MARLBOROUGH – Marlborough’s proposed West Side Fire Station is back in the limelight. The Marlborough City Council on August 17 considered an order – drafted by the office of Mayor J. By Evan Walsh Managing Editor SHREWSBURY – For three hours on a summer Saturday, a group of 10-, 11-, and 12-year-olds turned into some of the town’s best salespeople. Over the course of an afternoon, they held homemade signs along Holman Street, promoted their cause, and helped customers. As excitement built, the middleschoolers could be heard enthusiastically shouting. “Lemonade! Lemonade!” But this wasn’t just another lemonade stand. On August 15, the town’s youth banded together to raise funds for Kaylee Machado, an 11-year-old Shrewsbury resident who was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer. She is now undergoing chemotherapy. “No one should fight alone,” Sara Mattero told the Community Advocate.
Mattero’s children – Emma and Gianna – were at the forefront of the effort. Like many children, they wanted to peddle lemonade during the hot summer months, but after learning of Kaylee’s diagnosis, they decided to donate the funds to support their friend. Their lemonade stand, held on Edgewater Avenue two weeks ago, raised over $1,500. It quickly became a community effort. The Shrewsbury Police Department stopped by the stand for refreshments, Select Board members supported the cause, and members of the Shrewsbury girls’ varsity soccer team showed their support. Said Mattero: “My kids were like, ‘Holy cow.’ We couldn’t believe it.” And after that success, more wellwishers wanted to get involved. The Holman Street stand – which offered lemonade and baked goods – brought
