Dennington wins Southborough Selectman race

Ballot features contested races for Planning Board, Board of Selectmen, Regional School Committee NORTHBOROUGH - A busy election season came to a close May 11 in Northborough when voters headed to the polls to settle contested races for Planning Board, Regional School Committee and Board of Selectmen. Kerri Martinek and Anthony Ziton won reelection to the Planning Board. Kathleen Howland and Karen Ares won their races for School Committee. And Julianne Hirsh and Kristen Wixted carried the victory in the Board of Selectmen race. The Planning Board race put incumbents Ziton and Martinek against former Planning Board Member Theresa Capobianco and land surveyor Glenn Odone. The Regional School Committee race had incumbents Howland and Ares running for re-election as recent Algonquin graduate and Northborough Diversity and Inclusion Committee Vice Chair Mariam Ibrahimi sought to make her entry into

SOUTHBOROUGH - Andrew Dennington won a two way race for a vacant seat on the Southborough Board of Selectmen, May 11. The race pitted Dennington against Michael Weishan as the Andrew Dennington two were collectively vying to replace Selectman Brian Shea, who announced in late March that he would not be running for re-election. Shea first won his way onto the board in 2015. After winning re-election in 2018, he pulled papers for another bid this year but did not return them. “After much consideration, I have decided against running for re-election to the Board of Selectmen,” he wrote in a comment announcing the decision on the blog MySouthborough. “After 6 years on the Board and 6 prior to that on the Advisory Committee, it is time for a much-needed break.” Dennington is a member of the Advisory Committee and previously chaired the Zoning Board of Appeals. Wishan, meanwhile, has served multiple stints on the Historical Commission, which he now chairs. A post on the official Southborough town Twitter account showed Dennington being sworn in shortly after election workers tallied unofficial election results. Outside of the Selectmen race, Southborough voters also weighed in on Regional School Committee race that ran concurrently in Northborough. Kathleen Howland and Karen Ares won that contest with a total of 1,743 and 1,571 votes respectively.

elected office. The Board of Selectmen campaign, likewise, had incumbent Hirsh running against Wixted, Vikram Verma and Tom Dalton for a pair of open seats. In a late development, incumbent Tim

Kaelin also jumped into the mix with a write-in campaign for Selectmen. That push briefly delayed election results on the night of May 11 as Town Clerk Andy Dowd noted all ballots with write-in votes had to be counted by hand. Scan QR code to read full election coverage
