The former distillery used to be famous for its “guard geese”, which were theoretically on hand to cause a fuss if anybody tried to spirit away any of the Ballantine’s whisky casks.

But more recently all that remains of the whisky brand’s once iconic presence is the dilapidated red brick tower, said to be one of the tallest of its kind in the world – but probably not for very much longer because it, too, is set to go to make way for the ambitious new homes development.

First, of course, the scheme will have to win approval, and the next move will be a public consultation in which anyone interested in what happens to

The sight of dragonheads frowning from the prows of longships once signalled imminent invasion by the ferocious force of the Vikings.

But the June 4 event planned at Balloch Castle Country Park has nothing to do with Scandinavian marine-delivered warfare at all – and is all about raising money for a worthy cause.

Dragon-boating (deriving from south-east Asia) is a fun filled, adrenaline pumping, water sports event where teams race their dragons in a series of timed races.

Said to be ideal for experienced crews and complete beginners alike – from age 12 upwards – boats and full training are provided.

What entrants have to bring with them is a complete crew of 15 (it could be a works outing, or a big family get-together) and optionally go in fancy dress to help set the fun-filled tone of things. We’re told: “The day is all about team building and competition, with each team getting a guaranteed three timed races in the qualifying rounds.

Music, running commentary and leader board updates throughout the day add to the excitement and amazing atmosphere, which culminates in a grand final and

awards ceremony.”.

All sponsorship raised goes to the charity Bobath Scotland, and aims to ensure it can help as many people as possible across Scotland living with cerebral palsy to achieve their full potential.

It costs £500 to enter a team of up to 17, but while that sounds a lot of money if each of these teammates contributes their share it turns into a cheap day out.

The challenge is to raise as much as possible from sponsorship – and get as many to enter as possible – to make the most of the day for Bobath.

WritEr’s KEY LoCAL DAtE Leading author Irvine Welsh, most famous for “Trainspotting”, was the star attraction at a meet-the-author event in Dumbarton library.

A “sell-out” audience gathered to hear the world-famous writer speak about his new novel, The Blade Artist – which features a reprise of Trainspotting’s psychopathic Begbie (played in the film by Robert Carlyle) and to put their questions to him.

Later he said of the close encounter with Dumbarton folk: “It was fantastic.

The questions were really varied, people had a lot of chat and it was really interesting and offbeat.

Small events in libraries are great fun; you can see the whites of people’s eyes and have a

chat with them and the whole thing becomes really real. It’s nice to have a good blether.”

HIGHLANDS & ISLANDS: A new marketing drive to encourage 18-35 year olds to see more of their country.

You don’t need to book a cruise to the Bahamas to enjoy a maritime holiday to remember – just take a trip ‘doon the watter’.

For anyone still to be convinced that the Firth of Clyde has everything you need for an aquatic adventure Caledonian MacBrayne has launched a new campaign aimed at persuading local 18 to 35-year-olds (the group that seem to need most convincing) that west coast ferries are a brilliant way to see some of Scotland’s finest scenery.

The effort is fronted by two

slightly doubting “Eejits”, who have been throwing themselves into everything from history studies on Bute to Segway riding on Arran.

One attraction is said to be that reduced fares make the whole business of ferry travel a lot more pocket-friendly than they'd thought, leaving spare cash to splurge on anything from seaside rock to a pleasant meal in some

previously unvisited wayside inn.

Calmac spokesman Graeme MacFarlan said:“Research has shown that our traditional campaigns work for audiences well-versed in who we are as a company and what we do.

“But they seem to mean less to younger audiences who are, after all, the new generation of customers across the network.

“We know that this campaign is not going to appeal to everyone, but the objective of the Eejits was to create an edgy online presence that was creative and would attract the elusive millennials – the 18-35 year olds.

“It is a fresh, modern and memorable approach which showcases a snapshot of the range of activities, destinations and value for money on offer across our network.”

The two ‘eejits’ are, in fact, the BAFTA Scotland nominated Something Something duo of Ian Greenhill and Jordan Laird – who sometimes turn down massive advertising deals in favour of campaigns they can believe in.

A moribund local site is set to burst into new retail life with news that a shop's plan for Alexandria has been given the green light.

A preferred developer has been approved to take forward the redevelopment of the key site in the centre of the town.

Mitchell Way underwent an initial revamp in 2014 when work was carried out to improve the entrance, upgrade the public areas, remove dated canopies, install new lighting, shutters and signage and carrying out essential repairs.

But it has taken until now for the scheme – subject to planning permission – to become a reality.

CCG Scotland/Kingsmead Developments put forward proposals which meet the criteria set out by the council, and has submitted an offer of around £630,000 to buy the site.

It will mean the creation of a new Lidl foodstore with 145 car parking spaces, a three storey

development of both retail and residential units, and the demolition of the existing units at 30 to 40 Mitchell Way. The move will finally resolve the question of how an important location in the heart of Alexandria will be used, although residents will have to wait to see which shops, apart from Lidl, will take advantage of the new opportunity.

Council Leader Martin Rooney said: “This is an important step forward in the drive to regenerate Alexandria Town Centre.

“Local residents will now start to see early progress when the demolition works get under way to pave the way for the beginning of the new development.”

Regeneration vice convener Councillor David McBride said: “Agreeing these plans will be the final piece of the jigsaw.

“With the exciting plans for developing Lomond Galleries, coupled with the approval of this project at Mitchell Way there is a lot for the people of Alexandria to look forward to.”

BAMPOTS: Locals have had enough of these winged pests and so are taking advantage of a scheme to cut their numbers down.

Aggressive, squawking flocks of predatory seabirds are set to make local life a misery with the return of the breeding season.

So local people plagued by seagulls are being urged to take advantage of a scheme which aims to nip the annual airborne scourge in the bud before it gets properly started.

Gulls – notorious for staging airborne swoops on hapless residents, and for causing havoc by bursting rubbish bags and scattering litter - can become

aggressive as they look to protect their young, so residents are being asked to take action now.

A service provided by the council’s environmental team aims to disrupt the gulls’ nesting season by removing eggs and nests and applying spikes to roofs and chimneys to prevent them rebuilding their nests.

Residents need to report any nest

on their property immediately as live chicks will not be disturbed – it’s seen as vital to report nesting as soon as the gulls start to set up their breeding base.

Councillor Kath Ryall, convener of corporate services, said: “It is important that as soon as residents see gulls starting to build nests on their properties that they get in contact with our Environmental Health section.

“This gives our officers the chance to remove nests and eggs before they hatch.

“Quite often gulls can swoop down on people and pets that they think are posing a threat to their chicks. This can be very frightening so we would urge people to get in contact so that we can minimise any risk.”

Since the council’s control service started in 2014, more than 40 homes have had special defence measures installed.

DISGUSTING: Fly-tipping is a blight on our society but hopefully the new bid

by West Dunbartonshire Council should go towards eradicating that.

Litter isn’t just unsightly – it ruins the quality of life of anyone whose neighbourhood is blighted by an ever-present nuisance.

That has been a key message of a campaign roadshow designed to tackle litter and especially fly tipping – which can see unscrupulous people dumping anything from piles of rubbish to unwanted “white goods”, like fridges or cookers, in public places.

Like any other kind of litterlouting fly tipping is unsightly and antisocial, ruining any effort to improve an area with one thoughtless act of

social vandalism.

But because it happens every day and in many areas it’s proved difficult to know – until now – just what local people think should be done about it.

This is why a campaign roadshow has been touring West Dunbartonshire to get the message over in unmistakable terms …that fly tipping in any shape or form just isn’t acceptable.

Volunteers have been taking part in a Photovoice project which uses local photography images effectively to tell the story of how litter impacts on the lives of the participants and their neighbours.

As part of the project volunteers have taken over 3,000 arresting images across six areas in West Dunbartonshire – they’re not a pretty sight - and have written impact stories with the aim of helping to change attitudes toward litter.

The pictures will aim to convince members of the public they should do what they can to stop it happening.

Pet owners are increasingly taking heed of a long-running campaign to crack down on dog mess – thanks to a new £80 fine.

Last month the penalty for dog fouling doubled, while at the same time the take-up of dog mess bags has soared, with around two million now said to have been distributed over the past ten years.

There’s also been a substantial increase in the number of bins dog owners can use to dispose of the bags

Dumbarton’s iconic Rock will again be the setting for a colourful romp through local history next month.

The June 4 event, called Rock of Ages, is a 1,000-year-old saga brought to life by Historic Scotland, with more than 100 performers acting out a past that spans the Romans, the Vikings and the world wars.

There’s a chance to visit the blacksmith’s forge to discover how blades and bows were made, and to learn how fashions evolved - and also how the castle has been maintained over the years. The show runs from noon till 4pm.

Legal Matters with Gill Bowman BA LLB

This month: LEGAL AID Public funding is available through the Scottish Legal Aid Board (SLAB) for individuals to receive legal advice and assistance or representation on a variety of civil and criminal matters concerning Scots law.

Legal Aid is available to individuals over the age of sixteen and also those under sixteen years of age who are deemed to understand the legal scenario in question and able to provide legal instructions to a solicitor.

There are, of course, restrictions to financial eligibility. These depend on any savings you may have and also your weekly disposable income. The level of your weekly disposable income may result in funding being

made available but with a contribution also payable by you.

There are certain state benefits which will automatically qualify the applicant for Legal Aid. According to SLAB, 75% of Scottish adults would qualify for civil legal aid. It may be that this would be with a contribution.

However, that contribution is usually paid by way of monthly instalments and ensures that access to legal advice is affordable to those who require it. We would advise that it is always worth asking your solicitor for further advice regarding your own particular set of circumstances and whether you would qualify for Legal Aid.

WINDY PARK PET CEMETERY & PET UNDERTAKERS After years of burying friends pets I decided that perhaps there was an opportunity to give local people a place where they can bury and visit their faithful family pets.

“Windy Park Pet Cemetery opened late in 2014, and has already had a lot of interest. Local vets give their support for the venture, with letter of support at the initial stages of planning and continue to support us.

“We appreciate that this can be a very difficult time so we will try and make it as comfortable for you as possible. I can visit your home to collect your faithful friend and discuss with you what you want to do, and I’ll make all the necessary arrangements to ensure that you are happy with the final resting place of your friend.

“There is a wooded area which is a natural quiet place for people to scatter their pet’s ashes and

somewhere to spend time to remember and reflect on their pets. The wild flower meadow (name plaque include in the price) will lie flat on the grass so it will look like a field of wild flowers, less like a cemetery.

Strathendrick Agricultural Society is celebrating its bicentenary year, so this month’s annual Drymen Show will be extra special.

The event will be staged at the Showfield at Drymen Bridge on Saturday, May 28, and - possibly uniquely – will be judged exclusively by an all-female list of judges.

And besides the usual agricultural and light horse classes there will be many other attractions supported by the local community.

A special Rural Tent will show off a range of skills from a number of local organisations, and will also be the venue for the Drymen Show Bake Off entries.

Meanwhile in the Schools Tent there’s what’s described as a fantastic array of art and literature created by talented local pupils.

Then there’s the Rabbits and Pets Tent, where you can enjoy both the competition judging and the

chance to get better acquainted with some of the bunnies and other pets taking part.

And of course no agricultural show would be complete without its vintage tractors, not to mention the trade stands offering a wide and varied range of produce.

Five a side football, a spectacular display of birds of prey, a funfair and live music are some of the other ingredients on a programme worthy of the Society’s 200th anniversary year.

Besides all the regular events in the main ring this year’s programme includes a reenatment of how the Society was originally created – in the year after the battle of Waterloo – with agriculture examples from the past two centuries.

That is how the launch of a new Bellsmyre group is being advertised by its seven-strong committee, following what could be seen as ground-breaking progress.

The initiative has been gathering momentum for more than two years, and now has in place both a constitution and code of conduct – the necessary foundation for a Home Owners’ annual general meeting to be staged later this year.

At its regular meeting with the Housing Association members met some of the new staff for the first time, and it was an opportunity to revisit some of the key concerns on housing issues.

The consensus appears to be that valuable bridges are being built to allow people better communication, and that active involvement by people who want the best for residents – both owners and tenants – can only be good for the area.

The group’s main point of access

will be its facebook page, as this allows local people to tap in to ongoing discussions about the day to day issues that affect local home owners.

On the site it’s made plain that the whole tone of proceedings will be positive and also polite – abusive remarks won’t be tolerated – and that a strong, responsible new voice in the community can only be good for the area.

NEW ACTION SPORTS store Comes to Clydebank At Scotland’s biggest action sports store, Librance, which has newly opened in Clydebank, teenager Jenny Atkinson has her first try of a Hoverboard.

Already a Swegway fan, the 14-year-old from Helensburgh has heard great things about the one-wheeled Hoverboards and persuaded her mum to take her to the large showroom.

Jenny is impressed by the store and also the Hoverboard. She says: “There is so much to see and try in Librance, including the Hoverboard, and also Swegways, skateboards, stunt scooters and Heelys.

“I really like the cool lay-out of the shop, too, and the amount of floor space. I felt like the staff were friendly and relaxed yet they know lots about their products.”

ARTISTIC: A competition is running to try and promote the great artists who live in West Dunbartonshire

A prestigious local art contest is seeking entries from people skilled in everything from fine art to ceramics and jewellery design.

The Clydeside Open Art Show is one of the most obvious signs that West Dunbartonshire abounds with serious artistic talent – and annually produces a superb crop of works that are well worth the short journey to Clydebank to see.

Figures show that more than 6,400 people visited last year to see over 100 different exhibits – and some bought works of art to

take away, in some cases probably as intended gifts for Christmas.

All works included in the show are for sale, and Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery operates the Own Art Scheme to allow purchasers to spread the cost over 10 months, interest-free.

The annual event also sees one artist selected to receive the Provost’s Prize, which is awarded for an artwork considered

It allows local art lovers to acquire a unique original work they may be proud to exhibit in their own homes, while rewarding local talent and encouraging further endeavour.

Artists wishing to have their work included in this year’s Clydeside Open Art Show should download an application from www. west-dunbarton.gov.uk/openart and submit it online, or fill out a paper copy and return it to Clydebank Town Hall, by Friday, September 16 – there’s an admin fee of £5.

This has involved the creation of three new luxury suites, a revamped Grand Hall for up to 220 guests, and also a new bar and grill restaurant.

ALMOST AWARD: The Dumbuck Hotel in Dumbarton was pipped at the post for a prestigious award.

One of Dumbarton’s best-known hospitality venues is set to enter the summer season with a new spring in its step.

The Dumbuck House Hotel has won second place in a prestigious national hotels competition, giving it runnersup position in the category Most Improved Hotel.

This accolade is from hotel customers across the UK using online booking site LateRooms. com, so amounts to “an audience vote” from people who actually use the service.
