We can all do our part… If the current health crisis has taught us nothing else, it has shown that our big world can get much smaller virtually overnight. Suddenly we are more aware of what is happening right in our own backyards.

Please join us in this mission because together… we can make a difference.

The world around us is changing, but our commitment to community does not need to diminish. Local businesses are facing unprecedented challenges right now but we can all do our part to support them. Consider buying a gift certificate to a local business, grabbing dinner from a restaurant in your community or purchasing an item from a merchant in your neighborhood instead of online. The “Buy • Believe • Local” program is an initiative spearheaded by the Community Advocate to reinforce this message. Over the next several months we will be partnering with like-minded businesses and organizations to keep the focus on the local business community. To do so, we have committed $30,000 in promotional space to help spread the word.

Dear Family, Friends & Clients...

Warm Wishes from our family to yours!

“Karen was very knowledgeable and professional. She had excellent local contacts when I needed recommendations. Karen was patient and calm when I wasn’t so much so. She talked me through computer applications that were new since the last time I sold a house. Karen was very supportive through the whole process of selling my home. I enjoyed working with Karen and recommend her to anyone local who is selling their property.” ❧❧❧

“I chose Karen to sell my home as she is the queen of Northborough. The house was listed and offer accepted in 2 days. Closing process went smoothly and Karen was able to assist in a pinch with certain matters. Karen is knowledgeable, professional, and is good at what she does.”

s we approach the holiday season, I feel extremely blessed when reflecting on the past. Twenty-seven years ago, I began my career as a real estate agent. I never could have imagined the amazing journey that was ahead. I have met incredible individuals along the way, many of whom I feel honored to now call friends. This adventure has seen the growth of my four children, the marriage of four children, and the birth of my two grandchildren, with a third and fourth grandchild on the way. Throughout the years there have been several discussions about the key to success. Though there are many different opinions, I truly believe that the real key to my success is all of you; my clients, friends and family. I want to take this opportunity to express my heartfelt gratitude to each and every one of you. I am deeply touched by the kind words, referrals, loyalty, and constant support that I have been shown over the years and want you to know that I sincerely appreciate everything you have done. I look forward to the opportunity to assist you with any of your real estate needs in the years to come. Best wishes for a happy & healthy holiday season and a wonderful year filled with laughter, love, and happiness.

Judy Boyle, REALTOR® A

s I reflect back on my 18 years in Real Estate, I can’t help but feel gratified and proud for doing so much more than just helping over 300 buyers and sellers close on their homes. I think of the busy medical doctor battling breast cancer...all the days I went over to her townhouse before showings to bring fresh flowers, make the bed and tidy up. I was by her side throughout her successful battle and am grateful that we are still good friends today. I think of the recently widowed senior citizen…all the days we spent together sorting through 50 years of memorabilia, meeting with financial advisors and attorneys in between shopping for a more manageable home. A compassionate ear and a

neutral confidante were what this client needed. Years later, I still look forward to our afternoon tea. Then there are the more complex situations when the marital home needs to be sold as part of the divorce settlement. I recall working alongside a hoarder as she tearfully filled donation bins…and the laughs that ensued as she admitted feeling a burden had been lifted. And then there was the dad who often needed me to pick up the kids at school and one day meet him at the ball field to sign an offer. He still periodically sends me chocolates to thank me for remaining neutral and level-headed during a tumultuous time. There will always be a special place in my heart for all my “kids” making their first home purchase. I

Proudly serving the Borough’s and Beyond with honesty and integrity since 2003

find nothing more gratifying than guiding them towards making the best financial investment possible. I cherish following their stories as they get married, bring children into their homes and then help them again when it is time for something bigger. As a Real Estate agent, I have the unique opportunity to bring so much more to the transaction than just a sold sign. Sometimes I need to be the professional organizer and cheerleader. Sometimes I need to be the marriage counselor, the psychiatrist, the babysitter, or the chauffeur. Whatever I need to be,I am committed to putting your

needs before my own. To me, Real Estate is not about the transaction; it is about the relationship. If you need someone to make the process a little bit easier…no matter what the situation…I have been through it all and would be honored to help.

Q&A with Ryan Maloney of Julio’s Liquors Julio’s Liquors is a very unique store. What is your vision for it? Since purchasing the business, I’ve had a vision to create something that is so much more than a retail store. I view the store as a venue to provide education, build relationships and create a culture around the products we carry. People don’t realize that we are one of the leading liquor retailers in the nation and much of that is due to the way we connect with our customers and vendors. The pandemic has been challenging for many businesses, have you been able to adjust? Honestly, we were able to pivot almost immediately and customers were grateful for our response. We were able to accommodate patrons regardless of their comfort level with the health crisis… for those who wanted touch-free options, we offered curbside pick-up and even home delivery. For those who were comfortable shopping in-store, we enacted customer friendly ways to adhere to all CDC and state recommendations. What products do you think are going to really grow in popularity?

Ryan Maloney, Owner of Julio’s Liquors, Westborough

The growth in specialty whiskies and craft brews has been nothing short of spectacular. We are the largest sellers of both types of products in the area. Now, we are looking at “Craft Spirits” as the potential booming market. No matter what products come along, it is our goal to be the educational source that allows our customers to be more knowledgeable about the products they buy. How do you account for the popularity of specialized whiskies? It has something to do with a maturing of tastes. As people mature they start to look for products that have a history and a culture behind them. Whiskey culture is a fascinating world and I have gone to great lengths to become an expert in the field. People with an interest in whiskey would be interested to know that I have been inducted into the Keeper of the Quaich Society in Scotland, one of whisky’s highest honors. I also started a group for aficionados known as the Loch and Key Society. Those interested should visit our website at www.lochandkey.com. Julio’s is known for its educational events…has that been put on hold? Absolutely not. We have created a series of hybrid events that allow people to participate either in person, (with limited attendance) or remotely…whatever works best for their personal comfort level. To be informed of our events, customers can sign up for our newsletter at www.juliosliquors.com or download our Julios Liquors app. Julio’s is really known as a regional destination ...how did you become a leader?

Specialty foods, accessories and an extensive wine selection, including a tasting room.

I never stop marketing the store and exposing it to new markets. In 2018 I was recognized by the industry magazine, Market Watch as the “Marketer of the Year” and in 2019 we were named a Whisky icon store by Whisky Magazine as the best single location Whisky Store in the country. But beyond that, I am passionate about the culture we have created and I plan to keep building on it...it’s not unusual for us to get a large number of people visiting us weekly from adjoining states or even hundreds of miles away. I always want people to realize what a true “destination store” they have right in their own back yard.

You can trace their early days to Chelmsford, where the first Mr. Handyman location was opened in 1996. Now, Mr. Handyman is equipped with both local and national backing as they join Neighborly’s family of brands.

Although not new to the home repair industry, Mr. Handyman has recognized and taken necessary measures to adjust to this year’s “new normal”. Michael Campbell and his team follow COVID-19 closely as the situation develops and have adapted their business model to fit the recommendations of the CDC. Mr. Handyman has professional, licensed carpenters, all of whom are thoroughly background checked, bonded, and insured. They show up in company uniforms, carry photo IDs, and wear the proper PPE and practice healthy habits to protect you and those you love. Every van is stocked with B-Clean, a hospital grade sanitizer, so that they may properly clean their tools and work areas as they work. People often expect a handyman to do only small jobs, but Mr. Handyman can do so much more. They can handle most remodeling and all types of repairs and installations, including tile, gutter work, wood rot, siding, power washing, windows and doors, painting, drywall and water damage. If a licensed plumber or electrician is needed for your job, Mr. Handyman will refer and work with their reputable partners. In New England, colorful leaves mean that the cool weather is breezing in…and the snow is not too far behind! Let Mr. Handyman look at your gutters in preparation of the season! Need gutter guard to prevent those nasty clogs? They can install that too. There is still time to fix those creaky deck boards, address that peeling paint, and replace your damaged siding. Not ready to get the job done? That’s okay, too. They love to plan and would be happy to get you on the schedule for all those indoor winter remodels to give you and your family that movie room you always wanted. A little preventive maintenance can go a long way. It’s money well spent! first learned of Children’s Orchard years ago when I was introduced to the store by a friend. As a wife and mother of three children, I could appreciate the idea of buying and selling gently used children’s items. Plus, as someone who cares deeply about envi-

ronmental protection, I really liked the idea of recycling these perfectly good items so they stay out of the landfill and let others enjoy them. I worked as an employee in the store for 15 years, learning the business and what it took to be successful. I purchased the business five years ago with my husband Paul. This October will be our fourth year in our expanded location. At Children’s Orchard, we buy and sell current gently-used children’s apparel, shoes, toys, and baby equipment. No need to wait for your items to sell because we are resale, not consignment. We pay cash the same day or you may choose store credit to earn even more. Since kids outgrow their clothing so fast, we help parents keep their kids in quality clothing without spending a fortune on it.

Helping Your Business Starts with Knowing You. NOTHING BUNDT CAKES Al Gulachenski’s vision of opening a bakery became a reality by partnering with Cornerstone Bank. “They took the time to listen to my idea and understand my business; they got it—and they went out of their way to make the SBA loan process easy.” And that paved the way for his grand opening in December 2019. Its mission was to serve as a cooperative financial institution allowing members to pool their savings, lend to one another, and own the organization where they obtain financial services. Your deposits are protected by the National Credit Administration Association (NCUA), a government regulatory and monitoring agency similar to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) that banks use. Over the years, the credit union expanded its service area to Shrewsbury and all contiguous towns. Services: Membership is open to those who live, work, worship or attend school in Shrewsbury or one of the bordering towns. Members can take advantage of traditional savings, checking and credit card services, direct deposit, automatic payments, and an array of personal lending choices – all with lower fees than most banks charge. SCFU also has no minimum balance requirements or maintenance fees. By joining a credit union, members become shareholders. Unlike for-profit banks, credit unions allow members to keep more money in their pockets through the advantages of higher savings and lower loan rates. We are currently offering highly competitive rates on mortgages, auto loans, personal loans, as well as home equity options. SFCU also offers commercial services, specializing in creative financing for small and large businesses. Current offerings include commercial real estate and equipment loans, business lines of credit and credit cards, as well as deposit products. Commitment to community: SFCU has a strong sense of community – it continues to donate to a wide variety of organizations such as the public schools, library, police and fire departments, the arts and health/human service organizations. SFCU became a partner in the Shrewsbury Public Schools Colonial Connections program. It will provide opportunities for students to develop real-world skills and independence in order to prepare them for future success beyond their education. Increasing access to experiential learning and career awareness will help students decide on their paths for higher education and careers and will include, among others, enhanced learning in the STEAM fields (science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics). Funds will be used over the coming years to fund special events, transportation, communications, associated equipment and supplies. In keeping with its dedication in supporting the communities it serves, the credit union also offers residents and groups complimentary use of its spacious community room for gatherings and meeting. We invite you to call, click or visit us soon. A better way to bank may not be a bank at all!

Law office specializing in estate planning for all ages, elder law, and probate

I

n considering estate planning, the documents that everyone needs at a minimum are a Will, a Power of Attorney, and a Health Care Proxy. Most people don’t know that a Power of Attorney names someone to manage your finances if you cannot do so and that it ends when you die. It is a very powerful document. If a person has minor children, then they will also need some type of Trust to go along with the Will since minors cannot be in control of their own money. Why I chose these areas of law to specialize in: Initially, I chose estate planning since I liked the area of law, the hours were flexible, and I could see clients in the evening after my children had gone to bed. I continued to specialize in this area after my children had grown not only because I liked it, but also because I saw a need.

Attorney Carolyn Spring specializes in the areas of Estate Planning for over 30 years and Elder Law for over 20 years. Background: Cornell University 1980, Boston College Law School 1983, Certified Financial Planner degree 1993

LAW OFFICE OF

Carolyn R. Spring

When my mother was widowed in her early 60s she knew nothing about finances, estate planning and the like. Several attorneys told her what to do and they all said different things. She was overwhelmed. I believe that I am the type of attorney who will take the time to explain things to my clients so they understand their estate plan and also understand what their estate planning documents say before they sign them. I approach each client with compassion as well. Many people are afraid to do a Will, thinking that it is a self-fulfilling prophecy. Those clients need extra patience, understanding and time.

Teaching: I teach a course at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School in Marlborough, “Estate, Financial and Retirement Planning for Women”. Too often women are not knowledgeable in these topic areas and I want to educate them so they can comfortably participate in their own decisions.

Media: In recent years I did a show for Westborough TV called “Law For Your Life,” which covered a variety of topics including estate planning and a series, “Moving Mom,” in which I detailed the process of moving my mom from out-of-state into a local assisted living residence. These shows can be accessed online at www.westboroughtv.org. Community outreach: I offer free legal clinics at the Westborough Senior Center and Grafton Senior Center. I also offer a free half hour consultation to new clients and a discount to the senior members of our community. I see these all as my way of giving back to the community.

Spotlight Kitchen, Bath & Lighting Design Center The Spotlight Kitchen, Bath & Lighting Design Center’s team: (l to r) Leanne Richard, Justin Havalotti, Alban Gega, Ted Lochner, Morgan Vance and Ilmi Licaj,in the company’s showroom

Worcester – Immediately upon entering either of the dazzling showrooms of Spotlight Kitchen, Bath & Lighting Design Center, conveniently located at 86 Shrewsbury St. in Worcester, one realizes that this isn’t your average design center. It isn’t just the gleaming surfaces, the sleek cabinetry and sophisticated hardware; it’s also the warm welcome one receives from owner Alban Gega and members of his team. “I want people to come and see our beautiful showrooms for themselves, to see the high quality of what we offer and get a different experience than in others,” he said. What he offers are meticulous designs unique to each of his clients’ needs and wishes using the most up-to-date styles and trends with state-of-the-art technology. He prides himself on delivering incredible service. Morgan Vance, Spotlight Kitchen & Bath’s office manager, said that Gega stands out because he is exceptionally personable with his clients. His team includes Leanne Richard, design lead and architect, and who is a recipient of the 30 Under 30 Award by the National Kitchen and Bath Association in 2015, as well as certified kitchen designer Ted Lochner, and senior designer Justin Havalotti, who have been in the industry for decades. With years of design experience with other firms, Gega set out on his own about six years ago and has built this business on a foundation of trust. “We have a different motto. We work with clients and we also work with a lot of contractors so if a client needs a contractor we can refer them to the ones that we work with regularly and trust,” he stated. “I built my company by creating loyal, lasting relationships with other local businesses. We want to be able to continuously feed them, and in turn, they feed us.” Their process starts with a FREE consultation and

in-home measurements before beginning the design stage. “We create the design and we show renderings on our 70-inch big screens and you can see the design in 3-D, including a breakdown of the floor plan, elevations, and other details,” he explained. “We don’t charge for any of our measures or design consultations. We take pride in our showroom, products and skills and it is up to our customer to take it to the next level. There is nothing for them to lose.” Spotlight Kitchen & Bath will coordinate all aspects of a project from design to delivery including countertops, backsplash, hardware, flooring and an extensive array of lighting options. They have it all! Gega said that they can create a beautiful kitchen or bathroom on any budget and often beat the local home box store in quality and price. They have also done closets, basements and home entertainment zones. “We have handpicked our lines of cabinets that have a little bit of edge on their competitors with better price,” he added. “Many of the manufacturers build their product in-house from scratch.” When asked about design trends, Gega replied, “New England will always be New England. White kitchens are here to stay and will never go out of style…I am seeing different finishes coming like two-tone kitchens such as a white and off white or grey pairing and the island may be a different color.” He pointed out that he isn’t seeing the use of cherry as much at the moment but walnut, hickory and alder

have become popular. Spotlight Kitchen & Bath is a proud member of the National Kitchen and Bath Association, and has been recognized for the past six years with the “Best of Houzz” Award. They also enjoy an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. Gega looks forward to helping you fulfill your remodeling dreams. For more information, visit: https://www.spotlightkitchens.com. Realtors Gary Kelley and Sue Gordon have personality That’s important in the time of COVID-19 “Cause you got personality Walk, with personality Talk, with personality

Smile, with personality

Charm, with personality…” ~ “Personality,” Lloyd Price

SOUTHBOROUGH - Gary Kelley gets a kick out of telling people that he co-hosts a radio show on the third Sunday of every month. “It’s at 8:30 a.m. on 830 on the AM dial. Who says dial anymore?” Listening to “All Things Real Estate,” it’s clear Kelley and his cohost, Brad Avergon, Senior Loan Office, Envision Bank and Mortgage, tell it like it is. Recently, Avergon said to Kelley, “There’s a mindset sometimes that all we do is just a transaction. One of the things that makes you and Sue (Gordon) special and distinguishes you from some of your competition is your personality and your accountability to be there for your clients and do whatever you have to do to get things done.” This is especially true in the time of COVID-19. “This the first time I’ve been grounded since the summer of 1975. But with masks and social distancing, we figured out a way to get the job done for our clients who were in need,” said Kelley.

What’s different now? “The real estate market has been rather odd. There was a sense it was going stop in March, and it’s accelerated thanks to ludicrously low mortgage rates,” Kelley said. “People seem to be more willing to put their properties on the market, which is good. There’s low inventory, and over the summer, we have been busy like it’s a spring market. We’ve seen multiple offers on homes, and every transaction has its own challenges.” He added, “We’re seeing a shift in demand for separate workspaces with people telecommuting. There is a sense this is here to stay.”

Stressful time calls for stressless help Kelley and Gordon are especially capable on taking on some of their customer’s stress. Clearing out and prepping a home for sale has always been a hurdle, and these days it’s a mountain. Together, Kelley and Gordon have a deep Rolodex of contacts. Need help cleaning

out a basement? They have the person to do it, and sometimes they do it themselves. Need a contractor? They’ve already done the vetting and will connect you with a cost-effective quality crew. A recent customer said, “I would not be where I am on my house today without Gary and Sue. I was overwhelmed with the idea of cleaning out 30 years of stuff and getting my house ready to sell. They told me to have an inspection before I listed my house, and that has been a gamechanger. Everything on the inspector’s list has been checked off one by one, thanks to their help.” During COVID-19, Kelley commented that the need for physical presence has complicated some work. For example, he said, “We had a client who needed to replace their septic system. We had the engineering work done but the Board of Health wasn’t meeting. That kind of thing can push out a closing.”

Nameless call centers Another big roadblock can be

financing, and Kelley and Gordon can help in that arena too. With low rates and a huge demand for refinancing, mortgage companies are struggling to meet demand. Kelley’s relationship with Avergon (and others) has helped many clients avoid nameless call centers and close their deals. “While it’s prudent to expect things to take longer, we are getting things done. We can even do a drive-by appraisal on a purchase transaction now,” said Avergon.

Thinking about trading up or downsizing Kelley and Gordon would be happy to meet you, share some laughs, make a deal, and get the job done. Challenging stressful times call for stressless help.
