School art on display

Talented senior pupils from three local secondary schools will be proudly displaying their art works at a special exhibition. The Class Acts 2015 show offers a unique opportunity for pupils in fifth and sixth years at Bearsden, Douglas and Boclair academies to have their best art displayed in a professional gallery environment. The annual exhibition is being held at Lillie Art Gallery in Milngavie this month. Five other secondary schools from East Dunbartonshire will also be part of the display that extends over two gallery spaces. Esmee Thompson, Cultural Coordinator at East Dunbartonshire Leisure & Culture Trust, says: “The

exhibition will be the first time that most of the pupils have seen their artworks displayed in a professional gallery environment. It’s an exciting opportunity and is popular among family and friends.” This year’s Class Acts exhibition launches on Friday December 11 from 6pm until 8pm. It will continue until Thursday December 17, except on Sunday and Monday when the gallery is closed. Esmee says: “Each year the support we get from the schools

is fantastic. The teachers and heads of department help out with putting on the exhibition and it’s really good to see how much the pupils enjoy having their artworks on display. It’s a great opportunity.” This is the third time that Lillie Art Gallery has hosted the festive event. James Higgins, from the gallery, says: “The Class Acts exhibition is a welcome addition to our gallery space at this time of year. It runs alongside other shows, including our Christmas Art and Craft Exhibition.” Lillie Art Gallery is on Station Road, Milngavie. Tel: 0141 956 5536. *Artwork is from last year's event.

church’S neW BeginningS there was none available. “We thought it would be a wonderful idea if some of our land could be used for sheltered housing to serve the area and we could have a small worship and meeting area as well.”

NEW BEGINNINGS: The Bearsden & Milngavie Methodist Church has been demolished to make way for a great new building.

Bearsden and Milngavie worshippers are looking forward to the opening of their new Methodist church building this month. For more than 100 years, local people have attended The Methodists of Anniesland Church on Bearsden Road. But after falling into disrepair, it was decided that the old church would need to be pulled down and a new one built to replace it.

Gillian Gibb is the secretary of the church council. She says: “The Methodist people have been coming from Bearsden and Milngavie to Anniesland to worship since 1903. But, sadly, our old church was becoming too costly to run and repair.

The new building, on a different part of the plot on Sutcliffe Road, is now set to open for worship again.

“At the same time, we knew of various people who were getting older and wanted sheltered accommodation in that area, but

“It was important to many people that a place of worship remained in the same place. We were sad to see the lovely red sandstone church go but people can still worship together in the new building and we are very happy with the new arrangement.” In the church’s fi rst month of opening, there will a Christmas Carol Service at 11am on Christmas Eve. This month:

Straight from the heart… us, usually leaving a few to spare! Two million units of blood are used every year in the UK, requiring 6,000 donations daily. It is used to replace blood lost during major operations, serious accidents or major bowel hemorrhage. Babies can benefi t from transfusions in the womb before they are born, and it can help people with serious blood disorders such as leukaemia. It can only be stored for 35 days, so stocks need continually topped up.

Many think of Christmas as a time of giving. This year remember there is a gift which costs us nothing, but may be a life-saver for someone who we’ll never meet. Blood cannot be manufactured and transfusions are dependent upon people who give blood. It is the vital life source which carries oxygen and food to our organs, and contains immune cells which protect against infection. However only 4% of people well enough to do so actually give blood. Our bodies contain 5 litres of blood, and we have around 25 trillion red cells inside

Consider giving a special gift this winter. Contact scotblood.co.uk to fi nd out if you can be a donor, or phone 0345 90 90 999.

fat’S the Way to ride ROOFING CLADDING GUTTERS

Our magazine writer, Fiona Russell, takes a new style of mountain bike, a fat bike, for a spin in Mugdock Country Park, near Milngavie. Are you looking for more fun on country trails and a bike that is easier to ride than anything else you might have tried? Then try a fat bike. A small fl eet of Genesis Caribou and Trek Farley fat bikes are available for hire in a range of sizes from Mugdock Country Cycles at Mugdock Visitor Centre, near Milngavie.

Flat Roofs • Lead Work Roughcasting • Tiling Downpipes • uPVC Fascias EST 1983

0141 956 2666 info@prime-roofing.co.uk

The latest craze in off-road cycling, fat bikes look like mountain bikes but with oversized – or “fat” – tyres. The low infl ation pressure of the four-inch tyres offer superb suspension and amazing traction on wet, muddy, rocky and even snowy terrain. The bikes were originally invented for the snow of Alaska and the sandy deserts of New Mexico but the style has since been adopted by mainstream bike brands as a fun cycling trend.

And they are perfect for our Scottish trails, hills and winter weather. I confess I had imagined the fat bikes would be heavy and hard to ride but they are the opposite. Easy gearing, a lightweight Trek frame and the super fat tyres offer a ride that is as comfortable as an armchair and as grippy as a tank. And while I am not a skilled off-road cyclist I found myself searching out bumps, rocks and drop-offs because the fat bike made it so easy to ride this terrain. With confi dence, I raced through deep mud and large puddles, bounced over rocks and stuck to slippery board walks on the wide

network of trails at Mugdock park. I sailed down bumpy descents and even managed to ride up several rocky sections that are usually beyond my ability. I did all this with a huge grin on my face. If you fancy trying a fat bike, check out www. mugdockcountrycycles.com

STRESS FREE CHRISTMAS females in the family. So we will reiterate this invaluable advice. Women do not, despite all their protestations, want a surprise, they want the exact item, the exact size and colour -

So when did you last really look around the area .You’ll be amazed at the range of goods

and services on offer. Jewellery and gifts, accessories, hardware, delis, furniture, antiques, crafts ,galleries, china, crystal ware, fashion, flowers, shoes, as well as the butcher , baker, and probably somewhere a candlestick maker are complemented by hairdressers, beauticians, opticians pharmacists, and when your feet get sore some of the best coffee shops you’ll find anywhere. But remember too a great Christmas is not all about maxing out the credit card. There are many more important details that go into a great holiday season. Experiencing some of the wonderful concerts on in the area, seeing distant friends and family, making your own decorations and if you are really lucky, a log fire. Whatever your Christmas tradition, make it a fun one. And check out your local retailers. Eat out at The Dug Out Milngavie and Bearsden Sports Club are trialling an outdoor café this winter. The Dug Out is open at weekends and is the perfect place to enjoy a warming bowl of soup or a bacon roll. Fiona Drummond, from the club on Auchenhowie Road, says: “People who eat at The Dug Out, run by Chris Caters, are also welcome to watch a hockey match, or a game of tennis. And dogs are welcome, too! “Or perhaps they would like to look inside the facilities to see what else we offer at the club.”

Ever gone to look out your smart black shoes for a special occasion only to find that they're in dire need of a polishing and you're all out of polish? Well your saviour can be found no further than the fruit bowl. Shine your black shoes by rubbing them with a banana skin.

Following on from last month’s topic of Parental Rights and Responsibilities, I have been asked to further explain how a father can obtain these PRRs. The first recommendation would be to approach the other parent and request that they enter into an agreement which will convey the rights and responsibilities on you which you would have enjoyed had you been registered on the child’s birth certificate or married to the mother. Such an agreement is provided for under S.4 of the Children (Scotland) Act 1995. The agreement must be registered in the Books of

Council and Session in order to be effective. As a member of the Family Law Association, I would always advocate that it is in the best interests of those involved to attempt to resolve family disputes directly with each other. However, when this is not possible the courts can be asked to adjudicate and a court action can be raised against the other parent. Section 11 of the ’95 Act allows a person to seek an order granting PRRs on them. It is often the case that this type of court action will also include a request to the court to regulate a specific aspect of parental rights, such as contact or residence issues.

car Boot charity BooSt A cheque for £2,000, raised at the weekly Car Boot Sale in Milngavie, has been donated to cancer charity, the White Lily Fund. The While Lily Fund was set up by Angela Brune MBE, of Bearsden, after she faced her own struggle with breast cancer. The charity raises funds to support cancer care in the West of Scotland. Ralph launched the Sunday sale, which takes place in the Homebase car park from 7am to 11.30am, after he lost his wife to cancer some 20 years ago. Ralph says: “At the car boot sale we ask people to pay for their pitch and this money is then collected for charity. We have chosen this time to hand the money raised to the brilliant local charity, the While Lily Fund.” The cost for a pitch is £10 per car, £12 for small vans and £15 for larger vans.

Be a good neighbour this Christmas Its December again! Full of festive Christmas Cheer but it can be a lonely time for elderly people. Home Instead Glasgow is urging local people to be a good neighbour and watch out for elderly neighbours. Our team at the offi ce has come up with the following ‘good neighbour’ ideas: 1. Catch up over a cuppa Instead of simply popping a Christmas card through the door, why not drop by with a card and box of biscuits? 2. Young at heart Older people are still very young at heart. If you have children, why not suggest they pop round to an elderly neighbour’s with you for a game of Monopoly or Cluedo? 3. Casserole club Next time you are preparing a casserole, add some extra ingredients to stretch the dish and

take a portion round to a neighbour. It’s a gesture that they will really appreciate and ensure they get a wholesome, nutritious meal. 4. Shopping can be fun Christmas shopping can be stressful at the best of times so imagine how worrying it might be for an elderly person. Why not suggest that you take a neighbour shopping? It could be as simple as a lift in to town or helping them to fi nd and buy presents. 5. Deck the halls Could you help a neighbour put up their tree or some decorations? Why not offer your services? You could help to get the decorations out of the loft and make their house look festive and bright. Have a fantastic Christmas and New Year folks!

make muSic for charity Kilmardinny Music Circle has partnered with Oxfam’s poignant Refugee Crisis Appeal for this year’s popular Christmas concert. The concert, on December 4 at 7.30pm, in Kilmardinny House will also be their last before the establishment closes for council refurbishment. Andrew Logan, chair of the music circle, says: “We have worked with Oxfam in the past on a very low-key small scale basis and it feels like a natural development now to be more active to support their vital work through our own. “The Christmas Concert should be a wonderful event. It offers an evening of Medieval Christmas music from the Canty trio, which is Scotland’s only professional Medieval music group, and aptly creates a link with the charity appeal.” The concert will include rare

and William Taylor (medieval harps) and was formed in 1998, It comprises the regular female singers with Cappella Nova, Scotland’s leading early music vocal ensemble.

We are delighted that Canty will be with us for our Christmas concert and we are sure it will be a fantastic evening.

The expert voices and virtuoso harp of Canty Trio will lead the audience on a journey into the sound-world of the 13th century, evoking the earliest Christmas traditions.
