“Bikers are the most giving people ever,” he said.

For the second year, prior to the ride, Shawna’s best friend Angie Moulton sang the national anthem.

This year’s 55-mile route traveled through 10 communities including Marlborough and Hudson. Larassa led the ride with an escort from motorcycle police representing Marlborough, Grafton and Auburn.

Other supporters joined ride participants afterward.

Postride activities included lunch catered by Brad Tolan and Bemo. Joey D’s Wingz ‘n Thingz donated a portion of its sales to the fundraiser. Kids were treated to free ice cream.

Live musical entertainment was provided by the Missy Maxfield Project. Its repertoire featured a blend of classic and Southern rock, R&B, pop and country.

Fundraising continued with raffles. Among the big-ticket prizes was a Coolster 125cc dirt bike donated by Scott Latour in memory of Jessica Simone and Emily Blouin.

Also, Larassa agreed to get

COMMUNITY BUSINESS

Tavolino remains a community-centric gathering place post-pandemic

By Kathryn Acciari Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - As the pandemic loosens its hold, Tavolino restaurant remains firmly placed as a hub of the community.

“We are definitely excited to host more events and are starting to get more groups coming in,” says General Manager Abby Winant. “During COVID, we had to cap the number of people who could be in the restaurant. Now we have business groups, large families, and local sports teams who come in. We host the Westborough Rotary Club; I really appreciate that they think of us for their events.”

The patio at Tavolino is a favorite spot with patrons.

“I love our patio. Everyone loves it,” says Winant. “We had the patio prior to COVID, and

we have kept the spacing of the tables since the pandemic. We’ve become aware that people like to have the extra space as they dine and sip wine.”

Another change that remains post-pandemic is the plexiglass spacers between the booths in the bar.

“We kept the dividers between the booths to create a more private space for people. It also cuts down on the noise level in the bar,” she says.

The take-out business at Tavolino has blossomed since the pandemic, and the restaurant has retained its pandemicrelated take-out counter.

A popular series for take-out is the family meals. They feed four to six people generously, and include salad and bread with dipping oil. Some of the family meals offered are pasta bolognese, chicken marsala, and chicken parmesan. A new addition is steak tips with potatoes and green beans.

“The family meals are very popular,” Winant says. “They are half-trays of pasta and meat and easily feed six people. They are just the right size for a family.”

Winant recommends that people order the family meals at least an hour before they need them.

Winant is also excited about the seasonal offerings on the menu.

“We change the menu three to four times a year so that seasonal produce can be offered,” she says. “We embrace the Westborough Farmers’ Market, and our chef uses ingredients from the market to plan our specials on the weekend.”

The staff get excited knowing that they are serving vegetables that have never been frozen, and the farmers like to

hear what the restaurant is doing with their produce.

The philosophy at Tavolino is to create traditional Italian recipes using the freshest ingredients, then add a twist to keep it interesting. For example, they recently modified their caprese salad to use creamy burrata instead of mozzarella cheese.

This type of creativity resonates with the restaurant’s community.

“We want to treat people like family. We like to call them by name. We want to be that place where you’ll get warm, welcoming service,” Winant says.

Are You Ready?

By Gary Kelley “I was born ready,” is a common response. And are you ready?

To be ready means you know your: • Plans and are ready to execute. “Plan your work then work your plan.” Know your next step. You don’t have to have the forwarding completed with the post office…. just know a direction.

If dates become fluid, do you know your fallback or plan B? • Financial situation or have plans to meet with a financial planner or loan officer to discuss. Many people are surprised to learn their equity position and how far it might go towards a new place.

This causes many to freeze… and the home can sometimes fall into disrepair (sometimes because owners don’t have the money needed, and other times are unaware. It’s a shame when a large asset degrades. • Disposition strategy. We accumulate stuff. Sometimes it’s our stuff, other times it’s our families or friend’s stuff. There are so many options it can be overwhelming. And some of the more obvious places have restrictions on when they can accept items. (Goodwill seems to accept everything.)

“Success” at this often degrades to measuring how many dumpsters are used.

While some stuff is truly junk, often stuff is of value to someone in need.

This can be an overwhelming step for some. We suggest labeling the things to be saved and getting the rest out. • Repair strategy – most homes need some “lipstick.” Realtors are good at identifying those areas.

I was speaking to someone today who envisioned this as a large ticket items (>$20,000). What was needed in their case was a fraction of that… For example, the front “storm” door was in very poor condition. Rather than spend $500 on a new one, we simply removed the one there. Deck need staining?

You may have a neighbor-

hood kid home from college more than happy to stain the deck (keep them safe and off ladders.) • Cleaning strategy – everyone cleans their home to a level where they are comfortable. We stage our listings, and inevitably the home needs a cleaning after we’ve stirred up the dust bunnies. Before and after showings is also a time to give the home some attention. Once everything is out, is another time… often glossed over. The standard is “broom clean.”

We like to say it needs to be as clean as you’d expect it when taking occupancy. That’s not always the same as when you moved in! (We just had a house where it was not clean and insisted on the seller paying for a professional cleaner before closing.)

Are you ready?

By now you’ve probably figured our I’m asking if you are ready to move. We can always discuss this with you to help formulate your answers. Enjoy and stay sanitized!

United Way of Tri-County launches backpack drive

REGION - The United Way of Tri-County’s annual Tools for School backpack drive is under way.

United Way Director of Volunteerism Barbara LaGrenade is working with 18 local agencies to give more than 1,000 backpacks filled with supplies to local children.

Those interested in helping the drive can do so by either donating $25 for each backpack and required supplies, choosing a child to sponsor and buying the child the backpack and supplies needed, purchasing back-to-school supplies on Amazon or volunteering to help assemble the backpacks and supplies.

“Kids may not always speak up, but having a backpack full of essential supplies; notebooks, rulers, pencils and art supplies, is reassuring,” said United Way of Tri-County President and CEO Paul Mina in a press release. “Arriving outfitted for the start of school helps them feel confident in their ability to perform at school and with the proper supplies, realize added independence, self-assurance and the start of a successful school year.”

People can also purchase school supplies and deliver them directly to the Marlborough Community Cupboard, but the press release said they should coordinate with LaGrenade by calling her at 508370-4902.

United Way asked that all backpacks be delivered by Aug. 19 before they are distributed to children on Aug. 22.

To donate, people can visit the United Way Tools for Schools page at https://www. uwotc.org/backpack.

COMMUNITY SPORTS Shrewsbury heads to the World Series

By Laura Hayes Managing Editor SHREWSBURY - After being knocked out of the Zone 4 playoffs, Shrewsbury Post 397 is heading to the American Legion World Series.

The team had an undefeated run through the Northeast Regional tournament and punched their card to the World Series by beating Rhode Island’s Upper Deck Post 14 on Sunday.

“For us, it was just any other game,” said Zach Amero. “We knew what was at stake, but we’ve got to go out and win the game, got to do our job.”

Last month, the team’s district season came to a close after they fell to Milford. However, the team was still able to compete in the tournament as the host team.

Ultimately, Shrewsbury went all the way and beat Upper Deck 4-2.

“Absolutely phenomenal,” said manager Frank Vaccaro. “They battled. They came back. They were on a mission.”

He continued, “I’ve got to tell you, if we didn’t win this thing, I would have been totally, totally disappointed for them. I knew we could do it. It was a question of putting it all together at once, and they picked the right time to put it all together.”

The Northeast Regional Tournament, which Shrewsbury hosted at the College of the Holy Cross, kicked off last Wednesday.

Shrewsbury ended up beating Connecticut team Waterford Legion Post 161 13-3 that first game. They went on to beat Upper Deck 3-0, Vermont Post 91 3-1 and Greece, N.Y, 12-4.

Vaccaro said he was feeling shocked when he realized the team beat Upper Deck, noting that it was the third time the team has qualified in five years.

“We’re going to go to Shelby. It’s a wonderful tournament. We’re going to be spoiled. We hope we’re going to represent Massachusetts and the northeast really well — and Shrewsbury,” Vaccaro said.

Post 397 is one of eight teams nationwide advancing to the American Legion World Series, which will be held from Aug. 11 to 16 in Shelby, N.C.

“It’s been a dream of mine,” said Amero. “It’s just a real moment right now. I haven’t felt anything like it.”

Amero said he was happy to be heading to North Carolina with his Post 397 teammates.

“I wouldn’t want to do it with anyone else,” he said.

When asked what made the team special, Amero said it was their grit.

“Everybody loves each other,” Amero said. “It really is a brotherhood.”

Now that the team is heading to North Carolina, Vaccaro and Amero shared their thoughts on what their next steps will be and how they will be successful.

Vaccaro said the team would take a break before flying out on Tuesday and practicing in North Carolina on Wednesday.

“Just what we’ve been doing – play for each other,” Amero said. “No one on the team is selfish. We love each other. We’re going to get it done for everyone.”
