By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor WESTBOROUGH - When the Worcester Red Sox threw open the doors of their sprawling downtown stadium this month for their first game without COVID-19 restrictions, Westborough’s Victoria Silva, 13, took the high profile pregame role of singing the national anthem.

After belting out a notoriously difficult vocal performance before 6,000 fans, Silva said she relished the opportunity.

“It was really fun,” she recently told the Community Advocate.

A partial annular eclipse shines brilliantly as the moon casts a shadow over the sun.

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor REGION - The sun burned bright around the curve of the moon Thursday morning as a rare astronomical alignment treated the region to an annular “ring of fire” eclipse.

Occurring as the moon briefly obscured part of the sun’s light, this eclipse was not the kind of total eclipse that plunges areas into complete darkness. Rather, even at prime viewing locations, primarily in Canada, the

sun’s outer layers shone around the moon’s surface, giving the annular eclipse its “ring of fire” nickname.

Locally, peak eclipse coverage took place shortly after sunrise, around 5:30 a.m.

Early risers with proper eye protection saw the moon taking a “bite” out of the sun.

While solar eclipses are rare, the region has seen them before, most recently in 2017.

That year, millions across the US witnessed a total eclipse. Massachusetts was

SHREWSBURY - It’s official — Shrewsbury residents will no longer be able to turn left from South Street onto Route 20.

The Board of Selectmen voted during their June 8 meeting to amend the traffic rules and orders, now requiring drivers to turn right.

“This is the final step, so to speak, in the work and receipt of public comments that the board has had with regards to making safety improvements along Route 20, especially at South Street,” said Town Manager Kevin Mizikar.

The selectmen’s vote established the regulation on the town’s books and will allow the Shrewsbury Police Department to enforce the turns, Mizikar said.

police that she thought the truck was far enough away, but it was driving faster than she thought.

Since that incident, Shrewsbury has sent a letter to the Massachusetts Department of Transportation recommending the left turn restrictions.

Additionally, the town has requested federal funds for Route 20 improvements through U.S. Congressman James McGovern’s (D-MA 02) office.

During the June meeting, Mizikar announced that he received word from McGovern’s office that $8 million was included in the House transportation bill for Route 20.

Mizikar said it will still need to be considered in the Senate bill.

“It’s a good starting point,” he said. “If it wasn’t in this House bill, then it wouldn’t be considered.”

As this conversation has continued, leaders like Mizkar and State Representative Hannah Kane have noted that their work long preceded the Al Hamra crash in March.

Speaking with the Community Advocate after that incident, Kane discussed her efforts dating back to 2016 to improve safety along the Route 20 Corridor.

After initial outreach, she said, the state embarked on a multi-year study to eventually produce the Route 20 Corridor Master Plan, which recommended improvements.

With that plan in hand, the region saw public hearings and Board of Selectmen discussions regarding Route 20.

From there, early last year, the state also lowered the speed limit for part of the traffic artery to 45 miles per hour.

That followed further outreach from Kane, Kane said.

NORTHBOROUGH - A Northborough resident recently snapped a unique image of a chipmunk hanging out in her backyard.

Clinging to a birdfeeder, the smallerthan-pint-sized rodent peeked around a pole as Sandy Howard noticed his presence.

“To me, he appears to be saying, ‘If I stay very, very still, the lady with the camera won’t be able to see me!’” she wrote in an email to the Community Advocate.

Across the region, individuals long cooped up by the COVID-19 pandemic on top of a familiarly cold New England winter have recently been enjoying the outdoors in droves.

California Chardonnay

ndeniably t he most popu lar white wine grapes in the United States, Chardonnay and California are synonymous with one another. This wine grape was first introduced in California in the 1940s, but their Chardonnays didn’t gain a strong foothold in the wine market until after winning the Judgement of Paris in a 1976 blind taste test. Westborough to build second monument to honor Revolutionary War soldiers Historian says existing plaque contains errors, omissions

By Susan Gonsalves Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - To set the record straight and “properly commemorate Westborough’s substantial contribution” when the alarm sounded on April 19, 1775, resident David Nourse recently proposed that a second plaque be placed in Minuteman Park.

The plaque would honor the 101 men who marched into battle in Lexington and Concord at the start of the Revolutionary War. Although Minuteman Park currently has a plaque dedicated to 46 minutemen from town, Nourse told the Select Board on June 8 that it contains several errors and does not tell the whole story, only memorializing one company’s worth of men.

In fact, Westborough had two militia companies led by Captain George Baker and Captain Seth Morse along with a minute company helmed by

Captain Edmund Brigham.

They collectively marched into battle that day, he said.

Nourse reviewed the various Massachusetts Historical Society muster rolls preserved in the archives along with citations from a Soldiers and Sailors publication. The documents included names, ranks, mileage traveled and monetary pay records.

When a bicentennial commission in 1975 set out to honor Westborough’s minutemen, it apparently relied heavily on a documentation of Westborough history by Reverend Heman Packard De Forest and only included Captain Brigham’s company response.

Brigham is identified incorrectly as “Edward,” on the existing plaque. And several other errors were made recording names and ranks, Nourse explained.

Noting there is no way to correct the existing monument, Nourse proposed erecting an ad-

ditional one, featuring a bronze medal set on a stone boulder.

Nourse began researching the information in spring 2019, having been aware of his ancestor Daniel’s service in the American Revolutionary War. He said that the proposal was unanimously supported by the Trustees for Soldiers’ Memorials. Nourse added that he was hopeful they wouldn’t need taxpayer money for the project. Instead, he said it might be raised through organizations and private supporters.

Welch said that his mother is a librarian researcher for the Daughters of the American Revolution and his wife and daughter are involved with the organization.

He said that in 1775, Westborough had a population of around 1,000, with 500 men.

Therefore, it is noteworthy that 101 or 20 percent of 500 men answered the call to battle.

Select Board member Ian Johnson noted that a lot of the names sound familiar and many are street names. He said that he is fully supportive of getting the

project done and “done right.”

Select Board Chair Allen Edinberg thought the research was “captivating,” in how individuals could connect its names to be honored with local landmarks, etc. He said leaving the existing monument in place and installing a second plaque is “clearly the way to go.”

The board members voted to have the Trustees for Soldiers’ Memorials take responsibility for the project’s administration and also unanimously expressed their support.

Letters of interest sought for Town Seal Review Committee WESTBOROUGH - Those interested in joining Westborough’s soon-to-be-formed Town Seal Review Committee can now submit letters of interest to the Town Moderator.

Established by Town Meeting vote last month, the committee will review the history of town seals in Westborough, consider whether to replace Westborough’s current seal and provide a report to a future town meeting based on that deliberation.

If it suggests changing the seal, the committee will be further tasked with laying out a possible process for making that happen.

Letters of interest must be received by June 30, 2021. A review of the letters will begin on July 1, 2021.

Selectmen give Mizikar an outstanding review

By Laura Hayes Contributing Writer SHREWSBURY - A skillful communicator, a leader and an excellent public servant — those were some of the words the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen used to describe Town Manager Kevin Mizikar during his review, which was presented during their June 8 meeting.

“This is a team effort,” Mizikar told the board in response. “We work very well together. That’s something that I sought coming into this community and never take for granted.”

Selectmen gave Mizikar a rating of “exceeding expectations, exceptional and outstanding.”

Selectman John Lebeaux added that he tended to be a hard grader.

“Through all the extraordinary, unexpected challenges that came our way and how effectively Mr. Mizikar addressed them, I gave him the highest rankings that I possibly could,” Lebeaux said.

According to Chair John Samia, the review evaluated Mizikar on 11 factors: knowledge, productivity, decision making, oral and written communication, financial administration, leadership, public relations, work relationships, staff development and training, personnel practices and his goals for fiscal year 2021.

“The comments were overwhelmingly favorable under the 11 categories,” said Samia.

Samia presented the results of the review. One recurring theme of Mizikar’s evaluation was the challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“He was ahead of what needed to be done for COVID before I think we even knew COVID was out of Washington state,” said Selectman Maurice DePalo.

Samia noted several of Shrewsbury’s accomplishments over the past year under Mizikar’s helm, like the new Beal school project being able to be completed on time and under budget, the organization of Shrewsbury’s first outdoor Town Meeting and the town’s successful override.

Samia said Shrewsbury was able to maintain its AAA bond rating, which is the highest

level that S&P Global Partners assigns, “despite financial challenges caused by the pandemic and our longstanding structural deficit.”

Selectmen also praised Mizikar’s high expectations for staff, including having town departments submit their own goals. They described him as “someone

you would want to work for because of his relationship he develops with his employees and his collaborative nature.”

“There would have been a whole lot of aimless wandering over the past year without the leadership of Mr. Mizikar,” read Samia. “I’m still amazed at the forward progress that occurred despite the complete disruption

caused by the pandemic.”

Some of the selectmen noted that their ratings were off on the review, compared to what they submitted to town staff.

“To say that the work that Mr. Mizikar has done over particularly the past year that it’s been exceptional is an understatement,” DePalo said.

Sharyn Thomas embraces role as Shrewsbury’s new Town Clerk

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY - The transition to the role of Town Clerk has been seamless for former Assistant Town Clerk Sharyn Thomas.

She was appointed by the Board of Selectmen to succeed Sandra Wright, who retired as Town Clerk in February, having served for 11 years.

Thomas, 49, said that Wright did a great job of mentoring her and added that they worked closely in preparation for the transition.

Thomas boasts Shrewsbury roots Thomas grew up in Shrewsbury. She went to Shrewsbury Public Schools through eighth grade and then on to Holy Name High School in Worcester before matriculating to the University of Mass - Dartmouth.

Shrewsbury is where Thomas and her husband reside and have raised their three children, a 19-year-old son who is in

college, and two daughters - a sophomore at Shrewsbury High School and a sixth grader at Sherwood Middle School.

Experience matters for Thomas Thomas has worked for the town in several capacities. But it was in 2013 that she joined the staff in the town clerk’s office as a part-time administrative assistant.

Two years later, she became full-time, and then, in 2017, she became the assistant town

“I tried out all the desks,” she said jokingly. “I think it worked out perfectly because there are main responsibilities on each desk, so I kind of learned as I went around.”

She said that when she was named assistant town clerk, Wright had put her on the path to earn her certification to help “groom her” to eventually become Town Clerk. The certification process is a three-year program through the New England Municipal Clerks Institute.

“I was supposed to complete that in 2020, but we all know how 2020 went with COVID,” she reflected.

Thomas has found the course to be valuable as a source of networking and learning opportunities from her peers as well as support. She expects to have her certification completed in 2022.

Thomas undaunted by pandemic The past years’ experience with the pandemic obviously didn’t deter Thomas from applying for the job.

“It was pretty intense with the mail-in [voting] and the changes in legislation, but we have a good team in the office and we all work well together,” she remarked. “It has to get done, so you just buckle down, and you do it.”

She also credited the “great” group of volunteers they had who helped organize roughly 15,000 ballots for mailing and subsequent processing during recent elections.

Local Election/Town Meeting run smoothly When the Community Advocate caught up with Thomas earlier this year, she and her office were gearing up for early voting for the 2021 town election May 4 and then the Annual Town Meeting May 22.

When asked how she thought this year’s election was going to differ from last year, she said that because it was the second municipal election during COVID-19, people better understood how early voting and mail-in ballots worked.

When not at work, Thomas enjoys making stained-glass, gardening and spending family time on the cape.

“Nothing beats the beach and a book,” she said.

Meanwhile, Thomas said that the best thing about her job is that it is “a great place to work.”

“You know what’s going on in the community,” she said.

Opportunity comes thanks to singing lessons Silva lives in Westborough and is just wrapping up her seventh grade year at Gibbons Middle School in town.

She’s danced her whole life, but only started singing lessons last year through the Westborough-based Patrice Peris Voice Studios.

Studio owner Patrice Peris personally helps coach Silva and recently worked her connections to get Silva gigs not only with the Worcester Red Sox, but at Fitton Field, also in Worcester, singing the national anthem for the Worcester Bravehearts summer college baseball team.

Silva got her first shot singing in a stadium setting through that Bravehearts opportunity.

She quickly followed with her performance across town at Polar Park.

Silva’s grandmother loves baseball, she notes. She and her mother are much bigger football and hockey fans. Even so, they said they enjoyed their experience sticking around in what has been heralded as a state-ofthe-art new stadium.

“We sat down for a little bit after and watched [the game] and it was really fun,” Kelli Silva said.

Future holds promise of future opportunities Victoria Silva wants to keep singing. Entering eighth grade, she’s eyeing high school opportunities and considering attending a performing arts school.

In the meantime, she’s looking forward to getting back behind the mic and on the field.

Specifically, she’s got her sights set on Fenway Park and Gillette Stadium.

“That’s our next goal,” her mother said.

In February all residents were vaccinated, and most of our staff have received the vaccine. We continue to provide a COVID-free facility for all of our residents and staff. We are very proud of our accomplishments.

LIGHTING Add more lighting options around the room, especially around the vanity to reduce shadows and glaring. This is something that isn’t too expensive and can really highlight the positive features of a bathroom.

Mood lighting around the tub area is also increasing in popularity.

BATH & SHOWER It is not too often you hear someone complaining about a bathtub being too large, and that is because there is nothing better than coming home from a hard day’s work and relaxing in a big soothing tub. Most recently steam showers are becoming popular. You can add mood lighting, a rain shower head and a pump for aromatherapy oils. By investing in a steam shower, you can create a spa-like experience and will have your buyers imagining themselves relaxing and washing their cares away. Adding a massage element to the showerhead or one that replicates rain showers will also appeal to buyers.

UPDATE FIXTURES Not as costly as some of the other tips, changing the fixtures in a bathroom can add a great deal. From cabinet handles to faucets, the addition of brushed nickel or other polished metals are always a huge hit. And if space permits, consider adding a second sink, a popular request from buyers.

THINK GREEN The bathroom is a prime place to start employing those environmentally friendly devices. Installing fixtures that save water, such as a low-flow showerhead, a low-flow faucet aerator and a dual-flush toilet, can save thousands of gallons of water each year.

Adding energy-efficient windows is another easy option, since the size of bathroom windows are relatively small. Another fix that is both decorative and energy efficient is the addition of natural stone flooring, which helps the bathroom stay cool during the summer and warmer during the winter.

All About the Pup closure causes concern, raises questions An All About the Pup banner remained affixed to the fence of the business’ outdoor play area after it announced its closure late last month.

By Susan Gonsalves Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH – When the owners of All About the Pup announced they were suspending services as of June 1, their statement created a firestorm of concern and confusion around Westborough and online.

A community Facebook page was filled with more than 350 comments—primarily expressing support of the dog boarding facility located on Brigham Street. Calls for a petition, protests in the rotary and even a dog parade in front of Town Hall were among the suggested responses to the situation.

Owners Todd and Lily Hathaway made further comments online, explaining they had taken many costly measures to mitigate barking noise, including the installation of a large sound wall in their outdoor play yard and a variety of sound insulation solutions to reduce noise in their building.

Todd Hathaway wrote that in order to “eliminate the barking,” at the town’s request, they would need to introduce behavior techniques that the business did not support.

Despite putting “blood, sweat and tears into the issue,” it hadn’t been resolved, the owner said. He added that he hoped the business offered “excellent care and service to all the pups and their families” during its time in Westborough.

He added that they are “devastated” their efforts were not enough to stop neighbors from complaining.

During a June 8 Select Board meeting, Chair Allen Edinberg took time to talk about the matter.

He said that the board, town manager and community development director had received correspondence from several people about the business. He said people assumed the town took action resulting in the closure, which is not the case.

Edinberg explained that the business is located in an industrial zone that allows dog boarding “use by right.” As a result, All About the Pup was not subject to any special permit or public hearing process.

Because of its location, in 2016 it did go through a review design process for changes to

The Select Board chair said the owner was made aware of a relevant zoning bylaw regarding noise issues/nuisance and the fact that neighbors could possibly complain about

the noise.

The bylaw is enforced by the zoning enforcement officer, who is also the community development director, Edinberg said, and not the animal control department.

He said the bylaw means

that neighbors within 400 feet of the property have no grounds for complaint or recourse. In a business district, the radius would be 200 feet.

Edinberg acknowledged that after the town received complaints from residents, the owners spent “time, energy and money” trying to mitigate the problem—installing soundproofing, and a solid wood wall which was later repaired. The business also changed operational procedures, he said.

He added that owners were informed of a noise complaint about barking dogs in October 2020 and again in April 2021.

The April complaint came from a neighborhood located beyond the 400 feet where noise was determined to be “audible” and, therefore, in violation of the zoning bylaw.

Edinberg emphasized that the town did not recommend any action but sent a letter to the owners asking for proposed mitigation measures

and advising them of their right to appeal.

A meeting with representatives of the business followed, and officials approved a request for a 60-day extension, he said.

A follow-up meeting was pending on July 12 when officials heard about the business suspending its services.

“The town did not charge fines or take steps to alter operations,” Edinberg said. It is the town’s preference to “work to a solution rather than take punitive enforcement.”

He added that Westborough works diligently to welcome businesses, large and small, and recognizes the “sense of community” All About the Pup provided to residents and other people who work and shop in town.

Edinberg concluded that the town is saddened a better resolution couldn’t be reached, and he wished the owners the best “as they determine their path forward.”

Northborough Girl Scout Troop Bronze Award benefits Abby’s House Girl Scout Troop 64736 held fundraisers, including a 5K race to benefit Abby’s House.

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - After 180 hours of project work, the nine members of Northborough Girl Scout Troop 64736 recently completed their Bronze Award.

Through the culmination of cookie sales and a 5K fundraiser, the troop raised $1,000 to bring awareness and support to the group Abby’s House in Worcester.

Abby’s House is a non-profit organization, which provides shelter and affordable housing, as well as advocacy and support services to homeless, battered and low-income women with or without children.

The Bronze Award is the highest honor a Junior Girl Scout can earn. The girls opted to support women and children in need and, after doing research, chose Abby’s House as the recipient of their fundraising proceeds.

“The project’s objective must be to benefit the local community and/or benefit Girl Scouting as a whole in some way,” Troop Leader Meghan Soens explained of Bronze Award project qualifications.

“Each scout is expected to contribute 20 hours to the project.”

In addition to Soens, the troop is led by Leslie Homzie Campbell.

The troop is comprised of 10 and 11-year-olds from Marguerite E. Peaslee School, Lincoln Street School, Marion E. Zeh School and St. Bernadette School. Members are Alaia Phillips, AJ Soens, Clara Reade, Clara Campbell, Jane Campbell, Leona Azar, Samone Tromblay, Sarah Campbell and Yasahmin Rowe.

Soens said it has been beneficial to have girls from different elementary schools in the troop.

“It’s been nice to have a connection that is broader than the elementary school they attend,” she said.

Fundraising during a pandemic, though, had its challenges.

Soens said the Troop was one of only two that decided to sell cookies this year.

“The girls love selling cookies,” she said. “They decided to forgo prizes and chose to donate all proceeds from sales to Abby’s House.”

The troop sold 1,008 boxes of cookies and raised $700.

The event had only 20 participants, but it raised $300, and the girls were proud of the overall process.

“The project is not only about the impact it makes on the community, but about skill-building – setting goals, planning, marketing, communication,” Soens said.

The money raised, along

with items such as cleaning products, new pillows, and paper towels, will be donated directly to Abby’s House in June.

Although the Troop may have completed its project, its effort to make an impact in the community is not over.

“Six girls committed to stay on for next year as they head into middle school,” said Soens.

Northborough’s Community Fridge is ready to serve those in need

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - When kindergarteners and first graders at The Fitzgerald Community School in Northborough learned about the existence of food insecurity, they were quick to come up with a solution.

The “Friend Fridge” is a result of their hard work and responsiveness to help others. It officially opened on May 8 and is located at the Northborough Food Pantry at 37 Pierce St. Teacher Maria Ravelli has eight students in the K-1 classroom and is involved with a similar initiative in Worcester.

When she explained it to the class, they were on board to make it happen in Northborough.

The concept is “take what

you need, give what you can.”

The fridge aims to build community and fill the gaps between food security and equity.

“There are a lot of people who don’t have food in the world and don’t have money to buy like we do,” said first-grade student Lillia El-Gamal. “All people deserve food even if they don’t have money.”

Community fridge works as collaborative effort The fridge is available 24/7, and community members are encouraged to bring donations. Donations needed include whole foods, produce, breads, dairy and frozen items.

“Donate food that you would feed your family,” said Ravelli.

The class also wanted to make sure that masks and hand sanitizer were available for people using the community fridge to keep everyone safe during COVID-19.

The Fitzgerald School has a

total of 50 students, which enables small class sizes. Themed project-based learning is used so students can apply skills and learn skills with hands-on projects.

“How can we impact change in the community,” Ravelli said of the focus. “The students were inspired to think

of vulnerable people in the community.”

Students worked on everything from fundraising, to logo design, to painting to building an enclosure for the fridge.

Fundraisers included a large yard sale and the sale of bookmarks.

Ravelli said students used math skills for counting donations and taking measurements. They learned how to use power tools and wrote letters to form partnerships with area restaurants, farms and bakeries for donations.

It is a self-sustaining community effort, she said.

Students, families and volunteers outside of school will help maintain the community fridge, dropping off donations and sanitizing it.

Southborough Post Office unveils new stamps SOUTHBOROUGH - The Southborough United States Post Office celebrated a new set of stamps with one of the small businesses those stamps were designed to honor, last month.

Gathering at NY Bagel Factory on Turnpike Road, Postmaster Ryan DiEoreo and others unveiled a set of new “espresso stamps.”

Featuring illustrations of espresso drinks that pay homage to the Art Deco-style advertising of the 1920s and ‘30s, these stamps aim to celebrate small coffee shops, baristas and the drinks they craft.

“With the growing popularity of artisanal coffee shops...specialty coffee is better than it has ever been,” read a national press release from the USPS. Booklets of the Postal Service’s espresso stamps may be purchased online at https://www.usps.com/.

As he and his team settle in, owner and founder Kevin Flaherty is continuing long running community engagement efforts while praising the thriving business community that has quickly embraced him.

“Hudson is quite a community,” Flaherty said in a recent interview. “I’m very impressed by it.”

Flaherty lives in Shrewsbury and has long operated his physical therapy practice out of its primary location in Northborough.

Bolton and Berlin, though, Flaherty set his sights on a second office. He soon settled on a space within Hudson’s Landing at Hudson Mills building just steps from Main Street.

“We’re already busy in that office,” Flaherty said.

With business booming in both Hudson and Northborough, Flaherty has found time and resources to maintain a variety of community outreach projects and charity initiatives.

His business annually provides scholarships to high school seniors in Hudson, Algonquin and Shrewsbury.

They support area sports and fitness activities via donations and sponsorships for Northborough and Shrewsbury Little League, the Northboro Summer Concert Series, the Algonquin and the Shrewsbury High

like we’re a member of the community as well as giving back to the community,” Flaherty said.

A former little league coach himself, Flaherty values youth sports opportunities and is grateful to help organizations that often rely heavily on such outside donations.

“I want to support those programs,” he said.

Meanwhile, with scholarships, he’s regularly blown away by the content on applications.

“The things that these kids are doing all the time it’s truly amazing,” Flaherty said.

Those connections bear added importance, Flaherty noted.

As he supports students on their post-secondary school journeys, he also appreciates opportunities to connect with young student athletes as patients.

“I love working with kids and getting them through a problem or an issue that allows them to be able to return to do the things that they want and love to do,” he said.

Whether they’re former patients, scholarship recipients, or students just interacting with his business for the first time, Flaherty describes a mutually beneficial situation in the form of internship opportunities.

“It’s a win-win for everyone,” he said. “We get a little bit of help from the students, the students get some experience and the patients really enjoy having them around too.”

These days, Flaherty is actually in need of even more help.

He has openings in his internship program as a batch of students are set to go back to

PT school in the fall. Likewise, his surge of patients in Hudson has him operating with a wait list. New staff are the solution to that challenge.

“That’s something we don’t like,” Flaherty said of the waitlist. “We don’t want people to have to wait too long to be seen.

We want to get people seen as soon as we can.”

Flaherty is hiring, looking for the types of people who have already helped elevate his business as a go-to source of physical therapy treatment in the region.

He said, his crew of office staff, his physical therapists, and any new hires he brings on operate as a well-run professional sports team.

“My success in my company is strictly because I have been able to hire some amazing people,” he said. “We’re always looking for the best and brightest people to join our staff, just like the great sports teams of New England do.”

board used Bock’s self-assessment, their own observations, staff surveys, parent/student emails, district surveys and two Westborough TV forums to help generate the evaluation.

The superintendent was rated individually by members as exemplary, proficient, needs improvement and unsatisfactory in several categories. Vincent then combined all the information into the overall rating.

Several board members told Bock that they didn’t know how they would have survived the difficult year dealing with COVID-19 without her leadership.

Vincent praised her for careful budgeting, saying she kept school facilities wellmaintained and built strong relationships with other town leaders.

She noted that Bock is wellaware through stakeholder feedback that her communication was regarded as lacking at times. She added that Bock needs to work on rebuilding relationships with faculty and families.

Other board members echoed her comments.

Sara Dullea went on to praise the superintendent for helping to provide a safe environment for students.

She called her decision-making “confident, steady and thoughtful.” She added that looking to the future, she’d like the district to maintain some of the creativity and innovation that worked well for students, including those

in remote learning.

“I don’t think it was a lost year for anyone,” Dullea said.

“The resiliency and tenacity of our students was evident.

There were countless learning moments happening all the time…that our students can carry forward into the future.”

Member Radhu Nandan noted that lack of communication sometimes leads to people talking amongst themselves and drawing their own conclusions—a situation to avoid in the future.

He said there could never be enough communication.

That being said, he also added, “Sometimes, we [in the district] do cater to screamers a lot.”

Nandan noted that a better strategy is to keep the whole community’s interest in mind rather than focusing on “who screams the loudest.”

“We’re bending a bit too much, whether they are wrong or right,” he said.

Above all, though, the superintendent kept students and faculty “safe,” according to member Lisa Edinberg, making sure the schools opened when they did and having the foresight to purchase enough personal protective equipment (PPE) early on, for example.

Talking about communication issues, Edinberg noted that it was a challenging year and said teachers and the leadership had to go “above and beyond 24/7” with more intensity than ever.

“I’m so proud you are our superintendent,” Edinberg

said.

School Committee Vice Chair Stephen Doret said he is a “realist” who is well aware how difficult Bock’s job was to accomplish, particularly this year.

He said that she was working under “edicts that were not necessarily common sense,” all the while running a $55-$60 million operation, dealing with 20,000 parents and kids and overseeing 750 employees.

“I don’t know how you could be [seen as] less than exemplary,” Doret said.

He added that students are moving forward with their lives and may be stronger as a result of what they experienced during COVID-19.

Bock once again gave credit to teachers, other administrators and staff.

“The team is pretty amazing,” she said.

She added that she feels good about how they all managed the tough times, pointing out that the pandemic was actually a year and a half in duration.

The superintendent said that she acknowledges it could be “stressful” for committee members to give her an exemplary rating when some members of the public disagree.

Vincent assured her they all stand by their evaluation.

The school committee does not meet again until Monday, August 30, at 6 p.m. If an emergency meeting must be called, it will be posted and shared.

Southborough kindergartener wins raffle, ride with fire department

SOUTHBOROUGH - Finn School kindergartener, Tessa, got a unique ride to school June 10 thanks to the Southborough Fire Department.

Tessa, who was identified in a Facebook post by only her first name, won a raffle through a town reading program last month. This gave her the honor of a ride to school from Fire Chief Steven Achilles in his department command vehicle.

SHREWSBURY - Grade 8 students at Shrewsbury’s Oak Middle School have been celebrating the end of middle school with a series of ceremonies this month.

Kicking off on June 9, events have run on June 10, 11, 14 and 17.

They’ve individually honored students on Oak Middle School’s separate student “teams.”

“While each team has its own personality and style, the Celebrations reflect this, with each one being just a little unique,” administrators wrote in a newsletter update to the community before events kicked off.

Public hearing on Shrewsbury mascot June 16

Committee discusses history, future of mascot Last fall, a Shrewsbury High School student submitted a petition requesting that the Colonial mascot be changed.

Shrewsbury then received a counter-petition requesting that the mascot not be changed.

When the School Committee received the petitions, it charged Superintendent Joseph Sawyer to form the committee, which would investigate the origins of the mascot and its historical context, solicit viewpoints and make a recommendation.

According to the committee’s report, Shrewsbury began using the mascot in the 1940s

when the high school was located at the current Beal Early Childhood Center.

Before the 1940s, yearbooks show that the high school teams’ nicknames included the “Indians” and “Wearers of the S.’” A Worcester Telegram & Gazette cartoonist, Al Banx, gave Shrewsbury the Colonials nickname, and some believe it’s referring to the town’s colonial history. The “Colonial” was incorporated into the school seal in the 1950s, and a 1965 student guidebook connected the nickname to General Artemas Ward.

The committee was made up of high school students, staff, alumni and parents. They met nine times over the year.

The committee reviewed scholarly articles about settler colonialism and spoke to a college professor. The petitioners were invited to speak, but only those proposing to change the mascot actually spoke.

SHREWSBURY - An ad hoc group tasked to study Shrewsbury High School’s (SHS) mascot, the Colonial, did not reach a consensus on whether Shrewsbury Public Schools should keep or change its mascot.

However, according to a presentation to the School Committee June 9, a majority of the 31-person committee favored changing the mascot.

Specifically, 17 people favored changing it, 12 wished to keep it and two did not make a choice. During the presentation, SHS Principal Todd Bazydlo noted that of the 12 people who favored keeping the mascot, nine members said they believed it should be updated to be more inclusive.

The administrators presented the ad hoc committee’s report, which is now published on the district’s website, and the results of a ThoughtExchange community survey.

Shrewsbury isn’t the first

local community to recently consider changing its high school mascot. In April, the Northborough-Southborough Regional School Committee voted to retire Algonquin’s mascot, the Tomahawk.

Now, a public hearing was held on June 16. The public was invited to attend in person.

Community provides feedback The committee also sought out community feedback, specifically using the ThoughtExchange website in which residents voice their views but also rate other people’s opinions.

According to ThoughtExchange CEO Dave MacLeod, 2,854 people participated and shared 3,543 thoughts.

A total of 1,939 thoughts advocated keeping the mascot.

MacLeod said some of the toprated opinions to keep it, meanwhile, had themes of history, the cost to change the mascot and argued that it wasn’t offensive.

According to MacLeod’s presentation, 726 people provided thoughts to change the mascot, saying it wasn’t inclusive and was outdated.

One person, Earl Ethier, spoke during the School Committee meeting, advocating to keep the mascot.

“It may be symbolic and politically correct to change our mascot name in these current times, but that doesn’t really advance solving critical social issues in a significant way,” Ethier said.

He asked that the committee base its decision on the merits of the presented arguments “as opposed to making decisions that will be perceived as only politically correct” and move beyond “cancel culture,” which he said, “denigrates major historical figures and erases or revises history.”

Bose inventor finds his Viking muse ated throughout Scandinavia and Iceland from about 800 to 1100AD, the Vikings passed on engaging stories, engineered ships and tools for warfare, and conducted voyages for trade, exploration and piracy. Dr. Short’s fascination with the age was cemented when he attended a summer program in Iceland.

By Jane Keller Gordon Contributing Writer SOUTHBOROUGH – Dr. William R. Short, who lives in Southborough, describes himself as a “Viking nerd” in spite of devoting much of his life to Bose Corporation.

Mentored by the late Dr. Amar G. Bose while earning his B.S., M.S. and Sc.D. in electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dr. Short went on to become a Bose Fellow, earning many U.S. and foreign patents.

In 1987, he and Dr. Bose received the Inventor of the Year Award for the Bose Acoustic Wave® music system and Bose Wave® Radio, for which they share the patents. For the past 15 years, Dr. Short has pursued his other passion, full-time.

“Along with others, I am driven to understand how the Vikings fought and how they lived,” Dr. Short said. “Their culture was strange and twisted, and hard for us moderns to accept. Everything revolved around violence, including their code of conduct, code of law, and religious beliefs. But violence only took place under the right circumstances.”

According to Dr. Short, the Vikings’ poetry speaks of “orðstírr,” which he translates to the word “glory.”

“The only thing that survives your death is what people say about you… And the Vikings believed that the date of their death was preordained, so it was okay to take risks,” said Dr. Short.

In the mid-1990s, Dr. Short’s passion for the Vikings was ignited when he began reading their sagas and poems. Situ-

Dr. Short originally ran Hurstwic as a fight school and research laboratory at the Higgin’s Armory in Worcester. When the museum closed, Dr. Short leased space in Millbury, Mass.

With scientific experiments at his core, using Hurstwic as his base, Dr. Short set out to build a core of trained fighters to conduct experiments about Viking warfare.

He established a group of 8 to 10 people who met three times a week to replicate the brutal, aggressive moves of the Viking warriors. They reverseengineered Viking weapons and even Viking ships. From time to time, Hurstwic held open training sessions for a larger group of trainees.

Dr. Short and his colleagues conducted many data-driven experiments, creating detailed graphs and plots.

“We broke a million shields trying to figure out how they work,” said Dr. Short.

In one case, the group investigated the veracity of a Viking saga in which a powerful archer defended his home with two locks of his wife’s hair after his string broke.

“We tried it, and it worked,” said Dr. Short, with a bit of a twinkle in his eyes.

New comprehensive book Dr. Short has produced films and training series, lectured, and published several books on the Vikings. He has traveled to Iceland dozens of times.

Now, on Thursday, July 15, 2021, he and Icelandic martial

arts instructor and co-author Reynir Óskarson will publish a 512-page book, “Men of Terror: A Comprehensive Analysis of Viking Combat.”

The book started out as a set of descriptions, notes, graphs,

tables and plots. During COVID-19, Dr. Short reached out to Óskarson and proposed that they write a comprehensive book on the subject, using scientific methods to understand how the Vikings fought and

lived. “We’re very excited about this book,” said Dr. Short.

COMMUNITY SPORTS Northborough middle school baseball team fundraises for trip to Fenway Park

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor NORTHBOROUGH - Over a dozen middle school aged Northborough baseball players headed to Fenway Park June 12 thanks in part to a wildly successful car wash fundraiser.

As his team enjoyed a day watching the Red Sox face the Toronto Blue Jays, Coach Eric Mayo noted that this trip was more than met the eye.

“It’s come together really well,” he recently told the Community Advocate.

Mayo, alongside fellow coaches Tim Citro and Johnathan Freve watched their team struggle at times under the weight of COVID-19 this spring.

Particularly, students were unable to take field trips due to the coronavirus and the threat it posed.

baseball program does not always play.

Mayo’s second cousin is Red Sox President and CEO Sam Kennedy. So, Mayo got in contact and asked if the Red Sox would help bring Northborough’s middle school team to Boston.

“Sam said ‘absolutely,’” Mayo recalled.

As the Red Sox paid for students’ game tickets, Mayo anticipated they would have been able to also fund transportation and other costs associated with the trip.

That wouldn’t be necessary,

though, as Northborough players and community members turned out for a car wash fundraiser on June 5.

“I thought it’d be a good opportunity for the kids to put in a little elbow grease,” Mayo said.

That fundraiser raked in

over $1,500. Some of the money paid for transportation and concessions at Fenway. The rest went to the Red Sox’ cancer research and patient care charity, the Jimmy Fund.

“This was an easy opportunity and easy lift for us to make a statement to the Red Sox thanking them for the opportunity,” Mayo said of the decision to donate to the Jimmy Fund.

This major league experience ended the 2021 baseball season with a bang that few players or coaches expected even weeks earlier as the pandemic lingered.

Proud of what the team had done, Coach Citro offered a simple reflection on the year that’s been.

“Watching them come together as a team on the field this season has been fun to watch; seeing them come together off the diamond as friends is even better,” he said.

REGION - Another week of spring sports action last week saw the start of the Central Massachusetts Athletic Director’s Association postseason tournament. Regional schools competed in the first round, quarterfinals, and semifinals with their championship games on the horizon.

St. John’s and Algonquin qualified for the finals in boys tennis in their respective divisions, while Westborough beat Shrewsbury in girls tennis to qualify for the Division 1 finals.

COMMUNITY SERVICE Westborough nurse honored by Boston Globe WESTBOROUGH - Nurse Beth Terhune of Westborough was recognized in the Boston Globe’s annual “Salute to Nurses” section for her exemplary work at Hebrew SeniorLife’s Hospice and Palliative Care in Dedham.

Terhune was nominated by her colleague Emily Palmer, a fellow certified nurse working as the Clinical Director of Hospice and Palliative Care at Hebrew SeniorLife.

“Salute to Nurses; recognizes nurses whose dedication and caring have saved lives, soothed fears, and eased the pain of countless patients and their families,” read a press release defining the honor.

“Beth is not only an excellent nurse practitioner who practices evidence-based pal-

Shrewsbury Boy Scouts help Westborough Food Pantry WESTBOROUGH - Boy Scout Troop 4 from Ray Stone Post in Shrewsbury has recently focused its attention on a series of service projects at the Westborough Food Pantry.

Since January, scouts have organized boxes of thousands of pounds of food and toiletries. They have also helped move large boxes to make room for a pantry repainting project.

“These projects instill in the scouts to donate their time and work together for a good cause,” Scout Service Coordinator David Lowy said of the recent work.

As COVID-19 restrictions have lifted, the scouts of Troop 4 have enjoyed more time together.

They held a fishing derby on May 13. Later this month,

they’ll be celebrating the elevation of five troop members to the prestigious Eagle Scout rank via a court of honor ceremony.

There have, likewise, been more opportunities for group community service efforts that had been limited and, in some cases, postponed due to the virus’s impacts in earlier months.

“Many hands make light work!” Lowy remarked on the guiding principle of service work in general.
