Heather adds special Christmas sparkle

said: “Come along and enjoy this free event in the town, a time for everyone to join in as a community. We are delighted with the great support from local groups, local businesses and council staff who work so hard and donate so generously of their time, lorries and equipment to make this event possible.“

The winner of the Community Advertiser sponsored Christmas Lights competition is eightyear old Heather Marton. Heather came to the office to receive her special elf dress ready for the big night on Friday 20th November when she will switch on the town’s lights.

at Christmas time and and thinks will look just right hanging in Colquhoun Square and will bring a smile to people when they look up at it.

Heather was delighted when told her drawing had been selected from many entries this year. She told us that she drew something that she thinks is always around

On the big night of the switch on, Heather will ride with Santa in his big sleigh with lots of snowmen and lead the parade of nine sparkling sleighs from the

Victoria Hall at 6pm and come down Sinclair Street, along Clyde Street to William Street and then back along West Princes Street to the square. In the square there will be entertainment on stage as everyone waits for the parade and then Santa and Heather will press the magic button to light up first her special feature and then the whole of the town’s Christmas Lights. On behalf of the Friends of the Victoria Hall, Vivien Dance

This year Santa and his sleighs will pass every shop in the town centre and give everyone a chance to enjoy the efforts of all those involved. The teams behind each sleigh this year are Riding for the Disabled, Ardlui Respite, Helensburgh and Lomond Young Carers, Autism/Aspergers Society, Margaret Rose School of Dance supported by Speedy Hire, M&T Builders Merchants and DCF Joiners and competition sponsors, the Community Advertiser team. The sleigh volunteers who stage this show say:” We would love everyone to wear a Santa or an elf hat to show their support, full Christmas fancy dress even better, let’s show what Helensburgh is made of and celebrate our community success in real style. Ho, Ho, Ho.”

TV spot for Arusha’s antiques

LOCAL ANTIQUES: The Antiques Road Trip stopped in at Kilcreggan Antiques

An antiques shop in Kilcreggan is to feature in the popular TV series Antiques Road Trip. The show, which pits two antiques experts against each other to bag a bargain and raise the most money at auction is made by STV for the BBC and has been attracting a big audience. Various experts travel the length and breadth of Britain in vintage cars to buy objects for auction. On the Rosneath Peninsula the team filmed at Kilcreggan Antiques. The programme, due for transmission early next year

sees an immaculate Morris Minor parked outside while expert Paul Laidlaw buys items inside. Arusha Irvine, who opened Kilcreggan Antiques in April last year, was contacted by the show’s producers asking if they could visit. “Paul was lovely,” she said.“We love Antiques Road Trip, we’ve watched it for a long time. Paul has always been my favourite and I was very happy when we found

out he was coming. “There was a lot of banter between me and Paul – it was very good fun. I did have some butterflies but they made me feel very relaxed.” Paul, who had never visited the area before, said: “We had an absolutely joyous ride in – as good a run to work as I’ll experience.” He described the Kilcreggan business as ‘a little Aladdin’s Cave’, adding: “It was great, good diversity, a good range and the things that I’ve bought show that diversity again, from late 18th century England to 19th century darkest Africa, it’s a good contrast.” Paul’s rival presenter Catherine Southon filmed a segment at the Hill House in Helensburgh for a special feature for the programme. Lorna Hepburn, manager of the Hill House, said the show would be a great way of bringing more visitors to the Hill House and boosting its profile. The road trip had already taken them to Dunfermline and Stirling, and was to continue in Glasgow’s West End.

The boys’ mother, Donna Hicks, posted on FaceBook what the boys were planning and was completely amazed by the support from friends offering to sponsor the children and some also wanting to take part. Thanks to the children who all took part in the event and their fundraising

Donna said 'I couldn't be prouder of my boys and all the other children and their parents who took part and helped us fundraise. It was a wonderful day. We would like to thank all those who have sponsored the children and all those who helped on the day. In particular we would like to thank Waitrose for supplying snacks and drinks for the cyclists at the halfway point and the Logie Baird pub for providing drinks and a celebration buffet at the end of the event'. Cancer Research UK recently launched Grand Challenges the biggest and most ambitious cancer grants in the world - which aim to overcome the greatest barriers standing in the way of beating cancer. The £100 million investment challenges the best scientists around the world to come up with answers to crucial questions about how to save more lives from cancer.

This figure is expected to increase due to the recent announcement by the UK Chancellor of an extra £500 million of funding for HMNB Clyde.

Armed Forces families moving to this area are to receive a welcome booklet. It comes from Argyll and Bute Council’s education service and will provide vital information about schools and early learning and child care provision in the area. The booklet was collated by Service Pupil Advisor, Davina Blair, who works with children and parents from armed forces families. Davina’s post and the welcome book have both been funded by the MOD Education Fund and will provide families with critical advice on the transition to the Scottish education system,

It also provides a guide on how parents can enrol their child, even when they are awaiting allocation of service family accommodation. The booklet has been written with extensive consultation from existing parents from Armed Forces families in the area who have moved to Scotland from England or abroad. It will be widely publicised Hard copies will also be distributed. Electronic copies will

The Council’s Armed Forces Champion, Councillor Maurice Corry said: “This information will be extremely valuable for service families moving to the area “HMNB is to become the single integrated operating base for submarines which will result in personnel rising to 8,200 by 2020. This will have a massive effect on the number of submariner families moving to the area from Plymouth. Royal Marines currently stationed in Plymouth, Taunton, Poole and Arbroath could also be asked to serve at HMNB Clyde. “This welcome booklet is a great initiative by the Council and those involved in establishing it are to be congratulated.”

NOVEMBER 2015 - What's Up Doc

Square museum up for award Helensburgh’s outdoor museum has been shortlisted for an international award. The FX Interior Design Awards will see the museum in Colquhoun Square compete with entrants such as the Domunder archaeological experience under the Domplein Square in Utrecht and the Lotus Square Art Centre in Zhuhai, China, in the museum or exhibition space category. The award ceremony, organised by FX magazine, will be held in the Grosvenor House Hotel in London on November 25. As part of Argyll and Bute Council’s £7m CHORD project, the outdoor museum, developed and delivered by art organisation WAVEparticle, in partnership with architects Austin-Smith Lord, displays a collection of treasured objects brought forward by local residents and organisations,

Kate Ive and Chris ColemanSmith. WAVEparticle lead artist, Peter McCaughey, said: “We are delighted. ’We imagined Scotland’s first outdoor museum as a place where local treasures could be permanently on display alongside objects of national significance and newly commissioned artworks, reflecting both the big history of the town and the smaller stories that make up our world.” It is hoped that in the future local groups will be able to add to the collection.

It includes a series of historic artefacts encapsulated in acrylic and three specially commissioned artworks by Lesley Carruthers,

Book Fest Positively Criminal The second Cove and Kilcreggan Book Festival features some of Scotland’s crime royalty. That is to say of course the people who write about dark deeds. Laidlaw creator Willie McIlvanney is the inaugural guest at 11.30 on Saturday morning (Nov 28th) and the cafe bar will be open afterwards, as will a signing session upstairs in the library. In the afternoon there is more crime royalty with Val McDermid at 2pm and Denise Mina at 3.30. Again both will be on hand after their events to sign copies of their books and have a chat with fans. The evening sees The Great Debate. “Scotland The What” featuring Sunday Herald columnist Iain McWhirter, a prominent supporter of the Yes campaign during last year’s Referendum discussing the nation’s future with Alan Cochrane, the Scottish editor of The Telegraph who was firmly in the No camp. Sunday November 29 features two of Scotland’s most popular novelists and poets. At 11.30 AL Kennedy will be in conversation with James Robertson, and

after a cafe bar lunch, the final guest is the always engaging Jackie Kay. AL Kennedy is a Scottish writer of novels, short stories and non-fiction, as well as a stand up comedian and has written books such as Everything You Need and Indelible Acts while Jackie Kay is a Scottish poet and novelist, who has published books such as The Adoption Papers – a partially autobiographical book of poetry. Tickets can be booked online at coveburghhall.uk or in person at Kilcreggan Post Office or on the door. The Book Festival held in Cove Burgh Hall is a partner of Book Week Scotland. Last year was very successful. Over £1000 worth of books were sold at the Festival which featured Janice Galloway, Sally Magnusson, Kirsty Wark and James Robertson.

Several studies have shown that when you buy from an independent, locally owned business, rather than a nationally owned business, significantly more of your money is used to make purchases from other local businesses, service providers and farms. Every pound that leaves our area is largely lost to our community, in fact some research suggests that every single pound you spend gets recycled so well by local communities that it ends up being worth ÂŁ3 to the wider community.

Shopping Feature - NOVEMBER 2015

Boosts Economy community by strengthening the local economy with money spent being retained in the community. The Chambers of Commerce point out that buying items made closer to home also cuts down on fossil

fuel use, and reduces the carbon impact on our environment. Experiences at local establishments are unique, expressing the local flavour of the area. Local business owners are more likely to get involved and to contribute to community efforts. Most job growth too comes from local independent businesses. We can all contribute to a vibrant local economy. Eat at locally owned restaurants, buy gifts from locally owned stores and shops, order catering from locally owned restaurants.

florists and nurseries, plan your office party at locally owned meeting places or restaurants. Shop at neighborhood and artisan events, support non-profit and charity shops, only shop online if it's with locally owned independent businesses, invite your friends to shop local with you. By choosing to spend money this holiday season at local, independent businesses, we will have a direct, substantial impact on our local economy. According to the Chambers of Commerce, shifting just 10 percent of your holiday spending toward locally owned businesses has the potential to create an impact in just two short months, creating more jobs, increasing local tax revenue and building a more stable local economy for all of us.

As a civil lawyer, Parental Rights and Responsibilities (PRRs) form a large area of my daily practice. They make it a parent’s responsibility to safeguard and promote your child’s health, development and welfare and to provide direction and guidance in a manner appropriate to that child’s stage of development. In the event your child is not living with you, it is your responsibility to maintain a relationship and have direct contact with them on a regular basis. There are corresponding rights in order to allow you to fulfil these responsibilities. These include the right to regulate your child’s place of residence,

control, direct or guide the child’s upbringing, as well as to maintain contact if they are not living with you. Who then has PRRs? Unsurprisingly, mothers automatically do. However, fathers automatically do only if married to the mother at the time of birth or they are named on the birth certificate of a child registered after May 2006, when the Family Law (Scotland) Act ’06 was introduced. Unmarried fathers registered prior to this date do not have PRRs. A father can obtain PRRs with the mother’s agreement or, if agreement is not forthcoming, he can apply for a Court Order imposing them upon him.

SAVE THE HELENSBURGH FIREWORKS Helensburgh & District Round table have been staging a fireworks display for over 40 years. But organisers say unless substantial support is given to this year’s event, it may be the last. Robert Doherty from the Round Table said: “Due to poor weather at previous events, numbers have dwindled and is at the lowest point it has ever been for donations, which it relies on solely for funding. “A contributing factor has been the lack of a bonfire, due to the CHORD compound in the car park; but we are hoping to resurrect the bonfire for this year’s event.” The Round Table is seeking funding from any and all sources and have set up a crowdfunding page https:// crowdfunding.justgiving.com/ helensburghfireworks to enable you to support your local event Robert added: “ Businesses also benefit from the enormous footfall that the event brings

and we would urge them to take part in securing this event for the future by sponsoring the event; please contact us via our facebook page https://www.facebook.com/ HelensburghRoundTable “Volunteers are also needed on the night to help collect donations, sell novelties, steward the event and other set up tasks; please get in touch via our facebook page https:// www.facebook.com/ HelensburghRoundTable ...the event needs your help. “ The event will be held at 7pm on Saturday 7th November 2015 at the Helensburgh Pier Car Park Helensburgh & District Round Table is in its 50th Year as an organization and the fireworks have been a cornerstone of its support to the community for over 40 of those years The current table membership has 19 members, but has been as low as 8 and still managed to stage the event.

To advertise, call Lisa or Debbie now on 01436 672424

The event costs a minimum of £5,000 to stage and at its highest point raised over £14,000, with the entire profits funding the following year with surplus funding local good causes, clubs and individuals.

I ʌ • 200g dark chocolate • 50g pistachios • 40g pecans • 1 tbsp pumpkin seeds • 20g dried mango • 50g dried, ready to eat apricots

M d

Preheat the oven to 200 Fan/220 C. Break the chocolate up and tip into a bowl set over a pan of simmering water to melt. Scatter the pistachios, pecans and pumpkin seeds in a single layer on a non-stick baking sheet and put into the oven to toast for about five minutes. They can burn very quickly, so keep a close eye on them and take them out as soon as they turn golden and start to smell deliciously toasty. Quarter the apricots and chop the mango into 1.5cm pieces then mix the fruit, nuts and seeds into the melted chocolate and pour onto a tray lined with baking paper. Chill in the fridge until set and break into chunks.

This healthier version of rocky road is packed full of dried fruit, nuts and seeds. Pecans, pistachios and pumpkins seeds, toasted to give them extra flavour and bite, contrast deliciously with sweet, chewy apricot and mango, all wrapped up in dark chocolate. These ingredients offer lots of nutrients too, making a small but useful contribution towards the amount you need in a day. The chocolate is a good source of numerous minerals, especially iron, while the fruit and nuts provide fibre, vitamins A, B-6, C and E, as well as magnesium and potassium, and more iron from the apricots. Easy recipes like this one are used in nutrition workshops at Maggie’s Glasgow, part of the programme of free practical, emotional and social support that the Centre offers to people with cancer and their family and friends. This chocolate treat, taking just minutes to make, would be the perfect pick-me-up to go with a cuppa. www.maggiescentres.org/ourcentres/maggies-glasgow Maggie’s Centres are supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery
