TIME FOR TEA AND TALK have launched a group in Clarkston to offer a lifeline of friendship to older people who live in the area.

“Everyone had a lovely time at our first gathering. One lady had admitted to being a little apprehensive beforehand, which is very understandable and something we really try to reassure people about, but said her driver very quickly put her at ease and she had a lovely afternoon and is already looking forward to next month.

A new initiative aimed at enriching the lives of socially isolated older people has launched in Clarkston and is appealing for local hosts. the home of Clarkston’s Fiona Griffiths.

The Contact the Eldery group brings tea, cake and laughter into the lives of socially isolated older people.

The four older people were collected by a volunteer driver, and the same driver will pick them up each month and take them to parties in homes throughout the area.

There are currently 20 groups running around Glasgow and the surrounding areas and the initiative is shaping up to be a success in Clarkston.

A weightlifter from Newton Mearns set a new Scottish record at last month’s Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Lisa Tobias, 28 (pictured above), also took eighth place when she scored a recordbreaking total of 139 in the Women’s 48kg Clean and Jerk.

Lisa wrote on Instagram: “8th in the Commonwealth and a new Scottish Record... it really is a dream come true!

“Massive thanks to my coach Gordon for taking every step of this journey alongside me and getting us here.”

Luke Traynor, a former Newton Mearns High School pupil a member of Giffnock North Athletics Club has continued his impressive recent form

A young runner from Newton Mearns continued his impressive record-breaking streak when he won a recent 10-mile race.

Sarah Inglis, from Lothian, also set a course record and won the women’s race.

Luke Traynor claimed the Scottish 10-Mile title and beat the course record at the 56th Tom Scott Memorial Road Races at Strathclyde Park, Motherwell, in April.

Luke, a former pupil at Newton Mearns High School, said: “I was actually running at a controlled effort at the Tom Scott 10 Mile because my coach didn’t want me run it with 100 per cent after another recent race. However, it felt great to break the course record.”

Last year, we reported how Luke scored a record-breaking victory

in his first half marathon race in Manchester.

In February, at the Barcelona Half Marathon, Luke clocked 61.57 in only his second run over the distance. His half-marathon time is the third fastest ever by a Scottish runner.

In March, he competed in the World Half Marathon Championships in Valencia, where he finished second Brit and 38th overall in 62.38.

Luke, who is looking for sponsors so he can train and race to his best abilities, is tipped as a Scottish runner to look out for in the future.

He said: “This year, my goals were the world champs and, in August, the 10,000m in European Track and Field Championships in Berlin. My long-term goal is to compete at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. However, I am also looking for financial support because it is not easy to work while training and racing.”

£50K GRANT FOR SUPERKIDS A voluntary group that provides weekly club activities for children with additional support needs has been awarded a funding boost.

SupERkids was given £49,456 by the Young Start Grant Funding to allow them to further support more than 200 youngsters in East Renfrewshire.

The group, which is run by parents and is non-profit, offers a range of activities for young people who have special needs, both mental and physical, at the Isobel Mair School in Newton Mearns.

Nicky said: “One of the biggest costs is specialist staff support and this is where the grant will be most helpful. We are very grateful for the external funding that we have received over the years.”

ANIMAL MAGIC OPTING FOR AUTISM COURSE FOR 11-PLUS Emma added: “We are very proud to be involved in supporting The National Autistic Society and we hope this training will make the optical experience easier for people who are living with the condition.”

A club for older children with an interest in animals, wildlife and conservation has moved to new premises.

Anipals Glasgow now meets at Rouken Glen Pavilion, Rouken Glen Park, from 7pm to 8.30pm.

The not-for-profit youth club welcomes children aged 11-plus and aims to promote confidence and self-esteem through fun and educational activities.

On Monday May 14 the focus will be an Animal Magic Session. There are also two visits to Linn Park Equestrian Centre organised for this month on May 1 and 8 at 5pm.

The National Autistic Society was pleased to increase awareness of autism with an organisation that was proactively seeking to enable autistic people to have a positive experience in its stores.

The Society’s business development manager Sharlene Wright, said: “It has been an inspiring collaboration.

The National Autistic Society welcomes the open attitudes and minds with which Specsavers is seeking to enhance the lives of people on the autism spectrum.”

Staff at Specsavers Newton Mearns are taking courses, developed with the National Autistic Society, to support customers with autism.

The initiative aims to build knowledge about the lifelong development disability, while helping to improve the customer experience for people with autism and their carers.

The online learning modules cover understanding autism, communicating with people with autism, how autism can impact the senses and adjustments that stores can make.

It is being rolled out across all Specsavers’ stores nationwide.

Newton Mearns’ store director Emma Robb, said: “Autism affects more than one in 100 people and as our store is such a big part of the community, it is vital that we are able to communicate and support someone with the condition in the most effective way possible.”

The majority of retailers in the centre switch their store music off between 9am and 10am every morning so people with autism can shop in silence.

Members of the team are working through learning modules or completing the course.

BOOKWORMS MEET BOOKBUG FLOWER CLUB’S Renowned

reading mascot Bookbug surprised children across East Renfrewshire with visits to their nurseries and local libraries.

Busby Flower Club will welcome expert flower arranger Ann Morgan with her demonstration entitled, In the Pink, to this month’s meeting.

The group meets on May 22 at 7.30pm at the Redhurst Hotel, East Woodmains Road, Giffnock.

Kids were delighted to meet the yellow character at their Bookbug sessions in Busby, Clarkston and Newton Mearns’ libraries.

Bookbug also managed to drop in for a visit at Busby Nursery and Hazeldene Family Centre in Newton Mearns, to meet as many budding bookworms as possible.

Bookbug is a national programme that encourages parents to share and enjoy books with their children.

The regular Bookbug sessions are fun and free, introducing music to the very young using simple rhymes, songs and games and are held regularly at libraries in the area.

A spokesperson said: “We welcome both members and newcomers to our monthly get-togethers.”

NEW LEGO BAD GIRLS TAKE TO STAGE CLUB LANDS on May 19 at 2.30pm. Tickets for Thursday evening and Saturday matinee tickets are £15, and £16 on Friday and Saturday evenings.

Cast members getting ready for their May production of Bad Girls the Musical

A lego club for primary school aged children has started in Busby.

The new club runs at the White Cart on a Monday, once a month, from 7-8pm.

Organiser Scott Learmonth said: “We have been running for two years in East Kilbride and have gone from strength to strength.

“The first half of the class is free build. The second is a build challenge, where they work in two or threes or get lego and instructions to build at the class and take home.”

The show by EROS Musical Society – formerly East Renfrewshire Operatic Society – runs from May 17 to 19 and is based on the hit TV series, Bad Girls, which was set in a fictional Larkhall women’s prison.

After this performance, the society moves to the Village Theatre in East Kilbride for future productions.

The Bad Girls story focuses on the struggle of the inmates against corrupt prison guards. The plot has several twists and turns and there is an unexpected source of help for the prisoners as they try to fight the system.

Ian McAulay, president of EROS, said: “The musical is full of big songs and each character has their own story to tell. It’s a heady mix of emotion, both sadness and laughter, as the women fight against the evil within the system.”

INTERACTIVE THEATRE SHOWS Audiences are in for a treat this month as they become part of the performance, with two interactive shows at Eastwood Park Theatre.

A DAY FOR THE LASSIES Six female business owners from the Real Businesswomen of East Renfrewshire group are hosting A Day for the Lassies event.

Initially set up as a support group for women in business in the area, the local businesswomen have been meeting on a monthly basis to give support and advice to each other.

Member Isobel Garland Garcia from Clarkston, who owns Bag Kreations and Tartan Accessories, worked with Shellie Brennan from Couture 42 in Giffnock, Hailey Thomson from My Health Angel, Gillian Corr from Napchat, Arbonne consultant Hazel McBride and Martine Nadler from Tinies Glasgow Childcare service, to organise the day.

Isobel said: “The Real Businesswomen of East Ren Facebook group was set up by Shellie

as a support group for women in business.

“We started meeting up on a monthly basis to give support and advice to each other.

From the Facebook group we realised how many businesses were run by women in East Renfrewshire.”

The group organised A Day for the Lassies, incorporating 10 free taster workshops and featuring 18 stalls, a fashion show and a pamper room, with a créche on site so childcare is not an issue.

Isobel explained: “The day is a way to showcase and bring people’s attention to some of these fantastic local businesses. As women, we know that it is

Being in the heart disease capital of Europe, we need all the help we can get to reduce the risks of heart attack and stroke, the main causes of death and disability in Scotland.

The event, which is organised

DOUGH-N’T FEED THE DUCKS WITH BREAD Feeding the ducks is a fun activity but parents and children are warned of the perils of giving them bread.

Instead, the Rouken Glen Park website is suggesting that it’s a better idea to feed ducks healthier snacks such as bird seed, unfrozen peas, broccoli and other green vegetables. It’s the same for other ponds in parks across the city.

Bread is not a natural food for ducks and too much of it can make ducks fat, which means they can become too heavy to quickly fly away from predators like foxes.

A CHILD INSTRUCT This month: CAN THEIR OWN SOLICITOR? Once you have reached the age of sixteen you are considered to be an adult and have full legal capacity to manage your own affairs.

The Canal and River Trust has revealed that the bread encourages the growth of bacteria and algae, which can poison other species as well as attracting vermin.

The build up and decomposition of uneaten bread in local ponds also creates an unpleasant smell.

Rotting bread exacerbates naturally occurring surface algae, causing toxins tat are damaging to fish, and preventing sunlight reaching to underwater plants.

Worse still, throwing bread to the ducks can eventually lead to damage of entire ecosystems.

The bread eaten by birds creates more faeces, which has the same effect.

However, the Age of Legal Capacity (Scotland) Act 1991 provides that a person under the age of sixteen has legal capacity to instruct their own solicitor to represent their interests in pursuing or defending any civil proceedings, so long as they have a general understanding as to what it means to do so.

It is generally accepted that a person of twelve years of age or more is of sufficient age and maturity to have such understanding.

There is no automatic presumption that a child under twelve does not have appropriate understanding and therefore a solicitor may accept instructions from a child under that age in circumstances where they are satisfied that the relevant child has the necessary maturity.

Legal Aid can be made available to a child seeking to instruct a solicitor. Their financial eligibility is usually based on their parent’s financial resources.

However, in the event they have a contrary position to their parents, then they may apply for Legal Aid without having to provide that information.

SING-ALONG LIBRARY SESSIONS Members of a new singing group have been getting some unusual bookings recently as they have been performing in local libraries.

The bookshelves have been alive with the sound of music at East Renfrewshire libraries as adult singing groups meet to belt out some old favourites.

ÂŁ600K OF GOOD CAUSES at s A charity founded by a double organ transplant recipient has contributed an impressive ÂŁ600,000 to support good causes locally.

At the deepest part of the ocean, the pressure is 11,318 tons/sq metre, which is the same as the human body trying to support 50 jumbo jets.

East Renfrewshire Good Causes (ERGC) has handed out goods and services to almost 2,000 people since its conception 11 years ago.

Most recently, the charity has provided a recliner chair for an adult with severely impaired mobility; a power pack for an elderly residentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wheelchair to allow them to get out and about; and a dog cage to keep a beloved pet safe while the owner is rehabilitated in their home following a stroke.

ERGC was started by Russell MacMillan, 53, of Newton Mearns, his wife, Yvonne, and some of their friends while he was waiting for a joint kidney and pancreas transplant.

Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of eight, he was registered blind at 23. He had just eight per cent kidney

Inspired by his Christian faith, he decided to start a charity to give back to his local community.

For the previous three decades the race was part of the Polaroid 10k Road Race Series.

John Anderson, general manager of WDLT, said: “We are very proud to be delivering

the WD Leisure Vale of Leven 10k for a second time after the success of our first year of managing the race in 2017.

We are looking forward to welcoming all the participants to the race and we are sure it will be another fun and exciting day for all involved.”

The race, which raises money for the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS), could not go ahead without the support of sponsors, including Title Sponsor, Chivas Brothers, and Gold Sponsor, CPR Resurfacing Ltd. It is hereby agreed that: the placing by the Advertising Client of an Advertisement is deemed to be acceptance of these Conditions of Acceptance of Advertising. All advertisements in this publication must not contravene the Standards. Insertion of Advertisements and/or Editorial is strictly at the discretion of the Publisher. The Publisher shall not liable for any loss or damage incurred by the Advertising Client as a result of any failure, negligence or omission by any party in the course of the distribution or circulation of the Publication in which the Advertisement is scheduled to appear.

In the event of any error, misprint or omission by the Publisher in printing of an Advertisement, the Publisher will either re-insert the advertisement, adjust the cost or provide a refund. This does not apply if the Advertisement has been already been approved by the Advertising Client prior to the publication. The total liability of the Publisher for such an occurrence shall not exceed the amount of a full refund for that particular Advertisement.
