Westborough residents can throw axes at soon-to-open spot

A new spot coming to Westborough is looking forward to helping you do that. iSMASH is planning to open at 276 Turnpike Road, the plaza that includes Coffee & Pi, Domino’s Pizza, and Westborough

‘Not your grandfather’s pest service’

Family-owned Ransford Pest Control celebrates 130 years in business

By Micky Baca Contributing Writer SHREWSBURY – It’s carpenter ant and wasp season in Central Massachusetts. Ticks, termites, and mosquitoes are also coming on strong. Family-run Ransford Pest Control doesn’t want you to panic or stress out.

After 130 years in business, Ransford has got this.

Owner Maria Richmond says her company expressly avoids the fear-mongering tactics that some competitors use to attract customers: “The bugs are scary enough. We don’t need to terrify people,” she said.

When clients call, the Shrewsbury-based company is able to provide same-day service 97 percent of the time.

Ransford’s staff is trained to be patient, reassuring clients and ensuring the job is done properly.

“Sometimes you are seeing people on one of their worst days,” Maria said. “We encounter happy people, hysterical people, and everything in between.”

Maria runs the 25-employee company along with her husband Eric, son Connor, daughter Caitlyn, and son-in-law George. She said the company’s mission is to provide pest control that protects people and their homes.

Though it’s one of the oldest pest control companies in the country, Ransford uses some of the newest technology and processes to provide protection against ants, wasps, rodents, roaches, bedbugs, termites, and more. Its technicians are trained and licensed in the latest industry practices. With a fleet of 20 trucks, Ransford has technicians spread around the area who can be at most locations quickly.

While using the latest technology is important, Maria said that Ransford’s relationship with customers sets it apart.

“We are truly a locally owned, family small business,” Maria said. “When you do business with us, we’re your neighbor, we share the same parks and public spaces, we pay taxes.

You know who you’re dealing with. We stand behind things.”

Aside from responding to calls, Ransford deals with pests proactively, conducting thorough inspections, sealing

places where pests can get in, and recommending pestfighting steps. Tactics can include proper storage practices, yard maintenance, and even the strategic use of plantings.

Ransford offers a maintenance plan where technicians go to homes every quarter to inspect and provide preventative treatment.

The company’s roots date back to 1896, when a chef in Worcester became known for controlling pests in restaurants and ended up starting his own service. Maria’s parents worked for the chef’s family and wound up acquiring the company.

Maria took over the business from her father in 2012, making it one of the few womanowned pest control companies in a predominantly male-run industry.

Ransford keeps up with the latest innovations in pest control via trade shows, peer groups, and industry networks.

The company seeks to use eco-

logical materials to get the job done. For example, Ransford is among the 2 percent of companies nationwide certified to use a bait product for termites that eliminates extensive chemicals.

For rodent control, the company uses as many non-chemical tactics as possible in an effort to minimize rodenticide use.

“We really practice integrated pest management,” Maria said. “It’s all science and it works. We look at everything.”

After working there off-and-on in high school and college, Connor recently returned to Ransford full-time following a decade of working in corporate marketing. He wanted a more creative role where he could make a real difference, he said, and at Ransford, he “gets to see [his] mom every day.”

Proposed 130-foot cell tower dividing Northborough

By Laney Halsey Reporter NORTHBOROUGH – The Northborough Planning Board on June 25 opted to continue a long-running public hearing regarding the proposed installation of a 130-foot cell tower at 409 Green Street, near Tougas Family Farm.

After a series of disagreements, board members decided to seek guidance from town counsel before making a final vote.

TowerCo and Verizon submitted the application, seeking approval to construct a nine-antenna monopole within a 70-by-70 foot enclosure. While many residents have argued the pole would be unsightly, Verizon claims there’s a “substantial gap” in cell coverage.

Verizon’s legal representative, attorney Michael Fenton, argued that the tower is necessary to provide adequate coverage. He also said that some neighbors have supported the project, including the mother

of an autistic child who lives on Green Street who was “very concerned” about the safety implications of not having reliable cellular coverage.

When coming to a decision, the Planning Board must focus on Verizon’s coverage – not the capabilities of other providers. Furthermore, federal law doesn’t recognize local boundaries, meaning that the Planning Board must disregard town lines in its decision.

Many residents were concerned that the tower was being put in their town for the benefit of neighboring communities like Boylston.

A petition, signed by 262 people – 141 of whom were from Northborough – urged the board to deny the height waiver, which would permit the 130-foot pole to surpass the 75-foot height maximum.

The petition argued that the tower would “starkly contrast” with the scenic roadways and recreation areas. “It is crucial that we uphold the integrity of our zoning laws,” the petition stated, calling

the tower an “unnecessary expansion.”

A 75-foot pole – which meets current zoning – would likely fill the coverage gap within Northborough, said Michael Lawton, a consultant who spoke on behalf of Northborough. Many residents saw the 130-foot pole as a move that put profit over people.

The extra height could allow for more “co-locators” (tenants), thus making the tower more money, some residents speculated.

Adam Warsofsky, who lives on Green Street, stated that he feels the tower is for the benefit of Boylston over Northborough. “If a 75-foot tower isn’t good enough for Verizon, then why is 130-feet good enough?

That’s because it’s all about the financial gain,” he said.

A significant portion of the meeting was dedicated to how the tower might benefit Northborough’s emergency services. Mark Cady, a radio frequency consultant, expressed that the tower would be “a critical component to

the town’s public safety plan for the future.” A month ago, the Northborough Police Department sounded the alarm about its poor radio infrastructure, including spotty communication abilities with dispatch that sometimes endangers officers.

Verizon had offered the town free space on the tower for municipal antennas – and the Planning Board emphasized that it cares about public safety – but there were unanswered questions about how the new set-up would function.

“If this tower is approved, it would be great to have it as an opportunity for that eventual design, but we can’t quantify what it will bring or what it won’t bring for public safety at this point,” Lawton told the Planning Board.

The board remains undecided, recognizing the complex criteria surrounding the decision.

“I definitely don’t want to get it wrong,” Planning Board Chair Amy Poretsky said.

Grafton’s Fourth of July Parade has gone from idea to institution

By Evan Walsh Managing Editor GRAFTON – As they made their way down North Street, parade-goers were in for a welcome surprise named Scott Rossiter. The longtime Grafton resident was posted at the end of Stonewall Drive, right next to all the action.

Rossiter was armed with a 5-gallon Home Depot bucket filled with water, a foam water blaster, and impeccable aim.

From the sidewalk, he sprayed those participating in the parade — avoiding, of course, those situated in an automobile or who just preferred to stay dry.

“People looked like they needed a drink of water,” said Rossiter.

The cool-off was welcome, as paradegoers made the 0.8mile trek from North Street Elementary School to the Common in the 90-degree heat.

Though it was toasty outside, Grafton’s Fourth of July Parade was more popular than ever, with more than 40 vehicles participating in the event’s fifth year.

The parade started as something much smaller: Organizer Justin Stone and others wanted to give children an opportunity to decorate their bikes. That didn’t happen — at least not right away — but several community members were interested in doing floats.

The rest is history. When thunderstorms were anticipated two years ago, most other outdoor events were canceled.

Added Rossiter: “I thought originally it wasn’t going to stick, but it’s nice to see that it’s grown. The idea of adding the Farmers Market at the end of the parade is brilliant. I think it’s becoming an excellent tradition. ... Our Common is like sacred ground. Walt Disney couldn’t re-create something that looks like that.”

And though it’s grown considerably, the parade remains the event anyway, putting Grafton’s celebration on the map state-wide.

“It was a small-town parade,” said Stone. “It really took off.”

A half-decade of the Fourth of July Parade later, it’s an institution. A Farmers Market is at the end of the parade, complete with food trucks, local vendors, and music. The town elected its “dog mayor” as part of the festivities.

“Now, it’s become not just a parade, but about getting Grafton residents — but also people from throughout Massachusetts — together. It speaks to Grafton, how close everybody is, and how support-

free to participate in, run entirely by volunteers, and deeply rooted in the community. During the chaos and excitement of the parade, Stone took a second to look at the smiles around him.

“You have to make sure you stop and take it in. I’m always thinking about the next one, but you have to take a moment to see how big it’s grown. It’s become a fixture of the town. It’s not my parade, it’s the town of Grafton’s parade,” he said.

“It’s not for me, it’s for everybody who wants to come out and celebrate.”

HUDSON – In February, the Hudson Downtown Business Improvement District introduced its inaugural Hudson Restaurant Week, seven days of celebrating – and supporting – local eateries that contribute to the town’s vibrant and awardwinning downtown.

It was a huge success for local business, with restaurants reporting increased foot traffic and greater enthusiasm for local dining, and for patrons, who leveraged deals and explored what Hudson had to offer. It was so successful that the Hudson Downtown Business Improvement District is bringing it back from July 12 to July 18.

“We have a lot of restaurants – and all of them are invested in making sure everyone’s experience is top-notch,” said Richard Braga, the administrator for the Hudson Downtown Business Improvement District. “We have a lot of creative menus and people putting a lot of energy and effort into what they offer.”

During Restaurant Week, participating restaurants, cafés, bakeries, breweries, and specialty food businesses throughout Downtown Hudson will offer special menus, featured items, chef-inspired creations, and limited-time summer offerings.

By Evan Walsh Managing Editor SHREWSBURY – Shrewsbury has never seen this type of interest before.

The future of the now-defunct Empire Dry Cleaning lot at 15 Maple Avenue is drawing record interest, with over 1,015 responses to a townsponsored survey meant to gauge what residents would like to see happen to the centrally-located property.

Founded in 1972, the cleaner closed in the 2010s. The property owed over $300,000 in taxes and fees, leading the town to foreclose on the property. The case sat in Land Court for several years, but the foreclosure was finalized on November 6, 2025.

The building was ap praised at $280,000. It’s now town-owned property.

Empire Dry Cleaning is a brownfield site, contaminated with Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) from operational use, accidental fuel releases, and spills. The plot has been through the MassDEP process, and there is “minimal risk” going forward, Town Manager Kevin Mizikar said in 2025.

So, what did the survey have to say?

Approximately 32 percent of respondents favored turning the site into recreation space. There was a desire for a spot for middle-school students – who often walk from Sherwood and Oak to the center of town – to congregate, with games, courts, and a playground. Suggestions also included creating a green space, community garden, park, or gathering spot with benches, picnic tables, and landscaping.

90-year-old tai chi instructor continues to inspire Shrewsbury students

By Evan Walsh Managing Editor SHREWSBURY – A dozen Shrewsbury residents needed to distract Bill Riordan.

Laurie Demers knew just what to do.

“A s k h i m a q u e s t i o n about tai chi,” she told the room. “If you ask him a question about your stick, once he gets going, he’ll be so into it, he won’t be looking around or noticing anything around him.”

For the next half-hour, Riordan was engrossed in tai chi, teaching the Chinese martial art to those around him. He didn’t notice the birthday cake entering the room, or the various gifts, or the giant balloons hanging overhead.

“He had no clue. He was in his tai chi zone,” said Demers.

When class was over, Riordan finally realized it was all for him. After 33 years of teaching tai chi – including instructing a Shrews-

bury class at the Senior Center – Riordan celebrated his 90th birt hday alongside his students.

“This was overwhelming. It was 1,000 percent a surprise,” said Riordan.

Four decades a g o , Riordan and his wife were looking for an activity that would help them get active and outside of the house.

His wife suggested tai chi, but for whatever reason – Riordan doesn’t quite remember – he wasn’t in love with the idea. A year later, he finally came around to

the activity.

The rest was history.

He learned tai chi for 10 years before becoming an instructor. An electrical engineer, Riordan would teach tai chi to colleagues at lunchtime. And yet despite practicing relentlessly, there was always more to learn.

“It’s a challenge. You never fully learn it. You learn a little bit, you learn a little knowledge, but there’s so much out there. After 30 years, I thought I only knew 10 percent of it. A couple years later, I think I know 1 or 2 percent more,” he said.

Tai chi is often described

as “meditation in motion,” and participants do a series of “forms” that were originally created for selfdefense. For Riordan, it’s about exercise, and at 90, he’s moving around as well as anyone.

How long will he keep going?

“Probably until I can’t get out of bed,” he said.

And in teaching tai chi, he’s found a community.

A community that cares about the martial art, but also about its instructor.

Riordan had chocolate cake and unwrapped a series of gifts – including plenty of $90 gift cards.

“One of the things we wanted 30 years ago was to meet new people. If you look around, there are no misfits.

People who want to do tai chi already have their heads screwed on right. You meet some really, really good people,” he said.

“Bill cares so much about helping people learn it. He’s amazing,” said Demers.

New ambulance provider serving Marlborough MARLBOROUGH – Mayor J. Christian Dumais announced that Coastal Medical Transportation Systems (Coastal) has become Marlborough’s new provider of emergency ambulance services.

Coastal was founded in 2013 and has grown into one of the largest ambulance service providers in Massachusetts, delivering emergency and non-emergency medical transportation, mobile healthcare services, and specialty event coverage throughout Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. The company has earned a strong reputation for clinical excellence, reliability, innovation, and patient-centered care, Dumais said.

‘It takes very little effort to change someone’s life’ Shrewsbury’s Shannon Wall selected as Commonwealth Heroine

By Evan Walsh Managing Editor SHREWSBURY – Decades ago, Shannon Wall was working at the Ground Round when she came across a young woman studying for her citizenship exam. Using her degree in history, Wall decided to help her prepare. It was a small act of kindness that Wall promptly forgot about.

Until about five years ago, when Wall was dining at Jimmy’s. Out of nowhere, the woman came running toward her, crying and thanking her for her help all those years ago.

For Wall, it was five minutes of kindness. For this woman, it was everything: “You changed my life,” she said.

“There are always little ways you can contribute,” Wall told the Community Advocate.

It’s that philosophy that motivates everything Wall does.

A proud Shrewsbury resident,

she wears many hats and is involved in several different organizations that seek to make a difference – no matter how small – in people’s lives. In May, Wall was honored as a 2026 Commonwealth Heroine, an award bestowed upon women who positively impact their communities.

The honor is presented by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women.

State Representative Hannah Kane nominated Wall, saying she “uses her time, talent, spirit, and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of others in the community.”

“I think a lot of people feel pressed for time, but there are lots of ways to get involved and contribute,” Wall told the Community Advocate. “You can find ways to support things, and every little bit matters. If we have a lot of people helping and each person does a little, we can get a lot done. Those

little things you might think are irrelevant or unimportant, they might actually be big. It takes very little effort to change someone’s life.”

Wa l l g ra d u a te d f ro m Shrewsbury High School in 1995 and almost immediately got involved around the community, becoming a Town Meeting member. For the last year, she’s served as the president of the Shrewsbury Rotary Club, volunteering around town and helping residents.

She’s also involved with the Shrewsbury Democratic Town Committee, serves as a trustee for the New England Botanic Garden at Tower Hill, and is also a trustee for the Treehouse Foundation, an organization that “builds award-winning, replicable communities that support foster and adoptive families.” She served on the Spring Street School Parent Teacher Organization.

roles focus on different topics.

But all of them are meant to give back.

“Once you get started, it’s easy to find your way, find your space, and find where you can make a difference,” said Wall. “I grew up in a very service-driven family. We’re very blessed, we live in a beautiful community, and now we use our skills to make other peoples’ lives the best they can be.”

Visibility isn’t why Wall does the work, and she was “absolutely stunned” to become a Commonwealth Heroine,

she said. But she’s hoping the recognition inspires others – including her daughters Kathryn, 11, and Ella, 8 – to get involved in the world around them.

Just a little help can go a long way.

“For me, it’s the cause. Some work is more visible than others, but it’s not about the visibility. My goal and hope is that it inspires others to get involved. It’s less about what I’m doing, and more about how volunteering a little bit can create such meaningful change for others,” she said.

‘Fabric of the community’

Westborough’s Karen Henderson honored with prestigious Commonwealth Heroine Award

By Evan Walsh Managing Editor WESTBOROUGH – Bringing local television coverage to Westborough requires immense sacrifice. For Karen Henderson, the general manager at Westborough TV, it often takes the form of early mornings, busy afternoons, and late nights.

She is away from family for evening meetings, darts around Westborough from event to event, and covers athletics in a variety of inclement weather. During the job’s toughest moments – when it’s 10 p.m. and a 4-hour meeting seems nowhere close to wrapping – Henderson finds meaning in her work.

After all, her role is indispensable. She’s practically part of the fabric of the community.

“I feel like we just hold up a mirror to all the good things happening in Westborough.

It’s all about sharing good and informative stories,” Hender-

son told the Community Advocate. “We’re making a video scrapbook of Westborough.”

Though her role is mostly behind the scenes, Henderson was recently honored in a major way. Nominated by Representative Kate Donaghue and Representative Hannah Kane, Henderson was named a 2026 Commonwealth Heroine. The award, presented by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women, is given to individuals who “make a difference” and “use their time, talent, spirit, and enthusiasm to enrich the lives of others in their communities.”

Raised in Connecticut by parents who gave a lot back to their community, Henderson has been deeply involved in Westborough since she moved to town. She served for seven years on the School Committee and eventually found herself on the town’s Cable Television Advisory Committee.

Around that time, Donna Kelly was stepping down as

the leader of Westborough TV. Though she had no cable background, Henderson loved being involved in Westborough and knew many of the town’s stakeholders through her volunteerism.

“I thought, ‘Huh, maybe I’m interested in that job.’

I didn’t have a video background, but I knew a lot of people in town, I’d worked with a lot of boards, and I had communication skills. I threw my hat in the ring, and, for some reason, they hired me,” said Henderson.

Led by Henderson and her talented staff of Aidan Horrigan and Tim Schwab, Westborough TV covers hundreds of government meetings per year, giving residents unparalleled access to proceedings.

Old meetings are archived and can be accessed, allowing people to watch conversations that shaped the town.

“It helps our governm e n t o p e r a t e b e t t e r ,” Henderson said.

But Westborough TV has

perhaps its biggest impact outside of Town Hall. Henderson covers pre-school events, middle-school productions, and Westborough High happenings. Parents in Westborough can practically watch their child’s upbringing, all thanks to Henderson’s efforts.

A variety of ribbon-cuttings, concerts, and ceremonies are also part of the organization’s wide-ranging coverage.

“Some of the things we do matter a lot to a lot of people.

Some of the things we do matter a little bit to a lot of people.

And some things we do matter a lot to just a few people. To me, all of those are important. For me, it’s covering something that’s important to someone – and that matters to me,” Henderson said.

Henderson, who wanted to be a teacher and had a certification in secondary education, also runs the TV journalism program, working with

Westborough High School students to produce newscasts and podcasts.

Whether she’s covering school events, Senior Center activities, or more, Henderson is there for the community. And ultimately, every piece of footage is an effort to bring Westborough closer together.

“So much for me is building and engaging the community,” she said. “I love that piece of it. It’s that fabric of the community. We’re covering so many different things that happen, touching and impacting every part of town. I love that soup-to-nuts aspect.”

Her advice to others?

“I am a huge believer in getting involved. Nobody has ever volunteered for something and wished they didn’t do that – there are so many great organizations in Westborough, and you just get back what you give,” said Henderson.

‘The glue holding the community together’ This Hudson heroine helps those dealing with food insecurity

By Laney Halsey Reporter HUDSON – Dr. Patricia Kelly Luoto is at the heart of many of Hudson’s volunteer initiatives.

For over 20 years, Luoto has served with the Hudson Community Food Pantry, providing expertise from over three decades working in nutrition.

To commend Luoto for her years of dedicated service to the community, State Representative Kate Hogan nominated her for the Commonwealth Heroine Award. The recognition, presented by the Massachusetts Commission on the Status of Women, seeks to honor women for their contributions across Massachusetts, even if they don’t often get the limelight.

“Dr. Pat Luoto is treasured by the Hudson community for her efforts to make Hudson a better place and to make a difference in the lives of her Hudson neighbors,” Hogan wrote to the Community Advocate.

Hogan specifically highlighted Luoto’s work in making the Hudson Community Food Pan-

try, which also serves the towns of Berlin and Bolton, as “efficient and effective as possible.”

Luoto was “humbled” by the recognition, and made a point to recognize the other volunteers who have worked alongside her.

For her, volunteerism is a natural part of her life. The impulse to help others goes back to her upbringing, she said, when she made herself available to help others at church, school, and within her local community.

“I was taught to follow the Golden Rule: ‘Do unto others as others do unto you.’ It’s just kind of what I learned to do growing up,” Luoto said.

After moving to Hudson in the 1970s, Luoto and her husband, George, fell in love with the town and decided that it was where they wanted to stay.

“We raised our family here, we got to know people,” Luoto said. “We enjoyed the fact that it was diverse and especially enjoyed seeing its transformation over the years.”

Part of Hudson’s transformation has included evolving from a traditional “mill town” into a revitalized and growing com-

munity. That shift includes a greater need for food assistance.

Luoto is a professor emeritus at Framingham State University, focusing on food and nutrition.

The former director of the John Stalker Institute, Luoto also worked as a dietitian and has a background in food safety.

“I love food. It’s who I am.

It’s my career,” Luoto said. “I have a real special place in my heart for anybody who has food insecurity.”

Since 2019, food insecurity levels in Massachusetts have jumped from 19 to 40 percent – a statistic that only adds to the importance of Luoto’s work.

As a director with the Hudson Community Food Pantry, she helps coordinate with the Greater Boston Food Bank.

“I hope that I have been able to provide the pantry with an understanding of food insecurity at the state level and how it impacts us at the individual community level,” Luoto said.

She attributes much of the pantry’s success to the volunteers who unload 5,000-pound food shipments, label and place all of the items, ensure

food and safety standards, and much more.

“Their volunteerism is extraordinary,” Luoto said. “ These are people who are there every single Tuesday and Saturday morni n g. I m e a n , they really consider this to be their mission, to provide for the clients that come into the food pantry.”

Luoto previously served as chair of the Hudson Cultural Council. She now serves as secretary of the Hudson Cultural Alliance.

“I think there’s so many benefits that art and culture can provide to a community,” Luoto said. “It gives us the opportunity to gather together as a community in the same place and to experience the music or theater that’s being provided.”

After decades of volunteering, Luoto believes the Commonwealth Heroine Award recognizes something much

greater than an individual achievement.

“The Commission on the Status of Women says that … it’s women who are the glue holding the community together,” Luoto said. “There were 147 recipients of the Commonwealth Heroine Award, but there could have been double or triple that amount.”

For others looking to give back in their own communities, Luoto encourages people to simply take a look around.

“I think you can volunteer with the people that you know,” Luoto said. “Everybody knows somebody who is in need of a meal, telephone call, or a visit.”

‘I’m with some pretty amazing people’ Marlborough’s Barbara Fenby pushes for change, helps others

By Laney Halsey Reporter MARLBOROUGH – Barbara “Babs” Fenby laughs when people call her a “badass.”

But after more than 60 years as a social worker, decades of activism, and a commitment to advocating for people on the margins of society, that description suits her. Her work recently earned her recognition as a Commonwealth Heroine after being nominated by State Representative Danielle Gregoire Fenby graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1962 and has been a social worker ever since. Her early work involved adoptions, emergency family interventions, and dealing with cases of child abuse.

“The thing about social workers is that you have a variety of ways to live out your moral values,” Fenby said. “So

it shifted from time to time, and in the later part of my career I was working with seriously mentally ill folks as state hospitals closed.”

Fenby’s core belief is that every client is an equal.

“Any one of them could have been you or me,” Fenby said.

“And so you have to treat them as real people. At some point in their lives, they were loved or not loved, but it doesn’t matter. At the moment, they are your equals.”

The most rewarding part of her work is seeing people “reclaim their own lives.”

“It’s knowing somebody at their worst … and then a year or two later, running into them at the supermarket, and they’ll say, ‘Hi Barb.’ You say [to yourself] that whatever else in my life I’ve done, there’s one thing [I helped make] right,” she said.

But Fenby’s work doesn’t end there. She enjoys being a “gorilla in the bureaucracy,”

using her position to jockey the system toward social change.

From the streets of D.C. to the West Bank, Fenby has demonstrated that an individual can make an impact. She recounts a protest – one of many demonstrations she’s attended over the years – in the 60s where she was tear-gassed in the nation’s capital.

“One always hopes that the last protest you’re in will be the last protest, but essentially, times change, and you find yourself on the battlelines again,” Fenby said.

In 2022, she took a solo trip to Israel and Jordan and stayed at a peace hospital in the West Bank. There, she witnessed the “inhumanity” of the conflict firsthand. While most people take global reports at face value, Fenby insisted on digging deeper.

“Even if I trust that person, I still have the sense that I have to do my own research,”

Fenby said. “I have to understand for myself, I have to intellectually know about it, and I have to experience it in some way.”

When Fenby learned that she had been nominated for the Commonwealth Heroine Award, she originally wanted to “fly under the radar.”

That changed, though, after gathering with the other heroines.

“Upon reflection and upon meeting the other women who were nominated and reading their history, I said, ‘I’m glad that I’ve been nominated, because I’m with some pretty amazing people.’”

Despite a lifetime spent confronting conflict, Fenby strives for moments of connection when people remember what brings them together. She sees that every year on the Fourth of July.

“I always hope that the joy that we felt on the Fourth of July carries over,” Fenby said.

“I mean, did anybody care what anybody’s politics were?

We were all out there flying the flag and happy to be having a beer with somebody.”

Gregoire wrote in a statement to the Community Advocate: “Everyone I know wants to be like Babs, just a badass lady who continues to throw everything she has at this life and into the lives of the people around her.”

Hudson opens new dog park, ready for canines of all kinds

By Paul Hopkins Reporter HUDSON – July 1 was among the “dog days of summer” in Hudson, as temperatures climbed into the high 90s and a heat advisory took effect. It was sweltering.

But the summertime humidity couldn’t stop the first official users of the Hudson

Dog Park from converging on the new facility at 529 Main Street.

“It’s really cool,” said Roberta Oehley, of Hudson, who brought her 9-year-old golden retriever, Murph, on Opening Day. “I had been to some of the meetings that they’ve had through the years to try and get it going, so it’s really nice to see it’s actually here.”

Oehley said Murph likes to run and play with other dogs, and she expects many to frequent the park. As she spoke, a family arrived with three more canines.

Director of Recreation Steven Santos said there were two major goals: make the park accessible in all areas, and “keep it as natural as possible – so there’s l o t s o f s h a d e .”

Most of the space is shaded by a variety of trees.

The dog park is partially funded through a $250,000 grant from the Stanton Foundation, with additional funds from the town’s Community Preservation Committee. The project could’ve cost around $280,000, but Santos says he expects that $90,000 or more of that will be returned to the CPC.

“We opened on time and under budget,” he said.

T h e re a re l a rge - a n d small-dog areas in the nearly 15,000-square-foot park, with benches in each area. Several picnic tables are designed to be wheelchair accessible, and the designers created a few interesting “obstacles” for dogs to climb on – like large rocks and tree trunks.

You have to go back to 2016 to see the first mention of a dog park project in Hudson. A community outreach effort in 2018 showed lots of interest in an off-leash dog park, and the idea was incorporated in the town’s next Master Plan.

Centech sold for $75 million

Grafton High School to get new turf field

SHREWSBURY — A Shrewsbury industrial site has been sold.

Centech Park North has been sold for $75.1 million, according to the Worcester Registry of Deeds. Parcels include the 19.4acre site at 384 South Street, currently valued at $16.3 million, and the 17-acre site at 721 Hartford Turnpike, valued at approximately $9 million.

The site was transferred from NBPIII Shrewsbury LLC to EIPOT Centech Logistics LLC, according to the registry. NBPIII was based in Wakefield, while EIPOT’s principal office is located in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania.

Formerly known as the Allen Farm (or Allen Property), Cen-

tech Park North is the culmination of a decadeslong effort to find productive uses for the 60acre lot. In 2002, the Shrewsbury Development Corporation was formed to facilitate the redevelopment of the property.

After years of businessfriendly practices designed to attract commercial development, the property was sold in 2021 to NorthBridge Partners (NBP), LLC for $6.5 million. Centech Park North was subsequently developed, and gradually since that point, NorthBridge has been leasing out the property.

Currently, the site has a variety of tenants, including Repligen and Columbia Tech.

GRAFTON – At Town Meeting on May 11, Grafton residents voted to expend approximately $750,000 to replace the stadium turf field at Grafton High School, which has been used since 2012. The field is now several years past its expected lifespan.

Throughout the budgeting process, school officials said that the turf was becoming unsafe, potentially leading to injuries. In November 2025, two parents came before the School Committee claiming that their son – a sophomore on the football team – suffered a non-contact injury that coaches attributed to the playing surface.

The turf had been “patched” – a process where the granular rubber material is sucked out, then a glue is applied to the surface – frequently over the years. The field is extremely worn in

the center, and it has lost compression, according to district leadership. The district refills the granular rubber material throughout the season, but “patching” can only do so much.

Grafton expects to put bids out in early July, when it gains access to the fiscal 2027 capital funds designated for the project. Should the bid not be returned – which wouldn’t be alarming, said Superintendent Jay Cummings, considering it’s the peak of summer and among the busiest seasons for out-

door work – the district will spend $10,000 for temporary patches to get through the fall season. Work would then be completed in March, with the field ready for the 2027 spring season.

When the field is re placed, it will be the latest Grafton athletic facility to get an upgrade. In 2025, the Grafton High School gymnasium lights were replaced, and the floor was professionally refinished.

The other turf field – away from the stadium – recently added a scoreboard.

“If we had a parent, or community member, that wasn’t allowed in one of our buildings or our grounds … we can have a ‘no trespass’ on that individual. We can enter that in our own database and we’ll flag if that person enters,” said Reagan.

The district is still evaluating options, and an update is expected in July. The Community Advocate will provide updates about the decision when it is made.

(iv) Activities that involve the planned (non-emergency) disturbance or direct exposure to the petroleum-containing soil, such as those associated with underground utility and/or construction work, unless such activity is conducted in accordance with a Soil Management Plan and a Health and Safety Plan in accordance with Obligations 3(ii) and 3(iii) of this Notice; (v) Relocation of the petroleum-containing soil currently located below the floor of the building and as shown on Exhibit A-1 to different locations, unless such activity is first evaluated by an LSP who renders an Opinion that states that such relocation is consistent with maintaining a condition of No Significant Risk and such work is completed in accordance with a Soil Management Plan and a Health and Safety Plan in accordance with Obligations 3(ii) and 3(iii) of this Notice.

3. “Obligations and Conditions”, is amended to read as follows: (i) The integrity of the concrete floor of the building that is shown in Exhibit A-1, shall be maintained to prevent the direct contact with the affected soil, with the exception of during the course of underground utility and/or construction work. For said exception and prior to implementation thereof, the relevant utility company or companies (such as water, sewer, and/or natural gas or others) must be notified of this Notice of Activity and Use Limitation and the presence of their respective utility line(s) within the area subject to said Activity and Use Limitation. In addition, any underground utility and/or construction work that is likely to disturb the soil within the area subject to this Activity and Use Limitation requires the preparation and utilization of an appropriate Soil Management Plan, an appropriate Health and Safety Plan, and adherence to the Massachusetts Contingency Plan (310 CMR 40.000) concerning the excavation and handling of said soil; (ii) A Soil Management Plan must be prepared by a Licensed Site Professional and implemented prior to the commencement of any activity that is likely to disturb the soil currently located below the floor of the building and as shown on Exhibit A-1. The Soil Management Plan should address protection of the public, protection of the workers, anticipated duration of the project, extent and volume of soil excavation, staging, groundwater management, handling, storage, backfilling, restoration, and disposal procedures and include a description of the engineering controls and air monitoring procedures necessary to minimize exposure to workers and receptors in the vicinity to contaminated soil entrained by fugitive dust or particulates. (iii) A Health and Safety Plan for Site workers must be prepared in accordance with the provisions of 29 CFR 1926.65 by a qualified individual sufficiently experienced in worker health, and must

be implemented prior to the commencement of any activity that involves the removal and/or disturbance of soil, rendering it more accessible, as shown on Exhibit A-1. The Health and Safety Plan shall clearly describe and include a map showing the location of the contaminated soil and shall specify the types of personal protective equipment, environmental monitoring devices, and engineering controls necessary to maximize worker exposure to soil at the Property through dermal contact, ingestion, and/inhalation of contaminated soil entrained by particulate dust. Workers who may come in contact with soil must be informed of the location of the contamination and all requirements of the Health and Safety Plan. The Health and Safety Plan must be available on-Site throughout the course of the activity. (iv) Excavation and handling of soils must be conducted in accordance with the applicable requirements of 310 CMR 40.000 and Exhibit C to the Notice, is amended to reflect the presence of underground utilities (water, sewerage, and natural gas) in the Portion of the Property subject to this Notice, and is amended to list emergency utility repair as a Permitted activity with no requirements/conditions (i.e., being performed under a prior Soil Management Plan and Health and Safety Plan).

State Police trooper killed in off-duty accident honored by neighbors

By Evan Walsh Managing Editor WESTBOROUGH – At 4 p.m. on June 30, residents lined the sidewalks of Old Colony Drive in Westborough. It was a hot afternoon and rain was in the forecast, but still, they stood in solidarity. Some helped older neighbors get situated near the street.

The neighborhood was

mourning one of its own: Jacob G. Mick, a Massachusetts State Police trooper who tragically passed away in an off-duty motorcycle accident in Grafton on June 28. He was 31, and lived with his wife, Kaila, and infant daughter, Natalie, on Old Colony Drive.

As Mick’s body was transported from Westfield to Hays Funeral Home in Northborough, the hearse drove past Mick’s house as family members, neighbors, and solemn bystanders waited. At least 50 Massachusetts State Police vehicles were part of the procession.

“This neighborhood sticks together,” said Geoffrey Spofford, who lives on Old Colony Drive. “This is a terrific neighborhood filled with people who care about one another. People here are feeling this — they’re part of us. The family has this beautiful little daughter, and you can’t imagine something as tragic as this.”

Mick was raised in Hudson, later moving to Northborough and graduating from Algonquin Regional High School with the Class of 2013. He was a member of the hockey team. Mick earned a bachelor’s degree in business from Worcester State University.

He started a successful career in law enforcement, working for the Stow Police Department and Northborough Police Department, where his mother, Katie, has served as a dispatcher for many years.

Mick eventually completed his lifelong goal of becoming a Trooper with the Massachusetts State Police after working with the 88th Recruit Training Troop. Assigned to the Holden Barracks (C6), Mick quickly became someone others could depend on. He approached every situation with professionalism, humility, and unwavering integrity, the State Police said.

“Together, we mourn Trooper Jacob Mick, and extend our deepest sympathies to his wife, their infant daughter, his family, and all who loved him. He was a proud Trooper and public servant who never hesitated to answer the call. We remember and honor Trooper Mick’s years of service, and all he gave to the Commonwealth as well as to the Department,” said Superintendent of the State Police Geoffrey Noble.

In his obituary, Mick was remembered as someone who “served with pride, balanced obligation with respect and understanding, and was honored to stand beside the men and women who shared his commitment to protecting others.”

His obituary reads: “Those who knew Jake will remember his confidence, his infectious smile, and his ability to make others feel welcome. His unexpected and untimely passing leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of those who loved him, but the love and time he gave of himself will not be forgotten.”

Those on Old Colony Drive remembered Mick in a similar light. His wife grew up in the neighborhood, and many longtime residents of the street have known the family for generations. Since Mick passed, a State Trooper has been posted outside his Old Colony Drive house.

“They [the State Police] are amazing people,” Spofford told the Community Advocate. “Talk about a group that stays together. They take pride in it. This event today was as moving as you’ll ever see.”

COMMUNITY SPORTS Patience from Finn McDonough pays dividends for Post 397

By Evan Walsh Managing Editor SHREWSBURY – Finn McDonough stepped up to the plate with the game tied, two outs, and the bases loaded in the sixth inning. Five pitches into the game-defining at-bat, McDonough had worked the count to 3-2.

The sixth pitch McDonough saw was a tempting fastball, but he wisely laid off, bringing the winning run home and ultimately delivering Shrewsbury Post 397 an important 6-5 win over Northbridge Post 343 at Fitton Field on July 6.

“Whether it was a hit or walk, getting that run was huge late in the game,” he said.

Though McDonough — a rising junior who played for Shrewsbury High School in the spring — is one of the younger players on Post 397, his maturity, both on and off

the field, has impressed longtime skipper Frank Vaccaro.

“He’s unbelievable,” Vaccaro told the Community Advocate after the game. “He’s a young player that wants to compete — he’s not afraid.

He’s great defensively. He’s a young leader, and I really love the way he’s played.”

McDonough’s composure at the plate wouldn’t have been as game-changing had Post 397 not rallied beforehand. After two quick outs to open the inning, Cam Kelly (Shrewsbury High) drew a seven-pitch walk. Owen Michalowski (Shrewsbury High) singled, and Bryan Herlihy (Worcester Academy) took a base on balls.

From there, McDonough’s walk put Shrewsbury ahead.

“Last year, I didn’t really play baseball in the summer.

said. “Had a good season, and I wanted to keep that going in the summer too.”

After conceding an early run, Shrewsbury drew six walks in the first inning to pull ahead, 4-1, tacking on another run in the second frame. But Northbridge kept chipping away at the lead, plating runs in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings to even the score at 5-5.

When Tommy Kursonis (Doherty) entered the game, Northbridge’s momentum halted. At the plate, the fouryear Post 397 player always makes an impact. On the mound, he was just as dominant, pitching 2 2/3 innings of hitless relief.

“He’s just a competitor.

get itself back in the game, but he knows that these types of wins — the ones that come down to one at-bat — will ultimately make his team better in the long run.

“Good teams win the tough games. We’re not good yet, but we’re getting good. We have to learn how to win the big ones.

88-year-old Westborough pickleball coach is trailblazer for women’s sports WESTBOROUGH – By 8 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning, dozens of local players aged 55 and older have already gathered, paddles in hand, ready for the morning’s drop-in program at the Nelson Ball Pickleball Courts at Lake Chauncy. At the center stands Carol Bishop, Westborough’s dedicated pickleball coordinator.

Bishop is the friendly face who greets each participant by name as they arrive. But to those who play under her guidance, she’s the tactical engine that makes Westborough pickleball thrive. Before the clock strikes 11 a.m., Bishop will have mixed and matched dozens of players into balanced teams of four.

After each match, she rotates the groups so everyone plays multiple games with different teammates each time.

Bishop’s success on the courts is no accident: It’s the culmination of a lifetime spent breaking barriers and coaching athletics. Long before pickleball became a national phenomenon, Bishop was a feisty teenager fighting for the chance to play basketball like the boys did. Growing up in Chicago in the 1950s, when organized girls’ teams did not exist, she honed her skills playing with neighborhood boys. Determined not to let anything keep her off the court, she would diligently complete her homework, then quietly crawl out of the bathroom window to slip away and play ball — all without her mother finding out.

At the time, the landscape for female athletes was virtually nonexistent. There were no organized girls’ teams or opportunities for competitive play. Rather than accepting the status quo, Bishop became a trailblazer. She personally organized the first girls’ basketball teams at her junior and senior high schools — where she averaged an astonishing 40 points per game.

She eventually dominated the Chicago Parks District and AAU circuits, capturing city-wide championships in softball and volleyball.

Her athletic prowess quickly caught the attention of professional scouts. Though recruited to play professional softball, Bishop chose higher

By Evan Walsh Managing Editor SHREWSBURY – In his decades leading Shrewsbury Post 397, Head Coach Frank Vaccaro has seen few like Connor Mudd.

“He’s a hell of a lead-off batter, and a hell of a centerfielder, too. We’ve had some pretty good centerfielders in this program, and he’s in with them. He’s working hard. He is smooth as hell out there. The kid is tremendous,” Vaccaro said.

In his first year with Post 397, Mudd is making an impact. After a successful career at Deerfield Academy, the Shrewsbury native will play baseball at Skidmore College in the fall. He’s currently undecided about his major, but eyeing something in economics.

These historic achievements culminated in 2008 with her induction into the Wheaton College Hall of Fame. Bishop later translated that elite athletic drive into a 36-year career as a physical education teacher, inspiring students at Doherty Memorial High School and South Community High School. As a coach, she led high school

teams across six different sports, guiding the Doherty girls’ tennis team to nine district titles. Bishop also served as a basketball official for 32 years and became the president of the Central Massachusetts Board of Women Officials.

Under Bishop’s watch, the Westborough pickleball program has grown into more than just a sports clinic: It has become a vital social hub for the town’s older adults, fueled by the passion of a woman who spent her life proving that sports belong to everyone.

You’ve had a busy spring playing baseball. Why did you decide to play Legion this year?

“I think it’s a great chance to get to play every day. College is going to be a grind. I just love the game of baseball, and I knew that playing Legion, I’d have the opportunity to play more games. … I get to play six to seven times per week here.”

“I probably knew about half the team coming in this year, and I’ve gotten to know a bunch of [the other players]. I went to boarding school, but I went to Shrewsbury before, so I’ve gotten to know a lot of these guys over the years – Little League, All-Stars.

It’s been great to play with this group. Made some new friends.”

“I love steak and rice. Get some protein, get some carbs. It’s a simple meal, but it never misses. Some type of New York strip, maybe. I don’t hate steak tips, either. Can’t go wrong with steak.”

“I listen to all types of music.

Right now, mainly country music.

Simple, Morgan Wallen. I listen to every type of music. [Teammate] Drew O’Connell and I will put on anything before games to get in the mood. Post Malone, Morgan Wallen are my most-listened to right now.”

Is there a quote or motto that you live by?

“There’s always going to be someone outworking you if you don’t outwork yourself. You always have to put the work in. You can never be lackadaisical, especially on the baseball field. If you’re not ready every single pitch, the ball will find you. You always have to be giving 100 percent effort.”

Deserted on an island, what If you could travel anywhere, items would you need? where would you go?

“I’m bringing Drew O’Connell.

“I’m going to go to Cancún, A machete. And a big cut of steak.”
