Westborough prepares for winter with stroll, parade, tree lighting
Shrewsbury eighth graders may no longer be admitted to Assabet Vocational High School, Superintendent says
By Ed Karvoski Jr. Contributing Writer
By Laura Hayes Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY - Shrewsbury eighth-graders may no longer be able to enroll at Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School, Schools Superintendent Joseph Sawyer recently told the Board of Selectmen. State policy has changed, Sawyer said, explaining that vocational technical high schools must give preference to students in their member communities. “Given the demand that they expect for the 300 seats that they will fill next year in their freshman class, which they’ll essentially have to do through a lottery, they expect that it’ll be unlikely that there will be any seats left over for communities like ourselves [and] Clinton,” Sawyer said. “It’s quite possible that zero current eighthgraders in Shrewsbury will be admitted to Assabet,” he said. “And, frankly, it’s probably the exact same story at any other vocational technical high school that they might want to apply to.” Assabet’s public relations team did not respond to a request for comment for this article prior to press time. WESTBOROUGH - Holiday shopping in Westborough officially began Nov. 28 when the Winter Stroll returned with over 45 businesses participating throughout the town. Businesses offered refreshments, activities and discounts. Shuttle buses were sponsored by realtor Gary Kelley. After last year’s hiatus due to the pandemic and 2019’s scaled-down version amid inclement weather, Westborough once again prepared for the winter season this year with a stroll, parade and tree lighting. This ever-evolving event is a collaborative effort of Westborough’s Rotary Club, Recreation Department, Public Library and Economic Development Committee. Food trucks were stationed outside the Fire Department. Shopping sprees were complimented with family-friendly activities at the library. There, Mrs. Claus read holiday stories along with seasonal crafts. After dusk, strollers viewed a light parade on West Main Street with decorated vehicles representing residents, nonprofits and businesses. The Westborough High School Marching Band brought music to the parade route. Santa Claus arrived in his sleigh atop a flatbed truck. The event culminated with the Rotarians’ long-running tree lighting at the rotary followed by kids meeting Santa. New this year, the lights display was professionally installed as phase one of a three-year plan. For more photos, visit CommunityAdvocate.com.
