DOWNSIZING DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN COMPROMISING Your kids DON’T want your stuff: the truth about downsizing A shift in mindset is creating a tension between generations. As baby boomers start to downsize and declutter, they want to pass on heirlooms and home goods to their millennial children. Boomers were raised by a generation coming out of the Great Depression where items were repaired/reused and passed down. Boomer children aren’t interested in their family possessions. Research shows adults in their 20s and 30s prefer to live simpler lives with less stuff. The reality is millennials aren’t interested in heirloom china, knickknacks or an eight-foot long dining table; it doesn’t fit their lifestyle. Instead of causing stress and anxiety, parents need to embrace the millennial mindset when downsizing. What we recommend is letting children go through and decide what is of interest to them. With the remainder of belongings, many families choose to donate to a charity like the Salvation Army, churches, or a resale store like Savers or Goodwill. Some will take their belongings to a consignment shop or list their items on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. The latter is more time consuming and can generate some income. Personally, I used to leave items I thought had value on my front curb, and inevitably they were gone in under 30 minutes. Finally, some people just choose to drop their items at the SWAP Shop at the transfer station. Change isn’t easy, and neither is decluttering. To best help families downsize with as little stress as possible, parents need to be willing to let go.
