short film created by local artists about a historic rocket flight was screened at the NASA Robert Goddard Space Flight Center in late June.

The film was conceived by Maximilian Kent, a Dean College student who interned at the Hopkinton Center for the Arts under theater production manager Paul Champlin. Titled “Moon Man,” the movie dramatizes the story of Dr. Robert H. Goddard as he attempts to construct and test the first rocket to use liquid fuel.

Hopkinton man charged with attempted murder and other assault charges will have to wait another 60 days for his case to move forward as the commonwealth prepares for a grand jury hearing.

Steven Dana appeared in Framingham District Court on July 13 for a probable cause hearing in front of judge David Cunis. Dana was arrested last month at Sandy Beach after he engaged in a physical altercation with a Milford man, allegedly strangling him and holding him under the water before being pulled off by another individual.

An attorney for the commonwealth requested a 60-day continuance for the hearing, noting that the Middlesex County District Attorney’s office intends to schedule a grand jury hearing related to the attempted murder charge.

“The plan is to present to a grand jury soon,” the attorney explained. She added that a notice of discovery in the

Pair charged with larceny for alleged CVS theft

wo New York men arrested for larceny at CVS were arraigned July 13 at Framingham District Court, according to Hopkinton’s interim police chief.

In a statement released to the Independent, NEWS Interim Police Chief Scott BRIEFS van Raalten stated that officers responded to a reported larceny July 12 at the CVS at 61 Main Street at 2:07 p.m. The report noted that “two individuals were seen placing approximately $2,400 worth of merchandise into bags and exiting the store.”

Upon arrival, officers located two individuals matching the suspects’ descriptions near the Shell gas station across the street.

“The suspects, identified as Hanner Esteban Munoz Delgadillo and Juan Diego Guitierrez-Manrique … were taken into custody without incident following an investigation,” according to van Raalten. “Store employees successfully recovered the abandoned bags containing the stolen items, and officers confirmed the contents.”

Both men were charged with larceny over $1,200. Munoz Delgadillo also was charged with operation of motor vehicle after suspension or revocation of license and concealment of identity of motor vehicle.

“During the booking process, it was revealed that Guitierrez-Manrique had an active extraditable warrant out of Pennsylvania for shoplifting,” van Raalten stated. “Additionally, a vehicle associated with the suspects, a blue BMW found in the CVS parking lot, has been secured pending a search warrant.”

He added that the investigation remains ongoing.

A black bear seen in town late in June likely was trying to find a place to cool off, according to the town’s animal control officer.

On June 26, the Hopkinton Police Department received bear reports on both Wood Street and Huckleberry Road. The HPD put out a Facebook post shortly after those calls came in, referring to the animal as a “bear cub” and warning residents to use caution.

Animal control officer Bill Proctor stated that he did not get confirmation about the animal’s age or potential aggression levels. He noted that black bears are less aggressive than other bear species.

“Unless something’s really wrong with it, it’ll never come anywhere near you,” he said.

Bear sightings in the reported areas are not uncommon. Two were reported on Huckleberry Road at nearly the same time last year.

Proctor also explained that the bears that come into Hopkinton typically are reclusive.

“Most people are never lucky enough to see one,” Proctor noted. He advised residents take caution when interacting with wildlife and remove things from their yards that could attract the animals. He called out bird feeders

in particular as being a major attraction for bears.

Cyclospora outbreak monitored Amidst a national outbreak of cyclospora, Hopkinton’s health director is encouraging residents to buy produce locally and wash food items before consumption.

A gastrointestinal illness known as cyclosporiasis — caused by the parasite cyclospora — has been detected in 31 states in recent weeks, per reporting from NPR. Only 18 cases were reported in Massachusetts as of July 10. The health director said the majority of those cases — including one confirmed in Hopkinton — were related to travel.

McAuliffe offered three main recommendations for residents concerned about contracting the parasite. First, he suggested that buying more produce from local sources would reduce risk. His other two recommendations were to make sure to wash any and all produce and to be mindful when traveling.

OSPC supports Hughes Farm play area The Open Space Preservation Commission on July 9 voted to support a play area on open space at the Hughes Farm property.

Trails Committee member Linda Chuss met with the commission to share her group’s vision for a child-friendly segment of the Hughes Farm Trail. It would consist of wooden structures, granite and other natural materials, she explained.

The plan calls for up to five play areas with various structures kids can “jump around on, climb on, maybe put sticks together,” said Chuss. The Trails Committee would clear these areas of vegetation and wood chips would be put down for safety.

Funds earmarked for Senior Center Rep. James Arena-DeRosa announced on Facebook on July 11 that he successfully secured a $30,000 earmark in the commonwealth’s fiscal year 2027 budget to upgrade and renovate the Senior Center. He told the Independent that the proposed upgrades to the 20-year-old building would make it more energy efficient and improve its heating and cooling systems.

According to Sustainable Green Committee chair Geoff Rowland, the building has the highest energy use intensity of all the town’s municipal buildings. He also stated that the town voted at a previous Annual Town Meeting to fund the design project for the upgrades.

“Twenty years after its construction, it’s due for upgrades to its HVAC and insulation,” Rowland stated in an email.

Another proposal the earmark may cover is the addition of solar panels to the Senior Center’s roof.

Friends of Hopkinton gears up for Family Day

he Friends of Hopkinton’s annual Family Day event mostly will remain the same this year, with some aspects of the day changing and expanding to better accommodate attendees.

Pat O’Brien, member of the Friends and an organizer of the event, noted that the biggest change will be timing.

He explained that in previous years the event would run from 2-6 p.m. with fireworks scheduled for around 7:45 p.m. According to O’Brien, this created a lull between the end of the event and the fireworks “despite the fact we had great entertainment.”

In recognizing this gap, organizers have shifted the event to 3-7 p.m. “That way, we’ll try to keep everything rolling right up until it starts to get dark and people can settle in for the entertainment and then the fireworks,” said O’Brien.

Another way the Friends is looking to improve the experience of the day for both attendees and entertainers is the addition of a second stage. O’Brien

stated that one stage would be dedicated to just the musicians. “[This] will keep things continuous,” O’Brien noted. “Especially when we get to later bands … it takes too long to get one band off and another band on.”

O’Brien expressed excitement about returning music acts to the event this year. He noted Steve Spector and Hot Acoustics will play just before the fireworks, and Hopkinton resident Carol Cheney’s band By Chance They Met is scheduled to perform as well.

About 30-40 local organizations will participate in the event this year, and mainstays of Family Day such as the inflatable bounce houses and magic shows will be back. There also will be an array of food trucks with an expanded variety of food available. O’Brien noted there would be a chicken and rice truck this year and another serving Caribbean food. Multiple dessert trucks will participate as well.

Family Day is scheduled for Sept.

19, with a rain date of Sept. 26. O’Brien noted the day — like all of the Friends’ events throughout the year — is intended to foster community.

Herbicides wrong approach for Maspenock

I

am writing to show my support for stopping the use of PFAS herbicides in Lake Maspenock. I read the letter to the editor in the June 17 edition about this topic, and with town struggling with LETTERS TO our PFAS in our water for THE EDITOR many years now, I was surprised when I read it.

Although pesticides are important for the ecological health of our lake, there are many alternative methods that haven’t been tried. PFAS is a forever chemical, meaning it can take a thousand or more years to break down in our environment. The temporary algae bloom or invasive species that may affect the lake can be solved with many other methods, like mechanical removal or looking into why they are growing so quickly and beginning to cut off the resources they need. Both of these processes don’t require using chemicals that could last many lifetimes into the future. Additionally, while the town is acquiring a PFAS filter for our water, it’s still much better to begin to prevent the PFAS being there in the first

place so people are more able to swim and keep our water actually usable.

Overall, I am writing to show support to stop putting PFAS into our water and to protect the citizens who use the lake daily.

Conservation Commission calls out mowing violations on Chamberlain-Whalen lots

he Conservation Commission on July 14 expressed frustration about lawn mowing past the permanent immovable barriers on lots that are part of the Chamberlain-Whalen subdivision.

Permanent immovable barriers (PIBs) are placed to demarcate a buffer zone to ensure that the land is not disturbed. But during a review of three lots seeking certificates of compliance (COCs), members pointed out that mowing occurred beyond their respective boundary lines in two instances.

During the review of 53 Chamberlain Street, he noted that the commission previously requested to “see more growth out behind the property” before granting a COC. He said mowing on the property ceased, except for at the corner of an abutting lot, going past a PIB. These lots share a common driveway.

Ashley said he suspected that the landscaper for the abutting lot “continues to be mowing behind the PIBs throughout the entire property.” He told the commission that he would talk to the owner of that property.

“Just generally, I get very, very nervous about these properties,” said co-vice chair Ted BarkerHook. “We’ve had struggles with them since before people moved in with the way they were being built.”

Barker-Hook lamented that the commission recently granted a COC for a lot in that subdivision. He explained that the landscaper “has now begun mowing past the PIB again.”

Also, he speculated that the mowing may stop long enough for the commission to grant its approval, but then resume shortly afterward. This is a pattern he sought to discourage.

Conservation administrator Judy Day said she recently walked the Chamberlain side of the subdivision with the landscaper hired by the homeowners association.

“I very clearly pointed out where to mow and where not to mow within at least the common areas that have PIBs near them,” she explained.

fault because the landscaper appeared to be trying to avoid a culvert.

Chair Melissa Recos said, in that instance, she would be in favor removing that PIB “in the field and on the plan.”

With that in mind, the commission voted 4-0 to issue the COC. For the lot at 29 Whalen Road, Ashley said that mowing was an issue there as well. While he said the tree line is being “respected,” he described the same situation as with the previous property concerning a neighbor’s landscaper being overzealous with mowing.

Said Barker-Hook: “I think it’s another problem we see again and again.”

After discussion, Ashley said he would go back to the applicant rather than seek a vote.

The COC for 28 Whalen Road was approved 4-0, as Day confirmed there were no mowing violations. But wetlands consultant Joe Orzel pointed out that there had been yard waste dumped in the buffer zone at that property. Day said she did not see it when she surveyed the property.

“But if we start to see that happening now that everybody’s aware — the HOA landscaper and the residents — then the commission is fully within their rights to issue violations,” added Day. “And I’m happy to facilitate that.”

Mowing violations would amount to $300 per day for each occurrence, explained Recos.

Barker-Hook said he would rather have split-rail fences than PIBs if new developments are proposed. Other members agreed.

Cordaville Pond Dam planting plan OK’d The commission approved the planting plan for the Cordaville Pond Dam site in a 4-0 vote.

The dam, located near Hopkinton State Park off Cedar Street, borders Southborough. It is located on property owned by the MBTA along the Framingham/Worcester Commuter Rail line. The MBTA and the Massachusetts

Department of Transportation are working on a multimillion-dollar infrastructure project to either rehabilitate or decommission the dam to maintain the safety of the track.

This project last came before the commission in October 2023. The commission approved a request for sedimentation sampling and vegetation removal at the dam, with work primarily taking place on the Southborough side.

Day told members that the order of conditions also “included a funky condition.” It required mature trees to be replaced at a 1:1 ratio at the top of the dam.

Jeremy Fontaine, an environmental construction manager with the MBTA, introduced Mike Egan, a project manager at CDM Smith. CDM Smith, a Bostonbased engineering and consulting firm, is taking over the project, Fontaine explained.

Egan said there had been an assessment performed on the earthen dam. It included a hydraulic spillway capacity study, notation of structural issues and seepage concerns, an analysis of vegetation growth and a public safety review.

The assessment recommended removing vegetation, armoring the earthen embankment, lowering the spillover array, raising the earthen embankment and performing a “full dam decommissioning.” The MBTA is reviewing these five options, Egan said.

As part of the previously approved sedimentation sampling, vegetation removal was completed in November 2024.

CDM colleague Magdalina Lofstedt presented the vegetation replacement plan. She noted that the planting will be on the Southborough side of the dam because the MBTA does not own land in Hopkinton. Lofstedt proposed planting 30 trees and 19 shrubs, all of which are native species to Middlesex County.

Dana’s defense attorney, David Grimaldi, indicated he was fine with the continuance but raised concerns about how soon the grand jury hearing would be scheduled.

Cunis asked the state’s attorney to clarify whether a date actually had been set for the hearing. She stated that it was forthcoming.

The grand jury will determine whether the attempted murder charge can and will be applied in this case. The charge stems from Dana’s altercation with 21-yearold Matthew Duffy, when the men’s confrontation ended up in the shallow water.

Duffy claimed in news interviews that the 70-year-old shoved his head under the water and would not let him breathe.

During a dangerousness hearing on June 5, Grimaldi questioned that version of events, noting the shallow depths of the water and claiming Duffy never mentioned Dana attempting to drown him.

At that hearing, the defense attorney also shared his belief that the case would not be indicted by a grand jury.

It is unclear how much time Dana could face if the grand jury returns an indictment on the attempted murder charge and he is found guilty. According to Massachusetts General Law, attempted murder is punishable by imprisonment for not more than 20 years, or by a fine of up to $1,000 and imprisonment for up to 2 1/2 years.

Dana also faces 2 1/2 years for the strangulation/suffocation charge and between 2-3 years for assault and battery on a person with a disability (Duffy was using crutches due to existing injuries), along with associated fines.

Dana will appear again in Framingham District Court on Sept. 29.

Parks & Rec hears pitch for Fruit Street concessions

T

he Parks & Recreation Commission is one step closer to bringing concessions to the Fruit Street athletic complex after hearing a pitch from a potential vendor at its meeting on June 30.

Hopkinton resident Anthony Iannone met with the commission to pitch his concept for food vending at the fields. There is an existing concession stand at Fruit Street, but Parks & Rec was unable to secure a vendor when it opened up a request for proposals (RFP) in 2024.

Iannone provided an overview of his idea, stating that the lack of nearby eateries, no current food options on site and no revenue coming in from the existing stand were problems that needed to be addressed. He said he would like to bring a “farm to field” food service option to Fruit Street.

In his vision, Iannone said he was OK with traditional concession stand offerings if the commission preferred, but he wanted to have “something a little more creative and curated outside of that.” The stand would prioritize readyto-go food with minimal preparation and cooking, and it would limit its staffing to Hopkinton residents.

Iannone provided his qualifications for the commission, noting he works full-time selling medical device software and consulting but worked in food service for many years.

Part of his goal, he explained, is to help improve the town’s image when organizations like Hopkinton Youth Soccer host big events with guests from across the region.

“We can make Fruit Street more of a destination,” he concluded. “I think there’s so much potential there. I’m happy to help make it into something more than it already is.”

Following Iannone’s presentation, Parks & Rec Director Jon Lewitus asked commission members to look over the previous RFP and determine how they would want to make changes before going through the town procurement process again. He added that, should the contract be awarded to Iannone, service could begin as early as the end of September.

“I think it’s great that we’re going to restart this,” said vice chair Dan Terry, noting his only concern was that he did not want “Fenway Park prices.”

Iannone responded by stating he had worked out some early pricing structures, and his vision would be to fall between Dunkin’ and Starbucks.

Following the discussion, members voted to have Lewitus and chair Kyle Smith review the previous RFP and make adjustments.

“I, for one, am rooting for the success of whoever runs that [concession stand] more than I am anything else,” said Terry. “I think we kind of owe the users a doghouse facility.”

The idea to withdraw the request came after town engineer Dave Daltorio suggested Parks & Rec could put a prefabricated building where the existing concession shack is, eliminating the need for a design study.

Terry clarified that the study was suggested because it was unclear how wastewater would be removed from the proposed bathrooms. He added that the presence of a toilet in the current building did not mean it was connected to a septic line.

Furthermore, Terry claimed that there were no records of septic work at the park.

“We can’t just sit here and say there’s no records,” Lewitus responded. “I don’t know for a fact that there’s no records.”

Member Amy O’Donnell agreed with Terry, adding that someone would still have to do design work and figure out the septic.

Terry maintained that if there were no records to be found, then whichever company took the eventual bid for the study would assume the records did not exist. He also shared concerns that the $50,000 was not enough to get a contractor to bid on the project.

After further discussion, the commission agreed to maintain the request until it got more information from the town engineer.

If a child is having vision issues, such as difficulty seeing details or poor concentration, they should be examined. He also cited a rise in myopia (nearsightedness) due to the increased screen time spent by children and teens.

“Because we are a practice with multiple offices, we are able to bring excellent, well-trained staff who are very well known and liked by their patients,” added Kaldawy. “They connect with their patients, are good listeners and treat everyone like family.”

For adults, Kaldawy urges everyone to know their family’s eye history. He urges adults over the age of 40 to talk to their eye-care provider about genetic eye diseases and associated risks.

Kaldawy and his associates strive to advance eye care and hope to prevent degenerative eye conditions with early detection. He is proud of Boston Eyes’ state-of-the-art equipment, such as the Optomap, an ocular retinal scanner that can detect retinal disease, which can be difficult to see with the naked eye.

He cited the increasing prevalence of macular degeneration with the growing elderly population. Boston Eyes has been among the first in the state to offer photobiomodulation (PBM), a newly FDA-approved treatment for dry macular degeneration.

“In the past, we used to tell patients that there was nothing we could do for dry macular degeneration, but now we offer are treatments that can delay the occurrence of the disease,” said Kaldawy.

Auburn. According to NASA’s biography of the scientist, the launch was “as significant to history as that of the Wright brothers at Kitty Hawk.”

Champlin, who was involved with the project, explained Kent had asked him to write and direct the film. The two partnered up on “Moon Man” and began shooting in January. Champlin noted they completed work on the film on the 100th anniversary of Goddard’s launch.

Filming was done at the launch site in Auburn and Goddard’s house in Worcester, which has been preserved and now is used as a conference center, according to Champlin. Hopkinton resident Brad Walker had a role in the film, as did former

residents Isaiah Munoz and Tommy Karner.

Through connections made at an event celebrating the 100th anniversary of the launch, Kent was able to secure screening the film at the Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, Champlin said.

It was screened for the public there on June 27, and NASA personnel had a chance to watch it on June 30.

Champlin explained that Kent’s love for space inspired the idea for this movie. “He is really interested in … the intersection between science and the arts, and telling science stories through the arts,” said Champlin. He added that Kent’s vision is to use art as a way to get people into science.

Water-Sewer Department manages system issues

he Water-Sewer Department has spent the first few weeks of the summer managing emergencies that have impacted the town’s water systems and customers.

A recent water main break on Claflin Place likely was a combination of factors including the pipe’s age and work in the area, according to WaterSewer Manager Jed Fenneuff.

“While the recent drainage construction in the area may have been a contributing factor to the timing of the failure, the water main’s deteriorated condition indicates that it had reached the end of its useful life and required replacement,” Fenneuff stated in an email.

Crews responded to Claflin Place on June 28 for reports of a water main break. The issue arose as contractors were planning to pave the road following upgrades to its drainage.

As of July 7, the Water-Sewer Department was working on installing a water main bypass on Claflin Place that connects to an existing fire hydrant and extends along the road, crossing over a nearby bike trail. In an email sent to the Independent prior to an official notice to residents, Fenneuff anticipated the bypass would be up and running by July 9, pending “successful installation and completion of the required water quality testing.”

Fenneuff did not believe crews working on Claflin Place came into contact with the water main and broke it. Instead, stressing it was only

speculation, he stated that vibrations from milling the pavement might have led to the water main’s failure. “It is hard to say really, since it is underground,” he noted.

The now defunct water main was 2-inch steel installed in 1949. Fenneuff noted that breaks on water mains of this age are not uncommon, and his department has a running list of ones that need to be replaced. The new main will be 2-inch high-density polyethylene plastic pipe.

The water-sewer manager also stated that a timeline for replacing the main was forthcoming, stressing that the priority was making sure affected customers had access to water. Once the temporary bypass is installed, he said it should take two weeks to install the new water line.

“Every effort is being made to restore the long-term reliability of the water system while minimizing disruptions to the neighborhood,” Fenneuff added.

Well 7 gets pump replacement The department also conducted a well shutdown on June 22, fixing a longstanding issue with the motor at Well 7.

Fenneuff informed residents the previous week that Wells 7 and 8 would be taken offline for necessary repairs. He reported that a mechanical failure meant that both needed to be shut down while a contractor installed a new pump in Well 7.

“Since its original installation in 2012, Well 7 has experienced recurring issues with its motor,” Fenneuff explained in an email to the Independent. He noted that his department has been monitoring the equipment’s condition for years and developed strategies to extend its service life. He added that the operational controls implemented to overcome the performance issues were “no longer providing the level of protection needed,” resulting in the decision to replace the motor.

“As the condition of the motor continued to deteriorate, we were faced

with the likelihood of an imminent failure,” Fenneuff stated. “Rather than waiting for an emergency situation that could impact system operations, we chose to take a proactive approach.”

That approach involved replacing Well 7’s vertical turbine pump and motor with a submersible pump system. This new system will reduce maintenance requirements and improve reliability, according to Fenneuff. He added that the project cost $17,000 and was paid for out of the available budget.

The reduction in well capacity and production coincides with ongoing drought conditions and the town’s extended water restrictions. As of July 9, Hopkinton still was in a Level 3 critical drought, according to the state’s Water Resources Commission.

“We are experiencing the [driest] start to a year in recorded history for this area,” stated Fenneuff.

Repairs on the well began June 22 and were completed July 1. Fenneuff reported afterward that Wells 7 and 8 were back to normal functioning.

Youth Rowing Program Fills the Void

n a typical weekday afternoon across Central Massachusetts, students fan out to fields, courts and rehearsal halls. Along the docks of Lake Quinsigamond, however, another group assembles — lowering sleek rowing shells into the water and preparing to train.

Many area high schools do not offer rowing as a sport. There are no erg-filled training rooms or longstanding crew traditions. Regatta Point Rowing was established to provide that opportunity, offering a coed youth team program for middle and high school students throughout the region — particularly those whose schools do not have teams of their own.

The club has grown into a multicommunity program drawing athletes from Worcester, Hopkinton and surrounding districts. What began as an open invitation to try a lesser-known sport has evolved into a structured, competitive team environment. On the dock, athletes from different schools carry shells side by side. Once on the water, school affiliations fade, replaced by rhythm, communication and shared effort. Success depends on the boat moving as one.

Some athletes participate in a single season to complement other sports or extracurricular activities, while others row year-round. The schedule offers flexibility for multi-sport athletes while maintaining continuity for those seeking long-term development.

Beyond the benefits of competition, rowing can also create opportunities beyond high school. Colleges across the country actively recruit studentathletes for their rowing programs, and because the sport often has a smaller recruiting pool than more widely played sports such as baseball or lacrosse,

dedicated rowers may have access to additional opportunities for collegiate recruitment and, in some cases, athletic scholarships. Coaches and admissions officers also recognize the qualities the sport develops — discipline, resilience, time management and the ability to work effectively as part of a team

For first-time rowers, the learning curve can be steep. Balancing a narrow shell and mastering proper stroke technique requires repetition and patience. Confidence builds as athletes learn to move in unison and push through the physical strain of training and racing.

“Rowing is the ultimate team sport,” said Director of Rowing Glenn Sundin. “It doesn’t matter what school you attend or how much experience you have. When you’re in that boat, you succeed together or you struggle together. Our goal is to make sure every student who puts in the work has the opportunity to earn a seat.”

The coed structure further shapes the team dynamic. Boys and girls train alongside one another, competing for speed while sharing leadership roles across grade levels. Experienced rowers mentor newcomers, helping them learn technique, terminology and race strategy.

Parents say the sport’s physical and mental demands extend beyond competition.

“Our son has changed through his involvement with the team,” said Kasey Postizzi. “Practices can be long. The races are grueling. But it teaches discipline, perseverance and accountability. He’s more confident and focused.”

During regattas, families line the shore of Lake Quinsigamond to watch boats surge down the course. Though the athletes represent many schools, they compete as one team.

Fall tryouts for the youth team begin August 24.

The following are the four key stages of financial growth.

Stage 1: For very young children, the goal is to make money feel simple and manageable. A great place to start is with three jars labeled “Spend,” “Save” and “Share.” When kids can actually see their money grow or shrink, the idea starts to make sense. A simple system that helps them track deposits and withdrawals can make all the difference. Whether they use an app, a paper notebook or a spreadsheet, the real goal is awareness.

Teenagers also benefit from learning how credit works. Understanding how to build a healthy credit score and how to use credit wisely protects them from costly mistakes in later life.

Stage 4: Then come the early working years, when habits shift from learning to building. One of the smartest steps at this stage is paying yourself first. Automatic transfers to savings or retirement accounts help establish stability without extra effort. Even small retirement contributions matter more than most people realize, because time allows compounding to do the heavy lifting. This is also when young adults can start organizing their money into different buckets for rent, automobile payments, emergencies, retirement and everyday spending. These habits help lay the groundwork for financial freedom down the road.

Throughout every stage, the theme is confidence. Each small success creates a sense of control and each good habit makes the next one easier. Over time, these habits turn into a lifetime of financial security and fulfillment. he Hopkinton Fire, a Hopkinton Youth Soccer team of girls in Grades 7 and 8, made it to the semifinals of the Massachusetts Tournament of Champions June 26-28, becoming the first HYS team to make it into the statewide soccer event.

Getting all the way to MTOC was not a foregone conclusion for the team. Coach Dave Fine noted that it was “certainly an uphill battle during the season” as the girls took on competitive, club-level players from around the Boston area.

“We were also below .500 after five games,” assistant coach Denis Murphy added. He explained that the team overcame its early 1-2-2 standing to tack on a 4-0-1 run that allowed it to qualify for the Boston Area Youth Soccer (BAYS) playoffs.

“Qualifying for even the BAYS playoff was in doubt for most of the season,” Fine said. However, the girls “turned on the jets” and went undefeated in the second half of the season.

The team then won the BAYS playoffs, which allowed it to enter the state tournament. Out of over 150 BAYS teams, Hopkinton Fire was just one of three to make it to MTOC. The girls also are members of the only two HYS teams ever to qualify for the BAYS playoffs.

At the state tournament, the girls spent three days in a World-Cup style competition at the Massachusetts Youth Soccer Association headquarters in Lancaster knocking off teams from Shrewsbury, Sandwich and Agawam. Their semifinal game against Norwell remained tight until the last 10 minutes, when the opposing team scored and won the match 1-0.

Despite the loss, Fine said the girls “really played their hearts out” and enjoyed the ride. He also spoke to the team’s talent. “[We’re] clearly neck-and-neck with the best in MTOC,” Fine said.

Fine also praised the team for how it came together and how members supported each other through the season. “It’s just a fantastic group of girls,” he said. “They really sort of bought into the team-first mentality.”

pair of Hopkinton siblings recently traveled to Greensboro, North Carolina, to compete in the World Ninja League World Championships.

Ansh and Dia Pungaliya spent a long weekend in late June competing in their respective categories against kids from across the country. Their father, Arun Pungaliya, explained that the siblings had been building up to that moment over the course of many months of training.

“They qualified for the New England regional, which was in Tyngsborough in late May,” said Pungaliya. “If you are within a certain range of ranking, you qualify for the worlds.”

Ninja is a style of obstacle course competition focused on “beating the course, not your competition,” according to the World Ninja League website. The sport was made popular by the reality competition program “American Ninja Warrior.”

Pungaliya explained that his children train at Surge Ninja Gym in Hopkinton, and that athletes from the gym generally do well in competitions. He added that the training protocol can be intense, with the kids taking up to four classes a week.

“It’s even a commitment for the parents,” he joked.

Ansh and Dia faced three tiers of competition at the world championships. Pungaliya remarked that Ansh just missed out on reaching the final stage of his age group, but Dia managed to make it through all levels

“She’s [a] top-15 ninja in the world for her age group,” Pungaliya noted.

Both kids enjoyed themselves at the event, according to their father. A highlight he recalled was Ansh and Dia getting to see some of their favorite athletes from “American Ninja Warrior” in person.

“Their minds were blown when they saw their favorite ninjas face to face,” he said.

The family now is taking a break and traveling abroad. However, Pungaliya stated that his kids are eager to get back home and train up for their next competitions.

Li Liu will give a solo performance titled “Traditions of Chinese Acrobatics.”

William Guthrie William Guthrie, 78, died June 29 at Framingham’s MetroWest Medical Center after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was the husband of Carol (Drowne) Guthrie, to whom he was married for 39 years.

Born in Bangor Maine, he was a true outdoorsman and loved fishing, hunting and gardening.

William is predeceased by his parents, William and Agatha (Schiller) Guthrie, and his brother, Jerome Guthrie.

He leaves behind his sisters, Maryellen Polard and Margaret Guthrie of Brewer Maine. In addition to his wife Carol, he is survived by his stepdaughters, Patricia Guin of Westborough and Sandra (Leonard) Bomba of Milford, and several other family members.

Greg Leal Gregory Christopher Leal, 66, of Hopkinton passed away on July 4. Born in Framingham, he was the son of the late Alice (Fitzgerald) and George F. Leal Jr. He was the husband of 39 years to Rachel (Dyer) Leal of Hopkinton.

Greg enjoyed spending time at Woodville Rod & Gun Club, where he ran trap. He loved being outdoors, whether he was hunting, fishing, boating or snowmobiling. He rode his Harley every chance he got. He was an avid reader and a talented stained-glass artist. He also created artwork for his brother’s books. Greg was a Patriots and Celtics fan and went to games whenever he could. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes, spending time in his garden and making homemade salsa from what he grew.

In addition to his wife, Greg is survived by his son, Joshua Leal; his siblings, George F. Leal III and wife Pamela, Katherine Clemence and husband William; Debra Leal and Colleen Leal-Foden. He is predeceased by his son, Jeffrey Leal, and his sister, Christine Wisnewski. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Jaz and Emerald, as well as many nieces and nephews.

10 at Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton, followed by burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Hopkinton. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Heart Association at heart.org.

Cynthia Lin Cynthia Gibson Lin, 40, of Hopkinton passed away on July 1 at Mass General Hospital in Boston.

Born in Hong Kong, she was the cherished daughter of Martina (Law) and Brian Tong of Natick. She was the beloved wife of Terry Lin of Hopkinton.

Cyndi was a graduate of Natick High School and later earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine. She had a creative spirit and enjoyed home improvement projects, painting and gardening. Cyndi was kind, caring and hard-working, and she put her creativity to work through an e-commerce business she built. She was the light of the party and had a natural way of uplifting those around her. She loved living in Hopkinton and was deeply grateful for the dear friends she met in town. More than anything, Cyndi was a devoted mother to her children.

They were the center of her world and greatest pride and joy.

In addition to her husband, Cyndi is survived by four children, Kyle Gibson and Kelsey, Cameron and Samantha Lin. She also leaves behind her sister, Natalie Shapiro and husband Derek of South Carolina, and their son, Jacob; as well as her in-laws, Shang and Hillary Lin of Framingham.

Private services are being held at Chesmore Funeral Home of Hopkinton.

Edward Fair Edward L. Fair, 73, passed away suddenly on July 5 in the comfort of his West Boylston home.

He is survived by his two sons, Timothy M. Fair of Rumford, Maine, and Michael E. Fair of Wakefield; and by his brother, Raymond J. Fair and wife Brenda of Hopkinton.

Edward was born in Framingham, the son of the late Raymond J. Fair Jr. and Mabel (Morrissey) Fair. He was a graduate of Hopkinton High School, class of 1972.

He had a deep love of nature.

Wildlife, hunting, weather and the great outdoors were constant threads throughout his life. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing and made unforgettable trips to Montana, Maine and Cape Cod. As an animal lover, he also cherished the many dogs he had throughout his life.

Edward worked for more than 20 years as a manager at Cumberland Farms culinary center and distribution warehouse in Westborough. In a late-

career pivot, he turned his passion into a profession when he became the proud owner of B&A Bait & Tackle Shop, serving the Wachusett Reservoir fishing community and beyond for the past 14 years. He worked there seven days a week, 365 days a year — including every holiday — because he believed someone should be there, even if it was just to sell one person a container of worms and put a fishing pole in their hands. More than a shop, it became a gathering place where friends came to sit, talk, drink coffee and pass the time. Countless families have him to thank for introducing them to fishing and for the lifetime of memories they made along the way. His greatest catch wasn’t the fish — it was inspiring countless people and families to discover a lifelong love of the outdoors.

A funeral service was held July 9 at Fay Brothers Funeral Home in West Boylston. Burial was to be held privately at Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Hopkinton.

Charles Moore Charles W. “Chuck” Moore, 56, of Mendon passed away unexpectedly at his home on July 7. Chuck was the beloved husband of Lori (Sherman) Moore. High school sweethearts, they shared nearly 40 years together, marrying in 1992 and building a life centered on love and family.

Born in Malden on June 12, 1970, he was the son of Louise (Hurley) Moore of Bellingham and the late Richard Moore. Chuck grew up in Bellingham, graduated from Bellingham High School in 1988 and dedicated nearly 38 years to the Town of Hopkinton Department of Public Works, where he was known for his reliability and willingness to help others.

Chuck was deeply devoted to his family and community. He had a lifelong passion for football, serving as captain of the Bellingham High School football team before spending many years coaching youth football and later at Nipmuc Regional High School. He also was a proud veteran of the United States Army. He was a thoughtful and dependable man who could always be counted on by both his friends and family.

He enjoyed golfing, camping and cheering on the New England Patriots, often sharing those moments with family and friends. Above all, Chuck cherished his role as “Papa” to his four grandchildren, who were the light of his life.

In addition to his wife and mother, Chuck is survived by his son, Derek and wife Melissa of Shrewsbury and their daughters, Isley and Stevie; his daughter, Danielle and husband Cam of Hudson and their children, Cole and Bea; his brother, Richard Moore and wife Jeannette; his sister, Kathy Antonellis and husband Mark; his mother-in-law, Carolyn Sherman; his sister-in-law, Donna Boni and husband John; his

nieces and nephews, Matthew, Emily, Riley and Karen; along with many extended family members, lifelong friends, former players and coworkers.

He was predeceased by his father, Richard Moore, and his father-in-law, David Sherman.

Chuck will be remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, coach and friend whose kindness and steady presence touched many lives.

In accordance with his wishes, Chuck will be cremated. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Kumiko Oga Our beloved Kumiko Oga, a former Hopkinton resident, moved on to meet her mom and dad in heaven on June 19 at the tender age of 58 years old. We could tell you a lot about her achievements; she had many after graduating as a communications major from Boston College. Like how hard she worked to get her real estate license, for example. We could also bring you to tears, laughing at the stories of her and all the wonderful crew who flew with her at American Airlines. But for all of us who had the privilege of knowing her, it will be the essence of her, the experience of being with her and around her, that we will all remember.

There are people who leave behind accomplishments as well as those who leave behind stories. And then every once in a while there are the very rare and few who leave behind a way of being in the world.

Kumi was one of those people.

When you were with her, even if it was for a little while, you remembered the way she made you feel. Safe.

Welcome. Important. As though there was always going to be enough goodness in the world to believe tomorrow would somehow be OK. There was a rare lightness to her.

She moved through the world with the fierce curiosity of a child, completely untouched by resentment. It was like Kumi had looked at her past and decided that bitterness was simply too heavy a burden to carry. So, she dropped it.

Because of that, her laughter came easily, her sense of wonder never faded, and she met every new chapter with an open, breathless heart.

Kumiko believed deeply in people.

She believed goodness was stronger than cruelty, that hardship eventually gives way to hope, and that even the most difficult times would pass. She didn’t ignore life’s troubles and burdens. She just simply and steadfastly refused to let them become the loudest voice in the room.

For those fortunate enough to love her, she offered something difficult to describe but impossible to forget. She made people feel safe. Truly safe. The kind of safety that allows a person to become more fully themselves. Those who had known hurt often found healing in her quiet acceptance. Those who had already known love somehow felt even

Linda Johnson Linda A. Johnson of Harwich and Naples, Florida, passed away peacefully after a short illness on July 4 at Cape Cod Hospital. She was born June 22, 1942, at the Richardson House at Boston Lying-In Hospital (now Brigham & Women’s Hospital) in Boston. Linda was the oldest daughter of Nils Walter Johnson (Sweden) and Gertrude Anderson (Boston). She is predeceased by one sister, Pamela K. Covell (nee Johnson) of Framingham.

Linda grew up in Belmont and graduated from Belmont High School in 1959.

After the passing of both her parents, Linda moved in with her aunt, Vera Almgren, and cousin, Diane Carenas (Almgren), of Dartmouth. She attended Northeastern University, where she received her Bachelor of Arts in reading, Bachelor of Science in teaching of math, and her master’s in reading education.

Linda taught in public school in Massachusetts, with the majority of her teaching career spent at the Bird School in Walpole. A highlight of her time there was organizing a classroom business making and selling artificial flowers made from small conch seashells.

This funded several annual class trips to Nantucket for overnight stays full of island adventures for the kids. She retired from teaching seventh grade in Millis. Linda resided at various times in Newton, Framingham, Hopkinton and Milford before retiring to Cape Cod and Florida. Linda was an avid world traveler, taking numerous trips to many countries in Europe, South America and other far-off places. She loved to play tennis and was still playing into her 80s.

A favorite activity of hers was spending time with friends at the penny slots in Rhode Island and Boston.

Kumiko is also survived by her beloved husband, Toru Oga, who was awarded the Japanese Cuisine Goodwill Ambassador distinction by the Japanese government through the consul general of Japan. He is the accomplished master chef and owner of the amazing Ginza, Oga’s and Muku restaurants.

A service was held at the Collins Funeral Home in Marlborough on July 12.

She also leaves behind many wonderful close friends.

Eleanor Moser Eleanor Theresa Moser, 87, of Hopkinton passed away peacefully at her home on July 9. She was surrounded by her family at the time of her passing, in her beautiful home in the woods, with the birds and forest animals that she so dearly loved to watch just outside her windows.

Born in Somerville, she was the daughter of the late Mary Frances (McCarthy) and Alexander M. Sullivan.

Known as “Ele” all of her young life, she met her husband, William R. Moser, while attending Brandeis University. Upon being introduced to Bill, she happily said to him, “My name is Eleanor Theresa Rose Marie Sullivan; take your pick.” From that day on, she was known as Terry. Terry and Bill had a wonderful marriage and partnership of over 66 years. She loved traveling the world with her husband and experiencing different cultures and languages all across the globe. She had a lifelong passion for learning and reading that she passed along to her children and grandchildren. She was a cherished mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, and her presence will be deeply missed.

In addition to her husband, Terry is survived by her daughter, Britt Moore (Michael); sons Alex Moser and Bill Moser; grandchildren Alexis Moser and Michael Moser (Anett), and Jackson, Riley and Eleanor “Ella” Moore; as well as one precious great-granddaughter, Vivian Eleanor Moser.

A casual celebration of her life was held at her home on July 18.

2:39 p.m. An officer was requested to respond to the school offices regarding a samurai blade found in the parking lot.

10:26 p.m. After a West Main Street facility received a call about someone in scrubs — possibly a resident — walking around, officers responded and checked the area with a negative find. Facility staff confirmed that no one was missing.

5:34 p.m. A car carrier reportedly hit a mailbox on Lumber Street and left the scene. Milford Police advised that a vehicle went toward Granite Street to Route 85. Officers were out with the vehicle on Deer Run. 7:41 p.m. A caller reported that a dog was in a car on West Main Street with no windows open. Officer Kyle Quinzani responded and found the dog’s owner in the car with the animal.

4:17 p.m. Officers conducted a stop on East Main Street and detained a 73-year-old resident of Franklin Street in Framingham on a number of charges including speeding in violation of special regulations, unlicensed operation of a motor vehicle, disorderly conduct, failure to stop for police and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

2:07 p.m. Units responded to a call from a store employee regarding a larceny in progress.

Officer Benjamin Vaz drove around the premises and found nothing out of the ordinary before two men were stopped and taken into custody.

Hopkinton Police charged two men, ages 20 and 27, from New York with larceny over $1,200 and attaching wrong plates to their vehicle to conceal their identity.

10:52 a.m. Officer Benjamin Vaz responded to a water main break on Claflin Place. The Water Department was called.

5:37 p.m. An Amazon driver reported a hit and run to his vehicle on Proctor Street. A crash report was taken.

7:08 p.m. A caller reported he hit a hawk, and it was in his driveway. The animal control officer responded.

9:46 p.m. Westborough Police reported a vehicle involved in a hit and run was heading toward Hopkinton.

Officers Nicholas Saletnik and Sean McKeon headed toward the area, and Saletnik conducted a stop of the vehicle on Wood Street. Westborough was contacted and sent units to respond. Westborough PD were to handle the hit and run.

11:47 p.m. A caller stated that he overheard two kids talking about underage drinking at a house party on Fenton Street. Officers Lucille Creedon and Sean McKeon responded and reported no noise on Fenton Street. No other calls about the situation were received.

7:34 p.m. Officers responded to a motor vehicle collision with a tree on Frankland Road and found the driver walking away from the scene. The 49-year-old Aspen Way resident was arrested and charged with resisting arrest, disorderly conduct, leaving the scene of property damage, negligent operation of a motor vehicle, operating under the influence and failure to file an accident report.

5:02 p.m. Officers conducted an arrest on West Main Street and detained a 37-year-old woman from Beacon Street in Worcester on a warrant out of Worcester District Court. A vehicle was towed from the scene.

1:22 p.m. Officer Matthew Santoro completed a check of Wood Street after a black bear reportedly crossed over the road into a yard.

2:30 p.m. Sgt. Shannon Beloin logged a call about a black bear in the area of Huckleberry Road.

5:26 p.m. Officer Sean McKeon spoke to a walkin who requested to file a complaint about a sergeant.

9:39 a.m. A caller stated that a bat flew into his car

1:10 a.m. Officer Cody Normandin reported parties stole items from Alltown Fresh on West Main Street. He located the parties, retrieved an item and returned it to the store.

2:11 p.m. Units responded to a call reporting that a large truck pulled down wires on Fruit Street. Detour signs were placed in the area. Verizon was notified and was to respond. Officer Benjamin Vaz took an incident report.

5:24 p.m. A calling party reported neighborhood women on Fruit Street were directing traffic. Officer Kyle Quinzani assisted.

12:08 p.m. Officers took a report of suspicious activity regarding a FedEx driver stopping a young girl 14 times to speak with her on Washington Lane.

11:29 a.m. A Proctor Street resident called to report a landscape truck hit her daughter’s car on Saddle Hill Road on July 1, and the landscape company was not returning her calls. She was advised to call the insurance company and fill out an accident form.

1:34 p.m. Dispatchers received multiple calls for a vehicle crashing into a telephone pole on East Main Street. Eversource was notified of pole damage and leaning wires in the roadway. Eversource was on scene, and the road eventually was opened. Officers took a report of a crash with no personal injury.

July 4

2:59 a.m. Officer Cody Normandin responded to a noise complaint of fireworks on Main Street. He checked the area with a negative find.

9:37 a.m. Multiple officers assisted with shutting down Hopkinton State Park due to capacity issues. Many vehicles were removed after a public address system announcement.

Officers spoke with one individual who eventually moved their vehicle.

6:13 p.m. Officers responded to a 911 call of a vehicle all over the road and almost hitting another vehicle on West Main Street.

The driver told officers they were a lifeguard at Hopkinton State Park and just had a long day.

July 5

12:01 a.m. Dispatch noticed three parties on camera walking toward the water by the bath house at Sandy Beach. The parties appeared to enter the water to the right of the lifeguard station. Officers spoke with the parties, who were to leave for the night.

1:01 a.m. A caller stated he was outside on Lakeshore Drive when a large white pickup truck drove by and threw an alcoholic beverage out the window toward him. The party reported the truck was lowered and had an unknown number of occupants.

Units responded to the scene. Officer Justin Cappuccio identified one beer bottle in a driveway. Officer Cody Normandin stopped a vehicle matching the description near Ramp 5, but it was unrelated to the call. He gave the vehicle a warning for a red light violation. Units continued to check the area.

9:11 a.m. Sgt. Arthur Schofield responded to Main Street after a caller reported concerns for two pit bulls in a potentially hot car. He checked and spoke with the reporting party and the owner. The dogs were reported to be fine, and the owner left with them.

9:31 a.m. A caller reported a person disrupted a church ceremony on East Main Street and was on foot heading toward Hopkinton. Officers responded, spoke with all parties and took a report.

July 6

5:04 p.m. A former tenant of a Leonard Street property was reported to have gone through the mail there. The reporting party was advised the matter was a civil issue.

12:48 a.m. Officers responded to Pike Street following calls about three youths playing ding dong ditch in the area. The parties were gone upon arrival.

10:52 a.m. A caller reported a female rang her doorbell at 5:50 a.m. asking if she could leave her e-bike at the caller’s Cedar Street residence. The home’s security camera captured footage of a car picking up the female. Officer Noah Buentello responded and spoke with the reporting party. He also spoke to the e-bike owner.

12:58 p.m. A party reported e-bikes traveled directly toward traffic on East Main Street before turning around in front of oncoming traffic. Officer Noah Buentello responded and checked Legacy Farms but did not locate the e-bike riders.

July 10

10:21 a.m. A caller reported a past hit and run on Hayden Rowe Street involving a black Audi. Officer Aline Matos responded, spoke with the reporting party and noted the struck vehicle was gone on arrival. She was awaiting a possible call from the owner of the struck vehicle before she could proceed with charges.

1:08 p.m. A Hayden Rowe Street caller reported an ongoing parking complaint that was heightened due to a large funeral service. Officer Aline Matos was able to handle the traffic situation during her funeral escort. The complaint was logged.

July 8

11:09 a.m. An anonymous caller reported that a neighbor’s cat on Davis Road attacked a resident recently, and it was supposed to be quarantined. She stated the cat was out walking in the neighborhood. The animal control officer was advised and responded.

5:45 p.m. Officers responded to Ash Street after a caller reported two males trying to dump tires. The reporting party noted they spoke with the men, who put the tires back into their vehicle. Officers checked the area

July 14

6:24 p.m. A Davis Street caller reported an aggressive cat whose owner was being confrontational. The parties were advised to stay away from each other when out walking their pets.

10:05 p.m. A caller on Main Street requested an officer check something moving in the shopping bag on the front seat of her car. Nothing strange was found in the vehicle.

11:53 p.m. Milford Police received a report of an erratic operator heading toward Hopkinton. A caller reported that the vehicle was tailgating them, brake checking and speeding through red lights and stop signs. Officer Jennifer Manning responded to South Street, but the vehicle was gone on arrival.

8:50 a.m. A caller reported a possible crash overnight into a

July 7

1:08 a.m. A caller from Blueberry Lane reported she could see a vehicle with its headlights on at the new construction area on Myrtle Avenue. She thought it was suspicious since she did not believe anyone lived there yet. The caller also reported this is the third or fourth time she has seen a vehicle there. Officers checked the area and found three parties in a vehicle. They were advised not to hang out in active construction zones and were to be on their way.

7:52 a.m. Units responded to West Main Street for a report of a disabled 10-wheeler. A towing company was called, and officers directed traffic up Ramp 7.

8:48 a.m. Officer Augusto Diaz Jr. responded to West Main Street after a vehicle hit the disabled 10-wheeler. He took a crash report.

11:45 a.m. A caller reported a rollover on Overlook Road, and they were assisting occupants out of the vehicle. Units responded along with an engine from Southborough. Crews evaluated six patients, and a tow truck was on scene.
