REGION — Law enforcement will be active throughout the boating season on Lake Quinsigamond thanks to a new task force.

The Lake Quinsigamond Task Force will be made up of Shrewsbury, Worcester, Massachusetts Environmental Police and Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation law enforcement personnel and vehicles.

Largely dodging rainstorms in favor of scalding heat, the ceremonies simultaneously marked milestones for entire communities.

Massachusetts lifted the majority of its COVID-19 restrictions late last month. The first weekend following that news, though, remained largely locked down as rain dampened Memorial Day celebrations that had already been planned with earlier restrictions in mind.

That left graduations as some of the first local mass gatherings without masks in over a year.

“We’ve been proactive about this in Shrewsbury, engaging in voluntary testing since the fall of 2019,” said Shrewsbury’s Water and Sewer Superintendent Dan Rowley during a May 11 Board of Selectmen meeting.

PFAS is short for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. A number of items have these compounds in them, like firefighting foam and non-stick cookware, Rowley said.

fants. They can also impact the thyroid, liver, kidneys, immune system and certain hormones.

Rowley said the most recent PFAS detection level in Shrewsbury in April was 15.5 nanograms per liter (ng/l).

“It’s like having a trillion dollars in the bank and taking $20 out,” Rowley said in an interview with the Community Advocate, contextualizing the

“We had a barrel of fluoride at each well and a little pump, and you pumped the fluoride into water from each individual well,” Fox said.

In those days, Fox had a onepage list from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection of samples to test for. That list is now 11 pages.

Officials take early action to take local PFAS measurements As part of its ever-expanding water quality monitoring, Shrewsbury actually tested for PFAS under the third Unregulated Contaminant Monitoring Rule in 2015.

At that time, PFAS weren’t detected, Rowley said. Since then, though, the testing has improved to the point where PFAS are now being tested at a parts per trillion scale.

In 2019, MassDEP reached

out to a number of communities, including Shrewsbury, to see whether they would voluntarily test their water for PFAS. Shrewsbury ended up being one of 21 participating communities, Rowley said.

Fox said that, especially after discovering the contaminant hexavalent chromium in their water, the town decided to participate because it wanted to know in advance if there was something in the water that could be potentially harmful.

“It’s one of those things that it’s a question that you know could have ramifications, but on the flip side, we wanted to be prepared, knowing if this was found in a lot of water systems, equipment, people to do piloting wouldn’t be available,” Rowley said.

Last October, MassDEP released a maximum contaminant level of 20 ng/l for the sum of six compounds under the umbrella PFAS categorization.

Because the town’s levels were above 10 ng/l, but lower than 20 ng/l, Shrewsbury is required to test its treated water every month.

Now there are regulations that require water systems to test for PFAS, and Shrewsbury would have already been obligated to have tested its system

by April 1, Rowley said.

“I really think we’ve shifted the management of our water system from really kind of reactive to proactive,” Rowley said.

abernet Sauvignon is one of the most widely planted red wine grapes in the world. Shrewsbury was approved

by MassDEP to conduct this pilot study in March, and Rowley estimated that the study would take about six months.

The pilot study is being housed in Shrewsbury’s Home Farm Treatment Plant on Main Street, which was built in 2018 to treat manganese in the town’s water. All of the water in the town is pumped through the plant.

Rowley explained that the water will be filtered through the aforementioned pipes, which will collect samples.

The samples will be taken at different points in the filtration process, and at the end, the town will be able to tell what mechanisms are most effective at filtering out PFAS chemicals.

With that information in hand, an analysis of the operating cost and the cost of ongoing maintenance will be conducted.

The treatment plant may have to expand, ideally on its same site, to build the infrastructure to filter out the PFAS, Rowley explained.

Board considers pursuing adoption of Community Preservation Act Request would go on warrant, ballot for voters’ decision

By Susan Gonsalves Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - Westborough has the opportunity to generate funds for projects related to open space, historic preservation, affordable housing development and outdoor recreation. To do that, it could follow the lead of neighboring towns and adopt the Community Preservation Act (CPA), said CPA Exploratory Committee chair Jenn Doherty.

Doherty, who also chairs the Historical Commission, gave a presentation about the state law passed in 2000 during the Select Board’s May 25 meeting.

The Act allows communities to raise money in order to create a dedicated fund to be used for certain purposes. The state provides matching funds yearly through fees it collects from the Registry of Deeds.

trust fund even if they haven’t adopted CPA. Therefore, by not adopting the CPA, residents are currently not getting the benefits that are possible from it, she emphasized.

“Any time you buy or sell property or refinance a mortgage, you’re paying into this fund that goes to other communities,” Doherty said.

To date, 187 cities and towns in Massachusetts have adopted the CPA. Under the Act, affordable housing, open space/recreation and historic preservation ef-

forts must each get 10 percent of a community’s funds. Five percent of the money can pay for administrative costs, while the remaining 65 percent can be used as the community desires within the three categories.

The money is raised through a surcharge applied to the amount property owners pay in taxes. The surcharge is not calculated relative to the valuation of a property.

In Westborough, the Exploratory Committee looked at a formula whereby it would add $50 (or less) to the average

single-family tax bill using a .5 percent level charge.

Westborough’s average valuation is $536,264. The law allows communities to use an exemption and subtract $100,000 from that total. Another exemption eliminates the surcharge for low-income taxpayers and seniors.

With those conditions, an average tax bill of $8,088 would increase by $40.

Cities and towns can set the surcharge rate anywhere up to three percent. Communities at that three percent level receive more money from the state in matching funds, Doherty said.

With a .5 percent surcharge, Westborough would generate $324,812 from all classes of property.

The corresponding fiscal year (FY) 2021 state match would total $93,048.

Doherty reviewed data from neighboring towns and showed how much money they gener-

ated with the CPA fund and state matches over the years.

Grafton adopted the Act in 2002 and with a 1.5 percent surcharge, had revenues totaling $7,789,285 to date.

Northborough started in 2001 with a 1.5 percent rate and totaled $9,511,707.

Southborough began in 2003 at one percent and generated $6,542,924.

Shrewsbury adopted the Act last year with no financial information yet.

“Adopting CPA is really an opportunity to invest in Westborough’s future,” Doherty said.

The process works by the Select Board deciding on a surcharge percentage. From there, the item would be put on a Town Meeting warrant where it must be passed by a majority. Then, the matter would be placed on the next municipal or state election ballot. If the Select Board | 5

Southborough resident calls for energy sustainability committee

By Sara Brown Contributing Writer SOUTHBOROUGH - Town resident Karen Wheeler wants to bring an energy sustainability committee to Southborough.

During a May 4 Board of Selectmen meeting, Wheeler presented her idea to the board.

“I am concerned about our planet,” she said. “I am worried about the cost of humanity if we don’t get the increase in climate under control.”

Wheeler envisions the committee researching, advising and advocating sustainability options for the town in terms of long-term projects.

She also hopes the potential committee will help apply for federal grants. She believes there will be many grant opportunities to pursue in the coming years, thanks in part

Wheeler said she would be in favor of re-starting the now defunct technology and recycling committee if selectmen were more favorable to that option.

Director of Facilities John Parent said he liked the idea of the committee but has some hesitations.

“There are a lot of deadlines and time schedules, and when you put in a committee in the

mix, you can start missing deadlines,” he warned.

Parent said the town is currently in the process of taking big steps to become more “green.” But, he added, it could use help with outreach to residents. He suggested Wheeler could let residents know what the town is doing, as well as how they can make choices in their own life to be more environmentally conscious.

majority of Westborough voters approved that vote, the town would establish a committee to manage the fund.

That committee would be comprised of representatives from the Planning Board, Conservation Commission, Historical Commission, Historical Association, and Board of Park Commissioners (possibly Open Space in Westborough’s case). Four additional at-large members could be added to the committee.

Annually, it would be that group’s charge to review applications for projects and develop a list of recommendations to present to Town Meeting.

Doherty said if the town adopted the CPA earlier, it could have funded things like the rehabilitation of Town Hall and the Forbes Building; construction of the Hennessy Cricket Pitch and pickleball courts; purchase of the state hospital and Despres properties; and construction of town-owned affordable housing at Rogers Road, among other projects.

Going forward, sample projects could include construction of affordable housing in vacant and underutilized buildings, rehabilitation of the Harvey building, repairs to historic gravestones, an updated inventory of historical resources and more.

The Exploratory Committee is looking at a timetable of presenting the issue at the 2022 spring Town Meeting and then placing a question on the fall state election ballot.

“The more public input, comment and understanding, the better,” said Select Board Chair Allen Edinberg.

Vice Chair Ian Johnson noted that hearing opinions from residents in advance of Town Meeting during public hearings is advantageous.

St. Rose of Lima Parish, located at 244 West Main St., Northborough, will be hosting its annual electronic recycling event on Saturday, June 12, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The fundraiser event will benefit the church’s youth programs and will be held rain or shine.

A small cash fee, ranging from $10-$25 based on item and size, will be required. The recycling company Data Recycling New England will be assisting.

“A lot of families were disappointed,” said Lavoie. “I think students build a closer connection with their faith and their community through these opportunities.”

In the meantime, he is hoping to finalize plans to partner with St. Gabriel the Archangel Parish in Upton to offer an alternate way for students to experience service this summer. Students would support various local organizations and efforts in lieu of week-long, overnight trips.

While it is uncertain how the group will move forward in the fall, continuing youth programming remains a priority. Specific plans will be determined as current Pastor Rev. Jim Houston retires in July after 30 years of service at St. Rose and a new pastor accepts the role.

With COVID restrictions lifted, Shrewsbury Town Hall reopens Downtown Shrewsbury bustles amid its continuing reopening after over a year of COVID-19 restrictions.

By Laura Hayes Contributing Writer SHREWSBURY - With COVID-19 restrictions loosening across Massachusetts, Shrewsbury Town Hall officially reopened to the public on June 1.

Additionally, indoor activities at the Shrewsbury Senior Center will be returning in June, and the Shrewsbury Public Library patrons won’t be required to make an appointment.

During a May 25 Board of Selectmen meeting, Assistant Town Manager Kristen Las said the town had been anticipating reopening in August.

However, Gov. Charlie Baker announced that effective May 29, Massachusetts’ mask order was rescinded except for certain circumstances like on public transportation and in healthcare facilities.

As part of the lifted restrictions, Las said that this means gathering limits have been rescinded and capacity can return to 100 percent. How-

ever, individual businesses or departments may opt to still have restrictions.

According to Las, 64 percent of residents have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and 49 percent are fully vaccinated.

Las said there’s been a “great decrease” in the number of COVID-19 cases in Shrewsbury.

“It’s good to see that all that information and data breaking the way that it is,” said Board of Selectmen Chair John Samia.

Tow n Manager Kev in Mizikar recognized Las during the meeting, particularly for her “leadership in responding to the pandemic,” he said.

“She’s had the read on this since day one and has done a really good job helping us navigate this complicated time,” Mizikar said.

Last year, selectmen declared a state of emergency due to the pandemic. As of press time, that declaration was still in effect.

Las said Shrewsbury staff are still determining what that means for town operations, including the Open Meeting Law and outdoor dining.

Gov. Baker has filed legislation that extends measures allowing public bodies like the selectmen to meet remotely and also extends special permits for restaurants to offer outdoor dining.

NORTHBOROUGH — Loved ones lined the streets of Northborough with American flags on Memorial Day in memory of Army Specialist Brian K. Arsenault.

The 28-year-old Northborough native was killed in action on Sept. 4, 2014, in Ghazni, Afghanistan while serving with the Company B, 1st Battalion 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division.

Arsenault received a number of honors including the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Commendation Medal, Combat Infantry Badge, National Service Medal and the Afghanistan Service Medal.

Before he was assigned to his unit in 2012, Arsenault completed his U.S. Army Basic Training and Infantry School at Fort Benning in Georgia before also graduating from the Airborne School.

Northborough Planning Board denies Steris Corp. permit request

By Sara Brown Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - The Planning Board voted against medical company Steris Corp.’s request for a Special Permit per Groundwater Protection Overlay District, June 1.

Steris, which offers contract serialization and testing services to medical device companies, wanted to construct a 26,000-square-foot addition at its 425 Whitney St. property.

It was looking to expand its facility on Whitney Street and first filed this motion back in August 2019. The construction period was expected to last 12 to 18 months.

The board was unanimous in its decision.

Steris’ want to have a concrete plant on site during the construction phase of this project was one of the many things that worried the board about the proposal.

Steris explained that it sought the concrete plant on site to have better control of the quality of the concrete it would be working with. Ideally, crews would start using the concrete machine at three o’clock in the morning since they would want to maximize the number of hours in a day with cooler temperatures because that further helps preserve the quality of concrete.

However, representatives said they were amenable to

starting at 7 a.m. per requests from the Planning Board.

Still, the Planning Board remained unsure about how many trucks would need to come in and out of the concrete plant.

“I think it’s going to be upsetting for the neighbors that live there,” said board member Anthony Ziton during the June 1 meeting.

When that election passed with no changes to the Planning Board’s makeup, those delays never happened.

The Planning Board reconvened on May 18 and made one final continuance of this discussion to its June 1 meeting, where it made this decision.

Deliberation over Steris’ permit request has continued over several hours at recent Planning Board meetings. There were multiple continuances.

Developers propose 400,000-square-foot warehouse near Shrewsbury border

SHREWSBURY - A developer wants to build a nearly 400,000-square-foot distribution facility just across the Shrewsbury border in Boylston.

The facility would be located next to FedEx on Pine Hill Drive. The plans went before the Boylston Planning Board and Conservation Commission on May 17 after drawing some attention from Shrewsbury residents in recent weeks.

The project is being developed by the Boston-based NorthBridge Partners, which is also developing a warehouse and office campus site at Centech Park North in Shrewsbury.

“It’s a great location for a business that relies on transportation systems,” said Larry Beals of the engineering firm Beals Associates Inc. During his presentation to the Planning Board, Beals said NorthBridge does not have a definite tenant for the site.

NorthBridge details plans for development The site is about 60 acres and located within Boylston’s flexible business development district. Beals noted that some of the uses allowed by a special permit included distribution centers and warehouses.

NorthBridge is proposing a 396,375 square-foot distribution facility with two office spaces totaling 10,250 square feet.

Drivers would enter the site off a current cul-de-sac on Pine Hill Drive. They would then turn into one of the parking lots.

NorthBridge is proposing a total of 427 parking spaces.

Loading docks would be constructed on the north and south sides of the building. Any emergency vehicles would be able to drive around the entire facility.

NorthBridge is anticipating a total of 148 new daily trips during the week.

Beals estimated that 70 percent of the traffic from the site would use Interstate 290. He

said that traffic would use Pine Hill, turn right onto Shrewsbury Street, and then enter Interstate 290.

Development navigates wetland plans According to NorthBridge’s plans submitted to Boylston, there are wetlands throughout the site, including near the proposed entrance.

Beals said they examined how the nearby FedEx facility crossed the water and found

that they were using an open bottom culvert. NorthBridge plans to use a similar approach.

In some places where NorthBridge wants to fill in the wetlands, Beals proposed replicating those wetlands in other places on its site.

Developers eye next steps NorthBridge hopes to start construction on the site shortly after it receives approval from the Conservation Commission and Planning Board.

With construction estimated to take about nine months, the project may be done in mid2022.

The plans will come back to the Planning Board for a hearing on Tuesday, June 15, and they will go back to the Conservation Commission on Monday, June 21.

Beals said this will allow the developers to sync the plans and come back with a set of plans that make both boards happy.

Shrewsbury asks to share Worcester’s public safety radio frequencies A radio site will be built at the fire station on Centech Boulevard as part of the project.

SHREWSBURY - Shrewsbury is interested in using Worcester’s public safety radio frequency.

Trying to make that possible, Shrewsbury firefighter and lead technical support on public safety radios Joseph Milosz presented an intermunicipal agreement between the town and Worcester during the May 11 Board of Selectmen meeting, which was unanimously approved.

“Part of the challenge of the radio world unfortunately right now is frequencies are very regulated by the FCC [Federal Communications Commission],” Milosz said.

Between cellphones and 5G rollout, it’s not easy to get a new radio frequency, he said.

“The best way to go forward was to take and add on to the City of Worcester’s system,” Mizlosz explained. “…It’s using what’s already built into the city, which is new.”

He said Worcester’s system was built five years ago.

To add on to the Worcester

system, Milosz said two radio sites need to be added in Shrewsbury on the Masonic Hill and at the fire station on Centech Boulevard.

However, before the town can do that, it needs to enter into an intermunicipal agreement with Worcester.

Worcester has 12 frequencies licensed to the city by the FCC. The agreement would allow those frequencies to be shared

by Shrewsbury, Milosz said.

“Both sides gain better coverage for each of their geographical areas with the way the system is set up,” Milosz said.

While it would cost money to build the two radio sites, Milosz said there would be no fee to share the frequencies. All maintenance and repairs to the Shrewsbury site and equipment would be paid for by the town.

The radio equipment approved during the September Town Meeting will be owned

by Shrewsbury. Milosz said Motorola is finalizing their proposal for Shrewsbury for the equipment and subscriber radios.

The intermunicipal agreement will now go back to Worcester for City Council approval.

If approved, this agreement will let Shrewsbury use the already-existing system by July 1, Milosz said. He estimated that construction will begin on the Shrewsbury sites by late fall or early winter.

Centech developer wants to keep barn on Allen property

By Laura Hayes Contributing Writer SHREWSBURY - The potential developers of the Centech Park North property may be able to preserve some of its historic features, including a barn and pond, they told the Shrewsbury Planning Board on June 3.

Todd Morey, Vice President of the engineering firm Beals Associates, told the board that a descendent of the Allen Property reached out to him and provided historical information.

The Allen Property was farmland established in 1725 by the local Allen family. The Town of Shrewsbury then purchased the land in 2002.

A developer, NorthBridge Partners, is proposing to build a campus on the Centech Park North site that includes two

potential warehouses and an office building.

There are three buildings on the property, including a metal building, which Morey said will be demolished, and a barn, which Morey said the descendant’s grandfather restored and used to hold square dances and community events.

Morey said his team could change some of their plans and save the barn. He suggested that the barn could be carved out from the parcel.

“It’s land that we don’t need,” he said. “We’ve talked since day one about how there’s tremendous opportunity to preserve open space and land on this site.”

about 195,000 square feet with a new bump out along a loading dock.

Morey said the bump out will “completely” screen the trucks while they’re at the loading dock.

“So, when a truck backs in here, it’s behind a building,” Morey said.

Additionally, NorthBridge wants to add parking on the west side of the building.

Resident Aaron Blank praised the new bump out, but expressed concern about noise and light pollution from the site.

“This project, bottom line, is going to have adverse effect on our quality of life and ultimately on our property values as well,” Blank said.

Morey said they would examine the difference in elevation between the building and nearby houses as well as the vegetation.

NorthBridge’s plan will be back before the Planning Board on Thursday, June 17 at 7 p.m.

That meeting will specifically discuss traffic and will be held in person.

Shrewsbury schools examining student, staff diversity and equity

Group conducts equity audit In 2020, the Assabet Valley Collaborative conducted an equity audit, which assessed Shrewsbury’s diversity, equity and inclusion.

In addition to gathering data, the auditors conducted site visits at the schools and talked with families, staff and students.

The audit reached a number of conclusions, including recommending that Shrewsbury review its discipline data and access to upper-level classes and exams.

That was one question raised by district administrators in a May 26 presentation to the School Committee on diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

Committee Chair Jon Wensky said the report indicated that the district is moving forward in its work.

“This is evolving over time.

It’s not going to yield immediate results right away, but certainly a work in progress,” Wensky said.

Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Amy Clouter said there was a “gap” between Shrewsbury’s graduate portrait and students’ experiences.

Clouter outlined a number of steps the district has taken since its strategic plan was approved in 2018, including professional development, hiring consultants to examine student data and programs, and conducting an equity audit.

Clouter said a consultant analyzed Shrewsbury’s MCAS scores from 2017-2019, examining how racial subgroups performed on the test.

According to Clouter’s presentation, the students’ combined MCAS averages have trended up over the three years.

“While we still see a gap, we’ve been doing better in these past three years,” Clouter said.

Discussion spotlights staff diversity Executive Director of Human Resources Barb Malone said that she noticed during strategic planning back in 2018 that Shrewsbury’s district staff didn’t reflect the diversity of the student body, a fact that was also noted in last year’s audit.

“What became clear to me is that our pools of candidates were overwhelmingly white,” Malone said.

According to the audit, in 2020, 51 percent of Shrewsbury students were white compared to 93.6 percent of staff. Additionally, 33 percent of students were Asian com-

pared to 4.8 percent of staff members.

Malone said the district’s most diverse staff pool was its substitute teachers, which it looked for in part thanks to its 2018 planning. “[We] realized that a lot of them were very, very educated, gifted people with careers that might have originated in a different country, but that we could help them through the licensure process,” Malone said.

Malone also reexamined job postings, and the district talked with local diverse universities with education programs to attract candidates.

“We hope that by building those diverse pools, we’ll have more finalists that better reflect the diversity both of our community and diversity in general,” Malone said.

Citizens Scholarship Foundation of Marlborough, Dollars for Scholars, (CSF), an affiliate of the nationwide non-profit Scholarship America.

Over thirty years later, more than $875,000 has been awarded to 1,200+ deserving Marlborough residents. Many of those initial volunteers are still involved and continue to fundraise for award grants, but now the goal is to increase the individual scholarship amounts.

“Five-hundred dollars or $1,000 doesn’t even make a ‘ding’ let alone a dent in the cost associated with college classes these days, not even for books,” noted Mary Jo Nawrocki.

Nawrocki is one of the original volunteers and former Assabet Valley Regional Technical High (AVRTH) Superintendent/Director, Marlborough School Committee member, and Marlborough City Councilor. “Our goal is to increase the individual amounts to $2,000 each,” she said.

The 12 for 10 fundraising idea To that end, the latest effort in a long string of creative fundraising attempts (Cow Chip Bingo, motorcycle rides, spelling bees, etc.) will be a push towards increasing local business participation with the 12 for 10 Fundraiser. As CSF co-founder, Marylou Vanzini is still a driving force behind the organization and admits that the idea for this newest venture came to her in the middle of the night. “A pledge for $1,200 per year, every year for ten years, will allow us to double scholarships to $2,000 each while adding $200 to the endowment fund with every new pledge,” she explained.

“Our goal is to engage at least twelve local businesses (or individuals!), but I am really hoping for eighteen!”

Off to a good start CSF volunteers are arranging meetings with local owners and managers to encourage their participation. The first of these meetings was quite successful, with Evviva

Special QCC scholarship available Statistics show that a large percentage of Marlborough students, regardless of which high school they attend, would qualify as economically disadvantaged, and more than half of the graduates require some financial support to continue their education.

With the $2,000 scholarships, the hope is that if a student is not considering college because of cost, they might instead use these funds at one of the community colleges.

Northborough & Southborough School Districts opt-out of school choice

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH/SOUTHBOROUGH - The Northborough-Southborough Regional School Committee unanimously voted to opt-out of the inter-district school choice program at their meeting May 19.

This decision aligns with the vote of both the Northborough K-8 and Southborough K-8 School Committee.

Although there are some advantages to school choice, such as a means to generate revenue and allow for flexibility in enrollment declines, Superintendent Greg Martineau cited disadvantages.

He explained the $5,000 in tuition the district would receive for each student would be far less than the district’s per-pupil expenditure of $18,621.13 based on fiscal year (FY)2020.

The fall reopening of schools was also a concern for Martineau.

“There’s no need to add another variable...in terms of what the fall may look like,” he said.

School choice allows a parent or guardian to enroll his or her child in a school district other than the district in which the child resides.

Students are also selected by lottery, which can pose the potential for a student to require significant resources.

If a student is accepted for school choice in ninth grade, that student can remain in the district through graduation.

Regional School Committee member Chris Covino said relying on school choice money would be a long-term mistake.

“In an ideal world, you get a standard distribution of students,” he said. “Generally speaking, my experience has been that the distribution is not particularly random. Usually, there are reasons why in-

dividuals are trying to leave… the descending district.”

“I think the timing is not perfect this year, but one of these years, this is a bridge we need to think…about crossing,” said committee member Paul Butka.

Although Covino agrees that the tuition paid to the district for an accepted school choice student would be good,

he stated that changes to the availability of future school choice seats could have budget ramifications.

“There becomes a structural deficit based on school choice funds, which becomes difficult to overcome without significant budget increases to the local communities,” he said.

“If we were to entertain this at a future time, I think it would be helpful to specify where those funds go,” he said. “You can become in that kind of structural deficit; it becomes folded in the operating budget. If you were ever to decrease the number of students or cut it off, you have a large deficit in funding.”

Superintendent Amber Bock said that Gordon would be a “huge benefit” to the school district and described him as “more than well prepared” for the job duties.

Gordon described himself as husband to a physician’s assistant and father to two young children.

He said that his philosophy is “student-centric” and added that he was attracted to the Westborough school district because he spent time reviewing the strategic plan and found that it “resonated” with him.

Not only is there a “hyperfocus on students,” he said, but he was drawn to the commitment to “diversity, inclusion,

equity and equality for students and the growth of the district overall.”

Conversations with Bock “drove it home for me,” Gordon said, adding, “There’s total symmetry there…I felt like the stars aligned, and I got a good feeling in my gut. When you talk about kismet, this was it.”

Bock noted that she and Gordon visited the schools during the day, and Gordon had the opportunity to meet his future team members. He also participated in a meeting with school leaders.

The superintendent noted that it was a “productive, tiring day” and joked that they should let Gordon go home to rest.

“I’m very excited to bring what I consider finding my niche and what I love to do and bringing that to Westborough,” Gordon said.

The School Committee also said goodbye to student representative Kyla Kamugu. They noted the student who succeeds her in that role has a lot to live up to.

Members praised Kamugu for being so active on the committee and sharing her perspective as a high school student.

Kamugu said it was an honor to “bridge the gap” between the committee and students and attend meetings “despite how long they are.”

Shrewsbury applies for funds for school renovations

SHREWSBURY - Shrewsbury Public School District is seeking funding to replace all 165 windows of Oak Middle School as well as the roof on the Floral Street School.

“These two projects need to be done,” Assistant Superintendent for Finance and Operations Patrick Collins told the School Committee May 26.

The School Committee voted to submit two statements of interest to the Massachusetts School Building Authority (MSBA) for partial funding of the projects.

If Shrewsbury is successful, MSBA could fund about half of the project.

“I think these are pretty much no-brainers,” said Superintendent Joseph Sawyer.

“If the state chooses us, we’ll get $0.50 on the dollar to partner with them.”

Shrewsbury is filing for funding under its Accelerated Repair Program, which primarily grants funds for repairs to roofs, windows and doors and boilers.

“They do this to expand the lifespan of public schools and

hopefully preserve their prior investments in public school construction,” Collins said.

The roof at Floral is the original roof when the school was opened in 1997, Collins said.

Oak Middle School, meanwhile, was renovated in 2004 in a project that Collins said was funded by the MSBA. However, the windows weren’t

replaced as part of that effort.

They are 41 years old.

“Do you know why the windows weren’t replaced in ’04 when we did the renovation?” asked Vice Chair Sandra Fryc.

According to Collins, at the time, the district believed that it would save money.

Collins said last year, MSBA received 90 applications and

funded 25 projects.

“It is a competitive process,” Collins said. “Competitive in the sense that the worse off you are, the higher chance that you’ll be eligible for funding.”

MSBA will review its applications over the summer and then conduct site visits. Shrewsbury will know in the fall if it will be awarded the funds.

Algonquin Regional High School honors graduates

NORTHBOROUGH - Algonquin Regional High School presented diplomas to 2021 graduates during a ceremony on June 6.

The event was held outdoors on the Richard Walsh Field, marking the first outdoor graduation held at Algonquin after many years of holding the ceremony indoors in the gymnasium.

In keeping with tradition, graduation day was extremely hot, with temperatures approaching 90 at the start of the ceremony.

Graduates paraded around the field’s track and marched to their seats to the tune of Pomp and Circumstance. That was followed by a prerecorded performance by the Senior Vocalists singing the Star Spangled Banner.

This event as a whole broke from initial graduation plans largely due to a last-minute announcement in late May from Gov. Charlie Baker that mask mandates and other COVID-19 restrictions would largely be lifted.

This allowed graduation to look much more like a traditional ceremony than it would have.

“We want to make this a memorable experience and memorable for the right reasons,” said Principal Bevan during a May 19 Regional School Committee meeting.

Westborough High graduates resilient Class of 2021

WESTBOROUGH - Humidity didn’t seem to faze the Westborough High School (WHS) Class of 2021 as they assembled June 5 for their outdoor graduation.

The 311 students are the 149th class to graduate from WHS. Graduating senior Madilyn Richards began the ceremony by singing “The Star Spangled Banner.”

Surrounding the turf field were decorations from the previous evening’s Memory Lane stroll for the graduating seniors and their families. Memories continued at the podium as School Committee Chair Kristen Vincent welcomed everyone to the ceremony.

Class President Jane Pittorino redefined “success” while sharing her WHS journey. Noting that her past presidential campaigns didn’t end victoriously, she thanked classmates for voting for her in their senior year.

“Above all, I didn’t give up,” she declared.

A sunny ‘forecast’ for Shrewsbury seniors

By Laura Hayes Contributing Writer SHREWSBURY - Sitting in a sea of navy blue on the turf field at Shrewsbury High School, the Class of 2021 marked a lot of firsts in their school’s history.

They were the first class to have an outdoor graduation in about 40 years. They were the first class to have an outdoor graduation on the campus.

And they were the first class in school history to have two valedictorians — Aryan Kale and Alyssa Guo. “I was pretty nervous writing my speech, but then I remembered that [Principal Todd Bazydlo] told me that everyone is really only here to receive a diploma or watch a loved one receive a diploma and that no one is ever going to remember a word of what I say,” Kale joked.

The impact of COVID-19 was the topic of many of the speeches. Kale recalled the high school closing for cleaning in March 2020, not knowing it was their last day of junior year. It was then uncertain if they would even they would have an in-person graduation, Kale said.

“While COVID is still in the forefront of our minds, it will not be what defines our high

school experience,” Kale said.

Guo, meanwhile, compared the seniors’ perseverance to her own experience as a figure skater.

“We’re not strangers to struggle, especially during the chaos of the last year, but all of us have persevered in one way or another,” she said.

Kale and Guo were two of 453 graduates who received their diplomas June 4. Origi-

nally, graduation was to be held June 3, but it got pushed to June 4 due to the potential of rain.

Superintendent Joseph Sawyer likened the challenge of forecasting the weather for graduation to the difficulty of forecasting the COVID-19 pandemic over the past two school years.

high school experience hadn’t been affected by the pandemic.

Decisions had to be made how to educate the students, he noted.

“I’m quite sure that there were times when my decisions were imperfect and caused you frustration and difficulties. And for that, I’m sorry,” Sawyer said.

He commended the students and their families for the perseverance, just as he celebrated school staff for adapting to meet their needs.

The students are better equipped to adapt to challenges and drastic changes thanks to that work, he said.

“Here’s my final forecast for the class of 2021,” Sawyer added. “I’m predicting that you will live lives that will model respect and kindness, that use your knowledge and skills to make significant contributions to the well-being of others and your community, and that will make a positive difference to those who are fortunate to receive your friendship and love.”

WESTBOROUGH - Hundreds of honking cars decorated with window paint, balloons and streamers cut a more than mile-long path through Downtown Westborough June 5, as part of the town’s second annual graduation parade.

Celebrating the Class of 2021, organizer Roberta Brown said this was more than just a big graduation party or a celebration of COVID-19’s loosening grip on daily life.

“Roberta wants people to build bridges with each other, to help each other, to get the community back and accepting of each other,” she said of herself in an interview the day before the parade.

A longtime Westborough resident, Brown helped spearhead the town’s 300th Anniversary celebration in 2017.

for the high school Class of 2020, which saw its senior spring quickly crumble under the weight of the surging pandemic.

Through these experiences, though, she said she’s periodically run into a sense of disconnection in Westborough. Her desire to build bridges, she said, has driven her recent efforts.

“Let’s get together,” she

“I felt bad for the kids last year and I feel bad for the kids this year,” Brown said. “But, this is full of fun, it’s full of energy, it gets the community going, it gets people together.

Hudson parents, staff satisfied with school district’s communication

By Laura Hayes Contributing Writer HUDSON - Parents and teachers are overall satisfied with how Hudson Public Schools communicates with the community, according to a presentation by Superintendent Marco Rodrigues to the School Committee May 25.

The survey was part of Rodrigues’ evaluation and his goal set last fall to improve communication.

The district received 845 responses from staff and parents, and 80.1 percent of respondents were parents.

The survey was comprised of nine questions, asking to rank how well the district communicated important information and student successes. The survey also asked whether respondents were satisfied with the district’s efforts to solicit feedback.

Overall, 81.2 percent of respondents said they were very satisfied or somewhat satisfied with HPS’ communication.

The respondents also provided feedback on how Hudson communicates with its community. About 58% percent said the district’s website was informative and useful.

Some respondents asked HPS not to leave a message that asked them to check another form of communication, such as a phone call telling them to check their email. Respondents also asked that phone calls during the school day be limited to emergencies.

Others appreciated that district news was communicated in different languages, though

some asked for videos to include captions.

“I think this also validates the comments that the School Committee will make in my evaluation about me progressing in my goal,” Rodrigues said.

Rodrigues was evaluated on district goals, which were set by him and the School Committee, as well as state standards.

School Committee members evaluated Rodrigues prior to the recent town election. Member Steve Smith said five members provided complete feedback while two gave only partial feedback.

Overall, the School Committee was pleased with Rodrigues’ performance and ranked him as “proficient” in instructional leadership, family and community engagement and professional culture and “exemplary” on management and operations.

Smith noted that two members ranked him as “needing improvement” when it came to addressing family concerns.

In the comments, School Committee members said the use of video was “powerful,” adding that some of them could have been shorter and more concise.

Members also hoped that parent forums will return next year.

“Before I was on the committee, I was very skeptical, and there were things I didn’t understand or know about what was going on in the school system,” said School Committee member Mark Terra-Salomão.

Terra-Salomão said he didn’t agree with the evaluation, saying that Rodrigues has been doing at a minimum proficient work. He said that Rodrigues spent time explaining what was

happening in the school system when he was elected.

“Obviously, there is room for improvement … but I think we as a school committee working with you and your team can do that collaboratively,” TerraSalomão said.

Beginning June 1, the library resumed welcoming patrons without prior appointments.

Westborough superintendent’s self-assessment addresses `wounded relationships’ during pandemic Westborough schools superintendent Amber Bock sits during a recent School Committee meeting.

By Susan Gonsalves Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - On May 26, Superintendent of Schools Amber Bock presented a selfassessment to the Westborough School Committee as part of that board’s evaluation of her job performance.

The COVID-19 pandemic and the havoc it wreaked on stakeholders—students, families, faculty, and the superintendent herself —factored into her comments and self-judgment.

Managing the budget and implementing Social Emotional Learning (SEL) goals were areas Bock cited as “exemplary.” Also receiving high marks were instructional leadership, management and operations, and community engagement through participation on various committees.

She also spoke about partnering with the group Westborough Connects on bringing about community-based programming.

Bock praised the faculty and leadership team throughout the assessment, noting that she is a part of that team and shares in those accomplishments with fellow team members.

communication with stakeholders is an area where she fell short of achieving her goals.

Bock said her work over the past year had been characterized by “highly varied, often strong emotions” about the best course of action to take for almost every decision she made.

Some of her decisions, Bock said, left some people “disappointed and disapproving” of the district and her work as superintendent.

She said that even one student, faculty member or parent feeling like she didn’t provide leadership in their best interests is “one too many.”

HUDSON - Students at Hudson High School as well as the town’s Quinn Middle School received long-awaited COVID-19 shots on June 4 thanks to a clinic within their schools.

Organized in partnership with the Hudson Health Department and UMass Memorial Health, the clinic immunized students whose families registered for the vaccine and provided signed consent for their child to be vaccinated.

Parents/guardians had the option of being present during the vaccine clinic and were also able to receive the vaccine themselves. Portuguese and Spanish interpreters were available to assist the families.

This comes as a number of area school districts including nearby Marlborough and Shrewsbury are working to vaccinate their students through similar in-school clinics.

Bock acknowledged that faculty and school leaders did “exceptionally well” in difficult circumstances.

She also recognized that there are hard feelings.

“The wounded relationships are raw,” she said. “…There’s a real sense of people being shattered by this experience and their sense that I defeated them or abandoned them or was in opposition to them.”

Those “real and true” feelings are shared by people in her role across the state, Bock said.

Bock will be compiling survey results, public forum comments and other compiled feedback to also present to the School Committee for its review.

She said that everyone needs time to rest, and she looks forward to coming back and “digging into” the next school year in the fall.

School Committee Vice Chair Stephen Doret pointed out the superintendent’s good work with the budget, which passed Town Meeting and received the approval of the Select Board, Finance Advisory Committee and Capital Improvements Committee.

He said there was the potential Bock had to hear from “12,000 to 20,000 critics day in and day out” and added “the fact that we’re all still here is pretty amazing.”

Doret said that in spite of the negativity, Bock is the leader of a team that performed “way above average, exemplary,” throughout the pandemic.

He said the school system provided the best education it could for students during trying, unprecedented times.

“Your reflections are taken to heart and guide me, so thank you,” Bock said.

Hudson parent says remote students excluded from in-person end-of-year activities

HUDSON - With the school year winding down, the Hudson Public School District is preparing for its end-of-theyear activities.

However, one parent expressed disappointment that remote students — particularly remote fourth-graders — were being excluded from those in-person celebrations.

“I really hoped that we could have come up with at least a fourth-grade graduation ceremony outdoors to include all the fourth graders,” parent Beth Langlois said during the May 25 School Committee meeting.

In April, Langlois opted to have her kids remain in the remote program so that they didn’t have to change teachers near the end of the school year and go back to a school they haven’t been in for over a year.

“It just didn’t make sense,” she said. “It would have been too disruptive.”

She thanked Assistant Principals Rachel Scanlon and Judy Merra for their work on the remote program.

“I know that they’re working to make their virtual Fun Day special, and I’m sure it will be amazing,” Langlois said. “It’s not what our kids wanted. They wanted to be there in person, but I appreciate everything that they’re doing.”

According to a schedule provided to the Community Advocate by Superintendent Marco Rodrigues, in addition to end-of-the-year virtual activities for all remote students, fourth-grade teachers are planning a special virtual ceremony for remote students.

Part of that ceremony will include messages from district leaders, school principals and teachers, a group poem and a movie reflecting on the students’ year together.

Like their in-person peers, the remote students will also receive a T-shirt and yearbook from their home school.

“Our principals and teachers have done a great job adjusting and modifying endof-year activities to conform with the current COVID-19 restrictions,” Rodrigues said in an email.

He added that while Gov. Charlie Baker lifted most of

the COVID-19 restrictions effective May 29, restrictions remain in place for schools, except for the outdoor mask mandate.

School Committee member Chris Yates said during the meeting that the committee had received “a lot” of emails on this topic.

“I wholeheartedly disagree with the decision not to include the remote students in the end-of-year activities,” Yates said.

He asked that Rodrigues and the principals re-examine the decision.

“I think these kids have been through enough, especially the students that remained remote,” Yates said.

Remote students to participate in Fly Up Day As discussion focused on end-of-the-year celebrations, the topic of fourth grade “Fly Up Day” also came up in conversation.

Typically, fourth graders participate in “Fly Up Day,” which is an opportunity for them to get a tour of Quinn Middle School from current students.

With remote fourth graders unable to participate in inperson end-of-the-year celebrations, Langlois expressed concern that they would be excluded from an in-person Fly Up Day. “There’s a lot to be said for the camaraderie of joining your other classmates and, frankly, feeling included,” Langlois said.

Rodrigues said that the remote students will participate in the Fly Up Day to Quinn as a cohort.

He said Fly Up Day will take place over a three-day period, and the remote students will go to the school on one of those days.

S CO R E B O A R D As teams approach that time of year, they’re celebrating the relaxation of previous pandemic restrictions.

“The spring season has been the closest to normal as we’ve seen all year,” Algonquin Athletic Director Mike Mocerino said in a recent interview with the Community Advocate.

He added, “We were able to provide our athletes with more competitions… provide a Central Massachusetts Tournament, and the MIAA is hosting their seasonal tournament.”

Mocerino credited the student-athletes and coaches for the success of this season.

“Our student-athletes and coaches have done a tremendous job following the guidelines and protocols that have been in place all year,” he said.

Algonquin rugby beats Brookline

NORTHBOROUGH - The Algonquin boys rugby team beat Brookline 26-0 in a game that Brookline called during halftime due to the lopsided score.

The teams continued with an unofficial second half played in a 10 v 10 formation as opposed to the standard 16 v 16 gameplay mandated by official rules. They did not keep score in that scrimmage portion of their contest.

Their regular season complete, Algonquin moved on to the postseason where it hopes to make a run at the state championship.

Friends of Jay Dion Golf Classic seeking sponsors for event

By Debra Roberts Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - The Friends of Jay Dion Memorial Golf Classic recently announced that they will once again host their namesake event at Juniper Hill in Northborough on Thursday, Sept. 2, 2021.

The annual event is held in honor of longtime Northborough resident, Jay Dion.

“Jay had an impact on everyone he met and we want this event to have an impact as big as Jay’s personality,” a recent press release stated.

Dion passed away unexpectedly in 2016 at the age of 52, due to a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as NUT-midline

carcinoma, leaving behind his wife Gayle and two children, Logan and Tyler.

The golf classic had in its first three years generated several hundred thousand dollars for the Dana Farber Cancer Institute’s Jimmy Fund as well as the the Jay Dion Scholarship Fund for graduating seniors in need.

However, last year’s event was cancelled due to the pandemic.

The title sponsor for the golf classic is Boston Scientific, where Dion worked as an engineering manager. The event’s planning committee is looking for several more sponsors to help make it a successful event and is offering several types of sponsorship opportunities on its website.

The golf classic itself will kick off with a Tito’s Bloody Mary Bar at breakfast. Numerous festivities include contests, giveaways, a boxed lunch, BBQ dinner banquet, guest speakers, live entertainment/DJ, raffles, as well as silent and live auctions. Banquet tickets will also be available for non-golfers. All proceeds will go to the Jimmy Fund and the Jay Dion Scholarship fund.

For Algonquin boys lacrosse, OT win gives taste of playoff energy

NORTHBOROUGH - Thursday, May 25 was a day that Algonquin’s Tim Hostage and the rest of the Tomahawks’ boys lacrosse team will never forget.

With the first big crowd of the year on hand surrounding the field behind their school, Algonquin erased a four-goal fourth-quarter deficit and stunned rival Shrewsbury in overtime for a 9-8 win.

Hostage had the game-tying goal with just 37 seconds left and then notched the gamewinner on the first possession of overtime. After he scored, Hostage wasn’t just mobbed by teammates, but a huge section of the student body that had come out to watch the game as they stormed the field.

The win clinched the MidWach A division for the team.

More importantly, though, it came just as everyone in attendance was discovering how much the atmosphere and excitement of high school sports had been missed throughout the pandemic.

“It was a once-in-a-lifetime moment that I’ll remember forever,” Hostage said of his game-winning overtime goal.

“I had the short stick on me, decided to take it to the crib, and having all my friends, all the fans out there was the greatest thing ever. [I] couldn’t ask for anything else.”

At the time, the win moved Algonquin’s win/loss record to 7-2, with a 6-0 record in league play. Shrewsbury dropped to 5-4 overall, with a 4-2 record in league action.

With a bit of a shortened season due to the coronavirus, the win for Algonquin was also a momentum boost heading into the rapidly approaching postseason.

“It’s huge,” said Algonquin coach Matt Nofsinger. “These guys just showed they don’t quit. That’s the type of team we have, and these guys just kept battling. What a great atmosphere this was for lacrosse, and hopefully, it’s a big spark for us with only a few games left until the playoffs.”

Shrewsbury led 6-4 at the half, and two goals from Will Ambach in the third pushed it to 8-4 heading to the fourth quarter.

Knapp proved to be huge in the final frame both physically and on ground balls, scoring a “pole goal” with 3:38 to go to keep Algonquin alive and within two at 8-6.

A low left-handed laser from Charlie David off a feed from Chris Carreras cut the deficit to 8-7 22 seconds later.

It appeared as if the comeback was going to fall short when Algonquin was flagged for a push with 2:05 remaining.

With a man in the box for 30 seconds, all Shrewsbury had to do was work the ball around and kill the remaining time.

But it was turned possession over, and Knapp picked up the ground ball to quickly get it upfield to Jack Battles. Battles

found a streaking Hostage who buried the game-tying goal with 37 seconds left.

Throughout the day, Owen Morse was dominant at the face-off X, winning 15 of the 21 draws. Morse won the opening draw in OT, and Nofsinger called timeout. After the timeout, it didn’t take long for Hostage to beat his man up top while moving to his right.

Hostage fired a bounce shot that beat Colonials’ goalie Matt Montoya (14 saves) and set off a wild celebration.

“We just tell everyone to keep pushing,” Hostage said when asked what the message was on the bench before the fourth quarter. “We don’t have a very big bench, so everyone has to play all the time, and we Algonquin | 33

Westborough’s Harry Crump ‘thumped’ his way into the football history books

NICK ABRAMO ON SPORTS WESTBOROUGH - A TV show based on the football playing days of the late Harry Crump would likely be a hit.

Small-town boy makes a name for himself as a fullback for the Westborough Rangers, Class of 1959. Goes on to star at Boston College. Makes the Boston Patriots in the early 1960s. Plays in the 1963 AFL championship game.

And this production has a ready-made title — “The Thump,” an onomatopoetic nickname based on Harry’s ability to bowl over would-be tacklers in the open field. His brother and teammate Ronald Crump, also a standout player for the Rangers, would be a main character, and his teen-

age friends and teammates would, perhaps, be driving around in a now-iconic ’57 Chevy Bel Air and hanging at the town diner.

Of course, black and white might be the way to go here since these, after all, are days gone by and, as the decades pass, more and more relegated to clippings than to actual memories.

Oh, but the memories are still there for many.

“As a senior, Harry was 205 pounds, and that was big for the time,” said Donald Ayres, Crump’s high school teammate. “Somebody from the opposing team’s secondary would try to tackle him, and he would run right over them.

They would bounce off. He wouldn’t have to go around them. That was just him.”

years, a rarity,” Ayres added.

“That’s how talented he was.

He was also on the baseball team from the seventh grade on. And as good as he was in football, in my opinion, he was even better [as a catcher] in

baseball. In college [football], he played in the Senior Bowl and made a great showing.”

Bill Linnane, an offensive tackle who blocked for Crump on those Art Kojoyian-coached Rangers teams, remembers

Harry as a fun-loving person and a party guy.

“My family knew his mom and dad,” Linnane said. “We were townies, as Harry was. He was a great individual and an excellent fullback, no question about it. We lost track of each other when we went off to college, but we reconnected while he was still at BC. I got to know some of his college and Patriots teammates, and I took Harry skiing for the first time. He was shocked to see what it looked like at the top of the mountain.”

Larry Eisenhauer, a 6-foot-5 defensive end, was one Patriots player who Linnane met through Crump.

“His hand wrapped around mine, and I looked straight up at him,” Linnane said about Eisenhauer. Crump, who died at 80 in September of last year, was drafted by the Patriots in 1963 and played one AFL season for the team.

Wearing jersey No. 31, he started two of their 14 regularseason games, rushing for 120 yards on 49 carries for a 3.3 yards-per-carry average. He scored five touchdowns. In the AFL title game, a 51-10 loss to the San Diego Chargers, he rushed for 18 yards on seven carries and caught two passes for 28 yards.

He started out his career in photography and, after college and a stint working as a photography assistant on advertising shoots around Boston, he used his eye for detail and his ability to work with his hands to take on handyman projects for added income.

F45 Hudson offers unique workouts and much more

By Dakota Antelman Managing Editor HUDSON - The international chain F45 Fitness is coming to Hudson this year thanks in part to one lifelong health care professional’s want to help people develop healthier lifestyles and reduce the chances of developing chronic medical issues.

Indeed, says Principal and Operator Linda Belsanti, F45 is as much a health and wellness community as it is a fitness studio.

“Our goal is to give a heart pumping workout,” she said in a recent interview. “But we are much more than that.”

F45 was founded in 2011 in Australia. Since then, its network has grown to include close to 2,000 fitness studios in roughly a dozen countries.

Belsanti’s Hudson location comes as one of two new locations in Massachusetts, joining eight other studios already in operation here.

“Classes are geared towards all levels of fitness from the, from the beginner to the advanced,” she said, touting the presence of nationally certified personal trainers in F45 studios.

“It’s like getting personalized training in a group setting.”

Prior to this new entrepreneurial chapter in her life, Belsanti spent 20 years as a nurse at Mass General Hospital in Boston.

Through that work, she said, she saw room for society at large to improve patterns of preventative care and general best practices for health.

“When I started toying with the idea of opening a fitness studio, it was because I really

felt that there needs to be more resources and outlets and support to help people to improve and maintain their health before it results in something else,” she said.

“The doctor will say ‘Go exercise more,’” she added.

“Well, that’s not really prescriptive.”

F45 gives customers concrete ways to get that exercise, breaking classes down into a series of accessible but challenging workouts.

“Some people are looking to lose body fat,” Belsanti said. “Some people are looking to gain muscle mass. Really based on what your goal is, we help you along your fitness

move to a new school district will redouble their efforts before fall. Sellers can list their home and go on vacation during showings (we recently listed a Northborough home and the seller intentionally took a few days off allowing unfettered access to the home for showings and an open house…the seller returned to multiple offers).

If you’re thinking of selling, it’s still a great time. This past spring market was strong and we expect this to continue.

The fall market promises to be strong as well.

Those improvements you made during quarantine will mean good things when selling!

If you’re selling in the fall, use this time to do those little repairs around the house you’ve put off. Some don’t think any improvements are needed and I’d submit taking care of ankle biting issues will better position the home.

If you’re buying, take solace in looking at homes and making offers being a little less painful. To be honest, buying this past spring has been a little like going in the ring with a championship boxer:

you keep getting knocked out. Exceptions are those positioned to buy with cash and with no inspections.

Let’s face it, not everyone has the resources (including familial resources) to pay cash and it troubles me for someone to buy a home without an inspection (although in full disclosure we’ve pulled the inspection contingency, too, to compete).

Sure, some sellers will say they “missed the market.”

Timing any market involves some degree of intestinal fortitude, rich analysis and a degree of luck. After a brief pause, real estate was a (surprising to me) shining star last year!

The slow return to a more balanced market is welcomed by all.

The American Heritage Museum Presents:

American Elegance Father’s DAY LIVING HISTORY WEEKEND

JUNE 19TH & 20TH 9 AM TO 5 PM A fantastic Father’s Day weekend event! Many of the Collings Foundation’s astounding classic automobiles will be out in the sunshine in a grandiose automobile presentation at 1:00pm daily, called American Elegance. Accompanying colorful vintage radio broadcast narration will be sure to entertain! Several other exhibitions and surprises will be afoot. Historic aircraft and tanks will be on display.

The American Heritage Museum will be open along with the two additional museums on our campus: the Historic Aircraft Hangar and the Classic Automobile Barn. The hangar features 12 aircraft from 1909 to 1945 and a collection of Midget, Sprint, and Indy Cars. The automobile collection features over 25 rare automobiles from 1900 through 1946. These additional buildings on the American Heritage Museum campus are only open for special event weekends such as this one – all museum buildings and outdoor events are covered with admission.
