hroughout Victoria Waterman’s career, there have been a number of “serendipitous steps” that have happened along the way, leading her to the right place at the right time, she said. And although she has enjoyed the different roles she has held, it is her current position, as CEO of the nonprofit Girls Inc. of Worcester, where she feels not only has she made a significant mark, but that she is truly where she is meant to be.

Taking lifelong cycling passion on the road

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – Former Shrewsbury resident Greg Swinand has had a passion for cycling since he was 10 years old. He now competes at an amateur level for Team Ireland.

A 1985 graduate of Shrewsbury High School, Swinand attended the University of Massachusetts - Amherst, graduating in 1990 with a degree in economics. He eventually went on to earn a Ph.D. from Boston College.

Swinand recently competed in the Union Cycliste Internationale’s (UCI) Gran Fondo World Masters Time Trial Championship in Poznan, Poland.

He won the time-trial for male riders aged 50 to 54. The time trial was based on a distance of 18.3 km and his time was 24 mins 2.16 seconds with an average speed of 44.93 kph.

“It was very hot and there were about 600 or 700 competitors in the time trial and there were about 3,000 in the road race,” he explained.

Swinand, 52, is the son of Shrewsbury residents Lou and Sue Swinand.

His parents are very proud of his accomplishments, both on and off the bike. Greg was introduced to the sport when he and his identical twin brother Paul entered a race with their father when they were 10. They both have been cycling ever since.

“One of the things that stands out to me is both Greg and his brother’s love of cycling,” he said, adding that Greg and Paul were both on the UMa-

ss Amherst cycling team. They also spent time studying in France and raced with the French Team. Paul now lives in Evanston, Ill., and coaches a junior cycling team.

“We started racing at what they call ‘Intermediate Class’ at age 13 or 14 and then Juniors when I was 15 to 18, and then Seniors when I competed for UMass as a collegiate racer,” Swinand explained. “I competed throughout New England until I was about 33.”

He then moved to Ireland where he is an economist based in Dublin with the firm London Economics. He

is married and lives in Wicklow, Ireland, with his wife Carla and daughters Glenna and Sophie.

His work often takes him to the Middle East. He noted that while on a business trips he often packs his bike, which folds up for traveling. He also packs a turbo trainer - which allows for stationary training - in his luggage so he can train in his hotel room.

On Sept. 15 he competed in and won the All Ireland Men’s 50s RoadRace Championship.

“I’ve done all kinds of racing - there’s road, track, cyclo-cross, mountain - but generally I’m a road racer and within road there is time trial where you go against the clock by yourself - that’s kind of my specialty,” Swinand explained.

When asked how many championships he has under his belt, he said he couldn’t even estimate.

Notably, however, Swinand broke the Irish Elite and Irish Masters Hour Records in Colorado Springs, Colo., in 2016 and then again at the age of 50 in 2017 in Mexico.

or over 30 years, Lynn resident Ginger Burr has worked as an image consultant, helping women look and feel their best. Whether she’s working one-on-one with a client, leading a seminar or workshop, conducting a color analysis, or analyzing fit, her goal is always the same.

‘New-found-land’ Writer wrestles with cultural exile in debut poetry book

By Dakota Antelman Contributing Writer HUDSON - Economic catastrophe effectively exiled lifelong writer and current Hudson High School English teacher Carol Hobbs from her home in the early 1990s.

Almost 30 years later, she is grappling with that personal story in “New-found-land,” her debut poetry collection tentatively scheduled for a February 2020 release.

“It was an ecological disaster, it was an economic disaster and it was a cultural disaster,” she said of the 1993 collapse of the Northwest Atlantic Cod fishery around which her coastal Newfoundland community was founded.

Indeed, the fishery had driven the local economy and culture since the late 1400s but grew critically depleted beginning in the 1960s. In 1993, that depletion turned to decimation when the fishing output of the region dropped by 99 percent.

As she was early in her career publishing in local journals and teaching at an area school, the downturn, Hobbs said, left her with little choice but to uproot her family in search of a more stable economy.

She and her husband moved to Massachusetts where her husband secured a job as an animator at a local video game company. Even with that economic security, however, Hobbs struggled to find her place in her new home.

“I was kind of just hanging on,” she said. “I couldn’t even work here.

It took a while just to get work permission.”

Hobbs spent that interim period without work writing and establishing roots in the local publishing market. She then kept doing so even after finding a job as a college professor at Pine Manor College in Chestnut Hill, and later, as a high school teacher in

By 2004, all that writing had coalesced around two major themes: Hobbs’ longing for her home on the Canadian coast, and her feelings of exile in America. Around the same time, she prepared the manuscript of what became her soon-to-be-published book.

Contract signed, Hobbs will now have her finished copy of “Newfound-land” in hand in a matter of months. But in the end, it’s not her copy that she is thinking especially about.

Instead, 30 years after she left them in search of a future their town seemed unable to provide, Hobbs is excited for her family back in Springdale, Newfoundland to read what she describes as an ode to them, their stories, and the pain of her emigration.

“I think that once the book comes out and they see the poems, they will see the great love I have for them,” she said “…They’re going to understand what this is and how much I value their lives and our culture.”

Though the initial manuscript won the 2004 edition of prestigious PEN Discovery Prize for New England literature, Hobbs initially struggled to find a publishing house to print her book.

That struggle turned into a 15year fight, involving dozens of submissions to publishers across the country. Over the years, in response to her submissions, Hobbs saw everything from flat-out rejections to heartfelt notes from editors explaining that they loved her work but couldn’t take it. She never saw an offer to publish.

That changed earlier this year, however, when, in response to Hobbs’ latest blast of submissions, the publisher of the North Carolina-based Main Street Rag said he

Girls Inc. is a national organization with affiliates in the United States and Canada that has a central goal of inspiring all girls to be “strong, smart and bold.” The Worcester affiliate is the organization’s second oldest and celebrated its 100 year anniversary in 2016. It serves approximately 1,000 girls each year, with a mix of research-based programs and mentoring relationships designed to help young girls become more confident and develop leadership skills.

As the former president of Leading Women Mass, Waterman worked with women helping them to develop strong business, financial, and strategic acumen through a variety of leadership programs, strategic networking events, and other resources. Prior to that, her career was in the banking industry.

Directors for Girls Inc., and then to become its president, she hesitated.

“I thought, ‘I’m not qualified! Why are they asking me?’” she said. “But they wouldn’t take no for an answer.”

“So I shifted my mind-set to imagine that if they were looking for someone with a fresh set of eyes, an understanding of business and leadership, representing a role model with a passion for the mission, and a network of strong women leaders, then I didn’t know anyone more qualified than me,” Waterman said.

So she accepted the position as board president and “loved it from the beginning.”

Three years later, another serendipitous step happened when the CEO at that time stepped down when her family moved to another state.

Another member of the board encouraged her to apply for the CEO position, but again, she hesitated, not certain she was the right woman. But after much introspection, she decided to apply. And in August 2012, she was unanimously named as the organization’s new CEO. “I thought, ‘If not me, then who?’

I guess the lesson here is believe it when people tell you can do something!” she laughed.

As the nonprofit’s chief executive, she is also a liaison to the community as she advocates for young women. She serves on numerous other boards and committees and gave a very successful TEDxNatick presentation, “Today’s Girls are Tomorrow’s Leaders”.

Waterman is quick, though, to tout the important work the organization’s 15 fulltime and 45 part-time staff does.

Girls Inc. also has an incredible roster of approximately 800 volunteers throughout every part of the organization ranging from guest

speakers, to behind the scenes, to building mentoring relationships.

“We couldn’t empower so many girls and families without the volunteers,” Waterman said.

Many of the girls who have come to Girls Inc. have developed the skills to go onto further success, in continuing education and careers. But sometimes it’s not always easy and it’s not always a straight path, as illustrated by one alumni’s story, Waterman said.

The young woman had been coming to Girls Inc. for years. She was doing so well, in fact, she was named “Girl of the Year” and earned the esteemed Girls Inc. National $15,000 college scholarship.

“Then, she went to her first choice of colleges, and didn’t have a successful freshman year,” Waterman said. “When she came home, her father was disappointed because he felt she had let us down.”

“For the first time in her life, she stood up to him and said ‘Girls Inc. taught me to be strong, smart, and bold. That’s where I need to be.’”

“We welcomed her with open loving arms and helped her get back her confidence,” Waterman said.

“She ended up taking classes locally, was accepted back to the college of her dreams and graduated in the degree she set out to earn from the beginning.

“If you told me I would be doing this 10 years ago, I wouldn’t have believed it. To honor the people who saw something in me before I saw it in myself, I aspire to intentionally look for that something special in others and inspire them.”

“Attendees are able to network with others while being given valuable tools and skills to make themselves more marketable,” she added. .

Meetings include a presentation and hands-on workshop on topics relevant to career transition /job search, guest speakers, access to hiring managers, ample opportunity to network, and 1-1 coaching guidance.

The program first started out as three pilot sites in Halifax, Hopkinton and Barnstable in January 2015.

In 2001/2002, when the economy had a downturn, many were laid off from their jobs, and with the ensuing recession, many found themselves without work.

“People who thought they would soon retire, or who had purchased second homes or other luxury items had huge financial commitments with the added stress of now being out of work. I was observing all of the normal fears but layered on top of that was the big, fat, elephant in the room and that was ‘age discrimination,’” said Drevitch Kelly.

“Eighty five to ninety percent of jobs are found through networking and not by sending in a resume.

It’s challenging for the 50 to 60+ year old candidates to understand the value of networking as many of them find it uncomfortable. At the vast number of typical networking

events, you find your 20-something and 30 something people looking to leverage their careers,” said Drevitch Kelly.

Many of the regional groups are held in senior centers while others are held in libraries. Drevitch Kelly hopes that someday there will be more across the state to help meet the needs of these specific job seekers.

Drevitch Kelly also is working with companies and corporations to emphasize that this age group is ready, skilled and able to take on many of the jobs they are seeking to fill.

“We now know that employment is a really healthy part to aging.

It gives people meaning and purpose in life. I also try to educate employers with the benefits and the value of hiring mature workers,” she said.

“I find what I do to be incredibly gratifying; we like to say ‘Networking Works! Your AGE is your EDGE!’” she added. .

Mortgage – If you want to make money when you sell your home, then your sale price must be greater than what’s left of your mortgage. When you first buy your home and pay your mortgage, the first few years go towards interest rather than the principal amount. This typically means that it’s more difficult to make money off your sale if you purchased under five years ago.

Equity – You’ll want to have a lot of equity built up when you decide to sell. The amount of home equity you’ve obtained depends on remod-

eling or renovations you’ve made as well as your mortgage. If the home you bought was in tip-top shape, then it may be difficult to build equity. If you’ve remodeled the kitchen, bathroom, redone the flooring, or made other renovations around the house, then you have likely gained home equity. You can also increase your home equity by paying off more of the principal on your mortgage.

Lynn Margherio & Cradles to Crayons

Sharing the spirit of giving throughout the year

By Christine Galeone Contributing Writer BOSTON – When Lynn Margherio, the founder and CEO of Cradles to Crayons, was growing up, she and her siblings volunteered at the Festival of Trees, an annual fundraiser that Margherio’s mom helped run for the Detroit Children’s Hospital.

Each year, the family’s home and garage nearly overflowed with donations. They were eventually packed into boxes, which were hauled out to and stuffed – along with Margherio and her siblings – into the cramped family car.

“But when we arrived at Cobo Hall…the excitement would set in,” Margherio recalled. “We’d join a small army of volunteers helping to transform the cavernous space into a winter wonderland, with row upon row of magical Christmas trees, each with its own theme, colorful lights and themed holiday stations. The best time was when we got to help out selling wreaths or working in the gift shop. I remember always feeling that even though I was just a kid, I’d had an important role to play; that feeling of giving back is pretty powerful.”

Although Margherio joked that she had no idea that one day she would run an organization where the “schlepping skills” she learned then would come in handy, she also hadn’t imagined that, essentially, sharing the Christmas spirit of joy, peace and love to benefit children in need wouldn’t be limited to her earliest volunteer experiences. For more than 15 years, she’s been doing so through her national nonprofit’s mission “to provide children from birth through age 12 with the everyday essentials they need to thrive – at home, at school and at play.”

In 2000, Margherio, who was then the Executive Vice President of the Clinton Foundation’s HIV/AIDS Initiative, was inspired to start her nonprofit after spending time with her niece. She noticed all the new and gently used clothes and toys that the little girl had already outgrown. Knowing that there were many children in need, she believed that families would be happy to donate such items if it were easier to do so. So, in 2002, the Georgetown University graduate combined her business skills – from an earlier career as a business strategy consultant – and

her passion for helping people in need to establish Cradles to Crayons, www.cradlestocrayons.org.

The nonprofit now serves more than 245,000 children who are living in poverty in the United States.

Kids receive essentials such as warm winter coats, comfortable clothes and shoes and school supplies. They also receive books, toys and backpacks. All the items help to enable them to concentrate on getting a good education – which should help them break the cycle of poverty.

Because Margherio believes strongly in the value of volunteering, the nonprofit reaches out to youth in another way as well. It started its Teen Leadership Corps program for middle and high school students who want to become involved in community service. The kids learn leadership skills while supporting the Cradles to Crayons mission.

Margherio treasures the volunteers of all ages who assist the nonprofit in restoring hope to homeless and impoverished children.

“I get to be inspired every day by hundreds of kids and adults who volunteer to help power our mission,” Margherio said.

She added, “They roll up their sleeves in our Giving Factory warehouse, helping to inspect and sort donations, make outfits, and hand-select specific items to put into packages for individual boys and girls. Whether it’s the volunteer who comes once a year, our teen leaders, or our champions…they are making a real difference to children and families in our community.”

And Margherio, who lives out-

side of Boston with her husband and children, has tremendous dreams for the future.

“Our vision is that one day, every child will have the clothing and other supplies they need to thrive...”

Margherio shared. “We started in Massachusetts, expanded to Philadelphia and Chicago, and our next stop is New York City. We’d like everyone to join our movement to end clothing insecurity for kids.”

Veterans Services Center dedicated in memory of fallen Marine Michael Haskell was killed in 1983 Beirut attack

WESTBOROUGH – Framingham State University (FSU) dedicated its Veterans Services Center to a fallen alum: U.S. Marine Corps Capt.

Michael Haskell, killed at age 32 by the 1983 bombing attack at Marine barracks in Beirut, Lebanon. Family, alumni and current student veterans joined FSU administrators at a dedication ceremony Nov. 12.

A native of Beverly, Haskell’s family moved to Westborough in 1966. After graduating from Westborough High School in 1968, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and served in Vietnam the following year. He attended drill instructor school in 1971 and soon got promoted to staff sergeant, then served as senior drill instructor for multiple platoons. While taking a brief hiatus from the military to attend college, Haskell spent two summers studying the Marine Corps Platoon Leaders Course.

His strong commitment to serving as a Marine is fondly remembered by his brother, Jeffrey.

“Mike was born to be a Marine,” Jeffrey stated. “He found his place in the world when he enlisted and knew that he was a lifer from day one. It was exactly who he wanted to be.”

Haskell’s widow, Christine, cherishes an eventful few years including their 1975 wedding at St. Luke the Evangelist in Westborough as he prepared for his 1976 college graduation, and ultimately becoming a military family.

“We went to Williamsburg for our honeymoon so he could write

a term paper about Jamestown,” Christine relayed. “We were married on Friday of spring break and drove to Virginia on Saturday. I was so comfortable and trusting to follow him into a lifestyle unfamiliar to me.

Although short-lived, it was truly the happiest time of my life.”

Following college graduation, they moved from Westborough to Quantico, Va., when Haskell was commissioned a second lieutenant and attended The Basic School. In 1977, he served in Okinawa while Christine relocated back to Westborough and their son Jason was born.

Haskell was promoted to first lieutenant in 1978 and stationed at

Along the way, Haskell earned a master’s degree at Georgetown University.

Promoted to captain in 1981, he was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 8th Marines for two six-month Mediterranean deployments. On Oct. 23, 1983, Haskell was killed by the Marine barracks bombing in Beirut. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart.

A park in Beverly is named in honor of Haskell. A plaque in front of the Forbes Municipal Building in Westborough memorializes him.

After the FSU Veterans Services Center opened in 2017, a number of student veterans expressed interest in naming it in honor of an alum.

Marine Corps Vietnam veteran and FSU alum Warren Griffin of Holliston suggested Haskell.

According to the mission statement printed in the dedication program, “The Office of Veteran Services strives to aid veterans, military service members and their family members in achieving their educational and professional goals by: Providing support for a smooth transition from the military to the academic envi-

ronment; Collaborating at FSU and throughout the Metrowest community to access resources to address obstacles in achieving the goals of student veterans and their families.”

Furthermore, the Veterans Services Center offers an outlet for a comradery unique to veterans, noted Jacquelyn Wolf, FSU veterans’ services coordinator.

“It’s a place where our student veterans meet and bond,” she explained. “They can hang out together and feel comfortable, knowing that they’re surrounded by brothers and sisters. They have this great network to watch each other’s back.”

Some student veterans donated their own items to furnish the center. Wolf believes that naming the center after Haskell will personalize it even more for them.

“They’re honoring somebody who went back into the military after he graduated from our school and made the ultimate sacrifice,” she said. “That will really be significant for our student veterans.”

Commenting on how her husband would react to FSU’s tribute to him, Christine shared. “Mike would be so impressed that there is an on-campus office to help veterans and overwhelmed with pride to have his name associated with the facility.”

Meet Leonid Sukher - Man with a paddle

By G. Greg Tooker, MA Senior Games State Ambassador REGION - At first glance, Leonid Sukher appears to be a typical early senior male but perhaps in better physical condition than the average American.

Born in Ukraine in a small town between Kiev and Odessa, Sukher emigrated with his wife and other family members to the United States toward the end of the last century. They began their life in Chicago in 1998 where he got his first job. In 2000 he accepted a position with EMC and moved to Massachusetts. Sukher and his family now live in the Boston area where he is a Senior Engineer with Dell-EMC. Leonid Sukher at the Sukher has served as the Massachusetts Senior 2018 World Veteran Games Table Tennis Event Manager since 2014. At about age seven, he constructed a paddle out of scrap plywood and soon realized that he was getting pretty good at the game.

The years went by and he continued to play but did not enter competition until after he arrived in the United States. In 2007, after a routine physical exam, Sukher’s doctor told him his cholesterol was high and that he should go on medication. The alternative was to become more physically active, watch his diet and, as Sukher himself confided, “stop sitting around so much, eating popcorn.”

Over the next few years, he joined the Boston Table Tennis Center in Medford, where he became a regular. He has made many good friends, including Nicho-

Sukher likes both singles and doubles play and teamed up with his partner, Slawomir Marczak, to win his first gold medal at the National Senior Games in San Francisco in 2009. One of his most coveted accomplishments is the achievement of his 2000+ USATT ranking in 2018.

Since 2009, he has competed in several national and world competition

events, most recently at the World Veterans Table Tennis Championships in Las Vegas. He will again compete in this event in Bordeaux, France, in 2020.

Watching these senior athletes perform on the court is astounding.

Reactions are near instantaneous and the movement cat-like. It is not difficult to conclude that regular involvement in a game like table tennis can go a long way toward extending one’s physical health into later life…. even for those of us not possessing world class capabilities.

By Marianne Delorey, Ph.D. Executive Director, Colony Retirement Homes You worked so hard to get to the point of retiring. Wrapping up all those loose ends at work was exhausting! Maybe you took some time off, maybe you had a big trip in mind, or maybe you tried being a snowbird.

But now you are wondering what is next.

How are you supposed to fill your days?

What do you do now that you don’t have to do anything?

Evidence suggests that volunteering is a good choice, but what if I don’t want to walk dogs or I’m not part of a church?

There are as many ways to volunteer as there are people. One option is to help guide nonprofit organizations forward by serving on a board of directors. This idea probably sounds daunting to many people, particularly those who don’t realize what they have to offer. Yes, many nonprofits seek out lawyers or bankers. In my tenure, I’ve had several of both. Some were great. Some were ok. I can honestly say none were awful. But you know what trait my best board members share? It isn’t a particular education level or skill set, it is a willingness to help, an ability to listen, and a passion for the mission of the agency.

Nonprofit agencies come in all shapes and sizes. Some organizations work with kids or the environment, others promote arts and culture. There are nonprofit banks, clinics, schools, museums, symphonies, trade associations, unions, veteran groups, homeless shelters, and many other kinds of agencies.

Each of them has a board of directors. Some have a local board and a national board. Each board needs

different skills and talents, and over time, their needs change. For instance, organizations that need to focus on fundraising might need someone who has experience in marketing. An agency contemplating renovations needs people who are in the trades. Chances are good there is a group that needs you and what you can bring to the table.

Many retirees look around either shortly after retirement or after they’ve been out of the workforce for a while. They doubt they have much to offer because their industry has changed so much, or they are not comfortable with technology. Often, that is ok. No one board member can have all the information, that is why a typical board has 10 to 15 members, bringing to the table enough knowledge to help guide the agency’s next step. Worried about your knowledge base? When we are looking for board members, one of the aspects we seek is someone who has ties to the community we serve. Everyone lives in a community. Maybe you have lived in the same house all your life, and maybe you just moved to the area for retirement. Both perspectives can be very important to the right board.

The role of a board is to advise and direct. Most times, there is no expectation of daily involvement.

In most organizations, board positions are voluntary. We expect members to commit to attend a monthly meeting for about 2-3 hours. Each board member will usually also have a committee assignment (personnel, finance, buildings and grounds, and nominating). Committees meet as needed, just ask what is expected of you and make sure you are ready for that commitment.

Serving on a board is a win-win for many retirees. The board gets to benefit from your years of experience. You get the satisfaction of making your community a better place to live and you also get to keep your mind sharp in the process.

Should I stay or should I go?

A tough choice for senior homeowners

Should you stay in your own home? Or would you be better off financially, to sell your home and move?

These are tough questions older homeowners ask themselves when faced with rising costs of home ownership, including taxes and mainte-

nance. Many are even still making monthly mortgage payments! Coming up with the cash to meet these obligations can be difficult.

But is selling your home the only option? Few of us want to leave the place we have called home for many years.

A Home Equity Conversion Mortgage – also known as a reverse mortgage or HECM - may give you the financial freedom to choose. You can stay in your own home with no required monthly mortgage payment and have access to a monthly cash flow or have a significant reserve line of credit if money is ever needed.

Note, you are always responsible for your home’s real estate taxes, insurance, and other guidelines.

For those qualified people, selling and downsizing to a less expensive home might be the best choice.

A little-known fact by Realtors is in

that situation, you could use a reverse mortgage to purchase you new home. This allows you to not use all of your cash to purchase your home and instead gives you the option of greater cash reserves for the next chapters of your life.

For some, they desire to move but their current home faces significant repairs or a failed septic system that must be replaced before the home can go on the market. A reverse mortgage might be the solution to obtaining the necessary funds to correct the situation in order to receive the maximum sale price when the house is sold.

Another challenge is the concern of timing the sale of the current home with the purchase of the new home. One scenario is to obtain a reverse mortgage on the current home and use the loan proceeds to pay cash on the new home. This can minimize the stress of trying to time everything simultaneously.

For those unsure if they want to

move or stay in their home, I find the exercise of analyzing the moving process can be very informative and help with one’s decision. For example, I suggest to my clients who are thinking of moving to do the following: • Estimate your home’s current value. Contact a local trustworthy real estate agent to obtain a Certified Market Analysis (CMA) which will give their estimated sales price.

Maureen Willis leads nonprofit that aids immigrants

It’s important for immigrants to feel there are people in the community who want them to feel safe and wanted.

Since 2017, Willis has been executive director of English at Large, a Woburn-based organization that celebrates its 50th year in 2020. The nonprofit helps immigrants in 21 Middlesex County communities learn English through individual and group instruction as well as adapt to American culture and receive job search training.

Last year, 255 volunteers devoted 6,000 service hours as tutors, teachers of beginner English, group facilitators and committee members. They are supported by a three-person staff and an Ameri corps member who works for oneyear. Annually, the organization assists about 500 adult learners.

Helping immigrants feel welcome in their communities is another element of the program.

“It’s important for immigrants to feel there are people in the community who want them to feel safe and wanted,” she said. “We’re not a political organization but the current political climate inspires a lot of people to take action.

English at Large is a place where they can put their passions to work to help others succeed.”

Her position involves supporting the staff and volunteers to deliver services, acting as chief marketing officer and working to garner the financial resources to help carry out the nonprofit’s mission.

Willis has worked in administration, communications, marketing and fundraising for many years starting at Council of Social Concern in Woburn, an agency that provided for the basic needs of immigrants with a food pantry and childcare.

Positions as director of development at Matignon High School in Cambridge and Family and Children’s Services of Greater Lynn followed.

When her daughter left for college, Willis enrolled in Bay Path University’s one day program in Burlington, earning a bachelor’s degree in business administration and executive management in two-and-a half years.

She also received an MS in nonprofit management and philanthropy — achieving that accomplishment in one year.

Willis feels the best part of her job is the opportunity to interact with both the volunteers and learners.

“They are so inspiring as human beings,” she said. “Volunteers are so willing to share so much of themselves and their knowledge with learners…And the learners have personal stories of strength and resiliency. I admire their determination to make a better life for themselves. It makes me proud to be part of EAL.” Learners enrolled in the one-onone tutoring program are entitled to receive one year or 100 hours of service. Participants in conversation groups can stay for as long as they like.

“We try to create sort of a ladder,”

Willis explained. “A lot of learners start in tutoring and then progress with their English to a conversation group. When they are more confident with the language, they can enroll in our career access lab and that will help them navigate a U.S. job search.”

The conversation groups, she noted, consist of 10 to 12 people, all English language learners from various countries, who gather to develop speaking and listening skills.

The groups offer a “safe space,” to talk and ask questions about traditions, weather, sports and other topics. Each group is led by two facilitators, who select the activities and subjects based on the learners’ interests.

She noted that the career access lab started when they noticed a high number of learners held professional degrees from their countries but were not working in their field.

The difficulty, Willis said, was that they did not understand the process for applying and securing a job in the United States. So, the 15week program is designed to help

them get those skills and “take full advantage of their professional potential.”

This year, EAL launched a workplace English program that is employer-sponsored. Volunteers go into the businesses to assist the workers in being able to communicate with their managers.

Willis added that the biggest

challenge of working at a community non-profit is that employees aren’t paid at the same level as people who work in private industry.

“But we’re rewarded almost every day in how our work and service makes a difference.”

Social Security Administration announces online reporting for scam calls REGION - Andrew Saul, Commissioner of Social Security, and Gail S. Ennis, the Inspector General for the Social Security Administration, recently announced the launch of a dedicated online form at https:// oig.ssa.gov to receive reports from the public of Social Security-related scams. These scams — in which fraudulent callers mislead victims into making cash or gift card payments to avoid arrest for purported Social Security number problems — skyrocketed over the past year to become the #1 type of fraud reported to the Federal Trade Commission and the Social Security Administration.

To combat these scams, Social Security and the OIG will use the new online form to capture data that will be analyzed for trends and commonalities. The OIG will use the data to identify investigative leads, which could help identify criminal entities or individuals participating in or facilitating the scams. Ultimately, these efforts are expected to disrupt the scam-

mers, help reduce this type of fraud, and reduce the number of victims.

“We are taking action to raise awareness and prevent scammers from harming Americans,” Saul said.

public to use the new online form to report Social Security phone scams including robocalls and live callers, as well as email, text, and in-person scams. The form allows people to create a unique Personal Identification Number (PIN), so if OIG contacts a person about their report, they will know the call is legitimate.

“Awareness is our best hope to thwart the scammers,” said Ennis.

“Tell your friends and family about them and report them to us when you receive them, but most importantly, just hang up and ignore the calls.”

Social Security employees do occasionally contact people--generally those who have ongoing business with the agency — by telephone for business purposes. However, Social Security employees will never threaten a person, or promise a Social Security benefit approval, or increase, in exchange for information or money. Generally, the agency mainly calls people who have recently applied for a Social Security benefit, someone who is already receiving payments and requires an update to their record, or a person who has requested a phone call from the agency. If a person is not in one of these situations, they normally would not receive a call from the agency.

• Contact you to demand an immediate payment.

• Ask you for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

• Require a specific means of debt repayment, like a prepaid debit card, a retail gift card, or cash.
