Local News – OCTOBER 2017

Fears grow for future of Geilston Gardens from the experienced staff and enthusiastic volunteers “In the walled garden you can be assailed by a riot of azaleas in the most vivid colours. It is like entering another world. Visitors come from home and abroad and their comments are full of praise.

A feasibility study into the future of Geilston Gardens is due to report this month and its findings could seal the fate of the 200 year old attraction. Despite having won tourism awards for its impressive horticultural features, the future of Geilston Gardens’ colourful walled area, the pretty meadow maze and flourishing kitchen plot, is in jeopardy. Situated near Cardross, it forms part of the former estate of the late Elizabeth Hendry, who bequeathed it and accompanying Geilston House to the National Trust for Scotland in 1991.

The extensive gardens, with their recently restored 40 foot MacKenzie & Moncur glasshouse, tranquil woodland walks, a burn edged with stunning Siberian iris and Japanese azaleas, and small waterfalls, opened to the public while the house was mothballed. But volunteers and locals now fear the entire estate could fall into the hands of private developers as the National Trust for Scotland claims it

Local volunteers and members of the community have formed a Friends of Geilston House and Garden Group. Allison Hillis, a Trust volunteer and group spokeswoman, called for the three aspects of the property – the house, garden and estate – to remain in their entirety. She told the CA: “Each area of the garden is outstanding at various times of the year. In July and August the kitchen garden attracts many keen gardeners who come to compare Geilston fruit and vegetables to their own and seek advice and help

For now, the Trust has agreed that the garden will reopen in March after it closes for the season in October. Also they are committing to the establishment of a forum or formal consultation process and are happy for Friends of Geilston to be involved. Geilston Gardens holds a gold award from the Green Tourism Business Scheme and is a four-star Scottish Tourist Board attraction.

Keith Halstead, the National Trust for Scotland’s Head of Special Projects, said: “There are longstanding issues at Geilston which need to be resolved. Whatever solution emerges for the future of the house may well affect the garden too. The Trust is keen to find options that work for everyone.

The team say: “We also have a variety of bake sales, can collections and bag packs organised. We are a tiny team of two staff and a handful of volunteers but we are passionate about our fundraising and we live to put our shop and our town, firmly in the spotlight . “We have raised over £20,000 in the 3 years we have been doing this and we are highly committed to making this year our best ever.” The October event follows wide ranging fundraising efforts in September which included a sponsored children’s bike ride, the first ever SU2C Festival and a Take That tribute night.

criMe, Food and news on Fest Menu Anne of Loudounville and ‘agricultural’ poet who is now poet in residence at the Royal Highland Show, will discuss his verse focusing on rural and farming life.

It looks as if the ever growing Cove and Kilcreggan Book Festival will be as star studded as ever as this local event makes its mark on the national literary scene. As we reported last month, Ian Rankin and Jon Snow are among the authors taking the stage this year. And for the first time there will be a food and drink theme at the two-day event in November, which will be held in Cove Burgh Hall for the fifth year. Jon Snow, the Channel 4 news anchor, will appear on Saturday November 25 to talk about his autobiography Shooting History.

Sarah Trevelyan, the former wife of Jimmy Boyle, who has written a memoir about their meeting, their prison romance and their marriage, will also appear on Saturday. Ian Rankin, the king of Scottish crime writing, is visiting the Rosneath Peninsula as part of the 30th anniversary celebrations of Inspector Rebus. Jim Carruth, the Glasgow Makar

Paul MacAlinden, the Scots born conductor who formed the National Youth Orchestra of Iraq in the midst of its war, has written about its birth and untimely death. He will also discuss his latest venture, setting up a chamber orchestra in Govan. On Sunday the hall will host a food and drink special with a range of Scottish chefs and writers on the menu. They include Rachel McCormack, a regular on Radio 4’s Kitchen Cabinet and Aasmah Mir, the host of R4’s Saturday Live and her sister Uzma who have spawned the website, Cracking Curries. Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow, the founder of Mary’s Meals and Sue Lawrence the well kent Scottish food writer who has just produced The Scottish Soup Bible complete the bill of fare.

Rosneath Primary School celebrates its 50th anniversary and funding is being provided to trace its history

Cove Park has received a Heritage Lottery Fund Sharing Heritage grant to help fund an exciting project celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Rosneath Primary School. Led by Cove Park artist Linda Florence, the Artist’s Residency project has been given £3,900 to work with the school to build a unique picture of the its life in the community of Rosneath, through the eyes of its staff and pupils, over the last 50 years. Cove Park is an international centre based in Scotland for the arts and creative industries. Founded in 1999 by Eileen and Peter Jacobs, Cove

Park's annual programme of residencies supports national and international artists, working in all art forms. Central to its aims is their remit to engage a wide public with resident artists and their work so as to broaden and encourage cultural aspirations. Dawn Youll, Craft Programme Producer, said: “ This school project will encourage the learning and sharing of heritage

through creative practice. It will be led by artist and previous Cove Park resident Linda Florence who will deliver a series of workshops within the school to encourage and develop the pupils' skills as investigators and to introduce ways for them to translate their findings into artworks. “There will be opportunities for members of the community to be involved by sharing stories and taking part in creative workshops. Information about such workshops will be announced on the Cove Park website www. covepark.org and through the school.” Lucy Casot, Head of HLF Scotland, said: “A Heritage Project celebrating the 50th Anniversary of Rosneath Primary School in Argyll & Bute is a fine example of HLF’s Sharing Heritage programme that, thanks to National Lottery players, makes it possible for local people to choose what is important to them, what they want to save, and how they want to spread the word throughout their community.”

One of the highlights of that distant sunny day that was the Helensburgh Summer Festival was the performance of the HMS Neptune Volunteer Band. Locals unfamiliar with this lively outfit might be interested to know that it’s not only open to military personnel or those who work at HM Naval Base Clyde, but it’s truly a community band. In fact last year they put out an appeal for musicians to come and join the 40-odd members of the volunteer band who range in age

The Creggans The traditional family friendly pub situated on the banks of the River Clyde has recently undergone a fresh refurbishment. The pub has recently enjoyed a makeover with new flooring and repainting throughout, as well as newly fitted toilets and brand new TVs being installed. Along with the recent upgrades we will continue to have live acts on most Saturday nights (and the occasional Sunday afternoon), from solo acts to five-piece rock bands, discos and karaoke - check out the website for what’s on. At the bar we serve many popular drinks as well as an extensive range of malt whiskies, premium gins,

draught beers, real ales and fine wines served by the glass or full bottle. We also now offer Azzurro coffee and Pizza and Nachos are available 7 days a week. Our bar has Sky Sports and BT Sports, as well as a pool table, jukebox and fruit machine, not to mention the cosy open log fire, all ensuring a truly enjoyable day or evening at The Creggans. from 15 to 80. Always in popular demand, the musicians play at dozens of events each year. A recent successful gig was on board the Maid of the Loch and for one particular band member the concert had special significance. Regular visitors to the Maid might have recognised Drum Major James Dalgleish,

Interestingly, this is the only Royal Navy Volunteer Band in Scotland and North of London. It consists of around 15% Royal Naval and 85% civilian personnel, which are made up of retired service personnel, MoD Civil Service, Babcock employees and their families and friends. Over the last year the band has played at a variety of engagements within the naval base and at local charity and ceremonial events and it is well worth looking out for their gigs in the run up to Christmas. They are currently the direction of Bd Sgt Annabelinda “AJ” Hardy who is supported by Volunteer Band Offi cer, Lt Cdr Julian Rogers RN and Drum Major Dalgleish.

MeMorial ready For arMistice day Work at the war memorial at Hermitage Park goes on with the aim of having all the major works, except the memorial garden completed in time for Remembrance Sunday. The restoration of the War Memorial and Memorial Garden is progressing well and scaffolding is up on the memorial for the repair and conservation works there. This includes recutting the badly weathered lettering so all the names will again be crisp and clear. Work on construction of the new pavilion will begin this month. Stewart and Shields have been awarded the contract to build the new pavilion after a rigorous tendering process.

What’s holding you back in life? HYPNOSIS CAN HELP WITH:

• Anxiety • Stress • Confidence • Weight Issues • Fears and phobias

The pavilion designed by Gareth Hoskins Architects, will include a café, community room, toilets and the park manager's office. It will also feature a loggia and terrace

along the south side. Elsewhere, the Hermit’s Well has been cleaned out and the source of the spring has been found – 2m deep behind the well where the 1860 Ordnance Survey First Edition map marked a well. New drainage features have been installed and a decorative gate will be added in due course. Meanwhile progress on the major restoration project has revealed the footprint of Hermitage House which is now being laid out in stone. In addition works to install the time line path through the mill ruins is well underway. New traffic lights at the Montrose Street and Sinclair Street junction are being paid

for by part of the Sustrans grant won by the park as they will make it safer and easier to cross the road to get to the park. The Friends of Hermitage Park remind us that their Action Days continue as normal, 2-4pm on the third Thursday of the month, October 19 and November 16. They say: “Thank you to our stalwart supporters and – new helpers always welcome.”

Two local organisations recently presented Helensburgh RNLI Lifeboat with Audio Visual equipment worth over £500 to help with training. Helensburgh RNLI Lifeboat station takes delivery of a new Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat in this month and is currently trying to raise £20,000 towards the training costs for the new boat. As much of the training is by digital delivery the A/V equipment is essential. Members of the Clyde Cruising Club and Helensburgh Class Royal Scottish Country Dancing Society raised the money through various events. Amongst those present at the presentation were Clive Reeves, Commodore of the Clyde Cruising Club, past Commodore Dr Patrick Truss; Roy Bain & Helen Bain and Allan and Marie Carrie

of Helensburgh Royal Scottish Country Dancing Society together with Donald McLaren and Colin Gardner of the RNLI. Keith Shipman Volunteer Press Officer Helensburgh RNLI Lifeboat reminds us: ”The Helensburgh Lifeboat maintains a 365 day, 24 hour readiness, and there must always be crew members available to help those in peril at sea. All Lifeboat crew members are trained to an extremely high standard, and training at Helensburgh has always been taken seriously, to ensure that every member of the Helensburgh Lifeboat crew is fully prepared for responding to any emergency at sea.”

rogue trader warning to residents Local residents are being warned that rogue traders are cold calling at homes offering work on driveways. Argyll and Bute Council’s Trading Standards team has reports of tradesmen in the area offering to lay or repair tarmac driveways and do similar work. The advice is: You could end up badly out of pocket. Policy Lead for Planning and Regulatory Services, Councillor David Kinniburgh, said:

Head and neck cancer is on the increase. It is half as common as lung cancer, but twice that of cervical cancer. It refers to tumours in the head or neck region, except the eyes, brain, ears or gullet. There are more than 30 areas within the head and neck where it can start. There were more than 150,000 new patients diagnosed in Europe in 2012, which is the equivalent to the Olympic stadium in London being filled with people almost twice over.

It is most common in people over 40, and affects men more than women. Smoking increases the risk by 15 times and drinking more than 3 units of alcohol daily also significantly increases the risk. Recently it has been found that exposure to human papilloma virus increases risk in younger people. If people have just one of these symptoms for three weeks then they they should see their GP: Mouth ulcers, throat pain, swallowing problems, neck lump, persistent bleeding from one side of the nose or hoarseness.

Despite this, people often wait too long to see the doctor, limiting the benefit of treatments. However patients diagnosed early have an 80-90% survival rate.

Check the website “makesensecampaign.eu for more information and make an appointment with your GP if you have concerns!

SUPPORT Parent and child workshop launch GROUPS Local News – OCTOBER 2017

Helensburgh woman Lorna Davies has started a new venture of life coaching for children within the local area and also parent and child workshops.

actually about enabling your child to develop a mindset and to become the leader in their own lives so that they can become, confident, successful, resilient and in charge of their own lives.” Examples of topics covered are work on are developing selfesteem, strong self-confidence, achieving goals, managing mistakes, handling stress, anxiety, building resilience, dealing with peer pressure.

Lorna told the CA: “ I qualified as an Occupational Therapist and have worked for the NHS specialising in working with children and their families.

Says Lorna: “ My approach is to use a combination of stories, games, short meditations and activities. We are helped along our journey by Wyatt the Wise Wizard, who appears in our stories.

“ I always love learning to find new ways to help and empower children so a few years ago I decided to expand and complement my skills by gaining additional qualifications in Counselling and Life Coaching, mindset coaching for children and meditation for children. “When we are older we can think back to our younger self and often say, ‘If I knew then what I do now things would be different.’ What if we could teach our children all those things that makes you a wiser version of yourself? “

To this end, Lorna has introduced the Wisdom Coach programme to Scotland. She adds: “The programme is not your typical ‘train your kids to behave.’ It’s

“He introduces the skill we are about to work on and illustrates how the skill applies to real-life situations that your child might face at school, with friends or at home. We then complete activities and games to experience and practice the skill which integrates into everyday life. “ https://pursuitofwisdomcoaching. com/

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: ORGAN DONATION authorisation for the hospital to be able to use your organs. Hospitals have a member of staff called a transplant co-ordinator and if there are no clear wishes expressed about organ donation then that individual will be required to speak to the deceased’s family as soon as practicably possible.

There are a number of ways a person can express their wishes in relation to organ donation following death. There is an NHS Organ Donor Register, which can be accessed online, and some people carry an organ donation card making their views explicitly clear. Simply telling someone what you would want to happen to your body following death is also sufficient.

It is the nearest relative to the deceased who will be asked to make a decision about organ donation and their instructions should be based on what they think their relatives views were.

The law surrounding organ donation has been developed in such a way so as to ensure a person’s wishes are carried out.

If you have a clear view, take the time to discuss it with family or put your name on the donor register.

Therefore, a clear expression of your wishes to be an organ donor is taken as

The best big-band music returns to Helensburgh on Saturday 7 October as Byres Road Big Band once more plays the Victoria Halls. ‘We are very pleased to be coming back to Helensburgh’ says Paul Gardner, chair of the band’s organising committee. ‘We played here in January and it was a good night with a great audience’. The band plays a wide range of music, from the earliest days of the swing era to contemporary arrangements, with an emphasis on charts from the Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands. Under Musical Director Paul Towndrow, the band works hard on the precision playing necessary to recreate the classic big-band sound. ‘We don’t want to be just a group

of people playing big-band music’ says Paul Gardner. ‘We aim to sound like a single unit.’ Byres Road Big Band was set up in the west end of Glasgow in 2007, as a community organisation to give amateur musicians the opportunity to practice and perform jazz in a large-ensemble format. ‘We knew there were a lot of people who had played at school and college, but had no opportunity to play once they left formal education’ says Paul. All the band members are amateur musicians and the organisation is entirely self-financing.

The Savoy Musical Theatre Group is staging “Sister Act”. The show will run from November 1st - 4th in the Victoria Halls, Helensburgh. A host of talented performers from Helensburgh, Dumbarton and the surrounding areas will be taking part in this rousing comedy show about the night club diva who has to take refuge in a convent whilst on a witness protection program having seen a murder. Full of fabulous songs this is a great night out. Tickets available from First Class on West Princes St, Helensburgh; through the ticket Secretary on 675765, or on the door prior to performances. Prices £8 - £12. Doors open at 7pm. (2pm for matinee).

Like them it has become a major draw for visitors, and a must for a selfie. In just 15 months members of the public have contributed around £4,000 towards the upkeep of Tom Weir’s Rest and its associated mountain garden, which means the Friends of Loch Lomond are effectively being given the wherewithal to keep everything in perfect condition.

Tom Weir’s enduring reputation as Scotland’s most famous outdoors man helping to bring people from all over the world to Lomondside.

The funds will also help cost the mundane but necessary bill for insuring the site, and maintenance during the harsh winter months.

What began as a stronglysupported grass roots fundraising campaign has developed into one of Scotland’s must-see sites for thousands of people at home and abroad – and in much less than three years.

The amount raised testifies both to the generosity of visitors and to their numbers, with Fully trained & insured Local company, friendly staff Over 15 years experience

top teaM restored town garden the park back into use using fi nancial support of £5,000 from the Scottish Government's Stalled Spaces fund.

Volunteers re-open James Street Park after a fantastic resoration effort

James Street Garden has reopened thanks to well organised and coordinated teamwork between public and private organisations and some great volunteers. Efforts to breathe new life into the much-loved public space in the centre of Helensburgh were praised by the chair of the town's community council. Norman Muir said the community-led regeneration of the James Street public park was a prime example of local residents taking the lead in improving Helensburgh's public spaces. The James Street park was originally gifted to the town by

Plans for the park's future were drawn up by local garden designer Rachel Bailey and put out for public consultation. Her brief was to create a community wildlife garden with natural play space for young children and plenty of seating areas. The community group wanted the park to become a beautiful, tranquil place for relaxation, whilst being low maintenance.

However, in the face of cuts to its amenity services budget, Argyll and Bute Council expressed a desire last year for the park’s ongoing upkeep to be handed on to a community-led group.

Local organisations including Night and Day, Helensburgh Rugby Club,The Paint Shed, Eastside Motors and Mather Hire all helped. Cardross firm Creative Ironworks made, supplied and installed new gates for the park at no cost to the association – fabricating the steelwork at the same workshop where the park's previous gates were manufactured. Much of the clearance was done by Community Payback workers.

A group of local residents joined forces with Helensburgh Community Council to bring

GOOD

COMPANY... At The Kitchen Depot, we have always prided ourselves in our family values, on always being prepared to do whatever it takes to ensure that our customers are treated exactly as we would like to be treated ourselves - with courtesy, consideration and professionalism.

But lest we ever become complacent, we actively encourage ongoing feedback - here's what Mr Lee Sanderson has to say:

"The most incredible thing about The Kitchen Depot has been your sky-high levels of customer service. Too often a company will promote customer service as a core value, only to reveal a hollow promise when they don't live up to it." Mr Sanderson continues: "My favourite retailer is John Lewis because I know that they will do whatever they can to put something right if it goes wrong. The Kitchen Depot has performed to the same high standard."

"To favourably compare a small family business to Britain's most respected retailer is not something that I do lightly but you are well worthy of the comparison." Well, thanks for that, Mr Sanderson - please excuse us while we blush with pride. When it comes to looking after our customers, The Kitchen Depot is never knowingly undersold.
