Both men reported that countless people were willing to share stories about their own acquaintances, friends, or even family members who have experienced homelessness.

“The event created a forum for people to tell me their own stories,” explained Henderson, “and it brought home for me what a widespread problem homelessness is, and closer to my own bubble than I had realized.”

WESTBOROUGH – Nelson Ball is an esteemed businessman and dedicated volunteer in Westborough. He is also considered the town’s “Mr. Pickleball!”

Thanks to his leadership, the town now has eight pickleball courts located across from Lake Chauncy, that are enjoyed year-round by players of all ages.

(During the winter months, volunteers clean snow and ice off the courts so games can ensue.)

On March 3, Ball’s friends and fans gathered at the courts to surprise him with a small party in honor of his 90th birthday. After a rousing singing of “Happy Birthday,” Ball did what he loves best – continued playing his favorite game.

Marlborough church rallies support for couple who lost everything in fire

MARLBOROUGH - The First Church in Marlborough is raising money to help one man and his spouse get back on their feet after they lost their home in a fire in Worcester, last month.

Luchaine Whyte is a refugee from Jamaica who arrived in the U.S. four years ago. He was sponsored by the Worcesterbased LGBTQ Asylum Task Force during that process.

Whyte and his spouse, however, then lost not only their home, but all their possessions as well as their beloved cat, Elvin, when a five-alarm fire tore through their Worcester apartment building, Feb. 12.

“Our response [at] First Church in Marlborough...is rooted in our understanding of God and our reading of the Bible,” Bem said. “God in Jesus himself was a refugee, and we are reminded to ‘Be kind and show compassion to the stranger among your midst, for you were once strangers in the land of Egypt.’”

Compassion comes from understanding Whyte sought asylum because he was “suffering from discrimination and violence and feared he would lose his life if he stayed” in Jamaica, Denise Darrigrand, chair of the Task Force Steering Committee said.

Now Whyte has asylum and a job. Last fall, he married an American.

For Bem, supporting Whyte and his partner was personal.

His grandmother and mother were refugees in 1944. He, himself, is also openly gay and wrote his PhD on international refugee law.

“I know, very well what it is like to be gay and what kind of persecution [people who are gay] face in their countries of origin.”

First Church sees overwhelming response As the First Church started raising money for Whyte, Bem said he thought this effort would gather $250-$500. By early March, though, donors had already given close to $1,100.

“The response has been amazing,” Bem said.

First Church has organized this effort through the LGBTQ Asylum Task Force. In turn, that Task Force falls under the organizational umbrella of the Hadwen Park Church in Worcester. In total, Hadwen Park had raised $5,000 for Whyte and his partner with the primary goal of helping them find a new apartment and buy new furniture. A GoFundMe page, meanwhile, has collected $13,237 over the last month.

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor HUDSON/MARLBOROUGH - The stars aligned to enable Matt Filipe of the Providence Bruins to make a special professional hockey debut on familiar ice in Marlborough, this year.

Filipe is the son of 1970s Hudson High School hockey fan favorite Paul Filipe. After signing a contract with his hometown Boston Bruins organization last year, and after COVID-19 forced the sudden temporary relocation of the minor league Providence Bruins, Filipe is now playing just miles down the road from his father’s former stomping ground.

“It’s kind of funny how it all came full circle,” Filipe said in a recent interview.

Growing up with a pro hockey father Paul Filipe won a state championship with the HHS Boys Hockey team in 1978.

Championship trophy proverbially in hand, he also went home that winter with an MVP award.

From Hudson, Paul played four seasons of Division I NCAA hockey for the Northeastern Huskies. There, he won team rookie of the year recognition while later helping the Huskies win their way into a thirdplace finish in the national college postseason tournament.

Upon his college graduation, Paul signed with the Bruins, himself, and played a season of pro hockey.

Full of triumphs at multiple levels, that local story is one Matt Filipe says he grew up knowing well.

“I always had that hanging over me from him,” Matt said.

“He would always bring it up.”

Learning family history on Hudson roads Now riding team busses to out of town destinations, Matt reflects on family hockey heritage learned while driving through Hudson years ago.

Passing by Hudson High School, Matt recalls his father pointing out a small sign recognizing his 1978 state championship.

Elsewhere in town, Paul would tell grand stories of his “glory days.”

“He loves Hudson,” Matt said.

As a young skater driven by his father’s success, Filipe frequently headed to the same New England Sports Center where the Providence Bruins now play due to that aforementioned temporary COVID-19 relocation.

Though Matt has never actually lived in Hudson or Marlborough, he says the NESC and its sprawling hockey campus serve as a mecca of sorts for local athletes.

Inspired by his hometown hero father, Filipe now has his eyes on his own future.

“I just try and get better game by game,” he said.

Understanding the MassHealth Five-Year Look Back

Miller hen a person enters a nursing home on a long-term basis in Massachusetts, there are generally three ways to pay for their care: from their private funds, from a combination of private funds and long-term care insurance, or by applying for Medicaid benefits (MassHealth). Nursing homes typically charge $12,000-$15,000 per month, so most people run out of private funds quickly. If MassHealth is the only option to fund nursing home care, the applicant must complete the infamous MassHealth Long-Term Care application.

During the application process, MassHealth may request up to five years of financial records for all assets.

MassHealth routinely requests additional information explaining all large transactions, or patterns of deposits or withdrawals for smaller transactions. If a property has been sold in the past five years, proof must be provided that the applicant received fair market value for the sale. For those who are concerned about the need for nursing home care in the near future, it is prudent to save receipts for all large transactions and avoid gifting, unless it falls under one of the MassHealth transfer exceptions and is clearly documented.

For unmarried applicants to be financially eligible for MassHealth, their assets must have been reduced below $2,000. In 2020, for a married applicant who has a spouse living in the community, the couple’s total assets must be reduced below $130,640. It is not enough simply to show current bank statement(s) with a combined balance below the asset limit. The

By Cindy Zomar Education Coordinator MARLBOROUGH – Marlborough High School Student Aiden Grocki has secured a spot for his artwork, titled ‘Self Identities,’ in the 2021 Massachusetts Amazing Emerging Artists Recognition Juried Exhibit, Superintendent Mike Bergeron told the School Committee, late last month.

Inspired by learning in his AP 2D Art and Design course, Grocki’s piece combines a variety of artistic mediums to depict himself holding his cat, “Poppy.”

“I was able to combine a lot of mediums and even did some digital layering,” he said in a recent interview. “I am pretty excited to get it into the exhibit.”

Blind Juried Exhibit A blind juried art exhibit is different from an art fair at a library or local school in that a panel of ‘jurors’ pre-judge applications to see if they are worthy of entry.

Perfecting various techniques pays off Grocki, currently a junior at MHS, admitted he spent much of last summer perfecting his art techniques. He experimented with combinations of colored pencil, white charcoal, gesso, and watched YouTube videos on various artistic styles.

His mother, an art teacher in Swampscott, also tutored him on using Photoshop for photo editing.

Lights flicker on after windstorm sparks blackouts

Her neighbors, after all, were in the dark for roughly 11 hours between 9:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.

MARLBOROUGH – The lights are back on in Marlborough and Hudson after a violent windstorm downed trees, sent live electrical wires sparking onto roadways and cut power to hundreds of families amid bitter cold temperatures, last week.

Winds topped 50-miles-per hour across much of Massachusetts, according to the National Weather Service, striking the region overnight and through the morning of March 2.

As that wind still howled, Marlborough officials opened a warming center for families otherwise stuck in the cold.

That program operated out of the city’s Senior Center and remained available through 4 p.m., March 2.

By 4:30 p.m. that day, as crews restored power to a majority of local homes, Marlborough Mayoral Secretary Michelle O’Brien indicated that the city was not planning to reopen that warming center, March 3.

“The power is back on,” she then confirmed in a separate conversation, March 3.

This storm, however, hit amid COVID-19, which has shuttered many of the public places where people might ordinarily seek refuge from suddenly cold and dark homes.

Partially in light of that fact, some did temporarily relocate to Marlborough’s Senior Cen-

As Rec Department hires, Hudson DPW finalizes seasonal staffing cuts

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor HUDSON - The Hudson Recreation Department is hiring summer help, this year. The Department of Public Works is not.

This has Rec. Director Stephen Santos worried as he says his and other departments work hand in hand with the DPW, particularly during the summer months.

“Those seasonal employees, even though they’re not directly under us, do make a difference,” Santos said during a Select Board meeting last month. “They’re the ones doing the grunt work out there and doing some of that seasonal labor that does not always get done.”

COVID-19 disrupts budgets In the summer of 2019, the last year before the COVID-19

pandemic hit, the DPW earmarked money to pay eight seasonal employees for 10 weeks of minimum wage work.

That same year, the Rec. Department budgeted to pay just over 80 seasonal workers.

COVID-19 made a dent in both of those respective summer programs as Hudson weathered the still ongoing economic crisis the coronavirus caused.

Now restarting some of its pre-pandemic programming, though, the Rec. Department is again offering jobs in at least a half dozen categories. Those include lifeguard, camp counselor and tennis instructor slots among other positions.

The DPW, meanwhile, has no such opportunities.

It eliminated seasonal positions from its budget last year.

Come budget season this spring, the department has opted to extend that cut for another year.

“It’s just a matter of priorities right now,” DPW Director Eric Ryder told the Community Advocate in an interview, March 1.

DPW adapts without seasonal help Helping Santos’ Rec. Department as well as other public and private local organizations, the DPW has historically

leaned on summer employees to aid full time staff.

When one employee is mowing a field, for example, seasonal workers might be seen weed whacking.

The DPW will continue providing essential services, this year, Ryder said. But certain upkeep tasks “may take another day or so to get done.”

Ryder confirmed, March 1,

that he wants these positions back in his budget. These cuts, he noted, are not permanent.

“This is something that I will look to add back in as soon as possible,” he said.

HUDSON - Young soccer players will retake the field, this spring, as the Hudson Youth Soccer Association plans a season verging on normal following the disruption of COVID-19.

In an announcement, last month, HYSA confirmed that it will participate in the Nashoba Valley Youth Soccer League, running travel teams for players in grades three and above.

Small Fry, Advanced Small Fry and Grade 1/2 teams will play locally with weeknight practices and Saturday games each week.

A number of restrictions initially placed on play to limit the threat of coronavirus spread in the fall will be lifted.

Still, though, officials say they’re abiding by proper guidelines.

“Safety will always be our highest priority,” HYSL wrote in a Facebook post, Feb. 14. “The Hudson Youth Soccer spring 2021 program will conform to the requirements of all authorities having jurisdiction.”

Shrewsbury High School celebrates Black History month with mural

SHREWSBURY – Last month, as Black History Month drew to a close, Shrewsbury High School found a special way to mark the occasion.

The Black History Committee created a special installation of a periodic table recognizing the contributions to society by 90 notable and historical Black artists, scientists, authors, actors, activists, athletes, musicians, entrepreneurs and politicians.

Science teacher Jill Carter was inspired, she said, when she saw a TikTok presentation of a similar project in Lakeland, Fla. “After a little bit of investigating, that teacher on TikTok was very kind to share the template out for free and we took it and played around with it to make it work or us,” Carter explained.

Obituaries Brianna M. Lacey, 24 MARLBOROUGH - Brianna M. Lacey, 24, of Marlborough, died on Feb. 20, 2021 at St. Elizabeth Hospital.

She was born in Framingham, the daughter of James M. Lacey and Kimberly A. (Nichols) Lacey.

Brianna was a 2015 graduate of Assabet Valley Technical High School.

She was a longtime waitress at area restaurants. She enjoyed gymnastics, fishing, animals, music and also her love for children and the elderly.

Brianna loved being outside enjoying the sunshine. She enjoyed spending time with family. She was a true Daddy’s girl.

Brianna was a caring and giving person to everyone she knew. A room lit up when she walked in.

She was able to donate some of her organs in order to allow others to continue their lives.

She leaves her father, James M. Lacey of Marlborough, and her mother, Kimberly A. Lacey of Hudson; a brother, Jonathan “Jon” Lacey of Marlborough; and her aunts, uncles and many cousins, along with her two kittens, Lucy and Jupiter.

Calling hours were held March 2 at the Collins Funeral Home of Marlborough. Following cremation, burial will be private. A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Russell T. Davis, 74 HUDSON - Coach Russell Thomas Davis, 74, of Hudson, passed away peacefully on March 3, 2021 at UMass Medical Center in Worcester. Russell was born on Oct. 18, 1946, in Concord to the late Eugene Davis and Lucy Mae (Jones) Davis.

Coach Davis will be remembered for the countless lives he touched through athletics in the state of Massachusetts. He is a member of the Massachusetts

High School Soccer Coaches Hall of Fame and won numerous league and district titles and the first girls state championship in Hudson High history in any sport with the softball team in 2007. Russ, however, will be remembered more for his sense of humor, loyalty, and straightforwardness.

Russ served as a Seabee in the United States Navy for three separate tours, during the Vietnam War. On Oct. 19, 1969, Russ married the love of his life Janine at the First United Methodist Church of Marlborough.

Russ was predeceased by his parents, brothers Gerald and Ronald, sister Dorothy, brothers-in-law Michael and Nicholas, nieces Cindy and Lori, and nephew Michael. Russ is survived by his wife, Janine; his two sons, The Rev. Mr Scott Thomas Davis ( Jennifer) of Grosse Pointe Woods, MI and Brian Russell Davis of Northborough. Russ is also survived by his grandson, Ian Knous Davis; daughter-in-law Erika Davis of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI; his beloved cat, Salem; brother Eugene (Paula); sisters Marion and Cindy (Frank); and many nieces and nephews.

A period of visitation was held March 8 at the Tighe Hamilton Regional Funeral Home of Hudson, with a graveside committal service on March 9 at Forestvale Cemetery.

Lorraine J. Davies, 67 MARLBOROUGH - Lorraine J. Davies, 67, of Marlborough and formerly of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.; Mesa, Ariz.; and Rutland, Vt., died on Feb. 28, 2021 at her home. She was the former wife of Tracy Stewart and Cami Richardson.

She was born in Hornel, N.Y., the daughter of Wallace V. and Lorraine J. (Nelson) Davies, and was a 1971 graduate of Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. She went on to receive a Bachelor’s degree in Nursing from Adelphi University in Garden City, N.Y. Lorraine last worked for Scottsdale Healthcare in Mesa, Ariz. as a medical records coder. Prior to moving to Arizona, Lorraine worked for the Rutland Visiting

Nurse Association for a number of years before becoming a Medical Coding Technician for Rutland Regional Medical Center.

Diagnosed in 2009 with a brain tumor, she moved to Massachusets in 2012 to spend more time with her children and grandchildren.

In her spare time, Lorraine enjoyed Pickleball, knitting and reading. She’ll be remembered for her quick wit, easy laugh and friendly smile which could light up a room. Lorraine also loved music and was no stranger to dancing while no one was looking. She will be loved and missed by many.

She leaves two daughters, Erin L. Stickel and her husband Greg of Billerica and Lindsay Lane and her husband Michael of Heber City, Utah; two brothers, Paul Davies and his wife Laurel of Denver, Co. and David Davies and his wife Vikki Armstrong of Ithaca, N.Y.; two grandchildren, Marisa and Patrick Lane of Utah; and five nephews and nieces, Jack, Peter, Julia, Lily, and Oliver. She was the sister of the late Mark Davies.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

Meghan was very independent and got herself a job at the age of 14 at Robinson Hardware Store and she babysat as much as she could. She graduated Hudson High School, played volleyball and enjoyed spending time with her numerous friends she made throughout her life.

Meghan attended Westfield State Sollege where she studied Early Childhood Education.

She eventually decided to leave

college to follow her dream and start a family of her own and had two wonderful sons. She was so happy to have gained two sisters-in-law and two nephews.

She will always be in the hearts of her countless friends, cousins, aunts, uncle, grandparents, nephews, brothers, parents, and sons.

Yes, the combination of low inventory and low rates are driving parts of the market.

Inventory is perceived low because homes coming on the market are selling very quickly. The number of homes selling year over year is staying steady - the market never stops. Even at the beginning of the pandemic we still had closings.

Some clients are saying, “Let me overprice my house, the market will figure out its value.” Others have said,

In either case, you deal with market perception. If the market perceives a house as wildly overpriced, the house may be avoided by buyers. It’s the same with an underpriced house, although the bargain hunters and flippers will come out in droves.

If an aggressively priced (high priced) house does get an offer, the type of financing becomes important. I jokingly say banks really don’t want to give out money and that’s why getting a mortgage is so challenging. I tell this to buyers to telegraph it’s a bit of a game, and to win the game they need to respond quickly to an almost neverending series of mortgage underwriter questions. And often answers create more questions…so buyers need to be in the game for a bit.

The truth is banks are managing their risk. They don’t want to end up owning properties. It takes banks time and effort to “take a property” through the forec losure process. Besides checking the crevice of borrower’s couch for all change so they have

the “full financial picture,” they also want to understand what the property is worth.

The bank or mortgage company hires an appraiser to visit the property, and other comparable properties, to determine is the sales price of the home is reflective of the market. When the appraiser determines a property is valued substantially below the sale price, this “appraisal issue” ends up causing someone to make up the gap for the deal to go forward. Sometimes this means the buyer needs to kick in cash (“Hi Mom and Dad, it’s been a while, can we talk?”), or the seller must drop the price. If this doesn’t happen the property has to go back on market with frustrated buyers and sellers.

Of course this is avoided if the buyer brings cash – no bank means no appraisal.

We b e l i e v e t h e b e s t strategy is to price the house correctly from the beginning.

We look at all the automated systems (Zillow, Redfin, Realtor, Homesnap) and a few used solely by Realtors and appraisers. We call these the system values. Then we look at the numbers as an appraiser

might….we call these the human values. Systems work solely based on publicly available data, and many times have errors leading to erroneous values (why is it so hard to keep track of rooms, especially bathrooms? Perhaps a better question is how did that bathroom “appear?”)

A combination of automation and humans looking at the market often leads to a great starting value.

If you see an otherwise fine house sitting on the market a long time check the price histor y...the owner may have overpriced the house, scared people away, and is now lowering price to drive demand back. Sadly, they may end up selling for less than properly pricing from the beginning.
