By Bonnie Adams Managing Editor REGION - Food is a basic necessity for survival, yet for far too many people, being able to get food for their families is a constant worry. But in this era of the coronavirus, with rampant unemployment, schools shut down and restrictions put on other social services, it is truly becoming a public health crisis.

For State Rep. Hannah Kane (R-Shrewsbury) it is has been an issue she has long been vested in – each year her annual golf tournament raises nearly $20,000 for each of the local food pantries in her district of Shrewsbury and Westborough. But Kane’s commitment to helping those in need stretches beyond her district’s borders.

As such, prior to the current COVID-19 crisis, she, along with several other legislators had formed the Food System Caucus. The pandemic has accelerated their efforts to help those in need.

As stated on its website (https://www.mafoodsystemcaucus.com), the caucus is “bicameral and bipartisan” to support and grow the local food system in the commonwealth. There are three main areas the caucus

Rapunzel Rapunzel – you can finally get your hair cut!

REGION – For those who have been feeling a bit “unkempt” as they lamented their overgrown roots and shaggy hairdos over the past 2 -1/2 months, the news that hairdressers and barbershops can re-open as part of the state’s Phase 1 process is very good news indeed. While some may question why those businesses are part of Phase 1, it should be noted that they are usually run by solo proprietors with very few employees and as such, have struggled financially during the pandemic. All salons must still follow very strict guidelines to protect not only themselves but also that of their grateful and soon-to- be stylish once again customers.

Chambers of Commerce around the world have been champions of free enterprise for over 400 years, rallying around everything from job creation to community response during war efforts, disaster response and unsteady economic times.

COVID-19 is no different, and during this national healthcare crisis, the collective worldwide chamber community is leading the charge in driving plans for business preparedness during the pandemic and the economic recovery and growth that must follow.

We acknowledge that our travel, hospitality, healthcare, insurance, retail and service industries have been hit hard by this economic downturn and we are working around

the clock to support them and others.

The pressing question is how as a business networking organization, do chambers execute this in a time when “networking” is scarcely possible?

Here are some ways in which the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce is leading our business community in planning and preparing for economic recovery: Being a resource for factbased data, information and education on COVID-19 and business sustainability through this pandemic.

Officials amend voting day plans to keep election days safe

By Dakota Antelman Contributing Writer REGION - Town halls are largely empty, but the clerks of the region’s six towns have been busy of late, settling a complicated COVID-19 quandary around their annual spring elections.

Needing to delay elections amid a stay at home advisory, officials find themselves pinned against a hard deadline -- pandemic or not, they must hold a vote by the end of June.

“We won’t have a big turnout but, by law, you need to have your polls open at least for a few hours,” Shrewsbury Clerk Sandy Wright explained.

With close to 1,500 coronavirus cases documented across the region, experts have long said social distancing remains a necessity.

“Our seniors have been particularly isolated during this pandemic,” he noted. “We hope to brighten their day just a bit with some excitement and recognition.”

The parade began from the senior center and first passed the All Wars Memorial between Main and Common streets in observance of Memorial Day. The vehicles proceeded through a few neighborhoods to drive by senior residents outside their homes as well as at the Colonial Gardens apartments and Southborough Meadows condos.

A police motorcycle, cruiser and fire engine led the parade, followed by town officials along with members of DMC and Minuteman Model A Ford Club of Massachusetts. Many of the vehicles, including some antique and classic cars, were decorated with American flags and signs proclaiming messages such as “Dull Men’s Club wishes you health and happiness” and “We are all in this together.”

Relaxing plenty of rules, budgetary constraints all but require towns still hold their elections before the end of the 2020 fiscal year.

“I’m sure some people think we should wait until even later,” Wright said. “But there’s so many restrictions and issues if you go after June 30th.”

New dates now run from June 13, when Westborough will vote, to as late as June 30, when Northborough will wrap up area voting.

Though state and federal officials, from Gov. Charlie Baker, to National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases head Anthony Fauci say risks will likely continue long past the end of June, local leaders say they’re confident they can keep constituents safe.

“We want to give folks the opportunity if they choose to still vote in the manner

that they’re accustomed to,” Northborough Town Clerk Andy Dowd said. “Our highest priority that day is to make sure that the environment is safe for voters and for our election workers.”

Aiding operations are a series of measures now possible thanks to regulations the state has changed.

Namely, any voter can request an absentee ballot. Thus, Wright, Dowd, and leaders across the region are almost unanimously asking residents to vote by mail if possible.

“That’s been the big push on our end,” Dowd said.

Even those that still vote in person, however, will see operations far from usual in their typical precinct location.

Shrewsbury will allow just five voters into the physical voting building at a time.

Those voters will cast their ballots using pens sanitized after each use in booths similarly sprayed down the second they

walk away.

Voters will interact with election workers wearing face masks and shields and, in general, will see less election workers.

Wright said she’s cut her staff from the typical cadre of 70 volunteers to just 50, recognizing that many of the locals who normally run her operations are older and more susceptible to COVID-19 infection.

“We asked them if they were comfortable working,” she said of her staff. “A number of them did say they’re not comfortable, but we did manage to fill all the spots.”

Avidia Bank makes additional donations to support those impacted by COVID-19 HUDSON - Avidia Bank recently announced that it would be donating additional money to a variety of organizations to assist those who are impacted by the COVID-19 virus.

The bank partnered with United Way of Tri-County to provide a $10,000 match to help support food pantries in Marlborough, Clinton and Framingham run by United Way. Through their #GivingTuesdayNow campaign, Avidia Bank and United Way publicized the match to encourage additional donations

from the community.

The Bank also made donations to food pantries in Hudson, Northborough, Westborough, Ginny’s Helping Hand, Inc. in Leominster, and the Worcester County Food Bank, which totaled $23,750.

Beyond food pantries, hospitals have increasing needs for personal protective equipment (PPEs) for staff as well as medical supplies patients need. The bank provided $10,000 to the UMASS Memorial - Marlborough Hospital to help alleviate the costs for these supplies.

Impact of job losses Since the pandemic hit, there have been 966,110 job loss claims – a staggering 25.84 percent of the workforce. Many of those jobs are in what is considered “nonessential,” such as retail stores, gyms, hair salons and other non-food related businesses. Many restaurants, who, if they chose to stay open, could only offer curbside or takeout, laid off or furloughed their employees.

“April’s unemployment data showed the highest unemployment rate since the Great Depression and the number of jobs lost in the last 10 weeks will exceed the job loss in the entire 2008-2009 recession,” Kane said.

“38 percent of Massachusetts residents now report experiencing food insecurity,” she added.

The federal government program Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), has seen a 360 percent increase in applications for March and April. This program (formerly known as food stamps) will likely be close to 600,000 by the end of June, up approximately 150,000 more than this time last year.

Many residents are also relying on the over 900 local food banks for food. Nearly 2.6 million (45 percent more) pounds of food were distributed in March of this year, compared to March of last year, representing more than 2.1 million meals.

But, Kane noted, many local food pantries are not seeing some seniors that normally use the food pantry services.

“This is a concern – they are of course worried about leaving their homes,” she said.

“We are working on ways to get food to them.”

Supply chain woes Stores have already started to see shortages of meat and poultry due to many processing plants closed down after coronavirus breakouts. Farmers have had to destroy their crops and dairy farms have sent millions of gallons of milk down the drain because so many schools and restaurants can no longer accept their products.

“Bulk food for the restaurant industry is not packaged and labeled for retail distribution,” Kane said. “Farmers, fishers and small food retailers are experiencing supply chain disruptions. We need to be able to help them stay in business as well.”

Adding to the strain, Kane noted, is that food costs nearly 18 percent more than the national average in Massachusetts and twenty four percent more in eastern Mass.

Help – and helping – on a local level

Kane recommended that those who need food first check with their local food pantry.

“They will be able to help you immediately get food,” she said. “Folks can also contact the Food Source Hotline to help access additional food assistance.”

She also suggested that those who are in a position to help donate to an organization in their own community.

said, that those in need do not feel embarrassed about asking for help.

“This is nothing to feel ashamed about – you did nothing wrong,” she added. “If you need for your family, there are ways to get that food.”

Many children in need rely on meals they receive at school.

With schools closed, administrators have had to find ways to get those meals to them, whether they are picked up at a central location or delivered.

“Current participation at 1,500 non-congregate school meals sites while schools are closed is 24 percent, which is lower than ‘normal’ school meal service participation of 65 percent, but higher than participation in the Summer Food Service Program which is generally 14 percent,” Kane said.

Additionally, with schools closed and no alternative source of child-care, it is hard for parents to get out of the house to access food resources.

Three vie for two spots on Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen SHREWSBURY – Three candidates will be on the ballot for two seats on the Board of Selectmen in the Tuesday, June 16 Annual Town Election. The Community Advocate has invited the candidates to share a bit about their backgrounds and why they are running for selectmen.

Here, in their own words, are the answers from the candidates – incumbents Beth Casavant and Maurice DePalo, as well as challenger Benjamin Tartaglia.

Please give a brief introductory statement on your background.

Beth Casavant (Incumbent) - My husband and I chose to move to Shrewsbury with our two daughters in the fall of 2008, attracted to this well-run, close-knit community with excellent schools. Since then I have been committed to doing my part to add value to the community serving as a Town Meeting Member, a Library Trustee, and a PTO President. I have been involved with many campaigns aimed at improving and invest-

ing in our community, most recently Community Supporters for Beal, which I co-chaired. I am currently a board member of the Shrewsbury Rotary Club and a Trustee for Framingham State University.

Maurice DePalo (Incumbent) - I am currently the Chair of the Board of Selectmen and Town Meeting member from Precinct two. As a Selectman, I’ve served on many town and state committees. Currently, I am a representative to the Central Mass Metropolitan Organization which allocates federal road funds locally.

I grew up in town, attended Shrewsbury public schools, and graduated from Worcester State College with a business administration degree. Last year, I retired as the property manager at Open Sky Community Services, a nonprofit serving people with psychiatric and developmental disabilities. My wife Barbara is a retired Shrewsbury teacher.

We are the proud parents of two children and grandparents of five grandchildren.

Currently, I’m a Town Meeting Member. On the Senior Center “Operations Improvement Committee” I supported handicapped rest room safety and automatic doors. I worked with the Shrewsbury Credit Union obtaining the Senior Center lobby television.

What do feel in your experience would make you the best candidate for this position?

Casavant - My first term on the Board of Selectmen was spent understanding the complexities of the position, working collaboratively with my colleagues and our new town manager, and finding ways to improve communication with residents.

If re-elected, I will leverage my experience to continue leading Shrewsbury in a fiscally responsible manner given the financial challenges related to the pandemic. I am a problem-

Casavant - In Shrewsbury, we maintain our public buildings and renovate or replace them when they have surpassed their useful life. If re-elected I want to be involved with bringing forth a police station building project that meets the needs of our growing community. The current police station is no longer sufficient and other buildings in town have been prioritized to take advantage of state funding and grant money. It is beyond time to look critically at the police station and address space and programmatic needs and to understand if there is a path forward for a new building given the financial challenges caused by the pandemic.

DePalo - My first committee choice always is a building committee. Due to my background, I enjoy getting into the nuts and bolts of construction projects. I enjoy the dynamics of working collaboratively with various professionals and contractors, as a team, to get the project completed. WASA members’ kindness extended to local seniors

Town meeting postponed, summer camps cancelled

WESTBOROUGH – During the normal school year, members of Westborough Athletic and Social Association (WASA) raise funds for the town’s youth to support them in their academic and athletic endeavors. Recently the group’s members extended that support to the town’s senior population through an initiative with the Senior Center.

After reaching out to Alma Demanche, the Senior Center’s director, eight WASA members volunteered to do spring clean and yard work for seniors who needed a bit of help.

At Marcia Patten’s home, WASA members Mike Stanton and Mark Higgins cleared out a patch of lawn that had been overgrown with weeds and debris. They then mulched it and planted some perennial flowers.

“We were happy to do this,” Higgins said. “This town has been great to me and great to my kids. So I was happy to give back to someone who needs it.”

“We’ve been here about three times, working a little bit each time in between working at our regular jobs at home during this [stay at home mandate],” Stanton added. “We are glad to help Mrs. Patten out.”

For her part Patten noted it was a wonderful surprise to get the call from Demanche.

“I had not been able to get to that area in the last few years,” she said. “They replaced the weeds with lovely new perennials that added color to the once neglected area. I am grateful to Mark and Mike for their help.”

NORTHBOROUGH – Massachusetts has over a million dollars in federal aid earmarked for Northborough. But the town cannot actually access “the lions share” of it, Town Administrator John Coderre said May 18.

Discussing that money, originally allocated by the CARES coronavirus relief federal stimulus act, Coderre told selectmen that he expects funds will eventually become accessible, but added he must budget, for now, assuming they won’t.

“We need to prepare for the worst-case scenario,” he said.

In total, the CARES act distributed $150 billion in state and local relief funding, with Massachusetts receiving $2.7 billion. State officials then divided that money among the commonwealth’s 351 municipalities according to population.

Though that gave Northborough a share of just over $1.3 million, the federal gov-

ernment currently says such funds can only be used to offset “direct COVID-19 expenditures” such as personal protection equipment purchases and testing costs.

Coderre says the town has only incurred about $100,000 in such expenses.

That, though, is as they still face up to a $1 million cut in state funding and $600,000 in lost tax revenue due to coronavirus related decreases in hotel occupancy and the temporary shuttering of the restaurant industry, among other things.

“We feel like we’re crawling through the desert and there’s an icy glass of water just out of reach for us,” Coderre said.

With that “water” or not, however, Coderre said he’s assembled a plan to allow town government to function without federal aid if need be.

If executed, that budget would minimize personnel layoffs by instead postponing non-emergency infrastructure projects like road work, cancelling orders for new police and fire department equipment,

and avoiding filling now vacant Assistant DPW Director and Facilities Director positions, among other things.

Altogether, those cuts would total just over $400,000.

Though major, Coderre said there’s a bitter silver lining in this.

“This is a disaster for most communities,” he said. “I don’t know of any other area community that could take a 17 percent reduction in state aid and still put a balanced budget on the table.”

Reiterating points he first made at a public information session two weeks earlier, Coderre noted Northborough had spent the last decade planning for a recession. Thus, he said, it entered this economic catastrophe with room to increase taxes within legal limits and with their traditional budget structure much less reliant on unreliable revenue streams like hotel and meals taxes that have dried up of late.

place over the last 10 years that have put us in a good spot,” he said. “It’s still going to be difficult, but we’re in a better spot than most.”

Beyond Coderre’s budget update, the Northborough Board of Selectmen did also take action on more short-term ramifications of the COVID-19 pandemic May 18.

They postponed their previously scheduled May 27 town meeting to June 22, noting that date is effectively the last one on which the town can hold its meeting to get a full budget authorized before the start of the new fiscal year July 1.

If social distancing requirements, in fact, persist and the town needs to delay the meeting again, it would then enact “1/12th” budgets that would fund operations in 30-day increments until whenever a town meeting could safely take place.

“Those are really our only options,” Coderre said.

The town has also cancelled summer camps while also urging business owners and landlords potentially reopening facilities in the coming weeks to briefly flush their taps to clear unhealthy standing water out of their buildings before drinking.

My interest areas include restoring Jordan Pond to its former glory. Constructing 100 units for Housing Authority tenants. Changing the form of government from a town to a city. Enacting term limits. Electing the Finance committee. Determining the alternatives to using our town wells for drinking water.

What is the primary problem you feel the town is facing and what do you think should be done to rectify it?

Casavant - The primary problem facing Shrewsbury is the financial impact from the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to this crisis we were grappling with a revenue shortfall impacting our municipal departments and schools. COVID-19 further complicates an already difficult budget year, creating lasting impacts that will challenge us for years to come.

This economic downturn is unlike anything we have seen before. The full impact on town budgets will depend upon how much funding we receive in state aid and how much less funding we generate from local receipts. If re-elected, I will work with my colleagues and the town manager to make decisions about the budget that prioritize public safety, our schools, and maintaining our infrastructure.

DePalo - The most pressing problem before us is the COVID-19 crisis financial impact. The town manager and selectmen have been working on the two to five year budget plan and the related financial impact of opening the new Beal School. The COVID-19 crisis has changed the focus from long range to immediate, as FY21 budget preparation is delayed pending state revenue projections. Dealing with this severe economic slowdown requires operational changes based upon what we are learning during this crisis. We need to develop new ways to deliver services while maintaining the same service levels. Most importantly, we need to study and implement new approaches for administering town government.

Tartaglia - The most frequently asked question I receive is, “Why don’t we have term limits?” Another is the increasing use of vendors for services. An overriding problem is the overreaching by unelected regulators. What is the plan for when our ash landfill is at capacity? How can we increase our North South traffic flow? What is happening with the mystery road through the land between Main Street and Maple Ave? How will all the vacant office space along Route 9 affect our commercial development? Determining the toxic land in Shrewsbury?

Officials discuss opening recreational facilities and plans for seniors parade

By Jennifer L. Grybowski Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - The Board of Selectmen and Board of Health heard from Recreation Director Jennifer Kirkland regarding opening up tennis courts and pickleball courts at their joint meeting Tuesday night.

Walsh said tennis courts explicitly fall under the outdoor recreational guidelines put forth by the state, with a May 25 opening date as part of Phase I. Because the Board of Health closed down certain town facilities - including the courts - back in March, they made a broad vote to follow state guidelines for reopening of all kinds of facilities going forward.

There was some discussion about putting up appropriate signage encouraging people to follow social distancing guidelines and Kirkland said she has

considered taping off six-foot sections outside the gate.

Kirkland said she’s already had about 20 calls from people looking to use the courts.

“If we find too many people showing up and not proactively social distancing, we will close them back down,” she said.

That spurred a discussion about possibly setting up an online sign-up policy to use the courts, and what the town’s responsibility was to enforce such a thing. BOS Vice Chair Shelby Marshall said at some point, people have to take personal responsibility for their actions.

“I think we have to be realistic about the recreation department becoming the recreational policing department,” she said.

BOS Chair Ian Johnson agreed, saying that unless the courts are staffed, it is difficult to manage enforcing anything.

Shrewsbury residents join forces to organize community scavenger hunt

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – To provide some much needed entertainment, Shrewsbury residents Stephen Trotto, Beth Shae Bryant, Carlos Garcia, Gary Hunter, Mary Depew, Michelle Roy Brown, Bob Wiggin and Andrea Castinetti are organizing a “social distancing” Scavenger Hunt Sunday, May 31, from 12-4 p.m. In case of inclement weather, an alternate date will be determined.

After a few Zoom meetings, the group strategized to come up with a safe way to participate by requiring that all teams be made up of only the people that are in quarantine together.

Additionally, they decided to turn it into a fundraiser, asking a nominal donation of $20 per team. Proceeds will be used to help fund protective equipment for local medical staff, as well as to support Worcester Pride.

In planning the event, Trotto and his team are busy organizing a

She relayed a proposed parade route, and said that it had been decided parents will drive and seniors can ride in the passenger’s seat. In response to an inquiry, she said about 90 percent of seniors have a parent with access to a vehicle, and they were working to figuring out how to safely include the other 10 percent.

She said the rotary would be decorated, businesses would decorate their storefronts, the marching band would play distanced on the high school field to kick off the parade and there may be a DJ on the rotary.

“I just want everyone to be safe and to enjoy their day and have a good time,” she said.

It was agreed that if people stay in their cars, they would be safe. There was some discussion

however about how to keep spectators safe, and what to do if people got out of their cars. It was determined people should definitely wear masks.

“Ideally masks are a secondary feature for when people can’t be six feet apart,” Board of Health Chair Dr. Alan M. Ehrlich said. “It makes sense for spectators do both…What you have to ideally prevent is friends getting together and being too close and

you have to take human nature into consideration. So I think the masks are indispensable in this situation as a backup.”

There was also discussion about how to prevent a bottleneck situation of spectators along the parade route, and it was suggested that the route be extended to allow for more mileage, and include streets that have sidewalks as much as possible.

Postal employees continue to serve public during crisis MARLBOROUGH – Amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, many people such as first responders, nurses, doctors and grocery store workers are rightfully appreciated as essential heroes on the frontline. There is also another group that has been working steadily each day through the crisis serving the public – postal employees.

Denise Vaccaro of Marlborough, herself a postal employee who is a writer/editor with the USPS Northeast Area Corporate Communications, shared an encounter she recently had with Ryan Calabrese, a 15 year employee.

“Normally husband gets our mail, a fun duty I gave up long ago in our marriage.

Sometimes I venture out on a Saturday where I get my mail hand-delivered as our carrier Ryan fills up the steel mail boxes at our condo complex in Marlborough,” she said. “I get to hear about his job and talk shop since I, too, am a postal worker. Then he drives his white truck decaled with

Vaccarro added that Calarese told her, “I realize I’m a stable part of the community but I like to add something positive to it. It’s usually singing. A job is much like a relationship – you get out what you put in.”

Shrewsbury historic building sold just days prior to foreclosure auction

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY - The historic Hale Block Building, located at 566-572 Main St. and neighboring United Bank building, 564 Main St.. has been sold. A foreclosure auction was origi-

nally scheduled for May 12 to be conducted by Newton based Stanley J. Paine Auctioneers.

However, the auction was continued to May 21 due to concerns surround Gov. Charlie Baker’s Stay-at-Home advisory due to the COVID-19 pandemic according to Paine.

Remembering Shrewsbury’s World War I heroes

SHREWSBURY - This listing of Shrewsbury residents recently came to light at an estate sale. It was printed by Ralph McKenzie, a lifelong town resident who ran a small printing business out of his home. He served for a short time during the war, and his name appears on the list. Although the list catalogs World War I veterans, it appears that it was printed during the World War II years, as several of the illustrations around the borders of the document depict World War II era aircraft and equipment! At the top are listed the men that lost their lives in the “Great War” – this is timely in that there are plans to have a historical display relating to Major (Dr.) Howard Beal in the main lobby of the Beal Elementary School, currently under construction, on Lake Street. In addition, the gym will be named (as was the gym in the “old” Beal Shrewsbury’s World War I Honor Roll School at the center of town) in memory of Private Michael Nee, the youngest resident to die in the war. Of further interest, listed at the bottom of the document, are the two women that served as nurse during the war, Ruth M. Sieurin and Maria Ducey. Ruth Sieurin later married Stewart W. Paul, who went on to become a Lieutenant General and later replaced Dwight D. Eisenhower (after retirement from the Army) as the president of Gettysburg College.

In the interim, on May 15, both buildings were quietly purchased by Arilia Holdings, LLC and Weinstock Holdings LLC, each with 50 percent interest.

The Hale Block Building sold for $890,000 while the United Bank building sold for $300,000.

Mortgages for both are on record with Cornerstone Bank.

When asked for information, Paine stated that the auction had been cancelled and he declined to give further details.

“The purchase of these highly visible properties could be an opportunity for invest-

ment to renovate the larger building and rejuvenate the town center,” remarked Moe DePalo, chair of the Shrewsbury Board of Selectmen. “We look forward to talking with the new owners to discuss their plans and our work on the future of the entire town center area.”

The town of Shrewsbury has assessed the buildings with a combined value of $1,521,000 that had been owned by Block Enterprises listed in the name of Shrewsbury resident Pamela Cole.

The larger of the two buildings is a 10,000-square-foot two-story brick building that was built in the 1920s. It once anchored Hale’s Drug Store and is thus known as the Hale Block Building.

With spring season cancelled, sports directors and coaches try to inspire student-athletes

come to a screeching halt in recent weeks, high school athletics are no exception. Graduating seniors have forgone their final seasons, coaches have abandoned game plans, and the newly budding trees

In an environment where nothing feels normal, Scanlon and all of the Grafton High School coaches are looking for ways to connect with their student-athletes.

athletes and athletic programs through unprecedented times.

Johanna DiCarlo, athletic director at Westborough High school, is also working to integrate unique solutions.

“Athletics plays such an important part in connecting our kids to our school community and to their town,” DiCarlo said. “Our coaches all are recording little messages to our kids, so I’ve been putting those out on our Twitter account daily for the last week or so, and we’ll continue to do those.”

In addition to Twitter messages, DiCarlo noted that many of the Westborough High School coaches are working to reach out and connect with students a little more directly.

“We have a lot of our coaches reaching out through virtual meetings...and I know a lot of coaches are using things like Google Classroom to send things like fun activities or videos. They’re just trying to engage the kids in any way they can.”

Grafton and Westborough are just two examples of the concerted effort local schools and communities are making to support both students and student-athletes during unprecedented times.

“We miss our student-athletes and the healthy competition we are typically used to in the spring,” Scanlon noted, “but we are all still here to continue supporting our students and to keep the spirit of educational athletics alive.”

By Lauren Schiffman Contributing Writer GRAFTON - Established in 2018 in Grafton and open for less than a year, Trusted Like Family Home Care provides hands-on, personalized care for seniors and adults with disabilities in their own homes. Mike Braun founded the company, and along with Lisa Powers, RN, Director of Nursing, spent significant time recruiting the right candidates to provide that care throughout Worcester County.

Services include companionship, light housekeeping, meal preparation and driving clients to appointments and on errands. Caregivers pick up groceries and prescription medications and remind clients when to take those medications.

They also provide ADL - activities of daily living - support, like personal care activities and dressing.

During the pandemic, caregivers also have been ensuring that the food in their clients’ homes are not expired and that

clients have an adequate supply of food and medications.

All Trusted Like Home Care caregivers are certified Home Health Aides (HHA) or Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA), and all undergo extensive training prior to providing hands-on care.

“We hire only highly skilled caregivers, and we continue to train them to enhance their skill sets,” Braun said.

For example, if a client needs transferring support, the caregiver receives training on proper transferring techniques, ensur-

ing the safety of both client and caregiver. All training is conducted by Powers.

All hires have previous caregiving experience. Some are certified in Alzheimer’s care and some in first aid. Braun said that when a client has a particular set of circumstances, Powers trains the caregiver in those areas, regardless of previous experience.

How does Braun determine which caregiver to assign to clients?

“We put a lot of effort into matching clients with caregivers. We survey our caregivers on several topics,” he said. “We try to find out as much as we can about our caregivers and clients so we can make the best possible match. If we can find those common threads, that’s a place for the relationship to start.”

Braun added that he makes every effort to keep caregivers assigned consistently to clients; it helps to build a relationship and minimizes confusion on the part of the client, especially one with memory impairment.

Braun also conducts back-

ground checks on each caregiver, including a criminal history search, CORI check and research on driving records.

“I’ve been very lucky in finding a terrific set of caregivers through personal connections and people that I trust. I hire great caregivers - not just any caregiver,” Braun said.

“Excellent client service” is Braun’s motivation. He communicates constantly with clients and their families to reassure them about precautions being taken in the home and how caregivers are protecting families’ loved ones.

How has Braun adapted his business to our “new normal?”

For one, he requires that caregivers carry a thermometer to take and report their temperature prior to beginning a shift. Since the early days of the pandemic, “we communicated the CDC guidance regarding the symptoms of COVID-19 and provided preventative measures to each of our caregivers,” Braun said.

He also requires staff to remain home if they do not feel well

– a policy in place before the pandemic.

Caregivers have received extra supplies of masks, hand sanitizers, wipes and gloves, and they wear masks at all times when in a client’s home.

Further, upon entering, caregivers are required to immediately wash their hands.

“We use a smartphonebased app for our caregivers to check into and out of each client visit. Each caregiver must answer a series of COVID-19 screening questions prior to beginning a shift. If any of their answers indicate that they might be sick, they cannot check in for the shift,” Braun said.

Additionally, Braun has increased the frequency of communication with caregivers, clients and their families.

“All of this has been very well received by the clients and their family members,” he added.

received a call recently on my new listing at 214 Brewer Street in Northborough. The caller asked: “ What ’s the catch? Why so cheap?” After a moment, the caller asked, “Are you there?” I remember saying, “Yes, yes I’m here.”The price of $629,900 in Northborough is not all that cheap so I wasn’t sure if I was being punked.

weeks and will be working remotely for the foreseeable future. He explained to me that he is getting married and plans on starting a family soon thereafter. Warren explained to me that he was ready to move to the ‘burbs and wanted to know why this house was so cheap.

OK, so most agents are trained to screen these types of calls to quickly determine if they have a tire kicker on the line or whether the inquiry is the real deal. Prodding further to determine what I was dealing with, I asked Warren what prompted his call. Warren couldn’t believe that he could possibly own a 3,300-square-foot home on a 1.5-acre lot that “could accommodate 18 houses in his Boston neighborhood” for half the price of his current rental payment. He seemed skeptical, yet delighted that there were not one but four car garages on the property because he would need to resume guarding his on-street parking spot once the city opens up.

An avid swimmer, Warren went on to say he “cringes at the thought of sharing a pool with strangers, if the community pool even opens up this summer.” The inground heated pool at 214 Brewer was another big draw

for him. Ease of commute for the occasional trip back into Boston was high on the list as well. I was beginning to see why Warren had called me.

To assure him he wasn’t alone, and since Warren clearly was going stir crazy and wanted to talk, I read some excerpts from recent publications.

Industry expert George Ratiu, Senior Economist at Realtor.com stated: “With the re-opening of the economy scheduled to be cautious, the impact on consumer preferences will likel y shif t buy ing behavior…Consumers are already looking for larger homes, bigger yards, access to the outdoors and more separation from neighbors.

As we move into the recovery stage, these preferences will play an important role in the type of homes consumers will want to buy. They will also play a role in the coming discussions on zoning and urban planning. While higher density has been a hallmark of urban development over the past decade, the pandemic may lead to a re-thinking of space allocation.”

nationwide that asked whether they would consider moving to less-populated areas once the pandemic ended. Nearly 40 percent of U.S. adults, the majority between the ages of 18 and 34, living in urban areas indicated they are considering moving out of densely populated areas and toward rural areas.

“Space now means something more than square feet,” Harris Poll CEO John Gerzema said, according to Axios.com. “Already beset by high rents and clogged streets, the virus is now forcing urbanites to consider social distancing as a lifestyle.”

Warren and his fiancée will be coming out to view the new listing at 214 Brewer Street and a few other “affordable McMansions” as he calls them. Warren and I both agree with the industry experts and expect to see the trend from urban to suburban living increase as social distancing becomes a way of life. This is great news for homeowners and potential home sellers as property values will remain strong and only increase as inventory remains low.

Shrewsbury High School announces extensive agenda to honor class of 2020

SHREWSBURY – The Shrewsbury High School (SHS) class of 2020 had been on pins and needles with anticipation to know what this year’s graduation would entail. The suspense was over when on May 20 official “Graduation Recognition” plans were released by Todd Bazydlo, school principal and Dr. Joseph Sawyer, superintendent of schools.

The nine events planned be an extraordinary send off for the class, which like seniors across the country, have become part of the story of the coronavirus pandemic’s impact.

Planning was going to be challenging but it was compounded because finding alternative ways to celebrate the achievements of over 500 students made it much more difficult.

Bazydlo and Dr. Sawyer provided a plan that honors individual students and the class as a whole, while working within public health guidelines in order to protect all involved.

“Although we are saddened by the havoc the COVID-19 virus has had on our community, we have worked with our students to develop a series of in-person and remote events that we feel will appropriately celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of the class of 2020,” Bazydlo said. “Our entire staff wishes we could celebrate with our students in-person, but we know that is not possible at this time, so we have also carved out future

Both Jim and Marcia are longtime Shrewsbury residents with deep roots in the Shrewsbury Public School system. Marcia is a retired educator who spent 19 years as a curriculum specialist at Spring Street School. Jim is the coach for Shrewsbury High School’s cross country team.

COMMUNITYOBITUARIES Katherine M. Silvestris, 80 HUDSON Katherine M. (Cronin) Silvestris, 80, of Hudson, died May 14, 2020 at Marlborough Hills Health Care Center in Marlborough. She was the wife of the late Albert Silvestris of Worcester.

She is survived by her brothers, Francis Cronin Jr. of Hudson and William Cronin of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; her nephews, Timothy Cronin, Francis Cronin and Michael Lugin; her nieces, Katie Moody and Cathy Cutler; sister-in-law, Andrea Cronin; and great-nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Patricia Lugin and Michael Cronin.

A private burial service will be held at Forestvale Cemetery. Tighe Hamilton Regional Funeral Home of Hudson is assisting with arrangements.

Alvah Hubley Jr., 90 HOPKINTON - Alvah “Bud” Hubley Jr., 90, of Hopkinton, passed away at his home May 10, 2020. He was the beloved husband of Martha E. (Funderburk) Hubley for the past 69 years, and the son of Alvah F. and Florence (Joslyn) Hubley.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his six children, Beth Raymond of Nashua, N.H., Martha Palmer and Eric Hubley of Northborough, William Hubley of Upton, Steve Hubley of Millbury, Michael Hubley of North Grafton, and Justin Hubley of Hopedale, along with nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Richard Hubley, and his siblings, Jean (Hubley) Steiner and George A. Hubley.

In compliance with current coronavirus restrictions the funeral service will be private with a burial held at Southborough Rural Cemetery. The family will hold a memorial service when allowed to do so. Arrangements are under the care of the Morris Funeral Home of Southborough.

Gail M. Sullivan, 79 MARLBOROUGH - Gail M. Sullivan, 79, of Marlborough died

May 16, 2020 at River Terrace Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center, Lancaster, after a lengthy illness.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Frank J. Sullivan of Marlborough; three sons, Frank P. Sullivan and his wife Meryl of Littleton, Maine, Michael J. Sullivan of New York, and David F. Sullivan of Marlborough; a daughter, Karen E. Sullivan of Leominster; two grandchildren, Rothery and Damien Sullivan, both of Littleton, Maine; a sister, Linda Tosti and her husband Rev. Anthony Tosti of New York; and her brother, John Musacchio and his wife Celia of New York.

A private graveside service will be held in the family lot in Evergreen Cemetery, Marlborough. Short & Rowe Funeral Home of Marlborough is assisting with arrangements.

Barbara Aucoin, 67 HUDSON Barbara Jane (Decker) Aucoin, 67, of Hudson, formerly of Waltham, passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by her family, on May 15, 2020. She leaves her beloved husband of 47 years, Jean A. Aucoin.

In addition to her beloved husband, she was also survived by her four children, Jennifer M. Aucoin of Presque Isle, Maine, Lisa M. Aucoin of Waltham, Aimee T. Ryan and her husband John of Milford, and Michael J. Aucoin and his wife Meghan of Hudson; five siblings, Kathy Weber and her husband Herb, Nancy Jo Decker, Patti Decker and her husband Joe Gorczyca, Mary Ellen Botticello and her husband Henry, and Wilfred E. Decker Jr.; three grandchildren, Christopher M. Aucoin and Grace E.M. Aucoin and Samantha N. Ryan; and many nieces and nephews. She was also predeceased by her brother, William E. Decker, and her granddaughter, Emily J. May. Due to current COVID-19 pandemic restrictions, services will be private. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at a later time. Tighe Hamilton Regional Funeral Home is honored to be assisting with her arrangements.

Sr. Lena Salois, 95 A Sister of St. Anne

MARLBOROUGH - Sr. Lena Salois, 95, (Sr. Eva Marie), a Sister of St. Anne, died May 14, 2020 in Alliance Health at Marie Esther Center in this city. Born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, she was the middle child of seven born to Thomas and Eva (Beauchesne) Salois.

Sister Lena was predeceased by her parents and her siblings, Lillian Lussier, Brother Eugene Salois, SC, Juliette Poisson, Norbert and Normand Salois. She leaves to grieve her sister, Constance Audette, nieces and nephews, extended family and her religious family of the Sisters of St. Anne.

In accord with current restrictions due to the pandemic, burial services are private. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Collins Funeral Home of Marlborough.

Barbara A. DiPasquale, 72 MARLBOROUGH - Barbara A. DiPasquale, 72, of Marlborough died May 12, 2020 at UMass Memorial Hospital in Worcester. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Beverly (Chase) DiPasquale.

Barbara is survived by her cousins, Debbie Gardner of Marlborough, Ken Gardner and his wife Kimberly of Marlborough, Kelley Carrasco and her wife Ana of Oakland, Calif., and Nick Dedecko and his wife Deb of Northborough; the family cats, Dusty, Bucky and Meadow; and dachshund Mandy.

Funeral services for Barbara will be held privately by her family. Arrangements are under the direction of the Slattery Funeral home, Inc. of Marlborough.

Barbara E. Shanley, 85 NORTHBOROUGH - Barbara E. (O’Keefe) Shanley, formerly of Northborough, passed away peacefully at home in Huntersville, N.C., on May 13, 2020.

She was 85 years old. Barbara was the devoted wife of the late Edward C. Shanley for 56 years, and was preceded in death by her sister, Mabel (O’Keefe) Winslow of Maryland.

She leaves behind her loving children, Kevin Shanley and his wife Maryanne of Hollis, N.H., David Shanley and his wife Patty of North Carolina, and Michael Shanley and his wife Kathy of Florida; her grandchildren, Bradley, Ashley, Zach, Gavin, Brittany, Ronan, and Maura; her great-

grandson, Oliver; and nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Private graveside service will be at the Howard Street Cemetery in Northborough.

Barbara J. Sullivan, 91 HUDSON - Barbara J. (Morin) Sullivan, 91, of Hudson, formerly of Marlborough, died May 15, 2020 at her home in Hudson. She was the daughter of the late Ludger and Lillian (Morel) Morin and the wife of the late David B. Sullivan.

She is survived by her son, David Sullivan and his wife Kathleen of Alexandria, Va.; her grandchildren, Ryan Sullivan of Springfield, Va., Christine Sullivan of Boynton Beach, Fla., and Colleen (Sullivan) Degenhardt of Alexandria, Va.; and her great-grandsons, Tucker Degenhardt, Turner Degenhardt and Treyson Degenhardt of Alexandria, Va. She is also survived by her nieces and nephews, Ronald Morin, Donna Morin, Holly (Morin) DeGroote, Dorothy Sykes and Elizabeth Shaw.
