The Many Benefits of Older Homes

I

n spirit of Westborough’s 300th birthday, it seems fitting to talk about older houses. For many, the charm is very appealing. Laden with both history and mystery, every house tells a story regardless of age. The architectural styles, quality of workmanship and level of detail work also draw people in. Obviously all houses require maintenance; however, just because something is older does not mean it may not be solid. For a house to have survived countless blizzards, hurricanes, heat and humidity and even earth tremors through more years than most of us reading this are even alive is something to bear in mind. Many old houses have been so well-maintained and in other cases, restored, that they rival the interior designs and structure of some newer builds. There are houses of all ages

that are yearning for someone to revive them back into the beauties they once were. According to assessment records, there are over 150 buildings in Westborough built during the years 1699-1800 with numerous others from 18001900; Southborough shows approximately 23 houses from 1697-1800. The physical location of many older houses can also be appealing. When the towns began developing, many houses were built close to center, which now provide access to the heartbeat of downtown’s businesses, and services. There are even houses more recently built that mimic an old-style reproduction. There certainly is a market for these oldies but goodies if something a little different is what you want to call your next home.
