Tribute to Rhona Weir Many people in and well beyond the area were saddened last month by the passing of Rhona Weir, who shared the same lifelong love of Scotland’s great outdoors as her famous toorie-bunneted husband, Tom. Her death at the age of 97 prompted a heartfelt tribute from the Tom Weir Statue Campaign members, with whom she had worked so closely and successfully to bring about a lasting monument to the man best known for his signature TV series Weir’s Way. Tom died in 2006, but his work as naturalist, writer and household name broadcaster has left a powerful legacy – fully justifying the statue at Balmaha that is now one of the area’s most popular visitor attractions. The tribute from the Statue Campaign read: “With great sadness and a heavy heart we have to announce that Rhona Weir, Tom’s widow, has died aged 97. “She truly was my inspiration to see our campaign come to fruition.

“Having worked closely with her every step of the way I had the privilege of getting to know this great woman behind the great man and said on many occasions that we were perhaps making the statue for the wrong person... I’ve never met a more determined woman with the biggest heart.” Very recently the campaign thanked the many thousands of visitors to Tom Weir's Rest over the past year who left donations in the donation posts on the site. The Campaign spokesperson said: “In the first full year that the posts have been in place a fantastic £2,981 has been collected. “This has meant we were able to pay the annual statue insurance bill and site maintenance costs and the site is now on a financially sustainable footing. “Some further small scale

improvements are underway with path resurfacing and additional heather planting in Tom and Rhona's Mountain Garden to keep the site fresh and in good condition to welcome the anticipated 100,000 plus visitors this year.” Tom and Rhona first got together in 1948, when she met him on the way back from a mountaineering outing to Glencoe, and as a
married couple they became synonymous with their home at Balmaha – at the very centre of the landscape they both loved so much. Our picture shows Rhona with Gordon Watson and James Fraser launching Tom Weir’s Loch Lomond Wonderland booklet at the statue site last year – most fittingly, at a now annual family event called Weirfest.

There will also be a range of free activities and games for all ages on offer at the West Dunbartonshire Leisure ‘Sports Zone’. West Dunbartonshire Provost and Chieftain of the Scottish Pipe Band Championships, William Hendrie said: “As the new Provost in West Dunbartonshire, I am honoured to be taking on the role of Chieftain for this wonderful event, which West Dunbartonshire has had the honour of hosting for the last 18 years. “Few events can boast the colour, historical significance, the sounds and sights of a pipe band competition and the Scottish Championships is one that so many people look forward to.� This great family day out runs from 9am to 6pm and spectators can enjoy a day of Highland dancing competitions, a fun fair, a wide selection of trader stalls and, of course, the unmistakable sound of the pipes and drums from some of the best pipe bands in the world.

The skirl of pipers practising is a timely reminder that Dumbarton is once again set to be the capital of Scotland’s traditional music world when it hosts the Scottish Pipe Band Championships on July 29. Now an established star of the national competition scene the Levengrove Park spectacular is also a prime showcase for talented local performers, for example 10-yearold Drum Major Beth Turner from Dumbarton, pictured here seen practising for the big day. Events will include wrestling, cycling, tossing the caber, and tug of war, but perhaps the most eagerly anticipated competition of the day will be the Scottish Highland Games Association World Heavyweight Championship.

July’s big, big local attractions include the Loch Lomond Highland Games at Moss o’Balloch – a fun event with a serious professional edge – and the Luss Highland Games. The month starts as it means to go on with the Luss event on Saturday, July 1, with the Games Field playing host (from about 11,30am) to a whole catalogue of races and other tests of strength and skill for all age groups. It also features an open piping competition, a strongman contest, and very much more besides – and will surely draw hordes of visitors to the area that weekend.

With competitors from Poland, America and Iceland taking part, it is set to be an exciting and closely contested event. The Games will close with a mass pipe band march through the main street in Balloch guaranteeing a dramatic end to a mainstay of the summer season.

But anyone who has seen the newly-released Whisky Galore, starring Eddie Izzard as the officious southern interloper Wagstaff, and Gregor Fisher as his wily adversary knows that it is a nice gentle little comedy in the mould of The Maggie and the classic TV series The Vital Spark. The main attraction, though, is the number of local film locations used in the production, with Renton’s Central Bar, Luss Village Hall and Geilston House all featured as stand-ins for scenes enacted in the mythical Outer Hebridrean isle of Little Todday.
While debate still rages quietly over where Scotland’s national film theatre should be this production allows West Dunbartonshire to throw its hat in the ring once more – particularly coming at more or less the same time as the latest series of another comedy, Still Game, was being filmed in and around Dumbarton. Very close to Glasgow and with unrivalled scenic attractions (and stately homes, etc) the area possibly needs little more than a showing in Outlander – which has hugely boosted tourism visits to sites in West Lothian – to get a real stab at the cinematic limelight.

Futsal – now available in Clydebank – is all about touch, control, balance and coordination, and is reckoned ideal for helping people with mobility issues. It aims to cover the psychological, social and emotional needs of players and, crucially, is said to be great fun. History is becoming a regular summer attraction at Dumbarton’s iconic Rock, and this month starts with a trip back to Jacobite times. Called King’s Rock Fortress, the Historic Environment Scotland performance on the weekend of July 1 and 2 is a fascinating glimpse at a colourful period most don’t automatically associate with Dumbarton. But the Rock was a strategically vital fortress for King George, and – much as with Edinburgh and Stirling – maintained a Hanoverian grip on the country at a time when Redcoat armies were being scattered by Bonnie Prince Charlie’s tartan army. We know he lost, of course, but imagine being a redcoat in a tiny garrison on the Rock, with a horde of rebel clansmen just
waiting for you to make one false move. King George’s men are typically thought of as “the baddies�, perhaps, but for the ordinary soldier – possibly enlisted forcibly, or perhaps voluntarily for food and pay – life was tough and grim. Men like these had to ensure the old Rock was capable of acting as a modern artillery fortress against a determined enemy. Captain Brian is back
Loch Lomond Shores is understandably delighted to welcome back Captain Brian Warren for another summer of great bagpipe music – and so are all his local fans. Of course his sudden appearance at this time of year is not unconnected to the fact that thousands of tourists will be descending on the area, and some of them will be vaguely expecting something definitively “Scottish” to welcome to them to such a premier site. It is a bit different in Edinburgh Old Town, or even Glasgow
city centre, where musicians of varying levels of ability are everywhere to be seen at peak season. At Lomond Shores there is possibly by now a built-in expectation that the welcoming piper will be a bit special – for one thing it is the first real indication that you are at the gateway of a great national park
on the route to the Highlands. There is also another very positive aspect to Captain Warren’s playing. Local man Brian has been tirelessly raising funds for Erskine, Scotland’s foremost provider of care for veterans and their spouses, for a number of years and last year raised nearly £2,000 by piping each Wednesday at Loch Lomond Shores. Erskine has been providing care for veterans in Scotland for a decade at four purpose-built care homes across Scotland. The money raised by Brian will help support Erskine’s work, which includes the purchase of larger items of specialist medical equipment, to smaller items such as adapted cutlery that allows the veterans to eat independently. Clare Gemmell, General Manager of Loch Lomond Shores said “Brian’s music is wonderful, I can hear it from my office and the sounds travel all round the site. “Our visitors are often found sitting nearby Brian, just soaking up the atmosphere from his bagpipes”.

Last month I ran my fi rst marathon in Stirling. It was a great experience, both on the day and in the months of training leading up to it. I have benefi ted physically from the exercise and also found running a great way to clear the mind! However, I was struck by how many of my fellow runners had also used the opportunity to raise funds for others, through various charities, to support people and their families affected by diseases such as cancer, diabetes and dementia. It was a reminder also that many people do things for others, either as volunteers or fund-raisers,

in the process gaining from it themselves. Often this work goes unnoticed and without volunteers in our local community many things would simply not happen. Juries are a cornerstone of our legal system. They can be used for criminal trials as well as some civil matters, such as personal injury cases. It is a civic duty and you must attend court if you are cited as a juror, unless you are ineligible, disqualifi ed from doing so or excused. In criminal cases it is the job of the jury to listen to all of the evidence and submissions made for both sides and then decide if the case against the accused has been proven. It is a serious role with signifi cant consequences for the individual on trial. The selection process is done
at random and taken from the electoral role. You must therefore be over eighteen years of age. Someone with a criminal record is unlikely to qualify and some jobs will make others ineligible, for example a practicing solicitor is not able to sit on a jury. In the event you are cited but would wish to be excused from attending then you must contact the sheriff clerk. Only genuine and relevant factors will be taken into consideration, such as if you have already been a juror within the last two years. Failure to attend without being properly excused will be contempt of court.

The Scottish SPCA is saying thank you to all of their local fundraising volunteers during the recent Volunteers Week. Senior Community Fundraiser Sharon Meiklejohn said, “We couldn’t do what we do without public support and we really appreciate every single volunteer. “We have volunteers who walk our dogs, help out at our centres, collect on the street and take part in our many events. “A lot of our volunteers see volunteering as a great way of meeting new people or for adding experience to your CV. It’s a fun way of being able to give back to the community and helps us to continue rescuing animals. “The Scottish SPCA receives no government or lottery funding
and we rely on the kindness and generosity of the public to continue our work. We would be extremely grateful if anyone would like to donate their time and help us raise vital funds.” Sometimes the effort was a few hours at a weekend spent manning a fundraising stall – and it all helped to bring in vital funds the charity otherwise wouldn’t receive.
