MARLBOROUGH – Heading off the trail that goes through the Desert Conservation Area, the smell of smoke is faint at first. It is the first remnant of the 25-acre brush fire that burned deep in the area lastMovingweek. deeper into the woods the smell becomes unmistakable. Emerging into the site of the fire, the woods are much less dense. The felled trees on the ground are black and charred. The ground itself is covered with a sheet of ash, which plumes into clouds when stepped on. Even a week after the fire, it is still trav eling underground and flaring up when it hits pockets of oxygen. Desert fire puts out trunk comment will be Sept. 12

Dear Hudson Voters: There is an important Democratic primary election on September 6th, and I’m excited to cast my vote for Kim Driscoll to be our next Lieuten ant Governor.  As the Mayor of Salem, Kim is credited with turning the city around from fiscal mismanage ment to record surplus and made city government more inclusive, innovative, and responsive, along the way. Kim has championed public schools, fought for more affordable housing, and turned Salem into a leader in the fight against the climate crisis. Thanks to her leadership, Salem is now considered one of the best places to live in KimMassachusetts!Driscollunderstands the value of good government and she sees the big picture, while paying attention to the smallest details that make government most effective. As a mom of three, the wife of a union bricklayer, and as the only graduate of Massachusetts’ public higher education running for Lt. Governor, she understands our struggles and our values and will be ready on day one.  Kim is a dynamic leader, with a proven record of getting things done for working people. That’s why she is the right person at the right time for our Commonwealth.

An Italian Classic Sangiovese (sahn-joh-veh-seh) is the most widely planted red wine grape in Italy. These grapes thrive in Central Italy where vines adapt readily to the soil and climate of the specific region in which they are located. The majority of grapes are used as the base for popular red blends such as Chianti. Variance in terroir and vintner choices account for the many different styles and flavor profiles of the wines. Generally, Sangiovese wines have a dominant cherry flavor that is nuanced with notes of berries and flowers. Wines from warmer areas tend to be high in alcohol and acidity, whereas those from cooler areas tend to develop powerful tannins. Pair these food-friendly wines with tomato-based dishes, roasted meats, steaks, and seafood. The wine department at JULIO’S LIQUORS carries over 3,000 labels from 16 different countries. Our Beer department contains one of the largest selections of microbrews, domestics, imports, Belgians and Trappist beers, totaling over 1,000 beers in stock! Last, but not least, our Spirits department carries many hard-to-find items from single malt scotches to high-end vodkas and gins. permit for Walcott Heritage Farms was denied at an Aug. 23 meet ing last year with a 6-5 vote. Councilors David Doucette, Laura Wagner, John Irish, Mark Oram, Samantha Perl man and Sean Navin voted against approving the permit while councilors Ossing, Kathleen Robey, Christian Dumais, Donald Landers and Robert Tunnera voted in favor. Councilors attributed their votes against the permit to a decision of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation not to place a traffic light at the site’s location, which is on Route 20.

Marlborough public comment for Walcott Heritage project will be Sept. 12

“So opening satisfied that element of the court order, but the substantive rationale was back in July when we set stuff up, councilors were not going to be in attendance [for the Aug. 22 meeting],” Ossing said. “We wanted to make sure we had everybody there.” Ossing said the council wanted to make sure every councilor could weigh in on theHetopic.said they checked with the city’s legal department, which said there weren’t any issues if they did not have pub lic testimony for the project before Aug. 30. “All of the folks were there that voted on it originally. They all expressed interest to weigh in, so we’ll have them all avail able on the 12th and conduct the public hearing then,” Oss ingThesaid.special

The council had previously denied a special permit for the proposed 140-unit, threebuilding residential project, but the developer appealed the decision. The state Land Court later remanded it back to the CityCityCouncil.Council President Michael Ossing told the Community Advocate the court order said the council had to hold a public hearing by Aug. 30, but it did not have to complete it.

At the Aug. 22 meeting the City Council also placed on file a letter from Arthur Skura, a Marlborough resident opposed to the Skuraproject.said the agreement would allow the project to begin on April 14, 2023. He said this would be before the Walcott | from page 1 traffic needs of the public have been“Themet.citizens of Marlbor ough have continuously stated that without lights the Walcott Estates buildings proposal at 339 Boston Post Road poses a grave public safety risk,” Skura wrote.Skura urged councilors to reject the settlement agree ment.

If you’re wondering if home prices are going to come down due the cooldown in the housing market or a potential recession, here’s what you need to know.

Experts Increase 2022 Home Price Projections | MyK CMAs the chart shows, most sources adjusted up, and now call for more appreciation in 2022 than they originally pro jected this January. But why are experts so confident the housing market will see ongo ing appreciation? It’s because of supply and demand in most markets. As Bankrate says: “After all, supplies of homes for sale remain near record lows. And while a jump in mortgage rates has damp ened demand somewhat, demand still outpaces supply, thanks to a combination of little new construction and strong household formation by large numbers of millen nials.”Knowing that experts fore cast home prices will continue

Not only are experts forecasting home prices will continue to appreciate nationwide this year, but most of them also actually increased their projections for home price appreciation from their original 2022 forecasts (shown in green in the chart below): to appreciate in most markets and that they’ve actually in creased their original projec tions for this year should help you answer the question: will home prices fall? According to the latest forecasts, experts are confident prices will con tinue to appreciate this year, although at a more moderate rate than they did in 2021. Bottom Line If you’re worried home prices are going to decline, rest assured many experts raised their forecasts to say they’ll continue to appreci ate in most markets this year. If you have questions about what’s happening with home prices in our local area, let’s connect.

Board member James Quinn said the contract for the project, which is to Aetna Bridge Company, will be paid for through American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funding. Hud son has been allocated a total of $5.9 million in ARPA funds. Quinn, who is the only member of the board who had been inside the bridge’s culvert and seen the damaged section, said when the damage was discovered, the town was instructed to close the street. He said that Department of Public Works Director Eric Ryder convinced authorities to cover up the damaged section of the roadway instead. “I have to give Mr. Ryder a heck of a lot of credit for ar ranging to at least keep one side of the street open for us during construction, and to have kept the street open to begin with for all this time,” Quinn said. In a conversation with the Community Advocate, Ryder said that construction on the bridge was planned to start the Tuesday after Labor Day. The bridge’s eastbound lane will remain in normal service while the westbound lane will be detoured, he added.

& Marlborough conservation officer looks to rejuvenation in the Desert following fire

“This is what happens with wildfires, you have to monitor them for a while just to see that everything is out,” said Marl borough Conservation Officer PriscillaRyderRyder.andfour others came out to the site of the fire on Friday to examine the dam age from the fire. They car ried shovels to put out small flare-ups.Inthedistance, a large oak tree fell over. Closer to the tree, smoke could be seen ris ing from the ground. The large oak quickly began to smolder on the Miketrunk.Marshall, a conserva tion volunteer, began pouring sand on the trunk to put out theWhilesmolder.itdied down at first, it later burst out into an open flame. Marshall put the flame out, but the group called the fire department to put out the flare-ups.Ryder said the weather would determine how long flare-ups could be expected and smolders would likely continue until there is significant rain or snow at the Desert.

Desert fire | from page 1 and removing old cars in the earlyThe1990s.Desert is a pitch pine scrub oak forest, which Ryder said is a unique habitat for this region. The sandy, dry soil there supports pitch pine scrub oaks, which in turn aid unique insects and birds. “The state is really inter ested in making sure that we protect it,” Ryder said.

The only concern, she said, is that if the trees are near a trail, they can fall on people. However, the fire was in a more isolated area of the Desert where this is less of a risk. Ryder recommends that people do not walk through the burn area.

This photo shows the extent of the damage caused by the Desert brush fire.

A fire-dependent ecosystem The Desert is approximately 615 acres that borders the towns of Hudson and Sudbury through the MarlboroughHudson State Forest and the Sudbury Valley Trustees con servation land. The site looked ravaged in the aftermath of the brushfire, but Ryder said that it will not really have any long-term ecological consequences for the desert, which is a firedependent ecosystem. “Fires in forests are damag ing to people and human stuff, but in and of themselves they rejuvenate forests quite a bit,” Ryder said. “Come back in a month or two months, it will be green. It’s that fast.” That’s because of the ash, which is full of nutrients, that the fires produce. The city does controlled burns at the Desert for this reason.

“I’ve been here for 29 years, and we’ve never had an uncon trolled fire here,” Ryder said. She applauded the fire de partment and state Depart ment of Recreation and Con servation fire warden, saying they did an amazing job con trolling the wildfire. Before her tenure at the city, however, she said there were many fires when the area was not preserved. They began cleaning up the area

Ryder said some of the trees lost in the fire will come back, while others will rot. “Dead trees in the woods are beautiful for the birds and the bugs,” Ryder said. “It’s part of that whole habitat.”

SHREWSBURY - The Shrews bury Police Department has recently detected an uptick of two scams occurring in both Shrewsbury and neighboring communities.Thefirstscam is when a scammer calls an elderly per son asking for money and claiming the scammer is some one the person knows, such as a grandchild. Shrewsbury police said the scammers are also posing as doctors or law enforcement officers stating the person’s grandchild has been in an Accordingaccident.tothe police de partment, the suspects will act like they know personal information about the victims, such as their names, the names of their children and grand children, phone numbers and addresses.Additionally, the scammers may claim that the victim’s grandchild or child was in volved in an OUI accident with injuries and need bail money. They may also identify themselves as assistant district attorneys and call from a few different phone numbers. The scammers may call back alleging someone died as a result of the crash and request additional bail money. As part of the scam, they will have the victim mail money to a specific address or send some one to their house to pick up the money, the department said. They may also instruct vic tims to go to the bank, deposit or withdraw large amounts of cash and not explain to the bank tellers why they are tak ing out money. To prevent others from catching onto the scam, the “grandchild” may also say they are in trouble and beg the grandparents not to tell any other family members, accord ing to the police department.

Among their tips to avoid the scam, Shrewsbury police suggested not providing the grandchild’s name and bank or credit card numbers before notifying family members of a suspicious call.

Keith’s Music will be moving to in Boylston next

BOYLSTON - Keith’s Music House announced big news recently: they will be moving to a new site at 220 East Temple Street in Boylston in early spring of 2023. “The new location is twice the size of the old one,” said owner Keith Lewis. “We’ll have six practice rooms, and we plan to put in a coffee shop and a stage for performances. We want this to be seen as a legitimate place for musicians to play.”When Lewis opened his music school in 2015, he had 10 students. The popularity of his school’s offerings is evident by its growth — they have steadily grown to 150 students throughout the school year, and 60 students in their sum mer“Weprogram.reallyserve two differ ent groups,” said Lewis. “We have our main group during the school year, and the kids enrolled in our summer Rock Sessions program.” A common thread, though, is that Keith’s Music House has served students of all abilities and has tailored its lessons to each individual student. “We have one student who is legally blind,” Lewis said. “He is one of the most talented kids I have come across. He plays everything. It’s like a su perpower. My daughter is in charge of our social media, and my son strings guitars. We’re all proud of this school.” Lewis spoke of his team as equal colleagues. “I don’t have anybody who works for me, they work with me,” said Lewis. “I couldn’t do what we do without them.”

That’s because a month after he began coaching in 2020, the world shut down due to the pandemic, and a year later, he was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer. “I was going through chemo treatments, so I wasn’t even around for the off-season last year. So this is my first legitimate off-season with the kids. It’s been great,” he said.

You go and cut a tree and you can’t put it in the fire right away, you gotta let it season for a little bit. Once it’s seasoned, you can go ahead and throw it in the fire.”

“She gives us the best possi ble opportunities to be success ful — whether it’s equipment, access to facilities or practice time,” he DiCarlosaid.said like other WHS teams, football adds “a sense of community” to the school as students can participate them selves, or cheer on their peers. “Joe has been here for three years and he has worked hard to rebuild the program. Joe’s awesome,” she said. “Him and the kids have put in a lot of ef fort this pre-season and we are looking forward to seeing that on the field.”
