Algonquin junior hosting April fundraiser to benefit Flutie Foundation for Autism

NORTHBOROUGH – April is Autism Acceptance Month and Andrew Roberts, a junior at Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS), wants to dedicate this month to giving back to the autism community. He has organized a month-long fundraiser to benefit the Doug Flutie Jr. Foundation for Autism. Roberts has been part of the organization’s fellowship program since 2018 working as a multimedia journalist, covering various events on behalf of the Foundation. His first assignment was to report on the Flutie-sponsored golfers who competed in the 2018 Special Olympics USA Games in Seattle.

Roberts’ involvement in the organization grew out of his passion for sports journalism and the recognition of the sports blog he started when he was 10 years old, bostonsportsmania.com.

For the seven-year anniversary of his blog, Roberts has designed a new logo that he created in his ARHS digital art class. He is using this new logo for an apparel fundraiser that he has organized to give back to the Flutie Foundation. All prof-

Andrew Roberts wears a hoodie he is selling to raise money for the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism its will be donated directly to the Foundation, which according to its website “helps people and families with autism live life to the fullest.” The Flutie Foundation was founded in 1998 by local football legend, Doug Flutie and his wife Laurie in honor of their son Dougie, who was diagnosed with autism at age three.

The apparel being sold for Roberts’ fundraiser is being manufactured and shipped by Spectrum Designs, a New York based non-profit that employs adults with autism.

As Roberts states in his March 25 Twitter post, “every dollar spent [on this apparel] will go back to the autism community.”

Chalk drawings mark Westborough’s annual ‘kindness week’

WESTBOR OUGH – Chalk drawings outside the youthrun Westborough Sugar Shack were just some of the visual manifestations of the annual Town of Westbor ough Kindness Week, March 21 – March 27. Organized by local group Westborough PHOTO /DAVID BAGDON Connects, Kindness Week ran with daily themes encouraging outreach and connection in a year especially marked by the isolation COVID-19 has brought.

March 24 was “Chalk the Walks” day, bringing three particular Westborough High School students, Rachanna, Priyanka and Tiffany to the Sugar Shack, downtown, where they drew spring themed chalk drawings to mark the occasion.
