By Laura Hayes Senior Community Reporter WESTBOROUGH - Westborough police officers are at the now town-owned Regal Cinemas property on Turnpike Road every shift and every day, dealing with issues ranging from vandalism to a sex offender being found behind the building with a “young child.” That’s according to Police Chief Jeffrey Lourie, who offered an update on the site during Town Meeting last month. “In my humble opinion, I think it’s just a matter of time before something happens,” Lourie said. One of the articles approved during Town Meeting called to transfer the property to the Select Board to handle its disposal. During Town Meeting, Select Board member Allen Edinberg said the board anticipated selling the site during the 2023 fiscal year. Shrewsbury’s Oak, Sherwood schools celebrate new unified basketball team SHREWSBURY - Fans filled Shrewsbury’s Oak Middle School gym to the brim on March 24, gathering to watch the Shrewsbury and Auburn middle school unified basketball teams face off. This game was extra special for Shrewsbury because this was the team’s first home game in its history. “Tomorrow is just going to be fantastic,” head coach Jason Ponticelli told the Community Advocate during a practice the day before the game. “Tomorrow is going to be something really, really special that this school has been waiting two years for.” COVID-19 disrupted plans Unified basketball was brought to the middle school level two years ago. Shrewsbury had a team preparing for its season. It held a few practices and was getting ready for its first game when COVID-19 struck. It was March 12 when Ponticelli, who was the assistant coach at the time, said staff received word that students and staff weren’t coming back the next day because the schools needed to be cleaned as a pandemic precaution.
