That is the goal for 20-year-old Anelise Diamond Merrihew.

She has shared her voice by performing a Anelise Diamond Merrihew variety of songs during her quarantine music sessions on Facetime throughout the pandemic.

She has missed seeing friends and being able to go places. The sessions have helped her feel close to others and have made many people smile during uncertain and dark times.

SHREWSBURY - When COVID-19 took its grip on Massachusetts, nursing homes across the state closed their doors to visitors to keep their residents safe.

Shrewsbury Nursing and Rehabilitation Center was no exception. Their doors officially closed the second week of March 2020, and residents found themselves cut off from the “in-person” time with family and friends which meant so much to them.

WESTBOROUGH - When three longtime members of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Westborough put their heads together to determine how the church could raise funds for miscellaneous projects and support the Westborough community, the Elite Repeats Thrift Shop was reborn.

Diane Barrette, Nancy Carlson and Peggy Yankee agreed that reviving the church’s thrift shop would be a wonderful way to engage the congregation and the community at large, according to Carlson. Elite Repeat sells “gently used items at an appealing price.” However, Carlson said that for individuals and families in “dire straits, we don’t charge them.”

Although the thrift shop has been open since December, donations started coming in last summer. The trio has combed through every item and sorted, organized and priced them. Situated in the church’s basement, shoppers can find clothing, jewelry, household items, furniture, cribs, lamps and more.

Brunello di Montalcino

runello di Montalcino is considered the crown jewel of Italian red wine and has been produced in the vineyards around Montalcino, in the Tuscany wine region, since the 15th century. Montalcino has a warm and dry climate, with the grapes ripening earlier than in other regions. Brunello is made with 100 percent Sangiovese grapes that are known for having thicker skins. This helps produce bold, fruity, spicy, and earthy notes with high tannin and high acidity. The wine is aged in oak casks for at least three years.

Brunello is a perfect accompaniment to a variety of dishes. Red meat tends to bring out the fruity flavors, while Tuscan tomato dishes bring out the herbaceous qualities.

Brunello di Montalcino is an impressive wine to include in a collection and often requires several years for the tannins to soften and the flavors to develop complexity. With 10 or more years of age, Brunello drops the fresh fruit flavors to reveal sweeter notes of dried figs, candied cherries, and hazelnuts. The tannins turn chocolaty and the acidity is succulent.

Goldendoodle brings joy to Shrewsbury nursing home residents Gracie | from page 1

had closed its doors to visitors due to the pandemic.

“I made the decision to get Gracie prior to COVID even happening,” Gauthier pointed out. “It turned out to be the best decision I have ever made.”

When Gracie was introduced to the residents for the first time, it was, said Gauthier, “Love at first sight.”

“The smiles she put on the residents’ faces brought tears to my eyes,” she recalled.

Her presence brings a smile to staff as well, whether it is during “Morning Meeting,” as she shares her toys with department heads and rolls over for belly rubs, or after the meeting, when she greets staff on their morning break, hoping to sneak a snack.

In the afternoon, Gracie makes room-to-room visits with the residents of each nursing unit.

Her daily visits are the highlight of the day for many, her

arrival on nursing units met with a buzz of anticipation from both residents and staff: “Gracie is here!”

Special pals Although Gauthier noted that “Gracie loves everyone and everything,” the goldendoodle does have a special bond with several residents.

In their rooms, she feels free to jump into their beds or onto their laps and snuggle.

Her pals John Goreschak and Marilyn Wedge are the recipients of many such snuggles. When the elevator doors open to John’s floor, Gracie will head directly to his room and hop onto his bed. Marilyn, who refers to Gracie as “My Buddy,” also allows the young dog to climb into her bed for cuddles and kisses.

Edith DeBaggis is another special friend. She has known Gracie since her puppy days and warned Gauthier that the goldendoodle would grow into a big dog. Now, when Gracie

Gracie seems to have an instinctive sense when extra gentleness is required, as with friend and resident Dorothy Senecal, an animal lover who is legally blind. Dorothy says that her visits with Gracie “make her day.”

Most recently, even staff members have been comforted

by Gracie, as she “offered a paw” of support during their COVID-19 vaccinations.

Unconditional love Gauthier is currently exploring options for Gracie to train as a Therapy Dog. She already meets the criteria. While her title would change, her role at Shrewsbury Nursing and Rehabilitation Center would not. But the additional training, once completed, would enable her to also visit other nursing homes and hospitals.

“During the COVID outbreak and pandemic, the thing that was affected the most for our residents was their visitation with family members,” said Gauthier. “[Gracie] provided… support for them in some lonely days… I was amazed [at] the joy she brought…she taught all of us what unconditional love is during this difficult time.”

Westborough to hold third annual Kindness Week March 21-27

WESTBOROUGH – This year, for the third time, the town of Westborough will celebrate Kindness Week. The initiative, to be held Sunday, March 21 through Saturday, March 27, is a collaboration between the nonprofit group Westborough Connects, the Westborough Public Schools and nearly 40 local businesses and organizations.

As it was last year, Kindness Week will be held virtually due to the pandemic. In spite of that, there will be many fun activities for all age groups, according to the co-chairs Kelley Petralia, Laura Cerniglia and Meghan Gavalis.

“Kindness Week is a celebration of the kindness in our community. It is a time to shine a spotlight on the good and encourage people to amplify kindness through their own actions and notice positive things/people around Westborough,” the women noted.

“Kindness Week promotes community bonding around kindness and offers a visual demonstration of the goodness in our community. This aligns with the Westborough Connects mission of building a more connected and kind community where everyone feels like they belong.”

Plans for the fall After celebrating this spring, the group will move the annual Kindness Week celebration to November to coincide with World Kindness Day. “But we really thought it was important to hold one this spring too,” Petralia said. “It has been a long year for everyone – this is a nice way to celebrate kindness again, even if we have to do it virtually.”

“The Public Schools have been a great partner to us in this,” she added. “We received a grant from the Westborough Cultural Council to pay for Ben’s Bells. And the Pastoral Counseling Center and Rotary Club also made donations.”

“We are very mindful of our small business and community organizations too. We didn’t want to overtax them,” Cerniglia noted. “But so many have already stepped up and said they want to be part of this.

They are really galvanized by the idea.”

Kick off event This year’s kick-off will feature a virtual presentation via Zoom by the nonprofit organization, Ben’s Bells on Saturday, March 21 at 1 p.m.

Based in Arizona, the organization was formed by Jeannette Maré’ after the sudden death of her son Ben, just before his third birthday. According to the website, bensbells.org, in the months following his death, Maré and her friends began making ceramic wind chimes in her backyard studio. They then decided to make hundreds more and distribute them as random acts of kindness. Since then, thousands of others have joined the movement, distributing their own bells.

Additional events will include yoga classes, meditation, and giveaways such as brownies at Yummy Mummy and daffodils at Mugford Flowers.

Westborough receives $1.28 million for Flanders Road/West Park Dr. ext. intersection WESTBOROUGH – The town of Westborough was recently notified that it will receive a $1.28 million award from the MassWorks Infrastructure Program that will be used to improve the traffic movements in and out of the Westborough Office Park.

Phases of the project, according to a press release from the state, include extending the current West Park Drive from its current dead end to Flanders Road, which will make it easier for those exiting the office park onto Route 9.

A traffic signal will be installed at the new intersection of Flanders Road and the new West Park Drive Extension.

Additionally, an 8-foot stone dust multi-use trail as part of the Boston-Worcester Air Line Trail (BWALT) will be constructed next to the proposed West Park Drive Extension.

The public portion of the

project, according to the press release, leverages the private portion of the project, which is the extension of the current West Park Drive within the Westborough Office Park which is owned by Carruth Capital LLC. The Westborough Office Park currently has seven existing buildings and one new building under construction totaling 800,000 square feet of office and research/development space. The Massachusetts Environmental Protection Agency has approved up to 930,000 more square feet of space for development. This will increase the developable acreage to 1,730,000 square feet. The entire project has the opportunity to unlock much new private development in the expanded office park, which will create an additional 1,030 new permanent jobs and 870 construction jobs.

Hudson musician and published author is now creating artwork

By Ed Karvoski Jr. Contributing Writer HUDSON – Stephen Beccia of Hudson continues discovering ways to express himself creatively.

As a musician, he has performed with bands as a bassist and vocalPEOPLE &PLACES ist since his teens. As a writer, he authored books and short stories. Now, he’s exhibiting his work as a visual artist.

“Being creative gives me peace of mind,” he shared. “I enjoy creating and giving something to somebody that they can relate to, whether it’s a song, a book or a painting.”

Face the music Growing up in Milford, a 13-year-old Beccia became fascinated with performing music in the 1970s when he saw the heavy metal, glam rock band Kiss on the television show “Don Kirshner’s Rock Concert.”

“I loved the whole theatrics and energy of the act,” he said

of Kiss’ spectacularly costumed antics. “They’re like cartoon characters.”

He and two buddies formed a musical trio. They performed at Milford venues including an elementary school.

“My dad was a selectman in Milford at the time and saw opportunities for us to play,” he

His books are available at online booksellers. He’s currently working on a graphic novel.

“I love spinning a tale,” he noted. “Sometimes, you don’t even realize what you’re writing because there’s an invisible force – a muse – that takes over.”

Painting abstracts His creative juices flowed in yet another direction when he received a Michaels gift card for Christmas in 2017. He stocked up on art supplies including acrylic paints, brushes and canvases.

“I’ve been painting nonstop since that day,” he said. “Now, I have a boatload of paintings.

A lot of artists paint realism; I like to do abstracts. Why paint what exists when you can paint what does not? Meaning, this crazy abstract doesn’t exist until I paint it.”

Beccia creates his artwork at Hudson Art Studios located in the Odds Fellow Building at 14 Main St., Suite 4. His artwork gets exhibited at Vintage Café in Hudson and at the Loading Dock Gallery in Lowell, where he’s a member. He appreciates networking within Lowell’s thriving arts community.

“It’s a cool vibe to be part of an arts scene,” he noted. “Everybody interacts with one another and shares ideas.”

community members need and in what sizes. When the bags are ready, O’Neil-Welch picks them up from St. Stephen’s and delivers them to people in need in Westborough.

“Elite Repeats provides relief in many wonderful ways while respecting the privacy and dignity of those in need. The volunteers are so dedicated and are true humanitarians who serve from the heart. WYFS is in great support of the mission they embrace,” said O’Neil-Welch.

Mary Taber is a Westborough-based social worker for the Forbes Kirkside Foundation, which provides support for families in need in Westborough.

Taber is “delighted that [the shop] is there. It’s needed. We all have stuff in our basements that someone else can use,” she said.

In fact, Taber, in addition to Carlson and O’Neil-Welch as well as Nan Ford at St. Luke’s and Terry Gavin of the nonprofit In Your Shoes, all serve as conduits between community members in need and Elite Repeats. When they come across an individual or family in need, they may refer them to the shop - and even deliver items. “We are known to people who call us to pass along items,” Taber said.

How you can help While the amount of items sold in the thrift shop is not sparse, Barrette said that they’re “accepting donations of gently used items that anyone might buy in a thrift shop.” The kids section has toys, clothing and

The final word Carlson said that part of

the thrift shop’s initiative is to raise funds for things the parish wants to do around the church.

“The other part of the mission is to reach out to people and let them know we’re here.

We just want to help people,” she said.

program for students ages 18-22 with special abilities and learning differences. It is designed to provide the training necessary for successful supported employment and independent living.

She has loved to sing for as long as she can remember. She has always been surrounded by music and signing. Her mother Lori Diamond and Diamond’s music and life partner Fred Abatelli are professional singers and musicians with their band Fate’s Landing.

Fans from all over the world The quarantine sessions were done on a whim as an effort for Diamond to offer Anelise enrichment. Anelise, Diamond and Abatelli all perform and the feedback has been amazing.

“We were all surprised at the reactions,” Anelise said.

“Our first video of ‘What a Wonderful Life’ has over 11 million views! I have gotten really nice notes from people all over the world saying how happy they are when they see me singing. I even have new friends and pen pals.”

Sharing her love of music with others She is no stranger for doing amazing things. She was instrumental in forming the ARHS Unified Singing Club in 2017.

“I didn’t think it was fair that my school didn’t have any music clubs that didn’t have auditions needed,” she said. “I wanted to change that and thought everyone should be included just because they love music.”

The Club has met weekly through the shutdowns and have continued to do so via Zoom to keep social and keep singing.

Anelise sings with the Northborough Area Community Chorus, which has an upcoming virtual concert scheduled for the spring. She will be a part of the opening act for Catie Curtis on Saturday, March 20 for a virtual concert, along with Diamond and Abatelli. She will also be a special guest at a live outdoor concert at Douglas Orchard on Saturday, July 31 with Fate’s Landing.

Although she enjoys percussion and is learning to play piano, she said that her “voice is my main instrument.”

She enjoys a wide variety of music genres and performers, like Adele, Alison Krauss, Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and Dolly Parton.

“I really like strong and unique voices,” Anelise said.

When she is not singing, she loves crafts, cooking, being with friends, trying new kinds of food, meeting new people and exploring new places. She participates in the DECA club and serves as a Best Buddies officer at school.

Anelise will continue to share her music with the world to brighten people’s day.

Her motto is to “keep following your dreams, enjoy each moment, do what you love and follow your passion.”

Shrewsbury activists demonstrate for climate awareness

SHREWSBURY – A small group of activists representing Emergency Everywhere Shrewsbury participated in a “standout” in the town center Feb. 26 to bring awareness to what they call a “Climate Emergency.” The group is part of a larger organization, Extinction Rebellion Massachusetts.

According to one member, Diane Jones, the group hopes to get enough signatures for a petition that would urge the town to declare a climate emergency. If approved, that petition would then appear on the warrant for a future Town Meeting.

Standouts are scheduled to take place every other Friday from 3:30 – 5 p.m., starting March 12.

New owner for Café Noir in Shrewsbury receives common victualer license

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – After 11 years as part of Bean Counter Bakery Café organization, the popular Café Noir located at 307 Grafton Street was sold to Charles Carroll, owner of Café Edesia in Gardner, Mass. several weeks ago.

On Feb. 23 Carroll appeared before the Board of Selectmen in a public hearing on the matter of a common victualer license.

He said, “We are looking to reopen that [Café Noir] and keep it going as an existing business.”

Carroll plans to keep the establishment essentially the same, with similar hours, and as COVID-19 conditions improve, operating hours will be expanded accordingly.

Selectman Maurice DePalo suggested building in extra hours on the license to accommodate flexibility.

Initial operating hours will be Monday to Saturday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday, 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The Bean Counter Bakery Café, under the ownership of Alice Lombardi, has other locations, one in Shrewsbury and two in Worcester.

There was no public comment and the Selectmen unanimously granted the license to Carroll who will keep the board posted as to when Café Noir will reopen.

A ‘Night in the Cold’ successful in raising awareness for issue of homelessness

WESTBOROUGH - After spending more than 24 hours starting Feb. 27 outside in the elements, John Bogaert and Scott Henderson were more than happy to wrap it up and head back to their warm houses, thanking everyone who helped make their fundraiser, A Night in the Cold, a huge success.

“After this very turbulent year on so many levels, the compassion, caring, love and empathy that people have shown has completely restored my faith in humanity,” Bogaert said.

Because everything they needed was donated, 100% of the funds collected will go directly to the Massachusetts Coalition for the Homeless. As of this writing, the amount was $30,635.

“But it was a little bit real, too. It was uncomfortable and I got little sleep, and in a small way, it was a hardship that helped me briefly live the expe-

rience,” said Henderson.

Starting out early on the cold and rainy Saturday morning, the men were already chilled by the time they crawled into their cardboard boxes around midnight. They quickly learned that they had to wrap their blankets tightly around them and not move for fear of creating a gap that would let body heat out and more cold, damp air in. The lights from the 24-

hour gas station and the sound of cars going by throughout the night only made it that much harder to get any rest.

“Freezing temps combined with rain or dampness can be a deadly combination without rain gear or warm clothing.

We had both, and it was still a struggle to get any sleep. I estimate we got about 3 hours of very restless sleep,” explained Bogaert.

The men hope that getting people to feel more comfortable in talking about the issue will further raise awareness and prompt other fundraising events to help alleviate the suffering.

A sobering takeaway Tony, currently experiencing homelessness in Worcester, was a sobering source of information to the men with regard to what life holds for those in this dire situation. Through conversations with him, it became apparent that it’s not just the lack of a warm bed or meal on a regular basis that is heartbreaking.

Bogaert commented, “My biggest takeaway was when I learned that there is zero entertainment in these people’s lives.

And by entertainment, I mean anything that makes you happy.

Survival mode puts everything else on hold, funding wise and time wise.”

Spreading the word Bringing the widespread dilemma of homelessness into the public eye was the objective of the overnight event. Both men reported that countless people were willing to share stories about their own acquaintances, friends, or even family members who have experienced homelessness.

“The event created a forum for people to tell me their own stories,” explained Henderson, “and it brought home for me what a widespread problem homelessness is, and closer to my own bubble than I had realized.”

WESTBOROUGH – Nelson Ball is an esteemed businessman and dedicated volunteer in Westborough. He is also considered the town’s “Mr. Pickleball!”

Thanks to his leadership, the town now has eight pickleball courts located across from Lake Chauncy, that are enjoyed year-round by players of all ages.

(During the winter months, volunteers clean snow and ice off the courts so games can ensue.)

On March 3, Ball’s friends and fans gathered at the courts to surprise him with a small party in honor of his 90th birthday. After a rousing singing of “Happy Birthday,” Ball did what he loves best – continued playing his favorite game.

Shrewsbury Public Library to recognize local leaders as part of Women’s History Month

Why recognizing women is vital “As a female serving in an elected position, I was happy to participate in this project. It’s important for girls and women to know that their voices are needed in leadership roles,” Casavant shared.

“It’s important to celebrate Women’s History Month because women are vital to our society and have worked and contribute so much to it but are often overlooked in their achievements,” Drotar said.

“We must spotlight women to inspire, encourage, and educate young boys and girls and to break down preconceived societal gender barriers.”

“I’m so grateful to the women who participated in the project and would love to share their voices as far as possible,” she added.

SHREWSBURY – March is Women’s History Month.

As such, the Shrewsbury Public Library will be featuring a new video series, “Community Voices: Women’s History Month”, that will highlight prominent local women leaders.

The project’s mission The intent of the project is to recognize women while bringing the community together. The concept began as a children’s program but after “further conversation,” library director Priya Rathnam and Sonja Drotar, head of children’s services, felt it would appeal to the entire community.

The participants Library staff selected women who they believed families would be familiar with and who hold positive leadership roles in the community. They are Shrewsbury’s own Lt. Gov. Karyn Polito, State Rep. Hannah E. Kane (R-Shrewsbury), Board of Selectmen Chair Beth Casavant, Library Director Priya Rathnam, local author April Jones Prince, community organizer Missy Hollenback, Al Hamra Academy principal Noor Ali, and local Realtor and library supporter Arathi Cowlagi.

When asked what it meant to be asked to participate, Ali replied, “Representing women of the Shrewsbury community for this project holds great meaning to me both personally and professionally.”

REGION - Eastern Massachusetts Senior Softball (EMASS) is opening its annual registration campaign for slow-pitch softball players age 50 and over.

With over 400 members, the league attracts players from towns across Eastern Massachusetts with games played on fields in Wayland, Medfield, Ashland and Framingham. The EMASS season opens in May with 18 weeks of regular season games scheduled through Labor Day and year-end playoffs completed in early October.

“We played ball safely in 2020 and we will do it again in 2021,” said Walker Royce, Commissioner of EMASS. “Our players will do whatever it takes to get out on the field with their teammates and we will adjust the COVID protocols we used successfully last year to ensure the safety of our members in the 2021 season.”

After COVID-19 delayed last year’s season opening until July, EMASS salvaged a welcome half-season in its Saturday divisions and delivered a full 36-game season in the weekday divisions by playing twice a week. With facial coverings, social distancing and other common sense guidelines, EMASS played throughout the summer and fall of 2020 without any mem-

ber testing positive.

EMASS will open the 2021 season as soon as the towns give the go-ahead. After the experience with pandemic play in 2020, the league knows how to get its COVID-19 protocols approved with town officials to ensure a safe environment.

“Player feedback in 2020 was exceptional and we will build on that experience to deliver a great Senior Softball season in 2021 as well,” said Royce.

Understanding the MassHealth Five-Year Look Back

Miller hen a person enters a nursing home on a long-term basis in Massachusetts, there are generally three ways to pay for their care: from their private funds, from a combination of private funds and long-term care insurance, or by applying for Medicaid benefits (MassHealth). Nursing homes typically charge $12,000-$15,000 per month, so most people run out of private funds quickly. If MassHealth is the only option to fund nursing home care, the applicant must complete the infamous MassHealth Long-Term Care application.

During the application process, MassHealth may request up to five years of financial records for all assets.

MassHealth routinely requests additional information explaining all large transactions, or patterns of deposits or withdrawals for smaller transactions. If a property has been sold in the past five years, proof must be provided that the applicant received fair market value for the sale. For those who are concerned about the need for nursing home care in the near future, it is prudent to save receipts for all large transactions and avoid gifting, unless it falls under one of the MassHealth transfer exceptions and is clearly documented.

For unmarried applicants to be financially eligible for MassHealth, their assets must have been reduced below $2,000. In 2020, for a married applicant who has a spouse living in the community, the couple’s total assets must be reduced below $130,640. It is not enough simply to show current bank statement(s) with a combined balance below the asset limit. The

By Cindy Zomar Education Coordinator MARLBOROUGH – Marlborough High School Student Aiden Grocki has secured a spot for his artwork, titled ‘Self Identities,’ in the 2021 Massachusetts Amazing Emerging Artists Recognition Juried Exhibit, Superintendent Mike Bergeron told the School Committee, late last month.

Inspired by learning in his AP 2D Art and Design course, Grocki’s piece combines a variety of artistic mediums to depict himself holding his cat, “Poppy.”

“I was able to combine a lot of mediums and even did some digital layering,” he said in a recent interview. “I am pretty excited to get it into the exhibit.”

Blind Juried Exhibit A blind juried art exhibit is different from an art fair at a library or local school in that a panel of ‘jurors’ pre-judge applications to see if they are worthy of entry.

Perfecting various techniques pays off Grocki, currently a junior at MHS, admitted he spent much of last summer perfecting his art techniques. He experimented with combinations of colored pencil, white charcoal, gesso, and watched YouTube videos on various artistic styles.

His mother, an art teacher in Swampscott, also tutored him on using Photoshop for photo editing.

School Committee develops plan focused on racial equity

By Susan Gonsalves Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH – The Westborough school community members want an anti-bias mindset to become second nature across the district.

The School Committee on Feb. 24 discussed development of a strategic plan addressing issues of equity, racism and cultural competency.

Superintendent Amber Bock described the work done to date, calling the plan “a living document,” adding, “Ideas will continue to flow into it as we work together.”

One priority is to expand the diversity of its workforce. Students should be able to see themselves in those that educate them, she said.

Racial breakdown provided Assistant Superintendent Daniel Mayer gave a presentation outlining the racial breakdown of students and faculty in Westborough as well as the state as a whole.

The corresponding breakdown for faculty/staff is as follows: 93 percent white; 3.39 percent Asian; 2.35 percent Hispanic; and 1.17 percent African American.

Mayer said that in an ideal world, the populations would match up. However, “There’s a significant difference from 10 years ago, but we’re not where we need to be,” he noted.

He pointed out that the gap

at the state level is wider.

For example, 56 percent of the student population is white versus 88.94 of faculty.

In Massachusetts, 22 percent of students are Hispanic, while the faculty rate is 4.55 percent.

Also, the difference is 9.3 percent African American

students versus 4.29 percent for educators.

Bock talked about forming partnerships with local colleges and universities and participating in job fairs to become more proactive about seeking employees of color.

Zero-tolerance policy supported Student representative Kyla Kamugu noted that there should be a zero-tolerance policy and consequences for the micro and macro aggressions people of color experience. She said that in the future, if there is a director of diversity shared with the town, that individual should be a person of color

so he/she can understand first-hand what students in those populations are facing.

School Committee member Raghu Nandan said there should be a clear outlet where students can go and feel comfortable talking about problems. He said that statements like, “This behavior won’t be tolerated,” must be followed up with action.

School Committee member Lisa Edinberg urged administrators to speed up the process, noting, “There’s a lot of work to do to get where we want to be.”

Algonquin’s goal is 80 percent student participation with COVID pool screening program

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH/SOUTHBOROUGH-The Northborough Southborough Public Schools began their weekly COVID-19 pool screening program for students. The start has been slow and the District is looking for a much higher percentage of participation moving forward.

Shrewsbury High School celebrates Black History month with mural

SHREWSBURY – Last month, as Black History Month drew to a close, Shrewsbury High School found a special way to mark the occasion.

The Black History Committee created a special installation of a periodic table recognizing the contributions to society by 90 notable and historical Black artists, scientists, authors, actors, activists, athletes, musicians, entrepreneurs and politicians.

Science teacher Jill Carter was inspired, she said, when she saw a TikTok presentation of a similar project in Lakeland, Fla. “After a little bit of investigating, that teacher on TikTok was very kind to share the template out for free and we took it and played around with it to make it work or us,” Carter explained.

Both Carter and Lawlor expressed that they learned so much about people they had never heard of before.

“It felt really good as teachers to be doing something outside our classroom bubble in this crazy COVID-19 time and students were walking by and commenting on it. It was really nice to be out there interacting with students and other teachers and learning new things as we put it up,” Carter reflected.

“We are so excited and everyone at Shrewsbury High School, it seems, are getting on board to support Black History Month,” Lawlor said.

The mission of the Black History Committee is “to broaden the world view of the student body at Shrewsbury High School through the exploration and analysis of Black history, a celebration of Black culture, and social activism for racial justice. We seek to recognize the contributions of African Americans to the history of the United States, and to remind students that Black history is not just about race — it is about who we are as a nation, where we have come from, and where we are going.”

Obituaries Eleanor C. McKeever, 83 WESTBOROUGH - Eleanor C. McKeever, 83, of Westborough, passed away peacefully on Feb. 26, 2021 at the Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester.

She was the wife of the late Dr. John McKeever.

Eleanor is survived by five children, Ann Fenlason and her husband Peter of Barre, Patrick McKeever of Harrisville, R.I., Marjorie McDonald of Grafton, John McKeever of Worcester, and Robert McKeever of Westborough; six grandchildren, Lindsay Burke (Kevin), Katherine McGee (Joseph), Carl McKeever (Megan), Sean McKeever (Amanda), James McDonald and Benjamin McDonald; five great-grandchildren, Lauryn, Dylan, Autumn, Riley, and Mya; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by a sister, Shirley Snow, and a brother, Robert Casey.

Her funeral Mass was celebrated March 2 at St. Luke the Evangelist Church of Westborough, with burial at St. Luke’s Cemetery.

Mary G. Baskwoski, 98 GRAFTON - Mary Gloria (Valladoa) Baskowski, late of Grafton, passed peacefully from this earth on the starry, clear night of Feb. 24, 2021, surrounded by several of her children and grandchildren.

She leaves a sister, Connie Gaucher of Fairhaven; sons Joseph and his wife Karen Shaw of Holliston, Stephen and his wife Carolyn of Gill, and Richard and his wif, Janet of Brookfield; daughter-in-law Anne Baskowski of Grafton; daughters Gloria Paradiso and her partner Wayne Haddad, Ann Gurney, and Carol Dauphinais and husband Craig, all of Grafton; 19 grandchildren; and three greatgrandchildren. A funeral Mass for Mary was held March 6 at St. James Catholic Church in South Grafton, withburial beside her beloved Joe at Fairview Cemetery in South Grafton.

Susan G. Fleming, 70 GRAFTON - Susan G. (Griffin) Fleming, 70, passed away peacefully at her home on Feb. 24, 2021 after a courageous battle with cancer.

She was predeceased by her parents, Warren E. Griffin and Addie Delphine Griffin, also from Grafton.

She leaves behind her longtime partner and love of 30 years, Jim; her two children, Jonathan M. Fleming of Worcester and Valery S. Fleming of Worcester; her one and only grandson, Maxwell D. Magliaro; her brother, Roger Griffin and wife Patty and their children Heather Stevens and Chris Griffin; and extended cousins and relatives. Her live-in-aid, Martha, who cared for her extensively, will always have a place in our hearts.

Henry Buswell Jr., 88 WESTBOROUGH - Henry W. Buswell, 88, of Westborough, passed away just after midnight on Feb. 22, 2021 in his sleep at UMass Memorial. Henry was born in Pawtucket, R.I., to the late Henry W. Buswell Sr. and his wife Noella Doyle Buswell.

Henry was predeceased by his parents; his daughter. Muriel; and his second wife. Jeannine. He is survived by his first wife. Rose France; and their children: his son. Henry, and his wife Laurence, their children Alice and Mickael; his son. Lloyd;

and his daughter, Marian, her husband Francois, and Marian’s children Nicolas and Fiona.

Corliss L. Loomer, 89 SHREWSBURY - Corliss L. (Vaughn) Loomer, 89, former secretary for the Town of Shrewsbury, died peacefully on Feb. 28, 2021. Born and raised in Lowell, daughter of the late Ashton and Mabel (Clauson) Vaughn. She was the devoted wife of Sumner W. “Sonny” Loomer, who passed in 2006.

Corliss was the loving mother of Scott B. Loomer and his wife Patricia of Sandwich and the late Steven A, Loomer; motherin-law of Deborah Loomer of Gill; grandmother of Ashley Rollins and Jessica Alger, both of Fitchburg, Brady Loomer of Southborough, and Ericka Glebocki of Manchester, Conn.; great-grandmother of five beautiful great-grandchildren; and is also survived by her sister, Karen Riberdy of Greenville, R.I., as well as nieces and nephews and many special friends and the wonderful, caring staff at Briarwood and Knollwood, including Donna Prescott, her friend and caregiver.

A graveside service was held March 5 at the Mountain View Cemetery of Shrewsbury. The Britton-Shrewsbury Funeral Home assisted with arrangements.

Albert A. Rogers, 96 SHREWSBURY - Albert A. Rogers (formerly Rojcewicz), 96, of Shrewsbury and St. Martin, formerly a longtime resident of Northborough, died on March 1, 2021. Albert was a proud and decorated World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force.

He leaves his wife of 73 years, Adelaide (Staplin) Rogers; a son, Albert Rogers II of Northborough; and three grandchildren, Jill Becker-Witherell of Louisville, Ky., John Anthony Becker of West Boylston, and Albert Rogers III of New Hampshire.

In either case, you deal with market perception. If the market perceives a house as wildly overpriced, the house may be avoided by buyers. It’s the same with an underpriced house, although the bargain hunters and flippers will come out in droves.

If an aggressively priced (high priced) house does get an offer, the type of financing becomes important. I jokingly say banks really don’t want to give out money and that’s why getting a mortgage is so challenging. I tell this to buyers to telegraph it’s a bit of a game, and to win the game they need to respond quickly to an almost neverending series of mortgage underwriter questions. And often answers create more questions…so buyers need to be in the game for a bit.

the “full financial picture,” they also want to understand what the property is worth.

The bank or mortgage company hires an appraiser to visit the property, and other comparable properties, to determine is the sales price of the home is reflective of the market. When the appraiser determines a property is valued substantially below the sale price, this “appraisal issue” ends up causing someone to make up the gap for the deal to go forward. Sometimes this means the buyer needs to kick in cash (“Hi Mom and Dad, it’s been a while, can we talk?”), or the seller must drop the price. If this doesn’t happen the property has to go back on market with frustrated buyers and sellers.

Of course this is avoided if the buyer brings cash – no bank means no appraisal.

We b e l i e v e t h e b e s t strategy is to price the house correctly from the beginning.

We look at all the automated systems (Zillow, Redfin, Realtor, Homesnap) and a few used solely by Realtors and appraisers. We call these the system values. Then we look at the numbers as an appraiser

might….we call these the human values. Systems work solely based on publicly available data, and many times have errors leading to erroneous values (why is it so hard to keep track of rooms, especially bathrooms? Perhaps a better question is how did that bathroom “appear?”)

A combination of automation and humans looking at the market often leads to a great starting value.

If you see an otherwise fine house sitting on the market a long time check the price histor y...the owner may have overpriced the house, scared people away, and is now lowering price to drive demand back. Sadly, they may end up selling for less than properly pricing from the beginning.
