here is a lot happening on the “Age Friendly” movement in the Bay State, from legislative briefings to national and state grant opportunities.

In early March, AARP Massachusetts and the MA Healthy Aging Collaborative sponsored an Age Friendly Communities legislaMike Festa tive briefing with legislative sponsor state Senator Adam Hinds (D - Berkshire, Hampshire, Franklin and Hampden) to educate elected officials on the statewide initiative.

Additionally, AARP is now accepting applications for the 2019 Community Challenge grant program to fund “quick-action” projects that spark change in local communities. The grant program, which is now in its third year, is part of AARP’s nationwide Livable Communities initiative, which aims to make communities great places to live for everyone.

The Community Challenge is open to 501(c)(3), 501(c)(4) and 501(c)(6) nonprofits and government entities. Other types of organizations will be considered on a case-by-case basis. Grants can range from several hundred dollars for small, short-term activities to several thousand for larger projects. The program will accept applications in the following categories for 2019: • Demonstrate the tangible value of “Smart Cities.” This new category in 2019 will encourage communities to develop and implement innovative programs that engage residents in accessing, understanding, and using data to increase quality of life for all. The intention with this category is to encourage applicants to demonstrate new ways to engage in decision-making about housing, transportation, economic development, placemaking, infrastructure, or other community aspect.

• Deliver a range of transportation and connectivity options in the community through permanent or temporary solutions that increase walkability, bikeability, wayfinding, access to transportation options and

roadway improvements • Create vibrant public places in the community through permanent or temporary solutions that activate open spaces, improve parks and improve access to amenities • Support the availability of a range of housing in the community through permanent or temporary solutions that increase accessible and affordable housing options • Other innovative projects to improve the community AARP Massachusetts works in collaboration with communities across the state, bringing people together and providing resources and expertise to help make the Bay State’s counties, towns and cities great places to live for people of all ages.

The application deadline is Wednesday, April 17, 2019, 11:59 p.m. ET, and all projects must be completed by Monday, Nov. 4, 2019. Applications must be submitted through AARP.org/CommunityChallenge.

Last year, 129 Community Challenge grants were awarded across the country, including three in Massachusetts: • Habitat for Humanity of Greater Lowell, Inc. received grant funds to improve Greater Lowell communities by supporting the Critical Home Repairs program designed to address home repair and maintenance issues for low-income homeowners.

• The Pioneer Valley Transit Authority received grant funding to provide benches in public spaces in Springfield to assist seniors and people with disabilities in using the regional transit service.

• The Old Colony YMCA received funds to improve a hiking trail in East Bridgewater with wayfinding signage, and ADA-compliant benches and boardwalks.

In addition to the national Community Challenge grant program, the AARP Massachusetts state office will make funds available for more age-friendly grant programs soon. The Mill Contemporary Art Studios: A place where artists can shine Region – The Saxonville Mill buildings are over 100 years old, but inside these historic landmarks are 13 newly renovated studios filled with a variety of talented painters, knitters, jewelers and so much more. This mecca of creativity is managed by Amy Weader and Sorin Bica. Weader is a knitter and jewelry maker, and Bica is a painter so they understand the importance of having a space for their vision and artistry.

Several years ago, Weader chaired the Fountain Street Studios which has since been closed, and became friends with Bica.

She knew that Framingham has a large community of artists who needed new space where they could create their own style of work and showcase their pieces.

So, in February of 2018, Weader and Bica found this space and are now managing the studios. This will allow them to accommodate the artists coming from Framingham, Ashland, Southborough and

Many doctors don’t screen for dementia, but that is soon going to change, and it all starts here in Massachusetts.

W e are used to the routine things that our doctors do and say during our appointments.

Dr. Keith Darrow Nearly 90 percent of us have our blood pressure checked every time we go to our doctor. Our physicians are also in the routine of checking our other vitals and asking us questions about our general health. Nearly 70 percent of us are screened for visual impairment.

BUT… the data is shocking when it comes to screenings for demen-

tia: only 16 percent of patients are ever even asked about concerns of memory loss. This has to change.

There appear to be several reasons that doctors may avoid screening for dementia, especially since there is not much that can be done about it. Currently, there are no Food and Drug Administration (F.D.A.) approved treatments for dementia. Thus, many doctors tend to shy away from giving such a life-altering diagnosis when no treatments are available. There has even been significant pushback from many in the medical community against commercially available screening tools for genetic markers of Alzheimer’s (i.e. 23andMe now offers a health screening that will indicate genetic markers for Alzheimer’s disease).

Change is coming. Massachusetts is leading the way in how dementia care is provided to patients. In 2018, a first-of-its-kind law was passed in Massachusetts that requires all doctors, nurses, and physician assistants to get training in Alzheimer’s diagnosis

and care.

The law is intended, in part, to address a shocking statistic from an earlier survey of Medicare beneficiaries: Half of Americans with Alzheimer’s disease have not been diagnosed, and half of those with a diagnosis have not been told about it. Yikes!

Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston is developing a program to collaborate with primary care doctors in managing the illness. In addition to training, the Massachusetts law requires physicians to disclose an Alzheimer’s diagnosis to the patient or family member.

Perhaps it was the report from the European Dementia Commission report from July 2017 that has provoked changed. In this report, it was indicated that nearly 35 percent of all dementia cases are considered preventable.

The report also included a list of modifiable lifestyle factors that can help people to prevent the dementia. While many lifestyle factors, including reducing obesity, reducing cardiovascular disease

and increasing social and physical activity, are already part of a major health push in our society; what caught many in the medical community by surprise was that the early treatment of hearing loss was the most modifiable lifestyle factor for preventing dementia.

These changes to our laws reflect a growing recognition that even though Alzheimer’s is fatal, people can live with it for a decade or more. Those who have been diagnosed, as well as their families, deserve to know that, as well as knowing how much can be done to improve the quality of those years, especially when you start early.

Budding sipper enjoys camaraderie of Women who Whiskey

Region - Longbranch is the only whiskey that Debbie Higgins can drink straight up. She’s more of a mixer. Until three years ago she didn’t know the difference between scotch and bourbon, but now, after a few years of membership in the Central Massachusetts Women Who Whiskey club, she can talk mixology with the best of them.

Back in 2016, Debbie’s husband, George, found out a group called Women Who Whiskey were holding an event at the new 435 Grill in Leominster, and he told her about it. Intrigued, she decided to check it out.

According to Debbie, who lives in Leominster, the central Massachusetts chapter president, Cheryl Gaudreau, organizes the whiskey gatherings at different venues with each meeting having a different twist. Debbie wasn’t sure what to expect when she walked in the door.

“It was in a back room and

the theme was Prohibition! There were so many people there it wasn’t even funny. They had a lot of raffles, and I just decided then that I was going to sign up,” Debbie said. “There’s nothing you need to do, you just come to an event.”

ateur,” Debbie said, “I usually don’t drink it straight up. I have to have it with something, but I’m learning how to sip. There’s a science to it.”

Dubbing themselves an “experimental whiskey club for women,” the organization exists “to give members the opportunity to learn about varieties of whiskeys and cocktail culture, and to join a network of like-minded women with a taste for curiosity and strong drinks.”

Debbie has enjoyed the camaraderie she’s experienced through her attendance at the events which she said are always packed with at least 50 women. All different age groups from legal age to seniors participate.

“We had an event at the Boulder [Café] in Fitchburg, and that was one that they allowed gentlemen to join us,” Debbie said, “You couldn’t move in there. We had two ladies, grandmothers, who enjoyed themselves like crazy. It was really, really fun.”

At another event, Debbie was interested to learn about whiskey cocktails. A mixologist was there to explain what’s best to go with what. She learned that Birddog has different flavors, like Birddog Blackberry, and how one flavor goes well with seltzer while another pairs better with ginger ale.

“It’s not a lesson per say,” Debbie said, “It’s fun. It’s a lot of women socializing getting together and drinking a man’s drink that’s no longer just for men.”

Although she found she prefers her drinks mixed, she’s been game to try one neat, without ice or mixer.

“This Longbranch is the only one that I can drink like this [neat],” she added, as she slowly tilted her glass and took a tiny

swig. “Longbranch happens to be the actor Matthew McConaughey’s baby, he’s the one who put this together for marketing, so no wonder I like it.”

Although Debbie has enjoyed the solidarity of drinking whiskey with women, she said the best part that’s come out of her membership is that she got George into drinking it and now they go around touring distilleries together.

“George was always a beer drinker and now he’s become a whiskey connoisseur,” she said.

“Because of me, I believe, I’ve created a bourbon monster!”

Debbie and George attended the Bourbon Legends Boxcar Tour in New York City, and the two have become ambassadors for Maker’s Mark.

“We have our names on a barrel that’s going to be mature in the year 2024,” she said, “Maker’s Mark has a big ceremony if you choose to attend when they open your barrel.”

Debbie likes that her experience with Women Who Whiskey has led to something she now shares in common with her husband.

“We’ll go shopping for new products, new bourbons to try, always looking for something new to try at a bar.”

She and George now enjoy cocktails at home, where they’ve acquired bulbous-shaped Glencairn glasses that allow them to smell the nuances whiskey offers.

They also have trays to make special ice cube balls that don’t melt so quickly and water down a drink.

In May the couple is slated to go on the bourbon trail in Kentucky to tour four distilleries.

Jazz musician nears 30 years managing Worcester’s WCCA-TV

Worcester – Jazz musician Mauro DePasquale of Worcester worked his first professional gig at age 13.

While entertaining as a singer and pianist in recent years with the Jazzed Up Trio, he has integrated his performing and behind-thescenes skills since 1990 as executive director of Worcester’s public-access WCCA-TV cable channel 194 and streamed live online.

“The cool thing about my job is that I get to do a little bit of everything,” he said. “In addition to managing a corporate environment, I participate in the actual ground-level production.”

DePasquale took piano lessons as a young elementary school student. Soon afterward, he became fascinated with stage-set design while on school field trips to Boston arranged by Sarah Caldwell, an acclaimed opera conductor and impresario at the time.

Piano lessons paid off when a 13-year-old DePasquale began getting hired to play at wedding receptions. His musical taste and job searches changed after hearing The Beatles.

“I really wanted to play rock and roll,” he recalled. “Luckily, I had really encouraging parents. My father would take me to auditions or to jam with different groups.”

After graduating from high school in 1973, DePasquale formed his own band and toured New England. Married at age 20 and beginning to raise a family, he booked gigs within a 30-minute radius of their home.

“I went to college later because I had a family and tried working different kinds of jobs,” he explained.

“The music kept pulling me in, so I kept following it.”

DePasquale earned a bachelor’s degree in music at Anna Maria College in 1980 and a master’s in music composition at Boston Conservatory in 1982. He created television and radio jingles while working freelance videography jobs.

In the late-1980s, he began volunteering at WCCA-TV by helping with background music and other production tasks. Additionally, he served on its board of directors.

“They asked me to be the WCCA executive director in 1990 and I’ve been there ever since,” he relayed. “I fell in love with its mission of being a nonprofit community station. It’s a great way to contribute to the community and utilize whatever talents I’m lucky enough to have.”

He and a staff of 10 help community members produce television programs. Worcester-area residents are also welcomed as guests on the community awareness program “Soapbox.” DePasquale occasionally hosts “Soapbox” and the program “Band Edge,” which spotlights local bands, solo singer-songwriters

and instrumentalists of all genres.

As a longtime professional musician, DePasquale understands the impact of getting exposure on television.

“It’s important and encouraging to have an opportunity to get people to hear your music,” he said.

“It’s amazing the amount of talent that’s out there.”

earlier jazz group known as The Johnny Dollar Experiment evolved into the current Jazzed Up Trio and sometimes Jazzed Up Duo. Among venues where they regularly perform are Casta Diva, Northborough; Cheng Du, Westborough; Medusa Brewing Company, Hudson; and Uxlocale, Uxbridge.

“We blend jazz classics and American Songbook favorites,” he noted. “When we perform, it’s especially nice to see other people appreciate the same kind of music that I value.”

DePasquale and a committee are currently planning the first Central Mass Jazz Fest as a WCCA-TV fundraiser to be held Saturday, June 22, noon to 7:30 p.m., at Cristoforo Colombo Park (East Park) in Worcester.

“It’s fun for me to work with others and be as creative as I can within the confines of my administrative work,” DePasquale said. “I thrive on this kind of creative environment.”

Timely play to culminate Zeitgeist Stage’s 18-year run

Boston – Oxford English Dictionary describes “zeitgeist” as “The defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time.”

Continuing a tradition of producing timely-themed shows, Boston’s Zeitgeist Stage Company is culminating its 18th and final season by presenting the world premiere of “Trigger Warning,” a drama with a unique perspective on a school shooting.

Zeitgeist commissioned Jacques Lamarre of Connecticut to write “Trigger Warning.” Lamarre resides near Newtown, where the 2012 fatal shootings took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Helming the production is David Miller, Zeitgeist’s founding artistic director.

“Politicians didn’t take action after the killings of a bunch of kindergarteners and first-graders,” Miller noted. “Offering thoughts and prayers isn’t enough. We need

to do something about gun control in the United States. We need to be persistent in that endeavor.”

This past fall, Miller directed Zeitgeist’s 2018-2019 season opener: “Vicuna,” a political satire about a Trump-like tycoon turned presidential candidate. Throughout Zeitgeist’s 18-year run, Miller’s productions have consistently earned recognition from Boston Theater Critics Association’s Elliot Norton Awards and Independent Reviewers of New England Awards.

Yet, Zeitgeist will close following “Trigger Warning” due to recent declining audiences and rising production costs. This closing follows the end of other Boston fringe theaters including Whistler in the Dark in 2014 after nine years, and Bad Habit Productions in 2017 after 10 years.

“Awards and nominations don’t sell tickets,” Miller said. “Producing with a fringe theater company is a very marginal existence where you don’t get a lot of support from grants and foundations. You’re living on Play | page 9

After Miller applied for a grant for new works offered by the Boston Foundation, he met with Lamarre to discuss potential projects.

Lamarre expressed interest in writing a play with a theme similar to the book “A Mother’s Reckoning”

by Sue Klebold, parent of one of the Columbine shooters.

Although Zeitgeist didn’t receive the grant, they decided to write and premiere a play about a school shooting from the viewpoint of a teenage shooter’s family. The play’s shooter dies with other students in the rampage.

“The family had tried everything to help him – from spiritual counseling to therapists to medications,” Miller explained. “The play offers a unique perspective of a family that’s grieving, but not allowed to do it publicly because they’re shunned.”

On Feb. 26, a “Page to Stage” discussion took place at the Boston Public Library South End Branch.

It was an opportunity for “Trigger Warning” cast members to present scenes of the new script, followed by a discussion about the process of

preparing a premiere production.

“The cast read a couple scenes and then we talked about the play for the assembled group,” Miller said.

“Everyone thought it’s very timely and the perspective is worthwhile.”

The “Trigger Warning” cast of six features four Zeitgeist veterans: Steve Auger, Shelley Brown, Kelley Estes and Naeemah White-Peppers. Making their Zeitgeist debut are Liz Adams and Lilly Brenneman.

Miller is drawing on experience from directing another play involving a school shooting, “Punk Rock” presented by Zeitgeist in 2013. It won Elliot Norton Awards for Outstanding Director – Small Theater Company, and Outstanding Production – Fringe Theater Company.

Remembering her childhood home – lost to the Quabbin Reservoir

Hudson - Some people think that remains of whole towns were left on the floor of the Quabbin Reservoir. Phyllis Hamilton Frechette, 94, knows for sure that everything was wiped out. She was there.

From 1930 to 1939, four towns in the Swift River Valley - Dana, Enfield, Greenwich and Prescott - were leveled and then flooded to create a water supply for Greater Boston.

Frechette remembers that buildings and the railroad - the “Rabbit Road” - were disassembled; cemeteries and monuments were moved; and trees and brush were cut down by men from Boston who were called “woodpeckers” for their lack of skill. Her life, along with the lives of 2,700 others, was changed forever.

In 2011, Frechettte published a small book, “Remembering Millington: A Village Swallowed Up by the Quabbin Reservoir.” It’s

more about her recollections of the town than the Quabbin project.

The book contains a handdrawn map and details about the occupants of every house and every business in Millington. Frechette, along with her parents and four siblings, lived in a house that had been built by her grandfather.

“The whole main street was all family,” she recalled. “I clearly remember the house that we lived in.”

She describes the wood stove in the kitchen, lack of hot running water, pages of a Sears catalog used in place of toilet paper, a barn near the house, and a big garden where they raised produce for themselves and to sell at a roadside stand.

The village included a brick one-room schoolhouse, a general store, gristmill, “Moore’s Hall,” and a pond.

Her father had a florist supply business. He collected ferns and other materials, which he shipped by train throughout New England Home | page 11

and New York. He hired men to work in their home to assemble Christmas ornaments.

She said in her book, “I remember hearing the wooden spools of wire tap, tap, tapping on the wooden tables as he would wound greens with wire for wreaths or to string for roping.”

In contrast to her specific recall about her home and Millington, Frechette said, “I don’t remember my parents saying much about what why the towns were being disincorporated and flooded. It was all about what Boston wanted. One-by-one, everyone, including my best friend, left and everything shut down.”

Her family was the last to leave their village. Frechette was 14.

“After the hurricane of 1938, the powers that be would not open the roads. We couldn’t get out except for roads that my father hacked his way out. Our house was taken by eminent domain.

We had to move, and Millington didn’t officially exist at that point,” explained Frechette.

At the time of the move, Frechette was a student at a nearby

school in New Salem. At the end of a school day, she was taken to her grandmother’s house in New Salem, three miles from her home in Millington, which she never saw again.

“My father bought the Millington general store and moved it to New Salem where he turned it into our house. He and my brother went back to Millington to bring it to New Salem, piece by piece.

That way we held on to part of our past,” she said.

Frechette went on to earn a teaching degree from Framingham State College (now University), and a master’s in education.

She taught for 32 years in the Newton Public Schools and East Providence, R.I. She has three children, six grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

In 1995, at the age of 75, she graduated from the Andover Newton Theological School in Newton, and was ordained in the United Church of Christ in Canton.

She now lives on Lake Boone in Hudson.

“It’s such a peaceful place on the water,” she said. “I’m going to stay here forever.”

Collings Foundation opens interactive American Heritage Museum

ince 1979 the Collings Foundation, under the directorship of Bob Collings and his wife, Caroline, has brought history to life through the interactive shows it presents throughout the country. Using transportation-related events such as antique car rallies, vintage airplane rides, and races where different types of vehicles compete against each other, guests have been given a front row seat to history. Unlike static displays, this type of exhibition puts man and machine through their paces inviting viewers to experience history as if they were actually there.

more than 80 authentic military vehicles that saw live duty in wars and conflicts ranging from WWII through the current War on Terrorism. Included in the museum are a large number of vehicles from the estate of the late Jacques Littlefield of Portola Valley, Calif.

Prior to his death, Littlefield was considered one of the premier collectors of military vehicles in the United States.

Collings, who along with son Rob, oversees the new museum, noted that it is set up to give visitors a truly memorable, interactive experience.

Experiencing history first-hand Upon arrival, visitors will enter a small theater where they will view a brief but compelling film that paints a vibrant portrait of America’s experience in the American Revolution and the Civil War. Next, they will enter a simulated, life-size World War I “trench” to get a sense of what soldiers experienced in Saint-Mihiel, a major battle that took place in France in 1918. Through the use of customized sound, lighting and visuals visitors can understand the terror experienced by soldiers of the day.

Next, guests will enter the “War Clouds” exhibit where they will watch a short film that highlights the period between the two world wars, leading to the rise of Adolph Hitler and the Nazi party. One of the major artifacts on display in this section is a German Panzer 1A Light Tank, the only one of its kind on display in North America. There is also a rare and

impeccably restored Mercedes G4 staff car, a vehicle favored by the Nazi high command.

Following the video presentation, a screen rises to reveal a balcony overlooking the main hall where 84 accurately restored military vehicles are displayed based on a chronological timeline. The display traces the history of military equipment through World War II, culminating with contemporary conflicts including the current War on Terrorism.

The A.H.M. is much more than a tank museum, Collings stressed. Although there are many tanks, the collection features everything from landing craft, ambulances, aircraft and anti-aircraft gunnery, and guided missiles. One of the center pieces of the collection is an actual SCUD missile

and launcher, along with more recent equipment like tracked, remote control robots that were used in recent anti-terrorism conflicts. All of the vehicles are authentically restored and were used

Other important artifacts on display include an actual section of the Berlin Wall and a twisted piece of beam recovered from the World Trade Center after the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

As the vision was taking shape, the Collings’ worked with BPI Boston Productions to create the video presentations and the large photo murals that are displayed throughout the museum.

“These help make the experience more personal by putting the vehicles into the context they were in,” Collings said. “Rather than just looking at a vehicle, you get a sense of what it was like then.”

Foundation, said that they realize there will be diverse groups eager to visit the museum so they plan that multimedia will eventually be geared to the group’s particular level of interest and age. Docents will be on hand to give tours and touchscreens at each vehicle will provide relevant information. In the future, the museum hopes to offer to school groups personalized content that will match with the particular period or conflict they are studying.

Although the museum has yet to open there has already been a swell of interest from military vehicle aficionados as well as those who are eager to come volunteer and help maintain the vehicles on display, Collings noted.

The fortuitous Littlefield meeting The museum would not be possible if were not for a very substantial gift from the estate of the late Jacques Littlefield. A wealthy California engineer, Littlefield had a deep passion for military vehicles. His collection, the Military

Vehicle Technology Foundation, was considered one of the finest in the world.

Collings noted that it was his son, Rob, who had first developed the relationship with Littlefield on a visit to California. Having very similar interests, Collings half-jokingly suggested that Littlefield might want to loan a tank to the Collings Foundation following a shared flight in a P-51 Mustang.

Following Littlefield’s untimely death, the Collings’ inquired about purchasing a vehicle from the renowned collection.

“They said they wouldn’t sell

us one,” Collings said. “But rather, they wanted to donate the entire collection to us.”

That fateful decision began a true labor of love for the Collings’ that led to the creation of the A.H.M. With the help of a team of experts, the Collings’ assessed the collection for the most historically significant pieces and then sold off duplicates. Those proceeds were then used to fund the new museum in the hope that future generations can develop a deeper appreciation for that massive cost of war, not just in resources but in human life and potential.

“We hope [ Jacques] would

be proud of how we have moved forward to create this museum so that everyone can see these vehicles for themselves,” Collings said.

The A.H.M.’s mission Although some might view a military museum as a tribute to war, the goal is quite the opposite.

Collings is firm in his view that the new museum does not glorify war but rather, illustrates history in a way that mere words cannot.

“War is horrific – we are not encouraging it – just reporting it,” he said. “Hopefully everyone will have a sense of the magnitude of what these conflicts were and their lasting impact on our country’s history. “ The A.H.M. will have its grand opening on Thursday, May 2 and open its doors to the public on Friday, May 3. Hours of operation will be open Friday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. To visit the museum, use the 568 Main St, Hudson address. There is ample free parking.

The journey to…and back…from grief

M

y mother went to church every day, sometimes for the companionship of her fellow parishioners, but often because she knew, after so many years on this planet, that faith was the only way she could contend with the insecurity that life offered. She did not always agree with the doctrine, but she told me it was easier to look past the failings of an imperfect church than find a new one.

She believed, she accepted, and she forgave.

When my mother had a sudden stroke, it was not clear if she would make it through the night.

The hospital kept her in a medically induced coma while they tried to reduce the swelling in her

– Author unknown brain. They woke her on occasion to check her vitals and cognitive functions. It was terribly scary for us, of course, but it was also scary for her as she was roused over and over again in a strange setting, not always remembering where she was or why she was there.

We wanted her to have comfort, so I called her parish at the first opportunity. I was told that the priests did not visit people if the hospital was in Boston. I checked Google maps. It was 14 miles from the parish door to the hospital. I asked again. “Surely, you must visit the people who go to church every day. Isn’t that part of your ministry?” “Sorry, just our policy,” they answered. Family

and friends went into overdrive, calling other churches, regardless of denomination, and asking hospital chaplains and the like to come say a prayer, anoint her, or just hold her hand. These others came out in droves. We were relieved, of course, but we were also very angry that her church had failed her.

And in retrospect, I think the failure was a blessing in disguise for us. It gave us something to focus on and it united us in our outrage. A nameless, faceless church kept us absorbed and brought us together as a family.

During times of trial and grief, we are told to expect anger as part of the process. But I think we expect anger to be purer and less complicated. It is not. After my mother passed, my anger shifted to those few people who did not come to the services or (in my mind) adequately acknowledge our loss. Directing my anger toward others was futile.

They could not understand my loss or how they failed me. Worse, it could have driven a wedge between us. Anger is often a necessary part of grief, but it can do more harm than good.

In my role, I often see family members torn apart by their grief and anger to the point that they can’t help each other through it.

Celebrating 35 Years in Business

And sometimes, people can’t see that they are angry because they are grieving. I hope that those of you who have felt the sting of anger develop enough insight to realize the cause. This awareness does not excuse bad behavior, but it puts it into perspective. Sometimes, nobody can do the right thing for those who are grieving.

We are all doing our best, and sometimes that is just not enough.

In your time of need, I wish you all a “church” to be mad at – some nameless, faceless entity that can direct your anger away from friends and family. Or, better yet, like my mother did with her church, I wish you the ability to look past the failings of an imperfect family rather than find a new one.

Moving into a long term care facility Part one of a three part series

ost of us dread the thought of permanently moving a loved one into a skilled nursing facility, and this sentiment doesn’t change for those who are fortunate enough to have a selection of stellar facilities from which to choose. As caregivers, even though we are fully aware of our individual limitations, it means giving up a certain amount of direct oversight and control. We also know deep down that this move is an admission that our loved one has passed a certain point in their health where returning home or resuming even a few aspects of self-care is no longer a possibility.

This transition is a direct dose of reality for everyone involved.

Caregiving Tips

Before moving in Be sure to visit the room your loved one will move into (or one very similar to it) to get a feel for the amount of floor and storage space there is. There must be enough room to maneuver a wheelchair or other mobility aid and for caregivers to safely transfer and care for your loved one.

Check to see if the facility will remove and store the provided nightstand, chest or chair so that personal pieces of furniture can be brought in. If this is an option, make sure that none of these items encroach on a roommate’s space or limit mobility within the room. Asking for a floor plan and measurements (or taking your own) will help ensure your loved one’s belongings fit without crowding the room.

Ask questions about items and services the facility provides that are included in the monthly fee. The following are common questions that can reveal a great deal about what supplies may need to be purchased or left at home. It can also expose services

• Are bedding and towels provided?

• Is the laundering of linen included?

• Can personal laundry services be added for an additional fee?

• Is a corkboard or whiteboard provided for posting calendars, reminders and pictures?

• Do they provide a wall clock, TV or any personal care products?

• Can you bring a small refrigerator?

Every skilled nursing facility (SNF) is different. No family member wants to receive an expensive surprise when they get the first bill and discover that all the services they thought were included were optional extras.

What to pack Aside from making the decision to move your loved one into a SNF, helping them pick and choose what to pack and what to purge is one of the most difficult parts of this transition. Caregivers often help their family members sort through homes, garages and storage units full of belongings, furniture and family heirlooms.

Most seniors have been collecting personal items for decades, and it can be difficult for them to simultaneously “lose” their home and most of their possessions.

Many caregivers enable their loved ones to hold onto some family heirlooms, seasonal cloth-

ing and décor, valuables, and other important belongings by storing them at their own home, dispersing them among trusted family members or renting a storage unit. This helps elders feel they still have access to their

possessions or at least that these things have been passed on to individuals who will cherish and respect them.

Unnecessary pain – From NO to YES

have a new best friend, Bill Noyes. When Bill meets someone, he’ll say his name is spelled “No Yes” but is pronounced “Noise.”

Bill gave me permission to share his story about going from “No” to “Noise” to “Yes” with the hope he’ll be able to help others.

young. A proud veteran. Met his sweetheart in her teens. Enjoyed raising their children, motorcycle racing, playing cards, and entertaining their many friends. Bill lived happily married in the same home for over 50 years until sadly he lost the love of his life to cancer three years ago.

Bill loves his home and all the fond memories but was becoming increasingly worried about having the cash flow and resources to remain financially independent. Increasing real estate taxes, medical expenses, and living costs were outpacing his fixed income of social security and a small pension. Bill wanted new siding, to be able to pay off a small home equity line, and, most importantly, to feel less stressed about not having enough money if ever needed.

ies show that millions of older homeowners’ desire to live independently in their homes but are concerned on how to financially achieve this goal. Bill took the initiative to look at obtaining a mortgage.

Without his wife’s social security income, Bill no longer qualified for a traditional mortgage or new bank home equity line and, even if he did, he would not be able to afford the monthly payments. And that is when Bill thought about obtaining a reverse mortgage.

As I spoke with Bill, his name suddenly epitomized the journey senior homeowners face when contemplating a reverse mortgage. We chuckled about his name Noyes — “No, Noise, Yes.” NO. Bill asked his friends and family about what they thought about reverse mortgages. It seemed everyone had heard about them and everybody said NO — they’re bad, you lose your house to the government, they’re expensive, you must make a monthly payment, there’ll be nothing left to leave to the kids, and it’s only for desperate people.

NOISE. For Bill, if that was all true then why would anyone would get one? Bill started searching the internet about reverse mortgages. He even regrettably filled out information on the web to only be bombarded with calls from salespeople. Bill shared how the TV infomercials, telemarketing calls, and junk mail had created so much “noise” that he felt overwhelmed. Fortunately, Bill read an article about how our self-funded nonprofit charitable organization, Helping Hands Community Partners, focuses on educating people about senior housing options and, when appropriate, may arrange re-

verse mortgages. Bill gave me a call and we agreed to meet.

YES. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Bill’s life story and future goals. We invested over three hours discussing the pros, cons, and myths about reverse mortgages. I had the pleasure of explaining how a reverse mortgage gives the option of never having to make a monthly payment, ability to increase monthly cash flow, providing funds for home repairs, and perhaps the most important feature – a reverse mortgage credit line that grows over time giving access to cash if ever needed. Bill’s response was a reverse mortgage is the solution to solving his current cash flow needs and a financial safety for the future.

Bill shared how grateful he was to finally get objective reverse mortgage information that allowed him to make an informed decision on his housing options to fulfill his housing objective.

And then Bill made a profound observation – how there must be so many older homeowners who are or will be faced with financial struggles who don’t know reverse mortgages exist or how they work. Bill said what a shame that many people are living with “unnecessary pain” not knowing a solution is readily available. I responded that my and Helping Hands Community Partners’ mission is just that – educating people about housing options.

Ukulele nervous

W

hy was I so nervous?

The world would not end – even my tiny corner of it would not be endangered ­— if I could not learn to play a ukulele.

But I approached my first uke class with extreme jitters.

I had been podering the ukulele for a long time. I wanted to play an instrument that was portable, which cannot be said for the one instrument I knew how to play, my piano. Wind instruments were out; I don’t have enough wind. Violin family? No appeal. Guitar?

Too big. Banjo? My favorite to listen to, but too hard to learn.

So, the uke.

As I was developing this thought, I was in a secondhand book shop when a young man came in quietly, privately strumming a ukulele. He knew only one chord, but such a sweet chord. Later I passed a cluster of high-schoolers sitting on the steps of the theater downtown. One played a ukulele, such a homey, friendly tone.

The universe was telling me to tr the ukulele.

I hadn’t realized that the little ukulele is a Very Big Thing. Ukulele groups are popping up all over.

Our teacher was a kind, patient young woman who wanted us to be comfortable. She taught us three chords. We advanced, almost boldly, from “Mary Had a Little Lamb” to “Hot Cross Buns.”

Nobody was called on to solo. We relaxed a little.

I did not need as much courage to attend Lesson Two. I bought a ukulele. I learned to play, not well, but well enough. You don’t have to be an expert strummer to enjoy playing the ukulele.

I joined a newly forming ukulele club. At first, we played together just for fun. Now we’re receiving invitations to perform in public. With strangers watching.

I am so nervous.

Here I am. I know nothing about this.

Teach me. I voluntarily submit to making mistakes and feeling stupid.

Internet. Classical music has been arranged for ukulele. The uke has traveled far beyond the plinkyplink associated with Hawaii or Tiny Tim. I was participating in a cultural phenomenon, if only in my head.

How could I learn to play?

Just then, our adult education program offered a beginners’ ukulele class.

I did not sign up.

I’m an expert procrastinator when it comes to trying something new and, therefore, a little scary.

A friend took the class. She had fun. And she learned to play.

When the class was offered again, I forced myself to join. I borrowed my friend’s extra uke. I said I would return it when I felt comfortable enough to buy my own, or when I discovered that my attempts were hopeless and I could not learn to play.

I was not the only nervous student that first night. In the parking lot before class, I pulled up next to an SUV. As I left my car, the driver of the SUV got out carrying a ukulele. She had been waiting for somebody — anybody — with a ukulele. She was too nervous to go in alone.

We’re grown-ups, after all. And that, I realized, is the problem.

As grown-ups, we’re supposed to know how to do stuff. It’s hard to admit that we don’t. We fear feeling foolish as we stumble trying to learn.

Children must constantly learn new skills, in the presence of other children, and aren’t afraid to try. To grown-ups, learning is especially daunting when there are other grown-ups as witnesses.

As grown-ups, we can live a whole successful life without ever learning to do something new.

It’s tempting.

‘Boston’s favorite song duo’ brings ‘American Classics’ to ‘burbs

Bedford/Cambridge – Hailed by the Boston Globe as “Boston’s favorite song duo,” Ben Sears and Brad Connor continue to bring musical entertainment to suburbs as producing directors and performers in their 24th season of “American Classics.”

Their 2018-2019 “American Classics” season will culminate with “George M. Cohan 2019 Revue” on Friday, April 26, 7:30 p.m., at First Parish Church in Bedford; and Sunday, April 28, 3:00 p.m., in Pickman Concert Hall at Longy School of Music in Cambridge.

Sears and Connor began their 30-year collaboration as the singing duo Ben & Brad on a WGBH public radio program in 1989. In 1995, they were among a few founders of the Boston Association of Cabaret Artists. The duo appreciates longtime support from Boston’s Club Café since

its opening in 1983.

There, Ben & Brad celebrated their collaboration’s 25th-anniversary show in 2014.

“Club Café has nurtured the Boston cabaret community very well – including us,” Connor noted. “After so many years, Club Café is not only soldiering on, but making a success of it.”

In the mid-1990s, they combined efforts with vocalists Mary Ann Lanier and Sylvie Stewart, aka The Camptown Ladies, and pianist Margaret Ulmer. Their mutual musical passions led to debuting “American Classics” concerts series at Swedenborg Chapel in Cambridge.

Since 2000, Sears and Connor have shared stages alongside other performers in shows with various themes throughout annual “American Classics” seasons.

“Brad and I started putting together concert versions of forgotten musicals,” Sears explained.

“Over the years, we keep finding unknown songs by famous songwriters. We’re excited to have this forum to mix these songs with standards.”

Connor added, “This repertoire is our passion, not only to bring to audiences, but also for a lot of great Boston performers.

“American Classics” has been presented annually at Cambridge venues. For many years, its second performance space was Follen Church in Lexington. This season marks the first time that “American Classics” is Boston’s favorite | page 21

“We go to suburbs to attract audiences who don’t want to drive into the city,” Sears said.

“The suburban experiment began about 15 years ago and has continued.”

When not on the road, Ben & Brad entertain at popular Boston venues. In 1997, they were the first cabaret act featured at the historic landmark now known as Cutler Majestic Theatre at Emerson College. A few years later, they serenaded guests arriving at Wang Center for the Performing Arts prior to screenings of the film “White Christmas.”

In 2012, they and “American Classics” castmates sang the national anthem at Fenway Park during its 100th anniversary.

this past November with the 1918 musical revue “Yip Yip Yaphank.” Written by composer-lyrist Irving Berlin while an Army recruit stationed at Camp Upton in Yaphank, N.Y., the revue’s songs range from the comedic “Oh! How I Hate to Get Up in the Morning” to the solemn “God Bless America.”

In February, the duo and castmates performed “Songs from After the War” with upbeat tunes including “April Showers,” “Chicago” and “Fascinating Rhythm.”

Sears and Connor are looking forward to paying tribute to an iconic showman with their April show titled “George M. Cohan 2019 Revue,” highlighting his patriotic favorites “Over There,” “Yankee Doodle Boy” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.”

“Cohan’s career was at a pique during the WWI era,” Connor noted. “It makes sense for us to tie-up this season with a George M. Cohan tribute.”

Isabelle Chang – role model listed in Who’s Who

Shrewsbury - Isabelle Chang, 94, and her late husband, Min-Chueh (MC) Chang, who co-developed the birth control pill and, through his research, set the stage for in-vitro fertilization, both contributed to society in ways that cannot be measured. While Isabelle’s efforts enabled MC to work long hours and pursue his breakthrough research at the Worcester Foundation for Experimental Biology, through her career and volunteerism, she herself contributed greatly to their hometown of Shrewsbury.

Isabelle Chang is proud to be listed in the Marquis Who’s Who as a “leader in the education industry,” and to have received their Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award.

Chang’s parents, then unknown to each other, immigrated to the Boston area from Canton in the late 1800s.

Thanks to a matchmaker, they went on to parent nine children, whom they raised in Chinatown. Isabelle’s father, a tea merchant, was the first to purchase a building in their community.

“My father only finished high school, but he valued education so

Isabelle Chang much. He always had a book in his hand,” Chang said.

She was the fifth child born, but the first to fulfill his dream. She graduated from Simmons College with B.S. in library science in 1946. She remembers meeting Eleanor Roosevelt in the school’s cafeteria.

“She saw me when she was having lunch and asked me to sit at her table. I was shivering the whole time, and said nothing,” recalled Chang.

Next, she focused on oriental studies in a master’s program at Yale University. While in New Haven, she met MC’s best friend. He was interested in her, but it was not mutual. It turned out that she was interested in MC.

“MC discouraged me from completing my program. He told me that people in China would know more than me, and there was no point in studying about the Orient. He invited me to go to a meeting with him in Milan. I said that I wasn’t that kind of woman. He said, ‘Of course, we’re going to get married.’ That’s what happened, and I never finished that degree,” Chang said.

In 1948, Isabelle and MC settled in a house in Shrewsbury within walking distance to the Worcester Foundation. Their children were born in 1949, 1952 and 1955.

“MC said that every woman needs about three years to recuperate from childbirth,” explained Chang.

After serving as a Shrewsbury Library trustee from 1958 to 1959, Chang was asked to be the library director.

“As a Chinese woman, I was surprised to be asked,” she said.

She held the director’s position from 1964 to 1969. During that time, she earned a Master of Arts in English at Clark University.

In 1969, with three school-aged children and MC working long hours, she transferred to the Shrewsbury Public School System. “My hours were

better. I was asked to set up the middle school library, and then the high school library. I worked at the middle school library until 1981, and then transferred to the high school library,” said Isabelle.

In 1982, she completed a Masters of Arts in psychology from Anna Maria College. While working in the library, Isabelle counseled Shrewsbury students.

When MC died in 1991, at the age of 82, Chang decided that it was time for her to retire.

“I had a lot to take care of then,” she said.

Retire is not exactly what she’s done. A longtime writer of Chinese cookbooks and tales, she has continued her passion. She wrote “Spag: The American Dream” in 1992, “The Birth of the Pill” in 2014, and a book about Artemas Ward, a general in the Revolutionary War. She was also elected a Shrewsbury town representative.

Chang now spends several days a week at the Shrewsbury Senior Center, where she participates in a writing group, book club, and other events.

Looking back, she said, “MC should have won the Nobel Prize for his work on the pill. People should remember him, and they don’t. Maybe they will when they read this article.”
