DOWNSIZING DOESN’T HAVE TO MEAN COMPROMISING The best time to downsize isn’t a specific season or month; it is when your house no longer suits you and your family’s needs. Everyone’s story is different, and there comes a time when it is evident a house is too big, the yard is too much work, and the general maintenance has become a burden. I downsized after I realized all three of these truths were affecting me. I reached a point when maintaining the house became more trouble than it was worth. For example, each year, I was getting bark mulch delivered to spread it around the yard. Financially, this was a small burden, and it had also become another chore I had to deal with each year. After my children moved out, I went into each of their rooms and painted them a neutral color. This helped me to cope with the emptiness in their rooms, and I began to reconsider the way the space was serving our family. Through my reflections, I realized I was paying to maintain a big house and asked, “Why?” As a Realtor®, I knew it was time for me to make a change. It was the right time for me to downsize. This choice to downsize can leave you with time and money to spend in new and exciting areas of your life, rather than a home that no longer suits your needs.
