Local News - FEBRUARY 2016

Burgh House sales take off create around 140 jobs during construction, which is expected to be over four years. Consent was granted in 2008 for 166 homes on the site. Local councillors have welcomed the potential investment which will give a much needed lift to the local population - and boost the local economy. Cllr Vivien Dance said :” We are crying out for houses in the town.”

The Helensburgh property market was boosted by increased interest from buyers at the year end. As for sale signs were replaced with under offer notices one agent commented that there had been a flurry of activity in the local market. One example was a home that had been on sale for 18 months receiving an offer in excess of owners’ expectations. Helensburgh is perceived as being good value with more house for your money than areas closer to the city such as Bearsden and Mobile Hairstylist

Milngavie, but still offering a relatively easy commute. The property website Zoopla recorded 77 local sales in the last quarter. Prices are finally creeping up after years in the doldrums with detached homes increasing 3.5% over the year. Meanwhile plans for 95 houses on the former Hermitage Academy site in Helensburgh have been submitted which should bring a welcome Would you like yourr o oven ven cleaned until it gleams?

population boost. The proposal, which would see a mix of two, three and four bed homes built on the site if approved, was submitted by Taylor Wimpey West Scotland Ltd, who say it would represent "significant investment" in the local area, creating new jobs and contributing to the wider economy.

"The proposal outlines our plan to deliver two, three and four bedroom homes in a range of styles to appeal to a wide range of potential buyers, and it represents a significant investment in the local area that will see us create new jobs as well as contribute to the wider local economy.

The developer said the homes would be a range of styles and would appeal to a wide range of potential buyers. It is estimated that the project will

Behind that simple statement lies an astonishing fundraising effort which has achieved a major new facility for the town. One that will serve it to the end of the century and beyond. The parish extends a warm welcome to everyone to the opening ceremony and tours of the building on Saturday February 6th. After a short service of Thanksgiving at noon the ribbon will be cut followed by an afternoon of music, singing and

guided tours. There will also be complimentary refreshments and an exhibition showcasing a wide variety of parish activities. The £1.8 million building blends seamlessly with the church providing a main hall the size of a badminton court, a smaller one cleverly connected to the church as well as various offices, and meeting rooms which are all equipped with the latest video and IT links plus there is a full professional kitchen.

million. It came from existing funds, a request to members to dig in pockets, plus funding from various UK charities that have funds available for the right kind of project. Then there was a final push which fittingly included enacting the parable of the talents. 100 people were given £10 seed money many returned £100 and more from an array of ideas and activities from pyramid lunches to car washes and garden parties. Frank Sinatra and Rod Stewart have more in common than their recordings of the American Songbook. Sinatra was an enthusiastic railway modeller and Rod Stewart counts his cover story on the Railway Model Craftsman magazine as his top accolade. Here in Helensburgh there is a group who could give them a run for their money. In the late summer of 1989 a group of people met to see if a Model Railway Club could be formed in the town under the guidance of the late Archie Allan and Gilbert Hutcheson. The club eventually joined the

Association of Model Railway Societies of Scotland. This gained it entry in the Model Rail Show Circuit in Scotland and members have taken their layouts all around the country delighting fellow enthusiasts.

Millig Yard is their latest layout. In OO gauge it is their first fully DCC layout which along with the operation of the locos, also includes operating the points. The layout is a fictitious location and incorporates a maintenance shed for a single diesel loco with fueling point and sidings to stable locos.

Readers may recollect their layout Craigendorran Pier being on display in the library.

Sheildinch, which has been toured, most recently to the Falkirk exhibition is a N gauge layout based in the Glasgow area. Running modern passenger and freight trains, the layout comprises of Shieldinch station, loco maintenance shed and sidings for stabling stock.

The pier was scratch built by club members. The layout is based around the early 20th century and comprises the main station with a line branching off along the pier.

There are some wonderful photos and further information on the club’s website and Facebook page. Contact enquiries@ helensburghdmrc.co.uk

Local vets say most responsible owners already chip their dogs. But for those who don’t or are worried about the cost, The Dogs Trust charity will offer the service free, which they say will be a "huge help" in reducing the number of lost and abandoned dogs in Scotland. Scottish Rural Affairs secretary Richard Lochhead said: "Scotland is a nation of animal lovers and so we must do all we can to safeguard dog welfare and

promote responsible ownership.” He said that he understood two-thirds of dogs in Scotland had already been microchipped voluntarily, and claimed that in 2014, over 10,000 dogs in the UK were reunited with their owners as a result of a microchip. "This is an impressive figure, but it could be improved on dramatically by ensuring that all dogs are microchipped and, equally important, that their details are kept up-to-date,"

Dogs Trust campaigns director Elvira Meucci said: "We have long been a leading voice in the campaign for compulsory microchipping and are delighted to see the Scottish government legislate for this important component of dog welfare and responsible ownership. "As the UK's largest dog welfare charity, reducing the nation's stray dog population is at the very heart of Dogs Trust's ethos, which is why we have committed to ensuring no dog owners will lack the financial ability to microchip their dog." The Trust says that the government now had time to work out the details of implementing the measure and ensure that it created "a reliable and trusted system that works effectively for both dog owners and vets".

Extra plate IS JUST great age of 80 so the enterprise hopes to connect people who might be isolated in their community and at the same time save money for local councils. It now has more than 4,000 volunteer cooks nationwide.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: A new project hopes to bring extra food portions to those unable to cook for themselves

A recent feature on BBC Breakfast highlighted a great idea which could be taken up here. Casserole Club is a social enterprise that connects those who love to cook with those that can’t cook with the aim of tackling loneliness and malnutrition. It could make a great project for a local organisation. Casserole Club helps people share extra portions of home-cooked food with others in their area who might not be able to cook for themselves.

Members of the club serve up meals to their neighbours while strengthening local neighbourhood relationships. The venture is organised through a website that allows neighbours to sign up as cooks and search for diners in their area. The business was set up by FutureGov, a company that aims to improve public services through digital products. 80 per cent of diners are over the

Futuregov say: “The Casserole project is now growing. We're looking to grow further and faster. As a result we've been working hard to partner with local organisations in our rollout areas that can help us to find and sign up diners. “ We know from research, and from the hundreds of emails that we've had from organisations like councils and housing associations, that there are thousands who could benefit from the project across the UK. Town’s new treeS vandalised Late News FRIDAY 5TH NCT Nearly New Sale REGISTRATION OPEN Victoria Halls 9am, find top quality used baby/ children's clothes, toys and equipment. Facebook/NCTLomond, lomond@nct.org.uk, 07896 741214.

Almost all the newly planted trees in Havelock Street have been vandalised. There’s an appeal for help. Anne Urquhart tells us: “The Tree Trust volunteers who worked hard to raise funds for the plantings are absolutely gutted about this latest attack on our Helensburgh street trees. The Police are now involved and we hope everyone will assist by offering any information they can provide.

The Tree Conservation Trust tells us that our town's street trees provide great inspiration for talented artists.

She exhibits at leading galleries throughout the United Kingdom and has had her work accepted by prestigious competitions, including the annual Singer and Friedlander Sunday Times Watercolour Competition, The Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Art, The Federation of British Artists' Annual Exhibition, The British Society of Painters in Watercolour, The Society of Botanical Artists and The British Society of Women Artists among many others.

Argyle Street, Helensburgh, is a Watercolour and Pen by Sophia Perina-Miller, a Russian born artist who moved to Scotland in 2000.

Digital prints of “Argyll Street“ can be obtained from the artist's web site www.sofiaperinamiller.com

“If you hear anyone boasting about how they trashed most of the trees then please report what you can to the Police on 101.“ These trees are the same type as have already been planted in Glasgow Street (see photo) so they would have brought some lovely Spring blossom and Autumn colour to the street.

Seeking seafront What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn volunteers This month: FUELLING UP...

The Helensburgh Seafront Development committee have announced the next stage in their plan to securing a brighter future for Helensburgh’s Seafront. A spokesman tells us: “Our recent registration as a Scottish Charity (SCIO) allows for us to grow our numbers and extend an invitation for new talented and enthusiastic members.” “Are you over 16 and able to commit your time and enthusiasm to help us succeed? Are you willing to help us fundraise, are you an engineer, architect,

lawyer or accountant, or do you just simply have the drive and determination we are looking for? “If you are interested in joining us in transforming Helensburgh’s Seafront then please get in touch.” The plan, aside from pier repairs, envisages adding a partially covered walkway with historical facts and information about the town. There will be areas for seating and fishing, and a paddling pool included in the creation of the West Bay Lagoon which will also serve as a place to offer all types of activities, including rowing boats, pedalos, kayaks and much more. Contact the HSDP Committee contact@helensburghseafront.org

We are what we eat ... and drink! Last month the first new guidance in 20 years was issued, stating that no amount of alcohol is safe. The maximum intake for men has been reduced to 14 units per week. To put this into perspective this is equivalent to 8 bottles of Becks or 7 glasses of wine. That is per week - not per night! The main reason for the new advice was increased risks of certain cancers. However alcohol is linked to other medical problems such as heart disease, obesity, and mood problems and giving people more information

Golf membership your way

about its impact is hoped to counter the “alcohol culture” in Scotland. Moves are afoot to put a “sugar tax” on unhealthy foods, and adding vitamins to more foods. Recognising the impact of what we eat and drink on our health is obvious but can sometimes be neglected in the busy lives that we lead. Freshly prepared food with a balance of fresh meat or fish with vegetables and fruit is recognised as the first step in eating well and avoiding illness. We wouldn’t put the wrong petrol or oil in our cars so why not give our bodies the fuel they need!

A new service providing support for people affected by cancer has opened in Helensburgh Library. The Macmillan Cancer Information & Support Service has developed in partnership with Macmillan Cancer Support, Argyll and Bute Council, NHS Highland, and Argyll and Bute Third Sector Forum to provide much needed support for people with cancer, their families and carers in the area. The service is run by a group of

specially trained volunteers who can provide emotional support, guidance with information materials on various aspects of cancer and its treatment, or simply a listening ear over a friendly cup of tea. As well as specialist cancer information and emotional support, the service can signpost people on to other specialist

Elspeth Atkinson, Director of Macmillan, comments: “A cancer diagnosis brings with it all kinds of questions and uncertainty for patients, their families and friends. Being able to access information and emotional support at this stressful time is vital and we know from the success of similar services in Libraries that people appreciate local easily accessible services. “It is thanks to the hard work and dedication of our supporters in Argyll and Bute who raise so much money for us that we are able to establish such a vital service. Macmillan believes that no one should face cancer alone and the continued support from people locally will help us to ensure that no one does”. To find out more about the project, or if you are interested in volunteering, contact Deirdre or Chris on 01586 555932 or macmillan@argyll-bute.gov.uk.

FEBRUARY 2016 - Valentine Feature

Valentines day really is That day is fast approaching where you run to your front door on hearing the post drop. And it seems your red letter day may be good for the heart in more ways than one. Valentine gifts of chocolate, the occasional glass of wine, and expressions of love could not only make your heart go pitter-patter in romantic fashion, they could also lead to better heart health. Experts do not always agree but most concede that a lot of love and little of the others will probably do more good than harm. There's no doubt chocolate can contribute to weight gain and tooth decay, but now researchers are finding it can do good things for the body as well. "It seems a component in cocoa, flavonoids, can be heart

healthful," says Susan Moores, RD, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association (ADA). She says flavonoids are antioxidants, known to protect against free radicals in the body. This antioxidant effect is apparently greater in dark chocolate, because it has more cocoa beans, a natural source of flavonoids. Wining and dining has long been a Valentine's Day tradition for sweethearts and among other studies the Mayo Clinic did say: e t rv ea se s ve Re ur lo yo of

Valentine Feature - FEBRUARY

good for your health “Red wine, in moderation, has long been thought of as heart healthy. The alcohol and certain substances in red wine called antioxidants may help prevent heart disease by increasing levels of "good" cholesterol and protecting against artery damage.” Just quoting, but remember all the health professionals warn against excessive drinking. How about love improving heart health? "The evidence is very strong that good relationships have health benefits," says Blair Justice, PhD, professor emeritus of psychology at the University of Texas School of Public Health. According to Justice, various

investigators have looked into different types of relationships, marriage, family, and friendship, and have shown that love’s protective effect against heart disease has been tested in several settings. One theory explaining love's effect on physical health involves human nature. "It's instinctual to have this need for touching and talking," says Justice. He says the personal contact turns on a part of the nervous system, which has a calming effect, and allows for a smaller amount of stress chemicals in the body. Well we always knew it was nice, now we know it is health giving too. So let’s enjoy the nonsense that is 14 February, whether we are in a romantic relationship or not, by eating a little chocolate, smelling the roses, sipping a glass of wine and remembering whatever it is that makes us smile can’t be all bad.

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: COHABITATION RIGHTS... It is often a misconception of cohabiting couples that they are protected by the rules of common law marriage. Unfortunately, there is no such thing in Scotland, no matter how long you have lived together. It is, however, possible for individuals to make a financial claim following the end of a cohabiting relationship, caused either by separation or death. The Family Law (Scotland) Act 2006 makes certain provisions for this under S.28 and S.29. If you are able to show that you have suffered an economic disadvantage and that this has been in the interests of your partner or children, including children accepted as being part of the family, then you may be entitled to seek a capital sum payment. The court will consider whether

your partner has gained any economic advantage as a result of contributions made by you. Contributions can be non-financial, such as bringing up children, allowing your partner to progress their own business or career. The court may also take into consideration the future economic burden of caring for any children. A claim of this type must be made within one year and a day after the date of separation. There is also provision for circumstances where a partner dies without leaving a will. However, the time limit for a claim of this type is only six months from the date of death. Although of some assistance, this legislation does not put cohabitants on an equal footing with married couples and does not allow any claim for aliment.

Bid to build community spirit A newsletter has been launched in a bid to build more community spirit in Kirkmichael. The Kirkmichael Community Development Group (KCDG) would like to organise more events, projects and activities in Kirkmichael, but they say they need residents to tell them what they want to happen.

Readers are reminded that when purchasing items or services advertised in the Publication that the Publisher cannot be held in any way responsible for the quality or correctness of the items or services included in the Advertisement.

The newsletter is the way the KCDG hope to initially connect with residents. It has been produced with the backing of The Council, Police Scotland, Housing Associations and The Community Advertiser which is also distributing it. Group Chairman Stephen Coates says : “The Group is small at the moment but we hope after the newsletter to have a lot more people come along to meetings. “Our group aims to get the community working together in activities of all kinds such as sport, youth work, work clubs, taking kids and mams and dads on outings to places where they would never go. “So we hope at our next meeting we will see some signs that we

are getting somewhere. The date for the next meeting is Thursday 18th February at 7pm at the Community Centre in Kirkmichael.” KCDG say in their editorial: “For a while we had no community organisation in Kirkmichael, so, there seemed to be a gap to fill, especially with good facilities like the all-weather pitch lying unused.

Report praises Lomond School Education Scotland says that Lomond School is ‘vibrant, welcoming and well-resourced’ After a recent three-day visit to Lomond School, HM Inspectors of Education found consistently high-quality learning experiences, a wide range of learning pathways, the best SQA attainment results for five years and outstanding approaches to outdoor learning. Inspectors said: “A strong culture of self-evaluation and continuous improvement has resulted in joined up thinking and a shared purpose across the nursery, junior and senior stages and the inspectorate team is confident that under the astute, inspiring leadership of Principal Johanna Urquhart Lomond school will go from strength to strength.” Inspectors commented on the positive impact of new posts such as Head of Adventure and Service, Head of E-Learning and Digital Strategy and Head of Careers and Future Destinations which ensure that all young people readily take responsibility for their learning and develop a ‘wide range of skills and attributes to prepare them for life, learning and the

world of work.’ Mrs Urquhart commented:

The inspection was a hugely positive experience for our school and I am delighted with the feedback... An important feature of this visit was for Education Scotland to be confident that the school has the capacity to self-evaluate and continue to improve autonomously. We were thrilled with the glowing feedback, and also with the fact that the team agreed with all of our plans for the future direction of our school.” Lomond School currently has approximately 400 day and boarding pupils aged from 3-18 years old, and provides an all

Chairman of the Board of Governors, Alastair Hope said: “It was particularly gratifying to gain such positive feedback about the leadership team of the school and to hear that the children and young people are justifiably proud of their school.”
