AARP launches ‘Stop Rx Greed’ campaign targeting high prescription drug prices

ARP has launched “Stop Rx Greed,” a nationwide campaign aimed at lowering prescription drug prices.

The goal of AARP’s sustained campaign is to help drive down drug prices for commonwealth residents and all Americans by advocatMike Festa ing for a variety of legislative, executive, and regulatory actions at both the federal and state level.

We are calling on Congress, the Administration, and Massachusetts lawmakers to pass commonsense, bipartisan legislation to lower prescription drug prices now. This issue is a top priority for older Americans, and we are launching this campaign to focus on federal and state solutions to cut drug prices.

As part of the campaign, AARP Research conducted a national survey of likely voters ages 50 and older. The survey found that significant majorities of self-identified Republican, Democrat, and independent voters shared concerns about the high price of drugs, and support common-sense policies that will lower prices. Survey findings include: • 72 percent say they are concerned about the cost of their medications.

• 63 percent say the cost of prescription drugs is unreasonable.

• 90 percent support allowing Medicare to negotiate for lower drug prices.

• 80 percent report taking at least one prescription medication.

• Nearly 40 percent say they did not fill a prescription provided by their doctor with cost being the most common reason.

AARP is calling on lawmakers to enact solutions that will provide long overdue relief for not just older Americans, but all consumers. Those solutions must lower drug prices and not simply shift costs around in the system. Americans depend on their prescriptions. From cancer treatments to EpiPens, drug companies’ skyrocketing prices are pushing life-saving treatments out of reach for those who need them. We pay among the highest prescription drug prices in the world so drug companies can make billions. No one should have to choose between buying medicine or buying food for their families. That’s not just wrong — it’s shameful.

The Stop Rx Greed campaign includes national television, radio and digital ads, editorial content, emails to members, social media posts, ongoing advocacy and grassroots activity in D.C. and the states, and a petition calling on Congress and the Administration to take action now. As part of the campaign, AARP will push for support of a number of policy solutions at the national and state level to help lower drug prices, including: • Allowing Medicare to negotiate for lower prescription drug prices.

• Allowing states to negotiate lower prices with drug companies.

• Giving state Attorneys General authority to crack down on outrageous price increases.

• Clamping down on pay-fordelay and other loopholes that keep lower cost generic drugs off the market.

• Capping consumers’ prescription drug out-of-pocket costs.

• Preserving state pharmacy assistance programs.

ly 50 million people in our country, and nearly 466 million worldwide suffer with hearing loss. These numbers are expected to double in the next 30 years. The fact is that hearing loss, which is a natural process that occurs with each passing birthday, is unavoidable – it’s in our genes! But what is avoidable are the associated impacts of living with untreated hearing loss, including tinnitus, falls, social isolation, cerebral atrophy (brain shrinkage) and cognitive overload

(using excess brain power to hear what is being said to us). Perhaps one of the most sobering statistics about untreated hearing loss is the nearly 200-500 percent increase in risk of developing cognitive decline and dementia.

In recent years, medical reports have highlighted the benefits of early treatment to include improvements in quality of life, increase in cognitive function (including improvements in memory recall), increase in cognitive stimulation, decreased tinnitus, and the potential to reduce the risk of dementia, and possibly even slow the progression of the mind-robbing disease.

Natick Center is packed with culture

Natick - Planning has definitely paid off in the town of Natick. The town’s center - a hub of performing and visual artists, guided walks, a farmers’ market, and economic development — has been designated as a Cultural District by the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

A key participant in this transformation is Steve Levinsky, former chair of The Center for Arts in Natick (TCAN), and currently a board member of the Natick Center Associates, which oversees the Natick Center Cultural Council, a public/private effort.

Levinsky, who creates one-ofa-kind glass pieces using a hot fusing technique, and his wife, Denise Girardin, a potter turned multimedia artist, are part of a community of about 40 artists who have studios in downtown Natick. Twenty years ago, Girardin opened her studio at 3 Adams Street, which is now expanded and shared by Levinsky and four other artists.

This is a second career for Levinsky. Ten years ago, at the age of 52, he retired after working in human resources at Fidelity Investments.

“I figured out what to do by reverse engineering. I had a heat source (his wife’s kiln), so I started researching what I could do with it.

mitment to downtown Natick is reflected in their living situation. Four years ago, they sold their home after raising two daughters. They found a piece of property within walking distance to their studio and the train station. With the help of an architect, they channeled their artistic talents into a smaller house.

Levinsky is proud that during his tenure on the TCAN board the building was completed, creating a gallery and performing space upstairs. He left the TCAN board about a year ago.

“About eight years ago, I became chair of programming for the Natick Center Cultural District,” he noted. “We put together an extensive application for our Cultural District designation. In 2017, we applied for a five-year renewal, and were successful.”

The group developed a comprehensive strategic plan for 2015 to 2020.

“The Natick Mall had sucked all the commerce out of downtown Natick,” he added. “We gave it a purpose as a cultural center, with enough activities that people come out and collide with their neighbors and friends.”

That process truly took a village.

Levinsky said that he worked with two bank presidents, the headmaster of Walnut Hill School, artists, selectmen, people from town government and cultural organizations, and local business owners.

“TCAN, Walnut Hill School for the Arts, and the town’s Morris Institute Library are the three hubs of activity,” he said. “We get together every month with these anchors and other organizations to review what we are doing right, and what we can do that’s new.”

The Natick Center Cultural District has an executive director and two part-time staff. The website (www.natickcenter.org) includes a comprehensive list of cultural activities.

The Natick Farmer’s Market is held 50 weeks out of the year, on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., on the Natick Town Common in the spring and summer, and at the Common Street Spiritual Center, 10 Common St., in the fall and winter.

In July, the annual ArtWalk takes place on Main Street and Washington Street.

“Seventy artists and crafters display their work. There will be bands and food,” said Levinsky.

The organization collaborates with Natick artists during their open studio event.

“We think it’s important to recognize and pay artists. We are about to launch a call for artists to create a notable outdoor piece of art that shows the way to another piece of art or an institution. We call this way-finding art,” Levinsky said.

The Natick Center Cultural District also collaborates with the MetroWest Visitors Bureau and the MetroWest Chamber of Commerce.

“We help residents understand what’s here, and we promote the region to international tourists,” said Levinsky.

Once quiet about service, veteran tells story in new book

Region – Visibility is a major theme in the life of Vietnam War veteran and author Mike Montigny.

Overseas, he was a machine gunner, a dangerously visible member of the Marine infantry, often targeted first by Viet Cong fighters in attacks. Conversely, anti-war sentiments back home forced him to live a life of invisibility, hiding his experience abroad even as they haunted him daily.

Now, though, Montigny has finally shed that cloak of invisibility once again, telling his story in a new book and hoping to empower other veterans in the process.

“Veterans are coming forward and calling me from all over the country and saying ‘Thank you for sharing your story,’” Montigny said. “They’re saying ‘I want to tell mine before I die.’ That makes me proud to have written this book.”

The book, entitled “A Few Good Angels,” tells Montigny’s story, starting at home in Rhode Island before taking him across the planet to Vietnam and back to a home country by then politically and culturally changed by the war.

Drafted at age 19 just after graduating high school, Montigny went off to war with the shadow of a childhood prophesy hanging over him. When his mother was young, he recalled, a neighborhood elder with a believed ability to see the future told her that her youngest son, Mike, would die in a foreign war. In spite of that prophesy, however, and despite spending weeks un-

Founding producer preparing 20th Boston Comedy Festival

Boston – A native of West Hartford, Conn., Jim McCue decided in the late-1980s to pursue a stand-up comedy career and considered moving to either Boston or New York City. He chose to make Boston his home base and now performs regularly in NYC. As founding producer of the Boston Comedy Festival, he has also attracted many other comedians and their fans to Boston annually since 2000.

After studying business administration and management at Eastern Connecticut State University, he experimented with stand-up comedy at open mic nights in his home state. He moved to Boston in 1990 and landed his first paying gig as the opening act for comedic performer Ben Powers, best known for his role on the CBS-TV sitcom “Good Times.” It was an opportunity for McCue to learn how to effectively play to his audience.

“Bostonians are both blue collar and educated,” he noted. “When I

Additionally, McCue has applied lessons learned from his business studies to working in the entertainment industry behind the scenes.

“Everything you learn can be applied to comedy and promoting it,” he said. “As a comedian myself, I’m a subcontractor, a one-man company.

I do the bookings, write the material and plan my own travels. With the comedy festival, I do much of all that for about 100 comedians.”

McCue relocated to NYC in 1995. While performing the comedy club circuit in NYC and beyond, he appeared on television shows including “An Evening at the Improv” on the West Coast.

“I went to Los Angeles and did a show at the Improv,” he relayed.

“But instead of getting discovered to work in LA, I got discovered to work in Bosnia.”

Since 2000, he has entertained U.S. military troops at over 100 bases domestically and worldwide including Bosnia, Japan, Korea and Kosovo. McCue authored “EmBoston Comedy Festival | page 9

“The military became aware that comedians are very portable – we don’t need a lot of equipment,” he said. “I’ve become such a big fan of the troops.”

Also in 2000, McCue moved back to Boston to launch his ever-evolving comedy festival. The festival now runs four days at several venues and headlines well-known acts along with 48 contestants vying for the top prize of $10,000. Some of the festivals have also featured funny films.

“It’s always changing every year,” McCue noted. “We have new, upand-coming talent from all over the world. On top of that, we always have very well-respected, big-name acts. It’s a good mixture of both. We get a lot of support locally.”

For the past several years, the festival’s success has spawned year-

round tours throughout New England known as “Best of the Boston Comedy Festival” and other titles.

Contestants’ submissions are now being accepted for the 20th annual Boston Comedy Festival to be held Wednesday, Nov. 13, through Saturday, Nov. 16. McCue appreciates the chance to annually reconnect with his many comedic colleagues.

“The most fun about being a comedian is hanging out with other comedians,” he said.

Radio host helps raise suicide prevention awareness and funds

Boston/Framingham – David O’Leary began his longtime career as a radio/television personality at Boston-area stations soon after graduating from Natick High School in 1979. Now residing in Framingham, he has worked at Magic 106.7 since 2004. He has also volunteered for over 20 years in various capacities with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), now serving as board chair of its Greater Boston chapter.

O’Leary has a personal connection with the cause. His cousin Paul died by suicide at age 29 in 1995. Paul had worked as an officer for the Bristol County Sheriff ’s office and a call firefighter for the Wareham Fire Department.

Learning of the suicide evoked mixed emotions for O’Leary.

“I was sad, confused and a little bit angry at Paul,” he shared. “I didn’t know that he had struggled with any kind of mental illness. It was such a shock to the entire fam-

ily. Many people who lose someone to suicide say they had no idea.”

Soon afterward while working as the WBOS public affairs director, O’Leary became aware of AFSP through a public service announcement that he received and aired. He subsequently participated in the Greater Boston chapter’s fundraising walks, joined its advisory council and board of directors, and ultimately became board chair.

This past January, the local chapter was named 2018 Chapter of the Year at AFSP’s 14th annual Chapter Leadership Conference in Dallas. Each fall, the chapter consistently organizes one of the country’s most successful Out of the Darkness Walk fundraisers.

Additionally, each summer the national foundation chooses two host cities for the larger-scale Out of the Darkness Overnight Walk with a route typically spanning over 17 miles. Boston was chosen as a host city in 2010, 2015, and again this year.

overnight walk. He’s looking forward to walking in Boston’s upcoming overnight fundraiser Saturday, June 22, into Sunday, June 23.

“Walking overnight and finishing as the sun rises is symbolic,” he explained. “Our walks are called Out of the Darkness because we’re trying to bring the conversation about mental health and suicide out of the darkness, to remove the stigma that so often surrounds this conversation. It’s a fundraiser for the foundation, but also a chance to bring together thousands of people who share some connection to suicide or mental illness.”

Fundraisers support programs offered free of charge including “It’s Real” for groups consisting of college or college-bound students with their parents, as well as college faculty and support staff. Among other programs is “Talk Saves Lives,” a presentation for various audiences including schools, workplaces and at-risk communities. AFSP also invests substantial funds in research to save lives, O’Leary noted.

“We’re the largest nonprofit funder of suicide prevention research in the country,” he said.

“The mortality rate goes down when money is spent on finding solutions for heart disease, diabetes and so many other public health crises. AFSP will fund over $5 million this year in suicide prevention research, which is long overdue and much needed.”

Whether advocating on radio airwaves or participating in fundraising walks, O’Leary appreciates his volunteer opportunities for AFSP. “Our mental health is as important as our physical health,” he said. “I’m not alone as someone who struggles from time to time with depression. I’m happy to help spread the word that it’s OK to not be OK, to struggle a little bit with mental health issues and to encourage people to get some help.”

S

ince 2010, Lewis Evangelidis has served as Worcester County Sheriff, overseeing the Worcester County Jail and House of Correction in West Boylston. As such, he is responsible for over 1,000 inmates who are pre-trial detainees or who have been sentenced to two and a half years or less. A primary focus is the rehabilitation of those inmates, through education and resource programs, to help enhance public safety and reduce recidivism.

Evangelidis also spends a great deal of time visiting groups throughout the community, presenting important programs on substance and alcohol abuse and prevention awareness.

He is also a familiar face throughout the region, hosting and sponsoring many initiatives to give back to those in need.

in January of 2011, Evangelidis has been committed to running the Sheriff ’s Department based on the mission of professionalism and public safety.

His previous public service includes serving as an Assistant State Attorney in Miami-Dade County, Fla., and as Assistant District Attorney in Suffolk County, Mass. He also served as

a Mass. State Representative from 2002 – 2010, serving on the Joint Committee on the Judiciary and the Committee on Public Safety.

He practiced law for over 20 years as an Associate at Wausau Insurance Company and at the law firm of Pellegrini and Seeley.

“I feel it was a natural progression to move from a prosecuting attorney to Sheriff,” he said. “I

think I bring a strong business sense to the position here.”

“We ran for office on the promise that we would make this a professional organization and not make promises for money.

There is no patronage here - no politics. We have eliminated those from this organization.”

That philosophy extends to his hiring practices as well.

“Here it’s not based on who you know but rather what you know,” he said.

strong sense of compassion for the inmates at Worcester County, he is equally firm in his belief that in order for those imprisoned there to succeed, they must take accountability for their past choices. In fact, close to ninety percent of the inmates are in Worcester County because of charges related to substance abuse issues.

“We don’t judge people here… that has already happened. We are not the judge or jury,” he stressed.

“Our job is to take care of the custody part [of the inmates’ sentence].”

“We don’t let them off the hook. It’s no one’s fault but their own that they are in here,” he added. “But if they take responsibility and prove they want to make things better we will meet them halfway and give them resources to give them the opportunity to succeed when they are released.”

Re-entry begins on day 1. Inmates go through an orientation process which gives officials 10 days to assess the inmates and see

what programs would best benefit them.

The Short Stop Program offers one on one counseling as well as group counseling. Other programs tackle issues such as relapse, domestic abuse, recovery, maintenance, anger management and parenting.

Inmates may take classes to receive their GED. The jail also has a program with Mt. Wachusett Community College that al-

lows inmates to get a degree in plastics manufacturing.

One inmate, Josh, spoke of how the Short Stop Program has helped him.

“It has helped me to have a clear mind. I received five certificates from the program and studied in the Mt. Wachusett plastics program,” he said. “Staying out of trouble [in jail] has let me have more opportunities in the program.”

Prevention and education As Sheriff, Evangelidis is constantly meeting members of the public, including presenting his popular program Face 2 Face to middle school kids.

“It helps them realize that ‘one wrong decision’ can affect the rest of your life,” he said.

“We have also been ahead of the curve on vaping,” he noted.

“Juuling is an incredibly intense form of nicotine. We definitely need to educate our kids about the dangers of this.”

In 2009 as he ran for his first term as Sheriff, he had a sense that the opioid epidemic would soon become a crisis.

“It is the central issue of our time,” he said.

Giving back to the community The Sheriff ’s office also works in the community by providing inmate work crews who do projects such as painting, maintenance and light construction. One crew

works on a regular basis at St. Anne’s food pantry in Shrewsbury, helping to set up distribution boxes. All inmates who participate in these crews are low risk, Evangelidis stresses, and are always accompanied by an armed officer.

The program has saved communities throughout the county over $7 million in labor costs.

The Sheriff ’s Office has partnered with the Vanessa T. Marcotte Foundation to host women’s self-defense workshops. Each summer an annual cookout draws nearly 1,000 seniors from throughout Worcester County to the popular event. The office also provides grants to local senior organizations, hosts toy and coat drives, and provides fresh produce from its organic farm to those in need.

Each spring, Evangelidis welcomes his office’s reserve deputies to a dinner and swearing-in ceremony. Those deputies assist his office with numerous charitable events during the year, contributing many volunteer hours in the community.

At this year’s event held April

14 at Pleasant Valley Golf Club in Sutton, the guests received a very special treat – the chance to meet and have their photo taken with Pedro Martinez, the iconic former Boston Red Sox pitcher.

And to his, and everyone else’s delight, Martinez was sworn in as a reserve deputy as well.

After three guests drove up bidding in an auction to just over $6,000 on an official Martinez baseball shirt, the pitcher agreed to donate two more, so each bidder would receive one. The Sheriff ’s Office in turn made a donation of $5,000 to the Pedro Martinez Foundation (pedromartinezfoundation.com), which helps children in need in the Dominican Republic.

Massport Board of Directors In 2015 Evangelidis was appointed to the Board of Directors for the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) by Gov. Charlie Baker and two years later, was asked to take on the role of chairman. As such, Evangelidis and the board work with the agency on issues related to the three air-

Conley Container Terminal in the Port of Boston (container lines) and Cruiseport (vacation cruise ships). It also oversees the development of the Seaport area, which is fast becoming a thriving area of the city.

Massport is not a federal agency but rather an independent public authority. Board members are not paid.

“It was quite an honor to be asked by the governor to serve,” Evangelidis said. “I think the perception is that sometimes Massport just serves Boston but in reality it serves the whole commonwealth. I think my being appointed was a nod to Worcester

County and the Metrowest area of the state.”

Worthy missions Evangelidis acknowledges that as sheriff, and as Massport chair, life is busy. He credits much of his success to the people around him, but also to the missions that he is always striving for and indeed thrives on, especially at the Worcester County House of Correction.

“I have loved every moment of being Sheriff,” he said. “We have an important job to do here and I take that very seriously. I have been honored and blessed to be here.”

Making yourself at home despite the landlord

I

recently had a tenant accept an apartment sight unseen and move across the country to her new place. I personally inspected the apartment and was floored by how clean the previous tenant had left it.

Nonetheless, there was a discrepancy between the new tenant’s expectations and what she was provided. She thought the unit was a bit dusty and wanted it professionally cleaned. Now, I am the first to recognize that everyone has different standards, and that clean to one person was not always clean to another. However, even in my wildest dreams, I could never ask for a professional cleaner to wipe

down the dust on windowsills that may have only been accumulating for a few days.

I thought about this challenging interaction, and I wondered how best to improve communication between a landlord and a tenant about the condition of the apartment and expectations people might have.

Most lease clauses specify what a tenant can and cannot do to the apartment. The first, and most important lease clause about this is typically something like, “The tenant will not damage apartment and will leave apartment in same condition, reasonable wear and tear expected.”

This is also commonly written as “tenant will leave apartment in broom clean condition.”

In practice, I would argue that these standards can be translated into the following checklist: • Floors swept and vacuumed, mopped • Windows washed on the inside, outside if possible • Kitchen sink wiped down, no

odors, leaks • Appliances wiped down inside and out • Counters – no debris, wiped down • Cabinets – no smudges on handles, no tacky feeling left • Bathroom – no visible dirt, fixtures wiped down, no smell While an apartment can still be dirty even if all of the above are checked, this list is a reasonable expectation for both tenants and landlords to follow.

Beyond cleaning, tenants are also expected to not make major changes. If they do want to make major changes, they should get approval in advance. Most landlords will not complain if the tenant is willing to pay for a change and either promise to change the unit back to how it was before or if the change is seen as beneficial by the landlord.

Sometimes, the landlord will even pay for or make the changes him or herself.

In elder housing, some of the more common changes we see include having grab bars installed in the bathroom. Many of the requests we see could also be called “reasonable accommodations” and typically ensure that someone with disabilities can live in the community longer. Many elders, however, are interested in changes that are not tied to abilities, but rather conveniences.

We’ve been asked to allow them to install a ceiling fan, shelving, large pictures and mirrors, and many other items.

Despite what your lease says, don’t be afraid to ask your landlord about modifications. If you are a good tenant, your landlord

is going to want you to stay. Between fresh paint, cleaning and replacing a carpet, a one bedroom turnover can cost $2,000.

Pair that cost with the “devil you know” factor and many landlords will allow you to make changes. Many, however, may require you to use their preferred vendor (electrician or carpenter) so they know the job is not being done shoddily.

Landlords are running a business so they may care more about costs. Tenants often care about comfort because this is their home. Just like my tenant who had different expectations of cleanliness, two reasonable people can certainly disagree; you can always try not to be disagreeable in your negotiations.

ost of us dread the thought of permanently moving a loved one into a skilled nursing facility (SNF), and this sentiment doesn’t change for those who are fortunate enough to have a selection of stellar facilities from which to choose. As caregivers, even though we are fully aware of our individual limitations, it means giving up a certain amount of direct oversight and control. We also know deep down that this move is an admission that our loved one has passed a certain point in their health where returning home or resuming even a few aspects of self-care is no longer a possibility.

This transition is a direct dose of reality for everyone involved.

Caregiving Tips

Clothing and accessories

When deciding what kinds of clothing to bring to a SNF and how much, there are several practical matters that should influence your loved one’s packing list. Keep these things in mind: • Clothing must be easy to get on and off and able to withstand lots of washing and drying.

• While the temperature inside the facility is regulated to a level that would be perfectly comfortable for most active adults, the majority of SNF residents tend to be cold-natured. For this reason, versatile layers are best. Make sure your loved one has warm and comfortable sweatshirts, vests or jackets that can be worn with every outfit, as well as cozy socks that can be worn in bed and non-skid shoes.

• The number of outfits they should bring depends on who will be doing their laundry and how often. A good rule of thumb is to bring at least a week’s worth of clothing— probably more just to provide

As caregivers, even though we are fully aware of our individual limitations, it means giving up a certain amount of direct oversight and control. for additional changes that may be needed. If possible, it is helpful if whoever does the laundry returns their clothes to their closet clipped or hung together as outfits, so they are ready to wear. This is easier for many seniors than having to match separate tops and bottoms, especially if cognitive impairment is a factor.

• Accessories are part of a person’s individual style and should be encouraged! Nothing too valuable or with sharp points or edges should be brought, but if Mom has always worn bright scarves or glittery beads, make sure she has some she can wear every day. If Dad always enjoyed wearing hats, make sure a few of his favorites come with him.

• Women often want their purse close by, and men don’t feel quite right without a wallet in their pocket. Let them bring their wallet or a favorite purse if they feel uncomfortable without it. Even if outings are rare for them, it will help them retain a sense of control and independence in a world that is completely new, strange and scary. You could even put a few dollar bills or some change in it. Just make sure to take out all insurance cards, bank cards and credit cards first.

Decorative touches

• Plan to decorate their room for holidays and events. A small seasonal wreath for their door, holiday cards, and wall décor are great ways to remind your loved one of the holiday without taking up precious space on their nightstand or dresser. Window clings are an inexpensive and reusable decorative item that can be easily applied to and removed from a window or mirror.

You may have to store seasonal items that aren’t currently in use

if there is not enough storage space in their room.

• A favorite everyday door decoration is also a good cue for your loved one that they have returned to “their” room after a meal or activity. Many doors in the SNF look the same, but a

personal touch will help theirs stand out.

• Fresh flowers brighten up windowsills and dressers. Just be sure to pick low-maintenance varieties that will not create any mess or instead choose artificial versions. If your loved one is assigned to a room with a less than ideal view from their window, this small touch can make a big difference. You and your loved one can create fresh or silk arrangements together as an activity.

Vacation of waits

omebody said that happiness lies in the journey, not in the destination. Here’s hoping that your journey-happiness is happier than our journey-happiness in a trip we once took.

The plan for our scenic sojourn was this: Drive to Quebec Province via Jackman in northwestern Maine. Drive north along the Chaudière River. Reach the St. Lawrence. Drive east along the St. Lawrence.

Turn south. Re-enter the United States through Fort Kent near the northernmost tip of Maine.

Drive home.

Or, as it turned out: “Wait.”

Through Jackman, all went well.

But then, Quebec and Travaux signs. Road work ahead.

About every three feet.

We grew familiar with Arrêt (stop) and the ever-popular Lentement (slow) which was generally a good idea because the bumpy roads-under-repair could shake loose any kidney stones you happened to harbor.

The signs usually meant that only one lane was open. At the beginning of the open lane stood a portable traffic light. These lights were programmed to turn red whenever they sensed the approach of a car with U. S. plates.

Inklings

Finally they decided we might enter our own country. But wait.

First they must search our little Nissan for whatever they were searching for. They didn’t find it.

We had planned to stop for lunch in Patten, a small town south of Fort Kent. We should not have been surprised to find that the road to Patten was closed for repairs.

The detour added an hour to our journey – there aren’t a whole lot of roads up there in northern Maine – and we skipped Patten.

We experienced a getting-lost delay in Bangor. We weren’t really lost, but we thought we were, which is almost the same thing.

As we finally, wearily, at long last, approached our journey’s end, and turned into our very own street, we should not have been surprised to be greeted by a familiar sign: “Road Work Ahead.”

Somebody said that happiness lies in the journey, not in the destination.

Underneath each light, a digital clock counted the seconds until the light would turn green.

So we knew how long we would have to wait and we could view the scenery, if there was any.

Then came the rains, during what would have been the most scenic part of the trip, along the northern Chaudière, then beside the St. Lawrence. There was probably some scenery out there, but we could not make it out through the rainwater whimsically mimicking waterfalls on our windows.

We guessed we were driving along the St. Lawrence when we discerned a faraway horizon that seemed to depict a gray sky meeting a shade-darker-gray water line, as we bumped from travaux to travaux.

We managed to visit two wonderful cultural museums, both of them blessed with roofs.

They were the highlights of the trip. The only lights, unless you count the travaux stoplights.

All that rainy, halting driving dissolved our enthusiasm for car-time. So, a day sooner than planned, we headed south toward Fort Kent, eventually enjoying a sunny, quiet drive through gentle farmland, with the distances between travaux growing ever longer.

Finally, we approached the United States. But wait. The U. S. Customs agent was not at all sure that he wanted to let us in.

He instructed us to park and go inside the building to speak with another agent. We waited for half an hour while this agent researched my husband’s passport. A few years before, as Dick had returned from a business trip to England, Homeland Security at Logan Airport confiscated his passport. They said it had been reported stolen and possibly used in illegal activity, neither by him, I promise. But apparently now he had a record.

Hudson/Marlborough – Hudson High School 1979 graduates, drummer Bobby Begg and guitarist Tony Frias are euphoric because their longtime friendship continues with them once again sharing an interest in rock music. Now, their beat goes on along with lead guitarist Ed Corneau, lead vocalist Robin Edmond, keyboardist Bob Peterson, and bassist Mike Stillman in the classic-rock cover band Rumour HAZIT. Begg and Frias became buddies as classmates at the nowclosed Harriman Elementary School, which currently houses the Hudson Public Schools’ offices. While eighth-graders at the formerly-named JFK Middle School, they first played together in a band known as Euphoric.

“Bobby had drums in his cellar and I’d go over there to jam,” Frias recalled. “We’d put Kiss albums on the record player, I’d grab his mother’s hairbrush as a

microphone and sing the songs while Bobby played drums.”

“We dressed up with Kiss makeup,” Begg relayed. “We thought we were rock stars! Back then it was about all about being popular with the girls.”

Now residing in Marlborough, Begg continued as a drummer with bands up to the 1990s as well as a deejay at community

events. Frias took a musical hiatus for over four decades.

“I put down my guitar 42 years ago to raise a family and start a work career,” Frias explained.

“Then one day I was sitting in my La-Z-Boy recliner, clicking the remote control, and felt like there’s something missing.”

To fill that void, Frias contacted Begg and they began jam-

The instrumentalists are pleased that they found lead vocalist Robin Emond, a Hudson native now residing in Marlborough. Prior to joining Rumour HAZIT, she sang at karaoke venues.

“We heard that Robin was the first one to jump up at any karaoke locale and sing,” Frias noted. “She has the great charisma to sing in front of people. We all fell in love with her right away.”

They rehearsed three nights a week for eight months to prepare for their first public gigs. Along the way they developed a reper-

ming together. Begg had played in a band called Drama in the 1990s with keyboardist Bob Peterson of Marlborough and asked him to join them. Peterson had recently performed in an Eagles tribute band.

They searched via social media for other musicians to audition. Among musicians answer-

ing the announcement was lead guitarist Ed Corneau, a Marlborough native now of Milford, N.H. He’s returning to the stage after playing with bands throughout the 1970s and ‘80s.

Also discovered through auditions was bassist Mike Stillman of Natick, who still currently performs with other bands. He’s a welcomed addition because of his

“We’re getting to know each other better at rehearsals,” Begg said. “If a song that we try doesn’t fit the band, then we put it aside.”

“We all started clicking immediately as a unit,” Frias noted.

“We not only want to cover the top-40 classics, we want to do songs that people of all ages will enjoy. We’ll keep adding to our song list for an element of surprise.”

Rumour HAZIT debuted this past March at Firefly’s BBQ in Marlborough. A few weeks later they performed at the Hudson Portuguese Club. Both gigs drew capacity crowds.

“We got overwhelming support,” Begg declared. “I was taken aback by the traffic on Route 20 heading into our show at Firefly’s. It’s a great venue.”

Frias added, “Performing at the Hudson Portuguese Club was on my bucket list. I got to play there in front of my adult children and grandchildren. Now, the band is like family.”

High school students hold Dolls for Dementia drive

doul, a nursing instructor in the Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School’s Health Technologies program, takes her juniors to their clinical practice at Northborough’s Coleman House, and noticed how a lifelike doll could ease anxiety for some of the residents.

“It helped them be less anxious,” she explained. “They seemed so happy nurturing dolls, and there just never seemed to be enough to go around. After doing some research, we began ‘Dolls for Dementia’ and this is our third year. We learned that dolls aren’t for everyone, and we never just hand one to a resident. We put it down beside them while we engage them in conversation. Eventually they might touch the doll, and then usually pick it up and cuddle it. It is so heartwarming to see Dolls for Dementia | page 23

One resident cuddled three dolls, telling us how much she loved them, and they loved her.”

Faddoul’s students were quick to agree.

“They might miss their grandchildren and think they are babysitting for the day,” surmised Gianna Meninno.

According to the executive office of Elder Affairs, in Massachusetts the 65 and older population is predicted to grow to 21 percent in 2030, leading to a rise in cases of dementia or Alzheimer’s. Dementia is a collection of symptoms, such as forgetfulness, impaired judgment, loss of reasoning, and communication struggles. Alzheimer’s is a terminal disease with no known cure or diagnosis, and the most common type of dementia. There are 5.8 million people suffering from Alzheimer’s worldwide.

Alzheimer’s is the sixth leading cause of death in this country, yet the statistics of death due to heart disease have decreased by nine percent between the years 2000 and 2017, while in the same period, deaths attributed to Alzheimer’s have risen by 145 percent.

“Research has focused on plaques and tangles, but we need more research on things like blood sugar and how diet and lifestyle may factor in to a person’s likelihood of developing Alzheimer’s,” explained Faddoul. “And we all need to be more forgiving to those with memory issues.”

She noted that Marlborough, Hudson and Northborough are dementia-friendly towns, introducing an education program available for public places like restaurants and banks to help employees develop strategies to deal with their memory-impaired clients.

“My juniors have visited the other 16 technical programs here to teach them how to react with kindness, knowing that many of them will deal with the public as part of their career. We had an event at Assabet called ‘Meet Me at the Movies’ where we showed movie clips from classics and then had discussions and even some dancing,” Faddoul noted. “Then lunch was served in our Epicurean restaurant… providing a menu with fewer choices with the wait staff trained to give guests extra time to respond and interacting with plenty of kindness. It was great! The students had learned concrete strategies to increase awareness and decrease the stigma of Alzheimer’s.”

Dolls will be collected throughout the remainder of the school year and can be dropped off at the school’s front office at 215 Fitchburg St., Marlborough. Faddoul is also organizing a team for the Walk to End Alzheimer’s in September at Quinsigamond Community College.
