There were concerns that the process of the Study Group led members to a predetermined outcome.

Northborough resident Rebecca Roman said she wasn’t sure the recommendation properly incorporated the majority of the individuals who wanted to have a voice. She suggested that the outcome should be left to a town vote.

SHREWSBURY - Voters in Shrewsbury greenlit a $9.5 million proposition 2 ½ budget override in municipal elections, May 4.

Drafted to address what officials described as grave budgetary issues, the vote allows Shrewsbury to fund a larger budget by bypassing a state limit on annual tax rate increases.

The question passed with a 60% majority according to unofficial results from Town Clerk Sharyn Thomas.

Beyond the override, incumbent Jon Wensky won Shrewsbury’s three way race for a sole School Committee seat.

NORTHBOROUGH/SOUTHBOROUGH - The Northborough Southborough Regional School Committee (RSC) voted to retire the Algonquin High School “Tomahawk” mascot following the recommendation of the Algonquin Mascot Study Group April 28.

All nine members who were present voted in favor of the decision.

Southborough Regional School Committee member Dan Kolenda, who was not present for the actual vote, was not in favor without giving the community additional time to voice concerns before a final vote.

WESTBOROUGH/MARLBOROUGH – Although BJ’s Wholesale Club has been a member of the business community for a decade, Westborough officials understand the company’s need to “right-size their space” into offices better suited to how they operate, Board of Selectmen Chairman Allen Edinberg recently told the Community Advocate.

Edinberg, who also serves on the Economic Development Committee, noted that EDC Coordinator Zach Boughner is working with stakeholders to help attract new tenants or redevelopment concepts at BJ’s current location at 25 Research Dr. BJ’s is seeking to move its headquarters into two buildings in Marlborough located at 100 and 250 Campus Dr. The

A spokesperson for BJ’s Wholesale Club said the relocation of its home office (corporate headquarters) was prompted by a need to better support the future of its work.

The new office space will feature a modern design and open floor plan, the spokesperson said, “creating a more collaborative work environment

for the team members.”

Additionally, the new space will be equipped with the technology infrastructure to accommodate hybrid work.

The fact that Marlborough is easily accessible and in close proximity to many major highways and a variety of attractions, hotels, shopping and restaurants were also factors in its selection as a new location.

The spokesperson expressed the company’s appreciation for the positive reception it has received from the City of Marlborough and the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation.

The estimated $15 to $18 million construction project will include approximately 190,000 square feet of office space and a data center. An additional $5 to $7 million will be spent on building a 120,000-square foot parking garage on the property for 300 vehicles.

MARLBOROUGH - A man was transported to UMass Medical Center via Life Flight helicopter on April 24, at approximately 12 p.m.

The person was working at a residence on Sudbury Street in Marlborough when he was struck by a falling tree and sustained serious injuries. It is unknown if the man was a worker or a resident of that address.

The man was transported to the parking lot of St. Matthias Church on Hemenway Street (one of the pre-designated landing zones in the city for medical helicopters) by Patriot Ambulance Paramedic 2.

Voters weigh in on upcoming Northborough elections W NORTHBOROUGH - Voters in Northborough will see ballots especially packed with names, May 11.

That’s thanks to a busy election season now seeing almost a dozen candidates running for seats on the Board of Selectmen, the Planning Board and the Regional School Committee alone.

As a busy campaign draws to a close, voters have sent several letters to the editor supporting a variety of candidates.

hy I support the reelection of Julianne Hirsh and the election of Vikram Verma. I listened to Ms. Hirsh at the Candidates Night and found most of her answers align with my belief in what the BOS responsibilities should be. I applaud her attempts at transparency, appreciate the suggestions for selectman to have town emails, revamping the interview for appointment process

and I agree that at the end of BOS meetings a discussion on what topics should be discussed for future agendas makes sense. I support Mr. Verma, because he has no personal agenda, has an open mind and the business acumen that will work well with the fiscal responsibilities of the BOS. He seemed sincere in his desire to serve the community.

I could not vote for Ms. Wixted for several reasons.

First, I found it troubling that her literature states she is “Supporting the voices of the impressive and intelligent new generation of women in town”. As a 34 yr. resident, over the age of 60, I have to ask myself “why doesn’t she

support me?” “is it already time to put me and others out to pasture?” Didn’t we just collectively as a nation, mourn the loss of RBG at the active age of 87 in the same year we elected a 78yr old for President? Come on, age is a number not a determining factor of intelligence. The literature also states, “Needs of our Senior Citizens, and a celebration of their stories” Then during the candidate’s night she suggested that seniors could be sharing those stories with elementary school children.

Ha, be careful what you ask for, those stories may include underage drinking, driving reckless and listening to Led Zeppelin and Jethro Tull, it was the 60’s and 70’s after all. If you really care about the seniors, don’t patronize us, value our experience and respect our opinions. Well, it’s 4 o’clock somewhere guess its time for supper, then jeopardy and lights out. ­— Fran Bakstran

e have been residents of Northborough for 20 years and want nothing more than for our town to prosper.

The past several weeks, we have been surprised by the level of personal attacks coming from the Martinek/Ziton campaign. We have done our research, as we would do for any election and learned that Martinek, Ziton and Theresa Capobianco served on the Planning Board together and voted the same way on one of the most divisive issues in this campaign. And yet, as we look at Facebook, there seems to be a different narrative being spun against Theresa Capobianco and even Glenn Odone who was not even on the board at the time!

We are relieved to say there have not been any statements from Theresa and Glenn against the Martinek/Ziton campaign. They have been working hard to reach the voters personally by talking to them, getting out in the community, and interacting with people face to face. Their focus is what is best for our town.

Theresa Capobianco and Glenn Odone are honest, upstanding citizens who run their own businesses in town. Their qualifications combined, although not required far exceed who should be on this board. Every day they are helping residents of Northborough solve legal and zoning problems. They would bring that expertise, approach, and demeanor to the Planning Board.

We want to thank both Theresa and Glenn for their desire and willingness to donate their time if elected,

to make it their mission to help make Northborough a sustainable, prosperous and SAFE town.

Join us in voting for integrity, professionalism, knowledge, and respect. Glenn Odone and Theresa Capobianco are the best choices for Northborough’s Planning Board.

rate themselves from that same decision and out the finger at Theresa? We deserve better.

We deserve someone who has and will stand by and explain their votes.

Here is the truth. The Bartlett Street area where the warehouses are located has been zoned for industrial development since 1953. The owners of the land have the right to present any project that falls within the permitted use under the bylaws.

That includes warehouses.

Martinek and Ziton approved two of those warehouses in 2018, without voicing any concerns or opposition despite being on the board and having the opportunity to do so. The truth is that Martinek and Ziton have been less than forthcoming with the facts regarding warehouses. Martinek and Ziton lack the integrity to take responsibility for their role in those two decisions. Instead, they blame Capobianco and anyone else for their own decisions. It’s an inconvenient truth in their campaign to please people.

I don’t want someone who cannot take responsibility for their own actions to be on any board or committee in Northborough. We are a town of honest people, people of integrity. This campaign has shown that Martinek and Ziton lack honesty and integrity. Theresa Capobianco has owned every decision she’s made as a former planning board member, and she provides the full facts.

I’ve known Glenn Odone for many years, and he is an honest and fair person with an open mind and willingness to hear all sides. I want my planning board to have members with integrity. I’m voting for Odone and Capobianco who will bring deep knowledge, integrity, and a professional approach to the work of the Planning Board.

Eight I-90 bridges to be replaced over summer weekends MassDOT presents method for faster construction

By Susan Gonsalves Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH/SOUTHBOROUGH - The state Department of Transportation Highway Division has plans to upgrade and replace eight I-90 bridges (east and westbound) in Westborough and Southborough over eight weekends this summer.

On April 28, 200 callers listened to a presentation by the MassDOT on how a contracting method, Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC), uses one entity for both design and construction.

The idea is to save time, promote collaboration between engineers, MassDOT staff and contractors, and reduce the amount of inconvenience motorists will face.

The bridge project will replace the superstructures of six bridges over Flanders Road in Westborough and Parkerville Road, Woodland Road, and Cordaville Road in Southborough.

The two bridges over Cordaville Road will be replaced entirely.

“This (ABC) is the right way to take care of our transportation infrastructure,” said Mickey Splaine of MassDOT District 3.

Work hours will be Fridays at 9 p.m. to Mondays at 5 a.m.

I-90 handles 100,000 drivers per day, and Splaine said most motorists will hardly notice the work is going on.

He noted during the public hearing April 28 that I-90 will be resurfaced, and the median barrier and guardrails will be replaced along the length of the

Splaine said the bridge work is needed to address deteriorating abutment walls and bridge decks. It’s also addressing rusting and corroding steels, replacing them with structures that will last 75 years.

“It’s just time,” Splaine said.

“The band aids were no longer feasible.”

Using traditional construction methods, the work would take three to four years to complete. ABC, however, uses precast concrete elements that Splaine likened to Lego pieces, shortening construction duration.

Erik Maki, vice president of consulting and engineering firm Tetra Tech, explained that travel on this portion of I-90 will consist of two lanes in each direction separated by a zipper barrier. The speed limit will be reduced to 45 m.p.h.

Motorists will be warned well in advance of detours as

the local roadway under the bridge will be closed to traffic during construction. Roads will be open to local residents but closed to regional drivers, he said.

MassDOT will use message boards and other signage to

warn drivers about the changes and to try to alleviate stress.

In response to a question from Westborough resident Anthony Linn, officials noted that the ABC technique is 20 to 30 percent more expensive than the traditional method. But

they feel it is worth it by saving time and resources and limiting disruption.

The project is state-funded through toll revenues.

Each bridge costs $2 to $3 million, according to Tim Cullinan, project manager at the Framingham-based J.F. White Contracting Co. Preparation work is underway. Suspect allegedly carjacks salesman while on test drive

conducted an investigation and located the stolen vehicle abandoned on Green Street between Route 20 and Centech Boulevard.

From there, they found a man, later identified as Nguyen, hiding in the woods.

Phuc Nguyen was arrested and charged with carjacking, larceny of a motor vehicle, armed robbery, receiving stolen property over $1,200, assault with a dangerous weapon and threatening to commit a crime - murder.

by Green Hudson, the environmental group behind this year’s annual Hudson CleanUp Weekend.

Volunteers set up camp outside Hudson High School on both days of their event, staffing a tent where they distributed trash bags and other supplies. Pouring over maps of Hudson, those volunteers also helped marshall clean-up efforts throughout the community, directing participants to particular areas that needed attention.

SHREWSBURY - A suspect allegedly stole a car from a Shrewsbury BMW salesman while on a test drive, April 27.

First announcing the news on April 28, Shrewsbury police identified their suspect as Phuc Nguyen. They said Nguyen and

the salesperson had been on a test drive when Nguyen allegedly assaulted the salesperson and displayed a firearm.

“The salesperson was able to escape and the suspect then fled the area in the stolen vehicle,” police wrote in a press release.

Westborough will not ‘opt out’ if aerial mosquito spraying is necessary Sun shines on part of the South Cedar Swamp.

Facing the annual increased threat of mosquito borne illnesses later this year, local officials are eyeing swamps and pockets of standing water as mosquito breeding grounds.

By Susan Gonsalves Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH –Selectmen gave the go-ahead for state aerial mosquito spraying to proceed if necessary. But they also now plan to contact legislators and urge them to explore more natural, environmentally-friendly alternatives in the future.

Interim Public Health Director Ray Gauthier spoke about the town’s ability to “opt out” of aerial spraying in a presentation to the board April 27, noting that the state requires communities to create and fund an alternative to have in place in case of an outbreak of mosquito-borne illnesses.

Board of Health Chairman Alan Ehrlich said that these illnesses are genuine health

concerns. For example, Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) has a 50 percent mortality rate and can cause a host of neurological complications for its survivors.

Westborough has also had cases of West Nile Virus “from

time to time.”

The mosquito-borne illnesses are a “real problem that need to be controlled one way or another,” Ehrlich said.

The presence of a local swamp, “an unending source of mosquitoes,” is another

reason the Board of Health recommended participating in the state’s spraying program, Ehrlich said.

Gauthier said the state program is completely different from the ground spraying done by the Central Massachusetts

Ehrlich said that residents individually can opt out of the ground spraying that is done on a regular schedule.

The aerial spraying, on the other hand, occurs when there is an outbreak like the surge of EEE cases two years ago. In that case, a large area—from Cape Cod to the New Hampshire border—was covered.

When that occurs, the state notifies the Mosquito Control Project, which stops its efforts for a week, Gauthier said.

Factors like rain and wind affect when aerial spraying can then proceed, he added.

Resident Louise Hetzler appeared before Selectmen to voice her strong opposition to the aerial spraying.

“Vote for the earth and against poisoning the land,” she told them, noting that the chemicals used also kill bees, butterflies, dragonflies, fish and more.

Both the ground and aerial spraying is wiping out pollinators, contributing to water pollution and endangering the earth, Hetzler said. “The insect apocalypse is happening now.

Future generations are counting on us to do the right thing.”

She urged the town to explore using non-toxic garlic products instead.

Selectman Patrick Welch thanked the resident for her passion on behalf of the environment, saying that the bees in his own backyard hive “died off.” He recalled seeing hundreds of fireflies with his children in the past, and those too are gone.

Welch said he supported Hetzler’s message and agreed that the state needs more environmentally friendly techniques and chemicals. However, he pointed out that the town will still have to pay for spraying, whether it opts out or not.

Selectmen Chairman Allen Edinberg said that there should be an effort to study the feasibility of using different mechanisms and safer compounds to achieve the same goal.

Selectman Shelby Marshall recommended that a letter be written to local legislators asking them to look for “more organic, natural solutions” in the future.

Shrewsbury seeks federal funding for Route 20 safety improvements

SHREWSBURY – Town Manager Kevin Mizikar and the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen spent part of their April 27 meeting reviewing a letter they would send to U.S. Congressman James McGovern (D-MA 02) seeking $15.4 million in federal funding for improvements on Route 20 from South Street to the Northborough town line.

The request comes two weeks after Mizikar suggested Selectmen formally ask the state to ban left turns from South Street onto Route 20 due to safety concerns.

That, in turn, came less than a month after a school bus accident at the nearby intersection of Avalon Way and Route 20 drew renewed public attention to an issue state and local politicians say they’ve been working to solve for years.

seeking federal funding to make these improvements as soon as possible,” Mizikar said April 27.

Board Chair Beth Casavant noted that State Representative Hannah Kane (RShrewsbury) had submitted a letter in support of this request.

“Congressman McGovern has shown a steadfast commitment to supporting initiatives and projects identified by local leaders on behalf of the communities they represent,” Kane told the Community Advocate when recently asked for comment.

“I reached out to express my strong support for the town of Shrewsbury’s request for $15.4 million in federal funding for traffic and safety improvements on Route 20.”

Kane has offered to coordinate briefings for the Congressman with Shrewsbury officials and MassDOT District 3 staff to provide him with an in-depth overview of this local priority project.

The Board unanimously agreed, without discussion, to authorize Mizikar to forward the letter to the Congressman.

Canoes and rowboats were the popular way to enjoy local lakes and ponds.

Lake Quinsigamond was no exception to this and, as related by some local “old timers” many years ago, it was not uncommon on a summer weekend to almost be able to “walk from the Shrewsbury shore to the Worcester shore” because there were so many rowboats and canoes on the “Lake!”

Here we have a view of the A.A. Coburn Boathouse, located on the Worcester shore, just south of what is now the

Route 9 bridge. A.A. Coburn was the son of Jesse Johnson (J. J.) Coburn, the person that first started developing the area around Lake Quinsigamond into a pleasure resort. The boathouse not only rented canoes and rowboats, but built them as well.

A.A. (Alvarado Alonzo) Coburn was active in the Lake area for many years – the current Alvarado Avenue is named after him.

The tall building in the background of the above photo was the theater for Lincoln Park, one of the most popular attractions at the Lake for many years. One of the many steamboats that once cruised Lake Quinsigamond’s waters can also be seen just offshore.

Today this same area is home to a high-rise condominium and a public housing complex.

By Lauren Schiffman Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - Things are looking up for Westboro Tennis & Swim Club, now under ‘new ownership.’ With the Club set to close in October 2020 due to Boston Sports Club’s bankruptcy, former owner and landlord Justin Lundberg stepped in and regained control of the business to make sure the Club stayed open and employees retained their jobs, despite the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Even though it’s new ownership,” said membership manager Jessica Kaiser, “it’s old ownership. It’s a really good thing,” she added.

Club staff is eager to welcome members and campers back this summer to enjoy the programming the Club is known for, with the comfort in knowing that safety precautions are in place.

“Navigating the pandemic has been very challenging for everyone, including health clubs in particular. But when people are ready to get back into fun, healthy activities, we’re here, and we’ll provide the safest possible environ-

“Older kids interested in becoming a camp counselor can participate in the counselorin-training program. It gives them a great start,” said Betsy Johnsen, Camp Director and Children’s Program Coordinator. In addition to learning the basics of CPR and COVID safety and protocols, CITs engage campers in activities that are safe and fun.

t the start of April, it was announced mortgage rates in the U.S. have risen for a seventh straight week. The average for a 30-year loan was 3.18%, which was up since last week when it was 3.17%. That was the highest since June, according to Freddie Mac data. Rates have gone up from their record low in January, which was 2.65%.

strong, but some buyers are starting to feel the pinch of the increased mortgage rates and reduced affordability and inventory frustrations.

Refinancing booms have also started to slow, which could be problematic for the mortgage industry, following their record 2020.

It’s possible that borrowing costs could keep going up and yields for the 10year treasuries are climbing as well.

The rate trajectory for the rest of the year does depend quite a bit on the strength of the economic recovery.

There is optimism thanks to available coronavirus vaccines, but mortgage rate increases foreshadow a strong economic recovery. If that doesn’t come to fruition, rates may stop their decline or start moving in the other direction.

However, some experts, like the Mortgage Bankers Association, expect rates could go as high as 3.6% by the end of 2021. The forecast three months ago from the same group was for rates to go to 3.5% late in 2021.

S o, what does all this mean?

Many analysts are expecting a pretty significant pullback in refinancing. It’s likely to slow quite a bit by the second half of 2021.

Even though the expectation is that mortgage rates will go high enough to slow refinancing, experts believe that they’ll still be at a point that’s low enough to encourage buyers.

Michael Fratantoni, chief economist at the Mortgage Bankers Association, believes that there will be a record volume of mortgages in 2021.

While the Federal Reserve doesn’t directly set mortgage rates, it does create an environment that lends itself to rates. The Fed cut rates when the pandemic recession started, and they have continued to signal they will keep rates low. There is a significant correlation between the rate on a 10-year Treasury bond and a 30-year mortgage.

Fr antantoni said the y think the Fed will continue to keep short-term rates at around zero through 2022 and only begin to slowly raise rates in 2023.

Marlborough halts applications for new multi-family housing developments

By Vicki Greene Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH—Many communities in the state are facing a housing crisis. But that has not been a problem in Marlborough.

With 13 projects permitted or under consideration, the City Council recently acted on a recommendation from Mayor Arthur Vigeant, voting to enact a 90-day moratorium on permit applications for any multifamily developments.

City awaiting guidance on state zoning law changes The state has recently made changes to municipal zoning laws and is also expected to release new census data, which may impact how Marlborough moves forward with its own zoning and permitting criteria.

The data will also influence the amount of required affordable housing and grant funding the city could qualify for relevant to housing and transportation.

Three projects previously approved in Downtown Village District In October of 2019, the City Council approved a Special Permit for a mixed-use development known as E on Main, at 161-175 Main St. That permit allowed for a seventh-story roof deck. A red partition is up, and demolition has started.

But a building permit has not yet been approved, according to Council President Michael Ossing.

The property is owned by Vincenza Sambataro of Wayland. He first secured approval to construct the mixed-use

development to include commercial units on the first floor, 67 residential units on top of those, and 43 parking spaces.

In addition to the E on Main project, the council has also already approved a special permit for Tavern at Marlborough, a mixed-used development on the John Rowe Funeral Home property adjacent to the Union Common off Main Street. Those behind that effort have since submitted changes to the Planning Board. No building permit has been issued.

The third project is based around 28 South Bolton St. Marilyn Green first submitted

it back in 2018-2019, receiving permit approval to construct a five-story building with 36 residential units, two retail and/ or office spaces and ground floor parking. However, Green has since sold the property to Cambridge company WoHo. WoHo has submitted a site plan application for a six-story mixed-use development at 28 South Bolton St. with 40-residential units and ground-floor retail. The proposal calls for 20 one-bedroom and 20-twobedroom units and 25 on-site parking spaces. This project will be discussed at an upcoming Urban Affairs Committee meeting.

Moratorium to take effect As of press time, the moratorium on new permits was expected to start within one week of that City Council vote on April 26. It will not impact plans submitted to the city for single-family homes.

A virtual public hearing allowing residents to weigh in has been set for Monday, May 24 at 8 p.m.

Making Learning Live After the trip to Jefferson’s plantation Norton could see this type of learning was a success.

“The kids couldn’t stop chatting about the trip,” said Norton. “I saw excitement and a level of interest I’d not seen all year on the screen. They immediately asked to go on another trip!”

One of Norton’s students remarked, “I like that we’re talking to a real person at a real place. It feels real and is way better than a movie.”

Another sign of success is that everyone shows up and the students are attentive.

“Their questions for the educator who toured the kids around Monticello were well thought out,” said Norton.

Tech Goes Home The ability to bring students to places remotely has been possible because of tech tools, such as the active board, a giant projector, in a classroom.

One group of students uses this screen to go on the trips, the other group uses their own screens at their homes. Everyone can see the live presenter.

After the trip, the students see one another using Zoom or Google Meets. For kids who miss a trip or want to revisit any of the destinations, all trips are recorded.

Westborough Schools change Columbus Day name on school calendar

By Susan Gonsalves Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH – Changing Columbus Day’s name on the school calendar to Indigenous People’s Day is “an outward sign of our commitment to anti-racism,” School Committee Chair Kristen Vincent said on April 28.

The unanimous vote at a School Committee meeting followed an ongoing discussion after the committee received several petitions in favor of a re-naming last fall.

Member Lisa Edinberg said that what the school system values is usually aligned with its policies and the way it functions. But, she noted, Columbus Day does not align with what the schools teach as character education in Westborough.

“To align with how we feel about anti-racism practices, altering [the name] makes sense to me,” Edinberg said.

She noted that Cambridge, Pittsfield, Lawrence, Holyoke, Wayland and several other

communities have dropped the Columbus Day name. More than a dozen states have done the same.

Edinberg said that a bill pushing a name change at the state level in Massachusetts didn’t pass the first go around.

If approved, though, that switch would become part of Massachusetts General Law. “This is not about cancellation culture or removing history from our textbooks,” Edinberg said.

Student Representative Kyla Kamugu added, “It’s not about erasing history but more about supporting those who were on the good side of it.”

Assistant Superintendent Daniel Mayer said that the “greatness of Columbus,” has not been part of the curriculum for years. He noted that history is complicated and students are introduced to information from multiple perspectives.

That approach, Mayer said, “on all events, is important for all of

us to understand to be global citizens.”

A new look at issues facing the country, particularly racism, has recently brought to light how poorly “anyone who was different and not white Anglo Saxon,” was treated historically, said School Committee Vice Chair Stephen Doret.

“Our education system has to step up to a true understanding of all people, what their needs are and how they fit into our society as a whole,” Do-

ret said. “Without doing that, we’re going to crash and burn.”

Vincent said the change did not mean Columbus is “cancelled,” and won’t ever be mentioned.

Instead, more “balanced points of view,” about exploration are studied. Similarly, other periods of history, like the Holocaust and the rise of Hitler, raise questions about how and why events happened and ask how society feels about them now.

Westborough to offer new general education summer programs

By Susan Gonsalves, Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH – Westborough schools will offer general education programs for all grades in addition to its usual special education summer sessions this summer.

Assistant Superintendent Daniel Mayer described the offerings to the Westborough School Committee, April 28.

Federal law requires a “robust” summer program for SPED students at risk of summer learning loss, he said.

Those sessions run July 6 to August 1 either 8 or 9 a.m. until noon.

New will be general education classes, also with a component for students for whom English is a second language.

The K-6 program begins July 12 and ends July 29, running from 9 a.m. to noon.

Grades 7-8 runs with those same dates and times. However, at the high school level, there are two separate programs.

The first, spanning June 29 to July 9 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is for students who want to bring up their grades and grade point average from a D. Superintendent Amber Bock said this “targeted recovery,” is limited to 10 points being added to a grade.

The second, runs from July 6 to July 29 and is geared to kids who failed one or more course.

Regional School Committee votes to retire Tomahawk mascot Mascot | from page 1

The community did have the opportunity to respond via a survey and through emails to committee members, many of which were received in the days leading up to the vote.

Mascot Study Group member Beth Wittcoff assured people that the students were not led by any of the adults on the committee.

“Students…were the leaders, and …who see this change as necessary and important,” she said.

School Committee member urges caution Kolenda was not in favor of having the final vote for the decision at this time due to the outpouring of community input in the last few days.

He said he was “fearful that we may do something tonight that does not reflect the overall consensus of both communities.”

“For this to be successful ‒ to retire or not ‒ we need to hear more from the com-

munity,” he added.

Regional School Committee member Chris Covino expressed how much the decision has weighed on him the last few weeks. He addressed concerns regarding losing school pride.

“The effort to change the mascot does not minimize the accomplishments of clubs or teams,” he said. “It’s the people who made those accomplishments, and those accomplishments will continue.”

Ultimately, he said it is the responsibility of the committee and of the school “to ensure that everybody feels valued and welcomed at the school they are attending.”

Community considers history Another community worry was that the Tomahawk would be erased from the history of the school.

Regional School Committee member Kathleen Polutchko said the mascot has

existed since 1959.

“I hope that the student body realizes we are not erasing…just transitioning” she said.

Covino agreed that the fact that the Tomahawk has been the mascot since inception should be respected and that there was no malicious intent when chosen.

Ultimately, the mascot decision was based on how a mascot should express the values and character of the school.

Covino said that although many view the Tomahawk as

a tool, it has elevated beyond a tool at this point.

“It is a symbol and has meaning; a meaning that is different to different people,” he said. “The symbol is causing harm to some of our students and violates what we believe to be a welcoming community.”

ARHS Principal Sean Bevan has been proactive for the possible transition. New sports uniforms were ordered without the name Tomahawk on them and items being sold at the school store do not display

the logo.

Algonquin moves forward with mascot transition The Study Group has proposed a five-to-seven-year timeline for fully phasing out the Tomahawk name and logo.

Regional School Committee member Paul Butka expressed his desire for a quicker transition, though, if done fiscally responsibly.

A new mascot and logo will be determined by a new study group.

Busing will be offered because of the availability of COVID-19 reimbursement funds. After initial slots are filled, classes will be open to families who feel their children need extra help because of the pandemic shutdown.

Superintendent Amber Bock emphasized that the schools don’t want to raise anxiety and parents should be re-assured that “recovery” efforts will continue year-round.

“Our experience tells us, you cast a wide net for who is going to be interested,” Mayer said.

“Then you have to juggle matching the teachers you’ll need with the number of participants.”

Administrators are unsure how many participants may enroll.

Starting a new job remotely Due to the pandemic, Moriarty worked remotely the first couple of months with her chocolate lab, Samson, and her cat, Eli keeping her company at home. All of her training was done online or by phone. Despite that challenge, she said, “The staff at the Town Hall and the Senior Center volunteers I spoke with were so patient and accommodating as I got up to speed. I cannot thank everyone enough for their help.”

Though starting a new job at a center that serves the public but is not yet open to the public might seem like a disadvantage, Moriarty said she actually feels fortunate to have started in the midst of a pandemic, despite the challenges. “It’s given me the opportunity to spend more time asking a lot of questions and be able to completely understand the processes at the center. But, of course, I can’t wait to see when things are in full swing.”

Creative approaches to support seniors The senior center is having to do things very differently, but Moriarty is not daunted.

“We have had to be creative with our approach. Though still closed, we are busy trying to provide as many services as we can. We’re working on several projects trying to ensure that local seniors have the supplies and resources they’ll need for the upcoming winter,” she explained. “We’ve just started ‘Help Feed a Senior’ to provide daily meals for Shrewsbury seniors and we’re partnering

What’s on the horizon Moriarty has some longterm goals for the center, in-

cluding revamping the volunteer program.

“Many of the current opportunities for volunteers are not available due to the pandemic,” she explained, “and things will certainly be different when we’re on the other side. I want to be sure we are meeting the needs of our local seniors and are offering as many opportunities as possible to engage the community.”

Besides her work for the senior center, Moriarty likes to crochet and is an avid reader---especially murder mysteries that she’s enjoying via her recent birthday gift of a Kindle. She also loves to binge shows on Netflix.

Bob’s career in broadcasting spanned over 57 years and he was most well known as being “The Voice and The Spirit of Holy Cross Athletics.”

Kathryn Hitchings, 88 NORTHBOROUGH – Kathryn Lovette (MacDonald) Hitchings passed peacefully in her sleep on April 27. She was very proud of her 6 loving daughters and son in laws; Susan and Stephen Walcott of Westboro, Priscilla and Bradford Lovejoy of Westboro, Christine Erb and Abdul Alkhatib of Northboro, Jennifer & James Witruke of Portville, NY, Sarah & David Brown of Bellingham, and Amy Carlson of Millbury. Her 17 grandchildren; Jessica Walcott, Amanda Ford, Michael Lovejoy, Jason Lovejoy, Neil Hutt, Emily Chiarella, Hailey Erb, Daniel D’Errico, Melissa Elder, Kathyrn D’Errico, Angus Witruke, Ian Witruke, Allison Palladini, Benjamin Palladini, Josilyn Goodall, Nicholas Goodall, and Christopher Carlson not only provided her much joy but produced 21 additional members in the next generation of her clan; Elijah, Samuel, Riley, Tyler, Emma, Parker, Noah, Adalynn, Sophia, Leona, Tamiris, Milena, Isabelle, Lillian, Julian, Olivia, Chloe, Adrian, Brayden, Alexa, and Jackson.

Kay, Kathy, or Lovette as she was called, grew up in Northboro as a lover of reading and learning. She enjoyed and excelled in school as evidenced by graduating Suma Cum Laude with a BA in Psychology from Framingham State, and earned a Master of Arts Degree in Counseling Psychology from Assumption College. She retired in 1997 from her position as a social worker for the Massachusetts Department of Social Services.

She was a classical pianist causing vibrations in the soul of her listeners. Her abundant talents in music and creativity in art still thrives in her progeny.

Although she was not a member of a church she had a inmost relationship with the Lord and prayed through her poetry. Her verses were published at The Willows, where she resided, as

well as in a few books, and are a source of amazement to her family and friends.

Predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Louis E. Hitchings, she will be laid in her final resting place with him and their infant son; James Neil Hitchings who has been an angel since 1959. A private service will be held on Saturday May 1 at Pickering and Sons Funeral home followed by a graveside memorial at Pine Grove Cemetery then a celebration of life at the home of one of her daughters.

Jennifer M. Driscoll, 48 MILLBURY/NORTHBOROUGH - Jennifer M. (Griffin) Driscoll, 48, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2021 after a short illness.

She leaves behind her loving husband and best friend of 19 years, Kevin T. Driscoll of Millbury; her mother, Helen Griffin of Northborough; her niece and nephews; her mother-in-law, Joan Driscoll of Fitchburg; brother and sisterin laws; close cousins, relatives and friends; and her beloved dog, Sammy. Jennifer was predeceased by her sister, Michelle Griffin Dansereau, and her father, Daniel Griffin.

Dr Sitansu Sekar Mittra, 83 WESTBOROUGH - Dr Sitansu Sekar Mittra passed away on April 25, 2021 after a long illness.

Dr. Mittra was born on Oct. 3, 1937, in Calcutta, India and led a life of great academic success.

Dr. Mittra leaves behind his loving wife, Pranati (Datta) Mittra; his son, Partha and daughter-in-law Claudia of Bronxville, N.Y.; and his other son, Ansuman and daughterin-law Sarah of Medford. He also leaves behind his nephew,

Dev Kumar Roy of Miami, Fla., and his niece, Ashoka Bose of Kolkata, India. Dr. Mittra will be deeply missed by the Bengali community of Massachusetts where Dr. Mittra and his family lived for 43 years.

Paul E. Lirette, 68 NORTHBOROUGH - Paul E. Lirette, 68, a longtime Northborough resident and talented stone mason, passed away peacefully at 11:41 a.m. on April 25, 2021 after a short illness. Paul was the beloved husband of 35 years to Jane (MacKinnon) Lirette and the son of the late Edgar J. and Gertrude (Hall) Lirette.

In addition to his devoted wife Jane, Paul is survived by three children, Paul E. Lirette Jr. of Shrewsbury, Leigha T. Lirette of Boston, and Jackson P. Lirette of Somerville, and his two granddaughters, Tiffany and Kyleigh Lirette. Paul also leaves his four siblings, Carol Bradley, Michael Lirette, Reginald Lirette, and Sherry Bergin.

Stacey Anne Morris, 53 MILLBURY/GRAFTON - Stacey Anne Morris, a long-standing resident of the Open Sky community, died on April 24, 2021 from complications from sickle cell anemia. Stacey was born on Aug. 17, 1967 in Boston.

Love of bowling strikes Northborough teen

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - A family bowling outing five years ago struck a huge interest for Northborough teen Kieran Reeve-Patel. That interest has since grown into a competitive passion for the 16-year-old Northborough resident and sophomore at Clearway School in West Newton.

Kieran’s school is small and doesn’t have its own bowling team, so he sought out alternate ways to compete and joined a bowling league. Along the way, he has met people who have coached him and encouraged him.

“I have found what I am good at and what I enjoy,” he said.

Over the April school break, Kieran took lessons at the Kegel Training Center in Florida.

You need to have confidence in yourself.

I have been up against some very good players, and it is easy to think you will lose before you have played against them. I have surprised myself and won!

He practices a lot, and credits his coaches along the way for all he has learned about the game, and his mother Ruth, who he can usually persuade to drive him to the alley for a two-hour bowling practice session. Currently, he practices and works with coaches twice a week for two hours at Wonderland in New Bedford.

Kieran said a good bowler knows which ball to choose and where to stand. Bowling lane oil patterns are also essential to learn.

“Oil patterns make the bowling balls do unpredictable things to make it difficult to strike,” he said. “You really need to work out what is going to be effective.”

The oil on every lane can be different and the bowler needs to adjust strategies based on the pattern. The bowling ball speed, spin and direction can be affected.

Kieran’s bowling games don’t always go as he hopes, but he stays positive.

“Just because one frame or one game doesn’t go well…you have to keep working at it,” he said. “You need to have confidence in yourself. I have been up against some very good players, and it is easy to think you will lose before you have played against them. I have surprised myself and won!”

He anticipates more participation in tournaments as COVID-19 travel restrictions are lifted. He will be competing this summer at the Teen Masters USA in Detroit, Michigan and Junior Gold Championships in Indianapolis, Indiana.

“I do get nervous, but excited too and have to try to focus on each shot,” he said. “When I make a good shot, strike or spare, it is really satisfying.”

Team finishes season at New England Sports Center

Leach directly recalled that tough blow when further discussing this latest news.

“We never had a time where we weren’t trying to play for something,” he said, at the time looking ahead at three games left on the schedule.

Bruins finish season in Marlborough Their season now complete, the team is entering the offseason and bidding goodbye to the New England Sports Center where it played home games this year due to COVID-19 related activities at its home arena, the Dunkin Donuts Center, in Providence.

Team operation will now soon move out of the NESC as, dating back to January of this year, team owner H. Larue Renfroe, who also owns the New England Sports Center, emphasized that this relocation was temporary.

“The team belongs at the Dunk, where we look forward to returning to next season and beyond,” he said at the time.
