By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - Episcopal Church of the Nativity Pastor Chad McCabe is not only committed to his church community in Northborough, but continues his ministry as chaplain in the Massachusetts Army National Guard 101st Artillery based in Brockton. He has been called to duty amid the COVID-19 crisis and currently is serving at the Soldiers’ Home in Holyoke, where a high number of veterans have died of the virus.

McCabe is a veteran who served in Iraq and said he has a big heart for the military.

His time with the National Guard gives him the opportunity to serve at the state and federal level.

“It’s not all about deploying overseas,” he said. “We

help to respond to the needs of local communities. I am proud to be able to serve the veterans.”

McCabe feels that deployment has helped to shape him as a person.

“When you have seen a lot, you find a way to stay positive and more focused on the situation on hand,” he said.

service in the National Guard.

He started at the Soldiers’ Home on March 14 and works five days a week. A typical day includes offering daily worship services to those of all and no faiths, making rounds, holding office hours for counseling, and checking in with nursing stations and patients. In addition to chaplains, the National Guard assists medical staff and food services.

There are very strict protocols to follow regarding wearing personal protective equipment and there is a decontamination process after each shift.

McCabe said the difference between his role as pastor and National Guard chaplain is that he is reaching a larger audience outside of his congregation who may or may not have a religious tradition.

The COVID-19 crisis has not only changed McCabe’s schedule, but it has also changed Church of the Nativity’s services and programs.

Live virtual gatherings on Sunday mornings are being held, as well as story times and music programs. Home outreach is important and includes communion kits being delivered to homes.

“The church building is closed, but the church is open,” said McCabe. “More folks are participating in worship than before. The Church is adapting to the environment. The Church will find ways to stay connected and to minister.”

Amid all the changes that COVID-19 has created, McCabe has noticed the positive outcomes.

“Closings happened at the start of Lent - a time we are called to slow down and be more intentional,” he said.

“Storms pass. They don’t last forever. Focus on what you’re called to do at the moment and do your best.”

McCabe was called to serve as Senior Pastor at the Church of Nativity in the fall of 2016 and arrived in Northborough with his wife Karen and son Ethan. He was previously ministering in Denver, Co. Slow and steady REGION – After the Baker-Polito Administration released their details for the four part Reopening Massachusetts plan, some are understandably upset that certain types of businesses can still not re-open during the Phase 1. But as Gov. Baker has said all along, he is basing his decisions on science and data, in order to prevent a catastrophic influx of COVID-19 cases that would overwhelm healthcare facilities. It is the administration’s hope that a careful and thoughtful strategy to re-open the commonwealth will help ensure that cases of COVID-19 will continue on a downward trend.

To the Editor: For the past 12 years I have been a Realtor. I began my real estate career during the financial crisis of 2008. At the time I did not know better and had made up my mind that I would Letters succeed in real estate. I just closed a business and to the Editor was deeply in debt. I am grateful I have an inbred work ethic that supersedes any skills I may have lacked. The first half of my real estate career I worked between 70-80+ hours a week. I had a steep learning curve, debts to repay and become buoyant again. I am not special, but I am relentless. That is what most people do when their back is against the wall.

COVID-19 is all encompassing, horrible virus that has wreaked havoc on many peoples’ health, lively hood, finances, and the global economy. Towns and municipalities have been shut down, industries have been desolated and the financial markets have tumbled. The impact is world-wide. I am sure there will be people who need to relocate, downsize, upsize, and recover from the consequences of this virus. This virus has changed our mindsets. We can create a whole new life for ourselves.

During this shut down I have seen the kindness of people helping their neighbors; making sure they have food, something to do and stay occupied while maintaining social distancing and isolation. I have witnessed employees at the grocery store helping those that are having difficulty, be it a physical limitation or taking money out of their own pockets to help pay for food. Talk about mindset!

Many of our friends, neighbors, and clients have endured personal loss, professional ruin and a feeling of desperation but are relentless.

I am deeply thankful for all the people who take care of the ill, the elderly, restock our shelves at the market, deliver our mail and pick up our trash. The list goes on and on who are more than doing their part to keep us going and inspired during this strange and difficult time.

Local musician and open mic host now livestreams ‘Kitchen Coffee Jams’ Mike Melendez , left, and right, wearing contemporary shopping gear

By Ed Karvoski Jr. Contributing Writer HUDSON/MARLBOROUGH – Singer, songwriter and multiinstrumentalist Mike Melendez of Marlborough typically networks with fellow musicians while performing at clubs throughout the region and open mic hosting at Medusa Brewing Company in Hudson. That was his routine before clubs closed due to the coronavirus pandemic stay-athome order.

Now, Melendez practices social distancing while social networking. He’s livestreaming “Kitchen Coffee Jams” on his personal Facebook page.

“My mindset is to bring a little bit of light to people’s day in dark times,” he said. “I play music all daylong at my house – I’ve got nothing else to do, so I might as well just play on my phone and let people listen.”

Growing up in Marlborough, Melendez began singing as well as playing bass, drums, guitar and saxophone from elementary to middle schools. He participated in choirs, drama club and a rock band while attending Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School, where he graduated in 2001.

His eclectic musical interests developed further while studying at Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa, Calif.

“I’m not claiming to be a classical guitarist at all, but I do have training in that department,” he noted. “I love classic rock and blues, but if I had the opportunity to be in a band again I’d want to play reggae music.”

Melendez returned to Massachusetts from California in 2012. A few years later, he began working at Medusa Brewing Company as entertainment/art manager and host of its open mic every other Thursday.

Prior to the stay-at-home order, Medusa’s last open mic was held March 5. Melendez’s last club gig took place March 15 at Lost Shoe Brewing and Roasting Company in Marlborough.

Soon afterward, he launched “Kitchen Coffee Jams,” costumed with a unique wardrobe borrowed from his fiancée Mo Dizz.

“I noticed other musicians were playing livestreams at night or late afternoon,” Melendez recalled. “I thought

playing in the morning would be fun, so I grabbed my fiancée’s bathrobe. I’m trying to distract people, make them laugh and start their day off better.”

His livestreams are daily at 10:30 a.m., except Tuesdays and Saturdays.

“Livestream is a new territory for me,” he acknowledged.

“Some days I plan it out and make a list of songs to play.

Other days I just make my cup of coffee at 10 o’clock, then hit ‘start’ at 10:30 and wing it.”

Additionally, his Facebook shares include art- and musicrelated announcements and livestreams from his extensive network of business colleagues.

Among other timeline posts is a selfie depicting Melendez wearing protective goggles and a respirator mask with the comment: “Food shopping 2020 – Hope this trend fades out, not a good look!” Taking social distancing seriously, he ventured to a supermarket for his first time in nearly three weeks. Two of his colleagues in the entertainment industry have the coronavirus.

“I’ll be precautious and look ridiculous,” Melendez said of his contemporary shopping gear.

For the “Kitchen Coffee Jams,” he accompanies himself on acoustic guitar. Plans are underway for an evening livestream with more of the instruments that he plays.

His wardrobe for the evening livestream is to be determined.

“Someone told me when we get back into the real world of normal life that I should wear the bathrobe for the first open mic,” Melendez shared. “I don’t know – I think the bathrobe is a stay-at-home thing.”

Public hearing set for proposed 188 residential development on Route 20 East

MARLBOROUGH – City Councilors have acknowledged there have been numerous concerns from residents regarding a proposed 188-unit residential development at 339 Boston Post Road (Route 20 East) known as the McGee property. As such, there is a public hearing scheduled for Monday, June 8.

Memorial Day celebrations to be suspended throughout region

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY - Board of Selectmen chair Maurice DePalo announced at the May 12 Board meeting that there will be no public Memorial Day celebrations in the town which includes the annual parade and other forms of traditional gatherings.

“Because of the coronavirus pandemic and social distancing protocols that are in place, Governor Baker and Secretary

of Veteran Affairs Francisco Urena has ordered that there will be no public municipal events held on Memorial Day, May 25,” DePalo said.

Local Veterans Services Agent Justin Sousa stated in an email that Urena made the recommendation in late April that cities and towns should not hold traditional Memorial Day celebrations.

“In lieu of traditional events, the towns of Shrewsbury and Northborough, Westborough,

and Grafton are working to create an alternative digital Memorial Day experience prior to the holiday, tailored to each town respectively, that will be broadcast on May 25 for viewing through cable access and social media,” Sousa said.

“Flags will be placed upon graves as normal, by people wearing PPE and observing social distancing protocols.”

An online petition against the project (change.org) had 750 supporters as of May 13.

In addition, there have been Facebook posts encouraging concerned residents to contact their city councilors.

The online petition includes concerns regarding loss of green space, wetland areas and increased traffic on Route 20. The farm property where horses could be seen for years is known to many as the McGee Veterinary Clinic/Farm.

Councilor David Doucette noted that many residents in his ward have contacted him regarding their concerns with the proposed development.

“My respect to all who have expressed their opinions (on this matter) and there are some significant issues that need to be addressed,” he said.

Westborough creates COVID-19 Community Fund to support residents in need

By Catherine Twing Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - Westborough, like virtually every community in the commonwealth, has an increased number of residents in need due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

To respond to these diverse needs, Westborough put together a task force to determine the best way to help. After weeks of planning, this group has established the Westborough COVID-19 Community Fund.

The fund’s mission is to support residents in Westborough who are disproportionately affected by the Coronavirus outbreak.

Shelby Marshall, Westborough selectman and active member of the task force, explained that the fund is intended to address the needs of today, but also be flexible to address future, unknown needs.

“We have heard of food insecurity and folks who were struggling. We fully anticipate that those needs will continue to grow and change as the economy starts to open up but isn’t fully there,” she said. “The fund will be a way of coming together to help and address the immediate needs and also address needs we can’t even anticipate.”

The task force is comprised of representatives from the Board of Selectmen, Town Manager’s Office, the Westborough Food Pantry, the Westborough Fire Department/Emergency Management, Westborough Connects, Westborough Interfaith Clergy, the Rotary Club of Westborough, Westborough Cares, the Westborough Senior Center, In Your Shoes, St. Luke’s Church Outreach and the Forbes-Kirkside Foundation.

Organizations such as In Your Shoes Westborough and St. Luke’s Church Outreach are members of Westborough Cares, a collection of community service organizations which work together to coordinate resources for those in need. They will take stock of needs in town and then request support from the community fund to help fill those needs.

“We want to help anyone who is in need, help with utilities, gift cards for gas, gift cards for food,” said Terry Galvin, co-founder and president of In Your Shoes Westborough. “[Residents] fill out a grant application. Does it match the mission? If it does we pass it along.”

The application is then re-

viewed by members of the task force and funds are distributed to the community service organizations to provide the assistance.

Marshall explained the intent is for all requests to come through community organizations first, to ensure needs are being met, but not duplicated.

If someone in the community has a need, they are asked to contact one of the community

service organizations or call the town’s community resource line at 508-871-5111. They will then be directed to the appropriate organization where they can apply for assistance.

To ensure donations are being properly managed, the fund is being hosted by the charitable arm of the Westborough Rotary Club.

“They were looking for an organization that could handle

the finances for them, looking for an outside organization to handle that,” said Westborough Rotary Club President Elliott Rittenberg.”

Businesses across the region have also displayed signs honoring the class of 2020, letting them know that they are indeed a very special group of young men and women.

In a “normal” year, St. John’s High School commemorates graduation with a special Mass and ceremony held at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester. This year, families instead gathered at Pioneer Field and then drove through the school’s Main Street location in a joyous caravan, as nearly 70 administrators cheered them on.

Volunteers created personalized lawn signs for every member of the graduating class of Assabet Valley Regional Technical High School and placed them in their yards.

School Committee votes to refund fees and tuition due to pandemic school shut-down An estimated $500,000 to be refunded

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY – Families who have children in the public school district will soon be refunded a portion of the fees and tuition they had paid for prior to the pandemic.

Dr. Joseph Sawyer, superintendent of schools and Patrick Collins, assistant superintendent for finance and operations, presented to the School Committee at their May 13 meeting, a recommendation of approval of refunds of tuition and fees paid for optional programming and services that were not provided after the closure of schools due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The School Committee voted unanimously in favor of the proposal.

“There are many legal regulations that the district must abide by that make issuing refunds more complicated and labor intensive than we would like. However, while this inconvenience may slow down our ability to provide refunds, I do not believe that it should

be a factor in determining what is ‘fair,’” Sawyer explained. “I think it is important that all families who are owed a refund benefit from refunds that are issued in proportion to what they paid.”

There was the suggestion of parents being required to apply for a refund. This could have allowed families who feel that they don’t need the refund (and would like the district to benefit) to choose not to apply for a refund. However, in consideration of a significant number of families having difficulties for a variety of reasons, creating situations and barriers in administering a program would not be the most equitable solution.

Sawyer explained where refunds can be expected: Food service: ​M oney on account is carried forward to the next school year although graduating seniors with more than $10 on account may receive a refund or have their balance transferred to a sibling in a lower grade. ​ Transportation fee: ​Recommendation ​that each family

receive a refund of $100 per fee (one-third of the total fee of $310 allowing for costs.)

Extended school care: ​Recommendation that families receive a refund for days families had paid for in March when schools were closed when their child otherwise would have been provided with care. ​Families who already receive an income-based discount for tuition would receive a prorated refund amount.

Preschool and full-day kindergarten: ​Recommendation that families receive a refund representing 12 percent of the cost of the yearly tuition they had already paid when school closure began​. 0.2 percent will cover costs associated with the refund. Families who already receive an income-based discount for tuition would receive a prorated refund amount.

After school activities program: Recommendation is to refund fees proportionally according to how many sessions were provided, either in person or remotely.

Kids challenge bakes up quarantine fun

By Liz Nolan Contributing Writer NORTHBOROUGH - An extra dose of creativity has been necessary to stay connected with friends and family, celebrate special occasions, and entertain the kids since the social distancing restrictions went into effect in March. Northborough resident Marile Borden has been holding a virtual baking challenge among friends each week to occupy some time and encourage her daughter’s love of baking.

Borden’s 13 year old daughter Lia loves to bake and is a big fan of the Kids Baking Championship on the Food Network.

“I decided to make up a baking challenge for her,” said Borden. “When I mentioned it on Facebook, a bunch of friends responded that their kids would love to do something like that— so an idea was born.”

The weekly challenges take place on Tuesdays and announced on Facebook. Bakers are given a deadline to submit a photo of their creation with a

“I try to leave a little bit of flexibility since part of the challenge is working with ingredients that the bakers have available to them,” said Borden.

The judges are Borden’s Facebook followers. Photos of the entries are posted and winners are chosen based on the categories of Most Impressive, Most Loved, Makes us Smile, and Most Want to Eat. Themes for the challenge have included St. Patrick’s Day cupcakes, Edible Zoo, Dessert Sandwiches, Celebration Cakes,

Tie-Dyed Desserts, World’s Best Cookie, a space theme of Out of this World, and a Mother’s Day Bouquet.

“When it comes to judging, obviously we can’t taste any of the creations, so it is really about how it looks,” said Borden. “I try to always create themes with that in mind.”

On average, there are about 12-15 kids ages 9-16 participating each week and over 100 people voting on their favorites.

The participant living the furthest away is from California.

“I am getting so much positive feedback — from the kids, the parents and the judges,” said Borden. “The kids look forward to it each week. It breaks up the monotony a bit. The parents love that their kids have something to do that doesn’t involve staring at a screen. The judges take their roles very seriously.”

Borden said she plans on continuing the challenge as long as the kids are interested in participating.

“I am enjoying it as much as they are,” she said. “It has been such fun to see the creativity, the totally unexpected ways the kids interpret the challenge, and the joy that it brings both the bakers and the judges.”

Shrewsbury couple surprised with curbside 50th wedding anniversary party

SHREWSBURY – In an age of the coronavirus people have become accustomed to curbside delivery of almost anything but when it is a wedding anniversary party? Well, that doesn’t happen every day, especially for a 50th golden anniversary. But that is just what happened on May 8 when friends of Charron and Lee Schonborg showed up at the couple’s home to surprise them.

Patricia Ahearn was one of Charron’s close girlfriends who helped to organize the party.

All have been friends for over 50 years, having graduated from the Shrewsbury Public School system in 1968.

Together, with husbands in tow, they brought balloons and a catered lunch complete with mini Bundt cakes, to celebrate.

“It was just perfect,” Ahearn said. “With masks on and appropriate safe distance we

By Dakota Antelman Contributing Writer HUDSON - Settling into each of their own personal COVID-19 quarantines, Hudson High School teachers quickly banded together last month to send a message to their students - “We Care.”

The words came in the form of two videos featuring the majority of the school’s teachers, administrators, and other staff. The first spoke broadly to all students. The

second, meanwhile, addressed the senior class of 2020, which has lost many of its promised “senior spring” activities, including graduation, due to COVID-19.

“We wanted to get something out there pretty quick just to sort of say ‘Hey, we’re here, we care about you, we miss you,’” Media Teacher Lynda Chilton said of the process. “We wanted to make that initial connection.”

Chilton helped lead the video projects, editing both videos and

working with colleague Kerry Bartlett as Pam Porter, another fellow teacher, wrote a script for the senior video, and collected individual video submissions from project participants.

“As soon as we had an idea of what we were thinking about, she just rallied the troops,” Chilton said of Porter’s work.

This substantial outreach came just over a month after district schools hastily closed in late March.

Plans approved to honor WHS seniors

By Jennifer L. Grybowski Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH – Westborough Public Schools Superintendent Amber Bock met with the Board of Selectmen (BOS) and Board of Health (BOH) Tuesday night to seek approval to move forward with the planning of activities for graduating seniors.

“I am currently working with the school administration and a wide range of volunteers to think about recognition for and the appropriate closure of the 2020 year for the seniors,” she said.

Bock reported that conversations with seniors yielded an overwhelming sentiment to defer graduation ceremonies to another time. That said, she noted that there are opportunities to “celebrate in a controlled manner.”

There will be a “senior week” held with a variety of taped events, including an online baccalaureate ceremony.

One “in person” event Bock is helping to create is a memory board stroll, tentatively scheduled for Saturday, June 6.

“The memory board is a longstanding tradition to present the trajectory of the student over the years,” she said.

The boards would be set up throughout the campus, and families as a unit can come together and walk on a one-way path through camps maintaining social distancing. She said there will be candles and music along the path.

“It will create the opportunity for our families to have some meaningful closure,” Bock said.

Only Westborough graduates and the immediate family they live with would be invited. She said staff, administration and the police department would work together to provide a safe experience for families.

Then, on Sunday, June 7, a car parade would be scheduled.

Students would first be invited to come to campus and have

administration deliver to them materials to be returned, as well as gifts from project graduation. This would also be an opportunity for the students to return any items such as technology or textbooks. Then, the students would drive on a predetermined route in a parade fashion throughout the town.

The BOS and BOH were both in favor of the plans and gave their support to Bock.

In other school-related news at the meeting, there was a discussion about increasing signage at the track as the weather gets nicer to make sure there is appropriate social distancing.

“Lots of senior citizens like to walk the track because it’s a safe, flat surface,” Bock said. “I recognize it takes ongoing management and communication.”

She said she would also try to incorporate a better use of the upper field, recognizing that families will be likely looking for more outdoor spaces to utilize as the summer approaches.

After initially sitting in limbo with optional “enrichment work” available for students, the district switched to mandatory remote learning when Gov. Charlie Baker announced in mid-April that inperson classes would be cancelled through the rest of the school year.

“We were trying to figure out the right time to ask teachers,” Chilton said, saying she understood the stress teachers themselves were under as they also converted their lesson plans to fit the online landscape. “I was trying to figure when they had the ability to do this extra thing.”

Chaotic as the times are, though, Chilton said she and Porter saw overwhelming interest from coworkers.

“They wanted to do this,” Chilton said. “They wanted to express their emotions for what was happening.”

Even Chilton’s own editing process is emblematic of this.

Living in New Braintree, deep

in the woods of western Worcester County, Chilton has no access to broadband internet. The DSL connection she’s left with, in turn, does not allow her to quickly download and reupload the types of large internet files she worked with on these video projects.

Undeterred, though, Chilton says she drove daily to the town of Paxton, 20 minutes away, where she edited video from the front seat of her car in a Dunkin Donuts parking lot with free WiFi. With overwhelmingly positive reaction from seniors in particular, Chilton said it’s all been worth it.

“They’ve lost that huge sense of closure for their academic life and their social life,” she said. “[Knowing that, we] wanted to reach out.”

School Committee reviews feedback on remote learning survey

By Melanie Petrucci Senior Community Reporter SHREWSBURY -Assistant School Superintendent Amy Clouter recently shared results with the School Committee from a recent survey sent to the district’s families to assess their experiences with remote learning.

Remote learning was created to keep students connected to teachers and classmates with a focus on providing support to students while they learn at home.

Once Gov. Charlie Baker issued orders for all public and private schools to close through the end of the academic year in response to COVID-19, the district quickly pivoted to this protocol.

“I want begin by really thanking Shrewsbury families for their feedback, as facilitators of your children’s learning, parents are in the best position to share the impact of the pandemic on our students,” Clouter stated.

Surveys were geared to the three grade levels: elementary, middle and high school. Each

She said that one of the important things about the survey was that it not only represents what is in peoples’ minds but also what is in their hearts. She also said that the survey taps into what is going on in families’ lives.

“The survey reflects our feelings about change and the thing about change is we don’t like it and in the case of remote learning it’s an important thing that we can’t control,” Clouter said.

Relevant to successes for the pre-k through fourth grade parents, 86 percent of families described communication from the school as “just right.” However, families felt that there

wasn’t enough connectivity.

On average, only slightly more than half of parents described remote learning plans as working ‘well’ or ‘very well’ mainly because students and families are missing in-person interactions.

In grades 5 through 12, 83 percent of parents stated that they were aware of and were able to access their child’s learning plans.

According to a report Clouter shared with the School Committee prior to the meeting, “Another positive revealed by the data has to do with student interactions with educators.

Most respondents agreed that their child(ren)’s teachers are available to answer questions.”

Challenges at the middle school level include understanding the expectations of assignments while stress was of concern for those in high school.

Some of the survey key findings include technology support and learning new platforms such as Zoom, SeeSaw, etc. It also found a concern with interactivity or more “live” time with educators and that some students are not showing up or

completing work.

“We need to engage with the staff as much as we do with the families and we have to plan ahead,” Clouter said.

School Committee member Jason Palitsch referenced the inequities associated with remote learning.

“While we can never be a complete equalizer, when kids are able to be in the same classroom with one another obviously the teacher is able to some extent create an equal learning environment,” he said. “When students are left at home those inequities have a highlighter drawn over them…there are some things that we will not be able to replicate in a remote environment.”

Westborough School Committee approves budget cuts

By Jennifer L. Grybowski Contributing Writer WESTBOROUGH - The Westborough School Committee made yet another round of budget cuts at their meeting Wednesday night, bringing the total amount cut from the beginning of the process to over $1 million.

Superintendent Amber Bock recommended a reduction of $375,535 for a new base number of $54,705,161, “We are facing pretty serious revenue concerns over the next year and a half,” Bock said.

“I think this is a number that we brought forward that is is thoughtful and well-framed.”

The reductions include $128,195 in salaries and $247,340

in expenses.

Bock said regarding salary line items, she was seeking to lighting down the hiring profile to bring in less expensive staff in some positions as is possible, and defer the hiring of some positions later in the year.

Due to concerns the Town Meeting will be pushed back even further, the committee also discussed the benefits of submitting a 1/12th budget, as the rest of the town entities are doing to get through this time.

There was also discussion of how the budget might change if school does not open in the fall; for example, transportation costs would drop dramatically, but there might be a need for more technology services.

“I think we are going to be

discussing this budget for a really long time,” committee member Kristen Vincent said.

Director of Curriculum & Assistant Superintendent Daniel Mayer agreed.

“We can’t do anything different,” he said. “We can’t look into a crystal ball and know when we go to school and therefore we don’t know how many days or moths of credit we might get. it’s an impossible thing to know.”

The committee also voted to accept a $106,000 reduction to the kindergarten warrant article. There is extra funding in that account due to savings in consulting and electricity, Bock said, and the reduction would allow the district to hold funds in the kindergarten revolving fund to put against salaries for next year.

‘Scholarly distancing,’ Sons and Daughters of Italy celebrate scholarship winners

MARLBOROUGH - Members of the Sons and Daughters of Italy Lodge #240 informally took over Marlborough’s Arnold St. May 14 for an abbreviated version of their annual scholarship ceremony.

Honoring Marlborough students Cameron Sinopoli and Dinh Ton, along with Quabbin High School student Cassandra Harrington, the event featured brief comments from Lodge President Dan Caruso and benefited from a special appearance by Mayor Arthur Vigeant.

“We’ve all been working hard to keep everybody at least feeling like they’re a graduate in 2020,” Caruso said after the festivities. “We felt like this was the best way we could do that.”

With COVID-19 still rampant in the community, lodge members and event attendees spilled into an otherwise empty street, keeping distant from one another to avoid transmission.

Such social distancing had forced the Lodge to change plans from its annual scholarship tradition of hosting a dinner in recipients’ honor at the city’s Welly’s Restaurant downtown.

Though the socially distanced ceremony took place in front of her house, she had to remain inside as a precaution as she recovered from a non-COVID-19 related recent hospitalization.

Likewise, it’s closed school for graduates themselves and forced the cancellation of other spring ceremonies often dedicated to students who specifically qualify for awards and scholarships like the Sons and Daughters of Italy’s three, $1,000 recognitions.

As weeks have drawn on, uncertainty about what this summer holds for local students drove the push for this innovative kind of fanfare.

“We had to do something to make sure they had their award because we didn’t know what the high school would be able to do,” Caruso explained.

Calling the event an exercise of “scholarly distancing” Caruso commended graduates for their perseverance in an unprecedented time and encouraged them as they continued towards their futures.

That latter part is something he’s always done at these types of events. Now, though, he’s especially grateful to have been able to say those words.

“We’ve done this for a while,” he said. “This year was just a little extra special.”

COMMUNITYOBITUARIES Ann E. O’Connor SHREWSBURY - On Saturday, May 9th, Ann E. O’Connor, also affectionately known as ‘Nan,’ was laid to rest in Mountain View Cemetery in Shrewsbury, next to her beloved husband, Frank, known to many as ‘Papa.’ When she died on Wednesday, May 6, 2020, her heart was full of memories of a life made joyful by sharing grace with others.

Born in Boston on August 12, 1933, Ann was the daughter of George and Anna (Lydon) O’Brien. She grew up in Saint Mark’s Parish in Dorchester and graduated as class valedictorian from the former Jeanne d’Arc Academy in Milton. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Regis College in 1954.

That summer, at the invitation of a mutual friend, she met Belmont native Francis P. O’Connor on Cape Cod, and they married on September 10, 1955. In June 1962, after living for a time in Medford and Grafton, they made Shrewsbury their home.

Frank, who became a longtime Justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court after serving on the Superior Court, was Ann’s beloved husband and best friend. Ann and Frank partnered throughout life and grew ever closer in love.

They faced many challenges together, including Frank’s Alzheimer’s disease. Ann loved and cared for Frank until his death in 2007.

In addition to Frank, her parents, and his parents, Ann has joined her brothers John L. and George E. O’Brien and sisters-in-law Joan and Mary Frances O’Connor in heaven.

Ann leaves ten children: Kathleen A. O’Connor (Thomas Kelly) of Brunswick, Maine, F. Patrick O’Connor Jr. (Elisa) of East Falmouth, Brien T. O’Connor (Susan) of West Newton, and Maureen T. Chamberlain (Richard), Ellen M. O’Connor (Michael Haire), Ann E. O’Connor, Jane O’Connor Lizotte (David), Joyce O’Connor Davidson (Andrew), Thomas J. O ’C o n n o r ( L e i g h ) o f Shrewsbury and Matthew P. O’Connor (Susan), of Pacific Palisades, California; 31 loving grandchildren and one great-

grandchild; and two close friends, Jennifer Granquist and Sue Chaput Bauer, who lived with the family for years and rounded Nan’s bunch to a dozen; her sister-in-law, Carlotta O’Brien of Winchester; three nieces and a nephew.

Armand L. Morin, 93 GRAFTON/ N O R T H BRIDGE - Armand L. Morin, 93, passed away May 5, 2020 at Saint Camillus Healthcare Center after a lengthy illness. His wife of 57 years, Olive T. (Drolet), passed away in 2009.

Joann A. Cariglia, 81 WORCESTER - Joann A. (D’Amico) Cariglia, 81, of Worcester, passed away peacefully on Thursday, May 7, 2020 at Notre Dame LongTerm Care Center from complications after contracting COVID-19.

Joann is survived by four daughters, Gina M. Cappabianca and her husband Paul of Worcester, Jody A. Tsihlis and her husband Philip of Shrewsbury, Lisa M. Caliendo and her husband Robert of Littleton, and Jill A. Cariglia of Portland, Maine; five grandchildren, Paul J. Cappabianca of Marlborough, Steven Cappabianca of Worcester, Anna Maria Tsihlis of Northborough, Giana Deer and her husband Greg of Amherst, N.H., and Nicole Caliendo of Boston; one greatgrandchild, Jonathan Andrew Pickard; a sister, Patricia E. Claud Davis, 95 WESTBOROUGH - Claud Myron Davis, 95, passed away May 5, 2020, at The Rose Monahan Hospice Home in Worcester.

He was born on Aug. 23, 1924, in Pine Valley Miss., the son of the late Claud Clifton Davis and Anna Kelly Davis.

Mr. Davis was preceded in death by his wife, Ms. Virginia Nenni Davis; his daughter, Stephanie Deitzer (Jim); brothers Roy Davis, James Ray Davis; and sisters Lavelle Johnson, Juanita Miles, Helen Watson, and twin sister Midge Dulaney.

He is survived by his son, Claud Philip Davis (Rebecca) and his three grandchildren, Jennifer Davis, Claud Matthew Davis, and Thomas Davis of Southborough.

Catherine A. Rossetti,100 SHREWSBURY/ DENNISPORT - Catherine A. (DiPierro) Rossetti, 100, longtime resident of Shrewsbury and Dennisport, passed away peacefully May 8, 2020 with her devoted daughters at her side after a short period of declining health. Catherine rejoins in heaven her husband of 62 years Frank E. Rossetti who passed away in 2005; two sisters, Ida Gallo and Lucretia Porro; and two brothers, Michael and Domenic DiPierro.

Catherine leaves behind her three devoted children, her two daughters, Floranne Reagan of Dennisport and Boston, Mary Frances Rozak and her husband Richard Jubinville of Boylston, and Michael Rossetti and his wife Lisa of Charlton; four grandchildren, Benjamin and Gregory Rozak, Francis Rossetti, and Lauren Thibeault; one great-grandchild, Gabriela Thibeault; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends. She was predeceased by her beloved baby, Edward.

Funeral services for Catherine were held May 14 at the Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel of Worcester, and she was buried next to her husband at Mountain View Cemetery in Shrewsbury.
