he milder weather this late autumn has been enjoyable, although any seasoned New Englander knows better than to believe that we can go through a winter without the cold and snow coming upon us, often when we least expect it. According to the National Association of Realtors® (NAR), 36% of vacation home buyers did exactly that, with the balance comprised of lakefront properties and houses in the country. Although the percentage of vacation home buyers dipped by 4% in 2017 to bring it more in line with the historical average, the typical home price inched up slightly to around $200,000. Savvy second-home buyers, nearly 30% of which paid all cash for their properties, have been enjoying the best of both worlds: a vacation home for themselves as well as an investment property that they rent out periodically. With the advent of services such as AirBNB and other vacation home rental sites, this has often been a win-win for the owner and “guests” alike.
