Plackowski one of just over 40,000 other volunteers for phase three large scale trial

By Dakota Antelman Contributing Writer HUDSON - Struggling through an unprecedented semester of teaching, Hudson High School educator Amy Plackowski is also playing a small role in shepherding a coronavirus vaccine across its regulatory finish line.

Plackowski has volunteered for a phase three large scale trial of a vaccine from drug companies Pfizer and BioNTech. She’s one of just over 40,000 other volunteers in this position. And she’s committed to demystifying this entire process by simply talking about her experience.

“People don’t have a recognition that the people involved in these trials are regular everyday people,” Plackowski said in a recent interview. “...

We’re all doing it because we believe in it.”

The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine started testing back in May. It expanded to an initial round of large scale trials in June before then adding a further batch of volunteers in September. That’s Vaccine | 23

To the Editor: On behalf of the men and women of the Shrewsbury Police Department I would like to say thank you to the Shrewsbury community for approving the construction of a new Public Safety building and radio system.

The new facility once completed, will have a modem dispatch center and radio system that meets the to the current standards for emergency communication centers. It will also have a modem training and education facility to better train, equip and prepare our officers to respond as a 21st century department. The new facility will allow for better interaction with the public and include spaces for the public to use to enhance the department’s community policing philosophy. It will support the department’s vision to be fully engaged with our community to co-produce public safety that reduces crime and improves quality of life.

I am very proud of the Shrewsbury Police Department and the work they do to provide you with the best professional law enforcement services possible. It gives me great pride to write this letter and express how grateful and appreciative we are to serve such a supportive community. On behalf of the entire department I extend our heartfelt thank you.

Many employers do look at social media accounts as part of the hiring process, so he advised to take the time to keep it updated, use a professional photo and look like a CEO. While out of work, use the downtime to fulfill a significant personal project.

“A hiring manager will get

to see another dimension of what you are like,” Warniers said.

He made the analogy between a performer and a job seeker.

“In reality, you are auditioning for the role you want to play,” he said. “What does it take to get the part? Think of yourself as an effective solution to an employer’s problem.”

He also warned to never joke or apologize about being older.

“Own your wisdom and accomplishments,” Warniers said. “Be the person you know you can be.”

Library Reference & Adult Services Assistant Eric Wang said the groups have been

on the smaller side, but the feedback received from participants has been positive as they are learning something new from the guest speaker.

The next session will be scheduled in December and some proposed topics include strategies for sustaining morale during a job search, detailed LinkedIn guidance and personal branding.

Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2010, the retired ICU nurse has faced the disease head-on, continuing to live life to the fullest, enjoying long walks, spending time with her three grandchildren, and taking boxing classes for Parkinson’s patients.

NORTHBOROUGH - The Northborough Library has been offering its free Job Seekers Program since July. The program offers a networking and information platform for those looking for employment.

Virtual sessions have included a presentation from an expert, who shares tips on a successful job search, as well as the opportunity for attendees to ask questions and connect with one another. Ongoing services and resources, including proofreading resumes and cover letters, and printing of job related documents are also offered.

On Nov. 16, Randall Warniers presented “Make Age Invisible” and offered key points for the more mature job seeker to keep in mind. He is a communications and design consultant.

During the pandemic, many companies have closed or have had to layoff or furlough employees. This has resulted in people searching for a new job, when they might have thought they were in a job until retirement.

Warniers explored some typical assumptions that employers may have about older applicants, such as a lack of energy, out of date skills set, and the expectation of a high salary.

He said it’s more old behavior that can negatively impact the hiring process rather than age discrimination.

To help with making age more invisible, he suggests

communicating enthusiasm and energy; speaking clearly; embracing technology changes, products and development; and making sure what you wear is your best representation.

Warniers advised learning the new tools of a modern workplace, such as shared apps and cloud services. Many online certification courses are available, or even a YouTube how to video can be helpful.

It is also important to expand your network and know how to have a purposeful conversation. Participating in groups, such as the Job Seekers Program, and social media platforms, like LinkedIn, are all

The Raiano family has worked tirelessly to support the Foundation, with husband Robert, three daughters (Kelly, Bridget and Megan) and grandson Daniel each choosing to participate in various 5K events or Race for the Cure bicycling outings, and even hosting two Putt Putt for Parkinson’s mini-golf events. Finding a Parkinson’s cure has become a family crusade.

Second annual Light the Common promises to be spectacular and joyful

SHREWSBURY – This December the Shrewsbury Town Center Association (STCA) will present the second annual Light the Common display, which organizers said will be “bigger and brighter” than last year’s inaugural event.

The initial date the lights first go on is not being made public, due to the pandemic.

“2020 has been a year of great challenges. Last year, the first annual Light the Common was a great success and so we wanted to expand this year’s display to lift spirits and bring joy to people of all ages,” reflected Moira Miller, STCA vice-president.

“The STCA thought it was essential to acknowledge that 2020 has been a difficult year for many in our community,” agreed STCA President Maribeth Lynch. “By lighting up the Common, we symbolically go from darkness to light.”

Marlborough City Council approves tax break for proposed CA biotech company

By Vicki Greene Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH – As Marlborough seeks to grow its Life Sciences base that includes major companies Hologic, Sunovion and Boston Scientific, the City Council Nov, 16 voted 9-2 to approve a Tax Increment Financing exemption (TIF) to Revance Therapeutics, Inc. and BH GRP TCAM Owner LLC seeking to build/lease its first facility outside of California.

Headquartered in Newark, Calif. with 430 employees, Revance Therapeutics, Inc. develops products used for aesthetics (including cosmetic fillers and injectables) and other therapeutics.

Company representatives started talks with Mayor Arthur Vigeant and Meredith Harris, executive director of the Marlborough Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) at the end of August about plans to invest “approximately “$115 million in building improvements and capital investment” for a 79,000 square foot building and parking facilities at lots 110, 110, 250 and 350 Campus Drive.

The company plans to hire 76 full-time, on-site employees by 2025 from Marlborough and surrounding communities. The number would increase as construction is completed, equipment is installed, government approvals are received, and business ramps up.

Councilors Christian Dumais and Samantha Perlman voted in opposition to the TIF agreement and expressed concern about the timing of the request.

“This is challenging during a pandemic when we should be supporting small businesses that are struggling,” Perlman said.

During a Nov. 9 meeting of the Council’s Finance Committee, Dumais said he was really “struggling” with this vote due to the pandemic and economic downturn.

“Obviously now that we had to lay off municipal employees, people are having difficulties paying their bills and their taxes,” he said. “Numerous small business (owners) like myself are on the verge of shutting down.”

In a letter to Mayor Arthur Vigeant, Brian Blagg, Revance Therapeutics vice president of Engineering, Facilities, EH

& S Supply Chain, stated they were looking to select a location where they could “hire and retain exceptional talent” and one that had “lower operating costs and a stable and businessfriendly environment with an improved tax structure.”

Vigeant told the Committee the company was choosing between Marlborough and Northborough and that North-

borough has a single tax rate which results in much lower commercial tax bills.

“Our commercial tax rate (is higher but) allows us to keep residential rates down,” he explained. “The question is, does the Council want a new building to come down there and have additional tax revenue coming in to offset what we charge our residents and I

don’t want to mislead anyone, there is nothing coming out of the pockets of any resident of this city (because of this tax exemption).”

Several councilors discussed the long-term benefit of bringing in businesses with employees that will hopefully frequent Marlborough shops and restaurants, particularly at this difficult economic time.

“This is going to be a home run and I think we’re probably going to be the envy of other towns,” Councilor Don Landers said.

Councilor Mark Oram echoed that sentiment and added “the more biotech we can attract the better we’ll all be.”

The TIF agreement goes through the state and is managed by the MEDC

Curtiss P-40B Warhawk

HUDSON - The last fully restored flying fighter that survived the attack on Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941 has arrived at the American Heritage Museum and will be on display for the public to view.

This Curtiss P-40B Warhawk was stationed that day at Wheeler Field in Oahu, Hawaii, but amazingly suffered no damage during the Japanese attack. On Jan. 24, 1942, in another ironic twist of fate, with only nine months of service and 56 hours of flight time, the plane spun out of control during a routine training flight. The pilot, Lt. Kenneth Wayne Sprankle, was unable to recover from the spin, crashing into the side of a mountain. The crash occurred in an inaccessible area of the island.

In 1985, the Warhawk’s remains were “rediscovered.” After some preliminary investigation, it was determined the air frame was not severely damaged and if it could be removed was restorable. Some parts were recovered during 1985. A second recovery mission in 1989 salvaged the rest of the air frame. A long restoration ensued through several organizations eventually moving to the Collings Foundation where it was meticulously restored back to its original flying configuration.

Festival of Trees to be held Dec. 5 in Marlborough MARLBOROUGH - On Saturday, Dec. 5, between the hours of 2-6 p.m., the Boys & Girls Clubs of MetroWest will be hosting their annual Festival of Trees outside of the Marlborough Clubhouse at 169 Pleasant St. This is a free event that is open to the public and a great winter activity for the whole family.

Unlike years prior, this year’s Festival of Trees will take on a “drive-thru” style.

Due to theCOVID-19 pandemic, the Clubs are taking all precautions to ensure that this is a safe and socially distant event.

The festival will still feature a brilliant display of hand-decorated trees. Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in the ever-popular tree raffle. The sea of Christmas trees, beautifully decorated and sponsored by local businesses in the MetroWest area, will be on display and raffled off to attendees. All tree raffle proceeds will benefit the kids at the Boys & Girls Clubs of MetroWest.

A special thank you to first responders NORTHBOROUGH - On a rainy and dreary Monday afternoon, Nov. 23, the Koopman family of Hays Funeral Home, along with the help of Jim Bruce of Walkin’ the Dog hotdogs, showed their appreciation to local police, fire and DPW workers by offering them a variety of specialty gourmet dogs, chips and soft drinks for lunch.

Jeff Koopman said this was a small way to recognize the dedication of Northborough’s first responders and those who care for the town, and to let them know their long hours are not taken for granted.

Jim Bruce is a native of Northborough, a retired Northborough Police Dept. sergeant, and now as proprietor of Walkin’ the Dog hotdogs, was proud to partner with the Koopman family and the funeral home in this endeavor.

“A funeral home is an integral part of a community and considered essential and critical support. Their services are there, 24/7/365. We are pleased to partner alongside the Koopman family as they proactively recognize the professionals within Northborough’s own support infrastructure,” he said.

Marlborough’s electric trolleys were a key mass transit system a century ago

MARLBOROUGH - A century ago, the city of Marlborough had an arguably more robust public transit system than it does today. It was possible to travel south to the Southborough border, north to Hudson, and east and west across the city on Main Street, all thanks to the Marlborough Street Railway Company. Electric trolleys, also known as streetcars, were a common mode of conveyance in numerous cities in the United States beginning in the 1880s. By 1895 the country had nearly 900 trolley companies running on over 10,000 miles of track.

It was possible to travel to additional destinations outside Marlborough using other trolley companies. The Marlborough and Westborough Street Railway ran from North Grafton, Westborough and Southborough to Marlborough, providing transportation to Westborough’s Lake Chauncy,

which had an amusement park and dance pavilion, and the state hospital. The Worcester and Marlborough Street Railway also had a trolley line that ran from Marlborough westward through Northborough and Shrewsbury to Worcester.

The Marlborough Street Railway Company began running electric trolley cars in 1889, after a brief period where they were horse-drawn.

“Sam Boyd, a prominent shoe manufacturer and entrepreneur, wanted to have the first electric trolley system in the country,” said Bob Kane, vice president of the Marlborough Historical Society. Marlborough’s wasn’t the first, but it was one of the early electric systems.

“Boyd started the trolley company to carry his shoe workers around the city,” explained Kane. “He didn’t start it to make money initially, but to help his factories and as a convenience for his workers so they could easily get to work on time and even go home for lunch.”

The fare was generally five cents, about $1.40 in today’s dollars. The trolley system originally had switches to allow cars approaching each other to turn off to the side, but it later had two sets of rails so trolley cars going in opposite directions could pass each other.

The Marlborough Street Railway Company operated as a single system with other trolley companies in Framingham and Southborough.

Combined, they had 22 miles of track and ran 16 closed and 22 open passenger cars, seven snowplows, and four work cars. The Marlborough Street Railway’s trolley barn, or car house, and repair shop were located south of downtown on Maple Street, near the intersection with Valley Street. A brick power station was located next to the trolley barn.

The Marlborough Street Railway was brought down at least partially by three serious accidents that cost the company a lot of money. It was placed into receivership in 1902, and the following year its assets and properties were sold. Soon

“But when buses took over they didn’t do all of the routes the trolleys did,” said Kane. Some of the old trolley cars lived on for a time, purchased cheap after they had been junked, and were converted into small diners.

The larger regional companies like this one continued to operate successfully for the next 20 years or so, but it went into receivership itself in 1925, and was reborn in 1927 as the Boston, Worcester and New York Street Railway. But private automobiles were becoming more common, decreasing the demand for trolley service.

Some historical accounts believe the automobile, tire, and oil companies also made a concerted effort to drive the electric trolley companies out of business to increase the market for their products. Between 1925 and 1928, all of the trolley

Girl Scouts host successful food drive with Al’s Brodeur’s Auto Body

By Janice Elizabeth Berte Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH – Marlborough Girl Scouts teamed up with Al Brodeur’s Auto Body last month to host a successful food drive to benefit the city’s food pantry, the Community Cupboard.

Residents drove up at Brodeur’s and then Service Unit Coordinator Bonny Goldberg retrieved the groceries out of people’s trunks along with Membership Coordinator, Kyla Leconti.

“We normally put door hangers on residents homes to notify them of the food drive, but this year we had to create a system where there would be no contact for the people dropping off the food,” Goldberg said.

Molly Nesbitt, owner of Brodeur’s Auto Body, said, “Our property here on South Street can handle the many vehicles that will be donating food, and then be delivered to the Marlborough Community Cupboard.”

The circular driveway allowed the cars to seamlessly navigate around the lot to make for a productive and safe event. The drive started at 9 a.m. and within minutes, bags and bags of food were flowing into the parking area keeping helpers busy.

Teresa Martinez, (volunteer), along with her Girl Scout daughter Rosie said, “This is a great event to help families especially at this time of year.”

WESTBOROUGH - Genocide survivor and author Clementine Bihiga will be the featured guest speaker at the Business Forward Females (BFF) program of the Corridor 9/495 Regional Chamber on Tuesday, Dec. 8.

The chamber’s BFF group is a networking forum for women designed to educate, inspire, and empower women from all levels of professional backgrounds.

At the age of eight, Bihiga and her family were forced to flee their home in Rwanda due to the genocide and civil war of 1994 which killed almost a million people in three months.

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH/ SOUTHBOROUGH -Neighbors helping neighbors. That is the mission of the Neighbor Brigade, a nonprofit, charitable organization, which coordinates a network of volunteers to provide free assistance to people who are experiencing a sudden or temporary crisis in their lives. The Northborough Southborough Neighbor Brigade chapter held a successful gift card drive in November, and is now looking to help brighten the holidays for local families who are facing hardships.

Northborough residents Judy Boyle and Mary Leach and Southborough resident Val Hickey currently co-lead the local chapter.

Gift cards for gas and grocery stores were donated by community members. If you or someone you know in Northborough or Southborough is facing a hardship this holiday season, you can privately provide a brief description of the need to the Neighbor Brigade by email at northboroughsouthboroughMA@neighborbrigade.org. The request will be reviewed as there is a limited amount of gift cards available. All information will be kept confidential.

“It takes courage to reach out,” said Leach.

The organization was founded by Pam Washek, Leach’s twin sister, and her close friend Jean Seiden, who were both diag-

nosed with cancer in 2002.

“During treatment, they were supported by neighbors and strangers from the community who were bringing meals or bringing kids to activities so they could focus on Val Hickey’s daughters, Tessa and Scarlett, helping their recovery,” said with a meal delivery.

During remission, they established the nonprofit Wayland Angels in 2003 to pay it forward and to coordinate acts of kindness for others. The vision was to expand the reach, which Washek did in 2010 as Wayland Angels transitioned into Neighbor Brigade.

Neighbor Brigade’s mission is to provide short term crisis assistance to people who may be receiving cancer treatments, facing an illness, recovering from an accident or house fire, or grieving a family death. Typically the assistance is a maximum of three to four months.

“It’s designed to get people through a treatment or accident,” said Leach. “We are there to fill in when family and friends cannot.”

Washek lost her battle with cancer in 2012, but her gift of sharing kindness and time remains strong. The Neighbor Brigade now has 30 chapters, and collectively has performed over 3,000 acts of kindness in 2020, an increase of 73 percent from 2019.

“This was her (Pam’s) passion and kept her going through her battle,” said Boyle. “Her dying wish was to have a chapter in every single community nationwide. She was inspired by the outpouring of support and love from perfect strangers, which is really the genuine message behind neighbors helping neighbors.”

The Northborough Southborough chapter currently has 97 volunteers who have performed 87 acts of kindness this year. The biggest challenge according to Leach is to find vol-

unteers to make deliveries. Volunteers are always prescreened and trained.

Although the pandemic has changed some of the organization’s activities, volunteers typically can deliver meals, shop for groceries, run errands, walk a dog, mow a lawn, shovel snow, or transport someone to a medical appointment.

Leach and Boyle said they hope that the holiday effort will serve as an inspiration to a lot of people who are struggling this year.

NORTHBOROUGH - Christian Campero became an official teenager on Nov. 21. Turning 13 is a big deal, but it is an even bigger deal for this Northborough resident because he is a cancer survivor. He’s been in remission for eight years and off treatment for five years. This birthday was more than turning 13; it was a blessing.

His mom Tricia was not going to let a pandemic stop the celebration with friends and family. With the help of the Northborough Police and Fire Departments, Robert E. Melican Middle School Assistant Principal Jennifer Callahan and Selectman Tim Kaelin, she organized a drive-by parade that started at Lincoln Street School and ended at the Melican, where Christian is a sixth grader. More than 30 cars came through honking their horns, bringing gifts and waving signs wishing Christian a happy birthday.

“It was really special to see all the friends and family who supported Christian during his treatment all there to see him reach such a special birthday milestone,” Tricia said.

Christian’s favorite mascots from the Worcester Railers, Worcester Bravehearts, PawSox, and Massachusetts Pirates also showed up to be a part of the fun.

COMMUNITY | Schools Marlborough School District approved to receive rapid COVID -19 testing

By Vicki Greene Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH – Marlborough Public Schools Superintendent Michael Bergeron said the state Department of Early and Secondary Education (DESE) has informed him that the district has been approved to receive rapid CO-

VID-19 testing which would be administered for symptomatic students or staff members.

In his Nov. 24 report to the School Committee, Bergeron said, “We are going through the protocols to become an approved site, and to gain the appropriate licenses to perform these tests.”

He stressed that “By no

means is this meant to be a testing program for wide-scale use- this is specifically for symptomatic individuals only.”

He said he does not have a confirmed date to roll-out the testing but is hoping to hear from the state in early December about when they would be sending a “batch of tests.”

ARHS standardized test scores remain above state average

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH/SOUTHBOROUGH - Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) standardized tests scores remain above the state average.

ARHS Principal Sean Bevan shared with the Regional School Committee on Nov. 18 that the October ACT composite mean score for ARHS students was 26.5, and SAT scores in both English and Math are all above the state average.

AP exams in 25 content areas were administered remote-

ly in May to 428 students with some content adjustments due to COVID-19.

The MCAS testing typically given to Grade 10 students in the areas of Math, English Language Arts and Science was postponed this past spring due to COVID-19, and rescheduled for January 2021. Testing for current sophomores is scheduled for May 2021.

Bevan shared other data regarding class sizes, which average 19.4 students with Social Studies and English classes being the largest.

he great White City Amusement Park has been closed for over 60 years now, however THEN NOW fond memories of the place still lingered with local residents for years and years. One such old “townie” was Joseph “Pony” Lucier. Pony ran the carousel at the park from 1942 to 1951, becoming well acquainted with all the various rides, games A pennant honors White City Park and other attractions that were featured there. In 1945, he met the young lady that would later become his wife – Carol “Candy” Paul worked at a hot dog stand at the park, where she soon learned to balance eight or nine hot dogs on one arm while using her other hand to put condiments on the “dogs!” The two soon hit it off, with “Pony” giving Carol the nickname “Candy” based on a popular song of the period that went “I call my sugar Candy.” Pony related many of his memories in a 1994 letter that concluded with the following: “My years spent in ‘White City Park’ were the ‘Good Days.’ We were at war, and people needed to unwind and have fun. I met many interesting people.

I heard many stories of their travels and somehow or other I felt fortunate to share their travels, although I never even left ‘White City Park.’ In my heart I still can hear the sound of the pipe organ and the sound of people laughing and enjoying themselves in a very tense, unsettled world. I am proud to have worked in ‘White City Park,’ even prouder to have lived it!”

ing, Bergeron said there were 13 positive cases in the district, that the number has not spiked, has hovered between 7 and 14 cases, and that “familial spread is the prevalent factor.”

In other business, School Committee Member Katherine Hennessy recently provided her colleagues with a draft letter she planned to submit to State Commissioner of Education Jeffrey Riley regarding concerns over a lack of discussion with districts and no definitive decision yet about offering MCAS testing remotely.

At the Committee’s Nov. 24 meeting, members decided to provide input to Hennessy on the draft letter and to vote at the Dec. 8 meeting on whether to submit the letter as a school committee.

MCAS testing is scheduled to start in January and according to Bergeron, there has been “little discussion” on whether

the commissioner would allow districts to offer the test to be taken remotely. Bergeron stressed that Marlborough has given other district benchmark tests to students remotely and there have not been any problems with inappropriate actions or parents taking the tests for their students, etc.

Hennessy told the Committee she felt strongly that “if a student has been remote they will (currently) have to make a choice to come in or not (to take the test) that puts the student, the district, family members in a bad position.”

Several school committee members thought it may be beneficial to send the letter representing the feelings of the full committee and plan to review Hennessy’s draft and provide suggestions. They said they plan to review an updated version of the letter and vote at the next meeting.

Marlborough Public Schools recognize two seniors with prestigious award

By Cindy Zomar Contributing Writer MARLBOROUGH - Marlborough High School Principal Dan Riley recently welcomed two seniors to a small ceremony outside the school to honor them with the National School Development Council (NSDC) Award for Academic Growth and Student Leadership in Learning.

“The NSDC Award is presented to high school seniors who have consistently pursued a high level of academic effort,” Riley said. “These young ladies have served as positive role models for the student body and exemplify admirable character and accomplishment. Congratulations to Ava Hannon and Patricia Jean-Baptiste!”

Riley went on to introduce Ava Hannon, remarking that she is “hardworking, determined, and persevering.”

Hannon arrived in the Marlborough Public Schools during her freshman year of high school and it took awhile for her to hit her stride academically. However, her transformation from then to now is definitely notable, starting off as a C+/B student

who by the end of her junior year had a solid A average.

“Her GPA (Grade point average) during her junior year was nearly double that of her previous two years at Marlborough High,” Riley noted.

As a member of the school’s Early College High School program, Hannon took all four classes offered in conjunction with Quinsigamond Community College and will have earned 12 college credits by the time she graduates.

She will be able to transfer those credits to a college of her choice. Hannon plans to pursue a career in Nursing.

High School student health survey reveals higher risky behavior by females

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH/SOUTHBOROUGH - Algonquin Regional High School (ARHS) Assistant Principal Andrew McGowan shared the findings of the 2018 MetroWest Health Foundation health survey with the Regional School Committee on Nov. 18. Although the results were received months ago and the school has prioritized addressing concerns, the pandemic put the presentation of the findings on hold. Overall, female students are engaging in higher risk activities, like vaping and alcohol use, and are under more stress than male students.

The optional survey captures emerging data on adolescent behaviors, including substance abuse, mental health, and physical activities in 25 communities every two years in November. At ARHS, 1,337 students (92.4 percent) participated in the 2018 survey.

The use of electronic vapor products increased with 31 percent of students reporting use within the 30 days prior to the survey a 9 percent increase in females compared to 1 percent increase in males. Alcohol use was reported by 33 percent - an increase of 36 percent in females and 29 percent in males.

Stress levels of female students were also much higher than that of male students – 51 percent of females agreed their life was very stressful versus 27 percent of males. It was noted that senior students reported the highest levels of stress, which is correlated to the timing of completing college applications.

“Given the substance use data, nearly 70 percent or more of our students are making positive choices when it comes to substance use,” McGowan said. “I don’t want those students to go unnoticed with this data because that is a significant population of our school.”

Another positive point noted was many students have a parent or another adult at home or at school to talk with about important things and personal problems.

ARHS has partnered with local resources and staff continues to make connections with students. Educating students on the impact of substance use is incorporated in health and science classes.

“Most students are receiving that freshmen year so they can make informed decisions as they go through their four years here at the high school,” said McGowan.

The big question that still has no concrete answer is why female students are taking part in more risky behaviors.

A modified bell schedule and an updated homework policy during school vacation time have been instituted to lessen stress.

Principal Sean Bevan said one silver lining of the pandemic is students have probably had less access to addictive devices while quarantined with their adult parents.

The current plan is for the 2020 survey to be administered in the spring of 2021.

Recently Shrewsbury High School’s (SHS) esports team was honored for winning the League of Legends first-ever

“Summer Showdown” tournament hosted by PlayVS. Esports (also known as electronic sports) is a form of competition using video games and often is played as a multiplayer team format. Hudson teacher participates in COVID vaccine trial, recounts experiences Vaccine | from page 1

when Plackowski got involved, hearing an advertisement for a program based at UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester.

She got her first injection in September. Three weeks later, she headed back to Worcester for a second dose.

Plackowski does not know if she actually received the vaccine. She could have very well been given a placebo shot as a part of the trial format.

Either way, she’s now in the process of regularly reporting any side effects or coronavirus symptoms through an app on her phone, and through a half dozen appointments with doctors over the next two years.

“We’ve all been feeling really helpless and wishing there was a resolution and wanting to speed that along,” Plackowski said of COVID-19 and her motivation to join this trial. “...I just kind of thought this would be some small way that I could have a part in doing something.”

The pandemic has taken a personal toll. Plackowski has two young sons. They’re able to follow safety precautions.

But one was recently exposed to the virus and was awaiting a COVID test result as of Nov. 15. Both, like so many, have also just felt the emotional and social strain of months in quarantine.

“I see my kids’ elementary school years slipping away and being consumed by this,” Plackowski said.

It’s unclear when exactly a COVID-19 vaccine will become

available. But there are promising signs.

Plackowski’s Pfizer trial recently made global headlines, reporting a 90 percent effectiveness rate and outlining a timeline that could have emergency doses available to medical professionals and other high risk individuals by the end of the year.

From there, Pfizer says it could produce over a billion doses through 2021 even as that vaccine faces questions about its shelf stability during mass production and global transport.

Plackowski sees these concerns but leaves discussions on them to the professionals handling authorizations and scientific plans.

Maureen of Marlborough; one daughter, Cheryl Gill and her husband Michael of Lancaster; her sister, Josephine White; six grandchildren; six greatgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She also she leaves her favorite family pet, Boomah.

A graveside service was held Nov. 25 at the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Marlborough. A celebration of life will be planned for a later date.

Helene Mutti, 87 M A R L BOROUGH - Helene (Richer) Mutti, 87, died after a brief illness Nov. 18, 2020 at home, surrounded by her loving children, David, Kathleen, Gary, and granddaughter Corey. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard “Dick” Mutti, who died in 2013.

Born in Marlborough the daughter of the late Armand and Gladys (Blanchette) Richer, she lived in Marlborough most of her life.

In August, Helene moved to North Palm Beach, Fla. to live with her daughter and sonin-law, Kathleen and Stephen.

Among Helene’s survivors are her four children, David M. Mutti of Woodshole, Kathleen G. O’Leary and her husband Stephen of North Palm Beach, Fla., Christopher M. Mutti and his wife Doreen McKeown of Falmouth, and Gary R. Mutti of Falmouth; eight beloved grandchildren, Kelly, Elizabeth, Ian, Ry, Nicole, Carley, Corey and Elizabeth; 12 great-grandchildren, all of whom she adored; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her brother, Philip Richer; two sisters, Norma Bakstran and Jean Gordon Conway; and her precious grandsons, Thomas Mutti and Justin Stewart.

An internment service was held Nov. 24 at Howard Street Cemetery in Northborough.

his year 2020 has been a unique one that we will never forget. In light of the ongoing pandemic, I would first like to say that my thoughts are with those affected by the virus and hope that you, your loved ones, and your colleagues are safe. Despite these uncertain times, our industry has seen some extraordinary advantages for both buyers and sellers. We have encountered unprecedented, record low interest rates with high buyer demand, and increasing home values that have benefitted sellers throughout New England. Making clients’ health and wellbeing a priority, I have adjusted my practices to enable many customers to still be able to achieve their Real Estate goals.

On a personal level, I have been fortunate to see the birth of my third grandchild. And though I am filled with pride for all my children, I am exceptionally proud that my daughter is a nurse and has worked at the hospital, throughout this pandemic, to help those affected by this health crisis.
