ROYAL HONOUR FOR A QUEEN The famous Dumbarton-built T S Queen Mary is going to be based in a permanent site near the Science Centre in Glasgow – but a new royal honour will cement her position as the Burgh’s own Queen of the Clyde. Friends of TS Queen Mary are delighted that Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal has become Royal Patron of the charity. It is a move which draws special attention to the restoration project, and is being taken by Queen Mary supporters as a highly prestigious honour. It’s also arguably one which can only help the ongoing fundraising efforts for the landmark project. Iain Sim, Friends chairman, said: ”This is a great boost for our ongoing work to restore this British icon to her former glory

and to preserve her for future generations.” Crawford Paterson, Vice Chairman, said: “This decision re-establishes the Royal link to TS Queen Mary, which was named after The Princess Royal’s great grandmother. “The ship, of course, also carried Queen Elizabeth (the Queen Mother), the Princess Elizabeth – now Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II – and the Princess Margaret.” The vessel was built at Denny’s

shipyard in Dumbarton in 1933, and her return to the Burgh would have been an extraordinary heritage asset – and a potent reminder of the Burgh’s one time salient position in the story of Clyde shipbuilding. However she will still be on Clydeside, in the city from which countless people once boarded her for Clyde pleasure cruises, which finally ceased only in 1977. Queen Mary was the largest and the last vessel built to operate “all the way excursion sailings” from Glasgow. Her passenger complement of 2086 (when built) made her the Firth’s largest carrier, and she had the largest gross tonnage (870 originally) of any on the river.

She was a three class, comfortable and well appointed, two-funnelled steamer, described in publicity material as “palatial”. Since restoration work began on the vessel some £2 million has been raised and invested, thanks to donations from across Britain and overseas. Meanwhile a number of celebrities have pledged their support, including actor and author Robbie Coltrane OBE, who is patron of the charity. As a museum, the restored vessel will connect local people with their river and its industrial heritage – not to mention the lost world of “doon the watter” - and there’s to be an ambitious focus on activities for schools. The vessel will also be a glamorous setting for corporate functions, concerts and special occasions – particularly festivals.

THE CIRCUS COMES TO TOWN Expect death-defying aerial artistry and spectacular aerial acrobats when Big Kids Circus comes to Lomond Shores this month (April 9 to 14). Offering a dazzling display of live entertainment from some of the country’s most talented performers. The circus is the inspiration of Kiril Kirilov and his wife Bilianna, who combine their talents in stage management, design and choreography to produce effects of balletic brilliance. The family tradition in the circus world now spans over 50 years on the road, including three generations of the family. In a world increasingly given over to virtual events which lack the human touch this is stage performance at its most raw and energetic, taking the audience to the edge of their seats time after time. It is a true family enterprise, too, as the couple’s son Deyvid and his partner Lera are day to day show

managers, while daughters Julie and Nicole are also actively involved. They and their co-artistes have played to ecstatic audiences all over the UK, and with this latest show are making a welcome return to West Dunbartonshire at what will hopefully be the onset of spring – a great way to start the season.

ingenuity you would expect of modern-day seasoned performers.

The company enjoyed a special year in 2018, celebrating the 250th anniversary of the launch of Britain’s first ever circus ring in London by entrepreneur Philip Astley. All these years later Big Kids Circus are honouring the proudest traditions established all those years ago, bringing them fully up to date with all the pizzazz and

NEW DAWN FOR INDIA STREET

19/20 Lime Road Broadmeadow Ind. Est. Dumbarton - G82 4RP

Central Alexandria Tenants and Residents Association (CATRA) must be pleased that their comments about the need for improvements on the town’s India Street were so successful – because nothing less than a dramatic improvement has been achieved. Months of work brought about major change for the better after the green but down at heel space was said to be giving a negative impression of the area, and perhaps the most eyecatching change has been the unveiling of a mural by the splendidly-named artist Barry the Cat.

of CATRA, and assisted them to develop their ideas into a project.

Community members also organised repairs to the broken wall, as well as installation of three benches and a wheelchairfriendly picnic table.

“This project has already been such an inspiration and tenants are considering what further improvements could be made locally, as well as how to use the new-look area for future events.”

Housing and communities convener Councillor Diane Docherty said: “The communities team listened to the views of the local residents and members

“Their ideas and ambition means that the project now offers the community an area where they can relax and enjoy the ambiance and natural beauty of this river side location.

Caroline McAllister, vice convener, said: “This has made a real difference to the look of the area and breathed new life into it.

“The idea of Your Community is to allow residents the chance to have a real say in what needs to be improved in their area, and give them real pride in their surroundings. “Having spoken to the residents, I know that the initiative has done just that here.” The project was funded by the Your Community Improvement Fund, which supports communitybased projects where residents have aspirations to improve their area and can demonstrate an appetite from their community to get involved and make lasting positive change.

Author Mary Irvine

Called “The Wind Whispers her Name” it’s an intriguing and haunting tale of a writer who seeks inspiration for his work in the atmospheric setting of a Greek isle, only to become drawn into a strange and unsettling relationship with somebody whose own story threatens to engulf him. Mary found her own inspiration for the work during a sojourn of several weeks’ duration in Greece – being “on location” seemed the logical thing to do – but far from

She obviously isn’t giving the plot away, but while it’s certainly “a love story” the main question seems to be “whose?” The unfolding drama is set, appropriately enough, against the authentic backdrop of her Greek island and its celebrations. As anyone who has been in the more rural parts of Greece will tell you the annual red letter days in the calendar are something to remember – particularly Easter, which is marked with

an exuberance and a level of community involvement you seldom find in Scotland. Many people dream of writing a novel, and there’s no doubt it can be a tough gig to sustain an idea for thousands upon thousands of words, yet Mary is a relative newcomer to creative writing. So how does she do it? “All writers have their own work schedules,” she says. “I write something every day. It may take only one hour or many - I work on several projects at a time because it has always worked for me.” You’ll find details of Mary’s novel online via Amazon.

Local News | April 2019

A STORY ABOUT ENDURANCE There are just a handful of names which most people can immediately call to mind when you say “famous explorer” – and of course Captain Scott inevitably leads the field. With him in that same elite league of dauntless courage is another Briton, Ernest Shackleton, whose adventures are the stuff of legend and, for all but the very brave, of nightmares. Now his story is being told in a special exhibition at Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery, which deals specifically with Sir Ernest’s heroic exploration of the Antarctic from 1914 to 1917. It might seem strange that at a time when his country was engulfed in war he and his crew

were in the middle of an icebound nowhere, but the record of what these dauntless men achieved – and risked – continues to thrill and inspire today. The exhibition, on loan from the Royal Geographical Society (with the Institute of British Geographers) is reckoned one of the greatest ever photographic records of human survival.

FENCING & GROUNDWORKS

Images taken by expedition photographer Frank Hurley were selected and saved from the sinking Endurance by Hurley and Shackleton – and have been preserved from the original, fragile glass plate negatives by the Royal Geographical Society.

New Fencing Fencing Repairs Decking Patios Driveways Dry Stone Dyking Artificial Grass

The vessel was completely trapped in ice in early 1915 and sank ten months later with all crew forced to move onto the floating ice.

Shackleton then began an extraordinary 800-mile voyage in little more than a rowing boat to a whaling station before returning to save his crew. The photographic plates vividly capture the spirit of endurance, trust, courage and judgement shared by Shackleton and his team. Alasdair MacLeod, Head of Enterprise and Resources from the Royal Geographical Society (with IBG), said: “We are delighted to be working with Clydebank Museum and Art Gallery and that they are giving us the opportunity to share this extraordinary story through our Collections with the widest audience possible.”

Comic-Con is a fantastic celebration of everything people of all ages love about comics, and the whole world of superheroes and villains, sci-fi and collectable graphic art. It’s only when you see the range of special features at this remarkable gathering that you can grasp what a global phenomenon the enthusiasm for, say, Star Wars truly is. The first time this show appeared at Balloch there was a stampede to see it, and scores of local fans have been willing it to come back.

THE STORY OF CLAN LENNOX In what may be one of its most appropriate monthly talks so far, the April session of the Lennox Heritage Society centres on a fascinating talk about none other than Clan Lennox … delivered by Gordon Lennox. The talk, on Wednesday April 10 (preceded by the AGM) will see Gordon explore his own past, as well as that of the historic figures who played such an important role in Scotland’s story. Until the mid 18th century the Lennox was a wild and unruly area where local rules strictly applied, and in earlier times it was the safe country where Robert the Bruce looked both for support and sanctuary in his David versus Goliath battle to win the throne of Scotland and free his country from tyranny. The earldom of Lennox has

an ancient and proud history, and once covered not only Dunbartonshire but also large areas of surrounding counties – including Stirlingshire, Renfrewshire and Perthshire. This is why the one time seat of the Earls was in the aptly-named Lennoxtown, now a backwater town in East Dunbartonshire. Before the arrival of feudalism this important Lowland region was ruled by the Celtic Mormaers of Levenax (so the name derives from the river), and that early history is still shrouded in mystery. However the name Lennox was seldom far from the

Handyman all jobs, inside and outside

limelight during Scotland’s turbulent Middle Ages, and one octogenarian Earl was even beheaded in 1425. The name was to become closely associated with royalty – one Earl was the grandfather of King James VI of Scotland and I of England – and throughout every era “Lennox” appears as refuge, power broker, key supporter or challenger – it is a story which anybody interested in their area’s history will find fascinating. Society meetings are at 7pm in the Concord Centre in Dumbarton, and annual subscription is £10 – or you can pay £2 for a single talk.

LET’S TALK ABOUT THE BLITZ Dumbarton’s MP has used the recent 78th anniversary of the Clydebank Blitz to call for a debate on the long term impact the 1941 catastrophe has had on the whole area. In the UK parliament Martin Docherty-Hughes MP spoke about the social, economic and psychological consequences of the devastating raids, which caused massive loss of life and destruction of property over two days in March. Many local acts of heroism were performed, not least by the crew of the free Polish frigate Piorun, docked at Clydebank at the time, whose crew manned the vessel’s anti-aircraft guns all night. Mr Hughes said: “My constituency is best known by many for its shipping history, whether it be John Brown and Company of Clydebank or Denny of Dumbarton.”

Fit for Life walk in Balloch Castle Country Park

FIFTEEN MINUTES TO FITNESS The National Park Authority has been awarded a Walk at Work Award from Paths for All in recognition of the organisation’s new Fit for Life pilot scheme.

He recounted how a minister in an adjournment debate described it as the worst raid, in proportion to the numbers, to happen anywhere in the UK during the war. The MP says it’s time to examine the long-term economic and social consequences as well as the mental health consequences of the murderous Nazi attacks. The leader of the House has advised him to take his initiative further, and find whether there’s a mood to consider how we should commemorate the Blitz more effectively.

The award celebrates employers who promote everyday walking in the workplace and the National Park Authority is one of the first organisations to be given the award.

reduce stress and increase levels of team work.

The optional scheme allows staff to take part in a 15 minute walk or other physical activity such as running or cycling in the National Park, within work time, every working day.

The pilot is said to have been very well received, with over 120 staff members signing up to take part, and last year staff collectively walked 93,000 minutes.

The nine month pilot, which began in September last year, is designed to give staff time away from the office to help improve overall wellbeing,

April 2019 | What's Up Doc?

JOIN MUNRO CENTENARY PROJECT What's Up Doc? with Dr Nick Dunn

This month: LEARN TO LOVE YOUR LIVER… Some diseases hit you between the eyes, like heart attacks and strokes, but others creep up slowly and silently over years, like fatty liver disease. The first we often know about this is when blood tests are abnormal.

Keen walkers are invited to join a project to celebrate the centenary of the death of Sir Hugh Munro. “The Munro Table” will remember Munro, who died in 1919, and is credited with creating the UK’s most famous lists of mountain summits. The Scot identified the Scottish mountains with a summit of more than 3000ft. These 282 mountains are known as the Munros. Now The Munro Table project is calling for walkers, runners and climbers to make a special trip to the Munros. Over the next year, each of these Munro baggers will record their summit by writing an account and taking a photograph or creating an artwork at the top. Eddie Summerton, the creator of

the project, said: “The aim is to collect together all the accounts, photographs and artworks from each summit to form an archival boxed set of Munro Table publications.”

You may be told your liver enzymes are raised, and the first question is about alcohol intake. If tests remain abnormal after reducing this (if necessary) then an ultrasound scan might show “fatty liver”.

Eddie envisages that the Munro baggers will write about a variety of experiences, such as weather and wildlife, as they hike their Munro. In due course, The Munro Table will be displayed in a variety of locations such as galleries, educational venues and at festivals, for others to see.

This can lead to scarring and cirrhosis over time, or rarely even liver failure. Although alcohol can be blamed, there are many other causes

including viruses, antibodies, copper or iron overload, metabolic problems, and obesity. If a cause is identified, drug treatments or lifestyle changes may help. Otherwise a blood test once or twice a year is advised to give warning of any worsening, as it can remain stable. The liver weighs 1.5kg, its jobs including removing toxins and drugs from the body, metabolising fat, protein and sugars as well as making essential proteins, so it’s definitely worth looking after. Prevention is best, and healthy living with regular exercise, sensible drinking limits and keeping trim, will protect your liver as well as your heart!

VALE STORE VEG GOES UNWRAPPED Alexandria’s Aldi branch will be among those across the country offering cabbages and cauliflowers without any plastic packaging – as part of a trial to see if the concept chimes with customers. The nationwide promotion is claimed likely to prevent an incredible half a tonne of plastic across Aldi’s Scottish estate, and if rolled out across the UK would remove 110 tonnes of plastic wrapping a year from the chain’s fresh produce lines. The trial, which is now underway, focuses on five veg lines - Savoy cabbage, red cabbage, white cabbage, pointed cabbage and cauliflower. It follows the supermarket’s decision to phase out black plastic trays on four fresh produce lines, replacing them with clear, recyclable alternatives last year.

A VISIT FROM A CELTS LEGEND Celtic and Scotland football legend Danny McGrain has paid a special visit to Dumbarton’s Crosslet House to raise awareness of people living with dementia. The former professional footballer reminisced about past games, and clearly enjoyed fun conversation and lively debates with residents. There was plenty to talk about – Danny played 659 competitive games for Celtic between 1970 and 1987, winning seven League Championships, five Scottish Cups and two Scottish League Cups. The event was organised by Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland (SMFS), which uses the power of memories to help improve the wellbeing of older people - tackling dementia, social isolation and depression.

The pupils researched the former footballer’s playing career and

Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland is thought to be the first of its kind to be dedicated to the development and use of sports reminiscence, inclusive physical activities and intergenerational activities to support isolated older people across the country. Allan Macleod, chairman of West Dunbartonshire Health and Social Care Partnership, said: “Dementia is something which affects many individuals and their families and we are very grateful to both Sporting Memories Foundation Scotland and Danny McGrain for arranging this visit and spending valuable time with the residents.”

HEROES OF THE THUNDERBOLT

Thursday 4th

Their country was in the foul grip of the Nazis, their people subjected to mass murder, torture and enslavement – but on a dockside in Clydebank the sailors of the Polish destroyer Piorun (“Thunderbolt”) had not yet begun to fight.

Dumbarton Christian Aid Lent Lunch Riverside Church 12-1.30pm. Where for £3 you get soup, bread, cheese and tea or coffee. All funds raised go to help with the amazing work of Christian Aid across the world. Also on Thursday 11th

Saturday 6th

The incredible story of the free Polish vessel’s wartime escapades was recalled with pride in a recent ceremony in which a commemorative plaque was laid near the site of the Titan Crane.

Piorun won immortality as the vessel which first sighted the pride of Hitler’s Kriegsmarine, sealing her doom by pinpointing her position to a British fleet desperate to avenge the sinking of HMS Hood.

Easter Raffle St. Augustine's Dumbarton 10am-12pm (Hall) 2-4pm (Church). All money raised will be split between St. Augustine's and St. Mungo's Churches. Excellent prizes. Tickets available from Anne Bardsley or at the door on the day.

Piorun – transferred to the free Polish service to replace a vessel lost at sea – had been built at John Brown’s shipyard, which is where she was berthed to take on supplies when waves of Luftwaffe bombers arrived to bring death and destruction over two nights in March 1941.

It is recorded that the tiny ship signalled to the giant Bismarck “I am a Pole” before, almost insanely, opening fire – and that she ignored orders to withdraw for over an hour as the Nazi behemoth responded, one huge shell missing by just 20 yards.

Saturday 27th

The Polish sailors’ deck-mounted anti-aircraft guns spat relentless defiance at the bombers flying overhead, eventually firing off an entire load of ammunition only just taken on board.

Dunbartonshire Federation Show Kilmaronock Millennium Hall, Gartocharn. Public viewing from 1.303.30pm. Tea Room, Raffle and Sales Table. Admission Charge. dunbartonshirefederation@ outlook.com

The Poles’ reckless gallantry was echoed in wartime exploits which included the pivotal role played by Polish squadron 303 in the Battle of Britain, the capture of the fortress monastery of Monte Cassino, the suicidal bravery of Polish airborne troops at Arnhem, and the matchless heroism of the doomed Warsaw Rising of 1944.

Two months later the ship, commanded by Eugen Plawski, was to play a lead role in the hunt Polish 1st Armoured Division all but for the giant Nazi battleship the destroyed a Nazi army in the Falaise Bismarck.

Pocket during the same year, albeit at great sacrificial cost, and helped to liberate the Netherlands – its great commander, Stanislaw Maczej, has finally been honoured with a statue in Edinburgh, where he spent his life after the war.

Local News | April 2019 At the Clydebank plaque ceremony last month Provost William Hendrie was joined by Michał Zawisza, Vice Consul at the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland.

GEILSTON GARDENS

The plaque’s simple inscription reads: “Dedicated to the crew of the ORP Piorun in defence of Clydebank during the Clydebank Blitz, 13 March 1941. Provost Hendrie said: “Unveiling the plaque on behalf of the people of Clydebank and West Dunbartonshire to commemorate the crew of the ORP Piorun was such a privilege.

Painting by a local artist of Piorun in action at her berth in Clydebank during the Blitz

The Geilston Gardens at Cardross opened for the new season on April 1st and Friends of the Garden are holding a Photo Walk this month to show off its highlights. Local photographer Katheryn Polley will lead participants through the Gardens and Woodlands, assisting with the selection of subject matter, composition and framing.

“We will be forever indebted to these men, who kept their guns firing on enemy aircraft over two nights, and helped prevent the total obliteration of Clydebank.

Geilston is regarded as one of the National Trust for Scotland’s hidden gems. It is described as intimate and tranquil, with the secluded appeal of a private garden.

April 2019 | Legal Matters

KEEP YOUR DOG ON A LEASH

with Gill Bowman BA LLB

The National Park is urging dog owners to keep pets on a lead – or at the very least under full control – when walking over any agricultural land this spring.

This month: SIMPLIFIED DIVORCE The breakdown of a marriage and subsequent legal process of divorce can be an emotionally difficult time. Fortunately, in Scotland we have the benefit of the Simplified Divorce Procedure.

At this time of year pregnant ewes and lambs are particularly vulnerable to sheep worrying, with often devastating consequences for everyone. The call comes at a time when figures show that the number of incidents of sheep being harassed and on occasion killed has risen over a ten year period. In spring, however, animals do not have to be seriously injured for it to lead to lethal consequences, as dog attacks lead to miscarriages. Scottish Natural Heritage comments: “We’re encouraging dog owners to take extra care around livestock when enjoying the great outdoors this spring.

Legal Matters

“Our multi-partner campaign (with police, the National Farmers Union, etc) offers advice to help dog owners explore their local natural areas without disturbing young animals. “National radio and digital adverts will help spread key messages to keep dogs out of fields with young farm animals, and on a short lead or close at heel when livestock are around - plus advice to farmers and land managers on how to support responsible access.”

This is also often referred to as the ’Do It Yourself’ divorce and can only be used in the appropriate circumstances. The only ground for divorce in Scotland is the irretrievable breakdown of the marriage and this can be established in different ways. For the purpose of a simplified divorce, it can be established on the basis that you have been separated for one year and your spouse consents to the divorce, there have been two years of separation or that either you or your spouse have been issued

an interim gender recognition certificate. There must not be any children of the marriage under the age of 16 and there can be no outstanding financial matters. Any financial arrangements can be agreed before applying for divorce by way of a Minute of Agreement. The benefits of using this procedure are that parties do not require to attend court and it is cost effective. The fee for lodging an application with the court is currently £123 and there can be a fee exemption for those on certain benefits. Further information can be found on the Scottish Courts website www.scotcourts.gov.uk or you can consult your solicitor for advice.

GREEN LIGHT FOR LIBRARY PLAN Plans to boost Alexandria Library services with a museum to celebrate the town’s history and heritage have been approved.

Alexandria Library

The £331,000 project will create a separate multi-use space on the first floor, and there will also be a lift between the floors. Meanwhile the changes will add facilities for local meetings, adding a new dimension of community use that could benefit many local groups and organisations. The building – with its stolid neoclassical Victorian design - dates from 1884, and although it is reputedly the area’s most popular library is widely seen as being in need of substantial upgrading. Cultural services convener Bailie Denis Agnew said: “Alexandria

Library is a magnificent building and these works will allow full access to all areas of the building providing an opportunity for residents and visitors alike to engage with the local history of the area.” Vice convener Councillor Karen Conaghan said: “This is a great investment to Alexandria Library and will further enhance the great facilities already on offer at the branch. “The addition of the museum will allow visitors from the local community and further afield to see artefacts and celebrate the rich history of the Vale of Leven.”

GET WITH THE PROGRAMME… Katie White, female winner of all three Babcock 10k races last year, continues her 10 week training programme. This month we give you the remaining 5 weeks of the beginners’ programme. Try to complete the sessions as best you can, completing the run will have make you stronger and prepare you both physically and mentally for the 10K race. Week 6 From now on, the runs on Tuesday don’t have any walking breaks but instead are made up of intervals of easier and faster paced running. The easier pace running should now be sufficient to allow you to recover enough to maintain the faster running sections. Week 7 For the last few weeks of the plan there are no walking breaks in either the Tuesday or Thursday runs, but over the previous weeks you should have increased your stamina so that they are no longer needed. On Thursday, aim to run at a comfortable pace that you can maintain for the duration of

RACE!

On Saturday the WEEK 9 timed 5K run from Week 4 will be WEEK 10 repeated. Compare your time and how you felt this week with your previous attempt; hopefully you will see some improvement. The parkrun is also good practice for the race as you can get used to starting in a big group of people and not starting too fast. Also, try and wear what you plan to wear for the race to check that it is comfortable. You can use your time from the 5K to get a good idea of the time and pace you can expect to run for the 10K, although remember that you probably won’t be able to maintain the same pace for 10K as you can for 5K, so double your 5K time and add 2-5 minutes to get a

realistic target for the 10K. Week 9 With just 1 week to go until the race, the longer run on Saturday is 1 hour running, which if you can do without a walking break or just a short walk, you will be able to complete the 10K with no problems. Week 10 As it is just a few days until the race the aim of this week is to just do a little bit of running to ensure you are well rested and ready for the 10K on Thursday. If you have been able to complete the previous weeks of the plan

then you should be well prepared for the event and confident that you can complete 10K. Plan ahead so you don’t have anything to worry about on the day of the race. Aim to arrive at the event early so you have plenty of time to get ready and have a short jog to warm up. Remember not to start too fast, start at a steady pace that you think you can maintain for the whole distance and if you are feeling good towards the end then you can increase your pace. Most importantly after all your hard work, enjoy the event. Good luck!

ABSEILING FROM THE WHEEL NEW MUSEUM The Scottish SPCA is giving its West Dunbartonshire supporters the RESOURCE opportunity to abseil down Scotland’s iconic boat lift at the Falkirk Wheel on April 20. If you’ve already “done” the Titan Crane – or maybe even the Forth Rail Bridge – this could be the next bucket list challenge worth completing in aid of a worthy cause. Scotland’s animal welfare charity are looking for animal lovers to show their support for abused, abandoned and injured animals in Scotland while taking in some of the country’s most breathtaking views. TRIO’S AMBITIOUS TRIG RUN FOR MRT attach theodolite equipment for charting the lay of the land. Modern technologies, such as GPS, mean the traditional trig pillar is generally not necessary any more but many thousands of trig pillars still remain dotted across rural areas and on hills and mountains. Three runners aim to reach all 19 trig points covered by the Lomond Mountain Rescue Team, in only 24 hours

Three runners are taking on an extraordinary challenge to raise cash and awareness of a local emergency service this month. Jamie Aarons, Jenny Allen and Alex Berry form an all-female trio that aims to run to all 19 “trig” points in the 1000 square mile area covered by Lomond Mountain Rescue Team (MRT). Stirlingshire runners Jamie and Jenny and Alex, from Glasgow, will need to cover 60 miles on foot over rough and boggy land, as well as a total ascent of 16,404ft. The trio hope to finish their Trig Point Challenge in an incredible 24 hours on the weekend of April 6 and 7.

Dumbarton, Vale of Leven, Balloch & Drymen

Money raised through sponsorship and donations will go to Lomond MRT, which is one of the busiest volunteer rescue teams in Scotland. The trig points – or triangulation stations – form part of a huge mapping project, the Retriangulation of Great Britain, undertaken by Ordnance Survey (OS) in the early 20th century. More than 6500 concrete pillars were installed across the UK countryside from 1936. The pillars allowed surveyors to

The trio’s first trig point on April 6 will be on the 2244ft summit of Maol Mor in the Trossachs. Maol Mor is also the most northerly trig in the Lomond MRT boundary area. They will finish the challenge at the trig on the top of Ben Lomond at 3193ft (974m), close to Loch Lomond. The most southerly is located at a height of 561ft on Hilton Golf Course, in Milngavie. They will be supported along the way by friends and family. Jamie, whose partner Andy Taylor is a member of Lomond MRT, said: “We thought it would be a great idea to visit all the trigs in

THEY’RE OUR TOP ACHIEVERS Dunbartonshire Chamber of Commerce has newly launched a series of Showcase events designed to share valuable insights into some of the area’s most successful businesses.

The first of the events has just taken place at Glenhead Engineering - an innovative and award-winning engineering company headed up by Operations Manager Sharon Colvan, who provides leadership for the business in one of the UK’s most maledominated sectors. It’s one of several inspirational West Dunbartonshire business achievements the Chamber will be highlighting as the programme unfolds throughout the year.

Under Sharon and the management team’s stewardship the business has increased its turnover more than ten-fold from £300k in 2006 to £3.5m in 2018. Glenhead now has over 600 customers, with engineered components being exported to Russia, Norway, EU, Kuwait, India, UAE, Algeria and USA.
